Book Description
'Nameless' had seen enough death in his years; spending his time watching someone drive to several funerals a day, funerals for people he didn't know, was more than he could take. And he had a non-professional problem of his own: his relationship with his wife, Kerry, had hit a wall and nothing he did got him over it and to the other side. There was one possibility, one thing he'd done (or not done), but knowing that didn't seem to help...Also not helping was the mood in the office. Tamara had something eating at her and Jake...well, Jake needed a case so he could stop thinking about what was happening with his son. It was a mournful time for everyone. Then the bits and pieces began to fall into place: The funerals James Troxell was attending were all for women who had died violently. Was he responsible? One woman thought so, thought Troxell had killed her sister, and her insistence was becoming a problem.Too many deaths, too many roads leading nowhere, too many crimes and secrets and fears were coming together as heavy as the fog rolling over the Bay. Too many answers were needed before there'd be sunshine again for anyone and the mourning could stop.

Excellence extends into 30th title in the series.......2007-05-16
Mourners is Bill Pronzini's thirtieth entry in the Nameless P.I. series which has a bust in the Pantheon of P.I.s. Nameless (now going by "Bill") is probably in his 60s, married to Kerry, and has an adopted daughter Emily who is growing up too fast. His awkward fatherly "sex talk" with her is a classic scene. Yes, Nameless as a family man reveals a gentler, funnier side -- the result of mellowing age. In this case, the affluent financial consultant James Troxell attends all funerals of women who've died violently (thus the book's title). Naturally Troxell's wife is alarmed and hires Nameless to find out just why this erratic behavior. Nameless soon uncovers a women's brutal murder and her distraught sister. The P.I. firm's other two workers, Tamara Corbin and Jake Runyon, inject the subplots of their personal lives. Tamara is getting over her old boyfriend. Runyon does much of the heavy detective work, and his sections give the story its gritty, hardboiled flavor. The prose remains lean and vivid. I've read enjoyed reading all the titles, and Mourners is as good as any.
Another fine Pronzine book........2007-01-04
I always look forward to the release of a new Pronzini book. This one did not disappoint.
Pronzini is a master author........2006-07-11
The "Nameless" agency team knows about separation and death. "Nameless" friend and partner committed suicide, Jake Runyon's wife died of cancer and Tamara's love has moved to Philadelphia. The agency has been hired, by his wife,to follow James Troxell. Rather than another woman, they find he is attending the funerals of women who have been raped and murdered. At a cemetery, Jake sees a young woman who reminds him of his late wife and who's sister was a victim. What is Troxell's connection to these victims?
Pronzini is such a fine writer. He takes, what could be, a basic mystery and layers it with text that deepens and enriches the plot. On the top level, this is a very good mystery. It leads the reader on a fascinating trail finding out exactly what the object character is up to. The sense of place, dialogue and suspense are all very well done. You become involved with all the characters and care about them. Even the minor, and somewhat unlikable, characters are ones you recognize. On a second level is the story of grief and mourning; it's many forms and the impact it has on various people's lives. I can't' say enough about this book. I am ready for the next in the series, and determinedly looking for the ones I'm missing. If you've not read this series, even with a few slight misses, start at the beginning and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!.
Mourners.......2006-04-23
"Mourners" is the 30th Nameless Detective novel by my favorite mystery novelist, Bill Pronzini. Lynn Troxell hires the agency to find out why her husband, James, ia acting strangely. Nameless finds out that Troxell is attending funerals of women who died violent deaths and putting flowers on the grave of Erin Dumont, a young woman who was raped and murdered. Is James Troxell a murderer or someone who witnessed Dumont's murder? Jake Runyon, the agency's operative also helps in the investigation. While Nameless works on the Troxell case, Runyon looks for Erin Dumont's murderer to help her sister Risa Niland whom he meets at Erin's grave. The title refers to many people and situations. Troxell is mourning people who died a violent death because he witnessed one as a child and probably also saw Erin Dumont's murder. Jake Runyon continues to mourn the death of his wife Colleen. Tamara Corbin, Nameless' partner, mourns the loss of her relationship with her long-time boyfriend, Horace. Risa Niland mourns her sister's death. Nameless continues to mourn the death of his former partner, Eberhardt. There is also a serious situation for Nameless' wife, Kerry. This situation will have to be dealt with in the next novel. I was a little diaappointed in "Nightcrawlers", but I didn't ralize why until I read "Mourners". In "Nightcrawlers", Tamara and Jake were the focal characters and Nameless played a minor role. In "Mourners" he is back as the central character and that makes this novel a return to form. "Mourners" is highly reecommended.
The Nameless Detective faces too many murders.......2006-04-19
Bill Pronzini's MOURNERS receives Broadway acting veteran Nick Sullivan's experienced way with drama to spice another 'Nameless Detective' novel of intrigue. Here troubles at home with his wife lead to more troubles at the office, where he sees too much death and attends too many funerals. His sudden revelation that his problems may be interconnected brings with it uncertain knowledge that he may indeed know the killer. All are excellent leisure and study choices.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Imagine if there was a counter earth, stuck in the 30s, where, basically, elves and trolls are real.
The coolest thing, however, is that Doc Savage is real, too. Except for the fact he is a Daoine Sidhe sorcerer, and has a higher mortality rate for his crew.
A down on his luck kickboxer and his girlfriend end up there, via a conjurer's circle, and a plot to change the magical rules of relations between the two worlds.
Oh, and the evil villain is Doc's son. This is an excellent homage, a good urban fantasy, and a bit of the Untouchables, to boot. As in, it don't end happily for everyone.
If you like the sound of that, easy to check out, it is a Baen Free Library book :-
Basically, imagine Doc Savage as an elf........2005-09-02
Stretching the boundaries of the term "Alternate History" in a sort of Thirty's pulp fiction - and Doc Savage in particular - way, is the book Doc Sidhe, by Aaron Allston.
The Elven (or "Fair") world is much like ours (the "Grim World"). In fact, it's history is a slightly twisted copy of ours, but "running" about sixty years behind (they're in the middle of a depression, had a major war fifteen years previous, and so on).
It's a fun book, and a nice homage to the Doc Savage series without being so much of a copy as to be a parody, or to be unable to stand on it's own.
Unusually good style.......2002-12-13
One factor not stressed in the other reviews of _Doc Sidhe_, is the quality of the writing. Since the genre is roughly "Doc Savage 1930s pulp", you wouldn't expect high quality prose. Wrong! This book delivers in style as well as content.
Fun reading--Harris Green is a good active character.......2002-05-30
Harris Green has hit bottom. His career as a professional kickboxer has gone nowhere, his girlfriend Gwen has dumped him, and he is as drunk as he can be. He comes up with the bright idea of talking Gwen into taking him back and arrives at her apartment just in time to see her being kidnapped. Harris's kickboxing might not be good enough to make him rich but its plenty to take on a couple of low-budget hoods with his girl. What he doesn't expect is that the kidnapping would leave him in a portal between our own world and the fair world--a place where magic works but where good and evil still battle.
The grim world of common humanity and the fair world are tied together and sometimes share people and ideas. But someone is tampering with the ties in an attempt to gain control of both worlds. Only Doc Sidhe and his Sidhe Foundation stand in their way. Harris joins up with a reluctant Doc when he finds that Gwen is one of the keys. Through a series of adventures, the two males learn to appreciate one another--but can they survive the showdown with the masters of evil magic?
Author Aaron Allston delivers a well written and fast paced fantasy adventure. With using both Irish/British legend and modern technology, Allston's parallel world construction is convincing and interesting. Harris is a fully motivated character with both flaws and goals. Harris drives the plot forward as his experience in both grim and fair worlds teaches him to be a full man.
Bringing back those good, old days.......2002-05-27
Reading "Doc Sidhe" really brought back that glowing feeling I haven't quite experienced since discovering old pulps and Fantasy as a twelve year old!
It's a light-hearted adventure, and a loving hommage to thirties pulp fiction. The gap between the nineties and a thirties setting is elegantly spanned by introducing a parallel world with a history loosely similar to ours, but lagging sixty years behind. Add technically sophisticated faeries, magic, super criminals bent on world domination --- and above all COLOURS. The vivid, colourful images is actually the most lasting impression after reading this entertaining little yarn.
Recommended for anyone who has ever been twelve and spent an entire Sunday in a dusty attic, lost in the radiant world of a yellowed pulp paperback.

Effinger's Zork.......2003-01-06
Well, it's a fun book to read. It's interesting and the humor is original. Actually, I suppose it's not original since it's taken from Zork. What bothers me is that the book is written too similar to the video game. The Great Underground Empire is divided into rooms separated by passageways that go in the usual cardinal directions. That makes it easier for video game players to play Zork but isn't the book supposed to be a bit more realistic? An underground kingdom shouldn't just be a bunch of rooms.
Fantastic read! Funny and quick paced........2002-03-12
Zork is one of those books you read every two or three years. It's highly enjoyable and it's a really easy read. Effinger did a good job on this one.
It's one of those books where you just keep turning the pages and before you know it your closing the back cover.
Really, if you want a refreshing fantasy novel, pick up Zork if you can find it. It's definately worth seeking out.
I read this book years ago, and I still remember it!.......1999-08-30
I bought this book a long time ago and would like to say it was very well done!
It's a journey through the great underground empire with intriguing characters and a good story-line (If you remember "Kill Troll with sword", you'll get an instant feel for this novel)!
I'd say pick this one up!
The Zork Chronicles: Beyond the Realm of Gaming.......1998-06-05
This is really a great book! For those of you who played the original DOS-based games, and those that played the truly original game on a NEC system with an 8" disk drive, you've got a good idea of what the book is about. It's not just another dull game book, though- it's an adventurous tale with the lure of such classics as The Hobbit. Forgo food until you finish this novel!
The Zork Chronicles: more than just the game........1998-01-22
The Zork Chronicles tells the tale of Glorian, the supernatural guide, as he assists Mirakles (a muscle-bound hero) in a quest to kill an evil wizard. The characters run around the Great Underground Empire, visiting places familiar to those who have played the Zork games by Infocom. The book, however, is much more than just a tale of the Empire hundreds of years after the "mysterious stranger" pillaged it. Zork Chronicles is a thinly veiled satire which plays upon the traditional roles assigned to characters in epic quests. The humor is subtle, sometimes sarcastic, and always enjoyable.

Interested in terrific food? Good. The first thing to do is buy this book. Then clear your calendar for the next 150 days. At a recipe a day, that's how long it will take to go from cover to cover. Your old life? Buy this book and kiss your old life goodbye. You won't regret it.
Most recipes that come out of high-end restaurant kitchens either aren't feasible in a home kitchen with home cooking skills, or they produce the kind of contrived food you wouldn't think to serve--the kind of food you go out to a restaurant to have served to you.
Jean-Georges Vongerichten, on the other hand, has moved in the direction of ultimate, minimal simplicity with heightened, surprising flavors as the payoff. His Steak with Red Wine Reduction and Carrot Purée, a popular restaurant dish, simply asks that the cook reduce a bottle of red wine to a single cup, stir in carrot purée, and use this as a sauce on a grilled steak. If that sounds like a gimmick, consider that his Manhattan restaurants--Jean-Georges, Vong, JoJo--receive lavish, stunning reviews. And it's all about the food. It's all about finding flavors and textures in your mouth that have never been there before.
In his life and career, Jean-Georges Vongerichten has moved from the foods of his home in France, across Asia, and finally to New York. When the food media was first beginning to talk about "fusion" cuisine, that all-too-often forced marriage of classic French and Asian cooking techniques and ingredients, Jean-Georges had already blown on by into a realm of his own making.
The results of his insight and energy are in this book. This is easy, elegant, flavorful food: Cold Tomato Soup with Cucumber and Cantaloupe, for example, or Salmon in a Cardamom Broth. You won't cook, eat, or taste anything the same old way once you tuck this book and this food experience under your wing. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
The cooking of Jean-Georges Vongerichten--sophisticated yet startlingly uncomplicated, hinting at French and Asian influences yet entirely original--has earned endless raves and accolades from every quarter. Why? Because Vongerichten has invented a culinary style that is highly creative and intensely flavorful but uses few ingredients and is remarkably simple.
Now, Jean-Georges, with award-winning coauthor Mark Bittman, brings this extraordinary cuisine to the home kitchen. There are no mile-long lists of instructions, the recipes use readily available ingredients, and many can be prepared in thirty minutes or less. Some of the recipes are taken directly from the kitchens of Vongerichten's three restaurants--Jean Georges, Vong, and JoJo. They not only sound simple but are simple--and irresistible. Fennel and Apple Salad with Juniper. 10-minute Green Gazpacho. Sautéed Chicken with Green Olives and Cilantro. Warm, Soft Chocolate Cake.
Jean-Georges's signature dishes are all here and made easy for the home cook. Scallops and Cauliflower with Caper-Raisin Sauce. Chicken Soup with Coconut Milk and Lemongrass. Salmon and Potato Crisps. Looking for simple, midweek fare? Try the quickly-put-together Savoy Slaw with Citrus, Ginger, and Mustard and the Dill-Stuffed Shrimp with Baked Lemon. For weekend entertaining, start with Beet and Ginger Salad, move on to the Gently Cooked Salmon with Mashed Potatoes, and dazzle your guests with the spectacular Apple Confit.
This long-awaited cookbook makes it easy to turn your kitchen into a four-star restaurant. All it takes is the inspired recipes and innovative techniques of Jean-Georges.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites.......2007-01-12
This is one of my all time favorite cookbooks. Jean-Georges Vongerichten has an amazing palate. Some of his cooking techniques and flavor combinations may be somewhat unusual but they are spot on. I've had this book for a number of years and have made many of the recipes. They are delicious.
my favorite cooking book.......2006-10-27
French native,I have a LOT of cooking book! , but this one is my favorite! You'll discover a lot a new "saveur"... Easy and fast recipes...
a winner.......2005-09-25
This is a terrific book of simply prepared sophisticated food. What prompted me to write was the review below concerning the apple confit. The recipe works. It's a ton of work, but if you follow directions (with adjustments, perhaps, for your own kitchen equipment) you get a desert that will impress any crowd. Most of the other recipes work just as well. When dealing with sophisticated food like this one needs to understand how to balance flavors and adjust technique. Probably not a book for beginners.
Cooking at home.......2005-08-26
Good cook book
For a home cook book I would have liked to have seen pmore photos of the finished product as most people are visual readers when it comes to cookbooks. We get excited about creating beutiful food like in the "picture"
recipes are great and really stretch the home refrigerator
be prepared to go out and grab a few things from the grocery store
Easy Cuisine at home.......2005-08-13
This book totally exceeded my expectations. I loved the fact that it makes French cuisine affordable for any cook, no matter what the level of practise you have had. The section on salads is particularly good, as it mixes very different ingredients, it even has some recipes inspired by Jean Georges experience of living in Asia so many years. So, what this book basically does is, simplify French cuisine in a really straightforward manner. The recipe for the warm melted chocolate cake is the best I have tried yet, totally foolproof. Buy this book if only for this recipe alone.

Agree with other reviewers.......2007-07-19
I've had this book for two years now and agree with many other reviewers. While the information in the book is helpful in a general sense, the cover picture and title could be changed and it could apply to any dog breed. Really nothing specific about German Shepherds.
German Sheherds.......2007-06-27
This is a very good book on the basics of owning a German Shepherd and has many helpful suggestions.
German Shepherds for Dummies.......2007-05-19
I'm new to dog ownership and I just adopted an 18-month old German Shepherd Dog from a local shelter. I wanted to learn as much as I could about dogs, specifically GSD's so I ordered this book. My observations are:
1) The book is informative and covers I wide range of topics, i.e., training, feeding, housebreaking, etc.
2) This book can be used as a reference guide so you don't need to read the entire book if you just need advice on specific issues.
3) This book was easy to read and I read the entire book in a few days.
4) Although I gained some knowledge from this book, many of the items covered I was able to find quite easily on the internet for free.
5) This book was inexpensive and available through Amazon with free shipping, which is how I got it.
Bottom line: If you don't mind spending a few dollars, this is a nice reference guide to have. Otherwise, you can find this information for free on the internet.
German Shepherds for Dummies.......2007-01-22
I liked this book because it gave me a lot of information on how to take care of a german shepherd and general techniques of what to do if they are sick, what to feed them, etc.
My two cents .......2006-10-12
I was surprised by all the negative feedback on the book. I really liked it. I know it's not pure, pure, GSD, but dogs are dogs, you're going to run into some overlap.
I wish I had bought the book, before I got my dog, but it was still helpful none the less. I got my GSD from German Shepherd Rescue. The book talks about like programs as well as breeders.
If you're thinking about getting a GSD, I'd recommend the book.

Learn to Knit.......2007-03-17
At first I thought the title 'Knitgrrl' was a misspelling, and I don't quite understand it. The instructions are clear, but the young person needs adult help. The choice of patterns is great. It would be good if it came with a set of needles and some yarn to start off the beginner knitter.
The Perfect Primer!!.......2007-01-13
Having just recently 'graduated' from making scarves and just about anything else square or rectangular that didn't require patterns or gauge concerns, i was feeling a bit intimidated and confused over some knitting basics. i have a generous assortment of knitting books, and some are more helpful than others. this is one of the best ones.
i find these instructions to be extremely friendly and clearly expressed. the pictures are clear and accurate. and finally a book that shows and describes that mysterious process of weaving in ends!! this book covers all the basics - yarn fibers, yarn labels, gauge, color chart, needles, etc. and includes a cute and fun 'quiz' which i got a kick out of.
there are great tips throughout the book, colorful photos of the patterns, cute drawings, a nice section on felting (fulling), and even a wonderful recipe for homemade hand salve!
the patterns are defined well by the subtitle of the book "fun and funky". it could be argued that they may be most appealing to the younger crowd, but i think a beginner knitter (or a former knitter in need of a refresher course) would be pleased with the selection. who couldn't use a hat, handbag, scarf/stole, or pair of leg warmers? on top of that and several other items, there's a cool pattern for 'text messaging mittens' that feature thumb panels you can flip off. and dont forget your cat! - you can whip up some cat toys using the adorable wonton and eggroll patterns.
this is a fun book offering very helpful instructions for your foundation in knitting. you will find the cool, beginner-friendly patterns will not only help you learn the basics, but you will also find that they become items that you will use for yourself or as gifts for friends/family/felines.
happy knitting!
Knitting fun.......2006-11-10
Thoroughly enjoyed the layout and excellent photos of the projects and the other interesting items included in the book
Winter Knitting.......2006-05-30
Shannon Okey is a designer and loves knitting. She features yarns you can find in stores or online and has plenty of resources for new knitters. Fun items in this book include a kitty dim sum (fill with cat nip) for your cats and ideas for knitting parties. Each book stands alone with all the information you need to get started. So, whether you start with the first or second book, there is enough information to finish all the projects.
For winter, there are unique text-messaging mittens that will be appreciated by anyone who loves to be outdoors and answering their phone in the cold. Also helpful for iPods and would be a great gift along with the music player cozy that works as ear muffs and a CD holder.
Love to ice skate? There is a pattern for leg warmers complete with embroidery, French knot and straight stitch. This book also includes a recipe for homemade hand cream. Knitgrrl has 15 fun projects to try and seems to focus on winter hats, scarves and purses. Knitgrrl 2 has a fun summer theme. Both seem essential!
~The Rebecca Review
Fun!.......2006-02-07
Shannon Okey, Knitgrrl (Watson-Guptill, 2005)
I have to admit, the whole riot grrl thing bugged me. Not because of what they stood for, which was admirable enough, but because of the blatant abuse of the English language. So the title Knitgrrl pretty much prejudiced me before I'd cracked the cover. Once I did, though, the hesitation vanished pretty quickly.
This is an easy-to-follow, fast read that takes the reader through the basics of knitting (probably a bit too fast for a complete neophyte, but perfect for someone like me, who knitted decades ago and needs a quick refresher course), then turns said reader loose into fifteen projects ranging from the most basic to things that will be pieces of cake for experienced knitters, but will challenge those who are still on the novice level. A very good book both for beginners and for those getting back into knitting after a long time away. *** ½

Book Description
Muhammad Ali is one of the most remarkable personalities of our time and the greatest sportsman to ever walk the earth. To honor this living legend, TASCHEN has created a work that is both epic in scale and just as unique and vibrant as the man himself. It is more than appropriate that a worthy tribute to his life would reflect the scale of his achievements, and "GOAT - Greatest of All Time" proves itself up to the task.
Four years in the making, and the most comprehensive look at Ali to date, "GOAT" tips the scales at 34 kgs (75 lbs) and is 50 cm x 50 cm (20" x 20") in size. 800 pages of archival and original photographs, graphic artwork and articles and essays - many of them previously unpublished - chronicle six decades of his life in stunning detail. To cap it all, the project takes place with the participation of Ali himself and those members of his inner circle who have been closest to him over the years: from managers and key ringside cornermen to friends, family and children; from spiritual and other advisers to broadcasters, essayists and journalists.
No stone has been left unturned in telling this remarkable story: the book features written contributions from hundreds of writers and photographers, as well as over 3,000 photographs of Ali's dazzling life. Plus Ali's own insights, writings and drawings, and reproductions of fight posters and classic memorabilia.
In addition, new work - commissioned from artist Jeff Koons - gives the Ali mythology a twenty-first-century edge and an entirely contemporary context. "GOAT" will come in two versions: the (Champ's Edition), limited to the first 1,000 copies and featuring a specially-commissioned congenial multiple by Jeff Koons as well as four silver gelatin prints by Howard L. Bingham, signed by the photographer and Ali himself. The remaining 9,000 copies come with a photo-litho made by Jeff Koons. All 10,000 copies are individually signed by Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons.
Customer Reviews:
SKIP THIS AND BUY SOUL OF A BUTTERFLY OR FIND HAUSER'S MUHAMMED ALI HIS LIFE AND TIMES.......2006-09-14
If you love Ali get his own SOul of A Buterfly or the other bio - if you can find it, as it really gest into the soul of this great man, and into his depp and abiding faith, which is a place no one any longer goes.
Of course if any of the three thousand or twelve thousand DO get to Ali and his family it will make up in a SMALL way for all the millions managers and damagers stole form him, and will get distributed to good working charitable and humanitarian organizations that actually help people, as Ali gives it all away to those in need, unless Bush has declared him officially a funder of bad and dubious causes
so if it goes to Ali, live large y'all
sting like a bee
G.R.O.A.T. (Greatest Review of All Time).......2006-02-03
First things first: This book has got talent. It might have once weighed in at a measily 40 pounds (500 pages), but has built up its strength and is now a strong contender. Few could question the book's power when it overcame several best sellers, rising up the non-fiction ranks like a soaring upper cut to truly punish George Foreman's jaw. The only question remaining for the experts is this: Will this book have what it takes to take on in a heavy weight bout its subject ?
Pretty amazing book.......2005-01-24
I had a chance to check out this book at the Tattered Cover of Denver
It is MASSIVE and HUGE
The photographs inside are amazing! It definitely attracts the non-reader, and visual lover, within all of us
The price is VERY steep - only purchase if you're a REALLY big fan
Otherwise, I at least suggest that you find a copy, just to see what a really huge book, about a pretty big dude, is like ----- the book is a feat, in itself - just like Muhammad Ali
Ali as object of conspicuous consumption.......2004-07-21
I revere Ali. I had the honor of meeting him for an author appearance for a previous photo essay book when I worked for a New York-based publisher. The Champion Edition at $10,000 and the cheaper edition at $3000 are antithetical to who the man is, or has been. He has always been a man of the people, and not a sycophant for the wealthy who buy books like they buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway. If there was any information about proceeds from the sale of the books benefitting someone other than the publishers and authors I would feel differently. As it is, this is just an opportunity for those who'd have sent him to jail for avoiding the draft to own him. I'd wager that they care less about what the man stands for than that they can now own something their friends can't afford. If you love Ali and have $3000 or $10,000 to spend, give to a charity in his name.
Ten Stars!.......2004-05-09
"Goat: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali" is seventy-five pounds of the finest photos, essays and articles on the man himself. The packaging is great, with a box to protect the cover from shelf wear.
Nearly every photograph in this huge book is a work of art, many of which have never before been seen. The composition and details of the photographs are amazing. I found myself staring at them for hours.
The hefty price will scare off many, but it really is worth it. Don't forget that it comes autographed by Ali and Jeff Koons. (Meaning it will only go up in value.)
Overall, this beautiful book really is the ultimate tribute. It rates at least ten stars!
