3 out of 5 stars Ok mystery, but relationship with Mike and Norman is getting tedious.......2007-05-26

The mystery in this book starts with the murder of Sheriff Grant and Hannah's pursuit to clear Brother in law, Bill. The mystery was ok.

But, Hannah is a successful 30-ish woman and is being entirely too indecisive with Mike and Norman. She's been 'dating' both men for over a year, thru the first several books of the series, and never gone beyond kissing them. Also, both men are perfectly happy to sit back and 'share' dates with Hannah. Beyond prudish. There is a line between overly-prudish and erotic fiction, and Fluke isn't even beginning to toe at it.

I agree with the review that mentioned that Hannah should actually have a real relationship with either Mike or Norman before hoping that one of them will propose. Not realistic at all.

On the positive side, you will be drooling over the descriptions of the food. The subplots of Moishe and his senior crunchies, as well as the secret ingredient in the fudge cupcakes, were both more intriguing to me than the mystery and the dulling relationship twist.

3 out of 5 stars Hannah should appreciate her SUV despite the faulty heater.......2007-04-08

Hannah parks her cookie truck a few blocks away from a suspect's house, meets Norman to burglarize the home, then rides in his vehicle to visit other sources of information. When Norman finally chauffeurs Hannah to the cookie shop, he parks very carefully next to Hannah's cookie truck. Apparently her vehicle is able to travel intelligently all by itself, or has a secret homing device. Neither Norman or Hannah appear surprised to find her SUV sitting in its regular parking space. One wonders how Hannah is able to put together any clues to solve a murder, if she is not able to remember that she left her vehicle elsewhere.

If you are able to suspend belief and just view the book as an enjoyable piece of fluff, rather than a serious commentary on human nature or a procedural guidebook for solving mysteries, then, by all means, buy this book.

Loved this book! Reading about Hannah's adventure's with "murder" and her love life is so much fun!

5 out of 5 stars Chocolate is Very Very Good for Me.......2006-06-04

One recurring theme in Joanne Fluke's books is the benefits of chocolate. This book has a lot to offer. Hannah's brother becomes a murder suspect. Because of that, he is suspended from his job and has to stay home. Well we all know how well that works! Luckily, Andrea has the patience of Job. I liked this book very much. Hannah never ceases to amaze me on her vocabulary and grammar knowledge. She has a quick mind and figures things out that others cannot. Hannah has inspired me to bake more than I have in years! Read it! You will love it!

1 out of 5 stars Who wrote this?.......2007-05-10

What were the owners of the Casca series thinking when they hired this no-brainer? This guy can't write, let alone carry on a series brilliantly done by a guy who knew how to grab a reader's attention and keep it. This is an action series, so why does this guy write about eating and getting fat? I also read in Sadler's books Casca can't survive underwater, but this guy says he can. So who do we believe, Sadler or this guy who knows nothing? Get rid of him stat.

2 out of 5 stars Nice try but no continuity. Disappointing........2007-01-12

I really enjoyed the Casca series and was excited when I first heard someone was trying to continue it. As I read the book, I became dissapointed especially with the first part of the book where Casca is trapped under a sunken boat at the bottom of the ocean. In other books with similar situations, Casca would have gone into a catatonic state of sorts. For example, I believe it was Casca: The Warlord where he was buiried alive and went into a sort of deep sleep. Another book where he got trapped in an underground river and was only 'awake' when his body surfaced in areas with 'air' pockets. So, while the parts about him waiting for a fish to swim close enough for him to catch and eat were mildly interesting, it really has no continuity with other events in the overall story line. That added to the slowing of pace in the middle of the story led to my overall disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars Poor story lets down expectant readers.......2005-06-17

A few years back I reviewed this book in a more positive light but after reflection I have come to the conclusion this is in fact a vast disappointment.

Dr Dengelegi is to be applauded for keeping the Casca story alive but I feel that on balance it would have been best if he had not written his two books as they are rather poor in comparison. There are five points to be raised about the Liberator as an example:

Firstly, the character of Casca is amazingly passive. Sadler wrote Casca as an action figure, a decisive man which was what made Casca the success it was. This Casca is too ponderous, thought-wracked and indecisive. It simply isn't Casca.

Secondly the volume of the book is too much; the success of Casca was to rattle through with action. Remember who the target readership are, a turgid and ponderous plot that repeats itself with copious feasting is not what we casca fans wish to read. What next, Casca The Obese?

Thirdly if anyone writes a historical novel, even if its fictional, you must get the history right. Its no good writing a book, for example, set in the American Civil War where General Jackson wins the battle of Gettysburg in 1856 for the Confederates. Its not accurate history and makes a mockery of the historical setting. Dr Dengelegi in this instance makes a right mess of things by having Europeans being contracted by an African tribesman to bring a bride to his king. The setting of this story is between the years 1434-1440 and Europe was not even aware of Benin existing at that time, let alone having an African contact them (how, I ask, did this tribesman in fact contact them anyway??). Its implausible.

Fourthly when continuing a Casca series, you must be mindful of previous novels in the same series. Dr Dengelegi did not which is a cardinal sin. He has Casca at the end of the book on deck of Vasco da Gama's ship on the voyage to India which was in 1497; in the Conquistador by Barry Sadler Casca was a prisoner in Seville between 1485 and 1517. This was unforgiveable.

Fifthly there were many irrelevencies in the story and I feel that the publishers did not take the trouble to edit it which is a pity as about 40 pages could have been taken out without much trouble without affecting the overall storyline, a reduction of something like 15% of the volume.

A poor offering for people who expected greater things.

1 out of 5 stars WAY OFF THE MARK.......2004-10-30

Being a long time Casca/Barry Sadler fan, I was quite excited when I saw and bought this one. Oh my! This book is so off the mark from the orginal series is almost made me ill. I must admit I was unable to finish the thing. I will grant you that some of Sadler's work, some of the later books, were not up to the standard of his first four, but they were never the less interesting and readable. This one is not. You would think that the publishers could come up with something better than this to continue the series with. If you are along time Casca fan, you will be quite disappointed with this one...I would recommend you not even read it and certainly don't buy it..borrow it if you must. All in all, a really bad work.

1 out of 5 stars Casca: The Defiant.......2004-05-04

Unlike most casca books, casca seems to be a supporting character in this book. The brotherhood normally could only mean the brotherhood of the lamb....now a different one shows up....whenever the doc has anything to do with experiencing casca's past, usually they meet....and at the end the good doctor finishes by giving the impresion he will write it all down and forward a copy to his old co...dr (col) landries)...was his tie in here out of context or just a way to show the readers that you had read one or two of his books (sadler) and know some of his characters names, but not their motives or how they fit in the grand scheme of the book....please reread the series to get a better feel for casca, how he deals with those of his past, his ways of communicating those stories, and how casca lived....no just a byline headed to an end...but actually what casca does and experiences...

THE DEVER-AND RELATED FAMILIES 1600-1900rds.
The DeVere families 1400-1600rds in England are included.
With variant spellings.

THE DEVER-DEAVER FAMILIES in the book begin with Richard and Grace Deaver, 1600rds, in Maryland. It traces several of their descendants up into the 1900rds through church, courthouse and other records found during our many genealogy research trips to MD, NC, VA and WVa, Salt Lake City, Wash., DC. He applied for and was granted a license to keep an Ordinary (Inn). In 1661 men were ordered to Rendezvous at Richard Devers plantation.

More information about the book and a list of Dever-Deaver names in the book is given on our website. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jmlinder609/
And see below for some of the Families that are Related to the various Dever/Deaver families in our book.

The DeVere Families, undoubtedly the most powerful family connected with the County of Essex in early England is included. Some of this family held the title of Earl of Oxford, and other titles, for many generations. Castle Hedingham, their castle in Halstead district in Essex, was the scene of elaborate entertaining. Queen Maud died there, and great entertainments were held there for Henry VII. It's easy to imagine the great feasts and parties that were held there. This section of the book begins by giving you the background history of the family and facts about the surname. The DeVere families in our book begin with Aubrey (Aubrey) DeVere, born 1040, who went to England with William the Conqueror, but it gives earlier information on the surname. Our book traces several generations of these families through their marriages, births, deaths, and other things. It gives many of their famous escapades. [...]

    Book Description

As the title suggests, Gluten-Free 101: Easy, Basic Dishes without Wheat offers simple, streamlined recipes for those basic foods we all crave when we're gluten-free.

Crust French bread, chewy Pizza, decadent Brownies, flaky Pie Crust, old-fashioned Biscuits. They're all possible using Carol's new, versatile sorghum-based flour blend.

As all gluten-free beginners eventually learn, we can't bake with just one flour the way we did when we ate wheat.

This blend is more nutritious, with more protein and fiber than most gluten-free flour blends. And, you can vary the other flours in the blend to suit your personal tastes and dietary needs.

Recognizing that gluten-free beginners need guidance, Carol offers help on what to eat during the first few weeks after diagnosis, deciphering mysterious culinary terms, setting up a gluten-free pantry, using a bread machine, detecting hidden gluten in commercial foods, and dining away from home.

Recipes are organized into four categories (breads, breakfast, dessert, and main dishes) and offer nutritional content so you can manage your diet wisely. Extensive information about a wide variety of gluten-free flours helps you choose which ones are best for you.

Photos of many of the foods can be seen on Carol's web site.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book but not for a Non-Dairy Organic Diet.......2007-02-17

This is a good book if you don't mind eating refined sugar, butter, and milk. The recipes are good if you are on a traditional American diet, but I do wish that she had at least discussed non-dairy and non-refined sugar substitutes. If you already know how to use substitutions, I would recommend this. Otherwise I would suggest getting a different how-to book and perhaps getting this one as substitute. Overall, however, this book is exactly what it says in the title - the recipes are easy and I like the easy-going writing style.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful new tool.......2005-12-22

I just love this cookbook. It has been so useful to me for lots of reasons. There is a section in it on how exactly to make gluten-free bread and bread machines. And, if you know anything about cooking/baking gluten-free you'll understand that it's not always an easy task. There are several recipes I have tried and most have been very good. Carol Fenster seems to really know her stuff. I am quite pleased with my purchase!!

5 out of 5 stars Cooking without Gluten.......2004-07-30

I'm delighted that I could transform my wheat intolerance into a gratifying business that helps people eat the foods they love-without the ingredients they don't want. ~Carol Fenster

Carol Fenster, Ph.D. is one of America's gluten-free experts. Her work appears on the Health Network and she enjoys developing gluten-free products for manufacturers. She also counsels patients who are allergic to gluten. Carol's journey began with a case of chronic sinusitis. When she stayed away from wheat, she finally found relief.

Celiac disease now afflicts 1:133 Americans and is now the nation's most common inherited autoimmune disorder. Celiacs have to avoid gluten because it prevents the absorption of nutrients in food. This causes a cascading problem and can lead to anemia, osteoporosis and other health problems like rashes, stomach aches and general fatigue.

When I went to the store to find a Gluten-Free Flour Blend, I found the GF Garbanzo and Fava Flour blend by Bob's Red Mill. Apparently, Carol developed a gluten-free line for Bob's Red Mill. She also gives the recipe for her Sorghum Flour blend in this book.

Today I made the most delicious Banana Muffins using Carol's recipe from page 73. It is a quick bread recipe and you can make a Banana Bread variation. I did use ¾ cup milk instead of the recommended ¼-1/3. So, if you choose to buy a premixed flour blend, you might need to slightly adapt the liquid quantities. Overall, I was very impressed with the recipe and made 24 delicious and healthy banana muffins for breakfast. I'll freeze the leftover muffins for future banana muffin cravings.

Last week, I decided to try the Basic Bread recipe in my bread machine and then sliced the bread thinly and dried it out in the oven for 20 minutes to make crackers. They are the best crackers I've ever tasted. So far, I've only found rice-based crackers at the store, so this was a wonderful solution. You will need to look for items like potato starch, Xanthan gum, guar gum, soy lecithin and cider vinegar. I used rice wine vinegar and another flour in place of the potato starch. So, these recipes can also be adapted to taste. Most of the ingredients are now readily available at your grocery store on the natural foods isle. If you can't locate these in your town, Carol gives plenty of online sources.

This book is simply fascinating because the author is so knowledgeable and even suggests that you stay away from some flours you would never suspect. Her alternative list of flours for Gluten-Free baking will also be useful when you are shopping and reading labels. If you normally use wheat as a thickener, you might want to try Agar, Arrowroot, Cornstarch or Guar Gum. There is a handy substitute list on page 23.

If you decide you are serious about the gluten-free lifestyle, you might want to go through this book and make a list of the special ingredients. Once you have rounded up about 5 main ingredients, you can easily put together a number of healthy recipes. Xanthan gum, gelatin powder, tapioca flour, potato starch, soy lecithin, guar gum, sorgum flour, tapioca flour and a choice of corn flour, almond flour or bean flour are needed for this cookbook. It is nice to know that if you are allergic to nuts, you can also use bean flour or corn flour.

    Recipes I'm dreaming about trying:

    Breakfast Pizza
    Granola with Rice Flakes
Peanut Butter Cookies - I'll use Soy Butter
    Chicken Fried Steak
    Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Personally, I have a ton more energy when I stay away from wheat products, so this recipe book is helping me to adapt my lifestyle. I'm also excited about trying the Bob's Red Mill flours in my own recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Basic favorites and culinary delights.......2003-07-20

Enhanced with new flours and new formulas, Gluten-Free 101: Easy, Basic Dishes Without Wheat by Carol Fenster (Food Editor, "Living Without" magazine) is an informed and informative instructional resource for gluten-free dining, as well as being a thoroughly "kitchen cook friendly" guide to creating tasty recipes for folks who must avoid wheat and gluten because of food allergies. From Potato Bread; Peanut Butter Cookies; and Spicy Breaded Chicken; to Cheese Bread Balls; Carrot Cake; Spaghetti & Meatballs, and more, Gluten-Free 101 proves that wheat isn't necessary in order to enjoy a first-rate range of basic favorites and culinary delights.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible resource for those needing gluten-free foods.......2003-07-17

This isn't only a cookbook, it's a complete resource for anyone who requires a gluten-free cookbook. If you are one of the millions of people with celiac sprue or other sensitivity to grains, this book will serve you well. The author has a very good understanding of the problems of avoiding wheat and gluten. She lists the commercial ingredients such as modified food starch, hydrolyzed vegetable protein that may be wheat in origin. She tells you how to read labels, and gives advice such as avoiding oatmeal which, though it has no gluten, may be processed in wheat facilities or have been grown with wheat and thus somewhat contaminated. The section on alternative grains like amaranth, quinoa, rice, wild rice, milo and sorghum is comprehensive.

The recipes are for everything from pizza, breadsticks, foccacia to cakes, cookies, and other foods. The breadstick recipe tells you how to extrude the breadsticks from a hole in a plastic bag--a novel method easier than rolling dough for those tasty, crunchy snacks. The recipes frequently call for a flour mix recipe included in the book that substitutes for wheat flour. Even bread machines are covered.

The book is well-written and an excellent resource for people with wheat and grain dietary restrictions. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good general overview of the breed........2004-02-24

Think of this as an owner's manual for poodles. The book is aimed at those thinking about adopting or who have recently adopted a poodle. The history and characteristics of the poodle are highlighted, particularly the versatility of the breed. There are sections on preparing the home for a new puppy, feeding, health care, grooming, and training. There is lots of information here, for not much money.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of good information for new dog parents........1999-03-11

I loved it, particularly because my dog is pictured in the book several times (see page 61 for my favorite shot). The editor has done a series of these books, one for each popular breed. Good how-to info and photographic examples of dog care and training.

          Book Description

Gustavo Pérez Firmat arrived in America with his family at the age of eleven. Victims of Castro's revolution, the Pérez family put their life on hold, waiting for Castro's fall. Each Christmas, along with other Cuban families in the neighborhood, they celebrated with the cry, "Next year in Cuba." Growing up in the Dade County school system, and graduating from college in Florida, Pérez Firmat was insulated from America by the nurturing sights and sound of Little Havana. It wasn't until he left home to attend graduate school at the University of Michigan that he realized, as the Cuba of his birth receded farther into the past, he had become no longer wholly Cubano, but increasingly a man of two heritages and two countries.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all ages.......2001-02-01

As a young person who was born in the United States but whose parents were born in Cuba, identity has never been black and white for me--although it has always been blue, red, and white. This book crystallized so many emotions that I had felt my entire life but had never really examined. If you are 22 and have never been to Cuba, but still call yourself Cuban or if you are 60 and think if your childhood on that island paradise everyday--this book will make you laugh, it might make you cry, and it will certainly make you think. For over forty years now Cubans have been hoping for that "next year" to come to fruition, but we are still waiting. This book will make you long for "next year" like never before. Read it--you will never forget you did.

5 out of 5 stars Will next year be THE year?.......2000-09-06

That is the question that has echoed throughout the Cuban exile community for over 40 years. As the older generation fades, the new generation continues to ask, to wonder, if the next year will finally be the year when Cuba will be free and Castro will be, and there's no other way to say it, dead.

Perez Firmat and I stand a generation apart, yet reading this book, there really was no difference. The Cuban-American experience has much to do with yearning, an emotion that this book succeeded in evoking. We yearn for the Cuba we hear our relatives talk about. We yearn for the freedom of this never-seen homeland, to see the end of the tyranny. And we also yearn for this America, for the apple pie and Coca-Cola life we see and hear all around us, yet can never fully belong to.

Being Cuban-American is not only complex, it is two extremes thrown together. Finding our identity as we straddle two nations is a challenge even now, 40 years later, and even to people like me, first-generation Cuban-Americans. You are forced to ask over and over again, What am I? I am not Cuban, I was born here in the U.S. But I am not American, my "Cuban-ness" is such a strong, obvious part of me it cannot be denied.

Next Year in Cuba does a great job of giving an eloquent, humorous voice to this complexity. It's a great read on the Cuban-American culture, sure to give a better insight and appreciation to those wanting to know more.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and Very Funny.......2000-05-14

That we Cubans and Cuban-Americans can find humor in any situation--even the most tragic and overwhelming--is a testament to our strength. This book is a poignant, funny, and sometimes sad tale of one man's struggle to find his identity. It is a very personal self-examination, but one that most of us (all us "hyphenated" people) can relate to. Are you Cuban? Are you American? Are you "of Cuban descent"? Are you Cuban-American? Are you one person at home and another at work? These are difficult questions, and he walks us through the even more difficult process of trying to find an answer. Does he have an answer? Yes and no. The author also explores the Cuban community's rise from its initial status as an underprivileged, immigrant, "exile" community, to its present role as an assimilated, politically active, financially powerful ethinic force. All of this adds more depth to his own personal identity issues. The book is fascinating, thoughful, and full of relatives we can all look at and say "I have an aunt/uncle/mother/father/etc. just like that!"

In the wake of the Elian Gonzalez saga, I just hope everyone reads this and remembers how and why we got here. Thank you, Professor Firmat.

          5 out of 5 stars A touching yet humorous look one's Cuban-American roots........2000-03-28

This book made me come to terms with what being a Cuban born American means to me. Perez Firmat shares his own personal and sometimes painful experiences with the readers. In doing so he made it easier to define and understand my own experience as a Cuban-American who loves the United States yet has a yearning to gain a deeper understanding of his own Cuban roots.

          4 out of 5 stars Very touching.......1999-10-19

I am a first generation Cuban-American, and I was able to really appreciate some of the author's struggles and experiences. This book is not just for those who were born in Cuba, for for their children as well..Read it...
