Fun, fast read.......2007-09-12
Great for a long plane ride or for winding down after a long stressful day. While I wouldn't recommend this series for a book club, it is an enjoyable quick read.
Great Series.......2007-05-15
I enjoy this series a lot and think Nancy Martin does a great job of creating interesting characters that you care about -- with the exception of Libby. I really wish she'd do away with this intolerable character, particularly since she has more than enough to keep your interest with Nora and Emma.
Another Great Blackbird Mystery.......2007-05-07
I thoroughly enjoy all the Nora Blackbird stories, with their Philedelphia high society intrigues and especially Nora's fabulous vintage wardrobe! While they are certainly light fluff, they are fun and breezy and always introduce us to some unique characters. My only quibble is that I think it's time for Nora and Michael to make up their minds, once and for all, about being together or not. They seem to have the same old arguments about Mick's past and his ties with his crime family. It was fertile ground the first, second or even third time, but by now they're just starting to seem too wishy-washy to keep my interest. Still, even with that minor caveat, I love the chemistry between them and the way Nancy Martin crafts their dialogue. Keep 'em coming, Ms. Martin!
Have Your Cake and Kim Him Too:A Blackbird Sisters Mystery.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderful no thinking way to spend the afternoon read. Funny story about 3 sisters and how they are different but are the same. One for all and All for one. The story is enjoyable and the series of the Blackbird Sisters has been a wonderful fine to enjoy and can wait for the next book to be out. Total way to escape and have a good read.
Blackbird Sisters - A fun ride.......2007-01-08
Reading the Blackbird Mysteries are always an enjoyable "get-away" from everyday life. The inside scoop on the rich and famous of New York society and a frowned upon romance the reader can't help but cheer for...what more could a reader want?

New Author, Great Read........2005-08-01
I was so pleased, but a bit apprehensive when I took a chance on this novel by an unknown author.
There was no reason for my concern. This author has amazing storytelling ability and weaves the arcane and science elements flawlessly. Not since the works of David Eddings have I enjoyed a fantasy novel so much.
A Refreshing Fantasy.......2005-07-04
It is rather refreshing to pick up a fantasy novel that is not simply based on Tolkien's elves, orcs and dwarves. This book is very unique, begins with strong characters who deal with seemingly insurmountable problems and suffer to overcome them. This story really captured my imagination and I have stayed up till the middle of the night reading it!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, though I think those not accustomed to fantasy would like it as well. The setting is fantasy, but the character development, plot, and overall presentation of the book is very good and should be welcome to readers of all kinds.
This is a must have, couldn't put it down........2005-03-31
First off let me say, I am a very critical reader. If I'm not hooked in the first few chapters you can forget it. If the middle of the book starts to bore me I'll throw it right back on the book shelf with out reading it all the way through. I have a few favorite authors that leave me begging for a next book and this author has been able to do that. I can't wait to get my hands on book two. Into Abaddon's Abyss doesn't slow down. It is intensely colorful and the characters are absolutely magical. The author of Ancient Mirrors reminds us how fortunate we are to have writers that can help us escape reality for a moment and spend time in wonderful places such as AEstretfordae.
An Adventure One MUST Take!!.......2005-03-27
Jayel has found a way to place you into the steps of each character from the VERY beginning of this book!
The reader can not help but become so incredibly wrapped up within each turn of the page, that it does nothing but leaves a burning desire to read more and to see just what is going to be taking place next.
Yavie has truly won a place not only in my mind but also in my heart. I can not wait until the next book comes out.
A Truly Amazing, Wonderful Read.
GREAT JOB!!

Having more stories from A.E. van Vogt repackaged and reprinted can only be good news: along with Heinlein and Asimov, this prolific, wild-eyed author deserves much of the credit for pioneering science fiction's golden age back in the '40s and '50s. As a sort of crazy old uncle of modern sci-fi, though, van Vogt doesn't always get his due: his writing wasn't always spectacular, his plot and pacing fell somewhere between harum-scarum and willy-nilly, and his ideas were delivered in relentless salvos, each more outlandish than the last. But an embarrassment or not, the visionary van Vogt is indisputably part of the family, an entertaining and daring author whose influence can be seen in the work of countless other writers.
This 288-page paperback binds together two of van Vogt's better stories, "The Weapon Makers of Isher" and "The Weapons Shops of Isher," published in sequel-prequel order back in 1946 and 1951. These time-hopping, politically convoluted tales follow the struggle between the oppressive (but beautiful) Empress Innelda and the superadvanced libertarian Weapon Shops ("The right to buy weapons is the right to be free," reads the storefront sign). Much of the melodramatic plot revolves around the Shops' immortal, ultragenius founder Robert Hedrock, his conflict with the Empress, and their differing visions for the future of humanity, but don't fret too much over the details: van Vogt keeps your head comfortably a-swim in a steady stream of whiz-bang gadgetry, plot twists, and breakneck action. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Two classic Van Vogt works, The Weapon Makers and The Weapon Shops of Isher form the complete story of Robert Hedrock and the Empire of Isher. They are about revolution through time travel, the right to bear arms, the end of the universe and the beginning of the next.
Customer Reviews:
Van's best series in one big book.......2001-12-30
"The Weapon Shops of Isher" is an interestingly mosaic novel based on a few short stories published in the '40s, and the plot strands understandably hardly touch, but the overall effect is one of a nice cross-section of this society.
"The Weapon Makers," a 1943 novel that was written as a finale to the stories that made up "The Weapon Shops of Isher" is even better than the first, and is perhaps Van's finest novel. The plot is very straight-forward but nonetheless full of surprises and interesting turns. The writing style is far better than most of his output, which when combined with the excellent plot and characters makes an outstanding masterpiece.
Confusion about two different books.......2000-07-27
Another reviewer has reviewed a different book. "Reviewer: Trevor J Hall (see more about me) from PERRY,, ME USA At last the two books of the life of the mutant prince of the House of Lin have been combined in one cover...."
This is actually a review of _Empire of the Atom_, an SFnal re-telling of Robert Graves's _I Claudius_, and a quite different book, also by Van Vogt.
As to the books at hand, they are some of vV's best, but suffer from all his characteristic faults -- the too frequent plot changes, the endless consipiricies (often where the leaders of two opposed sides are secretly the same person) a society whose economic basis is dubious at best. But it is a page-turner, and one that keeps this reader returning from time to time. A classic that any SF fan should read sometime or other.
a classic by a giant in the field.......2000-07-02
At last the two books of the life of the mutant prince of the House of Lin have been combined in one cover. A E van Vogt is a master wordsmith, 'thus died a whole legion of men', and this is one of his masterpeices. Somehow both dated and yet timeless this is the career of a mutant prince overcoming his handicaps and ultimately triumphing against his political foes, inspiring loyalty in his companions and gaining the cooperation and admiration of his piratical foes. The tale is told in a somewhat ironic vein which is unforgettable. I have spent many years wishing for a further sequel.
Justly reprinted.......2000-06-27
I have not seen this edition, but both the component novels, "The weapon makers" and "The weapon shops of Isher" are old friends. These are among the better of van Vogt's works, perhaps not the absolute best, but close. For books written some fifty years ago still remarkably readable. Justly reprinted.
Note that "The weapon makers" was written first but that "The weapon shops of Isher", added later, is a prequel. The stories are also different in tone: "The makers" is highly dynamic (almost dynamite), while the "The shops" is much quieter.

Super Reader.......2007-09-01
A short book in three parts. A mysterious weapon shop appears in the present, and only lets certain people in. One man finds himself in the future. A young man there finds out he has superhuman luck altering powers.
The third section involves a man who has made himself immortal, and is out to save society via his weapon shops and other schemes.

A great sentiment unfulfilled.......2007-04-10
This starts out promisingly as a story about a shadow government in a totalitarian state. The rebels are fronted by weapon shops because they, like many libertarians today, believe that personal liberty is expressed by by the right to bear arms (ie, the right to defend yourself from criminals, even if they are governments). By the end, however, we have almost no glimpse of the illicit society. A modest look at the totalitarian one. And almost none of the philosophical underpinnings. But that's typical Alfred Elton van Vogt. His works are often vague and mystifying.
Reportedly, van Vogt exploited his dreams for some of his plotting which may explain why this one unfolds in a dreamlike way, morphing from one setting into another, often winding up in fantastical environs. Unfortunately, in this case, the story meanders around the periphery of the conflict between the monarchy and the weapons shops.
Here, like in too many of his stories, van Vogt's characters are blanks without depth or personality. All they do is justify the quotation marks. (The exceptions are van Vogt's supermen, who exude confidence, and his alien creatures, who are generally primitive and animal whatever their technological level.)
Probably because van Vogt wasn't a trained scientist, he blithely took science to the n-th degree -- a million million years into the past, a gigantic floating store, immortals, an IQ of 10,000. Such concepts were new and daring when van Vogt began writing.
In the end, like many of his other stories, this one moves quickly. Probably due to his system of stringing together 800-word mini-dramas to form the whole.
I almost never remember a van Vogt plot. But I do remember that is was a good ride. And I'm surprised and delighted that for the fraction of his writing life devoted to the weapon shops, van Vogt spoke libertarian.
"The Right to Buy Weapons is the Right to be Free".......2006-05-02
Sounds like a blurb from the NRA, but in fact this slogan is one of the lynch-pins of one of the most complicated and headlong adventures that van Vogt (often called the master of the re-complicated story) ever wrote.
The Weapon Shops, like many of his stories, was actually written and published as several stories before being collected and somewhat edited into book form. In this case, the major portions were published as "The Seesaw" (Astounding, July 1941), "The Weapon Shop" (Astounding, Dec 1942), and "The Weapon Shops of Isher (Thrilling Wonder Stories, Feb. 1949). It is important to note the age of these stories, written as they were during the so-called `Golden Age' of science fiction, when ideas were far more important than character or great prose style. This book is absolutely replete with ideas, but the prose, dialogue, and character development certainly leave something to be desired when compared to modern novels. While reading this book you need to let the story line and ideas overwhelm you, and ignore some of the more blatant excesses in writing style.
It starts with a Weapon Shop magically appearing in a 1950 neighborhood. When a policeman attempts to open its door, he finds it locked - but when a newspaperman tries it just a minute later, it opens - and the newspaperman finds himself in the Isher Empire, which has been around for 4700 years, and where the Weapon Shops effectively form the `opposition' to this government. This is plot thread number one. The second thread is that of a young man wishing to leave his provincial village and make his fortune in the big city - where he finds that he is a `callidetic giant', able to beat any game of chance, and ends up amassing a fortune so large that he can upset the economic stability of the Empire. Thread three involves the world's only immortal, Robert Hedrock, who was instrumental in establishing both the Empire and the Weapon Shops, the first to provide a stable form of government, the second to ensure that the Empire can neither stagnate nor become an unopposed dictatorship. Stir in invisibility, time travel, and the secret of faster-than-light propulsion and you have an explosive mix that will keep you turning pages as fast as you can (and don't you dare think about the plausibility of any of this!).
I think I first read this book around 1960, when I was about twelve, and many of the images of this book made a large impression on me: the casinos and their very futuristic gambling machines, the giant computer that kept track of all the vital statistics of every person in the solar system, the idea of waging war by shifting in time, the `brothels' of the day, even the `energy weapons' that the Weapon Shops sold. Reading it today, these same items still fascinate - and the ending is still an explosive bang.
The thematic point of the right to have weapons strong enough to protect the individual from any government excesses is a major one, and certainly was very topical when it was written at the height of WWII. However, this point is not examined very closely for its downside, because in the story such weapons could `sense' whether or not the person purchasing it had the appropriate mental outlook - an easy way out of the problems seen by today's society with too many weapons freely available to almost anyone.
This is possibly his strongest novel, certainly at least as good as his Slan and The World of Null-A, as here all the various ideas and plot threads do seem to come together in a cohesive whole, something that could not be said about a lot of his works. And it is a pell-mell, head-over-heels, fun and fascinating read.

One Of The Best Sci-Fi Writers Ever........2004-09-04
I have read practically everyone in sci-fi and to me, there are a few standouts, like: Robert Heinlen, Andre Norton, Murray Leinster, and A.E. Van Vogt. This is a great story if you appreciate early sci-fi circa 1951. I would also suggest his book, "War Against The Rull". If you are going to look for this book, "Weapon Shops of Isher", try to get the Ace Double-D version with Murray Leinster's "Gateway To Elsewhere" included. A two books in one issue. Pretty rare and you'll pay for it.

The best of the Grand Finales volumes.......2005-08-06
Of the three plated dessert books that Boyle and Moriarty made together (the other two are Grand Finales: A Neoclassic View of Plated Desserts, and A Modernist View of Plated Desserts), I would say that this one is the best. The pictures here are as gorgeous as always, but the presentations and recipes are much more feasible than the other two. Unlike a lot of the dishes from Modernist View, these ones are actually servable in a restaurant, or at a dinner party. They are not over the top dishes that are just for show. I would give this 4 1/2 stars if I could. The one thing that prevents it from being a 5 star book is the lack of glossary and the constant use of 'non-edible garnishes'. I am not a fan of huge sugar garnishes that no-one is going to eat, or if they do it would break their teeth. Don't get me wrong, they look really pretty, but I believe that everything you put on the plate you should be able to eat. Just difference in styles, I guess.

A very, very awesome book. You have to be hard core to want this book. It took about 5 hours for me and some friends to make one of the desserts, but we had a blast. It measures everything out with wait, so you don't have to worry if you bought the jumbo eggs when the recipee assumes you are using large. If you like cooking, buy this book. If you don't like cooking, I still say buy this book.
The sorbets alone are worth the price of the book

General Dog Training book... Not Yorkie Specific.......2007-03-27
I purchased this book hoping to get some insight as to how to train a small dog. This book is definately not worth the money! In one section, it claims you should use a choker like collar on the Yorkie for traning purposes. That is the WORST thing you should use on a toy dog. Chest harnesses should always be used. This book is too general and not worth the paper it's printed on in regards to training a Yorkie.
Not worth the money.......2006-03-07
I bought this book hoping to get insight on raising and training my new yorkie, but all it gave was information on dog shows. I did not buy my dog for dog competitions, so all the information in the book was irrelevant. I did not need to know dog show terms and requirements for entering a dog into a competition. Use your money for Your Yorkshire Terrier's Life by Elaine Waldorf Gewirtz. Very helpful book. Gave good tips on house training.

South to a Very Old Place.......2000-04-03
If Langston Huges is the poet laureate of Jazz, then Albert Murray is its scribe. Murray's indelible style continues in this wonderful trip down South. Murray grew up in Mobile, Alabama, after high school he went to Tuskegee Institute then on to the military where he was the first black to become an officer in US Air Force history. After retiring from the Air Force Murray settled in New York City where he lives today. A number of years ago Murray's publisher suggested that he go home and write about the differences in Mobile before WWII and Mobile now. Murray takes the reader along with him on his trip through his own personal history with remarkable rhythm. There are any number of notable sequences including the first paragraph which destined to join the ranks of "Call me Ishmael" and "It was the best of times it was the worst of times..." Another striking point in the novel is when Murray checks into a celebrated hotel in his hometown and his bags are carried by a young white boy who calls him sir and mister. It is contrast against Murray's memories of this same hotel that he was not allowed to enter when he was a boy because he was black. The book also includes plenty of the rhythmic writing that has made Murray one of America's most cherished authors.
There are any number of notable sequences including the first paragraph which is destined to join the ranks of "Call me Ishmael" and "It was the best of times it was the worst of times..." Another striking point in the novel is when Murray checks into a celebrated hotel in his hometown and his bags are carried by a young white boy who calls him sir and mister. It is contrast against Murray's memories of this same hotel that he was not allowed to enter when he was a boy because he was black. The book also includes plenty of the rhythmic writing that has made Murray one of America's most cherished authors.
