I found the last couple of Hannah Swensen books rather bland. In fact, I don't even remember much about them. But Fluke stepped it up a notch and gave us a great old-fashioned mystery full of betrayal, heartache, envy, and of course, murder. It had me guessing the whole time and I was completely involved in the story. I can't wait to try out the Peach Cobbler recipe!
A return to the usual standard.......2006-09-08
I had started to become slightly disillusioned with this series. The past couple of books (The Fudge Cupcake Murder and The Lemon Merangue Pie Murder) were sweet and homely but much more 'baking' than 'murder'.
The Peach Cobbler Murder is much more like the early books in the series, with the murder at the centre being enhanced by the relationships between the characters and homely atmosphere.
Having discovered about 12 dead bodies by now, it was only a matter of time before Hannah would be considered a suspect! This time the unfortunate victim is Shawna Lee Quinn, who has set up a rival bakery across the street from The Cookie Jar.
If you haven't read any of the other books in the series, expect a homely series that harks back to the novels of Agatha Christie (nothing too gory happens!!)
Although you could easily read this book on it's own, I would recommend starting at the beginning with 'The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder'. Suspend all disbelief and enjoy!

Love is in the air of Lake Eden, Minnesota as Hannah Swensen, proprietor of The Cookie Jar bakery looks forward to the Valentine's Day wedding of her employee Lisa to policeman Herb Bessemann. However, life is not all hearts and flowers at the Cookie Jar, as the bakery's business has trickled to almost nothing with the opening of a rival cookie shop across the street called The Magnolia Blossom. The Magnolia Blossom has just been opened by two sassy southern sisters who are giving out great promotional deals and plenty of flirtation along with their cookies, which turn out to be quite mediocre. But the novelty of the new store and the scoop-neck blouses worn by the sisters seem to be bring all the cookie business in town to their store. When Shawna Lee Quinn, one of the southern cookie divas, is found shot to death in her store kitchen the morning after Lisa and Herb's wedding, Hannah enlists her sleuthing friends to try to determine whodunit. Hannah feels she must clear herself from suspicion of the murder, as Shawna was not only her baking rival but also seemed to be quite friendly with Hannah's sometimes boyfriend, deputy Mike Kingston.
Hannah and sister Andrea are also grappling with their widowed mother's new boyfriend, a slick newcomer to town named Winthrop Harrington the Second. Their mother seems to be falling hard for the sauve Englishman, and the girls are worried that her mother is being taken advantage of.
I gave this book only 4 stars because the murder mystery plot was a bit thin, in my opinion. I did enjoy the recipes included in the story and look forward to trying several of them. I felt that there was a better mix of recipes to story in this installment of the Hannah Swensen mysteries. It seemed to me that some of the previous books had way too many recipes.
This was an enjoyable story, and one that will be especially enjoyed by readers who look to bake.
Peachy.......2006-06-04
Peach Cobbler is one of my favorite desserts. This book is as good as peach cobbler, maybe better. Hannah finds herself in a mess in this novel. She might have to shut down the bakery because Shawna Lee has set up her very own bakery across the street. She and Lisa lose a lot of business because of it. I liked this story because of the reality of the business. That kind of thing really happens. You need to read this for yourself to see if things turn out OK in the end. One of Joanne's best.

Before my mom passed away last year she gave me the first book of this series and said read, mom was right as always and I was hooked on this series ever since. Great characters, funny, mysterious. Just all around great. Mom was right, so we should listen to her.. :)

This volume picks up with Louie and the gang heading into a dangerous forest to help Louie get the materials he needs for a new wand. Of course, they soon find trouble. Melissa's irritating suitor and secrets from Jeanie's past keep the rest of the volume going.
All in all volume 2 does a nice job of carrying things forward from volume 1. We also get to see a few things that weren't in the anime and thanks to the narrative style of manga we can even get into everyone's head more which leads to some pretty interesting character moments.
In short, if you like Rune Soldier this book is certainly worth your money.

I just discovered the Bureau 13 novels (there are only three of them) and they're fantastic! Laughed until my ribs hurt all the way through. Plus the heroes really have to pay for their victories, they get wounded and major characters die. But more importantly, the characters are a real team, each member gets their time to shine, and while each is a tough hombre, when working together as unit are they truly strong. Never seen that before in any novel and I loved it!
An RPG play-by-play.......2002-11-20
The book is based on a Role Playing Game (RPG) and has a lot of potential. The only problem is that it reads like a radio annoucing a play-by-play of an actual game. The plot is loose and appears to form almost spontaneously as it progresses. The characters are stereotypical and two dimensional. I'm curious if the secons book improves on the first, since there doesn't have to be as much effort on side comments and more on the story line. It was reviewed as a parody of the X-Files. I disagree. There is almost no parody, but minor plagurisms of assorted myths and popular literary genres.
Tunafish forever!.......2002-03-01
Big guns and big magic. Ruthless, bizarre villains who do NOT tell the hero their secret plans, and who will happily shoot him in the back. Sexy telepaths, ninjas, characters die, and lots of laughs. This book is as funny as it is exciting.
Plus, the main character is Latino. Nearly every book I read has just another white guy saving the world. Maybe with a black sidekick, or a Latino gal pal, but they're just along to get kidnapped (so the hero can rescue them), or carry the extra ammo. But not in THIS book. Ed Alvarez kick's supernatural butt all the way through, and leads his team to victory because he's smart AND the toughest SOB on the planet. All hail Team Tunafish!

Wacky fun Stalking the night Fantastic.......2001-08-03
If you are a gamer you will REALLY enjoy this book. Nick Pollotta writes in the first person of the ex-FBI agent and while this can be a problem for the other characters you would never know it. The book is a breakneck race for Bureau 13 to save the world and you are with them every step of the way. It's a hard book to put down so expect to lose some sleep. It's not a big book and if your like me you can fly right through it. Don't do it, slow down and read it slow, it's well worth the time. Lots of nice quick comments that make you think.

While the concept for this book is entertaining, it's execution is the worst example of self-congratulatory, 2-dimensional, claptrap I've ever read.
Sure, according to Pollotta, he came up with this long before "The X-Files" and "Men in Black" were twinkles in their creators' eyes, but he must be slinking in shame to have been bested so effortlessly. While those two examples are entertaining and competent, Pollotta's effort reads as though he simply transcribed an evening's worth of conversation during a role-playing game.
Worse, his characters are cribbed from the "Magnificent Seven" songbook, each more powerful, competent, smart or magical than the last. Jeezus Louisuz, doesn't he realize that what makes characters interesting are their flaws, not their strengths?
The book is a quick read and kind of fun in a puerile way, but it's not worth the gazillion stars previous reviewers have bestowed upon it.

I am relatively new to the Ayruvedic Lifestyle having read several books and consulted an Aryuvedic Physician. The book however is a wealth of information about Ayruveda and eating healthy. The author presents much general information in an informative and at times humorous style that is clear. The recipes are sometimes complex but once the reader assembles the ingredients, the rest is fully explained. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious in learning how to cook for balance and health.
My favorite inspirational cookbook.......2007-09-03
I usually shy away from cookbooks with no pictures because they're not as inspiring and it's more difficult to decide on recipes. However, I've been interested in Ayurveda for a couple of years and thought I'd try it out. I turn to this book everyday...It's a shame that people are writing reviews about the recipes in this book using too much fat or sugar. I wonder if they actually read the first section of the book that explains why the recipes are this way and to remember to honor what one feels like eating. Sugar has a place in our diet, but as Miriam states, those of us who crave sugar might have an imbalance. Those recipes are to be used sparingly. Also, if you find that you'd prefer cooking with alternative flours to white flour, or alternative rice to white rice, I think the idea here is to follow your intuition. These recipes are only meant to be a base for your ideas and not to be the end.
What I love about this book is the flexibility the recipes provide with suggestions for variations depending on your mood and what you have on hand. In no time, you'll be creating your own recipes inspired from Miriam's.
This is the first Amazon review I've written, that this book has truly inspired me to do so.
The Best Ayurvedic Cookbook.......2007-08-20
This is my favorite, most-used cookbook. It is the Gold Standard for Ayurvedic Cookbooks. The name of the book says it all. It is filled with wonderful, taste-full recipes that are fairly easy (for Ayurvedic recipes) and that turn out pleasing to all of the senses.
So many Ayurvedic cookbooks seem to be from post-Macrobiotic types that focus on the 'austere' and 'clean' aspects of food (so much so that they overlook the 'wonderfulness' of food). Ms Hospodar's book is about beautiful and sensual food that is true (as far as I know) to Ayurvedic guidelines. Her book is enjoyable to read and is full of useful information. I have used this book for over two years and still grab it first.
It is simply the best. It is not exclusive to vegetarians or followers of Ayurvedic. Any lover of good food should be satisfied with this Banquet's offering.
I highly recommend this book.

Since getting Heaven's Banquet, I have thrown out many of my old cookbooks. The recipes are simple but very tasty and the introduction about food preparation, mind-body types is easy to read, makes great sense and is a foundation for better nutritional eating. I cannot recommend this book highly enough so stock up the crisper and go vegetarian - it really is the best way to eat

A great book if you have the background knowledge!.......2007-07-06
I am an Equine Physical Therapist. I frequently encounter chiropractic issues in my horses and have had to rely on waiting for someone else to come out and assess/ treat the horse. I thought I could do alot of this myself but I needed more detailed instruction. Although I do not consider myself a replacement for the chiropractor, I believe I can treat quite a few of these problems without the long wait. This book is extremely useful but I would not recommend trying the techniques without an extensive anatomy background. I have a Masters in Physical Therapy and have done human therapy for years--- this enables me to apply those techniques to this instructional manual.
This is a great book with the correct background knowledge.

Dr. Kamen gives a lot of useful anatomical overview and techniques for equine chiropractic, but the book is laced with attempts at humor that are distracting for the serious horse owner looking for good information. If you can pick through the antecdotes and get down to the "meat" of the book, it will prove worthwhile, but this is not for the serious student of horse anatomy and chiropractic.

i LOVED reading this book, but it was a little technical at times. i am scared enough to try chiropactic treatments on my horse and this, even though it is written very clearly and interestingly, scared me a little. it made me realize that i really needed to understand what i was doing before i tried anything out!

I find this text the height of irresponsibility. People who legitimately do animal chiropractic have to be licensed, and must first be either DVMs or DCs with 180+ hours of additional training, and pass rigorous testing before practicing. The very idea that laypeople are encouraged to do their own adjustments is frightening. You can't learn this from a single book! Yikes!
You can do tremendous damage with an improper adjustment. Will we next have books for laypeople to remove someone else's appendix?
Anybody that works on my horse must be trained as above. I beg people to not do this!

"This book celebrates the design, novelty and colour of these highly fascinating toys," the authors write, exactly the same elements that readers and collectors find so fascinating.
In 225 pages, they present hundreds of colour photos of rare and iconic robots and space toys, along with brief informative blurbs. A rare feature is a listing of manufacturers' marks, both fascinating and helpful in identifying toys. Another rarity is the many photos of original boxes, along with numerous colour and style variants. Amazon suggests you buy this book along with Blast Off! I'd make the same suggestion. Blast Off! has lots of reading, unusual in a collector's book, while the stunning photography and layout lift this British book well above the ordinary.
The Current Best Resource for the Space Toy Collector!.......2000-07-28
The authors have done a superb job in presenting a classic piece of collectible reference. The book is filled to the bubble with all the greats and done with taste and care. One of the nice sections is a complete listing of toy manufacturers trademarks. No effort was made to price the robots and space toys, which I'm gratefully thankful for, since any attempt would certainly have dated the work. As a collector this will be one of my future guides as I pursue what has become a rewarding if albeit expensive pastime! Bravo...and my compliments. To all others the least bit interested...get this book!

I have to agree with the comments made by the author himself, both " ...informative & visually stimulating ...". If that was what he set out to achieve by writing this excellent book, then he has surpassed it. Superb colour pictures of the type of tin robots & space toys we all played with in our younger days brought the memories flooding back. For collectors of this type of toy, this has to be a classic. Clear photography, excellent description of each toy, rare items and original boxes and a desirability guide. A must for both new & experienced collectors alike !

Altho I'm not a Space Toy collector, this will be on my shelf just for the quality and quantity of the fantastic vintage graphic images of the toys and their boxes.
For the Space Toy afficianado, this has the best, large scale, clearest photos I've seen. Thee is brief, but concise information on each toy that includes the size, maker, year, country, desirability, & description. There are several pages of trademark logos. It's a real trip down memory lane and should serve as one of the top ranked refrence books out there.

Eleanor Curtis has done a beautiful job of capturing the outstanding nature of the hotel properties in this book. Her photographs demonstrate the unique details added to each structure, while giving a more general view of the property.
She selected excellent features of each property to high-light, and her descriptions and photographs are to be applauded. This collection would be a perfect gift for anyone intereseted or involved with architecture or hotels or both.

A preface: as "A Reader" so bluntly pointed out, street art and graffiti in particular are not well received by the general public. It's simply ignorant to equate graffiti taggers with "muggers" because in no way shape or form is an inanimate object like a wall the equivalent of a human being. "By all means buy this book if you want to glorify the meaningless of talent wasted by tag". It's all subjective. If you're the type of person who is interested in geographical currents in street art then buy this book.
The unsung heroes of DC's graffiti scene of old get a little less ephemeral treatment. Essentially - if you're on this page reading these words, then you probably have already made up your mind.
I want a book on local muggers!.......2002-11-21
Having suffered at the visual diarrhea that these low-level criminals and thugs threw up throughout my city, I checked it out at a bookstore. Yes, you see advertisements that were merely written on (web surfers should check out the excerpt page on "Seven" who defaced an add- how bland and unoriginal and flat out borrrring!), you see beautiful buildings, offices and homes turned ugly and you see pictures of a bunch of... who could have been artists but instead were the pettiest of petty criminals.
By all means buy this book if you want to glorify the meaningless of talent wasted by tag...-- me? I'm waiting on a study of muggers as "class warriors." Only the most hardened city-hating suburban fool could enjoy this. Buy a book on architecture instead and see real beauty before the dummies drew all over it.

Gastman has compiled a truly unique collection here. Any reader will be pulled in bythe graff artists' stories, but writers themselves will cheer that they finally have some 'permanent' documentation of their own in "Free Agents." It shows that it was a labor of love.

The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement is well documented in prose, but for sheer emotional power, nothing can compare to the pictures from this era. It's a challenge for a writer's words to match the force of Bob Adelman's photographs in this book, but novelist and essayist Charles Johnson rises to the task in his treatment of King's life and death, as well as the heroic struggle of African Americans in the United States. Johnson, the author of Middle Passage (which won the 1990 National Book Award), offers an exceptional counterpoint to the stirring images with the depth and weight of his essays and captions. "How soon we forget that King was not only a civil rights activist," Johnson writes, "but also this country's preeminent moral philosopher, a spiritual aspirant, a father and a husband, and that these diverse roles--these multiple dimensions of his too brief life--were the foundations for his singular 'dream' that inspired millions worldwide."
Adelman intimately captures King's background, from his comfortable middle-class upbringing in Atlanta to the dashing figure he cuts with his wife, Coretta, to his steady ascendance as a forceful preacher thrust into prominence during the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-56. We cringe at the sight of King being photographed as a criminal and at the horrific treatment many blacks endured by racist Southern police. The triumph of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, which he gave at the 1963 March on Washington, is beautifully detailed, along with his acceptance of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. We also see a weary King, weighed down by assassination attempts, harassment, inner-city riots, and the Vietnam War. Toward the end, King displays an eerie sense of calm in the photos taken just days before his death--particularly in an April 3 photo taken at the Mason Hall in Memphis the night before his murder, where he declared that he'd "been to the mountaintop." The words of 1998 MacArthur Fellow Charles Johnson's ccoupled with the poignant photographs of Bob Adelman climax in this excellent literary work that chronicles the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The wonderful photographs and literary prose compliment each other beautifully throughout this masterpiece, detailing the life and democratic stuggles of King. Beginning from the early childhood of Mr. King to his untimely death,
Adelman's photographs depict a very young King with his family. It provides insight into his his upbringing and illustrates the foundation that culminates into the life of the great civil rights leader. It continues to depict his educational pursuits and ultimate marriage to the lovely Coretta Scott.
The books carries the reader through the voyage as a young King rises to prominence as a preacher, his continued quest for racial equality, and mainly
his persistent call for agapic love in conjunction with nonviolence. Also, shared in this tome is intimate photographs of King's time spent with his loving family and information about King's life that may not be well-known.
Although nearly 300-pages, this book capitvates the reader from cover to cover. All in all, Johnson and Adelman are to be commended for their efforts! This liteary piece is nothing short of superb!

A Photo Spectacular.......2000-12-05
I have many photography books in my personal collection, and I have several on the civil rights movement, but this book is by far the best I have seen. The book combines the work of several photographers - including Alfred Eisenstadt, Charles Moore, Henri Cartier Bresson, plus some lesser knowns - who have been individually recognized for their own work. The photographs are a true documentary of Martin Luther King's life and death with many photos I have never seen before.
