5 out of 5 stars Brilliant gem of a book.......2004-09-24

This book is beautifully written and full of basic truths about life, love, loss and the ways humans behave. I found it gripping and memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks So Much Harriet . . . ........2004-03-31

She is an outrageous woman - but honest. People are drawn to her because of this . . .because her life has been so "outsized" compared to most people's. Wherever she is, she is the focus - her energy, charm, charisma - something. What is interesting is no matter how out of control she is - in some overwhelming situations - she is able to bring a laser sharp perception to bear on it.

5 out of 5 stars TOTALLY UNIQUE: A Rave From A Reader.......2004-03-21

Recvd Harriet's book and read it in a day. What a great little book! It fits within that pantheon of women of the Beat era like Joyce Johnson, HattieJones, etc. But it is something much more than that interms of "woman power". Why not longer??? I'm sure drawing from her life experience that Harriet could do an extensive amazing chronicle of her life & times in bohemia. I certainly wanted to hear more about her relationship with Alfred [Chester]--there's a lot more she could tell us. But I'm sure that Alfred is just one character among many others she could give insight into. As I mentioned previously to you: I find the 50s American ex-pat community in Europe fascinating material & yet largely ignored... You get a taste of it in The Beat Hotel but those guys were almostinsulated from the action compared with some of the others who made the decade. & Harriet is a real international bohemian! But let's not forget Harriet's own personal story. What an adventuress: a genuine personified spirit ofEros battling the forces of Thanatos! And she is astylist in her own right. I think that the title pieceis one of the best descriptive essays that I have ever read in terms of how it turns-the-tables & gives us the perspective of the object-of-gaze as both observor& participant. Harriet's figures and allusions are eloquently apt and enthralling. What insights! Totally unique! That essay should be anthologized. Thus, my modest appraisal of Harriet's book....Best,chris natale peditto, publisher/editor Heat PressPO Box 26218Los Angeles, CA 90026

    Book Description

In the classic of modern fantasy, we hear the tale, ancient and brazen, of White Jenna, born in sorrow, raised among warrior women, and taught to call forth her shadow sister by the light of the moon. And we learn what the later world makes of the lives of Jenna, of her princely lover, and her shadow-self: what legends are told of the White Queen, what songs are sung of King Longbow, what tales are whispered of Dark Skada. Of the tragic myths and glorious histories that time will make of their lives--and their deaths.

    4 out of 5 stars Great "Alta".......2004-08-02

Jane Yolen breathed new life into the tired old Amazon stories with "The Book of Great Alta," the first two books of the unique Alta trilogy. Including "Sister Light Sister Dark" and "White Jenna," this is a mythic-hero/coming-of-age tale with a twist -- the mythic hero is a strong girl.

"Sister Light Sister Dark" introduces Jenn, a baby girl orphaned three times: Her mother died in childbirth, the midwife died while taking her away, and the warrior woman who adopted her was also killed. She's taken in collectively by the followers of Great Alta, a benevolent goddess. But when the hame is threatened by war and death, Jenna learns of the prophecy of a white-haired child who will be their savior.

"White Jenna" picks up where "Sister Light Sister Dark" left off: Jenna is reluctantly accepting her fate as the legendary Anna. Now she and her two pals are trying to warn the other hames about evil Lord Kalas's attacks, and along the way they run into Carum, the prince whose life Jenna saved in the previous book. (Naturally, they have fallen in love) Now they are trying to raise followers to overthrow usurper, but will they be killed when they try?

Most stories of independent, amazonian tribes of women are unrealistic and dedicate their plots to tubthumping. Jane Yolen never falls into that trap. Her tale is both delicate and strong, with plenty of pseudo-medieval history nuggets, enticing fantasy and slam-bang battle scenes.

Yolen's writing is detailed and evocative, especially when she writes battle scenes. She also creates the whole religion and civilization around Great Alta very well. It seems like a medieval civilization that could actually have existed -- women who are farmers, hunters, warriors, priestesses, cooks, and anything else they need to be.

Most intriguingly, Yolen paints this fictional civilization in the Dales as real; she litters the text with scholarly reports, analysis of old legends about the Anna, and old folksongs from the Dales. At the same time, she injects some extra fantasy with the "dark sisters," a sort of shadowy alter ego that Jenna and the other women have.

Jenna herself is a likable heroine. She doesn't seem to do quite as much as a chosen-one role might suggest. But Yolen's portrayal of a reluctant teen who doesn't see her own potential is excellent. Carum is a good love interest, never becoming too gooey and possessing strength and personality of his own. Most of the supporting characters are given their own quirks to make them interesting.

Want to read about a strong, intelligent mythic hero who happens to be a woman? Jane Yolen creates just one such character in Jenna of the "Books of Great Alta." A rich and original fantasy story.

5 out of 5 stars A book unable to put down.......2004-01-13

i love it, every word and every second im reading it. i just love books where they dont really tell you how the charactors look like. somehow, you picture yourself as a part of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Two books in one.......2003-05-03

Originally printed as two books (Sister Light, Sister Dark and White Jenna), this is a book about an orphan girl who is taken in by this tribe of women. It follows her growing up, becoming a woman, and fulfulling a prophecy. This book provides an awesome look into Goddess culture societies, and is a great buy for anyone looking for a book with strong female characters. This is, by far, my favorite book that I own (except I own it as the 2 separate books).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Rich Series, Great For Young Women.......2003-01-14

Jane Yoeln evokes rich culture and characters of depth and interest in this wonderful set of two books- Sister Light, Sister Dark and White Jenna. I loved it when I first read it in college... I loved it through the trials of grad school... I now collect Yolen books because of it. I always wished Tolkien could write solid female characters... now I have some to work with in the mind's eye. It also serves and an excellent comic relief for folks in academia, being told that their theories of the past are crazy...

    2 out of 5 stars Good Enough.......2003-01-02

I read this book because I love Jane Yolen - Dragon's Blood, Heart's Blood, Tartan Magic - and I have to say that I was disapointed! I found a dry plot, none too interesting, and - in my opinion - useless footnotes clogging the content, and I was very turned off.
Listen, you can read this book if you want, but I would suggest no.
If you want good Jane Yolen, read Pit Dragons or Tartan Magic and leave this book on the shelf.

The Ancient Crystal has been supplying the world of Essa with power for thousands of years. Protected by the Shield, neither the Jassans nor the Ussirs have been able to capture it, because nobody knows how to turn off the Shield.
But somebody needs to, because scientists on both sides have found out that the island on which the Shield and Crystal rests is about to sink into the sea.
The Jassans figure that to do the impossible you need somebody who does it every day. So they get Harry Borg. The Ussirs figure the same thing. So they go get Ahmed Hassad!
Will either of the humans be able to break through the Shield and get the Crystal? Or will they be so busy trying to kill either other that they end up letting the end of the world come about? Will Guss ever marry?
The last book in a great series!

5 out of 5 stars Patricia Wells Does It Again.......2007-10-02

I thought of Patricia Wells as being primarily an expert on French cuisine, but this cookbook proves me wrong. The recipes are simple, but elegant. I have prepared the baked risotto with asparagus and spinach for several different guests, and they have all run out to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars All you need is this book and a lace curtain in the window.......2007-01-18

I have been cooking with 'Bistro', Patricia Wells' book of simple French recipes, for several decades now. I have recently been converted to her 'Paris Cookbook'. So what stopped me from buying her book of Italian trattoria cooking?

            Two words: Marcella Hazan.

I am addicted to Hazan's 'Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking'. It's clear. It produces restaurant-quality meals that take only modest effort. And "fancy" is the last thing it is.

I thought I just didn't need another Italian cookbook.

But now, fourteen years after it was first published, "Trattoria" --- a bargain at $13 --- is finally in the house. And, more to the point, in the kitchen. And I am chastened.

You want simple? This is it. Easy? Forget about it. Organized? Buying the book could be the last time you'll ever need to think about an Italian menu.

Why? Because the fact is, you really don't want rich and fancy. You want a trattoria --- an uncomplicated, modestly decorated, family-run establishment featuring traditional regional fare. You drink the house wine. You tend to order whatever special is being pushed. And you are likely to leave satisfied though not sated.

Patricia Wells recreates that experience here.

            5 out of 5 stars Italian 101.......2007-01-03

This is a great cookbook and the only one you need to take on Italian cuisine. Virtually all of the food that Patricia Wells includes here is "real"--nothing so exotic that your family will throw breadsticks at you for laying it on the table. This is the book that taught me how to cook spinach the right way! Consider it an investment in good living. Highly recommended. Also, check out Wells' book on French cooking of Provence as well as her guides to Paris restaurants/food.

            4 out of 5 stars Quite a book, indeed!.......2006-02-01

If you've ever had the chance to travel in Italy, you know the wonderful world of the little, out-of-way family restaurant or Trattoria and the marvelous food serve there. This book is a virtual tour of such eateries!

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.......2006-01-11

My benchmark for retaining a cookbook is that it adds one good recipe to my repertoire. So far, this has given my five.

            Favourite recipe is 'lemon risotto'.

Have been a huge Patricia Wells fan ever since her 'Food lover's guide to France.'

This is by far the most complete book I have read on hand and machine applique I have reviewed. Explanations are clear and concise for the beginner as well as for the intermediate and advanced quilter. The pictures are drawn to thoroughly explain each step in applique. Jeanne Benson's book should be a definite addition to anyone's collection who is seriously into the art of applique.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, Concise Manual.......2004-01-05

This Feng Shui manual is a perfect book for beginners and advanced alike. The format is simple, well illustrated, and easy to read. The author explains Chinese zodiac, the importance of the direction of your property, your qualities and energy and how this relates to your home, as well as using the Five Animals to help you find the most harmonious positions and locations in any room. It also explains the basic principles of picking furniture, etc and how to properly place it in a room. I recommend this manual to any enthusiast.

This book told a lot of information, but not about how to DO Deng Shui on your home. It does explain the concept of chi energy with good diagrams.

5 out of 5 stars ba gua 101.......2002-06-11

I just think Master Lam really stands on two continents. He's bicoastal in the very best sense of the word. After introducing a language to discuss feng shui concepts in his earlier 'Handbook,' here Lam focusses on a few key concepts.

Like ba gua. This north house, southwest house stuff is about the funnest part of practicing feng shui. Lam's observations on architecture are always fascinating, and often witty.

There are very many schools of feng shui. But whether you live in China or the U.S., the problem of urban life-finding yourself in that space-is the central issue today. The 'Personal Manual' offers a feng shui approach to that problem.

Call it wacky; call it wind/water. It's no goofier than Heisenberg. Live a little; enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Feng Shui Book.......2001-12-09

I probably own half a dozen Feng Shui books, and while others have some good introductory material, this is the book I refer to again and again. It's full of reference material on the five elements, Chinese astrology, and how to apply the Ba Gua to your own house. I thought it was all very accessible and easy to follow.

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting information, but not the best out there..........2000-10-21

I have been using Feng Shui for some years now, and have a number of books on this topic. This book is a very good book in some ways, but is perhaps not the best first book for someone to buy who is looking for an introduction to Feng Shui.

The subject of Feng Shui is actually very complicated, and there are several schools of study which use different techniques to make their recommendations. This book does go into a very good explanation of the Five Element theory, talking about the effects of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood and how they control or modify each other. It also gives a nice explanation of how Feng Shui correlates with Chinese Astrology, and gives a brief overview the various astrological personalities.

From there the book begins to get very complicated. It discusses the effects of the compass placement of a particular house on the placement of things within the house. It talks about the alignment of the Ba Gua according the the direction of the house, and gets quite complicated in its workings. I find that for the average North American or European this is too much technical information and is more than we need to know. It is possible to effectively apply the basic principles of Feng Shui to the average non-Asian home without getting quite so deep into esoterica.

All in all, I would recommend this book as an adjunct to others you should have in your library if you're really interested in this subject. But if you're looking for a basic introduction and working manual for Feng Shui try either "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life" or "Interior Design with Feng Shui", both available here on Amazon.

                        Book Description

James Martin started his career the same way a lot of aspiring painters do--by imitating other artists. During the 1950s and 60s, he nabbed imagery and mannerisms from Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, van Gogh, Picasso, Chagall, and Calder. But the real source of Martin's mature style isn't buried in the mysticism of the Northwest School or the avant garde trends of European Modernism: it traces back to his days at Ballard High School during the 1940s. He and a buddy used to cut class and head downtown to the Rivoli Theater on Seattle's First Avenue to watch the burlesque.

The surrealism of those shows percolated into Martin's psyche and his paintings--once he started to trust his own view of things--began to sprout the ambiguities of burlesque and the black humor of slapstick. Now when Martin paints a Northwest scene, it's likely to be peopled with freaks and floozies. He stays up nights listening to the radical opinions on Art Bell's radio talk show and he considers the Jerry Springer show a new form of vaudeville. Martin transforms the daily input of the media into the wild stream-of-consciousness of his paintings--for him both a compulsive kind of storytelling and a way of escape. Like his heroes in the Northwest School, Martin still considers art-making a sacred endeavor--but he figures there's no reason you can't get a good laugh out of it, too.

In unearthing the story of this under-recognized painter, art critic Sheila Farr presents a fast-paced account of the strange turns of Martin's career, as well as a fresh look at our standards for evaluating art. Martin's swashbuckling approach to imagery, she discovers, was way ahead of its time. Using costumed self-portraiture and outrageous marriages of art-historical images with pop culture icons, Martin was Post Modern before the term was invented.

                        Book Description

Creator of the modern female private eye story, Marcia Muller has been writing novels and short stories about Sharon McCone since 1977. In the process McCone has gained a host of associates and formed her own detective agency. Some seven years ago, Marcia Muller decided to show readers different views of her sleuth by relating cases through the eyes of McCone's colleagues.

McCone and Friends contains three stories told by McCone herself, as well as a novella and a short story narrated by the agency's investigator Rae Kelleher, a story from the viewpoint of its office manager Ted Smalley, an investigation conducted by McCone's nephew Mick Savage, and one by her long-term lover Hy Ripinsky. The settings range from small planes to a sweatshop which puts Asian women into virtual slavery, and the mysteries surround a 1950's jukebox in a rundown hotel, a sculpture welded together by a long-missing and now very-dead artist. In perhaps the most moving story of all, a teenage girl has vanished leaving as a clue only a collage on her wall.

The McCone Files shows why Marcia Muller is one of the greatest mystery writers of our generation.

As a mystery author with my debut novel in its initial release, I hold Marcia Muller in the highest esteem. Her creation, Sharon McCone, revolutionized modern mystery fiction. McCone broke the old stereotypes. She became the first human private eye. She is also the oldest sister of all those women private eyes practicing today. MCCONE AND FRIENDS is a short story collection with an unusual twist. Ms. Muller provides unique perspectives on McCone by allowing her supporting charaters to tell some of the stories in this collection. Rae Kelleher, Mick Savage, Ted Smalley, and Hy Ripinsky all give their views of McCone. McCone, herself, tells three stories. MCCONE AND FRIENDS is a great book that any reader of mystery fiction should have in her collection.

I have a signed limited edition of this book and couldn't resist the urge to read it. If you are a fan of Marcia Muller, this is a must have book. The stories in this book are told by Sharon's friends, giving the reader an insight into her personality that you would not normally get. And lets face it, characters in a long running serious develop personalities of their own. This book gives you the opportunity to see Sharon from another perspective. The reader is given this rare opportunity in 8 stories that live up to Marcia Muller's excellent writing abilites. ENJOY!!

4 out of 5 stars FRIENDS, FAMILY AND LOVERS.......2000-10-19

Sharon McCone is probably the best loved detective in the mystery genre. Readers have seen her career evolve from All Soul's Cooperative to her becoming an independent investigator with her own staff and career. She has got it all together but she didn't get there on her own.

In this collection of short stories we see another side of Sharon through her office manager, lover, hacker nephew and co-investigator. They share with us their own thoughts about working with Sharon. They also move beyond talking about "the boss" and reveal something about themselves and how they go about solving a mystery with or without "the boss". Each one has their own distinctive voice that gives you a different perspective on how the team operates.

Of course Sharon has her own story to tell. Sometimes she doesn't appreciate the "help" from an amateur sleuth such as her big brother but who can choose your relatives especially when they are "annoying" you about a case. You will be delighted in listening to these stories and sharing in the escapades of Sharon's loving team. A limited collection of short stories such as this is a great addition to your mystery library.
