Book Description

Disillusioned by the new ideologies circulating in Europe after World War I, Franz Tunda is the archetypal modern man taken up by the currents of history.

In this novella, the hero drifts from place to place after returning to Europe from exile in Siberia, where he had been sent as a prisoner of war. I would describe this as minor Roth, in which the skilled journalist has not yet given way to the brilliant novelist. He describes some interesting encounters with his characteristic wit, but the book does not build momentum or lead anywhere in particular. The hero ends up describing himself, like a character from Lermontov, as a superfluous man.

For the Roth fans who will read this short book, I will cite one passage among several that struck me, about a "rich landed proprietor":

"Social sense is a luxury which the rich allow themselves and which has the further practical advantage of serving, to some extent, to maintain property. [Klara's] father loved to drink a little glass of wine with his head forester, to take a brandy with the forester, and to exchange a word with the assistant forester. Even social sense is able to make subtle distinctions. He would never allow any of his servants to pull on his boots, he used a bootjack out of common decency. His children had to wash in snow in the winter, travel the long road to school alone, climb up to their pitch-dark rooms at eight o'clock and make their own beds. Nowhere in the neighborhood were domestic servants better treated. Klara had to iron her vests with her own hands. In short, the old man was a man of principle and fibre, a virtuous landowner, a living defence against socialism, respected far and wide and elected to the Reichstag, where he demonstrated as a member of the conservative party that reaction and humanity are not irreconcilable opposites.

"He attended Klara's wedding, behaved well to the conductor [the groom], and died some weeks later without ever having allowed his expression to betray that he would have preferred a landowner: humanity to the grave."

No one but Roth could have written that passage, which creates a world in a few sentences and, indeed, demonstrates the writer's own deep sense of humanity.

Austrian Lt. Franz Tunda, the main character of Roth's "Flight Without End," escapes from a Russian prisoner-of-war camp and is plunged into the turbulence of post-World War I Europe. Struggling to find his way back to his former life in Vienna, Tunda becomes enmeshed in the chaos of a world that seems to have utterly lost its bearings.

Although it would be a stretch to characterize his decade-long effort to get home as a full-fledged Odyssey, the kaleidoscopic variety of his travels and exploits do lend the book some of the marvelously dramatic qualities of the epic genre. Tunda is a brutal footsoldier drafted to fight for the Bolshevik revolution; a mild-mannered Soviet functionary in faraway Baku; a free spirit smothered by the bourgeois conformity of Roth's unnamed but familiar "city on the Rhine"; a love-besotted flaneur on the boulevards of Paris.

Much of Roth's work grapples with the demise of the 19th century's certainties in the aftermath of World War One. In this "Flight without End," the possibilities of life are, both for better and for worse, greatly expanded.

Sex and plagues, magic and swordplay, conspiracies and prophecies, even royal fratricide--Tom Deitz knows the ingredients of good fantasy. But despite obvious skill and a dedicated cadre of fans, Deitz continues to be one of the genre's underappreciated, underrated authors. That may end with the first installment of his new Angen Chronicles, Bloodwinter.

This first book introduces us to rival nations Eron and Ixti. Eron's mountain-dwelling, Nordic society is tightly ordered and places great importance on craftsmanship and ritual. To the deserts of the south, the more chaotic and combative Ixti is grasshopper to Eron's ant, always coveting the resources of its neighbor. Bloodwinter concerns the fate of five young people, four from Eron, one from Ixti: the beautiful Strynn and the reserved Avall are newly married, but Strynn carries the child of Avall's villainous rival, Eddyn. These three master artisans work together through the winter on regalia for their king, but Avall stumbles upon a powerful gem that feeds on blood and allows its users to meld their minds. Meanwhile, Merryn, Avall's sister and Strynn's closest friend, serves out the winter in Eron's War-Hold, after shaming Eddyn in a ritual duel. She ends up in bed with the significant Ixtian in the story, self-exiled Prince Kraxxi, who has accidentally killed his father's favorite son. Bloodwinter is solid, if long in parts, but it ends abruptly. Hopefully the next installment will better address the most consistent complaint about Deitz, leveled by fans and critics alike: pacing. --Paul Hughes

            Book Description

An epic new fantasy of passion, power, and enchantment--

From a master of contemporary fantasy comes an unforgettable tale of heroes, heroines, and rogues whose two rival nations are scarred by suspicion, shadowed by war, and summoned to destiny by a magic that is both gift and curse.

In the icy northern realm of Eron, three young artisans bound by an unspeakable act of violence arrive at an isolated gem mine on a special commission for their king. They are the arrogant but talented Eddyn; Avall, his archrival; and beautiful Strynn, newly wed to Avall, but carrying Eddyn's child.

Meanwhile, to the south, amid Ixti's scorpion-riddled sands and sensuous cities, a horrible accident has forced Prince Kraxxi into exile with blood on his hands and a price on his head.

The four will be drawn together--and torn apart--by a magnificent find: a gem with magical properties beyond anyone's imagining or control. It is a struggle in which hidden forces pursue a frighteningly sinister agenda. For whoever possesses the gem holds the future of the world...and the power to destroy it.

2 out of 5 stars Good ideas, terrible storytelling.......2006-12-16

This review covers both BLOODWINTER and SPRINGWAR.

Tom Deitz has a pretty good idea for a story in these two books, the first half of a four volume fantasy cycle. The tale has a broad sweep and conceptually, I like how the harsh winters have created a strongly regimented society in Eron, one that unfortunately has been decimated by a plague. The discovery of a magical gem with mysterious powers sets Eron on a collision course with the rival kingdom of Ixti to the south. The crown prince of Ixti and his father the king have a falling out over accidental fratricide. A secret order of priests emerges with its own agenda for the gems.

There's good raw material here. It's a shame, really, that Deitz is a long-winded storyteller with no instinct for conflict or motivation.

In the first 100 pages of SPRINGWAR, for example, there are maybe 3 important story points. The rest of the pages dwell on repetitive scenes that rehash the same personal dilemmas from Bloodwinter. How many times do I need to be told the 5 things that Avall cares about, "in that order." And can we please stop using the phrase "for the nonce"?

The fact that characters continually make very big decisions based on flimsy rationale is a problem. What would drive someone to undertake a weeks-long trek in arctic weather that would freeze dry you like Han Solo if you stood naked in it for 10 minutes? Apparently Deitz thinks you'd do it if you calmly reason out that it's the course of action that makes the most sense, because a variety of bad things MIGHT happen if you don't. He's wrong. You undertake such a trek if you're boxed into a corner, desperate, and have exhausted all possible other options.

Of course, that would require more complicated narrative. Much easier to just have the characters do what you, the writer, decree they should do because that's the way you want the story to go. The gems themselves are introduced in a particularly lazy fashion. Avall, the protagonist, just happens on one in a mine. Despite its amazing uniqueness, when Deitz needs more gems in the hands of his heroes, they too just conveniently appear.

Another problem: everyone just looooves Avall. If they don't love him, then they must be the baddies of the story. Thus, instead of encountering challenges in his personal relationships, Avall finds himself easily believed and accepted among people of power. Interchangeably fresh-faced young people yearn to be near Avall so they can help him. Where are the differing personal agendas? And why, toward the end of Springwar, does Deitz just conveniently set aside the secret order of priests, when he could have used them to raise the stakes even higher?

Let's talk about the fluid sexuality and the free love. In Eron, husbands and wives routinely sleep with other men, or women, or both at the same time. Jealousy never seems to become a factor. There are, of course, people who are able to live that way. But it's simply not believable that jealousy, insecurity, and possessiveness don't cause any tension in this story. Instead of taking advantage of the potential for conflict this kind of behavior creates, Deitz prefers to write the world of human relationships as he would like it to be. Enlightened perhaps, but... yawn. Moreover Deitz misunderstands a fundamental point: the more regimented a society is, the more harshly regulated sex tends to be as well. "So what?" you might ask. "It's a fantasy." Sorry, you still have to have believable characters with recognizable emotional dilemmas. In fact, it's even more important, because the reader is already asked to suspend disbelief on so many other things.

I turned the pages willingly enough, but found myself getting frequently annoyed. Since reviews suggest that the 3rd and 4th books in the series (SUMMERBLOOD and WARAUTUMN) are even worse than these, this is as far as I go. It's a pretty good stopping point, too, since several story arcs do resolve themselves at the end of SPRINGWAR.

            4 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning.......2003-08-25

"Bloodwinter" is one of the rarest of finds: a fantasy novel by an intelligent adult who treats his readers like intelligent adults. This book barely contains any magic prior to the very end, and instead focuses on the travails of a large cast of major characters. The story takes place in two rival countries, Eron and Ixti, both of which have recently been devastated by plague. We follow sets of characters in both countries as their lives are slowly drawn into the conflict. Deitz's worldbuilding is outstanding, and we get very detailed pictures of what life is like for people who live in these places.

Deitz also avoids a lot of fantasy tropes, such as wise old wizards or armies of orcs. Instead, he gives us a big slate of human characters, and what human characters they are! As with almost all good modern fantasy, Deitz has eschewed the standard 'evil overlord vs. reluctant hero' storyline and instead devised a complex and realistic political situation. In Eron, there is no inherited monarchy. Instead, the King is elected, and members of twenty-four different clans vie for control during the process. Deitz takes a sophisticated approach to characterization. The heroes all have their flaws and struggle with conflicting loyalties, while the villains are treated with a degree of sympathy.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly on the mark.......2003-07-26

As a long time fan of Mr. Deitz, I anticipated this book to be more of a romp, and got a full-fledged novel instead. I think his writing has evolved and has matured - his characters are much more fully realized than in any of his other books. While some other readers have pointed out the amount of character detail and found it boring, I found that it layered on texture and depth to the overall story. Yes, it took me a while to grasp the clan structure and the familial relationships, but to me, that only lends it more credence as truly original fantasy. If it's so familiar that you know what the author is talking about by using simple shorthand (a technique used far too often in the world of fantasy writing), than it's not unique and stimulating.

Deitz has crafted a world and society that is dramatically different than typical fantasy worlds - magic doesn't exist, except within the realm of the Eight-Fold God. The political and religious repurcussions of the discovery that unfolds in the book are truly monumental and are worthy of the pages that Deitz spends writing about them.

There are a number of flaws, however. First off, his editor must not have been reading very carefully since he uses the phrase "for the nonce" about a dozen times. Since it's not a commonly used phrase, it sticks out like a sore thumb, and distracted me. Secondly, the pacing is really uneven. While I do care what happens to Kraxxi and Merryn, I was annoyed when we kept switching back and forth. I am still waiting to see how these characters meet back up with the main storyline, if they ever do.

The first quarter of the second book is really the ending of the first book. The first book ends abruptly, and I fortunately had the second at hand so I could continue on. Unlike his other collections, this one does not have a single story or adventure contained in a single volume. He seems to be taking lessions from Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series in that regard. Hopefully, unlike that collection, this will end in the number of books the author and publisher have promised.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Very intriguing indeed!!!!!.......2002-03-10

Tom Deitz has created a very intriguing new world in that of Eron and Ixti. The characters are very realistic and easy to sympathize with. Although this book may start off somewhat slow, it eventually becomes so engaging that I personally could not put it down! I look forward to reading more of this strange and utterly different land.

            4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2001-04-09

It took me almost seven weeks to finish this book. I liked it, but in some parts it is so boring that you just have to skip the chapter. Sometimes you can read forever and understand practically nothing about what is going on. Others, however, can be very exciting and well worth the read. I think there are too many characters, though. Sometimes you have no idea who is talking, and it can get rather confusing. I found no point in the prologue. The characters in that chapter never returned again and you don't know who else dies, or what happens to them. After that chapter it goes straight into the main story, with totally new characters. I thought it was a good plot though, and can not wait to get a hold of the second book.

Man! I can't believe the lack of reviews for one of the best, most prolific and long-lived SF authors ever. And it's a "BEST OF" collection!

Reading Simak at times is like floating down a lazy river or taking a liesurely stroll with an old friend. He's got a country bumpkin type of approach. I love it.

I like Simak's "Robot Stories" better than Asimov's because of his style. In fact, my favorite story in this collection was a robot story. ALL THE TRAPS OF EARTH examines what it would be like to be a robot with hundreds of years of memories and suddenly be faced with the threat of having all those memories taken away. Then to runaway from that situation and become an instantly recognizable fugitive, hitch a ride on the side of a spaceship and the effect warp-drive would have on a robot's uninsulated positronic brain. Oh, there's so much more to the story, but I can't tell you.

CRYING JAG is definately a "feel good" story, as almost all of them are.

This is good stuff and definately "a keeper" on my shelf.

Simak is a cerebral author whose characters spend a great deal of time analyzing puzzles and discovering solutions to problems set up for them. Unlike City, Simak's best known work, the stories in this collection are often optimistic in tone. This collection has several stories that have become my favorites: Crying Jag is a fun commentary on one of the things friends are supposed to be good for, and New Folks' Home is one of my favorite short stories of all time.

                  1 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2007-01-18

I am not a professional cook and was hoping for a more simple and cute idea book rather than the very professional book this is.

5 out of 5 stars Cooking for Company is the BEST.......2004-12-19

"I have two small sons, I work (more than) full time and so does my
husband. The simply delicious recipes and tons of tips in this bookhave allowed me to handle that --and give a few great parties, too. Author Aloni is an experienced caterer and you can tell in her chatty stories and party guidelines that she really knows what she's doing. I have her other book and it is great, too.

                  5 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL!!!.......2004-01-18

After hearing the charming Nicole Aloni on NPR I immediately purchased this cookbook book. (I even was late to an appointment because I didn't want to leave the car until the interview was finished). I became especially intrigued with her 5 criteria for including any recipe in her book (such as "delicious and easy yet look like they took all day", and "traditional enough to appeal to your grandmother's palate, yet sophisticated enough to impress your new fashion designer daughter-in-law").

After trying several recipes, I can say without a doubt that this is my most treasured new cookbook, and I have already given several copies as gifts.

My absolute favorite so far is her recipe for Carole's Perfect Brownies. I was skeptical because over the decades I have tried many MANY brownie recipes. This one is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST EVER - using 3 kinds of chocolate. I have FINALLY found the ultimate chocolate dessert!

I actually shouldn't say I have a favorite recipe in the book come to think of it, because the Lemon Tart and the Risotto Dolce Scented with Cardamom and Orange are
sensational. The very easy Chocolate-Orange Cake was absolutely delicious - and very unusual.

The New Wave Spinach and Pomegranate Salad sounds great as do all of the unique salad combinations that Nicole lists as one of her many "extras".

I can't wait to try the mole poblano-Style chili with Beans and the Arugula Pesto Roast Lamb.

ORDER THIS BOOK NOW and then go to Nicole's website to check out her classes around the country. I can't wait until she comes to Los Angeles! THANK YOU NICOLE!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the holiday party season now!.......2003-10-15

This book is so much more than a collection of wonderful new recipes (Hot Scampi Dip, Coconut Crab Dip, Pork Tenderloin w/ Fig Sauce, just to name a few)...the author offers wine recommendations for almost every item, as well as explicit instructions on how far in advance an item can be prepped. Can entertaining get any easier than this?? The roasting charts cover virtually every cut of meat and every vegetable imaginable, making the book a veritable gold mine of information. And the section at the end entitled "Year Round Entertaining Menus", well, all I can say is that Nicole seems to have written this section for all of the cooking enthusiasts who never feel entirely confident that their party menu reflects an adequate balance of tastes, textures, and flavors. With this book in hand, I'm ready to entertain year-round!

                  5 out of 5 stars An entertainer's must have!!!.......2003-10-09

This has been the best addition to my cookbooks... I have spiced up some of my basics and learned tips that have been flawless. I have fewer entertaining "jitters!"

                  Thank you Nicole!

A lot of information that hepls new bengal owners, I would also recomend Guide to Owning a Bengal Cat by Jean S. Mill.

4 out of 5 stars Average Bengal Book.......2006-01-17

The book has some good pictures and some good information, but some is contradictory. For example, if you buy premium cat food your paying for advertising, etc., but the next sentence reads that when buying cat food, you get what you pay for. Confusing. Otherwise the book tells the positives of owning a Bengal, not the drawbacks.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Bengal Info........2006-01-02

I found this book to be full of basic cat information and less Bengal specific information than I would have liked. It did help to describe the breed standards on a basic level. If you are looking for a quality Bengal and want all the details, more research is absolutely necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Bengals.......2005-08-03

This is a very informative book on the Bengal cat breed. Many wonderful photos too. Very helpful to a new Bengal owner -- highly recommended.

                  3 out of 5 stars Bengal .......2004-09-21

I enjoyed the book but was a little disappointed as I expected it to be much more detailed. I thought it was more of a beginners book to cats. A great book if you have never had a cat or done any research on bengal cats.

After reading this book and many, many more in my research of the breed for purchase I searched the internet for responsible and reputable "Bengal Breeders" and even though I found a few and corresponded with several over email and phone I also ended up contacting Jean Mill too. I couldn't be happier and now have my absolutely gorgeous Bengal Kitten I named "Nala" that Jean shipped to me. Not only is she a perfect example in description, with an awesome coat and beautiful , stunning features she has a personality to match. She is the most intelligent, loving, playful inquisitive, kitten I have ever seen and loves me and and my pups and friends that visit.

You need to buy this book regardless if you already own a Bengal, or are planning on purchasing one. The author Jean Mill of Millwood Bengals studied genetics at the University level and was the founder of the Bengal breed.

The negative reviews that are on Amazon about this book are obviously from uneducated and or envious people. Jean Mill created and developed the Bengal breed to give today's modern society an absolutely unique domestic cat that retains the appearance and luxuriously soft feel of a leopard's coat. This text will take you on an interesting journey through pictures and prose on how Jean Mill evolved the Asian jungles Leopard cat into a Bengal cat.

Moreover, the joy that you will receive from basking your eyes with the beauty along with the sensual softness, and interacting with the gentle personality and extreme intelligence of a Millwood Bengal absolutely has no peers...

5 out of 5 stars An informative book from an actual Bengal breeder!.......2002-06-07

This book wowed me!I had read some negative reviews about it before but decided to order it anyways.I don't know what those people were talking about because this book IS amazing!First off it has high quality color photographs on every page!Second off,the author is and has been a Bengal owner and breeder for years and really knows first hand what she is talking about. She tells you the basics along with what she has learned.
VERY imformative on the Bengal breed! My book of choice.

3 out of 5 stars Recommended buy before you purchase your Bengal........2001-03-17

The book is worth purchasing for the stunning photography itself. There are some tips and helpful information, but I've found more detailed information from breeders websites. Books on Bengals are not available as yet in Australia, so not sure how this compares to others, but I doubt breeders nor people wishing to show their cat would learn more than what they already know from this book. Recommended to the pet buyer who wants some basic info on habits, care, growth stages and beautiful photos of a range of Bengal coat patterns.

2 out of 5 stars Expected better from the woman who created the breed.......2000-01-14

I expected a better book from the woman who created and promoted this wonderful breed! It is a very basic book more appropriate for someone considering a Bengal as a pet rather than for someone who already owns one. Very superficial coverage of the topics covered in this book. Most of the pictures in this book were provided from the same people over and over so there was not a lot of variety. 2 different photos actually show cats with a leash AROUND the neck of the cat which is very dangerous. Further, many of the cats pictured in the book were not very close to the breed standard and could therefore be misleading if a potential buyer where to use these pictures as a guideline for buying. Many of the photos don't do this breed justice. One cat, for example, was featured both on the cover and on the title page, and had the dirtiest ears! This is no testament to proper cat care and who was the editor anyway! The only thing that I did really like about this book was the "foto-glaze" that coated all the pictures making them look realistic and rich. Overall, I'm sorry to say, I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy the play of mesmerizing colours!.......2001-12-22

A beautifully illustrated book with mesmerizing colours: an abundance of deep indigo, jungle greens, various shades of burnt orange, and of course the requisite fuschia. I very much enjoyed the play of colours in this book. With the cut paper collages and paintings, the fabrics flow eith textures, layers and decorous patterns.

The story focuses on Sardul, a clever cat who schemes to have his master Jamil marry a princess. Reminiscent of Puss in Boots, when Jamil sighs and wishes he could marry the princess in the palace, Sardul responds "Give me the best waistcoat and the most beautiful sari we have made, Master, and I will make your dream come true."

My four year old delighted in reading the book. I gave her some cut fabric and she pretended dressing up in a sari. I highly recommend this marvelously illustrated book.

History buffs shaould also note that Jamil's Clever Cat is shrewdly retold from "The Folk Tales of Bengal" originally published by the Rev. Lal Behari Day of Hooghly College,Bengal, in 1883.

Known as the "female Michael Jordan," Chamique tells the full story of her life on and off the court -- shedding light on what makes her an all-around superstar

She has been called the best woman basketball player ever, but the popularity of twenty-four-year-old Chamique Holdsclaw is rooted not only in her skill, but also in her remarkable life. In this autobiography, Chamique shares her amazing journey from a tough neighborhood and a difficult relationship with her parents to the blacktops of New York City, where she dominated the all-male competition, to her triumphs as the star of the Washington Mystics.

Chamique takes readers inside her incredible record-setting championship seasons at the University of Tennessee, describes her elation when she became the first pick in the 1999 WNBA draft, and brings home her exhausting and exhilarating first year playing professionally and living on her own. As she reveals how she evolved from a deceptively fragile girl into a self-assured athlete, Chamique shares both a stunning life story and her hard-earned wisdom, which will inspire others to pursue their dreams.

I don't know how to express how Chamique's book has given me confindence. Knowing Chamique is succeeding over come obstacles in her here life has given me inspiration. The book has taught me to work hard in school and on the basketball court. If you work hard you will success in great things. It could be changing the world or graduating from High School.

3 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS THOUGHT.......2000-11-10

Chamiquqe did a good job writing about her life, but it wasn't as good applying it to her life. It was about her family, basketball, but wasn't very much on focus. It was an okay book.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read For Anyone Battling Extreme Obstacles.......2000-10-31

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only from the basketball perspective, but even more from the human aspect. Chamique is a great example for children coming from broken homes and dysfunctional situations. I think it's a must read for anyone battling extreme obstacles.

5 out of 5 stars The Mique Shall Inherit the Earth.......2000-10-07

Chamique reveals the obstacles she has overcome to be the superstar she is. Instead of dwelling on her troubled family life, she excelled in basketball. She's gracious: she credits her grandmother, uncle, coaches, teammates, and God for her success; she tells how she reconciled with her parents. Unlike certain NBA players, Chamique isn't likely to miss practices, make a violent rap album, or become a prima donna. She is acutely aware of her status as a role model and that her talent is a gift. This is a book that all kids should read.

5 out of 5 stars Chamique on Family, Focus, and Basketball.......2000-10-06

Being the Lady Vol fan that I am, I couldn't wait to get this book. (I have read both of Pat Summit's). This book gives you a very up-close and personal look at Chamique, and all of those involved in her life. She lets you into her thoughts and feelings. Great personal feelings of the UT Lady Vols basketball program in general. I sat down to read a few pages and finished the book the very next day. Chamique has touched a part of me that I didn't think she could. I really recommend this to all her fans, young and old, and fans of women's basketball in general.
