Book Description
Unlike David Markson's most recent works in experimental writing, Going Down is a more traditional effort, a dark and masterfully plotted narrative of passion and violence set in Mexico in the 1960s. Three Americans, a man and two women, are living together in obvious intimacy. Their habits, strange to the Mexicans, are strangest of all to themselves.
When Fern Winters' attention is caught by movement behind a window in a run-down Greenwich Village apartment building, she can't suspect that her encounter with the apartment's occupant will eventually lead her to an abandoned chapel, in a tiny mountain village—clutching the bloody machete with which one of the three has been murdered.
Going Down is a rarity among novels—brilliantly and poetically written, faultlessly constructed, centered on fully realized people—completely uninhibited in its depiction of startling eroticism.

Going Down.......2005-01-22
"Going Down" opens with the image of a beautiful young girl, naked and in shock, clutching a bloody machete and kneeling in a cemetery chapel in a remote Mexican village. The reader soon learns that an even more alluring young woman has just been murdered. Over the book's fourteen chapters, the reader pieces together the events surrounding the murder through the streams of consciousness of six characters. With each character's perspective, more details come to light. What starts out as a murder mystery rapidly turns into a remarkable and compelling study of despair and guilt.
The two main characters in this book are literate, superlatively intelligent, attractive and talented. However, both are burdened with flaws and emotional suffering worthy of a Sophoclean tragedy. And, speaking of Sophocles, the Oedipus myth is a recurring motif in this novel. In spite of the book's serious themes, there is humor to be found here as well. One of the chapters in the book is devoted to the stream of consciousness of a novelist with writer's block. This chapter is hilarious and provides much needed comic relief in the otherwise somber and disturbing narrative.
This book is often compared to Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano. In fact, David Markson dedicated this book to the memory of Malcolm Lowry and used some of the same symbols employed by Lowry. For example, both Markson and Lowry use a pariah dog as a symbol for the guilt that literally hounds a character. Like Lowry's novel, this book is filled with literary and artistic allusions, vivid imagery and symbolism. There is also much word-play. Sometimes the double meanings are comical, sometimes haunting and sad, but they are consistently startling and never fail to make the reader stop and think.
Two aspects of this book make it difficult to read. First, the plot is conveyed through the characters' confused perceptions and incomplete thoughts. There are many unfinished sentences. Second, I found the story very unsettling - so much so that I contemplated putting the book aside. This is one of those books that puts the reader's psyche through the mill. However, when I finished it, I was happy that I'd found and read this fine work.

Best book of the trilogy.......2007-08-31
The first book is by far the best, followed closely by the second (Viperhand). It offers a thrilling experience, good characters and plenty of mystery. Also not too predictable and some nice twists with Realms oldskools that may even surprise the hardcore fans.
After reading the first book you simply MUST read the second, then leave the ending open.
Stay clear of the third volume, cause it spoils everything in my humble opinion.
Well worth reading over and over again!.......2007-05-23
The great Captain-General Cordell has undertaken a new and exciting adventure, to sail his army west, and reach the far-eastern land of Kara-Tur. However, when they reach land, they find not Kara-Tur, but Maztica, a land of natural beauty and human savagery - and above all, a land with lots of gold! But, things begin to spin out of control, and soon Cordell's greed begins a war that may just destroy the entire land of Maztica. This is a story of bravery and unthinking violence, of conscience and redemption.
Let me start out by saying that I am a big fan of good old fashioned, swords-and-sorcery fantasy literature. But, if there's one thing that I enjoy even more, it's a story where the author successfully takes the swords-and-sorcery to a whole new milieu. Well, I must say that I think that the author of this book succeeded admirably.
In this book, the author does a great job of bringing pre-Columbian Mesoamerica to life, and then adapting the story of the coming of the conquistadors to it. I found the story to be enjoyable, and quite interesting. Overall, I think that this is a great book, well worth reading over and over again...as I have!
Definetly the Best Forgotten Realms book I've read..........2003-05-22
This book is great, the character development is very realsistic in my opinion. Contrary to another review, I would say that the Knights of Helm vs Native Mazticans conflict is nail-biting. It does not represent the Invaders as any more "Civilised" than those they attack. They are described as having a "washed out" appearance, "strange, sprouting" facial hair and also carrying a rank odour. In the way that events are told, I myself interpreted the book as saying that the conflict was unfortunate, and more the fault of the evil worshippers of the Maztican War God. Another brilliant factor would have to be a secret conspiracy element which definetly does not rip of history.
This is by far the most well-developed Forgotten Realms book I have ever read, although some humour wouldn't have gone amiss.
bad bad bad.......2002-04-22
The historical aspect is a rip-off. Names are changed, but the premise is totally unoriginal. Also, I felt betrayed when the characters who started out as 'cool' turned out to be crazy, violent individuals who suddenly didn't make sense in the story or world such as a Dwarf who didn't have a problem with his army slaughtering children. The general who we're supposed to hope succeeds leads an army of child/women killers. And, the whole trilogy seems to say the evil guys are OK because they're the 'civilized' ones. There are plenty of better Forgotten Realms novels out there. Save yourself some time and skip this series.
Page Turner.......2000-07-15
I found Ironhelm to be a book that was extermely hard to put down. Right from the start it immerses you in action and adventure. The main plot was easy to guess, as this novel seemed to be based on the Spanish invasion of Mexico. Historical boredom is spared, however, with the lively infusion of magic and fantasy. Although true to the Forgotten Realms setting, it adds a new and original continent. My only complaint is the brief details in some parts of this book. This lack, however, keeps the book fast paced.
Customer Reviews:
The book would be enjoyed by New Adventure series readers.......1999-03-12
The book brings back many of the elements that I have always enjoyed about the New Adventures series. However, some of the plot devices were somewhat predictible. The authors have a good grasp of humor and adventure writing which they combine in this tale of a futuristic Mars.

Pam Anderson's CookSmart: Perfect Recipes for Every Day is a collection of comfort-food favorites that she's perfected through a long process of trial and error. From her own experience as a chef, cookbook author (The Perfect Recipe), and food columnist for USA Weekend, Anderson has created a rigorous approach for selecting the best possible recipe for any given dish, winnowing out weaker, less satisfactory recipes in several stages. She starts by reviewing several recipes for the same dish. For example, Anderson noted that the conventional method of making fajitas included marinating the meat before it is cooked, which, in her opinion, masks the rich flavor of steak. In her version, the fajita meat gets a spice rub before cooking and then a brief, post-cooking sauna-like repose in a simple mixture of lime juice and garlic. The resulting fajitas have the relaxed subtle flavor of garlic, lime, and cumin that complement rather than overpower the tender steak.
This book provides good instruction for the beginning chef, demonstrating how to use the basic techniques to perfect one's own recipe. But there is a lot to read, so be warned. This book is a time commitment if attempting to read cover to cover, and it doesn't necessarily work in the real-time experience of looking and cooking. However, if you're searching for a collection of great, gourmet-style recipes for home-cooked favorites, CookSmart is a pretty wise choice. --Teresa Simanton
Book Description
Perfection has never been so convenient. Pam Anderson's infallible renditions of favorite dishes have made her America's most trusted cook. In COOKSMART, she returns with can't-fail recipes for everyday meals we all love, from spaghetti and meatballs, oven-fried chicken, and fajitas to foods for special occasions like crab cakes and vegetable lasagna. Pam knows today's cooks are too busy to tolerate less than superb results. She has tested and retested every recipe dozens of times so each one works flawlessly in real cooking and entertaining situations. Cooking smart is about cooking sensibly. It means reducing the time and effort that go into a dish while delivering every bit of the flavor. You'll find oven-cooked ribs as succulent as those barbecued all day over a fire, a voluptuous chocolate cake as easy as a boxed mix, and cinnamon buns as fragrant and pillowy as they are convenient. Cooking smart also means creating dishes the whole family can enjoy, such as turkey burgers as juicy as the best all-beef burgers but much lower in fat and cholesterol, and a crisp and creamy Caesar salad that isn't made with raw eggs. COOKSMART recipes eliminate the unnecessary steps and troublesome quirks that keep you from making your favorite dishes. You'll learn how to prepare a pot roast as juicy and tender as the old-fashioned kind in just ninety minutes. You won't need special equipment for the meals in this book. Every ingredient used can be found in your local supermarket. In COOKSMART, you'll be able to choose from dozens of holiday standbys: fresh shrimp cocktail, stuffed mushrooms, beef tenderloin for a crowd, silky pumpkin pie, and perfect pecan pie. And you'll find just as many effortless family-pleasing meals to rely on during the week, such as chicken Parmesan and Pork Tenderloin with Curried Apple Crust, which comes with many flavor variations. In every case, cooking smart means making a dish the very best it can be: a gazpacho chock full of summer-vegetable flavor, a pasta salad that -- for once! -- tastes as good as it looks, and a peach pie with a crisp crust and a fruity flavor that slices to perfection. In COOKSMART, you'll not only get more than a hundred impeccable dishes that will become part of your cherished repertoire, but you'll acquire a wealth of culinary knowledge that you can apply to other recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Too much trial and error.......2006-09-19
This is a very unusual cookbook. For each recipe, there's a few pages about experiments she did to come up with the final recipe.
In that, this reads a whole lot like Cooks Illustrated.
Frankly, I like to read what WORKS, not what didn't, then finally, what did.
Since one of her goals was to make things "simple", it is very hard to know that the recipe calls for something because it works, or it's just the thing you can find at an average supermarket.
I want this to be a comment. It's not going to turn off everyone.
But if you'd rather read an Alton Brown book than Cooks Illustrated, this may not be an ideal book for you.
I am a GREAT cook and this book has made me even better........2006-03-27
I am a huge cookbook maven. I have hundreds, some good ones and some were a waste of money. This is easily in my top 10 of cookbooks. I will now buy a Pam Anerson book by reputation alone. My entire family adores the Ceasar Salad. The Pasta salad combo's she has, has sent more that one friend to nirvana. We live in Malaysia and the food here is dynamite, but yes we crave good old American food and Pam is my go to girl for those needs. If you like easy recipes that you can find ingredients for, buy this book. Eat and be happy.
always a winner - a reliable source.......2005-06-15
I'm a busy Mom who none-the-less wants my kids to eat real food. I don't have time for mistakes and trial and error. The book explains the entire process in an easy to read and understand manner and without fail, the recipes have all turned out fabulous. In fact, they are so delicious they have earned me quite a reputation. Now, whenever there is a pot luck - I get requests. The Blue Ribbon Chili is like the filet mignon of chili - I went to a barbecue this weekend and brought the Asian pasta salad and every single person asked me to send the recipe. I just got an email asking once again. I sent them the link to the book instead ;-) I sing Pam's praises often. Now my sister, her brother-in-law and several friends are all devotees. I highly recommend this book (my primary resource) as well as Pam Anderson's "How to Cook Without A Book" - the pan sauces alone make that one a worthwhile purchase.
A Chemist in the Kitchen.......2004-06-24
I loved CookSmart. As a chemist, I enjoy doing experiments at home in the kitchen as well as at work. The way that Pam described the process that she went through to find the ideal conditions for each recipe mirrors the careful manipulation and recordkeeping that accompanies a scientific experiment. I like knowing why each ingredient was chosen and what happened with other ingredients to make them less than perfect. Even if you don't appreciate the detailed dialogue that precedes each recipe, you will appreciate the results of using each perfected recipe. I tried the Chicken Parmesan, Oven-Fried Chicken, Turkey Burgers and some of the hints for perfect pie crust. All of the food turned out wonderfully and satisfied my need to occasionally prepare gourmet type food for my family. I am looking forward to trying more of the recipes!
So many favorites!.......2003-02-16
This book reads like a novel. I love the essay that prefaces each recipe. Very entertaining reading. As for the recipes, I love the pot roast. That has become a favorite. The cinnamon rolls are fabulous. And the waffles recipe is the best I've ever tried. They really do stay crispy like she promises. The only flaw is the pumpkin pie recipe. The filling was way too much for the 9" pan size recommended. If overflowed in my oven causing a HUGE mess. I live at a pretty high altitude, so maybe that was the problem too.

Twenty fresh interpretations of classic, romantic, and alternative themes for wedding flowers are presented with 200 ravishing color photos and a wealth of stylish ideas for bouquets, baskets, headdresses, and table arrangements. Whether you marry in a church or in more informal surroundings, this book will guide you toward your ideal style: the classic elegance of a bouquet of white cyclamens and trailing eucalyptus; the romance of winter captured in an opulent floral muff; or the contemporary chic of a single perfect camellia. A wedding is, for most, the floral event of a lifetime; yet all too often, flowers are chosen and arranged with little thought given to individual style. Here, at last, is a book that recognizes the need for a fresh approach to wedding flowers.
Customer Reviews:
Not practical for flowershop owners.......2005-09-16
If you are a flowershop owner and want fresh ideas for your customers this is not the book you are looking for. There are not many greenhouse flowers you commonly find in flowershops. Most are simple, garden flowers.
Fresh and classic.......2001-11-05
I have looked at many beautiful wedding flower books, but this takes the cake for people with a love for flowers in a natural setting. It is nice to see a high-class floral designer use natural flowers in a pleasing style, not the traditional "FTD" look. This book will come in handy!
Expected different.......2000-06-28
I was slightly disappointed by this book. I expected more realistic arrangements with flare that might help those on a tight budget. The pictures however were extrodinary and they did help in my choices as to what flower photgraphs well. If you are planning an outdoor wedding with a big budget. . .this book is for you. For those of you like me, on a tight budget and an indoor wedding, I wouldn't recommend this particular book.
beautiful photos, creative ideas.......2000-02-04
This is the best "picture" wedding book that I have seen. Flowers are coordinated to unique fashion and wedding themes. Not only beautiful flowers, but lovely gowns, hairstyles, table settings, and outdoor decorations are featured. Everything is very elegant and creative!
Quite Disappointed!.......1999-11-25
Contrary to the one other reviewer of this book, I was very dissappointed. I want a traditional wedding with a flare. This book shows very out of the ordinary flower ideas that everyday people will not and cannot use. However, the book does show a few nice 'flowers in your hair' ideas, but for the price of this un-inspiring book, it is Not worth it. Spend your money elsewhere.

Book Description
The Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, and Teutonic Knights frequently appear in the French, German, and English epic and romance literature of the Middle Ages. Love, War, and the Grail examines the religious roles of the military orders, such as caring for the sick, their warrior role of fighting Muslims, and the role of Templars in the Grail romances. It traces how these roles developed over time and looks at the role of these military religious orders in fiction of the Middle Ages. Nicholson's analysis of the military orders in medieval fictional literature is of interest both to historians and to literary specialists. This is the first in-depth study to consider the subject throughout the medieval period.

An inspiring, easy read!.......2007-05-23
I took this book to the beach with me on vacation- great decision! I loved the advice and perspectives of the authors on creating a more meaningful life, while the stories from contributors kept me entertained.
GGG was definitely an inspiration; I enjoyed it so much I bought additional copies for birthday gifts. Five stars!
Embrace your life.......2007-01-09
This is a wonderful book full of stories of ordinary women and how they've dealt with challenges we'd wake up at night screaming about. It reminds us that everyone has a story and the quality of our lives depends on how we deal with it.

Eclectic, fun read........2006-05-02
Something for just about anyone interested in anything dark, lurid and unusual. I read S&G quickly cover to cover and now find myself, years later, still revisiting it one article at a time.
a lot of fun.......2005-03-10
I've never seen anything like this. A kind of super-intense book-form interview anthology, with lots of fiction and articles tossed about, mainly focused on the angry, intense literature and movies. Wound up reading a friend's copy while she was on the phone, and by the time she hung up, I'd read most of the Margaret Cho interview and knew this was something WAY different. It's been a good ten years since I paid any attention to zines and the underground scene in general, I got out of college, bought a house, and took on "the adult world". Sex and Guts made me realize how much I'd left behind with my beach bum/slacker days, when my friends were all in bands and little magazines were all over. I actually used to know a few of the people in here. This book has a real kick to it, gets you reading, and every ten minutes laughing your head off. It got me interested in Lydia Lunch again, and Gene Gregrits is pretty hilarious with these interviews, I'll be looking for more from him. True, there's a lot of familiar names here, but they're handled in a fresh and engaging way that gets you thinking, with long conversation type interviews, with digressions and bickering and some really nasty, smart humor. It's a real gem, in a gonzo sort of style which is authentic and scathing at times. Might piss you off in sections but that's part of its charm. I loved it!!!!
Boooring.......2003-10-02
This Gregoritis character sure fancies himself. Unfortunately, that makes for rather tedious reading.
If there was a zero rating, this would get it........2003-09-01
The review underneath is, unfortunately, biased. Well-written, but biased all the same. Reading the review, it becomes painfully aware that said reviewer is probably a friend of Lunch's or Gregorits'.
My appraisal will be short, but bitter: This book sucks.
Yeah, RE/Search isn't like this...but then again, V. Vale doesn't obsess over Britney Spears throughout his books.
I'd like it if it weren't as pompous as it is. If you can get it for 5 bucks somewhere, do so. Reading this is like a trainwreck meets a miscarriage.
A word from County Barrel.......2003-07-09
Ladies and gentlemen...
Do not let the above review dissuade you. Don't let it corrupt you, footbind you, blind you, or cripple you. I'm not exactly sure what criteria said reviewer suckles or embraces... but it's obviously somehow misguided.
Allow a voice of reason to shout from the mountains: Sex and Guts no. 4 is, without a doubt, the best collection of interviews and articles that I've EVER had the pleasure to read. And I'll stand on record as saying that it's miles above Vale or Juno's most recent offerings. Think RE/Search with a speed charged pulse, the best parts of David Kerekes' Headpress, and a big spoonful of Jim Goad attitude.
Editors Gene and Lydia should be applauded for giving us this slice of cake. Warhol's Interview be damned! SG no. 4 makes everything else look like grade school scribbling...

Raymond Roussel and the Republic of Dreams
ASIN: 0939691027 |
Book Description
Fiction/ Autobiobraphy/ Translation/ Black Studies:
Raymond Roussel's story Among the Blacks (translated by Ron Padgett), together with Ron Padgett's memoir about growing up among black people.
Customer Reviews:
Four Stars for Raymond's part.. NO stars for Padgett.......2007-02-06
I'm not sure what the strategy was.. Maybe Roussel's story was so small, the publishers know they couldn't release it on its own and so had Padgett write an unrelated story with the TINIEST bit of similar ideas (oh, Roussel's character is among black people albeit in a surreal, twisted story.. I think Padgett should have a dry memoir about being around black people.. Hmm.. yeah that fits!). Disregard Padgett's self-absorbed story and just read Roussel's. It's a pretty fevered account of proto-surrealism.
Padgett's & Roussel's Blacks.......2002-02-19
Among the Blacks consists of two works: Padgett's translation of Roussel's early story "parmi les noirs," first published in 1935 in his book Comment j'ai écrit certain de mes livres, together with Padgett's memoir focusing upon his own experience among black people. Roussel's story, about a master mariner named White who encounters an African chief named Booltable, is built upon the kind of whimsical and extravagant word play (its first and last sentences are identical except for one letter in one word -- "pooltable" / "Booltable") for which Roussel was idolized by the French Surrealists. In contrast, as he writes in his Afterword, Padgett's memoir "grew out of the nagging need to come to grips with the frustrations of being a white American who had grown up in a racist environment and who, despite his rejections of racism at an early age, had rarely felt unselfconscious in the company of a black person." Its language is transparent and unmannered, "an attempt somply to tell the trutgh, and to do so with a minimum of artfulness."
