Never mind who did the deed with New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum at the end of High Five. Five months later, that night's only a dim, cherished memory, and Stephanie's freezing her butt off on a Trenton bridge trying to keep her friend Carol--caught shoplifting some crotchless panties she was too embarrassed to buy--from committing suicide.
Truth is, I didn't for a minute think she'd jump. For one thing, she was wearing a four-hundred-dollar jacket from Wilson Leather. You just don't jump off a bridge in a four-hundred-dollar jacket. It isn't done. The jacket would get ruined. Carol was from the Chambersburg section of Trenton, just like me, and in the Burg you gave the jacket to your sister, then you jumped off the bridge.
When Stephanie finally talks Carol down and makes it in to work at Vincent Plum Bail Bonds, it's only to find that her libido-boosting pal Ranger, the professional bounty hunter and sometime hit man, has disappeared. A building owned by black-market arms dealer Alexander Ramos has burned down, with Ramos's son Homer lying inside, dead from a gunshot wound. Ranger, who was caught on film there by video cameras, is wanted for questioning. Stephanie's boss Vinnie wants her to find him, but Stephanie, who knows she won't find Ranger if he doesn't want to be found, refuses. Soon everyone, from her cop boyfriend Joe Morelli to the two Laurel and Hardy wannabes who suddenly start following her around Trenton in a badass black Lincoln, thinks she's hot on Ranger's trail.

And Stephanie's got other things to worry about. For one thing, Grandma Mazur's moved in with her, and so has Bob, a golden retriever who's only partly house trained. Then Ranger starts popping up at odd times of the night, with instructions for Stephanie to keep an eye on another Ramos son, Hannibal. Add to that one homicidal maniac, a couple more dead bodies, Stephanie's usual bad car karma, and the zit from hell, and you've got yourself one fine Stephanie Plum adventure. Will Stephanie triumph? You can bet a jelly doughnut on it. And there's another great cliffhanger waiting at the end. --Barrie Trinkle

Book Description

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is faced with her most daunting task yet: bring in the mysterious former Special Forces agent Carlos Manoso (aka Ranger). He's the man who taught her everything about fugitive apprehension, and Stephanie knows she will be testing her skills against the master. But even if she does catch him, she's not so sure she could turn in her friend-even if he is wanted for murder....And if this isn't enough to keep her up at night, Grandma Mazur is crimping her sex life by moving in with her and keeping her from getting any action from her cop boyfriend, Joe Morelli. Now, with her love life messing with her head, two threatening goons on her tail, and three corpses-so far-it's getting a little too hot for Stephanie whose search for Ranger is bringing her dangerously close to the wrong side of the law....AUTHORBIO: Bestselling author JANET EVANOVICH is the recipient of the Crime Writers Association's John Creasey Memorial, Last Laugh, and Silver Dagger awards, as well as the Left Coast Crime's Lefty award, and is the two-time recipient of the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association's Dilys award. She lives in New Hampshire, where she is at work on her next Stephanie Plum adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Stephanie Plum series.......2007-09-02

I love the Stephanie Plum series of novels. I really hate reading so I purchase them both in audio for me and paperback for houseguests and friends. I'm drawn in with the excitment and adventure of the story that Janet seems to capture in every novel. It has twists, turns, Lula, mystery, wonder, and of course two very "HOT" men! Who wouldn't want a mix of both men. :} I would recommend the "Plum" series, her "Full" series, as well as her earlier novels of mixed titles. They're all great fun and keep you as a reader at the edge of your seat waiting to see if a cars going to get blown up, who's died this week, who attends the pot roast dinner, who she sleeps with next, what will burn down next, and will she get her man (love or bounty). I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I look forward to #14 in the "Plum" series, the next "Full" novel, and the new novel Janet recently wrote with a new author being released this October. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars HOT SIX.......2007-06-01

This is the sixth part in the Stephanie Plum series. None of these short, easy reads should be taken seriously, and if you are looking for a book to build brain cells, keep looking. You will enjoy this series more if you know what to expect out of the books and can read them for what they are: silly, fun, sexy, and full of giggles. All six, for me, have been light and funny, all six having the same flavor. But like eating six - not so good for you - yet, tasty potato chips, you tend to want another with a sense of mindless habitual consumption.

Andrea Flores has become one of the most valued agents of the Tenebrea, the elite fighting force of the star-spanning Alliance. Following the destruction of the Clone Welfare Institute run by the Cor Ordinate, Andrea is sent on a vital mission alongside her comrades, H'Roo Parh, a Jod; Tara Gullwing, a clone -- and Tara's lover, Eric, the clone of Andrea's dead husband.

But Andrea has not forgotten her true reason for joining the Tenebrea: to take revenge on those responsible for the death of her husband and children -- Cor terrorists who mistook her husband for Eric. Now alongside a constant reminder of what she has lost, Andrea faces her greatest challenge yet...

              5 out of 5 stars Tenebrea's Hope.......2007-05-28

Easy to read Sci-Fi book, great suspense. I really enjoyed reading this wonderful Sci-Fi creating. Roxann Dawson in Combination with Graham have made a great trilogy.I will definitely like to see more books from these authors. Just when there was no hope Andrea pulls Through and gives Hope to the next Book, Tenebrea's Rising.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-07-27

Tenebrea's Hope was awesome! Roxann Dawson and Daniel Graham have proved themselves extremely talented novelists, once again. I highly reccomend this book.

P.S. It's essential that you read Entering Tenebrea before you read this one.

3 out of 5 stars Hope for the Tenebrea is also Hope for Andrea.......2003-01-01

Tenebrea's Hope is a reward for readers who made it through Entering Tenebrea without giving up on the series. Book Two of the Tenebrea Trilogy is definitely better than its predecessor, despite an ending that's a wee bit trite and anticlimactic, and fails to deliver any major plot payoff.

The story picks up with Andrea Flores and renegade clone Tara in mid-flight away from the wreckage they generated on Cor. Blowing up the clone institute seemed the only way to buy time for mounting a full offensive against the Ordinate's NewGen clones, but it also blew Andrea's cover and K'Rin's plans for mobilizing the Jod Council in secrecy. Under ambitious Admiral Brulk, the Ordinate traces the saboteurs back to Jod and seizes the initiative. Accusing Jod of incitement to war, Cor gains a political weapon in lieu of the NewGen forces it lost.

Still too closed-minded to understand the real threat, Jod Council leader Pl'Don sees the Ordinate mess as an excellent opportunity to destroy his long-standing opponent K'Rin, along with the Tenebrea and the entire Rin clan. Expecting to take a Council seat as leader of any potential fight against Cor, K'Rin instead finds himself and most of his men taken by surprise and packed off to a prison planet. Worse, a traitor in K'Rin's ranks has told Pl'Don about the Tenebrea's use of the illegal Quazel protein; with no access to the necessary counteracting enzyme, the prisoners are doomed to a gruesome and lingering death.

Cooling her heels in a hidden outpost with fellow Tenebrea H'Roo and escaped clones Tara and Eric, Andrea is spared from Pl'Don's trap. She and her companions are now the Tenebrea's best hope. There's hope for her, too, as-almost against her will-she finds herself beginning to care again about the fates of those around her. Suddenly her life's mission of killing as many Ordinate as she can is sidelined by her need to spring K'Rin and the Tenebrea. She does return to Cor as she promised outlaw clone Brigon in Entering Tenebrea, but it's to recruit his assistance in the great escape rather than to fight the Ordinate. Meanwhile, Cor is preparing to sandbag Jod in pretty much the same way that Pl'Don took out K'Rin and most of his men-a nicely ironic touch.

The story lines in Tenebrea's Hope are much more scattered than in Entering Tenebrea. Where most of the action in the previous book was focused on either Andrea or K'Rin, those perspectives are joined here by alternating sections centering on Pl'Don, Brigon, Brulk, and a number of other minor characters as well. The increased plot complexity helps to conceal the believability issues that still crop up from time to time, but the transitions are choppy and continuity sometimes suffers. As in the first book, the characters and situations are absorbing enough to ensure that most readers will be back to see how all those cliffhangers are resolved in the final installment of the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars This story just keeps getting better!.......2002-03-12

This second book of the Tenebrea trilogy was even more engaging than the first. I was drawn in from the very first paragraph, and the story held my interest all the way to the last line. And, as only a good book can, it left me wanting more. I cannot wait to get my hands on the third book, Tenebrea Rising.

This story is so incredible that I was so caught up in it, I actually forgot where I was a couple of times. I was sad I reached the end of the book, and desperately wanted to climb back into Andrea Flores' world.

It's beautifully written. The characters are multi-dimensional and endearing, the imagery evokes pictures in the mind that are fascinating, and the story has so many twists and turns it keeps the reader on his/her toes. Roxann Dawson and Daniel Graham make a superb team. I thought Ms. Dawson was one of the most gifted Star Trek actors ever, and her talents continue to deliver.

5 out of 5 stars TENEBREA TRILOGY ROCKS!.......2001-11-26

Roxann Dawson and Daniel Graham make a powerful and exciting writing team. They each bring to this trilogy their own unique blend of talent and creativity.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading both "Entering Tenebrea" and "Tenebrea's Hope".
Captivating, edge of your seat suspense and a spectrum of emotions was felt, as I became a sideline character cheering on Andrea Flores in her quest.

I wait with bated breath to read the third book in this tantalizing trilogy, "Tenebrea Rising". I look forward to seeing Roxann Dawson and Daniel Graham at the NYC Convention where I will wait in line yet again to be the first to obtain a signed copy of the final book in this intoxicating trilogy.

Todd Wilbur has made a career out of his Top Secret Recipes series, dissecting popular recipes from America's favorite restaurant chains and presenting the results to eager home cooks. Top Secret Recipes: Sodas, Smoothies, Spirits, and Shakes continues the theme, offering homemade approximation recipes to satisfy the craving and expectations of the thirsty reader looking for a brand-name fix. Wilbur presents a host of potables to create at home, including sodas such as 7-Up and A&W root beer, brand mixtures such as Orange Julius, and even signature adult drinks from a variety of restaurant chains including Chili's, Hard Rock Cafe, and Red Lobster. But Wilbur offers more than just the genetic code to these concoctions: he provides interesting anecdotes on the origin of the beverages as well as humorous, but necessary, warnings about the various alcohol-infused drinks included. He's even dedicated a chapter to the home version of popular (and expensive) spirits such as Bailey's Irish Cream and Grand Marnier. I bought this book based on the fact that I LOVE all of the Top Secret Recipe books published and this one has to be in the top 3. Everything I've tried, my family and I have loved. One of my personal favorites is the [blended coffee drink]. However, the other drinks are just as good.

If you are a Top Secret Recipe fan, this is a must have or even if you are just looking for a new recipe book for beverages, try this one. I know you won't regret it. :)

3 out of 5 stars Fun Book. But..........2002-04-28

I saw this new book and got it mainly for the cool drink recipes that are in it. We tried several of them at home, but they did not quite taste like the drinks that we get at our local juice store. Maybe it's the ingrediants? Otherwise, the book was interesting.

              Book Description

The charming Chihuahua and the pugnacious pug. The graceful greyhound, the shaggy sheepdog, and the brazen bulldog. The miraculously mesmerizing mutt. These are not the dogs that are typically celebrated in dog books—those focus on the most popular purebreds: Labrador retrievers, Jack Russells, German shepherds Dalmatians. But where are the other breeds? And where are the non-breeds that make up more than half of the U.S. dog population, the mutts? Where is their book?

If Americans love anything, it’s the underdog—every kind of underdog, whether it’s a dog or not. We recognize that beauty is more than skin deep—or fur deep. We appreciate dogs of indeterminate lineage, with mottled fur, too-large ears, or strange little bodies; we love dogs who look like impish little children or grumpy old men. Underdogs is their book—a celebration of funny faces and singular shapes, of uncommon breeds and unrecognized mixed-breeds. Underdogs is a charming, touching, and occasionally hilarious look at what we really love about dogs—the true companionship that comes from great character.

I found this book in a little store in a vacation spot. I thought is was the cutest, most unusal selection of dogs and sayings I've ever seen. It's the kind of book that just lifts your spirits and makes you feel good all over. A wonderful gift for any dog lover in your life. Wonderful photos and inspirational dialogue. You just want to keep picking it up and perusing the contents. Fun book!

This delightful tome features some of the (forgive me) homeliest, funniest, sweetest-looking dogs I've seen in one place. Beautifully photographed dog portraits are paired with quotes by the famous and infamous that become witty in this context if they weren't already. This book is a great tool for meditation: every time I pick it up, I find myself contemplating a photo and a quote with a smile on my face. The cover alone is worth the price of the book, just for the happy-love endorphins it releases in me every time I look at it. (The thumbnail reproduction here on the website doesn't do it justice.)

5 out of 5 stars A Work of Art with a Sense of Humor.......2002-03-02

Jim Dratfield is at it again with a great collection of character capturing photographs. Fans of Pug Shots and the Quotable Canine & Quotable Feline should be sure to add Underdogs to their collections. The photographs are perfectly matched to witty quotes and my only complaint is that it ended too soon. I gaurantee that this book will be found on the shelf of every dog lover (especially those of us who prefer the less popular breeds and the mutts of the world). Good work Jim!

                Book Description

Jon Maguire's book Silver Wings, Pinks & Greens was a tremendous success and set a new standard for American uniform and insignia references. Following its publication there still remained among collectors and historians a desire for more information. There was also an outpouring from many serious collectors who made available a wealth of items-the result, More Silver Wings, Pinks & Greens. This book of all new material greatly expands on the wing qualification bagdes, uniforms, and patches presented in the first book. Additionally, this work covers totally new areas including Civil Air Patrol, W.A.S.P.s, Air Transport Command, Factory Techincal Representatives, and "Yanks" in the RAF an RCAF. Other new areas presented are uniforms and insignia of the First World War era, and the "Golden Age" of the 1920s-1930s. There is also a large section on Aviation Cadets and civilian contract flying schools and instructors. The book is presented in the detailed and thorough style typical of Jon Maguire's work. Original items are shown in over 1000 color photographs, as well as numerous unpublished period photographs showing the items as they were worn. Jon Maguire is also the author of Gear Up! Flight Clothing & Equipment of USAAF Airmen in World War II, American Flight Jackets, Airmen & Aircraft, and Art of the Flight Jacket(all available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).

                , over 1,100 color and b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"

5 out of 5 stars Another Maguire Benchmark.......2003-03-10

It seems to date that the author Jon A. Maguire can do no wrong whenever he decides to commit pen to paper. Yet again we have a title that is truly exhaustive in it's coverage of the topic without becoming staid and condescending. Each page is full of highly detailed photographs that describe and illustrate the items perfectly for the collector. His text is articulate, informative and detailed.

If the American Army Air Forces from the period covered are of interest to you then I can offer you know more words of advice other than buy this book. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Another Maguire Masterpiece.......2000-01-31

It really is something of a rare event these days when someone writes a scholarly reference work that rapidly becomes a benchmark for others to aspire to, but Jon Maguire just keeps on doing it.

Keep em coming, keep em flying!

5 out of 5 stars Great follow up to his first book, Silver Wings..........1998-07-02

This is an extension of the authors first book, Silver Wings, Pinks and Greens. The section on pilot and aircrew wings is once again outstanding. Any serious collector of WWII wings and insignia must add this book to their library. Highly recommended!!

This is an interesting book. The amount of text within the book is minimal and wonderfully reproduced pictures of Web sites are presented beautifully. The paper is of high quality, as is the print, and this book is a joy to handle.

Some of the sites shown within are a bit 'over the top', but I think that's exactly what this book is about.. Some of the sites are minimalist too, which provides a good balance.

Order this book ... and please don't be put off by its pallid subtitle, A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, which doesn't begin to do justice to the utterly unique and moving story contained within. The Color of Water tells the remarkable story of Ruth McBride Jordan, the two good men she married, and the 12 good children she raised. Jordan, born Rachel Shilsky, a Polish Jew, immigrated to America soon after birth; as an adult she moved to New York City, leaving her family and faith behind in Virginia. Jordan met and married a black man, making her isolation even more profound. The book is a success story, a testament to one woman's true heart, solid values, and indomitable will. Ruth Jordan battled not only racism but also poverty to raise her children and, despite being sorely tested, never wavered. In telling her story--along with her son's--The Color of Water addresses racial identity with compassion, insight, and realism. It is, in a word, inspiring, and you will finish it with unalloyed admiration for a flawed but remarkable individual. And, perhaps, a little more faith in us all.

A powerful portrait of growing up, a meditation on race and identity and a poignant, beautifully crafted hymn from a son to his mother.

The Color of Water chronicles the childhood of James McBride, an inter-racial kid born of a Jewish mother and a Black father. The book describes James' mom's philosophy of raising her kids as "colorless," with undeniably good principles such as education, respect, and family unity. James is one of the youngest of many kids, and thus is relegated to menial chores and destined to ignorance in his early years, because his mother refuses to answer any of his questions.

At first, the book is actually quite interesting as you learn of the fiber of the Jordan/McBride family. The older kids are generally more rebellious and usually argue with each other about race and politics. The younger kids look up at the older kids but they reserve their ultimate respect and admiration for mommy. As the book progresses, however, the story gets extremely redundant and stereo-typical as other reviewers have mentioned. Apparently, mommy failed to instill the notion that skin color doesn't matter to their kids as they each begin to turn to racial groups and rebel against the "white man."

This book can be a page turner if you focus on only reading the book for the sake of it's story. If you attempt to read this book to gain knowledge on how to raise your kids or any other ultimate motive, I am sad to report that you will likely be dissapointed, as was I.

If you like reinforcing stereotypes, then James McBride's book is for you. Jews have big noses, they only care about money, and of course, his converted mother only finds love through Jesus. But let's move past that. A great mother? Perhaps her children would not have had to eat sugar as a meal or wake up at 3 am (when she came home from work with free food from her employer) to eat-- else they went hungry if she had the number of children that she and her could support. Perhaps living in a house where the dog's feces is kicked under the radiator is not an indication of a strong mother. How about when she pays one fare for the subway and puts herself and the twelve children through on that one fare. These are not virtues. The writing was weak; the message was weaker.

Legal History of the Color Line: The Rise And Triumph of the One-drop Rule

A better title for this book would be: A Dark Mulatto's Tribute to His Jewish Mother. The word "black" denies the European Jewish ancestry of the author and his siblings and the word "white" denies his mother's ethnic heritage. Mrs. McBride's Jewish ethnic values were far more important to her children's success than being "white."

"Times were different then." Something espoused by the author's mother -- a Polish Jew who grew up in the Jim Crow south before World War II, and then raced away from her self-described purgatory to New York -- where she embraced mixed union, poverty and Jesus Christ.

How people of mixed races could live without constant clamour and request for surrender is not known to the 21st century people -- I grew up with bussing and other issues, but never saw a segregated movie theater, water fountain, or seating area. We really don't know how far we have come. And, we don't know how hard the struggle of others has been.

And, to help us understand that path, we have James McBride's autobiography/biography -- in pica print is his tale and in italic (every other chapter) is his mother's biography written by her son or her autobiography as transcribed from her taped sittings with her son.

Some things which she lived with will astound you -- I refer not to the biracial issues, but to the classic violations of Judeo-Christian ethics by the author's grandfather. As a rabbi and devout conservative Jew, the author's grandfather, we learn, abused his spouse emotionally (if not physically), abused his daughter sexually, and abused the black man in the south for personal financial gain. Interestingly, all had the same achilles heel -- each was a weakened victim. The wife a victim of polio and contract marriage, the daughter a victim of youth, and the black people victims of unadulterated 1930's racism.

Emerging from this broiling escapade by the father came the flight of a young woman to New York (the author's mother) who raised 12 bi-racial children whose faces and hair told most strangers they were anything other than children of a conservative Jew who emigrated from Poland.

In the even-numbered paragraphs (those autobiographical passages of the author), I had laugh-out-loud episodes when he recited events of his naive youth when he asked questions about his race, about his mother's race and more. Like Frank McCourt, he delivers the lines in such accurate manner that you feel as though you are sitting back and watching kids in action doing their thing which we, as adults, can not well remember nor well imitate.

This was solid fun reading based upon an extremely unique factual content.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing..........2007-07-18

I was very disappointed with this book, especially given so many positive reviews. Though I certainly admired McBride and his siblings' ability to achieve so much given so little, I was appalled and even morally offended by the sheer stupidity and negligence of his mother as she is described (apparently in her own words) throughout the book.

I think we the readers are so overwhelmed with empathy and admiration for 12 children rising out of poverty despite obstacles of racism, poor education, no support from extended family, etc., that we forget to ask the obvious question: why would any person raise 12 children in poverty in the first place?? How is this a good decision? A mother has no job and no discernable skills, and is married to what seems like a great man - wouldn't she think after the 4th kid that "maybe I should make sure I can provide for my first 4 children before I have a 5th..or a 12th?"! To me, this is morally reprehensible! And if that's not enough, the book is littered with negligent decision making while raising her 12 kids. For example, when she drives a car without a license, she seriously risks jail time (and bankrupcy/legal problems if she hits something/someone). What would happen to her kids then? I guarantee if this same woman with no license and 12 children ran into your car, you'd be thinking much different thoughts, the nicest being "what a complete moron"! She obviously must have been a good, strong, moral woman, but she was also lucky. For every 12 child family success story, there are probably 100 other abject failures.

If I went into the woods with no water and no food and no sense of direction, and I made it out alive after 10 days of on-the-verge-of-death adventure, you might be inspired by the luck/perseverence/moral fortitude...or you might just think "why did that moron go into the woods with no water, food, or sense of direction"? That's the way I felt about this book.
