Book Description
Fresh from the triumph of We Were the Mulvaneys, Joyce Carol Oates continues her exploration of family love and possibilities of human redemption with this compelling story of how one young woman suffers profoundly in the pursuit of love, but manages to emerge safe and whole. Set in several towns on the Chatauqua River in upstate New York, Man Crazy tells the story of Ingrid Boone, who at age eight is taken into hiding by her beautiful young mother, Chloe. Sought by the men who have taunted Chloe, the authorities, and Ingrid's loving but volatile father still haunted by memories of Vietnam, Ingrid and her mother fight to survive both together and apart. "Man crazy" is the label assigned to teenage Ingrid, whose desperate need to find a substitute for her father's affection makes her easy prey for the charismatic leader of a violent cult. Eventually, the police surround the cult compound and a tense standoff erupts in bullets and flames. Ingrid escapes to rebuild her life, and Oates' depiction of this severely damaged young woman's slow but miraculous process of healing stands as one of the most brilliant portraits she has ever created. Oates' gift for haunting imagery reaches new heights in this emotionally resonant work.
This will be published simultaneously with the Dutton release of a major new novel from Oates, My Heart Laid Bare. We Were the Mulvaneys was a national bestseller.

Sex, satanism, and self loathing.......2006-01-14
Described as a novel, it may also be categorised as a series of short stories, centred on the point of view of a female character in various stages of growth - although that term can only be used in the temporal sense. Six of the "chapters" originally appeared as short stories in a range of magazines. An epilogue and prologue were tacked on to the total thus a "novel". Fair enough. But If you imagine a notice board with a series of snapshots depicting various stages of a life then you will get the idea. Each can exist on its own, but looked at in sequence and overall, a larger picture emerges. Some pictures are packed with detail, others offer a glimpse of a moment. THis technique is fitting to the way in which we all of us tend to remember our respective pasts - happy times tend to be foggy blanks where months and years may drift by suddenly punctuated by a dramatic incident. Ms Ingrid Boone has her share of drama. If there is an overall theme it may centre on self loathing, or the search for love, sentiments that are central to many young women growing up in Western society where immediate survival is not an issue. The attraction the likes of the infamous Mr Manson, or even Jimmy Jones, have to young women is a central concern on MAN CRAZY. Is it that when the female child is abandoned by the father it reasons that the fault is one's own, by not being atttractive enough for the father to WANT to stay. The Manson character and Satanist she is beguiled by may be confirming her own view of herself, confirming the loathing, and thus being "honest". In any case, their is much to disgust, including the constant scratching of Ingrid of herself, picking at the pimples, picking at the sores, picking at the scabs, as if trying to destroy the evidence of her loathing - her body. Is the obsession we have with our bodies - Princess Diana and the millions she spent on maintaining her appearance, the series Nip and Tuck - are these evidence of the dislike we have for our bodies? Is Ingrid just an extreme manifestation of millions of young women as the emerge from childhood and realise they do not look like Princess Diana and that that is BAD, and therefore they are worth LESS? Nothing sentimental about Ms Oates' take on being a young woman in a certain place at a certain time. THought provoking and memorable.
A Truly Heartbreaking Read.......2005-03-27
Man Crazy, by Joyce Carol Oates, chronicles the childhood and adolescence of Ingrid Boone, who, with her beautiful young mother Chloe, is forced to flee her normal life multiple times on account of a violent, nearly-absent but ever-present father. Set in Northern New York, in a string of towns bordering the Chautauqua River and Mountains, Man Crazy is written in Ingrid's voice--often in streams of consciousness and reflections on memories--and follows her through various events in her young life: the vision of ghosts under a farmhouse porch; secret visits with her father; the plagiarism of a poem, recited at an assembly; the dozens of encounters with faceless men in the backs of cars; the acid trips; the initiation into a satanic cult led by enigmatic Enoch Skaggs. Her uncertain relationship with her mother is what caused her life to take the direction it did, while at the same time it is her mother who pulls her out of her degradation; thus, the novel has a redemptive quality. Ingrid's life is a troubled one as she looks back on it, telling her story to a counselor. By the end of the novel, Ingrid has reformed, has turned her life around; she is the age of 21, but seems a hundred years old.
The voice Oates gives to Ingrid is a distinctive one; as I mentioned, the story is told in fragments of memory and streams of consciousness, often written in fragments, run-on sentences, and paragraphs that continue for pages. Once I got used to this somewhat confusing manner of writing, I really enjoyed the way Oates uses language for the purpose of character development. Ingrid's voice is honest, simple, and forthright, while at the same time her meanings are multi-layered; in many cases, she is saying more than she thinks she is. Oates also uses her gift for language to paint disturbing, haunting pictures with her words: a teetering bridge, drug and sexual abuse, a decapitation, a dank basement where people are trapped, forced to eat garbage to stay alive. These images are powerful and hard to read about--but at the same time, I found myself unable to stop reading. This novel is beautiful in its simplicity yet startling in its dimensions.
I was unsatisfied with the ending of the novel, however. It seemed as though Oates was eager to give Ingrid a happy ending, but I was left wondering: How can Ingrid possibly love anyone else, when she's just learning to love herself? Nevertheless, I couldn't put this book down; it is a powerful, realistic portrayal of a girl who is given a new beginning after being in the lowest possible state, and it both broke my heart and made it soar.
Joyce Carol Oates at her finest........2005-03-25
I had to keep reading until I finished it. You travel from childhood through adulthood so Oates gives the background so you can understand more of why Ingrid ends up where she does. This is the Oates I want to see in every one of her books. I read Zombie and although I felt like getting sick through most of it, I still don't think anyone else could have written it. I was very pleased reading Man Crazy that I once again found the Oates I fell in love with in her short stories and earlier works. This is a must read for any women who questions why she keeps ending up in the same relationships with guys that don't treat her right. Ingrid is real and out there in the world with no one to help her, just as the Ingrid in the novel. If you want to see what a series of wrong choices made as a teenager and a mother with issues of her own will lead a woman too, read this book because Oates answers that question. It will lead to Ingrid.
Jumping the gun.......2003-10-02
I've only begun the book. I'm intrigued, but not by story line. I'm giving it five stars 'cause it's book that has caught my attention regarding writing ability/style/brains.
Ah, there's the rub. Who's to know anymore if it's the author, publisher, software program or editor that has done the trick?
My childhood friend has had four books published using a standard CD program for writing. What?
I'm still hoping nobody played with Poe's words. And many others of course...........
Excellent.......2003-08-11
This was the first book by Oates that I read. Excellent. I was disappointed with the ending, though. But the way it was written made me feel a part of this young woman's life. At times I thought I was literally having a panic attack! The pace of her writing, the thought process, the mentality of the characters all kept me glued to this book. Some say this book was too gruesome, but I disagree. That was only a small part of the book. Man Crazy is a story about a woman's growth through her fear of abandonment, need for male attention, and obsessive compulsive nature. We're all a little bit like Ingrid sometimes, and parts of this book can hit a little close to home. Sad story, but great writing. I'll definitely read more Oates.

Author Review.......2006-07-02
Port Nowhere was great fun to write, both building the world and creating the stories. Collaboration can create a synergy that excites authors and brings new ideas rushing to get on paper. Our group had the freedom to explore alien points of view and shifting loyalties.
I really like Crila and her dilemma of whom to trust when her life is on the line. Trillfin was one of my characters, and I learned a lot about facing personal limitations while writing her stories with her human lover. My favorite story is about Jesse, who has been in a lot of dark places before, but who is now in much deeper than even he suspects.
I hope you like it.

Port Nowhere is located at the backside of oblivion. A home to those who have nowhere else to go, hence the name. It is a huge hunk of rock the rest of the universe avoids like the plague. The inhabitants, many of whom would love to be anywhere else, are an interesting and diverse lot.
Malik Blayne is at the center of the action on Port Nowhere, whether he's taking care of his friends or fighting the Consolidated Guard or "Connies." A slippery character if there ever was one, Mal is a clone developed to be used as spare body parts for his 'brother'. Having escaped from that life with the help of a space pirate, Mal knows the value of friendship even though he's still trying to figure out just who exactly his friends are.
Crila Maragorn, a half Human, half Halsan female, is one of Mal's so-called friends. Hurt in a battle with the Connies, Crila submits to the healing attentions of the Ophids, a race of very large and poisonous snake creatures. Fitted for a prosthetic arm with more robotic capabilities than your average blaster, Crila takes to the upgrades immediately. But the healing and the prosthetic comes with a price -- induction into the Ophid sisterhood. Can Crila reconcile her Human/Halsan ways with the totally foreign Ophidian mindset?
Many of the residents of Port Nowhere are trying their darnedest to get off the misbegotten piece of rock. So Trillfin Skorm, a Rock Neek, one of the most timid of races, can't believe it when she meets a Human, or "Sape," who willingly moved to the Rock. Knowing that Jule has no idea how to stay alive in Port Nowhere, especially since he loses all his money within minutes of stepping foot out of the spaceship, Trill takes him under her wing and gets him a job. Will Jule's talents as a chef take them to the worlds Trill's always dreamed of visiting?
These are but a few small snippets of the many different and intersecting lives of the residents of PORT NOWHERE. A fresh take on anthologies, each chapter is written by a different author who either introduces new characters or adds a new episode in the adventures of an existing character. The first book in the Port Nowhere Universe series, PORT NOWHERE wonderfully sets up an incredibly well described and unique world. A humor-tinged soap opera in book form, each chapter draws the reader deeper into the lives of the city's inhabitants, many of whom have decidedly quirky personalities. The story ends on a cliffhanger that will leave readers breathlessly waiting for the next installment.
Full of action, adventure, humor, and mystery, PORT NOWHERE is a great sci-fi addition to any library. ***** ~Kathy Samuels, Romance Reviews Today
Liked the Starport Canteen in Star Wars? You'll LOVE this........2004-07-24
Here is a novel unlike any I have ever read before! There are twenty-three chapters and almost a dozen sci-fi authors! The entire novel takes place far away from our planet, Earth, at a place called "Port Nowhere". There are dozens of different species that call Port Nowhere home. The inhabitants affectionately call it "The Rock", because people live below ground. Few ever see the surface. Many believe the stars and tales of other places are just that, tales. As for planets with free water, that could not really exist! Water is never free!
LevOne is for the richest inhabitants. The lowest level (that house beings able to generously be labeled as civilized) is LevSev. There are lower levels, called the Depths. But trust me on this, you DO NOT want to go there!
Let me tell you about a few characters now. As the story opens, Port Nowhere is getting a new local commander. Captain Carle Eversyn arrives on the Rock. He commands the Consolidated Guard (A.K.A. the "Connies") of Malpairiso Sector. He has the last word on everything! His main goal is to capture Malik "Mal" Blayne. Malik has single-handedly kept the Connies (and all the authorities that claimed authority before them) in chaos. Glimpses are often seen of Mal, but no one can find him. As with the best villains, Mal hides right under Captain Carle's nose. Mal is also Rudof Dyll, the richest person at Port Nowhere, but only his bodyguard knows it. Mal and Rudof look nothing alike. As for the bodyguard, he is one of the Vamir. Think Wookie, but meaner and deadlier.
Then there is Crila "Cri" Maragorn. Her left forearm is a prosthesis. She is a bartender at Dhamu's Place. But that left hand can become several weapons, power tools, and so much more! She joins the Circle of the Beryl. (Think assassins and spies that look like tall lizards.) Cri is half Human and half Halsan, so her form is human female, red hair, lilac skin color, and she is a lethal combination of lovely and deadly.
There is also a boy, Tau the Silent, who is just hitting puberty. I found him exceptional. Tarzan, if you recall, was raised by apes. Tau was raised by things much more deadly. I refuse to say what and I doubt that you would ever guess.
***** There are several other characters, some get a lot of attention, some do not. The most awesome thing about this particular novel is that each chapter is written by a different author. So for the first few chapters, it is like reading an anthology. But each chapter picks up where the last left off! Soon the authors are using characters from each other. So Mal and Captain Carle have a plot going, then Mal could enter that plot and have another going that involves Tau, who may have another going with several others... You get the idea.
We have all heard the saying "Too many cooks in the kitchen will spoil the dinner." Yet somehow, these authors have collaborated and the stories flow smoother than silk. You would have to really be looking to figure out where one author stops and another begins. Few authors can works well with other authors. This group is part of that elite clan. If you enjoyed the Starport Canteen scene during the original Star Wars movie, then you will LOVE this novel. I cannot recommend this novel highly enough! Astounding! *****

Fantastic Flotilla.......2004-06-03
In the tradition of Thieves' World, The Fleet: Counter Attack assembles a collection of stories from some of sci-fi's top names, each revolving around a shared universe featuring Us Against Them. The bulk of the stories are classic military sci-fi, with soldiers taking on vicious aliens. Very good stuff, and each story is well-written. As shared universe anthologies go, this one ranks up there with the best Thieves' World collection.
The only let-down comes from Piers Anthony. His story "Soft Like a Woman" is well-done, with just the right amount of action and dramatic tension. However, Anthony reveals his on-going obsession with perceived chauvinism. His main character is insulted, degraded, and ignored because she is a woman, and she complains that her gender is keeping her from being taken seriously in the Fleet. The only problem is that several other stories in the book featured women in prominent, "masculine" roles: combat platoon leader (Christopher Stasheff), pilot (Janny Wurts), commander (Jody Lynn Nye), to name just a few. Anthony's political tirade mars an otherwise excellent story.
Book Description
The complete guide to buying, cooking, and enjoying seafood—with more than 200 recipes—from the restaurant that knows it best.
Legal Sea Foods’s motto is, “If it isn’t fresh, it isn’t Legal,” and the company has built its stellar reputation on serving only the freshest and safest fish. The Legal Sea Foods restaurant opened in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1968, and the business has since expanded to include twenty-six restaurants in seven states along the Eastern Seaboard as well as a mail-order company. In 1998, Bon Appétit named it one of ten classic American restaurants.
Featuring the innovative recipes that have been added to Legal’s menu during the past fifteen years (since the first Legal Sea Foods Cookbook was published), this new cookbook covers not only the traditional gold standards (Smoked Bluefish Paté, Clam Chowder) but also contemporary dishes such as Crabmeat with Morel Mushrooms, Spicy Fried Grouper with Jalapeño Mayonnaise, and Bluefish in Kale and Tomato Sauce. Regional specialties, such as Hog Snapper Pepe (from the Boca Raton branch) and Baltimore Crab Cakes, are also included.
In addition to the vast selection of main dishes, there are appetizers (Spicy Crab Cakes, Smoky Mackerel Spread, Mussels au Gratin), salads (Shrimp Tabbouleh, Crabmeat and Mango Salad, Lobster and Israeli Couscous Salad), pasta and rice dishes (Linguine with Littlenecks; Salmon with Asparagus and Ravioli; Risotto with Shrimp, Celery, and Peppers), soups and sandwiches (Shellfish Gumbo, Fish Chowder, Grilled Swordfish Tacos), vegetables and side dishes (Speckled Butter Bean Casserole, Onion Strings, Chipotle Sweet Potato Mash), and desserts (Key Lime Pie, Blueberry and Peach Crumble, Mango and Strawberry Shortcake).
The New Legal Sea Foods Cookbook also provides an overview of the full range of fin fish and shellfish (from bass to wolffish, clams to squid) available today and the best cooking techniques for each type—whether it is baking, broiling, frying, poaching, sauteing, grilling, oven-steaming, or microwaving—as well as how to distinguish wild from farm-raised fish. There is complete advice on how to tell if fish is fresh, how to store it once you bring it home, how to prepare it, and how to make safe and delicious use of the leftovers. Much more than a cookbook, this is the ultimate sourcebook from America’s seafood specialists.

Not the recipes I'd expected..........2007-06-10
I lived in the Boston area for over 10 years and went to Legal's many times for quick late-night meals (clam chowder or a fish sandwich to go) as well as for more elaborate meals on special occasions. I really liked the place a lot. So when I found out they had a cookbook, I thought it would be great to replicate some of the dishes that I'd really liked at home, esp. now that I'm living on the West Coast. The names of some of the favorites were there: Crab and Artichoke Hushpuppies, Baked Scrod, etc. But when I looked closely at these recipes once I bought the book, I realized that they are NOT the dishes that they served at the restaurants. The Baked Scrod at Legal's has buttery herb breadcrumbs, yet the cookbook describes it as a dish that's scrod, baked in butter and topped with lemon (and that's it - the recipe is really, really short). The Crab and Artichoke hushpuppies recipe doesn't have artichokes in the ingredients list. I'm not sure why artichokes are listed in their name then? And I remember there being artichokes in the version I've eaten at the restaurants. The key lime pie at the restaurants is somewhat like a light, creamy key lime cheesecake with a graham cracker crust, yet the recipe in the book is the standard more jelly-like key lime pie with a standard floury pie crust. I was really confused about how they could claim in the inner flap that this was "the complete guide to buying, cooking, and enjoying seafood - with more than 200 recipes - from the restaurant that knows it best." I guess they meant that the guide was from the restaurant but not the recipes? Overall, there's lots of advice on how to select and cook seafood and I'm sure it's all very useful to people who want to know more about that, but the book didn't serve the purpose I bought it for - to replicate favorite dishes at home.
Yummy food...easy to follow.......2005-09-28
The food from here is so good and the recipies are pretty easy to follow with lots of background information on types of fish and how to purchase seafood.
Habeas Fishus.......2004-09-07
Along with the Italian Food of the North End, this restaurant offered some of my favorite food on a recent vacation to Boston. Unique recipes, with delicious blends of flavors, fancy yet casual, it is a wonderful place to eat. Their slogan is the reassuring "If it isn't fresh, it isn't legal." While I'm no stranger to well made fresh seafood, the regional touches were wonderfully noticeable and appreciated.
The book beings with a brief history of the restaurant that began in Cambridge in 1968, and Legal's hints on selecting and storing fish, a fairly thorough description of fin fill and shellfish, and a briefer description of preferred basic cooking techniques at "Legal." While these section sometimes reads a bit too much like an advertisement for the restaurant, there is some fascinating "inside" consumer-friendly facts and anecdotes about selecting and preparing fish-it does show the complexities of ope4ratingf a restaurant and has a lot of good information on health-related matters (although mercury in some types of fish is not mentioned.
Recipes are easy to follow and vary in their complexity: I saw one shrimp dish with only 5 ingredients (excluding spices) and, on the facing page, one with twelve. Although there is no information on preparation time, these are often misleading without a staff of five to help you) There is a tremendous variety in the types of fish, and the courses in which they are used. In fact, there are over 200 recipes divided into appetizers, main courses, leftovers, salads, pasta and rice dishes with seafood, soups and sandwiches, vegetables and side dishes, sauces and coatings, and even fish desserts!. There are some wonderful whimsical line drawings by "The New Yorker's" Edward Koren, and a useful index. You can buy heftier and more expert-oriented fish cookbooks, but this is one of the more entertaining, creative, and useful ones. Recommended as a great gift for any afishionado.
Legal Sea Foods has a Cookbook! WOW !.......2004-05-21
I traveled to Washington, DC and also to Baltimore, MD and many people said "If you want great seafood-go to Legal Sea Food!" I tried it when I was in Baltimore and LOVED IT! The Cream of Crab soup was utterly divine! I worked for sometime at Red Lobster in my younger days-so I know good seafood! Buy the book-it will give you insight into making excellent dishes at home!
A bonanza of information and recipes.......2003-09-24
Berkowitz, owner of Legal Sea Foods and Doerfer, who coauthored the 1988 Legal Sea Foods cookbook, offer a volume packed with detailed information on choosing and cooking seafood, including health, safety and technique advice and an alphabetized guide to fish and shellfish. Clearly written recipes offer serving, presentation and variation tips and run the gamut from classics like Clam Chowder and Boiled Lobster and Baked Haddock to Stir-Fried Monkfish with Beans and Lemongrass, and Arctic Char Burritos.
The book is organized traditionally, from appetizers to dessert and includes chapters for leftovers (fish cakes, crepes, latkes and more), soups and sandwiches and sauces and coatings (Tartar, Sesame Seed Avocado, Mango Salsa, Cracker Crumb topping).
Most of the recipes are simple but innovative, like Steeped Shrimp with Fruit, Broiled Tuna with Tomatillos and Peppers, Citrus Soft-Shell Crabs. Some are luxurious - Crabmeat with Morel Mushrooms or Lobster Edgardo (with scallops, wine and cream), while others are more earthy, like Mackerel Stew, Baked Cod Parmesan, Oyster and Mushroom Casserole, and still others are just sublimely uncomplicated, like Summer Flounder in Butter Sauce or Marinated Grilled Shrimp or Seafood Seviche.
Wonderfully complete, this is a book for everyone. It assumes no knowledge, but never talks down to the reader. The design is attractive, with illustrations by Edward Koren, the advice is crisp and invaluable, and the range of dishes is extensive.

Great Book.......2006-07-21
I have two pugs (11 and 2) This book is the BEST!
Informative guide to pugs.......2006-05-02
I found this book a good reference for taking care of pugs. With their little noses pugs use their paws a lot, much like cats to fell around. Their paws are sensitive. Generally pugs are good natured. Like all pure breeds they have their individual needs so this book is a good way to learn about them.
Very helpful and Informative.......2006-01-04
Our pug puppy was supposed to come 2 weeks later, then he showed up 24 hours later (long story). We bought this book on our 1st trip to the pet store with the dog in tow. Very helpful information about pug puppies, the history of the pug, grooming, etc etc. This book has helped me relax and feel confident that we are doing everything right for our puppy.
The BEST Pug Handbook you can buy!!.......2004-03-16
I can't say enough about this very informative Pug Handbook. It touches on everything you would ever want to know about pugs and more. This IS the book you want to get, most definitely, if you have a pug, or if you are thinking about getting a pug.
Thank you Brenda Belmonte for taking the time, to care enough about our pugs, to write such an exceptional Pug Handbook.
Outstanding Book.......2004-02-26
Having been researching this breed for the past few months, I found this book to be the best. Just about every question you could have about this breed is covered in basic terms that are easy to understand.
Of particular intrest was the chapter related to the health of the dog. I now feel I am more aware of the needs for pugs, and what type of problems to watch for.
If you want to learn about pugs, this is a MUST.

Poooor Quality.......2005-04-13
I should have paid more attention to the ratings. I was looking for something to get me started, and this book just barely did that. Anyone with any woodworking skill at all will cringe at the drawings and poor quality of the measurements. Photo's are good. Quality of the products are very pooooor!
Zero Stars!.......2000-08-01
I have built one of the coffins following the directions in the book. Some measurements are missing, and some are not correct. This cost me in materials and time. Beware!
Poorly done!.......1999-06-16
I was very disappointed in this book. We make our living from woodworking and the techniques in this book are better suited to junior high school shop class.
As a coffin builder, I cannot recommend this book........1999-04-18
The photographs in "Do-It-Yourself Coffins" are nicely done. Unfortunately, the artisanry and aesthetic appeal of the coffins are not. As a person who designs and builds fine, handcrafted coffins, I was disappointed in the level of how-to information presented as well as the quality and appearance of the finished products.

A lovely book with excellent, clear diagrams. The step-by-step instructions are superb which makes the designs achievable by any level of painting ability. The designs are classic and can be easily integrated into any decorating style. No "cutesy" stuff here! The paint conversion tables at the end of the book were a complete surprise - that's what sold the book to me. Bravo!

Still as charming as ever..........2007-01-11
I think of this book as an adult "christmas book". I have had a copy for some years and purchased this one to accompany a Spode Christmas "tea pot and cup for one" I gave to my mother. The 25th Anniversary Edition is a celebration of a book that will never go out of style and is a perennial reminder of gracious traditions and feelings that are the heart's treasures.
A Cup of Christmas Tea.......2007-01-10
It's a family tradition to read this book at Christmas
A story to be read a few weeks before Christmas.......2006-09-03
This poem is less about Christmas than it is about facing the reality of a beloved aged relative and our reasons both to visit them and to avoid them. The Great Aunt of the main character is old, it is Christmas and he knows that he really should pay her a visit. However, he is reluctant as he remembers her as a vibrant dynamic person and now she is so frail she can barely get around. After a great deal of thought and destruction of false excuses, he finally decides to go.
When he arrives she is very glad to see him and as they begin to talk his memories of past Christmases come back and those memories make her seem less frail. He sees what she has done to prepare for Christmas and wonders how she manages to do it all. As the story ends, they are settled in drinking a cup of Christmas tea.
This is a touching story that should be read by everyone a few weeks before Christmas. Few of us are so unlucky not to have an aged relative in our family. This tale reminds us that sometimes the best times are when we relive past times.
Gift to Remember.......2006-03-23
Anyone who has ever had an elderly relative who they had special memories with, will cherish this book. I have bought several and we read it at Christmas every year.
Pulls at the heart strings..........2005-12-03
I was given this book years ago by my mother-in-law who knew I was missing my family at the holidays. Each year I look forward to unpacking it with the decorations. And each year it still brings tears to my eyes as I remember feeling the same way as the author when I was younger having to visit relatives that I didn't want to. I would love to go back and have one more cup of tea with my grandmother and aunt. A lovely book to be treasured each year.

Delightful.......2001-02-09
I picked up the cassette version in Hanover, NH while visiting the bookstore there, then my wife and I listened to it on the drive home to Connecticut. We'd heard about the book, but hadn't read it. What a treat. First, it surprised us to hear it in rhyme. But it wasn't rhymy, if you know what I mean. It flowed, and the sentences weren't doing somersaults to make the rhyme scheme work. It was great prose, too, not just poetry. And the narrative which carried the sentiment was so touching. Not even a half hour for both this story and the sequel, both of which were on the same cassette. Lovely. Delightful. Sorry I hadn't discovered it earlier. reviewed by Steve Burt, author of A CHRISTMAS DOZEN FROM THE CHRISTMAS STORY PASTOR.

A very good book on Napoleonic art.......2001-10-26
This book deals with a largely ignored topic which is that of analysing the considerable output of Napoleonic-themed prints produced mainly by the Pellerin firm in Epinal. The author weaves in the historical perspectives of the nature of these prints and the social role they play in shaping the perceptions of the French nation in the post-Napoleonic era. In that respect, this book has succeeded marvellously.
However, the analysis of the prints themselves is problematic. The prints generally deal with the pictorial representation of Napoleon as an iconic figure as well as representations of his military campaigns. To do full justice to these prints then, one should be familiar with the military uniforms and the correct representation of Napoleon's military achievements. The author is obviously unfamiliar with the military aspects of the Napoleonic era as there are numerous errors in interpretation of these prints in this book. Furthermore, she is also unaware of the full panoply of Napoleonic paintings from which many of the artisans of these prints may have drawn their ideas.
For example, she has confused the red uniform of the first consul in a painting by Gros with that of the uniform of the Colonel General of the Grenadiers a pied in a print by Georgin. Both uniforms were worn by Napoleon. The author also thinks that the print entitled Napoleon at the Camp of Boulogne was based on the famous painting by David entitled The Distribution of the Eagles. The print is more likely to be based on a painting by Debret entitled Distribution of the Cross of the legion of Honour 1804 with which it shares remarkable similarity. In another print, she has mistaken the green uniform of the Chasseurs a cheval for that of the Grenadiers a pied, another of Napoleon's favourite uniform.
In a Georgin print entitled The battle of Essling-Death of the Duke of Mentebello, she doesn't realise that the dying Marshal Lannes is the Duke of Montebello, and she wrongly ascribes this to an Austrian officer in a white uniform!
In a Vernet print entitled Napoleon at the battle of Lutzen, what she has identified as Imperial cavalry looks more like horse artillery. In yet another print by Raffet entitled They Grumbled and Continued to Follow Him, the author states that Napoleon was leading them out of Russia. Napoleon never led his troops out of Russia (he left them to Eugene Beauharnais and rushed back to Paris) and the print is obviously based on themes during the 1813-1814 campaign in France.
In a Vernet painting entitled Battle of Wagram, she identifies a page as an officer and she wrongly gives the year of the battle of Austerlitz as 1804 when it should have been 1805.
Despite these numerous errors and others, the book is a very entertaining read and I thorough recommend it.
A must for those who are interested in popular art. Anyone who works on the napoleonian myth should read this book.
Book Description
The story of two women--one a hunter-gatherer in Botswana, the other an ailing American anthropologist--this powerful book returns the reader to territory that Marjorie Shostak wrote of so poignantly in the now classic Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman. Here, however, the ground has perceptibly shifted. First published in 1981, Nisa served as a stirring introduction to anthropology's most basic question: Can there be true understanding between people of profoundly different cultures?
Diagnosed with breast cancer, and troubled by a sense of work yet unfinished, Shostak returned to Botswana in 1989. This book tells simply and directly of her rediscovery of the !Kung people she had come to know years before--the aging, blunt, demanding Nisa, her stalwart husband Bo, understanding Kxoma, fragile Hwantla, and Royal, translator and guide. In Shostak's words, we clearly see !Kung life, the dry grasslands, the healing dances, the threatening military presence. And we see Shostak herself, passionately curious, reporting the discomforts and confusion of fieldwork along with its fascination. By turns amused and frustrated, she describes the disappointments--and chastening lessons--that inevitably follow when anthropologists (like her younger self) romanticize the !Kung.
Throughout, we observe a woman of threatened health but enormous vitality as she pursues the promise she once discovered in the !Kung people and, above all, in Nisa. At the core of the book is the remarkable relationship between these two women from different worlds. They are often caught off guard by the limits of their mutual understanding. Still, their determination to reach out to each other lingers in the reader's mind long after the story ends--providing an eloquent response to questions that Nisa so memorably posed.
"It was not that we had become the best of friends or like close family. It was simply that she and I had the most straightforward connection I had ever had with anyone, before or since. It was as if the !Kung culture and my talks with Nisa touched something beyond reason in me. Even though I didn't necessarily like everything Nisa said, nor everything about her, my heart had been captured. But how often I wished Nisa had been more noble, more selfless, and more philosophical. Nisa had to be known well to be appreciated, for she was complex and difficult. She probably would say much the same about me. We both wanted things from each other, and neither of us got as much as we hoped for. That we both got some of what we wanted--well, that made our friendship extremely valuable."
--from the Epilogue

Return to Nisa.......2001-03-30
As a survivor of breast cancer, it was amazing to read this book. Just as amazing is the story of how it was written--the ultimate act of courage by the author. It is a book about friendship, Africa, breast cancer, and womankind.
Compelling.......2001-01-16
You'll be completely drawn into Return to Nisa, whether or not you've read Marjorie's Shostak's original classic anthropological text Nisa. Author, Marjorie Shostak returns to the bush in Africa two decades after the publication of her first book. This time, Marjorie has been diagnosed with breast cancer and feels compelled to visit her African friend, Nisa. Marjorie's relationship with Nisa is complicated and compelling. Theirs is not a traditional Western friendship, but somehow they are able to transcend insurmountable obstacles and share intimate tales of their lives. We learn that this time around, Marjorie has breast cancer. Not only does she leave behind the comfort of a modern medical establishment but also her three children. It becomes obvious why this author felt a calling to return to the bush. This piece of non-fiction is fascinating. You won't be able to put it down.
