4 out of 5 stars Fun for the 4th.......2007-07-10

In the latest installment of Hannah Swensen's life as the Cookie Jar's owner we find her in the middle of a murder mystery in the summer. Hannah not only has to stay afoat with all the 4th of July happenings, two very eligible men, and a murder involving her famous Lemon Meringue Pie, she also has to keep the Cookie Jar and her diet working. To get to the bottom of this one she has to do her usual snooping under the police radar(even though they know this time) and delve into the past to find the answers.

This is a great summer read and had it all: mystery, food, great laughs(from the Dolores, the mom) and great character development. I can't wait to dive into the next one: Fudge Cupcake Murder.

4 out of 5 stars great recipes.......2006-11-05

Cute, easy to read series with awesome recipes. Great reading for a cold winter night or a sunny sumer vacation.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST COZY MYSTERY SERIES YOU'LL EVER FIND.......2006-08-11

These mysteries are COZY and INTERESTING and GOOD!!! They are perfect!!! I could not ask for a better mystery!!! Not only is the setting and atmosphere cozy, but the clues, story line, and pacing are perfect! This author definitely has talent!!! The clues are perfectly and cleverly crafted and lead to the mystery solving. And the characters - you feel like you know them!!!

In this book, Hannah's mother finds a dead body. Hannah and Andrea solve the mystery.

Hannah cannot zip up her pants; therefore, she is on a diet for almost the entire book, even though her job is baking cookies and other weight-gaining foods.

I love the relationship of the three sisters: Hannah, Andrea, and Michelle. The mother's character is interesting, too.

An interesting piece of trivia from this book: if Michelle married one of her particular boyfriends, she would be "Michelle Swensen Jensen". Let's hope she doesn't marry that particular boyfriend!

1 out of 5 stars I concur with inPDX.......2006-08-05

This was the first Joanne Fluke novel I have read, which I grabbed on impulse. I became annoyed with Hannah, her sisters, her mother, and her boyfriends, almost immediately--why on earth would a police officer ever _encourage_ a civilian _baker_ to investigate a murder? Add the HIPPA violations, the author's lack of familiarity with criminal investigations, and the flip-flopping required to generate a villain, and you have a recipe for a refund request.

5 out of 5 stars Too Many Cookies Can Be Murder to Your Waistline!.......2006-07-25

Hannah Swensen returns in the 4th book in this series. In this installment, Hannah jumps in to help solve a murder when a lemon meringue pie from her bakery, The Cookie Jar, is found at the crime scene. When Norman Rhodes, one of Hannah's "boyfriends", purchases a home, he does not realize that the dead body of the previous owner will be found inside. It seems that this owner, Rhonda, stopped at her old home to pick up a few last items and thought she would have one last meal there. This meal was definitely her last, as the person that met her there may have been the last to see her alive! Adding to Hannah's troubles is the fact that some of her clothes just seem too tight, and so she sets out to put herself on a diet (even while she is baking all kinds of yummy cookies!). Playing a part in this mystery is Hannah's nagging mother, Norman's mother, and Mike, the policeman who usually fights to keep Hannah out of each case but finally gives up this time. As Hannah fights to keep her life in order and her weight in check, she must find a killer before he/she strikes again!

I have enjoyed each of the Hannah Swensen mysteries and have loved the recipes that are included in each book. Each time I have read one of the books, I find myself getting hungry (not good for my waistline either!) for all of the goodies that Hannah serves. The mysteries are interesting, but as I like culinary cozies, I enjoy the books more for the food and the characters. My only complaint about this series has to be in the dialogue between characters, as they are constantly repeating each other's names. Other than that, this delightful read will leave you "hungry" for more!

The first book in this series is "The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great ending to a great series of books!!.......2004-07-17

Brittain brings Daimbert and his story line to an excellent conclusion! I first picked up A Bad Spell In Yurt and have been hooked on the Daimbert books ever since. Have read each a number of times. They all have fairly intriguing plots that keep you guessing. This finale is no exception! Tightly written and well thought out. I have read that Brittain is working on Yurt the next generation, and I can't wait until it is here!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet!.......2004-04-14

A very strong conclusion to the Daimbert series - in some ways this is the best yet from this fine fantasy writer.

4 out of 5 stars Good but getting a little tired.......2001-11-20

Firstly it has a *dreadful* cover! Whatever were you thinking of, Mrs. B? The Baen ones conveyed the right atmosphere! General book manufacture is much better than the Baen ones, some of which fell apart as I read them.

The Yurt series is always readable. Daimbert and his friends (and enemies) are a cheerful lot, and their adventures are plotted without too much self-examination, which is very welcome. In this volume, Brittain reprises many of the locations from earlier books, as Daimbert travels around, finally wrapping up most of the loose ends from earlier series. Many characters make another appearance.

In Yurt-5 the series was showing signs of becoming tired - plot-material from earlier books was reworked, and although the result was readable enough, I felt doubts. The same problem affects this volume, but much more so. The final volume in many series tends to be a let-down, as the author simply ties up the knots. I fear the same has happened here, although it's quite readable. Various threads *have* been left open, and we can perhaps expect more books sometime.

Much as I would like to read more about Daimbert and Yurt, the author would be very well advised to give the series a rest. It's a pity that the Count Scar volume has not sold better, as I'd like a sequel to this.

5 out of 5 stars I only wish it wasn't over!.......2001-03-16

I started this book Tuesday night and finished it Thursday. It was a well-crafted ending to a wonderful series.

I first picked up A Bad Spell in Yurt while visiting a sick relative. From page one I was hooked and devoured the entire series in less than a month. It was a great distraction from the constant trips to the hospital.

Daimbert is someone that anyone would be grateful to have as a friend. I appreciated the time taken with character development, that was careful not to show cariacatures of good and evil, but the complex gray areas we mere mortals dabble in as well.

This last book was highly entertaining and riveting. I am hoping the author will take pity on us all and continue the series through the following generation.

But, how can you possbly top a trip through Hell?

5 out of 5 stars A Real Grand Finale for a Delightful Series!.......2000-12-08

I waited a LONG TIME for this book, and I have to say that it has lived up to my greatest hopes. It is the most satisfying book of the whole marvelous Yurt series. It tied up loose ends that I'd forgotten even existed, and I thoroughly enjoyed the reappearance of characters from earlier books. I also relished the outcome of the Daimbert/Elerius competition. Now, if C. Dale Brittain will only do a Yurt--The Next Generation, so I can see how Antonia turns out!

      Book Description

“Soul food is just what the name implies. It is soulfully cooked food . . . good for your ever-loving soul . . . the shur-‘nuf kinda down-home cookin’ that I grew up on,” writes Sheila Ferguson. Abundant in flavor and variety—ranging from classics such as barbecued spare ribs, fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens to less well known but equally sumptuous recipes such as sweet potato biscuits, grits soufflé, and wild fox grape wine—soul food is a truly American cuisine, originated in the deep South by slaves and later shaped and expanded by the rich diversity of African-American culture.

      5 out of 5 stars SouLovely.......2007-07-20

A delightful book full of delicious recipes with clear instructions, family histories and a whole new vocabulary of odd expressions and descriptions of food. I also bought the more famous "Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook" (Sylvia has a famous restaurant in New York), but I actually prefer this one slightly more, although both are absolutely wonderful. Sylvia's book is larger, more colourful and has more photos than this unassuming book by Sheila Ferguson, but the recipes for both books are just as mouth-watering; Sheila's book has a delicious recipe for "Red Devil's Food Cake" and Sylvia has a similar one called "Red Velvet Cake", for example. It's just that "Soul Food" by Ms. Ferguson has a few more unusual and unknown recipes in it, like her recipe for "Fergy's Fried Chicken". Most of the recipes look delicious and it all depends on the skill of the cook attempting these gems I guess, but I think both books are great references on this style of cooking and both are equally perfect. I would just be more likely to give Sylvia's cookbook as a gift because it is more elegant and I'd probably keep "Soul Food" for myself. No, come to think of it, I'd keep both.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing to add to any recipe.......2006-09-13

The southern recipes are accurate to a fault. This is authentic soul food cuisine. I have found that sometimes I have had to reduce some of the richer ingredients for a "healthier" meal. This is the first cook book I have used that you can just follow the recipe and you do not have to add a thing. The flavoring is just right!

I purchased this book years ago and recently misplaced it and just ordered another copy. I enjoy the recipes, the short stories... it's good reading and the recipes are very good. Brings back memories from the south.

        Book Description

In athletics as in architecture, form follows function, and nowhere is that truth more important than in equestrian sports. The better a horse's conformation (how the animal measures up to, or "conforms," to the ideal standards of its breed or type), the better it will be able to perform. Using hundreds of photographs and drawings, this masterfully produced book will show you how to develop the "eye" that any horseman needs to assess equine conformation and anatomy. Its comprehensive text focuses on ideal and abnormal conformation features; balance and symmetry; the relationship between conformation faults and athletic ability; colors and markings; as well as anatomical elements, teeth, and aging; body systems; and the relationship between structure and function.

Now in paperback, HORSE CONFORMATION is the single most valuable book on its subject and one that deserves a prominent place in every horse owner's or rider's library.

This is a great book for the beginner or the expert horseman! Explains in detail not only a horse's conformation but also the skeletal, muscle and nerve structure. Even better there are TONS of awesome photos and drawings.
I am very happy with this book and would reccomend it to anyone interested in learning more about horses!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but has a few gaps.......2005-04-06

This book covers ALOT of stuff-Conformation(good & bad), bone stucture, muscle structure, Most conformational faults and even has a section on breeds, types and colors(the color section is lacking simply because it is all black and white). It also lacks in the description department. It leaves many pictures without enough explanation about why this conformational 'fault' is a bad thing or what a horse can still do well enough in spite of his less admired physical traits.(lets face it, there are plenty of horses out there that are less than perfect but they are sure keeping someon happy) Some of the pictures barely get descriptions. But there is plenty there to keep a person reading quite a while and this IS the first book I've read with so much on the subject. I would reccomend it as something to have on hand as a reference but keep on the lookout for another book that could help fill in the gaps. Maybe they will come out with a revised and updated edition. Overall this book is pretty handy.

4 out of 5 stars Black and white reference.......2007-10-06

This is not a coffee table book in that there are no pretty full page colour pictures - everything is in black and white and generally quite small. However, for anyone familiar with African art who wants an exhaustive catalogue of the range of works available, this is an invaluable book - luckily, I had seen it in a book shop, so I knew what I was getting. Moreover, many of the pieces are major works or at least of significant aesthetic quality, which cannot be said of most published groupings of African art. Just make sure this is what you are looking for. Now, a full color version of this in two volumes with full page reproductions, that would be worth waiting for.

              Book Description

Art enthusiasts and lovers of African American art have long considered collecting art a hobby reserved solely for the wealthy. Collecting African-American Art: Works on Paper and Canvas effectively dispels this misconception.

In these pages, lavishly illustrated with almost two hundred works by a wide range of artists, readers will find practical guidelines for becoming an informed collector, including specific criteria for working with dealers. By providing succinct advice on framing, insurance, tax and estate planning, as well as pointers on how to care for one's collection, author Halima Taha makes collecting an enjoyable -- and affordable -- pastime for everyone.

Combining a rich and diverse blend of aesthetic traditions from Africa, the Caribbean, and America, African American art has emerged as the most actively collected art in the marketplace. This guide presents both emerging and established artists and identifies dealers throughout the nation specializing in the field. Insightful and accessible, it is the first book to define the role of the collector of African American art. The result is a unique and essential guide to developing a meaningful and rewarding collection.

              Book Description

This comprehensive study of how African and Oceanic arts were brought to Europe and the United States in the late twentieth century uses the esteemed GeneviAve McMillan Collection as a prism to investigate collecting strategies as they intersect with the political conditions of colonialism and independence, and the developing study of African and Oceanic arts. The objects within include sculpture, textiles and musical instruments--some of which were collected in the field, others of which passed through hubs of the international art trade like Paris and Brussels, and still others of which arrived with African "runners," who helped locate objects for sale. As the market expanded, an increasing number of object types joined the canon of what constituted art, and artists in Africa and the Pacific began producing replicas and new types--opening a whole new debate about the objects' authenticity. This valuable tome explores this debate and the social, political and commercial forces underlying it.

The contributors to this volume trace the life history of artifacts that were brought to Europe and America from Congo toward the end of the nineteenth century, and became the subjects of museum displays. They also present fascinating case studies of the pioneering collectors, including such major figures as Frobenius and Torday, discuss the complex and sensitive issues involved in the business of "collecting," and consider how these objects were used in the invention of Africa by the West.

                  Book Description

“I argue for a history of Native American art that is politically informed,” Margaret Dubin writes, “and for a criticism of contemporary Native American fine arts that is historically founded.” Integrating ethnography, discourse analysis, and social theory in a careful mapping of the Native American art world, this insightful new study explores the landscape of “intercultural spaces”—the physical and philosophical arenas in which art collectors, anthropologists, artists, historians, curators, and critics struggle to control the movement and meaning of art objects created by Native Americans.

Dubin examines the ideas and interactions involved in contemporary collecting, in particular, to understand how marketplace demands have homogenized Western perceptions of `authentic' Native American art. In doing so, she reveals the power relations of an art world in which Native American artists work within and against a larger system that seeks to control people by manipulating objects.

“Dubin develops for the reader a clear sense of the difficulties posed by collectors' desires for `authenticity' and relates them to continued efforts to subjugate or contain Indians and their cultural production within the authority of the dominant state. This accessible, clearly written book will have a wide reading, both inside and outside of academia.”—Professor Fred R. Myers, New York University

"Berkeley lecturer Dubin deserves congratulations for even attempting a clear overview of her thorny subject--the history and present state of the collecting and exhibiting of the objects created by the world's indigenous peoples of North America. That she has to a great degree succeeded is gratifying, so vast are the potential pitfalls. Dubin moves between the worlds of anthropology and modern art with equal confidence and does not mistake evenhandedness for blandness. Thus, for example, the naive collectors of "Indian Art" looking for a fix of authenticity are not isolated and condemned, but placed within a broad historical and cultural framework. . . . "Dubin's knowledgeably poised book is an invaluable contribution to cultural studies."-Publishers Weekly

I was dissapointed in this book. I found it a difficult read because the text was inundated with percentages, statistics and numbers. The author used statistics and percentages, which can be manipulated to 'prove' anything, to back up every one of her statements and opinions.

I would have perfered much more straight reporting of her ideas and feelings and much less this mish-mash of numbers and percentages. A very cumbersome read.

I was so happy that a gen Xer took the time out and wrote down and analyzed the current available data regarding various social statistics to come up with something totally different than what is always presented by the media. Farai Chideya took information and simplified it for her generational group, to see and interpret for themselves...the informaiton is very easy to read for those on the go. For those gen Xer's who are frustrated with the negative imagery presented, surely this one will do the job at dispelling the BS.

                      1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2002-09-11

Having watched her even-handed reporting on TV, I assumed I would--in light of the title--get a fair-minded, non-hypey exploration of the complicated issues related to African-Americans. Instead, I got a simplistic, incredibly biased polemic. She distorts numbers and contorts and withholds facts to prove her points. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information, Presented very well.......2001-06-22

An excellent book. It smashes the political lies and rhetoric and presents a staggeringly different side of things. I recommend this book for African Americans who think that we're all doomed or "can't do right". I recommend this book to Caucasians who think that black people are dreaming up racism, and who think that we're all welfare junkies. Chideya also presents statistics that should make everyone ask more questions. If this book doesn't make you want to take political action, read it again, because you missed something!

                      2 out of 5 stars Chideya isn't a numbers person.......2000-08-29

Throughout much of this book, Chideya uses a very quantitative approach -with plenty of statistics- to prove her arguments. In my opinon though, she often doesn't supply all the pertinent stats, and occasionally draws conclusions that are either too simplistic or not suggested by the figures she uses. In all, I didn't feel like my own opinions were firmly challenged while reading this book.
