Book Description

The delightful second installment in Alexander McCall Smith’s already hugely popular new detective series, The Sunday Philosophy Club, starring the irrepressibly curious Isabel Dalhousie — editor of the Journal of Applied Ethics — and her no-nonsense housekeeper, Grace.

When Isabel’s niece, Cat, asks Isabel to run her delicatessen while she attends a wedding in Italy, Isabel meets a man with a most interesting problem. He recently had a heart transplant, and is suddenly plagued with memories of events that never happened to him. The situation appeals to Isabel as a philosophical question. Is the heart truly the seat of the soul? And it piques her insatiable curiosity: could the memories be connected with the donor’s demise? Grace, of course, thinks it is none of Isabel’s business. Add to the mix the lothario Cat brings home from the wedding in Italy, who, in accordance with all that Isabel knows about lotharios, shouldn’t be trusted . . . but goodness, he is charming.

That makes two mysteries of the heart to be solved — just the thing for Isabel Dalhousie.

5 out of 5 stars The Isabel Dalhousie series.......2007-10-06

The series of Isabel Dalhousie books is a most enjoyable read. As I am a nosy female, she is most easy to identify with, and her actions are most understandable to me.

The author is a favorite of mine. Always a good read.

1 out of 5 stars attractive title but boring story (if any).......2007-06-18

I was attracted by the storyline: after a heart transplant, a man had some "new" memories, and suspected that the transplanted heart carried with it the memories of the donor. Attractive story, isn't it? But I'm sad to find out the story unfolded was quite boring *_*

3 out of 5 stars Something almost happens.......2007-05-11

I have to admit that, although I enjoyed reading this book, I was disappointed when I reached the end and realized that nothing much had really happened. There was the prospect of a juicy hit and run murder, perhaps the question of questionable transplant ethics, perhaps something supernatural and outside the realm of rationality - but, no - nothing really comes of any of it. It reminds me of Virginia Woolfs 'To the Lighthouse' with much internal rumination and complex social mores and not much actual action. I would prefer if there were even a small crime or mystery, such as those solved by the Botswana detective lady in the midst of her gentle African ruminations. This was more just leaping about to wrong conclusions, and Ms. Dalhousie is much too intelligent for that.

4 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Moral Obligation.......2007-05-10

I really enjoyed this second installment in the Isabel Dalhousie Mystery series. The book is frought with moral dilemmas and observations regarding human behaviour related to organ transplants and the concept of "cellular memory," May-December romance, and unrequited love.

Does a recipient of an organ donation have the ablity to remember the last moments of the donors life? Also, should the family of the organ donor be made aware of this, or even know who received the organ? What if the donor died under suspicious circumstances? Or perhaps we are all jumping to conclusions?

This is a great read that makes the reader question the morality of each situation, turning the reader into an armchair philosopher!

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ!.......2006-11-10

AS BOOKS IN A SERIES GO, 'FRIENDS. LOVERS. AND CHOCOLATES' WAS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS 'THE SUNDAY PHILOSOPHY CLUB.' PERHAPS THEY WERE NOT QUITE AS MUCH FUN AS THE 'NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE' SERIES BUT MORE INTERESTING THAN 'PORTUGUESE IRREGULAR VERBS' TRIOLOGY ALL BY ALEXANDER MC CALL SMITH.
THE CHARACTERIZATIONS WERE VERY GOOD, THE NIECE, THE HOUSEKEEPER, JEREMY, AND ISABEL ALL LEAPED OFF THE PAGE AS LIVING, VERY REAL AND INTERESTING.
IT WAS A QUICK READ, I KEPT TURNING PAGES WANTING TO REACH THE CONCLUSION, BUT VERY MUCH ENJOYING THE STORY ALONG THE WAY. I ALSO ENJOYED THE PEPPERING OF W.H. AUDEN QUOTES THROUGHOUT!

                Book Description

Michael Martinez begins a comprehesive study of Tolkien's imaginery history by "Browsing the Compleat Middle-Earth Library". His trademark conversational tone and style introduce Tolkien's readers to new persepctives on Elves, Hobbits, Numenorians, and other fantastic inhabitants of Middle-Earth.

Advising that "...if you really want to see where it all came from...you first need to see what it all is", Martinez explores Tolkien's pseudo-history in detail, analyzing the motivations and values of Middle-Earth's civilizations as described by Tolkien himself. Extensive research on Tolkien's Second Age, a mysterious era spanning thousands of years, illuminates the second "fall" of Tolkien's Elves, who made the dreadful Rings of Power, withheld vital knowledge from their allies, and exposed all of Middle-Earth to Sauron's evil.

Finally, Martinez provides a wealth of insightful commentary, quoting Tolkien's letters and his son Christopher's extensive documentation, on those of Tolkien's sources which are often missed by other researchers.

You will never look at Middle-Earth the same way again after reading Understanding Middle-Earth.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent essays and opinions on Middle-Earth.......2006-11-27

This book is definitely worth the read. A number of thoughtful, intelligent and insightful pieces of writing help illuminate Tolkien's work a bit further and share the author's viewpoints and inspirations as they relate as well. Serious fans of Tolkiens work will like this book and those just beginning and or curious will like it as well.

3 out of 5 stars What is the drama about?.......2005-09-05

I read this book based on the apparent "love it or hate it" theme that crops up in the other reviews. What I found, as a long time Tolkien reader, was a competant work that emphasised some lesser known influences on Tolkien. It is an engaging enough read to be recommended for that reason alone. Middle-Earth is such a vast subject, that for the serious, I think this is a worthwhile addition to your bookshelves, but it is just one of many works that we will collect!

5 out of 5 stars Go On An Adventure.......2005-03-05

Do you believe in hobbits? Do they really exist? Are you sure? Understanding Middle Earth is a book to stir your imagination and make you wonder if these essays on Tolkien's Middle-Earth are really a pseduo-history or a real-life account of elves and their complex societal structure. Imaginary? Probably. Possible? Maybe. Take and adventure and explore possiblities that you might not ever imagine if you do not read this book.

                5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-08-25

An incredible book! Michael Martinez takes you on a journey through Middle-earth like nothing you have ever seen before. I thought the movies were great but this book blows them out of the water. All the stuff about the Elves is simply amazing. I never knew Tolkien had written so much about Middle-earth.

Martinez mixes humor with serious study and he doesn't take himself too seriously. He covers so many topics you just can't believe there is more to Middle-earth that he doesn't go into. I can't wait for the third book! When does it come out?

5 out of 5 stars A great book for any Tolkien reader.......2004-06-20

How can anyone believe a review written by a self-proclaimed Michael Martinez hater? Why does Amazon allow people to post hateful reviews that are so clearly intended to hurt sales?

I have read this book and I enjoyed it. Michael Martinez knows the material inside out and I have no doubt he does a better job of checking his facts than people who are so hateful they have to accuse him of being a liar.

You should judge for yourself whether the book is worth the price you pay. Middle-earth is a wonderful fantasy and it comes to life under the hand of Michael Martinez. He is extremely faithful to professor Tolkien's word.

Everything you think you know is wrong... That was the strange message left on Cory Maddox's E-mail - just at the moment when years of work on a revolutionary subspace computer system was about to pay off. Nothing would be the same for Cory again. Suddenly his life was thrown into chaos when the company that controlled his patent was sold out from under him, and instead of imminent wealth, Cory was facing immediate poverty. Then along came Alan Stark, who wanted to recruit Cory for a special research project on virtual reality.

                Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not much like "The Matrix" at all.......2004-05-13

I tracked down a copy of this book after reading the comments suggesting that "The Matrix" appropriated some of Chalker's ideas.

Although "The Matrix" does begin in a way that is superficially similar to Chalker's novel -- a mysterious woman prods a computer programmer to realize his world is a virtual-reality illusion -- it quickly diverges into a wildly different story.

I'd be more sympathetic if Chalker wasn't such a mediocre writer. His prose is cliche-ridden and meandering, and his narrative is completely devoid of any tension or momentum; he takes 50 tedious pages just to get the story rolling. Characterization ranges from minimal to nonexistent. It's hard to believe that the Wachowskis would even bother to slog through this.

In his self-indulgent introduction, Chalker says this is an homage to Philip K. Dick. Too bad he didn't emulate Dick's crisp, clear prose style.

5 out of 5 stars I Guarantee You Will Love This Book.......2004-04-18

If you are naturally curious, like interesting plot twists and rich environments, then you are going to love this book.

I tend to agree with other reviewers that this work is the inspiration for the movie "The Matrix" and in many ways is a superior work. The ideas in Chalker's work are much more developed than in The Matrix and does a much better job of keeping it's integrity throughout.

5 out of 5 stars First get a good grip on Reality.......2002-09-11

Jack L. Chalker's theory of existence was spelled out in Book I, P. 223: "... Sometime, somebody, in a world we otherwise know nothing about but which has to be far more advanced than the one we now knew, built a vast computer for some reason and put tremendous knowledge and capability into it. Something went wrong, or so it seemed. A group, a small group, of people from that original place, that true universe, had come into the system and gotten lost, then trapped, in an ever-increasing series of exquisitely detailed virtual universes.. [Brand] was the only hope of getting everybody together again and back to reality. ..."
Chalker wrote, "All reality is programming. We cannot know the real: we are trapped in an endless series of simulations, all of us, and some, like myself, in simulations within simulations. ...." He uses an IT, a thing, a faceless one or a gray ancient to speak these lines, rather than a flesh and blood character. This device implied a para-programmer, one outside the mind of man. This invented God is in control not only of the author outside the story's pages but in control of all the characters within the pages of the book.
Reality now has a counterpart, virtual reality. The characters, en mass, stare into the mirror of their own minds and realize that they had no measuring rod with which to gauge their own realities. The mind is self reflective. The mind has no outer objective way to measure either its input or output. The characters reveal the dead end of human thought. The fact that the tactile nerves register solidity reveals little regarding production or projection of such solidity. There is no way to distinguish whether the neurons fire due to sensory input rather than from say drugs or computer generated inputs. Reality, thus loses its previous foundation.
Chalker posits an Existence Computer with limitless memory able to fill in a separate reality for each and every mind. Everyone gets their own set of individual mental constructs. With this god-like computer unlimited universes to surround each person's set of ideas could be created. (P. 211 BK II). Taking this idea one step further, each person is a circuit on the mother board of the universe. Every solid item that surrounds a person is created within another little circuit. The whole universe is the giant circuitry, the mother board of existence. We are all but chips, powered from this hidden source of energy that we call existence. Chalker names his god character Matthew Brand. Brand understands the circuitry and power of the Existence Computer enough to become part of it. Brand was able to join with the energy reactor in order to control the energy flow into the mother board of the Existence Computer.

                4 out of 5 stars Good 13th Floory Fun.......2001-05-12

I know! Thirteenth Floor wasn't based on this novel (or the series, either), but that movie kept coming to mind as I read the first part of Cybernetic Walrus. Chalker is original and creative in this book, though, and it's much more satisfying than the "What Is Real?" movies out there. A thoroughly enjoyable book, stands as an adventure in its own right, but also beckons the reader on to the rest of the trilogy.

The protagonist, Cory Maddox undergoes plenty of transformation in this story, running through several life "phases" while trying to sort out who to trust. One of the enjoyable features of this series is that the reader is never quite certain who he should trust, either. Often, I found myself wanting to urge Cory & Riki to trust the wrong (in hindsight) characters.

Plenty here for either the SF or fantasy fan. Thoroughly enjoyable--Chalker knows how to entertain while stretching the mind and imagination. Perhaps the worst feature of this book is that the 3rd book of the trilogy is so difficult to obtain.

A solid four-star rating: great fun, but not absolute genius.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cyberspace series yet!.......1999-12-20

Jack Chalker continues his tradition of unique ideas and perspectives in the Wonderland series. What starts out as a classic cyberspace story quickly turns in unexpected directions. This book will definitely get you thinking about the true nature of reality. If you liked the movie, "The Matrix," get this book! The movie stole Chalker's ideas without giving credit, and the book explores the ideas to a greater depth. Too bad Del Rey is so short-sighted and has not reprinted the 3rd book in this series.

The delectable treats turned out by Richard Leach--executive pastry chef of the Park Avenue Café and a James Beard Foundation Pastry Chef of the Year--are inspired, distinctive, and daring. In Sweet Seasons, he aims to bring his masterful recipes to home kitchens everywhere.

Known for his striking presentations, Leach states in the book's introduction that he would never be able to make his phenomenal desserts without the help of his staff, yet here he claims to make it possible for home cooks to re-create these masterpieces in their own kitchens. Truth be told, one would be hard pressed to find many home cooks who have the time, the patience, or the chutzpah to attempt dishes like Leach's Citrus Panna Cotta with Warm Poppyseed Cake and Citrus Sorbet. The dish, in its entirety, includes: Poppyseed Cake, Lemon Curd, Citrus Panna Cotta, Sour Lemon Meringues, Citrus Sorbet, Honey Tuiles, Orange Sections, Grapefruit Sections, Citrus Sauce, Cotton Candy, and Sugar Garnish, all of which are prepared from scratch. The good news is that many of the desserts are quite lovely--not to mention impressive--with most of the garnishes left off. For instance, in the above example, the Citrus Panna Cotta--delicately flavored with chamomile tea and lemongrass--is lovely served with a simple garnish of fresh fruit and a drizzle of the warm citrus sauce. If you're in the mood for extra flourish, you could add either the Honey Tuiles or the Sour Lemon Meringues for a little crunch.

A chapter on "Basic Recipes" offers sauces and syrups, cookies, and other garnishes that are delicious enough to turn any cake, pastry, or scoop of ice cream into a dessert worthy of serving to even the most honored guests. Mix and match these with Leach's sophisticated cakes, tarts, ice creams, and fritters, and you'll be sure to impress your guests. Boyd Hagen's lovely photographs are both inspiring and appetizing. If they move you to attempt Leach's presentations in full, more power to you. --Robin Donovan

                      Book Description

"Richard Leach has inspired an entire generation of pastry chefs. He's widely imitated . . . he has single-handedly changed the way desserts look around the country in a lot of restaurants." --Alfred Portale, Gotham Bar & Grill
"The first time I encountered Richard Leach's desserts, I became absolutely incoherent. My notes from that meal are garbled and filled with exclamation points."--Ruth Reichl, New York Times
"Richard Leach, the pastry chef, should have his hands licensed as deadly weapons, like boxers." --Bryan Miller, New York Times
Food critics, nationwide, have exalted him. Food Arts magazine dubbed him the "Pythagoras of pastry," in recognition of his revolutionary genius as a pastry chef. Master pastry chefs, everywhere, have tried to imitate him and failed. Now, at last, in this beautifully illustrated guide, Richard Leach reveals the secrets behind his fabulous talent to inspire home bakers as he has professional pastry chefs.
In Sweet Seasons, Chef Richard Leach shares 400 of his building block recipes that can be combined to create 100 of his favorite, original desserts, organized by the seasons--so bakers can take advantage of the freshest available ingredients--and richly supplemented with 113 color photographs illustrating the plated desserts and their assembly. Each recipe is structured so as to allow readers to prepare all or any part of the dessert, based on level of expertise and availability of ingredients. For example, a summer dessert of Warm Peach Strudel with Sweet Corn Panna Cotta breaks down the recipe into its components (e.g., roasted peaches, vanilla crepes, corn panna cotta, peach sauce, honey tuille garnish, etc.) to allow the reader to "mix and match." Throughout, Chef Leach provides useful substitution tips and plating directions, and includes a complete Resource List, which provides sources for ingredients and equipment.
Richard Leach (New York, NY) is Executive Pastry Chef at Park Avenue Cafe. He was named 1997 Pastry Chef of the Year by the James Beard Foundation and one of the Top Ten Pastry Chefs in America by Pastry Art and Design.

I recommended this book for those who love desserts.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have for the SERIOUS Chef!.......2005-04-15

BEAUTIFUL presentations of Amazing desserts! I am a pastry chef for a resturant and I use this book ALL the time to start the new ideas flowing. This book may be useless for the home baker, I usually simplify Leach's ideas when making one of the desserts because of time restraints. All desserts have MULTIPLE aspects/items and steps.... I wish I could find more books like this one!!! (I heard about the book from a CIA chef, best advice he ever gave me....)

4 out of 5 stars Not for the timid.......2004-06-06

This book is a joke if you are interested in baking --even sophisticated bakers and pastry/cake decorators such as myself would be hard-pressed to find the ingredients (pistachio paste?) or the time to attempt any of these. Also it should be noted that while the concentration of this book is on presentation, NOT ALL OF THE RECIPES INCLUDE PHOTOS. So much for re-creating the recipe in your home kitchen. It is very entertaining, however, if you want to sit and page through it, at the library, as each page is more spectacular -- and astounding -- than the prior.

5 out of 5 stars Degrees of Delectable Dessert Difficulty.......2002-12-18

These made according to Leach's specifications are of the utmost in time, skill and technique. However, as with most sophisticated chefs, the author here encourages us to only take what we want to bite off. Serve only a portion, use a presentation method with a totally different dessert, etc., etc.

These function around carefully worked out organization, with numerous steps and components to architecturally outstanding multi-layered spectaculars! The collection is based seasonally around the very best of that time's ingredients.

Such artistic mastery as" Walnut Tartlet with Chilled Spiced Cream and Golden Raisins; Pear And Pistachio Torte with Pear Fritters and Roasted Pear Puree; Glazed Ricotta Cheese Tart with Fresh Cherries; Chocolate-Espresso Cube with Chocolate Sorbet; Caramelized Banana-Mango Disks with Tamarind Sauce.

Comparable to Charlie Trotters in complexity, however, not the demands on ingredients, as most of these are readily available to the interested home gourmet. Presentation is somewhat formidable, but instructive and gets one thinking about what elements to incorporate in one's own creations.

Not for the weak of pastry accumen.

5 out of 5 stars One of the *BEST* Dessert books I have ever seen!!!.......2002-11-29

A truly awesome book, with beautiful photography, inspiring recipes and easy to understand and reproduce recipes. However, I will say this clearly, this book was not intended for the 'Sunday Afternoon Easy-Bake-Oven Gourmet.' Many of the recipes in this book are the kind you'd expect to spend twenty dollars or more for at a fine-dining restaurant! I believe the author intended this book for the enormous army of professional chefs and pastry chefs that are out there these days, and not solely for the home cook.

However, do not let this disuade you from trying this book! Many of the recipes in here oculd be simplified by removing a few non-essential components to a dish, while some of them could be made partially in advance and then completed at the last moment before serving!

                      Bon Appetit!

                      Book Description

Perhaps you thought training a cat was an impossible task. Maybe you think your cat's too independent, too stubborn or too wild. Not so! In 50 Ways to Train Your Cat, author Sally Franklin's easy training methods keep feline instincts in mind. You can achieve wonderful results by working with your cat's nature rather than against it. At the same time you'll create a deeper bond with your cat through increased interaction and positive reinforcement. Among other things, your cat will learn to leave the curtains alone, climb up—and down!—a tree and get along with dogs. More precocious cats can try tricks like swimming and retrieving. Sally Franklin's methods proceed at a cat's own pace, and bring even the most difficult skills within your cat's reach. By spending just a few minutes each day, you'll make life with your cat easier, happier and more fulfilling.

Caution: One trick in this book is physically dangerous to your cat. Our vet said it is dangerous for a cat to stand-up on their back legs. Their hind legs can not support this activity. You will injure your cat. Please stop this trick. There are many, many other tricks cats can learn & not hurt themselves over time. PS Dog's hind legs can support standing-up - just not cats legs.

1 out of 5 stars Warning: Inaccurate Description - Not Postive Reinforcement Oriented.......2006-08-03

This book relies heavily on squirting cats with water, which is not a positive reinforcement. Also, the steps do not address problem cats that don't want to cooperate. For instance, the section on nail-clipping tells you how to clip a cat's nails, but does not address how to get a cat to accept nail clipping without fussing.

                      3 out of 5 stars one way, 50 times.......2006-07-10

I found it lacking in detail, basically describing one way (positive reinforcement) used in 50 different applications. Much of the advice simply isn't practical.

                      2 out of 5 stars Cats aren't Computers.......2005-04-19

This book seemed like most Computer books I read. Define the problem and then a procedural step by step list of how to "solve" the problem. It just seems cold, calulating and impersonal. This may work with computers, but not with something living. The book just lists the steps, and if your cat doesn't follow the steps listed, oh well.

The author also seems to be streaching to reach the 50 training tips mentioned in the title as most seemed to come natural to my cats or were common sense to me.

This wonderful celebration of animals of land, sea and air gives cross stitchers the chance to create some of the most realistic images of animals ever seen. Using her highly-regarded watercolor paintings as inspiration, Jayne has produced exciting animal designs from five diverse habitats.

Each section begins with a stunning showpiece--an animal portrait surrounded by wildlife from the habitat--to be stitched together or as individual motifs. The featured animal portraits are ideal for framing, but they can also be displayed in many other ways, from accenting a shirt to enhancing a towel.

With Jayne's evocative watercolors to provide extra inspiration, this collection will please all cross stitchers seeking fresh, realistic animal designs.

                          Book Description

Light is a very important factor in the construction of buildings and their interiors. In an era dominated by technical innovation, ecological demands and aesthetical requirements, architects and investors are recognising that artificial light and daylight can be used to great effect inside and outside with comparative ease. Good lighting is influenced by a number of complex factors: design, experience, technical competence, imagination, and the cooperation of experts and clients. Drawing upon their extensive experience from working with internationally renowned architects on more than 250 projects, the authors have produced a comprehensive handbook on lighting that takes into consideration all these factors. From the very first designs to the completion of the projects, it charts all aspects of lighting projects using copious international examples. Chapters on basic technical details and the necessary instruments are included, and an extensive glossary makes vital information readily accessible.

I purchased the book as a present and was disappointed that the upper right corner of the book was deeply wrinkled and smooshed --- the book was either not wrapped properly or was packaged and sent in bad condition.

5 out of 5 stars For All Francophiles and Literature Lovers.......2000-08-06

I am a nut about French Literature and History and this volume is one of my prized posessions. Most of the important manuscripts and relics of French Culture, from the 8th century on, are on display in this one volume. They are all accompanied by insightful and erudite descriptions on the part of the American and French contributors. It is like being led on a grand tour through one of the most important cultural repositories of the world (La Biblioteque nationale). I have been re-reading Froissart's Chronicles recently and they are magnificently represented as item #39. The volume also includes splendid maps of French territories from the Carolingian era to the Napoleonic Empire. These have been particularly helpful to me in my recent re-reading of Froissart and Joinville & Villehardouin's Chronicles of the Crusades. This volume is not inexpensive, but it is well worth the $ for any bibliophile or literature lover. It is the sort of book one can spend many enjoyable hours with and can study at leisure, giving one countless returns on his/her original investment. The illustrations are uniformily magnificent and the print quality is excellent. It is the type of book that should remain as a vivid reminder of what culture truly means for past, present and future generations. My highest recommendation and my highest commendation for all involved in this magnificent enterprise.

A must-read if you love French culture and history. For the first time the Bibliotheque Nationale de France displays cleverly her own treasures, with wonderfully written articles- especially regarding the illuminated manuscripts. This is the kind of a book you want on your shelves!
