Book Description

The ninth Repairman Jack novel begins with a tragedy that throws Jack together with his brother Tom, a judge from Philadelphia. They've never been close and Jack, the career criminal, soon finds that he adheres to a higher ethical standard than his brother the judge. Determined to get to know his brother better, Tom convinces Jack to go on a wild treasure hunt together. Armed only with a map pointing the way to a desolate wreck off the coast of Bermuda, the brothers come across something much stranger, and much more dangerous than mere treasure.

4 out of 5 stars Infernal is Eternally Solid Storytelling!.......2007-07-20

F. Paul Wilson's fantastic 9th Repairman Jack novel is yet another breath of fresh air in sheer storytelling. This series has it all, from terrific characterizations to elements of sci-fi. horror, and fantasy, all rolled up to make this a urban merc fiction series that is second to none.

It is no wonder such literary giants such as Stephen King and Dean Koontz are even huge fans. Wilson is a dynamo in this field. There hasn't been a bad Repairman Jack novel yet. Even Infernal, with its lack of major action and adventure that I normally crave, makes little difference when the story and characters themselves make the reader easily immerse themselves into the fantastic plotline and newcomer characters.

Such as Jack's brother, Tom. This latest entry character to the series is very believable - like always - and he is the exact opposite of his urban merc brother, Jack. The storyline goes from New York to the Bermuda Triangle, and has various elements that keep the reader intrigued until the very last word in the novel. Twists and turns abound with the new threat of Jack's brother, Tom from getting Jack exposed, to an alien 'thing' long lost for centuries that Jack and Tom bring up from the ocean's depths, and even post 9/11 terrorists that do more damage to Jack's family from the get-go.

All these elements mesh so well together, and so seamlessly, that create yet another top-notch reading experience for tons of readers. My husband and I are newlyweds to this awesome series, and we can't wait to sink our teeth into the next novel, Harbingers, when it comes out in paperback next month.

So, for this novel Infernal, we give 5 stars for overall storyline, but 4 stars because there wasn't enough action and adventure like in past novels. Can't wait until this Otherness and the Adversary finally meet.

3 out of 5 stars Oddball outing for Jack.......2007-06-19

This here is the 9th Repairman Jack, after Gateways and Crisscross. I'm a big fan of this series, and I enjoyed reading this one, but it's not one of the best of the series. I've loved all of Jack's adventures, tho I'd rank this one with Legacies as the 2 weakest of the series. Don't start reading here. Start with The Tomb.

4 out of 5 stars Something New.......2007-06-03

I've read several less-than-rave reviews of this installment of the Repairman Jack series. Honestly, I can't understand why any Jack fan would consider this a second rate effort. I've read all the RJ novels, and I found Infernal to be one of the more satisfying.

The change of pace was refreshing. Not only does Wilson make the best use ever of various characters' perspectives, but he does a great job of contrasting Jack's unconventional but strong moral sense with that of his neer-do-well but successful brother.

3 out of 5 stars This one took forever for me to finally finish!.......2007-05-10

Like a lot of the other readers here, I first became acquainted with F. Paul Wilson back during the mid-eighties when he first wrote The Keep and The Tomb. Once he started with the "Repairman Jack" series in earnest several years ago, I devoured each new novel like a pit bull with a bag of Vanilla wafers. I've have become an avid supporter of Repairman Jack, giving all of the books--up until Infernal--either a four-star or five-star rating. I've also been overly anxious for the Repairman Jack movie to finally come out with Viggo Mortensen playing the title role. Unfortunately, I've just found out that the Mortensen film is now a thing of the past and that new plans are underway to bring Repairman Jack to the big screen.

With regards to Infernal, I hate to admit it, but I was bored just about all the way through this rather thick novel. There wasn't the usual amount of action that readers of this series have come to expect. The book starts off great with Jack's father being murdered in an airport massacre by Moslem fanatics. I initially thought that Jack would go on a killing rampage to avenge his father's death. No such luck. Instead, Jack's brother, Tom, shows up to claim their father's body (remember Jack has no legal identity and lives underneath society's radar) and to induce Jack to help him recover some money that's hidden a Bermuda bank account. Jack's brother is the type of blowhard that everyone loves to hate. This man has few redeeming qualities about him and almost immediately starts off by hitting on Gia in front of his brother. Anyway, the two brothers borrow an ocean-going speedboat and make their way to Bermuda, only to discover that the U.S. authorities are one step ahead of Tom, who's likely to soon end up in jail. Unable to get to his hidden funds, Tom decides to salvage the whole trip by locating a sunken Spanish ship with the aid of a secret map and finding the prized possession that was the ship's only cargo before being deliberately sunk. Against Jack's better judgment, he helps his brother to find the ancient artifact. Jack's instincts tell him to leave damn thing at the bottom of the sea, but Tom's determined to bring the artifact back to the States and hopefully to make some money off of it. The artifact, however, is dangerous to those unaware of its power. Before long the people closest to Jack's heart will find themselves at the mercy of the artifact, with Jack struggling to find a way to save them. Along with that, an acquaintance of Jack's discovers the identity of the men who massacre the people at the airport. If nothing else, Repairman Jack will want to extract revenge on those who killed his father.

Except for the airport massacre at the beginning of the novel, not a lot really happens till almost two-hundred-and-seventy-five pages into the book. That's when Jack and his brother find the ancient artifact off the coast of Bermuda. Things slow down again until the artifact affects the health of Gia (Jack's fiancé) and her daughter, Vicky, and Jack has to quickly search for a remedy. Even then, any long-time reader of the series will be able to guess what's going to happen. I already had a copy of Harbingers (the next Repairman Jack novel) to read, so I knew that Jack and his family didn't die in Infernal. It was an easy step in guessing who does. The confrontation where Jack and his friend, Joey, take on the Arab killers didn't quite ring true to me. It seemed tacked on in order to wrap up the incident at the beginning of the book. In fact, I guess you could say that the whole book didn't ring true. I usually read a Repairman Jack novel pretty fast, but this one took me almost two weeks to finish. Though Mr. Wilson's writing is excellent, the story line was boring to me. I had little interest in what was happening. I think a lot of other readers felt the same way. I'm hoping Harbingers will be a more exciting book than this one was. Like me, I suspect the fans of Repairman Jack will be forced to read Infernal just to keep abreast of the series. My advice is not to be too disappointed if the book doesn't live up to your expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Creepy.......2007-04-14

I love stories involving creepy/mystical books, devices, machines, etc. The Lilitongue is a REALLY creepy invention -- my only gripe is I wish Wilson had of gone into more detail about the other Infernal devices. Maybe in the future......?

5 out of 5 stars Romance and adventure in space.......2006-01-01

Cassie Gordon, on her way to Treaine to take a job as an apprentice engineer, has the bad luck to be on a spaceship that is captured by pirates. The men are all killed, and the women are kidnapped to work as slaves in the illegal drug trade - except for Cassie, who is put on the flesh auction block, to be purchased and used by the highest bidder. This is where Sebastian Asteril, disgraced former officer in the Seventh Fleet of Mariltar and now a trader of questionable ethics, found her and bought her. By the time they arrive at their destination, Sebastian and Cassie have developed a bond - but will it survive Cassie's psychological trauma from the pirate attack and Sebastian's lies?

This full-length novel has a very ambitious plot of broad scope containing a controversial topic (drugs and drug-dealing), as well as a love story that spans time and distance. The plot moves along at a fast clip, and the author manages to keep surprises coming until the very end. Clarke definitely knows her science fiction, ably blending a believable science fiction story with an emotional romance. In my opinion, StarJumper's Bride is a superior addition to the genre of futuristic romance, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I liked the character of Sebastian a lot - he was brash and sexy, and came across as a very independent guy. I was less fond of Cassie's character because at first she seemed timid and passive in many ways - not really a match for Sebastian -- although her character grew and developed as the story progressed. The love scenes are sensual and somewhat explicit, and demonstrate the hero and heroine's growing affection for each other. Readers should be warned that the story does contain some violence, which is used to move the plot forward. -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Futuristic Romance.......2005-06-11

Starjumper's Bride is the second book written by Ms. Clarke with the futuristic setting of the Crestar System. Moonfire, her best selling book on Fictionwise, is the first book to take us to the exotic future world Treaine, with its multiple moons and varied cultures. I couldn't wait to get back to the future with this newest romance.

Sebastian Asteril rescues Cassie Gordon from a flesh auction by purchasing her. He isn't sure why he did that, he'd seen many other women being sold before, but Cassie is different and he has no choice, he can't leave her. An outcast from Treaine, stripped of his rank as captain in the Mariltar Seventh Fleet, Sebastian is a trader of goods among the far flung worlds. He takes Cassie with him, but when danger threatens, he marries her and leaves her on Treaine. Unsure of her growing feelings for the scoundrel Sebastian, Cassie is excited and unsettled when he returns. He tells her he is allowed on Treaine for a brief time to trade, yet his actions remain suspicious and she begins to wonder if he is as he seems. Danger from her past threatens not only Cassie but the entire Crestar System and Sebastian is the only one who can save them all.

Ms. Clarke is a masterful writer who makes you care about her characters. I always know that I will find a fully developed new world to explore with two people I want to get to know quite well. Dashes of humor and intimacy spice up the book and make it impossible to put down. I stayed up much too late one night to finish it and was very satisfied with the ending. Her two characters fought hard for their ever after and I was pleased to be there with them.

Ms Clarke has published three books, Moonfire under the name Anne Clarke and Starjumper's Bride and Summer Heat, a contemporary romance, under the name J.A.Clarke. One of her short stories in a collection titled Northwest Tales of the Season. I would recommend all of them and am looking forward to reading her next book.

Book Description

There's a bar called "The Captain's Table," where those who have commanded mighty vessels of every shape and era can meet, relax, and share a friendly drink or two with others of their calling. Sometimes a brawl may break out but it's all in the family, more or less. Just remember, the first round of drinks is always paid for with a story...even on the planet Bajor.

Do the people of the Mist have the ultimate cloaking device -- or a gateway to another dimension? Captain Benjamin Sisko doesn't know for sure, but the Klingons™, the Cardassians, and the Ferengi Alliance will stop at nothing to obtain the device. Now Sisko finds himself in the middle of a deadly struggle that could change the balance of power throughout the entire Alpha Quadrant!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as Volume 2 but very true to the DS9 series...........2006-05-19

This one has Sisko dealing with the Mist and its mysterious culture. I think that it was a little slap dash but the characters still sounded like they have in the series. I went through half the book in one evening. It's a good addition to the six part series. I do have to agree with many of the reviewers that there are too many interruptions in the story. The back and forth from the bar to the tale is too intense.

3 out of 5 stars Good frame story........2004-10-08

As with the first two books of this miniseries, half of the book centers in "The Captain's Table", a mysterious place that seems to exist interdimensionally, can be entered only by captains, but captains of any stripe and from any place or time period; sort of a "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon", restricted to captains instead of people who Spider Robinson finds interesting. The other half of the book consists of a story told by our main character, in this case, Ben Sisko, about an adventure that he or she has had as a captain, told to the other captains at the bar.

As in the previous two books, both stories are very well told, and are quite enjoyable. The problem, and the reason I only rate this book three stars, is that, while I find the basic concept amusing and interesting, I continue to have a problem with the fact that the Starfleet officers DON'T have a problem with the nature of the place; they cheerfully tell stories to rooms full of people whose cultures do not seem to have warp drive capability, or worse, seem to be from earth prior to the invention of warp drive, stories which center around spaceflight and alien cultures, without being the least concerned about the prime directive. Now, perhaps they don't always understand the nature of the place, or don't fully believe it; or perhaps they conclude that the fact that the people are here in the room interacting with other spaceflight cultures and aliens already means that any damage is already done, so nothing they might say can make it any worse. But it would be helpful if this mental process, whatever it may be, was made more clear. As it stands, I can't consider any of these stories canonical, which is a shame given how interesting and well-told they are.

5 out of 5 stars A great continuation on the series!.......2002-07-21

Of the six Captain's Table books I'd have to say this one comes in a close second to Peter David's "Once Burned." I say this because I feel that the character of Captain Sisko is one of the best character's in the Trek universe.
Although there are a few minor inconsistencies in the story, they are not too distracting. As it happens, a lot of the Trek books released have had them and I do my best to ignore them. Afterall, the books are not canon.
"The Mist" is an extremely well told story about a race that lives close to DS9 and are for all intents and purposes, cloaked or in another dimension that is only one step removed from the Federations. What a wonderful concept! In my opinion, the author's captured Captain Sisko's personality really well. The character interactions in the bar were particularly good. Sotugh is a well done Klingon. The Quilli besting a Klingon was really funny as well. Overall a great story and thank you very much to the author's for this one.

2 out of 5 stars It's Official, The Premise Stinks.......2002-06-03

It took three books for an author to finally capture the true atmosphere of a bar story. That Rusch and Smith accomplished it redounds to their credit. Too bad for them that the feat is about as exciting as watching grass grow.

The interaction at the bar is the best so far in the series. The story told by Sisko is the weakest. And the constant (sometimes two or three times on a single page) interruptions become infuriating at times. Sisko's story, by itself, would fill perhaps 75 pages; thanks to the bar dialogue, it gets dragged out over 240 pages.

There are only two things preventing me from giving this book one star. First, I don't believe it would be gentlemanly to punish Rusch and Smith for fleshing out a bad idea as well as it could be. Second, there is one great moment at the end of the book. As Sisko leaves the bar, he sees in the darkness a woman that looks like . . . . but, no, he concludes. It can't be. She was killed in the Badlands, lost with her starship, years ago . . . .

4 out of 5 stars A Fairly Enjoyable Read.......2001-09-22

Nothing spectacular to be found here, but it is an enjoyable read. A few glaring inconsistencies: The Bajoran Wormhole to the Delta Quadrant, Gul Dukat's appearance as a Cardassian military adversary (this book happens during his fight with the Klingons), and the inaccurate back cover (the only Ferengi in the book is Cadet Nog). But overall, it is an enjoyable read. The parts in the Captain's Table are enjoyable and funny, especially the frequent interruptions. The flashback is all right, and gets better as the book progresses. Overall, a good read if you have the time.

5 out of 5 stars Chinese Crested Owner.......2007-04-18

I currently have 4 Chinese Crested Hairless k-9's! They are a wonderful breed, yet I find myself informing my vet about the breed, isn't that what I pay her for? She knows very little about them. Without the internet there is not much where I am from about the breed. So I purchased this book along with several others to learn as much as I can and share with my vet! The book covers all the basic questions and answers that I have wondered and goolged about! I felt that it was very informative and verified what I already knew. I ordered it on a Friday and recived it the following Monday! Great seller!

4 out of 5 stars Good for starters.......2007-01-30

I bought this book years ago when I got interested in the breed and didn't really know anything. It's good for the beginner but if you have knowledge on the dog I wouldn't recommend it or any other book as most have basic information and you would probably know most of everything but maybe not so it will never hurt to try reading it! You might learn something new.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic info.......2005-01-16

I found this book to have very good basic information on Chinese Cresteds, however I was a little dissapointed, because I felt as though it could have gone into more detail in some areas. Overall however I'd say its a good book for someone looking at getting a CC.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased with this book.......2003-07-11

I was not sure what to expect from this book..and Was very pleasently surprised at what a great book this really is......lots of good info and not just for beginners....It touches on training, grooming, feeding, and just a lot of other things not to mention the wonders of this breed.Since im lucky enough to have on of these dogs and am new to this breed Im very glad I got this book along with one other....to do my research.....just a nice read....B.W.

2 out of 5 stars buy it for the pictures only..........2003-04-19

When I was looking into getting a chinese crested dog, I bought this book to get a basic idea as to what I would need to know when I owned one. That sort of information was not in abundance. If you're wanting to know more basic type info about the breed, know that pretty much everything I learned regarding that sort of basic info, I learned by surfing through various websites. I found that to be much more beneficial then reading this book. What the book IS good for is the pictures. It does give many of the different looks a chinese crested can have. And it doesn't just show the show dogs. It shows pretty ones, and ugly ones, old ones, and young ones--all with every level of hairyness, and color. I would encourage anyone who'd buying it not to spend more than $... bucks on it.

        Book Description

This volume contains 28 essays in honor of Abraham J. Malherbe, whose work has been especially influential in exploring modes of cultural interaction between early Jews and Christians and their Graeco-Roman neighbours. Following an introductory essay on the problems inherent to such comparative studies in the history of New Testament scholarship, the essays are grouped into five topic areas: Graphos — semantics and writing, Ethos — ethics and moral characterization, Logos — rhetoric and literary expression, Ethnos — self-definition and acculturation, and Nomos — law and normative values. Some key examples are studies dealing with The Greek Idea of "Divine Nature" and its relation to the "Divine Man" tradition; Compilation of Letters in Cicero's collection; Radical Altruism in Paul; Greek Ideas of Concord and Cosmic Harmony in 1 Clement; The Rhetorical Use of Friendship Motifs in Galatians in comparison with Second Sophistic Orators; Wills and Testaments in Graeco-Roman perspective.

          Book Description

This catalogue brings together for the first time 81 of Robert Morris's Blind Time Drawings, selected from the six series that make up the corpus of this work to which Morris has dedicated more than 30 years. The entire range is present from the early drawings of 1973 up to the Moral Drawings of 2000, with a particular emphasis on the fourth series, a group of works inspired by the writings of the philosopher Donald Davidson. Visually striking, the Blind Time Drawings, as the name implies, were executed by the artist with his eyes covered. Consisting of stark black-and-white contrasts, explosions of graphite, and obsessive markings that move organically throughout the page, the works are anything but haphazard. Morris followed a strict plan when doing the works, and his writing, which describes his process, is instrumental to understanding them. In addition, these works are placed within the context of Morris's Minimalist and Conceptualist masterpieces such as Card File (1962), Mirrored Cubes (1965), and Portland Mirrors (1977).

                            Book Description

Boston Boy is Nat Hentoff's memoir of growing up in the Roxbury section of Boston in the 1930s and 1940s. He grapples with Judaism and anti-Semitism. He develops a passion for outspoken journalism and First Amendment freedom of speech. And he discovers his love of jazz music as he follows, and is befriended by, the great jazz musicians of the day, including Duke Ellington and Lester Young among others.

"This memoir of [Hentoff's] youth should be appreciated not only by adults who grew up through the fires of their own youthful rebellion, but by those restless young people who are now bringing their own views and questions to the world they are inheriting. They could learn from this example that rebels can be gentle as well as enraged and compassionate in their commitment." -- New York Times Book Review

"Nat Hentoff knows jazz. And it comes alive in this wonderful, touching memoir." -- Ken Burns, creator of the PBS series Jazz

"[A] charmingly bittersweet memoir." -- The Boston Globe

"This is a touching book about a painful, wonderful time in Boston…I loved it." -- Anthony Lewis

                            Customer Reviews:

                            5 out of 5 stars A terrific, short read.......2002-12-01

Nat Hentoff, who later became famous as a writer about jazz and civil liberties, describes his "coming of age" and discovery of jazz in the Boston of the 1940s. A very enjoyable read.
