Hit the spot for me.......2006-07-22
These books are not to everyone's taste, but they hit the spot with me. This is a mystery/detective series by Selma Eichler. The titles start with "Murder Can........" The protaganist, Desiree Shapiro, is a private detective in Manhattan. She is definitely beyond middle age, but not old. She dyes her hair red and is quite overweight and out of shape, but not actually obese. She and all the other people in the books have interesting and well drawn personalities.
Having read one book, I bought the entire series, arranged them in chronological order and read them all. Not one disappointment in the lot. Although having read the entire series at once, I could by the end of the series generally spot the telltale clue, the books never lost their interest because the people seem so real.
Where's the Resolution?.......2006-06-20
This book was definitely not as good as the others in the series.
The mystery seemed to be almost secondary to Desiree's relationship with Nick. Even Ellen's marriage, which has been built up for so many books, was just a passing chapter with very little detail or information. And while there was a whodunnit, that's all there was -- Desiree figured things out pretty much out of nowhere, but she never confronted the murderer and she never wrapped up the case. She didn't even confirm that this is indeed what happened and that this was actually the person who did it. I was very disappointed in the way things ended -- I actually had to look twice to make sure I hadn't missed a chapter.
I hope this author isn't moving this series on to where Desiree's personal life is more prominent than her cases. There are enough of those types of series out there.
Not her best book.......2006-02-20
I mark my calendar so that I never forget to buy Desiree Shapiro's latest caper. This one was a disappointment.
I spotted THE clue (and, therefore, the answer and the killer) immediately. Even so, I enjoyed the travels Desiree (one of my favorite sleuths) must take to figure out what was so obvious to me.
The ending was disappointing as well. Not only was there no dramatic confrontation at the end, Eichler left several smaller plot points hanging.
Still, I don't regret buying and reading the book. Eichler's dialogue is always realistic with just the right amount of wit and her characters are fleshed out (especially our full-figured lead). It's just, in this book at least, Desiree's real life takes center stage while her professional life is more background material.
clever investigative tale.......2006-02-08
On the flight back from Minneapolis to La Guardia, private investigator Desiree Shapiro meets attorney Ben Berlin. Desiree was returning from her friend's wedding while Ben was heading to the funeral of his beloved Aunt Bessie Herman. The grieving Ben mentions that she fell down a set of stairs in her home breaking her neck.
Over a week later Ben calls Desiree to hire her to investigate the death of his aunt, whom he believes was murdered. He explains that NYPD Sergeant Spence stated that elderly women should not wear high heels; Ben says his aunt no longer wore high heels since breaking an ankle last year. Happy to have a paying client, Desiree questions the victim's younger son Joel, his fiancée Frankie, and his older brother Donnie. She touches base with Spence and treks across the Hudson to Aubrey, New Jersey where realtor Cliff Seymour detested the fact that Bessie refused to sell him some choice land there. Finally she discusses the situation with a long term friend of Bessie. As she digs deeper, Desiree agrees homicide occurred, but the killer hides amidst friends, family, and business cronies of the septuagenarian victim.
Readers will agree that chance enabled Desiree and Ben to fly to New York together, but it was his comment that she seemed too soft and feminine to be a PI as opposed to overweight that leads to their discussion on the plane and the case (the fee helped). The investigation is clever as Desiree ponders who might kill to obtain Aunt Bessie's assets even as she understands that as time vanishes, solving the case becomes increasingly problematic. With her personal life having a few spins too, fans will enjoy the latest Manhattan caper of Bloomingdale's finest sleuth.

Series is picking up nicely.......2002-04-09
After the terrible outing by Carl Bowen's first book in the series, "Vampire", Gherbod Fleming introduces us -- finally -- to the world of the hunters. I enjoyed his more human side of the hunters, showing the flaws and inner demons of each person. My only problem is the horrific copy editing done by Melissa Thorpe... spelling, grammar, etc. If she would have simply read through the manuscript, the problems are obvious and easy to fix. The publisher, White Wolf, needs to hire someone else. But definitely keep Gherbod around.
A Missed Opportunity.......2001-03-30
After promising myself not to follow this series after my review of the fist volume "Vampire," I broke down and ordered this, the next in the series. Why? I have become a fan of Gherbod Fleming and decided that, if anyone could rescue this series from a weak start, Fleming could.
I have no idea who Fleming really is. He has chosen as pseudonym the name of one of a pair of 11th century Gherbods one of who was married to queen Mathilde, or was the first Earl of Chester or was the brother-in-law of William de Warren. I have no idea what this has to do with vampires, but apparently it has a lot to do with the British royal line, which was getting a bit complex in those days. Make of it what you will.
In any case, "Judge" tells the story of a not particularly appealing automotive executive, Douglas Sands, who is having an affair and planning to leave his wife, who he blames for the death of his son (after all, she was the one who wanted the swimming pool). He is extraordinarily self-indulgent, headstrong, pays no attention to anyone's advice, and in no way resembles a hero. Rather, he is the typical corporate middle manager who you would expect to find reading 'The 60 Minute Sexist.'
Sands suddenly discovers that he can see the supernatural and realizes that his mistress is being stalked by a 'something.' In the process of finding out what it was Sands leaps naked from a third story window in pursuit and winds up in the hospital with his secret completely blown. Did I mention that Sands is eternally injuring himself? He winds up living at the house of Albert Tinsley, who is quite a bit more sympathetic. It turns out that Douglas, like Albert, is a 'hunter,' who has special skills for taking out the supernaturally evil.
Douglas meets several more hunters, who have been protecting his ex-wife and ex-mistress while Sands falls out of windows and perpetually manages to injure himself. As the action builds, Douglas manages, by sheer thoughtlessness, to cause the deaths of two fellow hunters and the injury of a third. All in the effort to take out a single vampire. You can't really blame just Douglas, it turns out that this is the group's first vampire. And they lack any sense of teamwork. If these guys don't get a lot better at 'hunting' they will never last until Volume 6.
If anything makes this book work it is Fleming's writing. He manages to keep up a good pace and some chilling moments. His dialog is crisp and several of the characters are believable. He is clearly the best writer in White Wolf's stable. What White Wolf and Fleming failed to notice is that much of the plot would be comic if it wasn't so ponderously serious. Come to think of it, Volume 1 also has this same problem with pretentious seriousness. If only they had chosen to exploit this vein, this could have been an unusual and inventive book instead of yet another piece of OK vampire fiction.
Now that I've inadvertently offended every goth fan in the universe, I'm prepared for a shower of 'not helpfuls.' But honestly, guys, with so much good, creative materials coming out of goth culture you have to draw a line somewhere. Just because vampires tend to be pompous doesn't mean that vampire stories can be funny and horrifying at the same time. This is more of a challenge for an author, but I believe Fleming is up to it.
Oooh... Spooky!.......2001-03-13
As the first book in the Hunter series that actually deals with Hunters, this book does a great job of showing what it must be like for the poor mortals in a World of Darkness. The Hunters are appropriately mystified, horrified and downright nerve-wracked by the world they thought they knew being turned upside-down by the invasion of the supernatural. The two elements I loved most about the book were: 1) It's scary! Then again, I slept with the light on for a week after reading Salem's Lot, so maybe I've got different standards.... But, I really thought Fleming did a good job of making this spooky. 2) Introducing aspects of the supernatural other than vampires. This book also deals with wraiths and the walking dead. And did I mention it's spooky?
All in all, I thought this was a great book and it was great to see the flip side of WoD---take away the blase attitude of 'I'm a vampire, yeah' and politicking and you see what it's like to be an ordinary human in a really scary world.
In regards to the other reviewer who said this has no tie to the first book, that's not entirely true. All of the Hunters' stories as to wierdness they've experienced come from things which happened in the first novel.
A Gritty Look at Those That Would Face the Darkness.......2001-03-10
I have been pretty down on White Wolf fiction; while there have been a few good novels, I consider most only slightly more interesting to read than the owner's manual of my vacuum cleaner. Some of the Vampire clan novels have been especially bad, and turned me off of to fiction based in the World of Darkness for a long time. _Predator and Prey: Judge_ was going to be my final attempt at such fiction - a negative impression being the final vote needed to send me away from the series forever.
But _Predator and Prey: Judge_ is GOOD. More than good; one of the best World of Darkness novels I've ever read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this is one of the most interesting and enjoyable books that I've read in months, if not years. I started reading it at bedtime and couldn't put it down until after 6:30 AM in the morning. High praise, considering some of the recent books by "name" authors I've read that put me to sleep in 15 minutes.
_Predator and Prey: Judge_ is about a Hunter - a human that has recently discovered that the undead walk among the living. This "Hunter," however, is just an ordinary man that doesn't necessarily WANT to know about or "hunt" the supernatural. A lot of the conflict in the novel centers around this aspect: What would a flawed, middle-aged man be able to do against the undead? Would he even care if they didn't directly affect him? What would such knowledge do to a person's life and loved ones? These questions and others get answered throughout the course of the novel in a realistic way - jumping out a third floor window while battling one of these supernatural monsters almost kills him, for instance. There are other subplots throughout the book, of course - other supernatural creatures are met and new Hunters found - and most work together to make it extremely interesting. Still, there are a few flaws and "over the top" experiences, but the majority of the book is excellent (and sometimes extremely creepy). In short, it is a great read!
My first Hunter Story.......2001-01-29
This book has the first story I ever read about Hunters. The Hunteres are introduced smoothly in the book and it does a great job of showing their human side. It is starts slow and catches up with excitment as the main character realizes something is wrong with him. Definately recommended, but unfortunately the book has no previous ties what so ever to Predator and Prey: Vampire. I hope the author plans to eventually make a bigger theme from this six book series.

Book Description
Anne Dimock grew up in a household where, she notes, "A dearth of good pie was a hardship I never encountered, never knew must be borne up by most folk." When she realized that the decline of the American pie civilization might be a harbinger of even deeper cultural problems, Anne became a woman on a mission to save pie from extinction.
Dimock shares her thoughts on the Zen of making pie crust, the politics of pie, judging a man's character according to his pie protocol, state fair pie competitions, the kinship between pie and baseball, and the search for edible pie at roadside diners.
Folksy and full of humor, Humble Pie is more than just an evocative journey through a life lived in pie. It is a culinary manifesto for a pie renaissance, inviting readers to take up their rolling pins and revive an endangered slice of American culture. Dimock advises us all to "Roll back the apprehension, the doubt, and enter the childlike state of grace where all things are possible and anything lost can be found again. The pie you seek resides not only in memory and imagination-your next piece of pie begins right here."

Pie Makers Unite!.......2006-01-16
As a life-long Pie Maker (I'm 58 and learned how to make pies from my German grandmother when I was 9 years old), I couldn't believe my eyes when my husband gave me this book for my most recent birthday. In fact, I read it cover to cover and then baked an apricot pie! While I found the actual information quite useful (such as the treatise about different apples), it was the way Anne Dimock presents the philosophical, even spiritual, aspects of being a Pie Maker that really resonated with me. This is not just a cook book; it's a book that celebrates all things handmade, genuine, created through love and industry. We who are Pie Makers know what it means to mix together a dough that "feels" right; put together an interesting filling (I love apples and blackberries, and I'm "famous" among my husband's friends for my apricot pie), dot it generously with butter and place the top crust. And then the magic of opening the oven and being able to tell if the pie is done by the amount of bubbly juiciness. Yes, we Pie Makers need to celebrate our good fortune in having a book that now puts all our feelings and joys of making pies into words. If you're a Pie Maker, make this book the next one you read, preferably with a piece of your own delicious pie! Oh, and one more thing -- be sure and pass on your Pie Maker knowledge. My 6-year old grandson doesn't think it's a complete visit with "Grammie" unless we make a pie together. He has a couple of little pie pans (similar to the ones my grandmother gave me) so that he can make his very own pie and not have to share it with his 2 year-old sister!. I'll be reading Humble Pie to him on his next visit! -- Louise Miracle (Bloomington, IN)
Dimock on Pie: Musings to Amuse and Delight.......2005-11-30
Anne Dimock has written a delightful exercise on the importance of everyday life, and the foods that define much of its pleasure. While pie (mainly apple) forms its core, she writes affectionately and with deft assurance of
lives lost and loves gained and generations passed and present. Her discursive essay on apple varieties is especially interesting, as well as her view of crust and the somewhat frightening use of pie-cutting methods as a Rorschach test of personality types in men. A great book for the holidays!
Long Live the Queen of Pies!.......2005-09-30
This book warms the heart and brings a smile to those who enjoy eating a good apple pie, or any pie for that matter. It's a must read for all who sit in awe of those who heed their calling to make these homemade masterpieces. The book won't prompt you to go out and buy pie .... it will elevate you to want to try to make one on your own!

A hands–on guide to natural energy healing for pets from a leading animal healer and communicator.
Customer Reviews:
Best Of Wisdom.......2007-08-25
This is the best empathic book for fellow empaths and pet lovers. As a empathy like my self, she is full of great wisdom, and made her book easy to understand for psychic and pet lovers. I rate #1 on the healing practice, and excellent for beginners of being healers.
Neither new ideas nor depth on the subject.......2007-03-27
Anyone who knows anything about energy healing will find nothing new, but only a rehash of common ideas on the subject. Shifting the focus from humans to animals is intuitive and minimal, and does not require the superficial treatment offered by this book. Way too much inessential fluffy filler. I returned the book to Amazon with the reason, "Did not live up to expectations."
This was Wonderful!.......2007-03-13
This was wonderful! This lady knows her stuff. I have her music cd's on healing for pets and animals-they are wonderful, too!
Uniquely comprehensive.......2007-03-05
I wish I could give this more then 5 stars. It is the most comprehensive book I've read for hands-on healing for animals. The author doesn't just offer hand placements but provides a wealth of information on other aspects that effect the pet's overall well being. The book covers scientific evidence of healing, explains auras and chakras, environmental impacts, animal communication - including a meditation for developing the ability, properties for working with crystal energy, and astrological signs that influence your pet. The last chapter discusses complementary therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy, and chiropractic.
The only challenge I have is in the beginning of the book the author seems to oversimplify the ability for anyone to provide hands-on healing. I do believe we all have the innate ability to channel universal energy, but I believe a lot of us have "forgotten" who we are and our natural abilities. Later in the text the author does acknowledge it may take years for an individual to develop this inherent ability. Personally I recommend taking a class, whether it is Reiki, TT, HT, or any other energy healing modality if you're interested in hands on healing.
A must read if you want to learn healing for animals........2007-01-04
I have read many books on healing, but this one is a winner, not only for beginners but for experienced healers.
When you start out learning to heal it can be a confusing time, but this book puts you on the right track immediately with simple and easy to understand methods.
If you love animals this book also can be a great source of comfort to be able to apply these methods that are taught in such simple terms to a loved animal.

In The Biz.......2000-11-24
As a (small time) decorator of Night-clubs in England, this book has proved itself valuble when inspiration has been low. There is a good cross section of examples shown from across the world, with many well printed colour photos. The problem with decorating clubs (by that I mean paint effects and murals), is that whats "in" changes so frequently that this book will soon be out of date as a source of reference, alternatively if its a nice coffee table book with pictures of fantasy interiours thet you want, then well I've seen worse.

Book Description
When Joe Louis (1914-1981) knocked out the German boxer Max Schmeling in 1938 in two minutes and four seconds, the entire nation-black and white-celebrated the "fight of the century" as a victory of the United States against the ominous tide of Nazism. Never had an African-American received such universal praise across racial lines. Heavyweight champion for a record twelve years from 1937 to 1949, Louis opened the doors for such future black athletes as Jackie Robinson, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Muhammad Ali. Joe Louis depicts the prizefighter's life, and the times in which he lived, from his childhood in a sharecropper's cabin in Alabama and his formative years in Detroit, to his legendary career, his service in the Army, his stint as a professional wrestler after retiring from boxing in 1951, and his professional demise as an official greeter for a Las Vegas casino. Along the way, Richard Bak compassionately, yet evenhandedly, details Louis's private vices: incessant womanizing, reckless spending habits, massive debts to the IRS, and drug abuse. Filled with over one hundred photographs, including twenty-two in color, Joe Louis is the most comprehensive portrait yet written of one of the greatest African-American heroes who used his fists figuratively-and literally-to fight racism.
Customer Reviews:
The Brown Bomber.......2006-08-06
Richard Bak was born and raised in Detroit - the town where Joe Louis learned the sporting craft of boxing. He does a very good job in his biography of Joe Louis to capture the socio-political context of the events in the life of Joe Louis and to demonstrate how that context affected the decisions and actions of Joe Louis in his life and his boxing career.
After 3 pages of acknowledgments and a prologue are 12 chapters: chapter 1) From `Bama to Black Bottom; chapter 2) A Punch in Either Hand; chapter 3) The Long Shadow of Papa Jack; chapter 4) No Ordinary Joe; chapter 5) Tan Tarzan, Black Messiah; chapter 6) Champion of All, Save One; chapter 7) Knocking Out Hitler; chapter 8) Bummin'; chapter 9) On God's Side; chapter 10) Cruel Twilight; chapter 11) No Joe Louis, No Jackie Robinson; and chapter 12) Your Whole Life is Your Funeral. These chapters are followed by a 3-paged appendix of Joe's Prize Fighting Ring Record, a 5-paged bibliography, and a 9-paged index. Altogether there are 320 pages between the covers with 58 photos.
In chapter 1, we learn that Joe Louis was born Joe Louis Barrow in the desegregated State of Alabama. His stepfather relocated Joe and his family to the racist city of Detroit but with integrated schools where Ford was hiring and paying good wages. Joe had a speech impediment, was bored with schoolwork, but loved learning by doing - especially flag duty.
In chapter 2, Joe had a percipient teacher who recommended that Joe enroll at vocational school where he could learn skills according to Joe's kinesthetic learning style. He also took up amateur boxing and eventually became the national AAU and Golden Gloves national champion. He compiled an amateur record of 50 wins (43 by knockout) and 4 losses.
In chapter 3, Joe made the decision to become a prize fighter. When boxing for money, rules are not followed as they are in amateur boxing. So flagrant are the fixes and rules violations that it's best not to refer to prize fighting as boxing. Bak tells us about Jack Johnson and how he perfected his boxing craft while in jail for illegally prizefighting with his cellmate who had just knocked him out. Bak says that after Johnson became heavyweight champion of the world that he "inflamed public opinion with his open dalliances with women, including his second wife"(p53). Joe Louis's publicists gave Joe an opposite spin - "a God-fearing, Bible-reading, clean-living young man . . . neither a showoff nor a dummy" (p75).
In chapter 4, Joe has his first prizefight on the 4th of July, 1934. One week later, Joe fought his second fight. Eventually, Joe caught the attention of Jewish-American fight promoter Mike Jacobs. Joe said in his autobiography - "If it wasn't for Mike Jacobs I would never have got to be champion" (p87). In this chapter, Joe demolished the Italian giant Primo Carnera at the time when Mussolini had just invaded the starving land of Ethiopia while waving white superiority. Joe Louis gave Mussolini a black eye.
Chapter 5 explains how "Joe's handlers understood that it was crucial to develop and maintain a favorable public image in order to win acceptance by white America" (p110).
In chapter 6, we learn that German fighter Max Schmeling was making a comeback and that Hitler did not want the heavyweight champion - Jewish-American Max Baer, fighting Schmeling and possibly giving Hiter and his theory of white supremacy a black eye like Mussolini suffered when Joe Louis knocked out Primo Carnera. Instead, Schmeling fought Joe Louis. Schmeling was confident that he could defeat Louis, saying "I see something" - he saw how Joe dropped his left after a jab and was subsequently open for a right cross. In their fight, Schmeling dropped Joe several times before delivering the knockout. Fight announcers downplayed any notions of white supremacy but many in the audience were giving voice to it. Back in Germany, Hitler and his Nazis were ecstatic. Schmeling was not allowed by U.S. boxing officials to fight for the heavyweight title at that time. Meanwhile Joe bounced back quickly and eventually knocked out Braddock to become the heavyweight champion of the world.
In chapter 7, Joe had his rematch with Schmeling where he knocked him out in the first round after hitting him so hard to the body that he squealed like a pig. Hitler was humiliated and Joe became America's boxing patriot.
In chapter 8, Joe fought a series of `bums'. In 1936, he paused to go to Hollywood to make a boxing film for the Jewish-American cartel called "Spirit of Youth". Here Bak reveals Joe's penchant for white women and the collusion among the black media to hide his indiscretions from the white public.
In chapter 9, Bak makes short shrift of the Louis-Conn fight. And he doesn't say a word about FDR provoking the Japanese to retaliate, which they did at Pearl Harbor. Nor does he say that Winston Churchill came up with the Pearl Harbor plan in order to suck America back into the second part of the World War. Americans were opposed to making the mistake they had made in the first part of the World War, which was to ignore Thomas Jefferson's maxim of "peace and friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none". But after FDR allowed the Japanese to hit U.S. naval ships at Pearl Harbor, Americans went war crazy. Joe said "I was mad, I was furious, you name it" (p203). Joe and Billy Conn joined the Army as enlisted, while non-Irish white boxers were made officers. Joe and Billy gave boxing exhibitions while Joe noted Billy's weaknesses for a future rematch after the war.
The remaining chapters tell a tragic story of Joe's fight with the IRS. It's a story where he continually gets pummeled with interest and penalties until he marries Martha Malone Jefferson, California's first black female lawyer, and she gets the IRS to stop hounding him although they never erased the debt. And after he died, the government buried his body in their cemetery at Arlington.
There is also the story of how Joe panicked after the mob killed his friend Sonny Liston. Bak doesn't tell us that Joe had to hide out in a Denver psychiatric hospital in order to be safe from the mob, while his wife convinced the mob that his "paranoid delusions" would discredit him if he ever repeated anything that Liston had told him.
In short, Bak did a great job dealing with a symbol of black power, a symbol of nationalism, and a man with many weaknesses outside of the ring. I am humbled to review this.
Excellent portrayal of JL's life and times.......1999-04-29
This is an outstanding book. It's enlightening entertaining and very enjoyable. JL's life from early childhood in Alabama to his youth in Detroit is clearly written. His amateur career is well documented as are all his professional fights. His boxing coterie and family life are also well drawn. I didn't know much about JL before reading this book, but I came away liking him very much and obviously respecting his boxing abilities. Mr. Bak has written an instructive and very enlightening book.
