Book Description
A midwife working in the tenements of turn-of-the-last-century New York, Sarah Brandt is summoned by the wealthy Lintons to confirm their worst fear: their teenaged daughter is with child. It's a mystery, however, since the young woman-mentally still a child herself-is never left alone.
With the help of her friend Detective Sergeant Malloy, Sarah vows to crack this delicate case, especially since suspicion is on those close to the Lintons. Then, when one of the suspects is poisoned, Sarah knows she must uncover the truth before more lives are ruined.

Historical Mystery with All the Right Stuff.......2007-08-25
When a reader buys a historical mystery, she hopes for balance: good writing, an exciting plot, characters she can care about, and a setting that comes alive, giving details about life in another era. All this comes together in MURDER ON LENOX HILL, a Gaslight Mystery by Victoria Thompson.
The reader is drawn to Sarah Brandt and cheers for Frank Malloy. We want to know how they'll get on and what they'll do next. The mystery is not secondary to their deepening relationship but woven into it, so that their actions bring them closer to a solution and closer to each other as well. Although Sarah is determined and Frank is protective, they are believably so within the structure of the society they inhabit. It is especially laudable that Sarah does nothing the reader can't imagine her doing, avoiding the "don't go down in the basement" moment so common to some mystery protagonists. She is as practical as a person in her situation would have to be, which is refreshing.
All in all, this book is satisfying on every level, giving clues, history, and great characters that the reader will want to get to know better.
Seventh entry in Gaslight Mystery another hit.......2006-09-29
Murder on Lenox Hill by Victoria Thompson is the seventh entry in the Gaslight Mystery series starring Sarah Brandt, a New York midwife and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. This book was probably the most disturbing book in the series so far. The wealthy Linton family asks Sarah to examine their 17-year-old daughter when they suspect that she's pregnant. The girl is mentally disabled and always supervised, so the mystery of who the father is haunts the family. Sarah and Frank work together to track down the rapist. Thompson does a wonderful job of building the story while juggling the long-arcing subplots that have been playing out since the first book.
Subtle and Fascinating Period Details.......2006-07-20
This is an excellent series, very readable, but what I love most are the period details. The author gives the reader insights into social protocol of the day, which is actually fascinating. (The books are set in turn-of-the-century NYC.) We find out the rules of courtship, of "calling" on friends and acquaintances, and how one would go about snubbing another. It makes for much more interesting than books in which characters rip each others' clothes off immediately or tell each other off with numerous f-bombs. What's particularly impressive is the fact that the author manages to do this without being pedantic. One character, Frank Malloy, comes from an Irish immigrant background and, like most readers, doesn't know these rules - so the explanations are woven in seamlessly.
My second gaslight mystery.......2006-06-26
I found this author by accident and I sure am glad I did. Her books are wonderful!
I started toward the end of the series.(The first gaslight book I read was Murder on Marble Row)
You will immediately like the two main characters-Sarah and Frank. The books are historical/suspense genre. In Murder on Lenox Hill, Sarah's midwife services are called upon by the parents of a young girl, Grace, who mentally is still a child. She is never out of her parent's sight. So how could this have happened? The parents have lots of suspects including members of their Church. Even the minister of their Church is suspect. The minister dies during a Sunday service after drinking wine from the chalice. Who could have laced the wine? There are several suspects and confessions but "whodunnit?" And who is the father of Grace's baby? The ending may surprise you, but I have to admit, I guessed the ending.
I'm looking forward to going back and reading the earlier books in this series, although I found that the two books I read stand alone.
A very good book in a well done series........2006-02-03
Ms. Thompson does a wonderful job of presenting turn of the century life and the social structure of the time. At the same time, the story resonates with incidents in today's news. Her characters are well developed, even if one has not read the previous books in this series. You feel the emotions of the characters and the situations are realistically handled. There are a couple of twists that enhance the story, but the characters are the main focus. I have only two criticisms: the dust cover gives away way too much of the story-not the author's fault; and I'd like to see Sarah and Frank's relationship progress, but the author is handling it in a way very appropriate to the period.

My New Favorite Author!.......2006-05-07
A Rumor of Gems is a great new fantasy novel by an excellent writer. I can't get enough of this book. Like most people, I didn't want it to end. I felt as if I have been in Arcato now.
The main story is about Lucinda, who finds herself on a journey as she discovers more about herself and helps her friends. There is romance, adventure and lots of fun.
The story has a wonderful cast of colorful characters. The gemstone theme throughout the book is so cool. Gods wander the streets among humans, shape shifters cause trouble. With so much going on, it was a lot of fun to read.
I highly recommend this and I hope there will be a second book set in Arcato. I can't wait to go back again.
Magical spell binder.......2006-04-09
I have never read fantasy before. This book is magical and wonderous. It held my interest throughout and made me want to look up more about the gods and gems on the web. I can't wait for the sequel.
Strange and new.......2006-01-17
In the city of Arcato, strange things are happening. People find gem stones lying about. A young boy is killed mysteriously. Shadows are not benign. The gods are restless. And tricksters are loose. Five people are caught up in an ancient struggle, some with powers to fight back, some without.
Lucinda de Francesco and her friend Tyrone Dessaline work together in the garment business. She has an eye for antique fabrics and he has an eye for changing them into marvelous garments. Sebastian, a newcomer to the city, seduces Lucinda, although she struggles against it. He is a man of secrets. On Carnival Night, Tyrone offends Ilyap'a, a storm god, and his life is to be forfeit. Add the murderous intentions of the boy Michael and their lives forever become hopelessly intertwined.
Meanwhile, Alasdair, a cearu, or type of holy man, is the one who scatters gems throughout the city. Having seen as much of Arcato as he wants, he prepares to leave. Yet once he meets Lucinda, he tarries. He and Sebastian are enemies, he wants to help Michael, and he wields the magic of the stones to find the real villain whose depradations increase.
These characters, and more, come alive in this story of magic and people struggling against forces they don't always understand. The premise is original, the language is often lilting, and the colors are vivid. This story and this world are not the usual fare.
fun but strange fantasy .......2005-07-24
The city of Arcato is under some sort of mystical siege. First magical gemstones began appearing with the potency to cast spells. On top of that the ancient port city has become a place teeming with gods and other mythological creatures pretending to be humans only to vent havoc on the locals while time is multiple with varying epochs coexisting in an interactive spiral.
As chaos rules the city, human Lucinda de Francesco detests males whether they are god, shapeshifter or mortal as she wants no one to dictate to her how to live and yet she still thirsts for true love. She is especially wary of antiques dealer Sebastian Keane, who obsessively courts her in spite of her acrimonious rejections of him. At the same time; eleven years old Michael Fortunato has apparently become a killer because someone seems to have used the power of a gem to control the lad. Could that have been a God, a rogue shaman like Alasdair or even the sentient miniature dragon gemstone?
The weird city and its supernatural cast that includes the thinking gems and most humans are well rounded and solid so that the audience believes in what is going on inside of Arcato. However, the heroine on the other hand pontificates on her life slowing down an exhilarating plot that moves on all cylinders when Lucinda is not musing about the shortcomings. Fans of strange fantasy tales will appreciate this fine story wondering whether the preadolescent is a killer, a victim of a gem, or set up by one of the Gods.

almost too good.......2005-09-24
Over the course of his career, Michael Bishop has turned out a series of solid, memorable novels, one after another, many among the very best works sf has to offer. Though always amusing and stylish, Bishop's novels, perhaps as a result of their bittersweet story lines and dependence on strong character development, have failed to catch on with a larger audience.
Count Geiger's Blues offers, at first glance, anything but what we've become accustomed to in Bishop's work, tackling, of all things, the world of superhero comic books. Count Geiger's Blues, however, bears closer resemblance to Alan Moore and Dave Gribbons' innovative Watchmen series than to superman.
In the end, this spoof and loving embrace of the superhero genre proves too well written, too intellectual, and too sensitive to its characters to grant Bishop the audience that has eluded him for so long.
Enemies of decency (and good comic books) beware.......2004-03-30
As an author, Michael Bishop is hard to classify. His novels manage to attain that nebulous position between SF and fantasy, maintaining enough realism for the reader to truly believe that his novels could happen in the "real world". Most of the time his novels function on more than one level, telling both the story and conveying another layer of meaning above that . . . "Brittle Innings" was both a poignant look back at the golden days of baseball and a comment on what truly makes a monster. In this book, things are a little farther out, but not by much. In a fictional town, Xavier Thaxton writes for the Fine Arts section of the local newspaper. His disdain for popular culture is unmatched and he takes every opportunity he can to slam "low" art and elevate the fine arts, opera and classical music and nice paintings and what not. Then one day a bunch of things happen to him at once. His nephew, a "retro-punk" whose hatred for fine art equals his uncle's dislike of pop culture, comes to live with him . . . and Xavier takes a dip in water tainted by radioactivity and finds that he can no longer stand the presence of fine art without being exposed to an equal amount of pop culture. Eventually he finds that events are steering him to become that perfect embodiment of pop culture . . . the superhero. Bishop wonderfully deconstructs the superhero concept, from his weird origin (with a perfectly realistic eventual outcome) to taking the idea of "doing good" to absurd extremes, as Xavier tries to get bars to show seminars on how to respect women, and in fact there's very little superheroesque action involved in the story itself so those purely interested in strangely dressed people beating each other up should go to their local store and find an Image comic (or watch wrestling, I guess). Those wanted dense, rapid storytelling should look elsewhere too, or at least discover new reserves of patience . . . in comics there's a term called "decompressed storytelling" and that certainly applies here, Bishop takes his sweet time developing all of this and the concept of Xavier as superhero doesn't even appear until the book is half over. This isn't a bad thing but there are points where you're wondering where this is all going. The general tone of the book is satire and lightheartedness, definitely not in the "grim and gritty" Dark Knight Returns/Watchmen style of comics, although Bishop knows how to contrast utterly real moments (like the fate of everyone else who gets exposed to the radiation) and he manages to ground the book in a tangible sense of reality and not make it seem like some weird cartoon. Not all the characters really come across as three-dimensional, Xavier is really the only person to truly feel real, his girlfriend Bari is fun but never really comes alive and while his nephew "the Mick" has his moments, his annoying line of supercool hipper-than-thou speak reminds me of old Justice League comics with Snapper Carr. Which is probably the point. But Bishop manages to make this all somehow effortlessly entertaining, and you need to know nothing about superheroes to enjoy the book, just an appreciation that the line between "high art" and pop culture isn't as well defined as you might think. And if the ending doesn't tear your heart out then you might as well be dead. A book that will surprise you with its depth and well worth searching out.
Bishop deconstructs deconstruction.......2002-08-29
This one jumped off the shelf and into my hands. I'm a Bishop fan from years back--having read and loved books like Ancient of Days, No Enemy But Time, The Secret Ascension (aka Philip K. Dick is Dead, Alas), and Unicorn Mountain--and I hadn't even known that he had a new book coming out.
Not only that, but a book that really piqued my interest. Bishop's doing his own version of Watchmen here--what if a "superhero" really existed in our world. But the operative word on the title page is that this is a comedy. For all his realism, Bishop is actually writing in the tradition of James Branch Cabell and Thorne Smith, warping our reality to actually satirize it.
It has confirmed my expectations. Xavier Thaxton is the Fine Arts editor at the local newspaper--a man who hates popular culture. But slowly he finds that popular culture is what he needs, and what he is becoming. The conclusion is a statement about "art," that most nebulous of terms.
Tells a good story while poking fun at art, journalism, etc........1996-08-29
Bishop takes a cast of highly improbably characters who are
suspiciously like people you know and tells a wonderfully
entertaining and human story about the nature of heroism
and duty. Along the way he skewers art, art critics, comic
books, journalism, rock/alternative music, teenage angst,
and almost anything else that wanders by. It's damned hard
to write a satire without turning the characters into
caricatures, but Bishop keeps all his people three-dimensional
and (mostly) likeable even at their worst.
I'm most impressed with what Bishop does with Geiger himself.
Geiger starts as a character rich in artistic depth but one-
dimensional as a person. He ends up as a one-dimensional
comic book character who's much deeper as a person. An
impressive inversion, and an impressive work to pull off.

Authentic New Orleans.......2003-04-28
I picked up this book at the airport as I was leaving New Orleans. I had tried many of the dishes at restaurants in the city, then recreated them with the cookbook at home. The instructions are easy to follow, and the recipes are very much like what I had in New Orleans. My family wants me to make every recipe in the book.
I have a happy hubby !.......2002-11-18
Oh my goodness ! Have you ever wanted to cook down home creole dishes ? If so, this is the book for you. Simple instuctions and obtainable ingredients. I just made the Seafood Gumbo and it is out of this world. (Don't forget to make it the day before ;) The Chocolate Eclairs are to die for and easy to make. This little book is a must have for every good cook and my guys love every recipe. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. Buy it ! Buy one for a friend. A wonderful cookbook.
Excellent recipes clearly explained.......2000-03-21
This is one of the finest cookbooks I've used and definitely the best I've seen with regards to New Orleans cuisine. The recipes rarely require anything extraordinary and substitutes are suggested in those rare cases where required. In addition, she adds pronunciations which are often helpful for those of us who are creloe deprived.
Ms. McKee has done a fantastic job bringing the recipes to life. I could smell the fresh pralines cooling in her kitchen and couldn't wait to make a batch of my own. If you love Southern cooking, this small book will be a wonderful guide.
Delicious, authentic recipes; clear instructions........1998-01-22
Absolutely the best Louisiana cookbook out there! As a native of south Louisiana, I've never found a Louisiana cookbook that has truly authentic dishes--like the ones I grew up with--but this one does. And every recipe I've tried from this book has been delicious. It's not a large book, but EVERY recipe is worth making.

This comprehensive book will allow anyone who follows the advice given, to develop their first miniature reef aquarium. I've been a hobbyist for over 40 years and I even bought a copy for myself. The author doesn't pull any punches, and gives a very clear description of what you should expect from your mini-reef aquarium.
The Simple Guide To Mini-reef Aquariums.......2007-02-15
This book is just what its title implies. A reader could set up and run a mini reef after reading this book. Very little other information would be required to do a mini reef well. The book is fun, easy reading.
Fun and encouraging but not enough.......2006-01-09
A fun and encouraging book that is practical when setting up a new tank. Up-to-date information that is well structured. On the downside, this book shys away from explaining some concepts or warnings in better detail and annoys when the author jokingly admits he doesn't really get it either because one has to be a chemist for this or that anyway.

Book Description
Myths, legends, romances and folktales of the most fascinating goddess of old Hawaii. Pele lives in Hawaiian hearts and minds as the personification of volcanic majesty and power. Having the power to create new land, she has a volcanic personality - an impetuous, lusty nature, jealous, unpredictable, capable of sudden fury and great violence. Yet she can also be gentle, loving and as serene as her forests of verns and flowering trees.

One Book YOU'VE got to read!.......2007-08-20
Herb Kawainui Kona is not only a wonderful artist, but also a wonderful story teller. Whenever we have family or guest visiting we ALWAYS make sure to send EACH of them home with a copy. (if we sent them only home w/ one there would be fights trust me)
Pele:Goddess of Hawaii's Volcanoes is a book about the stories of old Hawaii nei. While reading the stories, you will also find the most BEAUTIFUL painting of what Mr Kane sees. I so believe that Mr. Kane and Pele are related, or this man has meet tutu Pele. I believe you also will agree after reading this book. Also be sure to check out other items about this most awesome gentleman. If you are ever on the Island of Hawaii (aka The Big Island) be sure to go to Volcano Park and see his work up close. Also one might want to type Herb Kawainui Kane on google, yahoo. etc. I do hope that you buy this book and enjoy it has much as we have. Aloha
Beautiful book for those who love Hawaiian culture.......2006-12-11
*****
This is a lovely short book (71 pages), spectacularly illustrated by the author. Even though the classification of this book is "juvenile literature", it is a collector's item for anyone who loves Hawaiian culture.
It is illustrated with black-and-white and color drawings by the author whose value alone surpasses the price of the book. There are many stories about Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, written in an enjoyable style, exploring both past and current legends and folklore. The author, Herb Kawainui Kane, was elected a Living Treasure of Hawai'i, and does an excellent job with this book.
*****
pele come to life.......2006-06-30
a beautiful book, the paintings are breathtaking. this is not an artists rendering of Pele. mr kane obviously knows her well, he has captured the spirit and fire that is Pele. a must ahve for anyone wishing to know this goddess.
Pele revealed.......2004-02-10
A fascinating history of the goddess Pele in legend and history, telling her story from ancient Hawaii to the present. Particularly interesting is the author's description of people returning rocks taken from Hawaii in the belief that they have been cursed. It seems Pele's presence is still very much felt in Hawaii. The book is full of absolutely gorgeous illustrations, it would be worth buying for those alone, but the text is absorbing too. If you want to know about Pele, this book will tell you everything about her.
Pele still Lives!.......2003-01-03
The Goddess Pele never died, She is stil; alive in Hawaii. This book although written by a non pagan brings Pele to life with his words. His art gives her beauty and power. Many who think her curse is a joke take rocks from her island and then live the curse of Pele if they survive they bring them back to Her island. This book reveals the history of Hawaii and tells how Pele was not a native Hawaiin. It also shows the degeneration of her worship through the conversion to the new religion Christianity. The illustrations are so very beautyful and do remind me so much of the beautyful firey Goddess Pele. Her worship is alive and well.

Great, funny book. My grandson 7 years old was traveling with us to Hawaii, this book was perfect. It was all about the misadventures of a little boy traveling with his Dad on his first trip to Hawaii. Not only was my grandson laughing and laughing but so was I. He couldn't wait to finish the book as we read it waiting in the airport and then on a interisland flight.
My Grandson made sure when he left Hawaii that he didn't have any
lava rock with him after reading the book. He wants more of the Zack file adventures.
DEBOFLIC.......2001-07-04
This was the first zach files book I read to my then-6 year old. When we got to the part with the Goddess we were both laughing so hard that the rest of the family thought we went nuts. Since then we have read a bunch of other Zach books. They are all great. The most amazing thing is the Greenburg can introduce concepts (in this book ecofriendly tourism?), parallel universes and reincarnation so naturally that kids can really understand as if they've always known. I think Zach files jump started my son's love of reading.

Book Description
In the tradition of acc-laimed memoirs such as Angela's Ashes and The Color of Water comes the story of a girl's life during the Vietnam War. In riveting detail, Anh Vu Sawyer recounts a childood hanging in the balance as the chaos of the Vietnam War threatens to tear her family apart. From the nightly rocket attacks that left her family trembling in fear to her father's lost glory as one of Ho Chi Minh's cadre to her harrowing exodus to freedom from the rooftop of the American Embassy, Sawyer's SONGOFSAIGON is an inspiring memoir of unshakeable faith and survival that comes full circle when she returns to Vietnam nearly 25 years later on a very personal humanitarian mission.

Two Thumbs Up.......2007-01-03
Wow.......I wasn't expecting to like the book. Everything the other reviewers have said in a positive light are true. It's a very inspiring book. Lots of history and insights into what it was like to live in Vietnam and it was inspiring to read about how the author succeeded in so many ways. Many Christian books get kind of preachy. I think this fills the bill for Christians who want to read an inspiring Christian book, but it also is great for someone who doesn't want to read Christian literature. It's not preachy and it's a great story.
An excellent read.......2007-01-02
Not only a encouraging, uplifting story about the spiritual history of the Vu family, This book also delves into the life of those living in a war torn country (anywhere). Though I remember the news stories of the many people escaping Saigon in the chaotic days before the U.S. left Vietnam, I didn't know much about how the U.S. created a system (quite quickly) to feed, care for, organize and eventually assymilate so many people into the American sociaty. After reading this book I am interested to find out more about this project.
Three Generations of Vietnamese Christians - An Amazing Story.......2006-09-02
This biography/autobiography leads you first hand through three generations of a Vietnamese family. I learned so much about recent Vietnamese history and family culture. It is also an amazing story of God at work in Vietnam and America. Highly recommended.
Wonderful and Well Written.......2004-07-07
I could not put this book down. It gives a touching account of what it was like growing up in war-torn conditions in Viet Nam, and having the faith to stay positive and make something of one's life. This entire family is to be praised as an example of those who rise from conditions unimaginable and keep a strong faith in God to become something their off-spring can be proud of in America. All the siblings of Anh have become successful and given something back to this country, including herself. I can testify to this as Phong Vu is my brother-in-law and I know we're all proud of him and his family.
Surprise pleasure.......2004-03-19
I received this book in audiotape form. I expected a tale of harrowing bravery of Ahn and her family's escape from war-torn Vietnam, but was unprepared for it to be so spiritually uplifting at the same time. While I realized that many churches had sponsored Vietnamese into their communities I never thought much about how the families came to be in the U.S. or that they might have been raised Christian in Vietnam. This book was a history lesson and inspirational at the same time.
