Book Description
In the third novel of this bestselling series, London investigator Maisie Dobbs faces grave danger as she returns to the site of her most painful WWI memories to resolve the mystery of a pilot's deathnbsp;Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone. Alexander McCall Smith's Precious Ramotswe. Every once in a while, a detective bursts on the scene who captures readers' hearts-and imaginations-and doesn't let go. And so it was with Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs, who made her debut just two years ago in the eponymously titled first book of the series, and is already on her way to becoming a household name. nbsp;A deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. nbsp;In accepting the assignment, Maisie finds her spiritual strength tested, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission also brings her together once again with her college friend Priscilla Evernden, who served in France and who lost three brothers to the war-one of whom, it turns out, had an intriguing connection to the missing Ralph Lawton.nbsp;Following on the heels of the triumphant Birds of a Feather, Pardonable Lies is the most compelling installment yet in the chronicles of Maisie Dobbs, "a heroine to cherish" (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review).

Pardonable Lies.......2007-09-05
When things happen, they happen in threes. So Maisie Dobbs finds out when she takes on a case to help a child accused of murder, a sort of double case dealing with soldiers killed in the war, and trying to find out who was trying to kill her. The child accused of murder is a girl barely thirteen forced into street walking, of the two soldiers, one was the brother of Maisie's best friend and the other the son of an MP who had promised to settle the question of whether the boy still lived or not. Lastly, the killer had surfaced as she began her investigations Was is someone connected to a case? Talented Jacqueline Winspear has written a story that will keep you reading, beginning to end. You will thoroughly enjoy meeting Maisie and the other characters while stepping back in time. A series of subplots woven into the fabric of the whole make for a satisfying and pleasant read. A touch of the paranormal added to the mix of mystery and romance give it a flavor to set it apart from the rodinary mystery. Any reader will find this deserves the title, cozy, even though it doesn't follow all the rules. You'll be looking for other books by this very able author. I know I will.
Powerful Anti war Message.......2007-06-08
All of the Maisie Dobbs books are wonderfully written historical novels as well as mysteries. They take place between the wars, and speak of the horrors of the War to End All Wars. What the brave Brits don't know is that there is much worse to come.
I re-read the series often, and purchase it for gifts.
Much to like--but in slo-mo.......2007-05-17
There is much to like in the mystery novels featuring Maisie Dobbs, private investigator in London, ex-nurse from World War I. First, there is Ms. Dobbs herself, an interesting mixture of liberated feminism and vulnerability. Memories of the war's blood and horrors are never far in the back of her memory. Everything she does is affected by this.
Then there is the time, a dozen years after the war, in the midst of the so-called Great Depression that hit Europe well before the United States, with an even bigger war looming in the guise of nazism and fascism. The reader recognizes this, but of course Maisie has no way to know what Mein Kampf will lead to in less than a decade.
Unfortunately the plot is just too slow, stopped cold from time to time as the author insists, for example, upon telling us the color and texture of every garment that a character is wearing, even though the raiment has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Moreover, the happenings are just a wee bit vague at times--too many times. This curious mixture of vagueness and too much information should have been edited out during the first read at the publishers.
Still, Maisie and her times merit at least three stars.

The third in the Maisie Dobbs series, Pardonable Lies, maintains the high quality of writing evident in her first two mysteries. Author Jacqueline Winspear transports us back to the 1930's, when the Great War (WW1) was still fresh in the mind. Maisie Dobbs served as a nurse in France during that engagement, after the war, with help from mentor Maurice Blance, she attended college and became a psychologist and detective.
In this book, Maisie is asked to lend her expert assistance on three cases. The first, to prove an impoverished young girl innocent of a crime that might send her to the gallows. The second, to discover the fate of the brother of her closest friend and confidante, reported dead by the military. Her third case is to discover whether a young aviator shot down over France is dead or alive. His father, Sir Cecil Lawton, doesn't really care one way or the other but feels he must fulfill the deathbed promise made to his wife.
As she investigates, she learns that there are a few intertwining threads among these three seemingly unrelated stories. Probing deeper, she discovers shadowy figures following her and an attempt is made on her life. But which case is the one that inspires such passion?
In order to get to the heart of the matter, Maisie forces herself to return to France where she is still haunted by her memories of nursing wounded soldiers. She must confront her demons and put her past behind her - or suffer the consequences.
Jacqueline Winspear has written a highly complex and masterful story. Readers will gain a real feel for the time between the two World Wars from all the exquisite detail Winspear has painstakingly included. Maisie herself is an appealing, imperfect heroine, who is more than ready to admit her faults, showing a character that is all that much more authentic.
Maisie Dobbs.......2007-02-06
Jacqueline Winspear provides us with a fresh breath in mystery writing. The author's vivid descriptions take one back to the time period of World War I. The main character, Maiser Dobbs, is a cross between Nancy Drew and Alexandra Cooper of the Linda Fairstein novels. It is difficult to put the book down, because you want to find out what happens next. In the end, you have not only been thoroughly entertained by Ms. Winspear's writing, but you are left with a feeling of peacefullness.

terrific fantasy .......2005-11-11
In 1815 Ireland Donovan Bramwell is a mixed breed part vampire and part mortal. His grandfather heads the Protectorate, an organization consisting of vampires and humans at war with the malevolent Upyran Vampires sect that sees mortals as the lowest rung of the food chain. Donovan hates both sides. When the Upyran Vampires Prince Vestos bit him and killed his father, the Protectorate did nothing.
Now his grandfather has become a total vampire so he expects his heir Donovan to lead The Protectorate or he will be left penniless and homeless. At the same time Donovan deliberates his future, Ceni Princess Iceni needs help regaining her lost amulet stolen by Vastos when the vampires and their Roman allies eradicated her people. She chooses Donovan as her best bet and starts to seduce him into being her loyal slave, but her effort fails when he reads her mind. Still he finds a desire to help Ceni and wonders if she already completed her seduction of what is left of his soul that he fears will make him enslaved to Vastos. However Vastos has his own dilemma as he knows his soul is rotting. To save himself he either must kill Donovan or Iceni for he is a Dead Walker too.
DEAD WALKERS: THE PROTECTORATE is a terrific fantasy that provides the audience a powerful tale in which the three prime species, vampires, mortals, and the quasi seem genuine especially in their varying interrelationships. The action-packed story line provides insight into the diverse vampiric clans and how the quasi live in human and vampiric camps. The triangle of life and death between the lead trio makes for a compelling one sitting supernatural thriller, but it's the world they live in that fascinates readers.

First volume from an alien viewpoint: Cha Thrat.......2002-10-28
All the previous volumes in the series were told from the viewpoint of Dr. Peter Conway, except for the first story in _Hospital Station_. All the volumes from this point on are from the viewpoint of other characters, no two the same, and only two of them human. _Code Blue Emergency_ not only has the honor of being the first experiment with the new style, but is the first story told from the viewpoint of one of the non-human staff members: Cha Thrat, the first female to achieve the status of warrior-surgeon among her people, and how she came to be the first and so far only Sommaradvan to join Sector General's staff.
A New Girl At Sector General.......2001-07-20
Cha Thrat is a Somaradvan warrior-surgeon, one of the first *female* warrior surgeons. She is also a stickler for the traditional proprieties of her calling which makes her very unpopular with her collegues and superiors. Her unsatifactory career takes a dramatic turn when she is called upon to treat an injured human. Dispite her ignorance of the species she manages to save the life of a Monitor Corps Captain who shows his gratitude by getting her an appointment to Sector General. Though intelligent, adaptable and eager to please Cha Thrat manages to create havoc in every ward to which she is assigned. Determined not to return home a failure she accepts a transfer to the Hospital's maintenance staff and quickly discovers the work is neither menial nor dull. For a while it looks like Cha Thrat has finally found her niche - then a maintenance job takes her aboard the Ambulance Ship Rhabwar and she finds herself breaking rules and offending people all over again. This entry in the Sector General Series is especially interesting for its close up look at the work of the Maintenance Department and is the first novel to be told from a non-human, and female, POV.

Riveting, honest portrayal of life in America.......1999-07-24
Although sociologists and the media report extensively on violence among children and teenagers, and the proliferation of gangs, little is said about the effect the decline in morality and lack of spirituality have contributed to this problem--until now. Nicky Cruz tells us that it is not only sociological, political and institutional issues that are responsible, but a "corruption of the heart." My only criticism is that at one point, when he compares gangs from the 1950s to today's, it appears that he romanticizes that the old gangs were somehow more loyal... honorable." In addition, he tends to be a bit exclamatory in his dialogue, but given his passion, it is understandable. Otherwise, if you really want to know why children are so violent, why children kill, read this!

Customer Reviews:
don't expect the real asian chicken salad dressing recipe here........2007-07-24
What a ripoff! I bought this book solely for the intent of re-creating
the asian sesame chicken salad. This recipe in this book IS NOT, the same as in the restaurant.
You have been warned.
Excellent results.......2007-04-11
I tried several of the recipes and got excellent results for the most part. The text also provided interesting background information and a bit of history of the art of breadmaking. I shared the info and bread that I'd made with quite a few people, some I knew well and others I became acquainted with, so it ended up being way more than just an interesting book to read! I may never attempt the tricky appetizers but the basic bread, i could handle.
Some good recipes, but don't expect restaurant bread recipes.......2007-03-26
I checked this book out from the library hoping to find the recipes for many of the breads Panera makes and markets. No such luck. Like previous reviewers state, the only authentic Panera restaurant recipes are for a few sandwiches and soup items. Still the focaccia bread recipe was very good as was the sourdough (though this recipe is available on Panera's web site). I don't think I'll buy the book because I can get recipes similar to the basic bread recipes the book offers just by surfing the net.
Panera Recipes.......2005-03-29
Like the bread and was disappointed when I read that only the basic breads were in this book - wanted the actual Panera Bread Recipes. Changed my mind about buying it for this reason.
Good book, but very few authentic Panera Bread Recipes.......2004-11-26
The Publishers Weekly review was correct in stating there no authentic Panera "Bread" recipes in this book. The only authentic items are a few sandwich and salad recipes (and these recipes are not very hard to figure out after eating the product at the restaurant). The bread recipes in the book are basic, such as white, wheat, rye, etc.
The other chapters on Sandwiches and Soups and Salads, etc., are decent, but are dominated by recipes that I would not expect to be in a Panera Bread book. The few recipes from Panera Bread include the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich, Asiago Roast Beef sandwich, and Asian Sesame Chicken Salad. The recipes that are stunning but definitely not expected in this type of book are: Boiled shrimp and Tomato Bahn Mi wiht Lime Mayonnaise and Avocado, Curried Egg Salad Croissant with Daikon Sprouts and Roma Tomato, etc. When purchasing this book, I did not expect to search out 'speciality' indgredients (daikon sprouts, Hungarian Paprika, etc.). Many supermarkets do carry these, but many do not. So just be forwarned before purchasing the book.
In short, the recipes look good, but were definitely not expected! I was expecting a book with lots of bread recipes, soups, salad, sandwiches, and desserts, like those at my local Panera Bread. However, I obtained a book with a broad spectrum of recipes that look good, but was not what I wanted.
My advice: Flip through the book at a bookstore before buying! Happy Eating!

No help at all.......2007-08-26
This book could possibly be helpful to people wanting a show dog, but if you intend to use your Great Pyrenees for what it was bred for, guarding livestock, it is no help at all. I bought the book hoping for some advice in correcting my two Pyrs' bad habits like digging and chewing. The book basically said that my dogs chew because I hurt their feelings by leaving them outside and not letting them in the house. Puhleese.
All the information you could ask for.......2005-09-09
I bought this book searching for information on the Great Pyrenees Dog. I was in the process of buying a puppy and wanted to know everything I could about the breed. This book answers all your questions and some you wouldn't think of asking! Kim Lansley has put together one of the best Pyrenees books on the market. Very well put together and informative. The pictures are beautiful and the layout wonderful! I would highly suggest this book to anyone interested in buying a Great Pyrenees Dog.

For the serious hobbiest and the professional potter.......2002-01-07
This is the book I have been looking for. I'm building a clay studio and wanted advice and tips on how to set it up. This is the only book I've found that gives really in-depth information on these topics. He also covers other topics you would want to know if you're going to be a professional potter.
Not only does he share some of his own horror stories (so you won't repeat them yourself!), but he also includes insets of the stories of other pro potters and their studios. Very helpful. He covers studio needs, selection, etc.; working with suppliers, vendors, contractors; equipment selection; and business practices, marketing and self-promotion (the hardest part of the business for me - and I think for most artists!). He also talks a bit about teaching and it's effect on your work (pro and con). The subtitle of the book says it all: "The complete guide to defining, identifying, and establishing yourself in the craft community".
This book is a must have for any professional potter and will be found very helpful even to hobbiests.
A thorough guide to getting started in the pottery business!.......2001-07-04
This book is so comprehensive and has answered so many of my initial questions regarding the start of a pottery studio and business. Steve writes in a language the layman and advance potter can both understand. The chapters are coherently laid out with the pertinent topics such as vendors, supplies, electrical needs, studio set-up, equipment making and purchasing, space needs, floor plans; the list goes on and on for the whole book. The back of the book has many vendors, suppliers and web links for reference. Although the web pages of many have changed, it is a great start on connecting with the pottery world. I highly recommend this book.
A path well directed.......2000-05-07
It is comforting to know that there is a book out there that is well written and primarily intended for people like me, who earn a living from clay. Naturally, most of us have already knocked our heads and come up with some soluations - discussed by Steve, but the confirmation of having made "right" decisions, etc., takes a load off and builds confidence. Had I been able to read a text like this six years ago, I would have had less bruises to my head and my ego! His other book, Raku: A Practical Approach is also a treasure which I notice is not listed here on Amazon - uhhmmmmm! Would be nice to have that as an Amazon selection.
Book Description
School library media specialists know that a close collaboration between the school principal and themselves is critical in the development of an exemplary school library media program, but they are often unsure of how to establish and build on that collaboration. Using Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, the authors present a vision for a student-centered library program, showing methods librarians can use to learn to work together with their principals and teachers to build curriculum, incorporate state and national standards and guidelines, and implement technology. Interviews and vignettes from eracticing school library media specialists and school principals give witness to the effectiveness of the program, highlighting examples of key points. Beginning with a discussion on the principal's training and experience with the school library, the authors describe what goals he or she has in common with the school library media specialist, and how the two can develop a rapport to reach these shared goals. Wilson and Lyders explain how the media specialist can and should become a part of curriculum planning and evaluation with the principal. The involvement of the school principal in assessing and evaluating the school library is essential. Thus, working together on library public relations and outreach to the school community and Internet and technology plans increases this involvement. Wilson and Lyders also address the importance of gaining the principal's endorsement for such issues as intellectual freedom and copyright. The school library can have a powerful and positive impact on learning through the strong leadership and close realtionship of the principal and library media specialist.
Customer Reviews:
Fails to tell pattern numbers.......2007-04-01
I checked this out from the library.
I'm very disappointed in the book. The skirts are cute. The problem is that the author vaguely references an unknown paper pattern in each skirt write-up. There's no pattern number included!
There are no paper patterns included in the book, just some vague tiny hand drawn schematics to show what I guess is the main pieces of the skirt. I have no idea what size to make the pieces based off this hand drawing, I'm not skilled at skirt making.
At the end of the book she credits McCall's and Simplicity for their patterns she used, adding which page numbers in the book are featuring their skirts. However she completely fails to let the reader know what pattern number to buy. I would rate this book a whole lot higher if I didn't have to waste my time trying to hunt down what pattern was used on page 88.
I just spent the last half hour trying to find the correct patterns for various skirts at the respective pattern company websites and have failed on all counts. The book is a huge disappointment because of that lack of information.
Great for 'tweens & 'teens.......2006-11-29
Finally an instruction book inbetween the classic "Vogue Sewing" (a bible for serious seamstresses) and kiddie books explaining how to hand-stitch a felt teddy-bear. Stylish Skirts is a fabulous sewing-course-in-a-book for beginning seamstresses who want to make their own clothing...keeping n mind that not only do they not teach much sewing in "Home Ec" these days, but most young girls' moms only stitch flat items such as quilts and decorative pillows...no help if you need advice on how to choose a pattern for an item to WEAR.
Even if you could find sewing lessons for beginners, you'd love this book for reference, to review how a sewing machine works, how to measure your body for choosing the correct size, how to put in elastic and zippers, what you need hand-stitching for and how to do it.
The photos are the best I've seen in any sewing book, the spiral binding makes for easy handling since you can place the book FLAT while working with your fabric or pattern or hand-stitching, etc. The writing style is up-beat and approachable.
I bought this book for my 10-year-old....a whole bunch of her friends have asked for sewing machines for Christmas, so I'm going to go out and pick up a few more copies for her friends...a great birthday gift!
Excellent learn-to-sew book, but title needs work........2006-10-25
I wish they had chose a better title for this book. I would have called it "Learn to Sew by Making Stylish Skirts". If you are looking for a reference book for advanced sewing or fashion design methods, this is not the book you want. But other than that, I think this is a well-designed instructional tool for novice home sewers.
The sewing industry has had to wake up to the fact that young people haven't been taught to sew and don't think of it as an interesting activity. This has resulted in a lot of new books and patterns targeted at younger sewers. The challenge is to get their attention, and then give them information that is helpful and clearly explained-and that beginners can digest in short segments of free time. I think this book is one of the better ones I have seen. The layout and design of the book is bright and attractive, and the sewing information is accurate and clearly explained.
The book is written for beginning sewers, and assumes no previous knowledge. It covers all the basics that you need to know before starting a first garment project: how to select a pattern, how pattern sizing works, purchasing a machine, selection of sewing notions that are actually useful, etc. There is good advice on choosing fabrics that are easy to work with and that are suited to the pattern chosen. I am an experienced dressmaker who has taught beginners to sew, and I think someone who has never sewn a garment before could definitely complete a creditable first project with the help of this book.
The target demographic for the book seems to be young working or student-age women who would like to sew their own clothes, but haven't had access to a good sewing class or teacher. The author takes the approach that the learning experience will be much more appealing and fun if the student starts with something she actually wants to wear, as opposed to traditional beginner projects like pillowcases and (ick) aprons. (If you are a male wishing to learn to sew, you can still use this book even if you don't wear skirts yourself. Make some for your mom, sister or female friends, and impress them with your creative side). She also assumes that most of her target audience are pressed for time, so she doesn't burden the reader with too much information. Rather than have a total beginner struggle with pattern drafting or complicated fitting methods, the author advises selecting a commercial skirt pattern in a basic style as a starting point. Choosing skirts is a great idea. They are probably the easiest type of women's or girl apparel to construct and fit. Pattern styles are suggested, with tips on how to interpret a pattern envelope to be sure you are getting what you expect. As patterns go out of print quite frequewntly, no specific pattern brands or numbers are given. However, excellent patterns for skirts can be found in every major pattern catalog, so finding a good one won't present a problem for even the most clueless beginner.
The bottom line: an excellent textbook for a beginner's sewing class, or for motivated would-be sewers who want to do it on their own.
Worthless.......2006-05-04
I saw this book at Barnes & Noble and I'm really glad I did before I made the mistake of purchasing. It only tells you how to make skirts with premade patterns and on top of that doesn't even give the pattern numbers.
Very disappointing.......2006-05-04
This book is very disappointing. You need to find and purchase patterns in order to make these skirts. This book would be better if it showed you how to modify a basic pattern into the various skirts. It is just good for ideas and should sell for less. I don't even think ideas presented here are original. You can get these ideas and more by looking at skirts in the store and a little imagination.

Book Description
Dosso Dossi has long been considered one of Renaissance Italy's most intriguing artists. A wealth of documents chronicle his life, but because very little of his work has survived, he remains an enigma and his art continues to be as elusive as it is compelling. In this collection, leading
scholars from a wide range of disciplines examine the social, intellectual, and historical contexts of his art, focusing on the development of new genres of painting, questions of style and chronology, the influence of courtly culture, and the work of his collaborators, as well as his visual and
literary sources and his painting techniques.

An Accidental Soldier: Memoirs of a Mestizo in Vietnam

Book Description
Juan Ramirez always believed he would die in Vietnam. As a teenager growing up in the San Francisco area in the early 1960s, "Nam was there, just over the horizon, like the distant thump of artillery." His father and uncles had served in World War II, another uncle in Korea. Numerous cousins had enlisted. At nineteen, Ramirez decided to embrace the war. In 1968, the year of the Tet offensive, Ramirez joined the U.S. marines.
Two bloody tours later, Ramirez survived, but at immense cost. Twice wounded, undesirably discharged, and plagued by survivor's guilt, Ramirez surveys the toll of Vietnam on flesh and spirit in this captivating memoir.
Ramirez tells his story in a voice not often heard from the war, that of a Chicano soldier. By tracing his roots, and exploring the cultural pressures and social demons that weighed on his family and community, Ramirez offers an unflinching look at the fall and redemption of one Mexican American veteran.
Ramirez has given us a rather unique and clear-eyed view inside the life and times and thoughts of a young Chicano who joins the marines and goes to Vietnam to find his destiny. . . . Fascinating reading.Joseph L. Galloway, author of We Were Soldiers Once. . . And Young.
An honest portrayal of a life marked forever by the Vietnam war told from the perspective of a Chicano soldier.

Wow! A real hero!.......2004-12-14
This is a book that needs to become a movie but a film just couldn't capture the raw truth of this man's experience. Written in retrospect A Patriot After All covers a Chicano's life from emerging from an agriculutral family, to low level working class to a family striving to become typical Americans, yet held back by the realities of rascism, discrimination and their working class background. The writer embraces his own frailty to reveal the humanity of his family trapped by Society and repressed by their own shortcomings. Through it all he continues to try and be an American and never blames America for the abuse and self abuse he faces. Wow, what a story!
A FIVE STAR KNOCK OUT..........1999-05-23
RAMIREZ HAS BRAVELY WRITTEN AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY PLOTTING HIS LIFE'S PILGRIMAGE FROM CHILDHOOD TO SOBRIETY. AS A TRUE AMERICAN VIETNAM WAR HERO, HIS VERY PERSONAL TALE IS INTERTWINED WITH MOMENTS OF GREAT JOY, CONFUSION ABOUT HIS HERITAGE AND SELF-IDENTITY, DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR AND HIS ULTIMATE SURVIVAL. I FOUND MYSELF ENTHRALLED BY RAMIREZ' WRITING STYLE. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASSION, RAMIREZ' PROSE AND TIMING, IN THE MIDST OF THE MOST UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES, RIVALS THE BEST. EVEN THOUGH I LAUGHED AND CRIED WITH RAMIREZ, HE NEVER LOOSES SIGHT OF WHO HE IS AND RECOGNIZES MILLIONS OF WAR VETERANS FOR TAKING A SIMILAR JOURNEY.
MY HAT IS OFF TO MR. RAMIREZ FOR WRITING A POIGNANT AND COMPELLING BOOK THAT FREELY EXPOSES HIS INNER FELLINGS. HIS WILLINGNESS TO SHARE HIS LIFE, FOR GOOD AND BAD, IS TRULY STIMULATING AND INSIGHTFUL.
