Book Description

Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree took the dangerous plunge from Wall Street power broker–to homeowner! Now the do-it-yourself enthusiast is about to discover that her own dream house is built on a foundation of murder.

Buying a beachfront fixer-upper to lease out to Eastport, Maine’s, burgeoning tourist crowd seems like a good idea to Jake Tiptree and her best friend, Ellie White. But working double-time as landladies to a coven of wannabe witches isn’t what they had in mind. And it only gets worse when Jake is called out one stormy night to make a repair–and stumbles on a dead body in the utility shed.

A small-time thief and street preacher with a particularly violent message, the deceased was no favorite of Jake’s–nor of anyone else in Eastport. But what’s he doing shot to death on Jake’s property? Jake’s bewitching tenants–including an ex-cop, a con man, and a mute teenage girl–claim to have been too busy conjuring spells to have heard or seen a thing. Then a member of the coven disappears without a trace and Jake doesn’t think it’s a case of witchcraft–but a kidnapping...or worse.

Scandal, secrets, and a mysterious box buried deep in the foundation of her own home are just the beginning of a mystery that threatens to bring Jake’s house–and life–crashing down. Now she and Ellie are racing to find a missing girl who may be the key to it all...or lead them to a killer holding the final nails to their coffins.

Praise for the Home Repair Is Homicide Mysteries of Sarah Graves:

“Anyone who can mix slaughter and screwdrivers is a genius. Plus, anyone who has bought a home that needs even a new toilet seat is probably consumed with murderous thoughts.”—Boston Herald

“Like the old Victorian homes she describes...Graves’ stories seem to grow better with the passing of time....Readers who enjoy solving mysteries and fixing up older homes will appreciate Jake’s do-it-yourself expertise in both areas.”—Booklist

“A sleuth as tough as the nails she drives into the walls of her 1823 Federal home enhances a clever plot, which comes to an unexpected and explosive conclusion. Many will relish the vividly described Down East setting, but for anyone who’s ever enjoyed making a home repair it’s the accurate details of the restoration of Jake’s old house that will appeal.”—Publishers Weekly

“Think Diane Mott Davidson with a tool belt instead of recipes!”—Denver Post

4 out of 5 stars not the best, but OK.......2007-05-08

If you like this series, and I do, this is quite an OK book. A little more than usual of running blindly into stupidly risky situations, a bit too much for my taste, and more character stuff than clever plot development, but I find the characters OK. Some others in the series are better, but I wouldn't want to miss any so far and not this one either.

1 out of 5 stars The End of the Road.......2006-09-05

I've had my ups and downs with this series, but have read every entry. There have been characters that I have always enjoyed in the series, George, Sam, though not recently, he seems to be suffering a late adolescence. Maggie has become a bit more flawed and therefore human; I enjoyed her "realness" before she truly had the depth to qualify as a fully formed character. There, of course, has always been Victor, the shining star, who brought edge and acerbic wit and humor to a town full of characters that were either too cutesy (Ellie and now her daughter), too wooden (Wade, forever and always, I'm convinced he is actually a blow-up doll with a looping track, more caricature than character, but I could overlook him considering his brief appearances, or when it comes to Jake recently, simply too neurotic.

I feel like this book is the turning point, if not for the series then for me. Actually, it isn't a turning point it is my jumping off point - I am officially done. The series has been a hodgepodge of okay and make it stop for quite a few books now, but I stayed hoping for a change. The change has come and it is detrimental, it has been alluded to in other posts so I won't elaborate, but I would ask Sarah Graves why and what are you thinking.

I have to question Jacobia's sanity and whether there is any truth to her shrewdness and New York know-it-all attitude. Forget that you rent your property to a coven of witches, but a man with only women and teenage girls in tow - I would ask coven or cult, shouldn't Jake do the same.

This book lacked feeling, the writing was disjointed, some plot points were convoluted, some of the character were so one-dimensional that I felt them tear in two as soon as I turned the page, and in the end I really could have cared less about who did it or why they did it, in fact I hardly cared that most of the characters were still standing and breathing.

Perhaps, enough is enough, if not for the author the definitely for me. Steer clear of this entry and read anew or reread the earlier books in the series it will be a better way to spend a few hours of your time.

1 out of 5 stars Too much home repair, too many neurotics.......2006-08-31

I've read several other "home repair" mysteries, so decided would try for a third. Wish I hadn't. Jacobia is a wanna be 1940's hard bitten detective with a severe neurosis. It's getting too much to be believed. She's a former 6 or 7 figure tough financial person from NYC who has gone to live in the wilds of Maine - so far OK, but now she's doing incredibly stupid stunts and agonizing over her own childhood sexual abuse. Wouldn't such a woman have gone for help over this by now? The book bogs down with Jacobia's irrational desire to hunt down the missing teenage girl and the highly dangerous situations she puts herself in to find the girl. She's becoming far more male than female - most women would feel too physically disadvantaged to go out into the night alone to meet a large man she considers a kidnapper/abuser/possible murderer. They would take along a friend or have some sort of back up if they went. Jacobia doesn't have the appeal of a Kinsey Milhone who is a female detective and who gets into deadly situations. Ellie would make a better heroine than Jacobia. I agree with another review regarding Wade, the husband. He's becoming one dimensional--bops in for a few words and a little action here and there. Her father is one dimensional. The "witches" who rented the summer house are plastic. Sorry, this one is a loser.

5 out of 5 stars Would a coven of witches make a good renter?.......2006-04-19

Sarah Graves' NAIL BITER features veteran audio narrator Lindsay Ellison's suave and moving voice which captures the underlying tension in the story of one Jacobia Tiptree, who faces a coven of witches renting her house and a preacher's murder.

1 out of 5 stars Quite Depressing.......2006-03-16

I love the "Home Repair is Homicide" series.. But I feel like they just keep getting more, and more depressing as the series continues.. It seems Jake loses touch with her son, and often becomes irrational and depressed. Not to mention what un-Godly business happens to Victor in this book.. I was in denial the entire time after I read the beginnings of his deal.. I was quite depressed and wanted badly to cry when I read the final words in this book.. I can't even begin to explain how terribly sad it was.. Especially if you're a big fan of this series and the characters.. After this installment it will never be the same..

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading, nice start the whole adventure.......2006-05-31

The start of the series, this has a good plot and characters. I'd call this fun and relaxing fantasy. Worth reading at least once and likely will make you want to read the whole series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent First Outing For Magnus.......2002-03-30

While the first outing for Magnus holds the same wit and humor as the Warlock series, there are times when it is seen that a new series is being brought to life. Finding himself on a world very much like Renaissance Italy, Magnus takes a guise that will become well know to readers of the later books in this series, Gar Pike. 'Renasissance Italy' finds itself at war, where those left of the former government are fighting each other as their world plunges further into the dark ages. While attempting to help bring peace to this world, as well as a new stable government Magnus (Gar) is also faced with a personal problem. A shadow from his past out to destroy him.

While perhaps the setting up of Magnus on his own leaves the reader feeling out of place with a character that had become regular in the 'Warlock' series, 'A Wizard In Mind,' is still one not to be missed. The introduction of Magnus as both 'Gar' and the 'Rouge Wizard' in his own right helps to establish a little better the character for later stories. However I still encourage you to read 'A Wizard in Absentia' as well to gain more insight to the longing that sometimes fills Magnus and why he seems to continually desire and yet fear relationships with women. Be sure not to miss Any of Stasheff's books, including 'A Wizard In Mind.'

1 out of 5 stars Weak for Stasheff.......2001-04-17

This book is kind of weak, especially for for his "Gallowglass" series of books. Its almost as if Stasheff himself is kind of done with the "demcracy vs. dictatorship" thing. A lot of the plot points he starts peter out and are wrapped up is a somewhat lame fashion at the end. Its almost as if he did not have the time or interest to properly finish the book. Stasheff is a great author, but this one is lacking.

3 out of 5 stars Not so hot.......2000-04-08

A wizard in mind is a good book but not quite up to Christopher Stasheff's standard. If you don't have a lot to do you might as well read it but i'd reccommend some of his other books first.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Dredd stories EVER!.......2007-03-20

Forget that stoopid, horrible Stallone flick & READ Dredd--don't WATCH him. "The Apocalypse War" is a Dredd story that would wind up in the "Best of..." ominibus if they ever did huge bound collections of Dredd (hint-hint). This is definately a great John Wagner run of one of the UK's greatest comic book stars.

Dredd is fantastic as he watches his city get nuked by the Mega-City Judges Soviet counter-parts, who want to enslave the citizens of Mega-City One. They picked the wrong city to mess with & Dredd passes a death sentence on an entire Soviet Mega-City--turning it to radioactive dust at the push of a button. He IS the law!

If you've never read a Judge Dredd story, this a good one to start with. Another is "The Complete Judge Cal" wherein the entire story of Caligula is retold through the justice system of Mega-City One--it too should be in a "Best of..." collection. But with "The Apocalypse War", you get UK commentary of their view of the Cold War, raging at the time the Dredd story was written. With each nuked sector of Mega-City One witnessed by Judge Dredd himself, the reader gets the sense of how the people in the middle get caught up in the madness of a nuclear holocaust.

Wagner writes some of the best Dredd stories because he created the character & "The Apocalypse War" shows a morbid side to the writer & his creation. It is a great story with great artwork. You will not be sorry.

    Book Description

A surprise to those unfamiliar with the Philippines is the great geographical diversity of the Islands and their six major culinary regions. Gerry Gelle's contribution to our understanding of this diversity is his knowledge of these regions. His recipes include the mountain and coastal regions of Northern Luzon and the many islands of the Visayas and the island of Mindanao. We learn of the rich mixtures of people, from the Pangasinans of Luzon with their specialty of "cultured" fish, to the Tagalogs, who use vinegar and fruits to give their dishes the preferred sour taste. He explains the use of guinamos, a paste of fermented shrimp or fish in the Visayas, and the use of hot chilies and spices to make curry in Mindanao. After cooking with these recipes, you will know the aromas and tastes of Filipino cooking.

"Although he gives a culinary geography lesson of the spread-out islands that make up the Philippines, Gelle says 'the book was written from a Filipino-American point of view, not a Filipino point of view.' Thus, the recipes sometimes have been modified to fit both American ingredients and the Americanized tastes of those born and raised in this country. The recipes are no less authentic for being adapted."-San Francisco Chronicle

"There are far too few Filipino cookbooks on the market; most competitors appearing in non-durable paperback which may not survive the rigors of library lending. This solid hardcover is perfect for a library's ethnic cookbook collection: over 200 recipes complete with a selection of fine color photos embellish an in-depth reference to the cuisine of many Philippine islands. Included are an index and glossary, plus plenty of cultural references."-The Bookwatch

    5 out of 5 stars Filipino Cuisine.......2007-08-05

My daughter in law is Filipino and a very busy R.N. with little time to cook. The book gives a history of development of Filipino food over the past couple of centuries. The recipes are easy to follow; just wish there were pictures of the finished dishes.

5 out of 5 stars the only Filipino cookbook I own.......2007-04-03

I am an America-born Filipina. In my search of the ingredients from my childhood family and friends' gatherings, I found this cookbook. Dr. Gelle was able to present all of the recipes and more that I have eaten. I am very impressed with the quality of the cookbook, given that there are minor ingredient/measurement changes from region to region in the PI. I find that the recipes provide an extremely decent guideline of ingredients and preparation techniques that can be lost in translation from generation to generation. I highly recommend this cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful! Awesome Book!.......2007-03-29

This book was thorough! It not only had recipes but also gave history & geography lessons on the Philippines & how Filipino cuisine came to be. I'm a Filipina, & I learned A LOT from his book.

When I was growing up, my Mom would try to teach me all the Filipino dishes she knew. I couldn't learn from her because she cooks without using exact measurements. Her method was, "You just add a little & taste -- a little bit of this & a little bit of that..." I needed measurements, & she couldn't give them. I couldn't learn like that. She also would tell me the Filipino word for a particular vegetable but wouldn't know what it was in English. Needless to say, she & I both got frustrated, so I stopped trying to learn to cook Filipino style, & she stopped trying to teach.

This book has inspired me to cook Filipino food now. It gives the English equivalent for vegetables that I NEVER knew (kang kong is water spinach! I just learned that from the book!), & if it doesn't, it shows a picture AND descriptively explains what it looks & tastes like.

This book crosses all cultural gaps because the author successfully explains any foreign ingredients or terms used in Filipino cooking. The other Filipino cookbooks I own didn't take the time to do that. I grew up in the USA & hardly speak any Tagalog, so this book is a KEEPER!

I'm glad I bought it because now I can share my culture with my family.

    5 out of 5 stars Very impressive........2006-01-29

I've seen my share of Filipino cookbooks, both in the US and the Philippines. Until I found this book, there weren't any selections that impressed me enough to spend any money.

The directions are easy to understand, and I like the fact that the author included historical background, geographical notes, and an in-depth glossary. There aren't many pictures, but the few pictures in the book are lovely. I made the sapin-sapin (sticky rice cake), and it was a success. I even bought a copy of the book for my mother because my dad lost her Filipino cookbook that was over 30 years old. She was very impressed with the choice of recipes.

This is the best Pinoy cookbook I've seen. I'd recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Two Filipino cookbooks compared. This one wins!.......2005-02-10

`Filipino Cuisine' by Gerry G. Gelle is a new title that should replace the old standard `The Philippine Cookbook' by Reynaldo Alejandro, which has been out for about 22 years. Ten years ago, when I was looking for a book of Filipino recipes, it was virtually the only volume available, even making it a reference on Filipino cuisine to such major culinary writers as Raymond Sokolov in his important book `The Cook's Canon'. Gelle's book improves on Alejandro's book in almost every regard, most especially where it counts in the description of the recipes.

Even the most cursory look at these two books will suggest that Gelle's volume is the better book. A look at the two authors' biographical sketches confirms that initial impression, as Gelle is a full time professional chef while Alejandro seems to be a jack of all trades, doing as much in dramatics and dancing as in writing and cooking.

Both books give very informative introductions on the origins of Filipino cuisine. Both, for example, point out that the Spanish influence is less direct than an influence by way of Mexico, since the Spanish governors in Mexico were much closer to the islands than was the court in Madrid. Gelle's introductory chapter seems much more timely, however, in that influences and native foods are discussed by region, in much the same way one has come to expect in descriptions of great Chinese, Japanese, French, and Italian cuisines.

While Alejandro's book may have been the best there was 10 years ago, it now has the appearance of a very journeymanlike effort, much like so many inexpensive books of recipes from Latvia, Rumania, Hungary, or Poland. Because, 20 years ago, a simple list of recipes was all you needed to create a credible book on a national cuisine. The book does include some nice extras such as a glossary of Filipino culinary terms and a list of sources. Unfortunately, as almost all these sources are small strip mall stores like the one I used to visit to get my 25 pound sacks of rice and my lumpia wrappers and my mung beans, most of them are probably now out of business.

The bottom line is that Gelle really has the better recipes, and it is this fact which makes his book worth the extra cost and time it may take to find a copy.

Oddly, Alejandro's recipes for adobo, for example are much closer to the way my adopted Filipino family actually cooked adobo, and the way I learned to cook it. Gelle's recipe, however, is quite evidently much closer to how leading native Filipino chefs cook adobo, especially since his recipe for chicken and pork adobo agrees with the recipe in the very authoritative `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients'. For starters, Alejandro says nothing about marinading the meats overnight in the soy and vinegar liquid, yet it is evident that this brings the recipe much closer to its Mexican roots. Gelle is also alone in citing that the vinegar in these dishes is not any garden variety Heinz product, but `sukang paombong', a native Philippine vinegar.

Another symptom of the superiority of Gelle's recipes is in the comparison of the way the two authors deal with the classic Spanish empanada. While Alejandro gives a very simple filling of ground beef, potatoes, and raisins, Gelle's filling includes carrots, chicken, pork, hard-boiled eggs, and sweet pickle. The recipes for the dough are different, and I would be hard pressed to prefer one to the other. Alejandro's recipe is slightly simpler, in that it uses one egg yolk per cup of flour for fat. Gelle uses egg yolks and butter for the fat in his recipes. The only way I can adjudicate between the two is that Gelle's recipe is much closer to the classic Spanish recipe, as presented by Penelope Casas in `The Foods and Wines of Spain'. So, in the light of other evidence of greater fidelity to his sources, I am inclined to believe Gelle's recipe is closer to the way this dish is done in Manila. In any case, Gelle's description of the procedure for making empanadas is much more detailed than in Alejandro's book, and Gelle gives alternate procedures for deep-frying or baking the empanadas. Gelle also gives recommendations on how long uncooked empanadas can be held in the freezer.

A third evidence of Gelle's superior recipes is in a comparison of their recipes for spring roll (lumpia) wrappers. Alejandro gives a quick simple three ingredient recipe while Gelle gives two different recipes, both of which are much richer and more detailed in presentation than Alejandro's book.

Only in the number of pancit recipes does Alejandro give us more than Gelle. Also, Alejandro's recipes for pancit seem just a bit more interesting, as in his recipe for my favorite Pancit Luglug which has something of a French air about it in that it creates a broth from shrimp shells to add to the sauce while Gelle relies on canned cream of mushroom soup to finish off the sauce.

If you are really fond of Filipino cooking, you may want both books, but you will certainly be better off with more accurate, more detailed, and more interesting recipes if you have only Gelle's book.

    Recommended treatment of Filipino cuisine.

Woods-wise sporting enthusiasts rate the black bear as one of the most elusive beasts in the wild. His shy and secretive nature makes him quite difficult to study in his native habitat.

In this compelling combination of entertaining hunting stories and how-to instruction, Bill Vaznis details everything you need to know about black bears, along with guidelines for harvesting them successfully. You'll learn how to:

    * Track, bait, call, and trail bears
    * Choose the best hunting locations
    * Get the most out of a hunt
    * Choose the right outfitter
    * Hunt trophy bears

5 out of 5 stars Great Overall Hunting Book on Tracking, Baiting, and What NOT to Do (and more!).......2007-09-21

As a novice hunter, I found this book to be extremely informative. One reviewer mentioned that he didn't like the stories that Bill Vaznis opens each chapter with but that is exactly what I LIKED about this book!

This book provided an overall understanding of bears, how to interpret bear signs and track, how to bait bears, methods of tracking and taxidermy. It also discussed strategies to get "finicky bears", discussed mistakes to avoid (very important read for ANY hunter), and had stories of the author's "close calls".

As a female hunter just getting into the sport, this book allowed me to put into context all the hunting stories I've heard and this book managed to get me that much MORE excited for this season's hunt! In fact, while driving out to the bear camp I was reading the "close call encounters" stories to the men and we were all talking about it and having a great time!

If you are serious about bear hunting, or just getting into the sport than I would highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a good baiting book.......2006-12-18

Somewhat good for techniques other than baiting. Locally, I have to spot and stalk. That doesn't keep me from going to places where I can bait. The tables showing bear populations and other data will help me choose my trips. Furthermore, I can use bait if I'm not hunting. Photography and scouting come to mind. This book has great photos.

Vaznis' instructions for dealing with guides, including naming names, is also good. I liked the bit on bear camp dynamics too. The discussion of the bear's senses and the behavior of different bears is great. Old boars get very wary and can live for a long time. Sows, cubs, and young boars are easier to notice, but subordinate.

I definitely enjoyed the hunting stories. Not just the successful ones, but the very many unsuccessful ones. I make mistakes and learn every time out. Hopefully, I can avoid some of the mistakes the he mentions. Vasnis also gives a sense of how time/labor intensive it can be crawling around looking for sign.

Lastly, thanks to Vaznis, I'm going to pack more than a 9mm along with my bow. I guess that bit of fear that comes with bow hunting such large carnivors never goes away and is well founded. I will never huff on a predator call in grizzly country (again) unless I have about 5 12 gauge slugs backing me up.

3 out of 5 stars Great book - for baiting.......2006-07-19

I was excited to get this book in the mail to help prepare for a western bear hunt, but was pretty disappointed after getting through the first few chapters. Each chapter opens with a story of how the author got lucky (or unlucky) on a given trip, then meanders into how baiting is somehow related to the chapter title. It's a good book, I suppose, if you live in one of the rapidly decreasing number of states that allow baiting, however for the majority of states, this book holds little value. What I was hoping to find: more in-depth calling techniques, descriptions of food sources with pictures and parts of the country they may be found and during what time of year, better identification of bear sign, droppings, etc, shot placement and anatomy, maybe the various state regulations regarding bear hunting at the time of publishing - plenty of stuff other than "where to set up your bait station in a corn field, in a swamp, or in the timber." Sorry Bill, there's a ton you could have added to my knowledge on bear hunting, but fell very, very short...

4 out of 5 stars Great Hunting Information.......2005-07-28

This book was very informative and included an absolutely wonderful section on the skinning part of the hunt. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about their animal and be more successful at obtaining one.

          Book Description

Earl Woods, the father of young Eldrick "Tiger" Woods, was widely ridiculed in 1996 when, in an article anointing his son as Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year, he likened Tiger's potential impact to that of a messiah. This unseemly proclamation appeared to embody all the worst elements of the dreaded sports-parent who seeks financial windfall and personal validation by pushing his child to excel on the diamond, the gridiron, the court, or the fairways. But in light of all we know now about Tiger Woods, David Owen asks in The Chosen One, who is to say that it wasn't Tiger's transcendent greatness all along that induced his father to guide him, rather than the father pushing the son?

Not since the dawn of competitive tournament golf has anyone distanced himself from the rest of the world the way Tiger has. He is the best there is at nearly every aspect of the game: the longest driver, the strongest iron player, the most creative around the greens, and so sharp a clutch putter that when he putts well the tournament is over, and when he putts badly he often wins anyway. He is a breakthrough athlete in a sport remarkably resistant to them; in every tournament, Tiger has to beat a hundred-plus competitors, any of whom can take away a title with a four-day hot streak. When Michael Jordan won all his back-to-back championships, each night he only had to beat one team.

Tiger is also a breakthrough athlete as one of the first true multicultural icons. There are African-American, Asian, Native American, and Caucasian elements to his roots; he carries with him parts of so many ethnicities that he not only shatters stereotypes but renders the whole notion of racial classification irrelevant. It is ironic that such an athlete would emerge in golf, America's most tradition-bound and racially insensitive sport.

In The Chosen One, gifted essayist David Owen ponders the social, economic, and athletic implications of this amazing young man. We are only beginning to see all the ways that Tiger Woods might reshape the world. Owen's thoughtful, incisive, elegant, and provocative work examines this phenomenon unlike any the fields of play have ever seen, in a book that will stand alongside John McPhee's A Sense of Where You Are (about Princeton forward Bill Bradley) among the classic works of sports philosophy.

2 out of 5 stars The chosen One .......2005-02-10

The Chosen one was a very interesting book . But it only told about Tiger Wood's career and his life when he was older , getting into golf tornments and training . But otherwise it is a very good book if you were just wanting to know how he won tournments and becomeing famous . Also it told about how Tiger Woods was ridiculed by his race and how young he was , which was a problem towards his career due to reporters and newspapers.Tiger was also known as one of the multicultrual icons . Also what was interesting to people is Tiger was guided by his father rather than being pushed on.

4 out of 5 stars This book is O.K.......2004-03-17

This book was very true about the life of Tiger Woods. It keep me reading page after page. The author was a sports writer so he knew what he was writing aout and it was great.Tiger Woods is the best golfer.

2 out of 5 stars Has some gems.......2002-09-08

A collection of few chapters with the authors own ideas and thoughts thrown in too liberally, it is more of the author's view of Tiger Woods. Does not qualify as an biography, just a bunch of articles. Does has a few gems which make it worthwhile.

          4 out of 5 stars GOLF'S ANNOINTED.......2002-07-02

Over the past century golf has produced some of the greatest players of all times. None, however, have reached the caliber of skill and magnitude of Eldrick "Tiger" Woods. In such a short time and at an early age Tiger has raised the sport of golf to a higher level. Who is this young man who has broken golf records, establishes new ones and inspires a new generation to seriously take up the sport of golf?

David Owen deals with that question in this well written and concise book about Tiger Woods and his impact upon golf. He examines Woods' training, his place in history, his impact on the sport and the public's fascination with him. As a contributing editor of Golf Digest, our author doesn't inundate you with Woods' golf statistics. Nor does he give you an in depth expose of Tiger's life. Owen gives a positive even handed treatment of Woods life and career. He is just as fascinated with this young phenomenon of golf as we are but doesn't worship Woods. He respects and admires this young sportsman.

I enjoyed this book because it enlighten me about the development of Woods' career. Tiger comes across as a disciplined young man who is highly competitive, focused and has high expectations of himself and for those around him. His aura and the way he has carried himself forces his opponents to improve their game. Tiger's impact upon golf is immense as Owen has shown throughout the story.

This is an excellent book for fans of Woods, golf enthusiasts and those who love sports in general. I am not a sports fan but I picked up this book in passing. I was impressed by Woods' character, discipline and commitment. I highly recommend this book which has given us a snap shot of a true sportsman that adults and young people can admire and emulate. Woods has made himself one of the greatest golf players of all time but he has transcended the game. He serves as an example of excellence for life whose lessons we can certainly take to heart.
