    Book Description

Orphaned and alone, young Juan Caraveo flees from his cruel master in the lowlands of central Mexico to seek his missing father in the fabled mountains of the west. Fear and necessity drive him into the service of thieves and adventurers, wise men and holy men - all characters who emerge, bigger than life, from the rugged and varied Mexican landscape to guide or confound his quest. A mythic tale, set in the early years of the twentieth century, Juan Caraveo recounts the often outrageous and always gripping adventures of a peasant youth who, through his wits and determination and the influence of his many masters, reaches a fearless and honest manhood despite the origins of his humble origins.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Occult Detective Stories.......2006-01-14

If you're a fan of Seabury Quinn and his master criminologist/occult expert Jules de Grandin, you'll appreciate this collection. Lin Carter was quite open that this was intended to be an homage to de Grandin (as well as Howard's Steve Harrison and Rohmer's Neyland Smith), but Carter's stories stand alone very well. The stories by other authors are interesting, but the love for (and knowledge of) this sub-genre shines through in Carter's two offerings.

The reviewer who found no Cthulhu Mythos in these stories was mistaken. Every single story makes reference to things Lovecraftian.

    1 out of 5 stars Where's the Mythos?.......2003-06-18

For fans of Lovecraft? From what I've seen this has nothing to do with the Cthulhu Mythos. No Cthulhu, R'Lyeh, Nyarlathotep. I don't think you should have "psychic gumshoe" in horror stories. It sounds like something from the kid's section. If you want Mythos buy Lovecraft.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection!!.......2003-04-05

This is a great collection of stories. Recommended for not only fans of Carter and Lovecraft, But for people who want some good old fun action packed horror/adventure stories. I highly recommend this!!

5 out of 5 stars NEW TWISTS ON OLD FAVORITE.......2003-02-09

Robert Price is a genius editor. Rather than having his eight writers created new stories of the late Lin Carter's hero in the exact same mold as the originator, he let them run loose with the character. The results are 8 marvelous adventures, each giving us
new and different approaches to Anton Zarnak' from action, to horro and even some comedy mixed-in. More anthologies should be this
    fun.

The brutal struggle for power in post-nuclear America continues for the nine barons who rule the new world order. These emissaries of a long-lost race are facing extinction -- from within their own ranks, and from the rebel forces fighting to reclaim Earth and expose the horrifying truth of mankind's heritage.

    ATLANTIS RESURRECTED
Computer programs from the world before skydark are being salvaged and used to power the cities and villes of the twenty-second century. An enforcer turned renegade, Kane and his group learn of a mother lode of tech hidden deep within the ocean of the western territories, a place once known as Seattle. The booty is luring tech traders and gangs -- and an army of sec men prepared to do the barons' bidding. Kane and Grant dare to infiltrate the salvage operation, knowing that getting in is a life-and-death risk . . .

In the Outlands, the shocking truth is humanity's last hope.

3 out of 5 stars Oil and water.......2001-10-04

I don't know if this book was an experiment to combine Deathlands with Outlanders, but it mixed like oil and water. It just didn't work for me. I won't say it was terrible but it really wasnt an Outlanders adventure either. The book had some good points but I really didn't care of the scenes of child abuse in it. That kind of thing might work in Deathlands but it was really out of place in an Outlanders book.

I hope the next one is better.

    4 out of 5 stars OUTLANDERS TAKE A DIVE!.......2001-09-20

This new novel was written by a exciting author named Mel Odom, whom in my opinion, fits right in this universe better than he does his fantasy novels. He may make mistakes in some ways as far as consistancy, but he adds a new element in the characters that are refreshing and new - sometimes! But you know that Mark Ellis will return and make things alright again, so don't fret you diehard readers, just sit back and relax and feel lucky that a good and exciting writer is helping out once in a while. The only questions I have are - WHERE DID KANE COME UP WITH ALL OF THOSE CIGARS? And where did he store them all? Why did Brigid and Domi not seem to trust one another after all this time? Why can't Kane and Brigid just get along? Why doesn't Kane have sex with willing partners that don't come around everyday in that crazy world turned upside down? These are things that need to be addressed real soon in this series, this playing hard to get is getting redundant, in a world like that you would be worrying about things more substantial and make love every chance you could instead of playing mind games - wouldn't you?

    2 out of 5 stars Sargasso Blunder.......2001-09-07

Sargasso Plunder is more apt to be known as Sargasso Blunder.

Everything was off with the book.

Lets start with the redoubt exiles themselves. First, there never has been an exile named Collins. Ever. I have no idea where this unknown person came from. Secondly, what security teams? The only security that Cerberus has ever had have been Kane and Grant. Third, who was that un-known person in a white coverall that came to inform Lakesh in one scene?

Anyone who has read the series, for more than a couple of novels, know who the exiles are.

Now, about Domi. In this book, Domi wasn't Domi, she was Jak Lauren in drag. Throughout the novels, it has become quite clear that the only time she talks in a clipped manner, is during times of exceptional stress. It's not all the time. She was doing that throughout the entire book. Secondly, she doesn't carry a .357. That's Jak Lauren's weapon of choice.

Again, anyone who has read the series would know this.

Third, the characterization was totally off. Yes, the exiles disagree on a number of subjects, but the underlying FRIENDSHIP has always been there. In this book, everyone was suspicious of one another, especially between Domi and Brigid. That was just plain wrong. They're friends. Brigid would never wonder if Domi had ulterior motives in saving her.

While I'm on the topic of Brigid, she isn't Krysty Wroth from Deathlands. She's never expressed any interest in finding a better life and eventually leaving the redoubt, the way that she threatened to do at the end of the novel.

Yes, the relationship between Brigid and Kane is strained, but not to the point where they're going to snipe at one another at her bedside.

    Now, for the novel itself.

First, It read like a Deathlands novel. The series has split so far away from Deathlands they can't be compared any more, and most of the readers don't want to see a Deathlands style novel written in Outlanders.

Secondly, at the end of Purgatory Road, Cobaltville was under attack from combined forces. There is no way that Cobalt would have the manpower to mount a hunt for a software trader. Hell the way the novel was going, I doubt that Cobalt is even in charge of Cobaltville any longer.

This novel was an exceptional letdown, especially after how well written Wreath of Fire was.

For the rating, if this was a Deathlands novel, it would have been clearly a five out of five. But Outlanders is NOT Deathlands, and it's clear that all ties to the series are being cut with each novel that comes out. So it deserves the rating I am giving it

    1 out of 5 stars A dumbed-down disappointment.......2001-08-22

It's been awhile since I reviewed an Outlanders novel...I guess I got to the point that since the quality was usually so high I expected it to go on forever. Sargasso Plunder is a real wake-up call.

This book should have been subtitled "Outlanders For Dummies". Everything in it was dumbed-down, all the characters seemed like their IQs had dropped several points since the last book and the story was about as emotionally and intellectually engaging as a kid's cartoon. There's no continuity to speak of between the previous book and this one, so all the loose ends left dangling at th end of the Imperator Wars trilogy are still dangling. That was bad enough but I might have overlooked it if this book hadn't obviously been written like a Deathlands novel. The only thing I liked about this book was the cover.

Hey, Gold Eagle--I've been a fan of this series for years but that doesn't mean I'll buy anything with the Outlanders name on it, no matter how bad. If the regular author has left the series and if Sargasso Plunder is an example of what future Outlanders books will be like, then I'm taking my business elsewhere. If the days of such great epic adventures like Parallax Red, Savage Sun, Hell Rising and Tigers of Heaven are gone, then I will be too.

Shame on everyone involved in pushing this book on the fans of the Outlanders series.

      3 out of 5 stars A Good Start.......2006-08-15

After loving her later cookbook, Saving Dinner, I hoped this cookbook would be more of the same. However, I was disappointed. There are some good recipes, but this book contains fewer main dishes. The number of people the recipes serve vary, which means there is more adjusting. Delicious, nutritious meals are still Leanne Ely's specialty.

4 out of 5 stars From Stir Fry to Pasta Pie.......2006-04-12

The Frantic Family Cookbook is an enjoyable escape into meals you can create in minutes instead of hours. There are no complicated instructions and the ingredients are readily available at your local grocery store.

The author is a food columnist and writes for E-Diets. She is a nutritionist and former caterer who loves cooking and enjoys creating healthy recipes that are delicious and nutritious. She also loves to save money, so the recipes in this book won't break your budget. She gives advice on how to save money and shares her tips and tricks for saving when buying ingredients for the recipes in this book. There are tips on stocking the pantry and a glossary of cooking terms.

Throughout the recipes, Leanne Ely's witty comments bring a smile and her creative writing style makes the recipes easy to read. Comfort recipes like Cottage Pie use ingredients like mushrooms, beef, onions, garlic and carrots. Worcestershire sauce is also a favorite in this cookbook and also gives flavor to Mini-Meaty Loaves.

The ideas about "Clean out the Crisper Vegetable Soup" have served me well. I use a rotisserie chicken and make a chicken stock with vegetables and then after straining the stock, make a soup. You can't imagine how many ways you can make a chicken soup once you dive into such adventures. This cookbook also gives you ideas for your own culinary discoveries.

      Other delicious recipes include:

      Fragrant Lemon Chicken and Potatoes
      Turkey Tetrazzini
      WAY Easy Chicken Stir Fry
      Quick Orange Ginger Chicken
      Curried Lentil Soup
      Barbecue-in-a-Pot Beef
      Baked Fish
      Four-Cheese Vegetable Lasagna
      Peach Melba
      Very Berry-Lemon Pudding Cake

Yes, this cookbook even has the recipes for Chicken with 40 cloves of Garlic! The recipe for the Lemon Chicken with garlic reminds me of my childhood.

As a bonus there is a section of "Masterful Mixes" to save more money. You can make your own Oatmeal Pancake Mix, Mexican Seasoning and Italian Seasoning.

The Frantic Family Cookbook is a wonderful mosaic of recipes and cooking knowledge that will benefit many families who want to save time and money all while having fun cooking up delicious meals. You may also enjoy reading the taste-testers comments which are cute and add a playful element to the well-organized pages.

      ~The Rebecca Review

P.S. Yes, there does seem to be a problem with the Double Cheeseburger Pie recipe, but you can still make it without the extra ingredients not listed in the instructions. Strange misprint. That is the only mistake I see so far and hopefully they have fixed it in additional printings.

3 out of 5 stars Has several misprints.......2005-12-06

I like the way the recipes are healthy, from scratch, and introduce new vegetables, and for the most part are kid friendly. Almost all of the recipes are easy to make, and do not require a lot of fancy ingredients. HOWEVER, the reason for only 3 stars is several recipes have misprints! I've never seen a cookbook with misprints before. If you do decide to get this book, I would suggest reading through the entire recipe before attempting to cook it to be sure it is right. For a couple of examples: pg. 31, Double Cheeseburger Pie, it list the ingredients, but also lists the ingredients to a recipe two pages before it, the only reason I knew this is because I read the directions, and they said nothing about half of the ingredients that were in the recipe! Another example: pg. 76 Your Basic Beef Stew, in one part of the directions it tells you to transfer the beef to a crock pot, then they continue on for cooking in the dutch oven, and says nothing about a crock pot! It makes me nervous to try any of the other recipes.

2 out of 5 stars Frantic Family Cookbook - Not for the Frantic!.......2005-01-26

I guess I am the only person who finds this cookbook horrible. I ordered this book as a result of reading the reviews and the word "Frantic" in the title. I assumed that the meals would be quick, easy, and tasty, but I was wrong on all 3 counts.
I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 star because I've only made 3 of the recipes and assume that the rest are just as disappointing. A quick rundown of the recipes:
1)Cheap-o Cassoulet - Took a while to make as I had to thinly slice 4 carrots & 4 leeks, chop 2 onions, & 4 slices of bacon, press 4 garlic cloves, in addition to the 11 other ingredients. Result was bland and watery - my boyfriend preferred pasta and butter.
      2) Make Ahead Cheese & Hamburger Casserole: Took about 45 minutes to make and then had to be refrigerated for 1 day. The result was an average tasting hamburger helper. The real Hamburger Helper can be made in about 7 minutes and with ground turkey. The result would be quicker, tastier, and healthier. This dish has 20G of fat!!!
3)I'll spare you from the bland "Autumn Chix Breasts" which took at least 40 minutes to prepare with a bland result. I recommend any "shake and bake" coating or a home-made similar one. Try one of the Loony Spoons or Crazy Plates cookbooks instead. It will save your $ and time!!

4 out of 5 stars Recipes even your kids will love!.......2004-09-07

This book is chockfull of recipes that are quick and easy to make - plus even my picky 10 year old will eat them. The only reason I didn;t give it 5 stars is that I think it could have been printed a little nicer. The ink ran a little when I got one of the pages wet. So just be careful about those splats. Otherwise this is a great cookbook to add to your family's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Take the Next Step in Excelling at Agility!.......2004-03-06

4-Paws up for book 2 in the Excelling at Dog Agility "series" by Jane Simmons-Moake!

This extraordinary guide takes you from beginner to intermediate using easy-to-follow text loaded with pictures, diagrams, and tons of sample exercises. Get started with straight line and simple turn sequences then move at your own pace to distance control and "side-switches." Simmons-Moake is extremely thorough in her method and emphasizes not striving for "good" but for excellence! Her method makes it practically impossible to fail. Some of the important topics in this book are the introduction of distance and control commands, gaining distance with her "distance circles" technique, and how to give correct body cues for accurate performance every time. She also touches on the controversial concept of "correction-free training." To top off a wonderful "curriculum" of doggy schooling, she includes several pages of exercises you can do with just a few obstacles to drill key elements or your dog's weaknesses.

A few other features I really enjoyed:
        · LOTS of diagrams!
        · Tips for solving problems like broken start-line stays
        · Proofing ideas and exercises
        · An entire chapter on every type of side-switch imaginable! (including rear-cross, front-cross, counter rotations, zig-zags, and more!)

...and for those who are agility instructors or thinking of teaching agility, there are sample lesson plans for a 6-week Beginners class, 8-week Intermediate class, and 6-week Intermediate II class.

I cannot stop praising this book! It has certainly improved the performance of my own dogs and allowed me to progress more quickly with proven techniques. It is the perfect addition to any agility lover's bookshelf!

A book left over from the crafts era when everyone was into various fiber arts and there was a craft center to every town and village. Now with the dwindling craft centers and fairs, we are in the age of kilts and even paint by numbers has disappeared.

You can keep the skills alive until they are once more needed with this vary dated book of Needleweaving which seems like a combination of macram wall hangings, primitive tapestries, and quasi Indian art.

Most of the pictures are monochrome with a few color plates. The Jacket design is by Al J. Reagan. It is of several thread Mandalas over a desk.

                          Book Description

Sim Van der Ryn and Stuart Cowan present a vision of how the living world and the human world can be rejoined by taking ecology as the basis for design. Ecological design intelligence-effective adaptation to and integration with nature's processes-can be applied at all levels of scale, creating revolutionary forms of buildings, landscapes, cities, and technologies.

The authors weave together case studies, personal anecdotes, images, and theory to provide a thorough treatment of the concept of ecological design. In the process, they present and explain a series of design principles that can help build a sustainable world with increased efficiency, fewer toxics, less pollution, and healthier natural systems.

5 out of 5 stars Designs according to nature.......2007-02-23

Everyday sightings in nature can be the basis for the designs we "create." This is especially true in the field of architecture and I am enjoying the book.

5 out of 5 stars What is sustainable design?.......2004-02-09

A new benchmark in ecological awareness. Sym van der Ryn has long been practicing ecological design, and draws on his wealth of experience to give readers many valuable insights into this growing practice. Van der Ryn warns readers to separate the wheat from the chaff as there are many persons claiming to be toeing the line when it comes to sustainable design, but few are actually doing it. What is needed is a whole new approach to eco-friendly architecture and planning development, not just more band-aids.

The book takes a fairly general approach but there are numerous references for those really interested in pursuing the subject in more depth. He outlines his principles of ecological design which begins with gaining a better awareness of your locality, by looking into the ecological history of your community. Who knows your street may be where a stream once flowed, and that your storm drain in all likelihood flows into your water source, so be careful what you dump into it!

Van der Ryn avoids the cliches and pieces together a compelling set of anecdotes and observations which will open you up the broad field of possibilities. The book is well researched and written, with the valuable assistance of Stuart Cowan, a former student of van der Ryn. It is imperative that we gain a better appreciation of our natural environment before adding any more to our built environment. Sustainable design is our only future.

                          4 out of 5 stars Landscape Architect.......2000-07-06

This book is a good intro to the "why" of ecological design. It gives its informatiion in a non-technical way and explains the reasons we should approch design this way. I recommend it for all those involved with land and building design and development.

                            Book Description

Drafting a Conservation Blueprint lays out for the first time in book form a step-by-step planning process for conserving the biological diversity of entire regions. In an engaging and accessible style, the author explains how to develop a regional conservation plan and offers experience-based guidance that brings together relevant information from the fields of ecology, conservation biology, planning, and policy. Individual chapters outline and discuss the main steps of the planning process, including:

A concluding section offers advice on turning conservation plans into action, along with specific examples from around the world.

The book brings together a wide range of information about conservation planning that is grounded in both a strong scientific foundation and in the realities of implementation.

                              Book Description

Despite the fact that for most people the word architecture summons up images of weight and fixity, the experience and perception of architecture is dynamic over space and time, whether as a result of movement through space or as a result of changing environmental conditions. It is this dynamic quality of the built environment that stimulates our senses, yet is rarely anticipated or understood in the design process. This is in part due to an emphasis on the geometric and physical aspects of design - as represented in drawings or computer renderings.

Adaptability over time is a concerin in the life of building. In the short term the issue may be how the user can interact with the building. Longer-term issues include how the building can be adapted to respond to changes in conditions (e.g. working patterns, climate change, etc.). This calls for buildings that have a level of 'indeterminacy' in their design, without being excessively changeable - environmentally adaptable but not neutral.

This book brings together architectural research that clearly identifies why environmental variety is of significance how it relates to design.

                                      Book Description

Published to wide acclaim in 1974, Thomas E. Skidmore's intellectual history of Brazilian racial ideology has become a classic in the field. Available for the first time in paperback, this edition has been updated to include a new preface and bibliography that surveys recent scholarship in the field. Black into White is a broad-ranging study of what the leading Brazilian intellectuals thought and propounded about race relations between 1870 and 1930. In an effort to reconcile social realities with the doctrines of scientific racism, the Brazilian ideal of "whitening"—the theory that the Brazilian population was becoming whiter as race mixing continued—was used to justify the recruiting of European immigrants and to falsely claim that Brazil had harmoniously combined a multiracial society of Europeans, Africans, and indigenous peoples.

This book was one of the main sources of my MA research in the 80s and I am very happy to have an updated edition of this classic and still very relevant work.

                                        Book Description

In 1919, C. Burton and Hattie S. Cosgrove bought land in Grant Country, New Mexico, and began excavating ruins containing Classic Mimbres (ca. A.D. 1000-1150) ceramics. The self-trained archaeologists took great care in uncovering and recording their findings. They so impressed A.V. Kidder of the Peabody Museum when he visited the site he invited them to manage a museum expedition to the Swarts Ruin.

Long out of print, this classic volume is the Cosgrove's report of their Mimbres Valley Expedition seasons of 1924 to 1927. The excavation recorded nearly 10,000 artifacts, including an extraordinary assemblage of Mimbres ceramics. Hattie Cosgrove's meticulous line drawings of over 700 individual Swarts Ruin pots have long been an invaluable design catalog for contemporary Native American artists and serve as a rich resource for designers seeking Southwest inspiration in their work.

This clothbound facsimile edition of the original 1932 publication will be an essential to the libraries of all scholars, artists, and admirers of Native American art and archaeology.

5 out of 5 stars an American hero.......2007-03-21

A man of no pretense and extreme bravery who played a key role in the China- Burma- India theater of World War 2. He refused a chance to fly out of Japanese offensive action in order to lead- that is to say walk out of Northern Burma to India with responsibility for a polyglot group including Americans, British, a contingent of Burmese nurses, and a few others numbering about 100. He led his group across mountain ranges with inadequate supplies, staying ahead of the Japanese, marching his group at a standard (Army) pace of 105 steps a minute, fording rivers such as the Chindwin, one of 4 principal Burmese rivers which empties into the irrawaddy. This all at an age of 59 or thereabouts. He lost not a single life in this arduous slash through the jungle and mountains. He was a favorite of Gen George C Marshall and Sec'y of War Stimson. He was key in developing the means and methods for the Allied return starting in late 1944.

My review is inadequate to characterize this relatively unsung hero of WW2. Should you have further interest in this remarkable man's life I encourage you to read Barbara Tuchman's "Stillwell and the American Experience in China" and follow it with this book. Both are page turners, and instill pride and admiration for Stillwell as America's top General in the CBI theater.

5 out of 5 stars Health Care Models Revisited.......2000-02-01

Competing Solutions is an excellent review about real-world comparative international health care models of delivery and financing. Also, it is worth reading the chapter 7 on The Theory of Managed Competition because one can find clearly explained definitions and the core principles of this controversial theme. Joseph White shows that he is one of the main experts on this fascinating area of debate. One of his phrases: "If Americans must choose between narrower benefits for everybody and wider benefits for some, the choice is clear: cover everyone".(see page 274)
