Book Description
Memoirs of a Coxcomb By John Cleland Edited by Hal Gladfelder
Published in 1751, John Cleland's second novel (after the notorious Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure) is a witty and complex portrait of aristocratic British society in the mid-eighteenth century. Its young protagonist, Sir William Delamore, meets, falls in love with, and pursues the mysterious heiress Lydia. Rather than a conventional romance, however, the novel is an acerbic social satire, and Sir William an unreliable narrator and incomplete hero. In its experiments with narrative form and its sophisticated examination of masculine identity, Memoirs of a Coxcomb is an important marker in the development of the eighteenth-century novel.
This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction that places Memoirs in the context of Cleland's life and literary career. Also included is a broad selection of appendices, including Tobias Smollett's review of the novel, selections from Cleland's criticism, three texts by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, and contemporary documents on masculinity (particularly the figures of the coxcomb and the fop) and prostitution.

The (Complete) Adventures Of Tiger And Del.......2007-10-11
The Novels of Tiger and Del, Volume I
The Novels of Tiger and Del, Volume II: Sword-Maker - Sword Breaker
The Novels of Tiger and Del, Volume III (Sword-Dancer Saga)
In the beginning of this very enjoyable, unique series, we meet Sandtiger, a man who was raised as a nameless orphan, a foreigner from an unknown land and a slave within a nomadic desert tribe. He gained his name and begrudged freedom as a boy when he killed a deadly, venomous sandtiger which had been preying upon members of the tribe. Defeating death, and bearing the beast's claw marks as a distinctive scar upon his face, Sandtiger found a willing teacher who took him in and taught him the skills and honor codes of the sword dancer. Driven, he achieved the highest level of mastery, (7th level) in record time, and went on to become a living legend. Much of the story is narrated by Tiger, mixed with third person perspective. Roberson did an admirable job using this fresh technique; it works well.
When he is not hiring out his services as a sword dancer in order to settle disputes or matters of honor, Tiger, who is in his mid-30's, spends his time in cantinas, drinking and womanizing. It is within such an establishment that he is tracked down by young, beautiful Delilah, a fair skinned woman with blonde hair from the far north who carries a sword (unheard of for a female) and claims to be a sword dancer. Despite personality clashes, Delilah hires Tiger as a guide to help her journey across the very large, deadly desert of the region. Del is a driven soul, searching for her lost brother, and for revenge against murderous bandits who took him, and her innocence, years prior.
As the adventure unfolds, Tiger is forced, by circumstances and interactions, to adjust his perspectives and attitudes towards Del, and women in general. It becomes evident that Del is a truly skilled sword dancer, as well as a sword singer who is able, through her song, to call forth a mystical power which is infused within the spirit of her specially forged blade. It also becomes known that Del is quite likely Tiger's equal in the dance, a discovery which follows betrayal and near death at each other's hands. Through it all, we discover that the presence of magic is very disquieting to Tiger, both mentally and physically, every time it is encountered. This leads to ironies.
Through the first of these novels, we experience the hardships and struggles faced by the couple as they fight to fulfill Del's quests and simply stay alive. We are given views into the humorous relationship which Tiger faces on a regular basis with his very spirited, very difficult stallion. We also enjoy the gradual meeting of minds and souls of our two heroes, creating a bond of loyalty between the two, which becomes imperative to Tiger's very existence as he is eventually faced with the threat of an ancient, powerful evil which struggles to control him through his own mystical sword, a sword forged specifically for him during a journey to Del's homeland, a sword which he did not even want.
Over the course of the first four books, Tiger becomes increasingly embroiled in circumstances beyond his control, a victim of prophecy and fate. His love for Del leads him to break oaths, which makes him a target for death, outside the ceremonial circle of the sword dance. This leads to his departure from his beloved home in the southern desert region, searching overseas for the unknown, unconfirmed land of his ancestry, all upon the basis of a stranger's comments. A stranger with similar appearance and large build. This is where the final two novels begin.
Upon their sea voyage, Tiger and Del encounter pirates, slavers, and near drowning. Tiger never learned to swim, having been raised in a desert. As the story progresses, we are introduced to the interesting female captain of the pirate crew, an attractive redhead who desires Del. We also meet the first mate, a mysterious outcast from Tiger's homeland who bears strange blue tattooing upon his shaved head, multiple piercings, and a secretive knowledge of mystical powers. The mate recognizes Tiger's common heritage, and rather than selling their captives into outright slavery, Tiger is ransomed to the matriarch of his homeland as a potential lost heir to the throne. The bounty he was traded for, however, indentures and angers Tiger, but bound by his own codes of honor, he agrees to cooperate with a task she sets before him... for awhile.
Up to this point, I have attempted to offer only the most general of a synopsis, hoping to inspire interest but not to give too much away. The joy and excitement lies within the steps of the journey. From this point, If your interest has not been inspired as of yet, nothing else I say will matter. Assuming that it has, I will only say that Tiger sleeps with death, and we discover interesting things about the first mate and his abilities. Secrets are then gradually revealed about Tiger, himself, secrets he is not pleased at all to know. Intrigue and irony ensue, in large portions, in more ways than magic can account for.
Whenever magic is dealt with in Roberson's Tiger and Del novels, it is always low-key, for the most part. It is not along the lines of Tolkien's wizardry or the magic of elves, it is much more subtle, and I believe, more suited to the stories. (Nothing comes across as "over the top.") I really cannot give any more of the story away without creating a spoiler, but I will say that I was sad to see the saga end. To me, that has always been a measure of a really good book or series. This series has definately been among my favorites to read, and I am somewhat particular about what I will endorse. I hope my effort here has been enlightening and enticing.
A worthy-if offbeat-fantasy compliation.......2007-09-07
Meet Tiger. Or rather, the Sandtiger, the most famous, skilled and revered sword-dancer in the south (as he would say it, but then a man must build a reputation.) Tiger exists solely for the sword-dance, and for pretty women, and liquor. And I'm not going to say that all of that changed when he met Del, but some of it did.
Del is an oddity to Tiger, a northern, pale skinned, pale hared woman who wears a sword that exudes magic (not that he gives much credence to magic, but it is one weird sword.) At first he's more than doubtful that she herself is a sword-dancer, but when she hires him to take her across a deadly dessert on a search for her brother who was kidnapped by slavers five years ago; he is forced by circumstances to learn her skill. Her tragic past and his own as well, are part of the package.
This was one of the weirdest fantasy novels I ever read and I mean that in a good way. Generally I hate first person but Tiger's voice is so true and funny and sounds so real that it's a joy to read. From his rather boneheaded observations about women (which do change as the book goes on) to his constant battle with his seemingly invincible and very mean horse, Tiger is the perfect narrator. Also the tense shifts as his self perception does, so when Tiger losses himself the book slides into third person which is an amazing writing tactic I've never seen before. The book (or I should say Books, because this omnibus addition contains the first two of six novels) has everything a good fantasy novel should have. Magic, adventure, tortured heroes who really aren't that heroic, heroines who don't need rescuing, mystery, magical creatures who are rather malicious as well as good ones, even a nice creation of the world myth.
The two novels in this book show a lot in our main characters, Tiger and Del. The more we learn about them the more complicated they become, and the harder it is to let them just live on paper. I LOVED this book (despite the first person, and my rather sketchy history with this authors other works) and ordered the last books before I'd even finished the first.
If you like fantasy, romance (subtle though it may be) adventure, or just swords, then read this book. If not, well, that's your loss.
Five Stars.
A Compilation if finally here...And well worth the wait!!!.......2006-02-08
Tiger and Del in this Sword Dancer series is a tale about two exceptional warriors having no respect for each other except for each other's prowess with the sword. The first book begins with Del hiring Tiger, a living legend among swordsmen, to aid her as a guide in the deserts of the South as she searches for her brother. She is from the wintery North where swords are magically bound to its user. She has sworn to find and free her brother from slavery, and also to kill the slavers. In the course of their adventures animosity and mutual condescension becomes grudging respect, than a deep rooted friendship that evolves into love. Of course there are lots of sword dancing, conventional battles, and confrontations with magic that will have you spinning through the pages and enjoying the thrilling ride.
Jennifer Roberson crafts exciting adventures that just happen to have fully developed main characters who you will grow to know like old friends. This series is different from novels where the emphasis is on either character relationships OR adventure. The stories of Tiger and Del balance both to the satisfaction of all readers. Each novel is told in the voice of Tiger. Some will love him, other readers will find him too full of himself. Yet, he is engaging, and too charming to resist the tales.
I have read the entire series and look forward to rereading in this compilation. If you have read this series this book is a worthy addition for your collection, although I wish it came in hardcover. If this is your first introduction to the series or to the author, Jennifer Roberson, you could not start at a better place.

feminist ?.......2007-10-09
When I read this book when it first came out, I remember thinking how great it was to finally find something written by a woman who was not hidding her gender under a masculine pseudonym or who had to use just initials for a first name.
In retrospect, after many years, I realize the only thing I remember about it is that it sounded like Lesbian soft core porn with males reduced to mechanical sex slaves for the domineeting females. This was considered very avant-garde stuff then before it turned out that real feminism just consisted in having women having access to well paying professional jobs (doctors, lawyers, etc.).
The real future turned out to be a lot more prosaic but more empowered than we could ever have imagined.
The best she has to offer.......2000-05-01
Joanna Russ is a big name in feminist science fiction for a reason: she was one of the first big radical noisemakers in a predominantly male world.
First does not always mean best, and even best does not necessarily mean great.
I'm sure that die hard feminists would disagree with me, but, after sharing this and other Russ books with my female feminist friends, I can only say that her work is sometimes good, sometimes passable, sometimes garbage. Rarely great. The Female Man is an IMPORTANT book, but by far not a GREAT book.
This collection is probably the best, and not coincidentally, the least radical she has to offer. It is certainly more enjoyable, although could not be considered important.
It contains several stories collected from other sources (presumably previously published stories from magazines) containing, loosely, a chronological tale of an adventurer named Alyx. The descriptions and chronology are variously inconsistent; this is not necessarily a bad thing, since the stories stand independent, and since they are suppposed to represent an idea more than a single character.
Her writing style is short sentences and sentence fragments, if that is your sort of thing. Also of note, this book contains what is probably her only reference to heterosexual sex (I could be wrong, but there were no other references in the two other books of hers that I read).
Russ has often been vocal about getting people to go out and read the female corpus of literature, naming some great women writers as her inspirations. I agree; there are some great women writers. You should probably read them instead.

A Great Cook Book for the working girl.......2007-01-10
This is a wonderful cookbook for a working person. I found I had almost all of the items already in my kitchen and the receipts are so easy and quick to put together.
Good book, Great food!.......2007-01-09
I really like the recipes, and the food is very tasty. My family loves anything I make out of this.
GREAT PRICE.......2007-01-09
I LOVE THESE COOKBOOKS AND THIS IS A GREAT PRICE. I PAID MORE FOR MY OWN THESE WERE ACTUALLY GIFTS. I HATE THAT I BOUGHT MINE AT FULL PRICE.
Good for Inexperienced Cooks.......2006-06-28
After seeing the rave reviews, I was excited to try this new book. Unfortunately, upon receiving it, I was disappointed. I'm an experienced cook who likes a wide variety of foods; this book offers easy recipes, but the variety is limited. At one point, I felt like I had read 10 ways to recreate instant rice!
This book would be excellent for new cooks who are unsure of how to combine foods or don't want to take the time to experiment. The recipes are quite easy, healthy and include ingredients almost everyone will have.
This book is NOT useful for those of us who know our way around a kitchen, though, or who understand common sense ways to cut down on fatty foods.
Good, easy cooking.......2006-02-05
I own two cookbooks in the "Busy People" series, and both of them are well-thumbed and often-used. I'm a bachelor with limited cooking skills (and with even less patience when it comes to kitchen chores), but this book offers simple, easy recipes that can be quickly prepared with very few ingredients. The directions are concise, and each recipe is printed on a separate page with a graphic that clearly gives preparation and cooking time. Nutritional information for each dish is also listed. The recipes are generally low in fat, but they don't have the long-as-your-arm list of exotic ingredients and spices that I find in many low-fat cookbooks.
Of course some of the recipes are better than others, but almost everything I've tried has been very good. There's nothing fancy here: if you want to impress someone with a virtuoso kitchen performance, there may be better collections. For plain ol' weeknight cooking that's healthy, fast, and inexpensive, this book is a worthy standby.
Book Description
Gus was a lucky dog. Injured and abandoned, he could have become another of the 7 million animals euthanized every year. Then Stephanie Williams entered the picture. A successful journalist, she had been diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer at the age of 30. On medical leave and living alone, she wanted a warm four-legged companion. When she saw Gus's soulful eyes and goofy grin, it was love at first sight: she would rescue him, and he would return the favor.
Just Gus is about how much one dog did to make a dying woman happy — giving tireless love, comfort, and support. This extraordinary story shows how one dog brought joy and hope to a woman's last days.

A Heartfelt Book.......2007-08-16
This book, although sad, makes you feel so good. The devoted love an an unwanted dog helps a dying woman to get through her last two years of her battle with cancer. Written well and with photographs.
Very moving story.......2007-05-14
I absolutely loved this book. It was a quick read, but very moving. Another perfect example of how therapeutic and healing having an animal in your life can be. Bravo!!
Sweet story disappointing book.......2007-03-23
This was a very sweet, compelling story. But I read the book in a metter of 20 minutes, way too short! My fault for not reviewing the number of pages.
A very touching story........2007-02-23
Not many pages but what the book says is very powerful. It makes you wonder how much fate and destiny really does factor in our lives. Hope was given to a woman in the form of a dog and hope was given to a dog by someone who I believe was meant to be the one. They found and needed each other is a under statement. The story will make you laugh and cry. Worth every dime and I would recommend it to anyone.
just gus: a rescued dog and the woman he loved.......2007-02-12
a wonderful story, very well told and covered beautifully in photographs. it reminds us that taking just one poor little lost pup from an animal shelter and giving it love and understanding, can so enrich our lives, no matter what our situation is or what lies ahead.

Best book ever written on wood carving.......2007-07-17
If a person could only have one book on woodcarving, this would be THE book. It was written back in 1911, so some of the material is out of date. For example, the section on how to sharpen tools is dated. Some of the "tone" of this large (568 page)book is in the style of stuff written at that time. It can be a bit preachy and it can get a bit philosophical at times. For example it talks about how learning to carve wood makes you a better person. But these points are so minor, when you consider the entire book, that they cannot even be considered as flaws. There is no other book which even tries to cover just about all types of woodcarving. It covers:tools, history, and styles. It provides an almost unlimited (1146 to be exact), and certainly unparalleled set of photos and line drawings of different types of carvings throughout history. He even has a chapter on how to set up training programs for woodcarving for various groups of people.
Mr. Hasluck does provide some "how to" information. He provides a set of recommended gauges, clamps, sharpening equipment, bench designs, etc. He tells you about and even illustrates the various steps of carving (setting in, grounding, modeling and finishing). He is the only author I have come across who explains why he recommended every tool that he recommends. This is absolutely enlightening!!! It is interesting that his recommended set of tools is much different from the modern authors on this subject (eg Chris Pye, Nora Hall, etc). After researching this topic, I have come to the conclusion that Hasluck selected his set to be most appropriate to highly detailed relief carving, which is the type of carving that he spends the most time on.
I would bet that if someone wanted to start learning how to carve, and they bought only this book, they would be very disappointed. If you are looking for a "how to" book, which gives you a preselected sequence of five projects, from easy to medium, and tells you which tool to use to make each cut in each project, then this is NOT the book for you. There are other books that do this much better. Go to the website for Chris Pye and check out his books on introductory carving, and check out the videotapes of Nora Hall on her website. These will give you much more of the very specific "how to" information on a sequence of specific graded projects.
Every really good carver that I know has used this book extensively. Most of the good carvers that I have talked to are mostly self taught. All speak "lovingly" about Hasluck's book. It is the greatest source of carving information and suggestions and illustrations you can find in one place. One of its "drawbacks" is that it is so encyclopedic, that one could not read it from cover to cover. This is more of a reference book that a carver refers to VERY often during his/her development.
Hasluck's coverage of Chip Carving is an example of how encyclopedic he is. Other authors on this subject only cover one of the many ways that it can be done. He covers many of them in great detail, and he doesn't denigrate any of them. I would buy this book only for the set of chip carving designs that it includes. The rest of the book would be "gravy" to me.
This book is to woodcarving what the Roman Coliseum is to sports arenas. It is a classic. I doubt it will ever be surpassed.
Hasluck's book is really for the person who has taken control of his own education in woodworking, and who wants to become VERY good. It is far too much for the casual person who wants to make one or two carvings with inexpensive tools. Of course, if you like to have impressive books on your coffee table, this would be a good one!!!!!
I am in awe of Paul N. Hasluck, the author of this wonderful book. Having the goal of writing a book of this scope and depth would be like having the goal of climbing Mt. Everest without oxygen. It would not be for the faint of heart. Virtually all serious modern books on woodcarving refer to this 1911 book. It is incomparable, and it is a real bargain. In my humble opinion, you'll get far more out of this book, which will probably cost you less than $20, than you will from a course on woodcarving that will cost you $1000.
BUY THE BOOK. You'll be glad you did.
An Historically Important Treasure Trove of Carving Guidance.......2007-07-08
This is one of those rare books written a long time ago (early 1900s) when craftsmen and artists actually made their livings working with their hands (after serving apprenticships under masters). Their art went on to be perfected during a time when such hand-craftsmanship was valued and rewarded albeit simply and honestly. The treasure trove of techniques and historical information in this book is the kind that I typically find only in old books like this one. 'Very applicable to todays professional or recreational woodworker/carver and to those simply interested in historical carved styles evident in todays antiques.

A Top-Rate Woodworking Guide.......2006-08-11
Langsner's book is one of the finest and most comprehensible woodworking guides on the market. Langsner writes with an enthusiasm and clarity that keeps the reading engaging, though the book is more interesting to readers with at least rudimentary experience with woodworking. Most importantly, he is not so vague that his projects could not be duplicated by an amateur, but he is not so detailed as to discourage innovation. He uses hand tools almost exclusively, so don't expect directions on using a table saw or drill press. The author has included chapters on making shaving horses, milking stools, tables, brooms, hay rakes, wooden spoons and harrows, and his wife has added chapters on basketry and other crafts. Pictures and illustrations are in black-and-white, but they are well-placed and nicely illustrate the components of the project, as well as the finished item. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in making wooden items with hand tools.

Book Description
With more than 2,500 illustrations, this is a do-it-yourselfer’s dream and a treasure trove of traditional information. It includes an overview of wood and how to choose the right type for specific projects, along with detailed descriptions of both common and unusual hand tools, with tips for their use. (Where else can you learn about the “Donkey’s-ear Shooting Block,” a screw vice, a grinding gouge, various handsaws, and augers?) Most importantly, there’s a wealth of knowledge on crafting almost anything using only hand tools: tables, desks, gates, a revolving bookcase, a linen chest, greenhouses, porches, birdhouses, and so much more. Useful for both amateurs and master craftsmen, this might be the most thorough guide to traditional woodworking available.

Book Description
Today it seems extraordinary that a nation the size of the United States could have been so profoundly affected by the minister of a little Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama. But at a turning point in American history, Martin Luther King, Jr., had an incalculable effect on the fabric of
daily life and the laws of the nation. As no other preacher in living memory and no politician since Lincoln, he transposed the themes of love, suffering, deliverance, and justice from the sacred shelter of the pulpit into the arena of public policy. He was the last great religious reformer in
America. How the man who always saw himself as "fundamentally a clergyman, a Baptist preacher" crafted his strategic vision and moved a nation to renewal is the subject of this remarkable new book.
The Preacher King investigates Martin Luther King Jr.'s, religious development from a precocious "PK" ("preacher's kid") in segregated Atlanta to the most influential American preacher and orator of the twentieth century. To give the most accurate and intimate portrait possible, author Richard
Lischer draws almost exclusively on King's unpublished sermons and speeches, as well as tape recordings, personal interviews, and even police surveillance reports. In King's published works, Lischer shows, King and his editors modified and polished his sermons in order to reach as wide an audience
as possible. By returning to the raw sources, Lischer recaptures King's real, African-American, preaching voice and, consequently, something of the real King himself. He shows how as the son, the grandson, and the great-grandson of preachers, King early on absorbed the poetic cadences, the
traditions, and the power of the pulpit. He traces King's coming of age from his rebellious teenage years (King once wrote that at thirteen he shocked his Sunday School class by "denying the bodily resurrection of Jesus") to his arrival in Montgomery, where he took on the role of "Brother Pastor" to
his flock during the year of ministry before he burst into national prominence. Lischer shows that King was as profoundly influenced by his fellow African-American preachers as he was by Gandhi and the philosophers, and tracks King's themes of brotherhood and justice from the set pieces of his
weekly sermons to his electrifying mass meeting speeches, demonstrations, and civil addresses. Lischer also reveals a later phase of King's development that few of his biographers or critics have addressed: the prophetic rage with which he condemned American religious and political hypocrisy. During
the last three years of his life, Lischer shows, King accused his country of genocide, warned of long hot summers in the ghettos, and called for a radical redistribution of wealth.
More than any other book, The Preacher King captures the crucial aspect of the identity of Martin Luther King, Jr. Human, complex, and passionate, here is a preacher who never gave up trying to shape a congregation of people that would be capable of redeeming the moral and political character of
the nation.

Excellent Evaluation of King's Preaching & Theology.......2002-01-01
One can easily see why this book was awarded the Outstanding Book of 1995 by the Religious Speech Communication Assoc., it is so well written. The research appears exhaustive, the writer is is firm touch with his subject matter, having poured over sermon manuscripts and listened to tape after tape, and conducted interview upon interview.
One is able to grasp the essence of King's preaching from this reading. Long suspecting that King comes out of the liberal element in the church, this confirmed that suspiscion. The theology and subsequent preaching is far from what my confession would maintain as Biblical. This is social gospel, theology not from heaven down, but earth up, trying to impose its agenda upon God, rather than letting His word and plan of salvation have its way.
While one can easily relate to the race problems and frustrations with an American that would not listen to the pleas, but an America that responded violently, there remains no cause to make the precious Gospel a political one. Jesus had attempts to preach such freedom from political oppression, but in each and every instance, He maintained the gospel at the level it is intended, spiritual.
King thus is out of sync with his namesake, Martin Luther, as well as the historic Christian church. The gospel is about the forgiveness of sins for the life everlasting. As the famous hymn sings: "What is the World to Me?"
This book is vibrant with the complexities of the background and influences on King's theology and preaching. Enjoyed it, yet sad that the title "preacher" is applied to such a false teacher of God's Word. To apply humanity's agenda above and beyond God's is the height of sin and rebellion.
