The Mellower Justice.......2007-08-06
Justice accompanies his friend Alexandra Templeton to the remote Haunted Springs Hotel, where they uncover evidence relating to a race-related murder that happened many years before. Justice is still on Prozac, and he's a mellower hero, though still putting himself in danger periodically. My favorites are still the earlier books.

Not His Best.......2006-09-21
While it is still worth a read (although you may want to wait for the paperback),this is my least favorite installment of the Benjamin Justice series. I was disappointed because the book was nowhere near the excellence I had come to expect from John Morgan Wilson. In my opinion, the story was formulaic and trite, compared to Wilson's other books. Other descriptions that come to mind are pale, tame, and completely lacking in punch, compared to his other work. Most authors suffer in comparison to John Morgan Wilson, and in Rhapsody in Blood, unfortunately, so does he.
A winner.......2006-06-15
Mr. Wilson, yet again, spins a very interesting tale with interesting characters. This one seems a bit like an old hollywood mystery movie. Lonely hotel, stranded guests, rainy night, and the old "one of you in this room is a murderer" type atomosphere. I loved it.
I like that BJ seems a bit more mature and I'm so glad he's off Prozac. I have nothing against Prozac, but his last adventure it seemed to focus of his life and it irritated me. :)
This is why we read mysteries . . . .......2006-05-18
John Morgan Wilson's books have always been filled with beautifully drawn characters, especially his lead storyteller, Benjamin Justice. The stories are richly layered, and each one has become darker than the last. Rhapsody in Blood is as compelling as every other book in the way it gently but surely draws you into the mystery, but it's a definite departure from the world in which the other stories take place. Justice is lured away from Los Angeles for what is supposed to be a mountain resort getaway and gets pulled very quickly into a mystery that spans generations and leads to killing in a remote hotel occupied by a handful of people with many potential motives for murder. It's amazingingly engaging . . . a true page turner. It's also a pleasant sojourn from the rest of the Justice series -- by taking the action away from West Hollywood and the broader Los Angeles area it becomes a different kind of story, with less emphasis on Justice's downward psychological spiral and more on the characters around him. It might have been inspired, in part, by Chandler's The Lady in the Lake, given the sequestered setting and the layers of corruption that conceal what really happened in the 1950s murder that sets the current story on its course. And it should be a must-read for anyone who's drawn to character-driven mysteries that become more complex with every page. It's a unique -- and standout -- entry to this amazing series.
Justice At Midlife.......2006-04-07
Benjamin Justice returns after having just finished his memoirs. He is fast approaching fifty, has a paunch but still has his elderly landlords Maurice and Fred, although they have very little to do with the plot of Wilson's latest. Justice and his good friend Alexander Templeton go to a resort hotel in a place called Haunted Springs; she to work on a story, he just along for the ride. Of course he takes with him Walter Mosley's CINNAMON KISS for reading. (Mr. Wilson always plays tribute to this other fine mystery writer by referring to him in each of his own mysteries.) What evolves of course is a tale that spans 50 years involving murder, suicide and lynching. There is a motley group of characters: a vicious reporter intent on "outing" someone in order to revive her sagging career; a gorgeous Adonis whom Justice develops an immediate crush on; a lippy midget stuntman; an out-of-control child actress who has made her fortune making "slasher" movies, a rapper who travels with a bodyguard; a hotel owner who insists on playing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" over and over, a piece that is much overplayed in these United States-- you actually can hear the piece and wish desperately half way through the novel that he would play something else-- a Latino detective on crutches, and several characters long since dead but who come to life as Justice gets involved in all that has happened at this strange hotel, plus a half dozen or so others.
Mr. Wilson works out the plot with intricate details and rather slowly, almost too slowly at times. There is not a murder until 100 pages into the story. We are pretty sure who is going to get taken out; and from the evidence that Justice sees, as he is the first person to view the crime scene, the list of suspects is narrowed down to two. At times the novel takes on the feel of DON'T LOOK NOW except Justice keeps seeing someone in a yellow dress rather than a child in red.
As always, Mr. Wilson is interested in serious subjects; this time they are racism, the injustice of the criminal justice system, the touchy subjects of outing and men who have sex with other men but see themselves as straight. At times his prose becomes almost poetic when he writes on the things he cares about: outing, lynching in America, rap music, facing the truth about our history. "Do we truly heal-- as individuals, families, communities, nations-- if we choose to remember selectively, to recall only that which is acceptable and comforting, to recreate lives in place of the truth?"
RHAPSODY IN BLOOD may not be Mr. Wilson's best book but is certainly well worth reading.

Watching my favorite hero walk quietly into "the light"........2007-08-01
This trade paperback wraps up the Peter David storyline of Genis-vel's return from insanity. I loved the charachters, the story, and the art. I only gave a 4 star review because I was slightly dissapointed with how fast the end unraveled and how unceremoniously Genis was taken away from us. However, all hope is not lost, because I believe the "door" remains open for more exploration into this charachter and his companions. All in all, it's a beloved part of my collection that I will go back and visit often.
A powerful end to the series with a weak epilogue.......2005-02-22
After the "insane" storyline that filled the previous 3 volumes of this series, we see the return of the "normal" Genis. His sister (wanting to be the new Captain Marvel, if he would just give up the name) is still here. We also see the return of Marlo, Magus, Moondragon, and a few other surprises. The main baddie of this story makes it even more intense (not gonna spoil it for you). But let me say, the ending to this storyline is probably the most powerful of any comic in the last decade. What "The Death of the Phoenix" did for the X-Men, this could have done for Captain Marvel. Unfortunately, by the time this came out the book was well on its way to cancellation, so nobody really caught it.
The only downside to this excellent story is the final issue, sort of an "Epilogue" to the series that really wasn't the least bit necessary. You come out of an incredibly intense storyline, followed by an unforgettable ending, and then they throw this strange light-hearted farewell in there that wasn't necessary. I wish the series had ended one issue sooner. I mean, Genis came back in Thunderbolts #1 (died again, but still...) so it wasn't necessary for the "go into the light" scenario.
All in all, this is the best of the 4 volumes of CM available in this series. It has everything that made the series great: time travel (ala Avengers Forever), great sub-plots, TONS of action, and character growth (again, the ending shows a maturity in Genis that we'd never seen up to that point). I highly recommend it...just skip the final story in it.

Joy Riding Through The Universe.......2003-04-04
Loved this book. Interesting perspectives and great topics on who we are as human beings. The book covers a wide breadth of subject matter with in-depth explanations in short articles. It's one of those books you can re-read and pick up new insights. I definately resonated with it and would recommend it for all inquiring minds.
Joyride.......2003-03-31
From a higher perspective, a gentle, illuminating look at humanity as we express the divine in simple and profound ways. This 'joyride' of a read left me more in love with myself, our reality and our & the endless cosmic dance. Highly recommended!
Over and over.......2003-03-14
I have had this book for several years now. I have also given this book as gifts to many friends. I am constantly using this book for reference and to uplift my day to day life. It doesn't matter how many time I open it, I find something new over and over again. If you are interested in Channeled material and/or looking for a new way to view life and this reality, this book is a must!
Better Than You Can Imagine!.......2003-03-14
This is the most satisfying book I have ever read, in that it lays the basis for the creation and evolution of humankind from the perspective of our own Inner Being/soul ancestry and heritage. JoyRiding weaves the story of a group of Old Bored Gods who felt they had done everything there was to do in the Universe. In order to relieve their boredom, they came up with a plan to birth a new universe that would create a new species of universal entity in the process. This new species would have the ability to be its own source, it would be a creator, and it would be its own Self. (A Self is a universal species of entity that mirrors or reflects what is within it. A Self is able to retain a single compressed cell of itself, go into a source from where that cell originated and reconstitute the entity after coming back out of the source.) No other entity in the universe, other than a Self, can reemerge out of a source intact; most entities that go into sources simply merge back into the whole rather than retaining their own individual identity. When this new species of entity is birthed, which is the path all humans on are, Divine Human will be born.
If you are ready to have your mind be warped and expanded beyond where other channeled works have taken you before, I'm sure you will enjoy reading this book. JoyRiding the Universe explores and gives the basis for the current paradigm that is occurring on this planet --- the fact that God is within and has been all along.
NEW STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR CHANNELD MATERIAL.......2000-02-22
For anyone interested in channeled material, this book is a must. Having read Cayce, Seth, Bringers on the Dawn and many many others, this book held my attention like no other book I have read in a long time. It presented facsinating material on a rich diversity of topics. I would strongly recommend it.

Don't go to Napa without this book!.......2007-05-31
Have been to Napa many times - but was unaware of the many gems this book uncovers - an incredible and fun resource for the food and wine lover! I will be seeking out these finds in the future! Highly recommended.
Great overview of Napa.......2005-08-16
This book covers all the areas I was interested in learning about before our trip to Napa Valley. The reviews seem unbiased and thoughtful. We had visited Napa 18 years ago and while we already had a few ideas, reservations, etc., this guide gave us even more places to consider. I've "earmarked" so many pages and even took this guide with us. It also includes maps, addresses and phone numbers and/or websites. Some good recipes are in the back. A good companion guide.
a great resource, even for locals..........2003-04-24
As a regular visitor to the Napa Valley for the past 10 years, it's easy to think that one has 'seen it all.'
This book really reminded me what a special place the Napa Valley is, and how much there is to discover. Visitors and locals alike will find something new and interesting that they simply must try.
Take this book with you to the Valley, or read it before you go and find your new 'must try' discovery.
Fun in the wine country.......2003-03-26
This is a must have for anyone visiting or living in the Napa Valley. Well organized and cleverly composed. I found it most useful for locating the rare-to-find places and foods that make the Napa Valley so unique. It makes a great gift for all the food lovers in your life.

Basic, Not Breed Specific.......2007-09-20
When I first got this book, I was extremely excited to learn about the "king of toys", but once I started reading it, I began to quickly lose interest in it. Why?
Well, for starters, this book contained very little about the breed itself, save the standard. Most of the information was for people who had never before owned a dog in their life. Since I own four dogs already and I am a dog groomer, I was expecting more from this book.
Frankly, I would only recommend this book to absolute novices who know nothing about feeding, exercise, or basic grooming. For anyone who has been in contact with a dog for 24 consecutive hours, I'd say skip this book and try one of the books in the Kennel Club or Terra Nova series.
Useful and well organized book.......2007-01-27
I was very happy with the how quickly I was sent the book. I was needing the information asap and the seller really impressed me. I have ordered other books from other sellers and have waited 4 weeks only to be told that they no longer have that book. I was impressed with the information and details in the book. It is very user friendly and one can quickly find the specific section needed with the great table of contents. I ordered the book for the training information and was happy with that as well. I would definitely recommend this book to other Min Pin owners.
Good MinPin book.......2006-05-31
It's a pretty good breed specific book. The book does include a valuable amount of information and most of the pictures are pretty attractive. I found the health section to be of particular use. Still, the presentation could have been a little better.
A great hand book for new owners of a Min Pin.......2001-03-11
Being a first time owner of a Min Pin I wanted to learn more about the breed. I bought several books about Min Pins and found "Miniature Pinschers" by Jacqueline O'Neil to contain all of the information I wanted at a very good price. The book contains information on the history of Min Pins, characteristics and standards, selecting a puppy, housebreaking and other training, feeding, Health and dental care, behavior, and caring for a Min Pin. It is more concise than another book that I bought but it contained the same information. It is full of beautiful colorful pictures. I highly recommend this book.

A FAVORITE IN MY LIBRARY!.......2004-07-10
Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham are two of my favorite quilt authorities, since I am attracted to the vintage, antique, and bold and splashy quilts of the past, as it seems they are. They have an array of quilt block patterns (24 rose and tulip), that can be easily used to make any of the antique or reproduction quilts the authors have presented in their book.
The history included with the different block designs and antique quilts is just a plus. This book is jam packed with inspiration.
This is not, however, a book for beginner quilters, insofar as instructions for beginning applique, quilting, etc. is not included; but the authors did not intend for this to be such. Instead...there is a section entitled "How We Work" which, in my opinion, is more valuable to know, since one can easily obtain information on lessons of standard applique and quilting.
Very charming book and an asset in any quilter's libray.

Book Description
The poet's journey begins in the heart. Here is a memoir from a poet that reminds us to pursue writing as much as love.
Moving beyond the loss of both his father and brother, E. Ethelbert Miller tells the story of how love survived in his family. When Miller was about ten years old, his father told him how he could have left his mother. Years later, now a writer and a father, Miller looks back on that simple remark and how it shaped him. In Fathering Words, Miller explores his development as an African American writer, the responsibility of his chosen career, and his ambitions to raise the consciousness of black people. Gradually, Miller comes to see that when his father told him he could have left his mother that he was attempting to raise his consciousness. In his own way, his father was warning Miller not to take things for granted, that one's own world could easily and quickly change. And in his quiet way that he loved him.
Miller's poetry often relies on the voices of women. Here in Fathering Words, Miller has chosen to write his memoir in two voices. He places his sister's voice on the page next to his own. The result is a wonderful duet that tells two stories woven together into one.
Fathering Words is Miller's moving tribute and a powerful memoir.

Fathering Grief and Discovering Love.......2003-03-25
Fathering Words portrays the grief and loss one man feels when his father and brother suddenly die within two years of each other. Their deaths cause Miller to recall how seldom he and his father spoke, and yet, he always knows his father loves the family. That singular way one person cares for and remembers another is at the spiritual core of this book. What does a son inherit from the men in his family when there are few conversations? Miller compares his life and his dreams to that of his older brother, and maps out the goals for his own future as he marries, has his own children, and embarks on his career as a poet. He punctuates the story with the gracious voice of his older sister, Marie, as he imagines how the family might have looked to her. Marie carries the secrets and stories that filter down to the younger son as rumors and tales. She becomes a source of information and verification of the family history. Using a network of subtle references to religion, classical and jazz music, basketball and baseball, as well as motifs from literary works, Miller provides a number of avenues by which a broad spectrum of readers will be able to enter and inhabit his poignant text.
For those who want to write about their own lives, the book provides a model for creating scenes in small vignettes that become interconnected by the end of the chapter, as opposed to providing a direct narrative path from the beginning of a life to the present. For writers who aspire to become published, and perhaps even famous, Miller chronicles the encounters he has with a number of writers, revealing the history of African American literature in the past thirty years.

A gift from heaven.......2002-06-18
If I had received this book five years ago, it would have saved me five years of pain and confusion. Fathering Words is the tangible witness of a man's journey into and through his writing life. Unlike many writing memoirs, it is not a how to, or even a how, but a detatched narrative of his life as a poet. He is eerily objective about the mistakes and choices he has made, and uses occasional passages from his sister to broaden the view he gives the reader.
I learned more about the writing process, more about the yearning that true writers feel, and more about the lack of understanding that non-artists have about the whys and wherefores. If you know an African-American man who yearns to "father words", buying this book for him will be the best show of support you can give him.
Remarkable.......2001-06-04
Fathering Words is a deeply moving memoir. Ethelbert Miller's description of his father will remain with the reader for a very long time. His decision to write the book using both his and his sister's voice is unique and it works. It's definitely a keeper.
Poetic Fathering.......2000-11-01
This book is so beautifully written, so touchingly direct that I called Howard University to search out the author and tell him what a compelling book he had written. Anyone who is a father, about to be a father or contemplating being a father (whether African-American or not) will find this book touching in what it says about the frequently mute love between fathers and their sons. African-Americans families are often love mutes like Mr. Miller's-- too busy working, too focused on the quotidien to express love outside provision of food and shelter. Out of such silent, seemingly fallow ground, E. Ethelbert Miller heaps up words of love and power, fathering not only his own father, but his whole family in some of the most poetic prose you will ever read.
