Book Description

On October 16, 1859, John Brown led a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, leaving 15 people dead. Viewed in the North as a saint of freedom and in the South as the devil incarnate, Brown was a visionary who not only foretold but made inevitable the bloody apocalypse of the Civil War. An intricate mosaic of alternating voices, Raising Holy Hell is an explosive, multi-textured evocation of the visionary madness of the man who saw an America damned by the sin of slavery.

5 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its unconventional best.......2006-06-20

Taking on such a controversial subject as John Brown and portraying his tumultuous life, times, deeds and death in any form let alone in an engaging and objective manner would seem an impossible task, but Olds succeeds brlliantly in this novel. I won't bog down this review with the story line - it's been told and reviewed many times. I will make a note on the "format" of the book - it's somewhat unique to say the least. There are multiple first person narratives, quotes from historical figures and short vignettes, as well as an imaginary court scene with Mr. Brown. Don't be dismayed. This doesn't detract from the book. To the contrary, when one finishes this novel it all makes perfect sense. If you have an interest in John Brown, his place in history, abolition, the Civil War or just want to read a fine novel you won't be disappointed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars A very important book.......2006-04-14

In Raising Holy Hell, his novel about John Brown, Bruce Olds makes the reader ask: How should a person act if directly faced with the inhuman system of slavery that brutalised and killed millions? And, more uncomfortably, could extreme individual violence as exemplified by John Brown's actions be justified in seeking to hasten the end of slavery years before the advent of the American civil war? While vividly imagining through diary entries and historical documents the personality of John Brown and his impact on those who knew him, as a reader who just happened to stumble on this remarkable book I am most grateful to Mr. Olds for bringing into focus and making real the myriad repercussions that slavery had on our society and the individuals it affected. He does justice to real people whom he lets speak to us through his novel (apart, perhaps, from his portrait of Abraham Lincoln), including, among others, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Perhaps most shocking are the inclusion of statements by judges and various "founding fathers" of the USA in support of slavery. Highly recommended for anyone interested in these human questions or this historical period. A remarkable book that also causes the reader to reevaluate their own response to present-day issues which are even now costing the lives of thousands.

fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing less than terrific.......2001-11-28

An astonishing retelling of the life of John Brown. I selected this book for my book group after having listened to Banks' "Cloudsplitter" on BOT. I had read a few reviews of that book post hoc only to find that many critics cited this text as superior. I would say that the experience of listening, rather than reading, to Banks' book likely boosts my appraisal as I thought it was brilliant in its expanse, detail and imagination. As for Olds' work, it reads as though one is living through the time in a dream-like state. The wickedness and cruelty that is frequently attributed to "historical context" is brought to bear so that it is difficult to fathom how we look back at our American history as somehow noble and founded on justice. As for the man, John Brown, it was a serendipitous reading choice given the current state of world affairs. When resistance is linked to terrorism, the results are necessarily unpredicatable and frightening, regardless of the outcome.

5 out of 5 stars Cloudtopper.......2001-05-27

Russell Banks's "Cloudsplitter" may have garnered higher sales, but Bruce Olds's Pulitzer Prize nominated debut novel, while unjustly neglected by readers, received more positive reviews, and deservedly so. Where Banks's wholly conventional treatment of the life of John Brown remains turgidly earthbound, Olds's more innovative take soars with incandescent energy. Where Banks's book plods, Olds's pulses with brute lyricism. Where Banks drones excessively, Olds incants extravagantly. At last, "Cloudsplitter" implodes of its own portentousness and gravity; "Raising Holy Hell" explodes with the raw power of its poetry. It is the difference between being sucked down a black hole, and riding the wave of a supernova. Which reading experience would you rather have?

Led by a mysterious Qirsi "Weaver" who can reach into the minds of others even in their sleep, the rebellion is now turning Qirsi against Qirsi, as it weakens alliances among the Eandi. Some Qirsi ministers are torn by their loyalty to their lords; others are ready to join the increasingly violent rebellion. Even some Qirsi who oppose the rebellion take sides against their lords, as one Eandi lord prepares for war against his peers. 4 out of 5 stars Moving along nicely.......2007-05-31

If you enjoyed the first two books of the "Winds of the Forelands" series, you'll most likely enjoy this one as well. The plotlines that were established in the first two entries of the series are all addressed here (to varying degree) and for the most part the action carries forward and moves us closer to an ultimate resolution. While at times I felt that the plot was in danger of being stretched to accommodate future volumes, by the time I finished book 3 I was satisfied with the pace and with the new twists and developments.

"Bonds of Vengeance" introduces several new characters and settings, and reintroduces some others that haven't been seen since book 1. For the most part the characters remain rather two dimensional, although there are exceptions to the rule. Tavis in particular seems to be evolving into a somewhat complex character, and I can't help feeling for Kearney & Keziah's situation, which becomes even more layered and nuanced in this outing.

Overall I felt that BoV was a fine addition to a series which has consistently held my interest, and continues to do so.

3 out of 5 stars So many threads being woven..........2007-05-07

Bonds of Vengeance is the long-awaited third volume in David Coe's Winds of the Forelands series.

This volume focuses almost entirely on the political intrigue, which was hinted at in Rules of Ascension: Book One of Winds of the Forelands and dramatically increased in Seeds of Betrayal (Winds of the Forelands, Book 2). Coe reveals just how entangled the Qirsi Conspiracy is in the events of every major house and kingdom in the land. Some of the plots and characters introduced in Seeds of Betrayal are fleshed out here, but the sheer volume of characters and various intrigues makes it hard to keep track of exactly who is betraying who. You really need to re-read both previous novels before attempting Bonds of Vengeance, and even then it gets a bit confusing.

You can't help but admire Coe's ambition. In just three installments he has created enough characters and sub-plots to make Robert Jordan blush. I just hope he can bring them all to a satisfying conclusion in (far) fewer volumes than the aforementioned Mr. Jordan!

Despite the relatively slow pace, Bonds of Vengeance isn't as focused on character development as I expected. The only characters we really get a better knowledge of are the assassin Cadel and the Weaver, who sadly remains somewhat two-dimensional.

It's not quite as compelling as Seeds of Betrayal, but Bonds of Vengeance is still a fine chapter in a very engaging series that should appeal to most fantasy fiction fans. Expect to be entertained, and you will not be disappointed.

Bonds of Vengeance is the third in a 5 book series entitled the Winds of the Forelands. The previous books in order are Rules of Ascension and Seeds of Betrayal. Winds of the Forelands is the second series by Coe. Although featured prominently in the first 2 books, Tavis and the woes of the Eandi, for the most part, play second fiddle to the story lines of the Qirsi and Grinsa here. The Eandi are the ruling culture in the land. They have at times suppressed the culture and persons of the white-haired, magic welding, Qirsi. By the time of this novel, many of the Eandi nobles and landowners have Qirsi members in their households, some of whom are highly placed. This book ties up some loose ends started in the first chapter of the saga and reviled details of the Qirsi

    Book Description

or nine hundred years, the Forelands knew peace, but unrest among the magical Qirsi people has blossomed into a conspiracy against the Eandi rulers. What started with the occasional 'accidental' death of a lord has exploded into violence, rending the fabric of Forelands society. Led by a mysterious Qirsi 'Weaver' whose powers can reach into the minds of others even in their sleep, the rebellion is now turning Qirsi against Qirsi and weakening alliances among the Eandi. Some Qirsi ministers are torn between plotting to overthrow the Eandi and staying loyal to their lords; others are already active in the burgeoning and increas--ingly violent rebellion. Even some Qirsi who oppose the rebellion are forced to take sides against their lords, while an Eandi lord in league with the conspiracy prepares for war against rival houses. Grinsa, a Qirsi gleaner, is trying to avert a war that would decimate Qirsi and Eandi alike. Traveling with Lord Tavis of Curgh as the young noble seeks revenge on the assassin who killed his betrothed and thus set the chaos in motion, Grinsa may be the only person who can stop the Weaver from shattering the long peace. But even Grinsa can't do it alone. His sister Keziah, archminister to King Kearney, himself a staunch advocate of peace, works to prevent war, too. They may be too late, though, as realms plunge toward war, goaded by traitors within their gates.

2 out of 5 stars Lost Focus in Bonds of Vengeance.......2005-12-26

I've read his Tobyn-Ser series and it was well and tightly written. Great world building and character development.

His first two book in the Foreland series were just as well written, but his third book Bonds of Vengenace looses focus with reptitive scenes of assasination and endlessly new characters, as well as, endlessly new kingdoms with their own political intrigues that keeps cropping up to the point where you couldn't care less who they are and why they are even in the story. This book readd like a filler. There were moments when he touched on characters in the first two Foreland books which were much more interesting to read, but it was like watching soaps where each character gets his or her five minute in the sun. Even thought he is an excellent writer, this story just couldn't hold my attention. I found myself skipping chunk of the book till the end.

Seriously, wait for it to come out in paperback. This book is a filler.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good.......2005-05-10

I very much enjoyed the other books in this series, but this one was, to me, very disappointing. It was very slow with many, many characters and too many states/provinces with their rulers. I didn't see any need for the child or love interest.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER IN THE SERIES.......2005-04-04

David, David, David....I have just one thing to say...write faster! This series has gotten better and better, and I can hardly wait to see what happens next. I couldn't put this book down and it is an amazing piece of fantasy. If you've never given David B. Coe a chance, here's your chance. This is some really intriguing, well-written fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Another great piece of work from David Coe.......2005-02-22

Coe really does a nice job building the intrigue level between the humans and the Qirsi. Definitely a palpable tension between the Qirsi serving as ministers and their respective dukes, etc. That's a credit to Coe.

Coe continues to build on the layers he established in the first two books, in particular Grinsa and his relationship to Tavis and Cressane.

I definitely would rank Coe's work right up there with the best. He probaby isn't as wide a scope or as deep as Martin and Erikson, but he's very, very good. I Highly recommend that you read this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great continuation of the Series.......2005-02-15

This is the third book in David Coe's five book series entitled "Winds of the Forelands".
I am finding that each book is better than the book before.
If you have read the other books the story just gets deeper and more interesting as the story proceeds.
The intrigue, betrayals, and hardships that some of the characters have to go through are amazing.
The changing of alliances and repercussions will even make you wonder whom to trust.
The story is original and refreshing.
Mr Coe is one of the authors whose titles I am always waitng for the new one to come out.
And this one was no exception and well worth the wait because of the publication delays in the title coming out.
I can not wait for the next book in this exciting series.

This is one of the better Reteif books. I like the whole series for the sense of humor Keith Laumer has. Reteif is a 6ft. hunk of a hero with a sidekick who happens to be his boss (at least on paper). He never follows directions from the home office but uses his head to fix the situation and defeat the Groaci. Keith is very funny and had several years as a military atache with the diplomatic corps that makes his satirical style even more fun. A great read for someone looking for a few chuckles on a rainy day.

                        Book Description

                        INTRODUCTION
Vietnam is a country of natural beauty with a coastline of sandy beaches stretching about 2000 miles (3225 km) from the northern to the southern tip of the South China Sea. Along the coast, fishing is the main livelihood. The majority of Vietnamese people are Kinh race people (87%) with the
remaining of 53 different ethnic minority groups. For more than 2000 years, the country has been subjected to a near continuing series of foreign occupations from China, France, Japan, and America. One consequence of these occupations is the lasting influence on Vietnamese cuisine. Among Vietnamese
dishes, perhaps the best known in the West is Pho, a noodle soup. Another is the deep-fried spring roll called Nern in the north, and Cha Goi in the south. Rice is a staple food used as a side dish, or a main dish when combined with other ingredients, such as beef, pork, chicken, or seafood.
Vietnamese dishes consist of many different blends of herbs and spices. Most dishes are not fiery hot, nor greasy. Seafood and vegetarian dishes like An Chay are very popular. Today, Vietnamese cuisine is gaining increased international attention due to the fact that it is quite healthy.

This book is an introduction to a new generation for a delicious journey through Vietnamese cuisine. While the combination of flavors may seem experimental to some, they will result in a savory experience. All ingredients used in these recipes can be found in supermarkets, natural food stores or in
Asian food markets. It is our pleasure to share these quick and delicious Vietnamese recipes with you. Enjoy the good nutrition that comes with it.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, easy, and delicious........2007-09-01

This book is excellent for beginners who want to cook Vietnamese food. The author, Andre Nguyen, is a Vietnamese chef who owns a Vietnamese restaurant, so he knows how to cook very well. The recipes have only a few ingredients that are easy to find in a Vietnamese market or other Southeast Asian markets, and they taste delicious. This book along with Diana My Tran's "The Vietnamese Cookbook" are two of the easiest Vietnamese cookbooks to cook from for beginners or homecooks who want to put food on the table fast! The major difference between this book and Diana My Tran's book is that this book seems to include more "restaurant-esque" recipes. Diana My Tran is not a chef, and she includes Vietnamese recipes that she cooks at home in her book. The recipes in Andre's book are simple but at the same time "sophisticated", meaning you won't be embarrassed serving them to guests. I bought serveral copies as gifts. If you want 100% authentic Vietnamese recipes which will take hours to prepare, then this book is not for you. But if you want delicious Vietnamese recipes that have been simplified for beginners or for homecooks, then this book is definitely for you. I highly recommend this book for its quick, easy, and delicious recipes. This book also has great color photos of every recipe, so they're very helpful. I really, really like this book. I hope Andre will write another one. One last thing...there are many recipes in Andre's book that are not in Diana My Tran's book and vice versa. It would be a good idea to buy both books because I like them both.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures!!.......2007-07-06

I'm Viet but I was born in America. I only learned how to cook a couple of Vietnamese dishes from my parents but I have been looking for a good cookbook. This one is my favorite so far! There are pictures of every dish AND step by step pictures! SOOOO helpful! And because there are pictures of each dish, I recognized almost all of them even if I didn't know exactly what it was called.

This book is PERFECT for me (the amateur cook wanting to replicate Vietnamese homecooking for my own family)!

                        5 STARS!!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Quic & Easy Cookbook.......2007-05-22

I used 4 recipes from this book so far. All were easy to make and very delicious. I can't wait to make the rest

5 out of 5 stars The best Vietnamese cook book yet........2007-04-09

I have gone through many expensive Vietnamese cook books and have not used a single recipe out of them because they're difficult or "it's not the way my mom made it." This book show pictures of the ingredients so you know what to look for in an Asian store and pictures of the end product. If I don't know the name of a dish I can look at the picture and recognize it. I tried learning from my mom but as everyone knows most women from Vietnam don't measure, it's a little of this and some of that. So some of the time my recipes are just right and other times they weren't. My mom would try to explain what a certain ingredient was but would not know the English name for it. This book explains it all. Very easy to follow recipes and they turn out just like "the way my mom made it."

                        4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-02-09

I've tried about half of the receipes in this book and it taste great! I love the simple instructions and pictures of all the items you need to make the entree. Wish all cookbooks were like this! Although I have to say they used the wrong wrap for making the eggrolls. The one they pictured isn't ideal for deep frying.

I borrowed this book and the other two in collection from library first to see if I wanted to purchase. I do not. The variety (you need all 3 books) and photos were wonderful. But NO DATES. You have absolutely no idea when any of these tins were made. I personally want some idea even if rounded out to decade or two. If this is not as important to you as it is me than great book.

Scholars understand these descriptions in a general way; but the precision of the expressions remains a mystery. In this work, one of the most important of these words, thumos, is examined in each of its contexts. This synchronic formulaic analysis is carried out according to the contexts of thumos: the cognitive/intellectual, the emotional, and the physical. Two additional contexts, deliberation and motivation, are discussed separately. Within the discussion of each context, the functional synonyms of thumos, particulary phren/phrenes, and other frequent associates of thumos, are examined. Thumos has associations with words relating to winds and storms, a fact which helps clarify its significance in all contexts. Because this work is a discussion of thumos in all contexts, and also contains an appendix of the relevant passages, it should be useful to scholars engaged in research on Homeric vocabulary.

                            Book Description

In recent centuries a whole range of exact systems has been developed in order to describe and categorize spoken and written communication: phonologically, morphologically, syntactically, semantically, pragmatically, stylistically. But there is nothing similar for visual and audio communication, despite the fact that the importance of these media has increased dramatically over the last 200 years. Attempts to develop various systems for the deployment of archives and databases in the work of artists, with the goal of developing interactive, dynamic artworks in which the database plays an active role, were undertaken during a series of masterclasses organized by V2_ in association with the Zentrum fr Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karslruhe, Ars Electronica Center in Linz and the Center for Culture and Communication in Budapest. In this publication, specialists in the field of image, sound and interaction--Lev Manovitch, Sher Doruff, Joel Ryan and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, together with Brian Massumi--share their visions for the use of databases and archives in their particular area of expertise.

                            Book Description

First published in 1989, I Dream a World, a collection of 75 portraits, has become a landmark in publishing history. Now the 10th anniversary of this book is being celebrated with this completely revised and updated edition that charts the achievements of a remarkable group of African-American women and their continued impact on the world.

Many changes have occurred since Brian Lanker set out to capture the faces of both the prominent and unsung women who've made a difference. Sixteen of the original 76 women are no longer among us, including Septima Clark, Barbara Jordan, Clara McBride (Mother) Hale, and Betty Shabazz. But, as this new edition reveals, all of them have left behind an enduring legacy for future generations.

Most importantly, in revising and updating I Dream a World, we celebrate not only the event of its publication, but the continued achievements of an extraordinary group of women who remain vitally alive as role models for the next century.

I was given this book when I was a freshman in architecture college. When I saw Ms Sklarek, I immediately wrote the publisher and got her addres and wrote her a letter. To my surprise she wrote back to me and her later inspired me to continue studying architecture. Now...17 years and three degrees later I came across her name again during a conversation and I decided to contact her again and again, she sent me her business card. Since our architectural firm has a committee that procures speakers, I plan to invite her to my firm to give a presentation on Women in Architecture. So, I said all that to say...not only should we find our mentors, but we should also communicate with them whenever we can.

I was blessed to recieve this book in 1990 as a gift from a dear friend. Throughout the years this book has been a form of encouragement in my daily life through various things. Once my daughter turned ten we sat down together and read through I DREAM A WORLD, She was captivated. I have now passed this book on to my daughter and she proudly displays it in her room with trophies, clay art, pictures, and souviners.

This is such a beautiful, respectable book! The portraits & stories of AA are profound & present fantastic role models for today's young AA girls. A hearty "thank you" to those responsible for compiling & publishing this book!

5 out of 5 stars It encourages one's own dreams!.......2003-04-25

I Dream a World is inspiring in its beautiful photography and the brief stories it shares about the women in the pictures. While it touches on their life stories, this book shares these women's thoughts. That is what draws me closer to this book each time I open it. The women inside, and the book itself, will make you think about your dreams and encourage you to work towards them.

No matter what your race or gender, give this book to anyone who needs encouragement. I especially enjoy recommending this book to young women who can learn a lot from the women within its pages.

I DREAM A WORLD is a most excellent book. The photographs of the women are like portraits of their souls. What makes this book so wonderful is that each woman's story is told in her own words. This is more of the real history. Everyone should read this book because it is not only black history or women's history, it is American history.

With energy, range, and a clear detailed vision of Native cultures, issues, and history, Portrait of the Peoples captures the epic story of Native America from a unique and intimate perspective. The powerful discussion is enhanced with nearly 200 photographs and illustrations, many of them from Native sources. "I am grateful that Native people have been contributors to this project," writes Dennis Banks in the foreword. "No longer will we have to sift though non-Indian writings looking for shreds of the truth." Edited by Duane Champagne, director of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center and of Chippewa descent, Native America thoughtfully articulates the values, struggles, triumphs, and spirit of Native communities and features hundreds of biographies of prominent historical figures and current leaders. Seventeen chapters written by experts with a diversity of viewpoints cover current and historical issues surrounding Native history and culture, protest movements, language, religion, health practices, art, literature, and media. Extensive information on Canadian Natives is also provided. Portrait of the Peoples should serve as a standard reference for anyone interested in Native cultures and issues.

                              Book Description

The creative team behind the smash hit Crowns:Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats returns with a glorious tour of the spirit of Harlem—a collection of fifty stunning black-and-white photographs and unforgettable interviews that capture the heart and soul of one of the most famous and vibrant neighborhoods in the world.
Harlem, long known as the epicenter of black cultural life in America, is undergoing a radical change. An unprecedented infusion of hundreds of millions of dollars in development capital is revitalizing the community and transforming a cityscape marred by decades of poverty. In a striking show of exuberance, upscale shops are materializing in once-abandoned buildings, new homes are popping up in vacant lots, and sheets of glass twinkle in place of grim, boarded-up windows. The economic renewal has lured a host of new people to the neighborhood—doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, and even a former president. But it has also posed a threat to many residents who have lived through the worst of times and now fear that they will lose their homes and livelihoods as boom times sweep in.
Spirit of Harlem documents this extraordinary period of transition through the words and faces of newcomers and longtime residents alike. There are reminiscences of Harlem during the 1920s through the 1960s, stories of friends and families gathering at churches, in local shops, and on the streets, and thoughts on what the future holds for the neighborhood.
Millions of tourists visit Harlem each year, and many people in the United States can trace their roots to this legendary area or have read about its remarkable history and impact on American life and culture. In more than fifty stunning portraits and essays, Spirit of Harlem brings all its splendor, rancor, drama, and glamour vividly to life.

The voices of Spirit of Harlem:

“The minute you step out your door, everything in Harlem is in your face. There is a beauty and a poetry in all that . . .” —Lana Turner, real estate broker

“Bubba and me thought Harlem was Heaven, all the lights and the sights. I asked my aunt, ‘Where do all the white people live?’” —Rev. Betty Neal

“When I came up from the subway, I said, ‘Oh man, I'm lost!’ But then I saw the Apollo and it blew me away. I said, ‘Wow, this is it! I’m in Harlem!’ I had never been to Harlem before, but I just knew I belonged here.” —Bryan Collier, author and artist

SPIRIT OF HARLEM: A Portrait of America's Most Exciting Neighborhood
by Craig Marberry and Michael Cunningham is a beautiful book filled with two page pictorial accounts of famous and not so famous people and places that make up Harlem USA. Places such as the famed Abyssinian Baptist Church, the Harlem Hospital, to the Harlem YMCA, the Dance Theatre of Harlem to Hats by Bunn. It also serves as a historical account because the author and photographer delve into the heart and soul of Harlem's past that made it the elite capital it was for African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance. SPIRIT OF HARLEM opens with a foreword by Gordon Parks, which sets the tone for this collection, and is followed by the author and photographer's insight into their first glance of Harlem. This collection of narrations also provides a sequencing of accounts by current and former residents of all ages and nationalities with candid black and white photographs of the subjects highlighted. Most photographs include a building, which serves as a backdrop or a tangible item that is featured in the story that follows. The first person accounts are encouraging, heartfelt and humorous as well as dismal and oppressive.

SPIRIT OF HARLEM showcases traditional and non-traditional professions such as a former activist, an art dealer, artists, a bookstore owner, a chess player, Chief Executive Officers, a choreographer, a nun, an opera singer, a real estate broker and a social worker. Other professions include a fencer, funeral parlor owners, an Asian gospel singer, a Caucasian graphic designer, hair braiders, historians, a journalist, a literary agent, a law firm partner, medical doctors, ministers and church deacon, a photographer, a restaurant owner and spa owners, along with a myriad of other professions.

One of my favorite narrations is by Isabel Powell, the first wife of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The former Mrs. Powell tells a humorous short story of their meeting, her occupation, his father's rejection of her and finally, her feelings upon their divorce. Another is Kevin Taylor, a producer for Black Entertainment Television and his recollection of the Harlem Shake, a gyrating dance that took the teens of Harlem and the country by storm. Finally, Ron Clark, a Caucasian, southern, male teacher who moved from the South to teach in Harlem; his tactics for winning parental involvement and the buy-in from his students.

Some people have a distorted perception of this island within an island but SPIRIT OF HARLEM validates the fact that historically and currently there is much to see, do and learn about Harlem. SPIRIT OF HARLEM is a treasured collectible that provides a journey into a rich past.

This book has fascinating stories of ordinary and extraodinary people. For each person interviewed, there is a picture or 2 and a story told by that individual. The writer did an excellent job at capturing these stories in first person...i felt like I was actually sitting in front of these people and listening to them tell me about a moving incident, their childhood, reflections on life... Some of these stories made me laugh and some made me cry. It was a neat experience to "meet" all these interesting people. The photography is beautiful

As a Native New Yorker, It does me proud to see fellow New Yorkers talk about Harlem, past, present and future. I have enjoyed this book as well as Crowns(I own them both),and it is such a treasure to see Harlem at its finest. This book is highly recommended.

Spirit of Harlem is a wonderful treasure of a book. Looking at the photographs and reading the interviews is like going on a journey. Your eyes take in every color and every shape; your ears take in every sound, every smell, and you can hear the people's voices, some ordinary, some famous, yet they all ring loud and rise from these pages.

I've never read anything like this book, one that forces you to laugh and cry at the same time. One that opens up your eyes to a world that you didn't really existed. It's a flavor-filled coffee table book bursting with wondrous history. And it truly embodies the human spirit as the voices of people from different races and cultures all share their common bond of living and/or working in Harlem.

The Spirit of Harlem is just that - a spirit of discovery that races through from the pages and causes you to learn things you've never heard before. Even if you've haven't been to Harlem, the book makes you proud and happy to know that such a place exists. This important and heartwarming book is highly recommended.

In writing his "Self-Portrait of Black America," anthropologist, folklorist, and humanist John Gwaltney went in search of "Core Black People"-the ordinary men and women who make up black America-and asked them to define their culture. Their responses, recorded in Drylongso, are to American oral history what blues and jazz are to American music. If the people in William H. Johnson's and Jacob Lawrence's paintings could talk, this is what they would say.

I learned allot about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and that there were also white indentured servants. This book has over 5oo biographical essays on some of the most important Africans in our history. It covers music to religion and science to sports, ranging over a 400 years period. I love reading it and learning about a part of American History that was left out of my history classes.

I would recommend it to all students in school and all students of life.

Our Common Ground is the best kind of inspirational non-fiction, because it's not some famous person TELLING us how to live our lives to the fullest, it's a collection of "regular" people DOING just that!

OCG is the perfect gift for a young person (or any person for that matter) whom you would like to inspire to become all they were created to be.

                                5 out of 5 stars Better Than "I Dream A World"..........1999-11-25

Not that "I Dream A World" was bad, but in my eyes it clearly lacked something. That "something" was a personal connection with the subjects. Mr. Caines' photographs and text show his obvious appreciation, respect and fascination with his subjects. Unlike "IDAW", the photography in "Our Common Ground" reflects a sensitivity and loyalty to the individuality of the PEOPLE they depict--not the photographic style of the photographer.

                                Wonderful photographs. Captivating reading. Bravo!

What a wonderful collection of photographs and stories. I stumbled upon this photo essay at a book store and had to take it home. For so long the positive role models for and within the African-American community have supposedly been athletes and entertainers. Mr. Caines' vision is broader, deeper and more realistic than that. A female engineer on the Long Island Railroad; a female stonemason creating sculpture for a Harlem cathedral; a fifteen-year-old boy in Oregon chooses not to end up like his mother, killed in a drug deal, stops selling crack in his neighborhood and becomes and honor roll student; one of 11 astrophysicists of African descent in America all are our modern day, next door neighbor role models. The inclusion of a few celebrities in this gorgeous book brought a whole new dimension to personalities like Bryant Gumbel for me.

Beautiful photography, and intimate narrative profiles by this author brought joy to my heart and a tear to my eye. Makes makes me wish =I= were African American!
