Sometimes books are out of print for a reason........2007-05-31
I'm having a difficult time figuring out who the intended audience for this book might be. Fans of good mysteries will be turned off by the gaping holes in the plot. Similarly, aficionados of hardboiled crime will be disappointed in the narrative's lack of grittiness and its careful avoidance of anything truly depraved. And readers who appreciate good, believable writing irrespective of genre will also be unsatisfied since the novel's plentiful dialogue is thoroughly unconvincing.
When all is said and done, Say It With Bullets is a rather far fetched
action-adventure tale with a touch of romance that is equally far fetched. Yes, the book is fast paced and contains a number of mildly amusing quips. But, overall, I would not recommend this pulp fiction relic.
An Absurdly Funny Premise Leading to Solidly Entertaining Noir .......2006-08-09
Admittedly, the premise of "Say It With Bullets" is completely absurd and riddled with the kind of coincidences that would spoil other works begging more serious regard. The hilarity of the first chapter coupled with many tongue-in-cheek nuances peppered throughout is a clear signal that the author understands this, if not by all members of his audience. Bill Wayne, searching for the unknown army buddy who has twice shot and left him for dead, has booked a pre-packaged bus tour of the West that just happens to hit each of the cities his friends have settled in. Bill imagines this as the perfect cover for dodging the man who's after him while making his other pals talk, but he hasn't counted on the unwanted romantic attention of the beautiful tour guide who happens to be from his past. Bill is intent on deadly serious business while his fellow pleasure-seeking tourists are left confounded over his anger and intent to be left alone. Once you've laughed through this premise, the action moves breathlessly forward, delivering a unique blend of traditional noir mixed with humor and a grand finale reminiscent of Hitchcock. Though no one, obviously including the author, really aspires for this material to reach the status of a genre classic, "Say It with Bullets" remains satisfying entertainment and is a joyful rediscovery.
When it's time to say goodbye... Say It With Bullets.......2006-06-14
The jamoke in the UPS truck screeched to a halt in front of my house. He walked up the sidewalk carrying a box. There was a hint of menace in his saunter. By habit, I checked my shoulder holster to ensure it was in place. Anything could be in that brown box. A severed head. Tickets to the Ice Capades. Wind chimes from Sharper Image. The driver tossed the box at my feet and vamoosed before I had a chance to question him.
I ripped it open only to discover an Amazon shipment of paperback Hard Case Crime books. They looked like they'd been lashed together by Shakey the clown during the last tornado. I grabbed this particular book first. I based that decision on its title alone. In retrospect, it was a bigger mistake than hiring Tony Soprano as a financial advisor. The characters were paper thin, with a plot that was even thinner - aluminum foil, maybe. While the dialogue was snappy with the kind of metaphors that Raymond Chandler would have enjoyed, everything else suffered.
In all seriousness, I'm a huge fan of pulp fiction. But this particular effort was disappointing. Unlike some other veteran authors in the Hard Case series (e.g., Charles Williams), Powell had a better shot of replacing Ethel Merman in Gypsy than getting this book classified as timeless. Apart from some clever phrasing and a decent hook, there isn't much to commend.
A True Classic! Just Optioned By Hollywood!.......2006-05-31
Say It With Bullets is one of those books mystery lovers have talked about since it first appeared 50 years ago. Because it has been out of print so long, copies were extremely hard to come by, making this one something of a Holy Grail among mystery fans.
Well, now, courtesy of Hard Case Crime, the book is back in a handsome paperback edition. This is a great story of revenge yet told with many humorous touches. Bill Wayne, the avenger of the story, returns to the States to determine which of his army buddies shot him in the back and left him for dead. On a bus tour through the states, he tracks down each of his friends and has his revenge. The only problem is he has to cover his tracks from a nosey sherrif and the tour guide whom he is falling in love with. The tension builds nicely in this one, there are moments of great humour although the novel is not the comic romp it is touted as being, nor does it intend to be. The return of Bullets has already garnered much attention. In fact, Hollywood has just optioned it as a movie. So, don't miss this one. If you're a mystery fan, this one will scratch you right where you itch.
Hard-Luck Case.......2006-04-13
As noir goes, there's a bit to enjoy about SAY IT WITH BULLETS, Release Number 16 (with a 'bullet' at least in the title) in the largely stellar run of Dorchester Publishing Company's "Hard Case Crime" imprint. There's Bill Wayne, a wronged man left for dead with a bullet to the back who's come back to the post-War states after his fellow servicemen who were guilty of the crime. There's a shifty girl-from-his-past named Holly Clark, a teacher-and-tour-guide who willingly (but unwittingly) becomes his sidekick and probable partner-in-crime-of-vengeance. And there's even a fortune in buried treasure at the bottom of a mountain lake for the first sucker willing to risk all odds to find it.
Outside of that, "Bullets" fails to fire. Hawked by Hard Case editors as their first 'comic' entry in the series, the novel fails to really reach the level of comedy but admirably achieve smartaleckyness early on and never loses touch. Through Wayne's eyes, the world is a place where nothing is quite as it seems when the men he's hunting start dropping off like flies ... but not by his doing (though, in noir stories, he's bound to get blamed for it ... and he does!). With the sole exception of some terrific zaniness in the book's second half (Wayne visits a small-time casino to hide out from all of the local folks chasing him only to find he can't lose at games of chance, bringing only more and more eyes on him), author Richard Powell does steward's work of keeping this tale quick but only slightly dirty.
The book's cover advertises "first publication in 50 years," and, after reading it, one might be able to figure out why. It's good, but it isn't THAT good that it needed resurrecting alongside other tales from the Hard Case logo.

Book Description
A new fantasy saga in the tradition of George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones began in Enemy Glory, and continues now in Hecate's Glory. Young Llewelyn is a clerical wizard, one whose power derives not from mere arcane knowledge, but from his symbolic role as a pledged consort of the goddess Hecate. And she is a demanding mistress. After disillusionment in love and in politics, Llewelyn is a disaffected student in a monastery where he has taken refuge, a magician impatient to take on the world. He schemes for revenge and creates a disaster that forces him to leave the monastery and venture again into the wide world. Now, fleeing north to escape the enemy he knows, the Emperor Roguehan, he will encounter new foes, not so easily recognized. He will also meet other wizards and a dragon, befriend a half-elf minstrel, and win the right to claim the throne in the strange land of Gondal. The story opens out into new richness and fantastic adventures.

Wonderfully Insightful........2007-07-02
Karen Michalson has the unmatched ability of missing nothing in her plot or characters. The sheer complexity of the nuances begun in "Enemy Glory" and brought to a sharp conclusion in "Hecate's Glory" is award-worthy. To weave such an intricate plot as well as keep the writing stellar throughout is an uncommon talent amongst today's fantasy writers. The attentive reader will be well rewarded with many insights into universal truths, tidbits of occult wisdom, as well as humorous and astoundingly accurate insights into the character flaws of human beings, which Michalson states unabashedly. I have read this series 3 times over and find new insight each time I leaf through the pages.
A flawless read.
AMW.......2006-08-09
I found this as book as well as Enemy Glory fascinating. The intricate plot kept me deeply intrigued throughout. My favorite thing about these two books are the character development and the beautiful poetic writing style of Karen. I eagerly await more from Karen Michalson. Also----check out Lian Hearn
PLEASE don't waste your money.......2005-12-30
unless you own stock in Tylenol. The prose on the first page of this book is enough to make anyone with a modicum of literary awareness just wince. It's like reading the writing of a self-important fourteen year old who has decided he or she is an author. I can't imagine what anyone saw in this in the first place, but this book hit the wall shortly after I opened it as a gift. There is so much better available out there; don't be deceived by the modestly interesting cover. It's the only interesting thing about the book, and it will give you a headache if you read it.
Michalson does it again!.......2003-08-17
Hecate's Glory is stronger than Enemy Glory because Llewelyn completely comes into his own here. He is evil, but his chief attraction is his conflict with his inner goodness, which is more tragic and exciting here than in Enemy Glory because Michalson brings him out of Kursen Monastery and gives him a chance to make his own decisions in the world. He loves beautiful music and poetry so much he risks his own life to save an imprisoned musician (my favorite scene of many). My other favorite scene is when he helps his new companion, Aeren, kill the wizard Zelar, because it brings out a strange sensitivity in Llewelyn even while he is killing an enemy. That is why I love this character. He is not your usual villain. He is ruthless in his assessment of himself and other people - so ruthless I feel pity for him sometimes, even though he always makes me think. But in a way, that's the strength of this book. Michalson provides an intellectually challenging moral tale that asks hard philosophical questions, something you rarely find in a typical fantasy book. I highly recommend this series.

A masterpiece by one of the original masters.......2001-05-11
I have read this book many times, and have come away amazed each time. One of the things I enjoy most about science fiction is the quality of the ideas it explores, and Williamson's are not only outstanding but bountiful. A lot of casual asides and brief exchanges between characters are rich with ideas that could easily require the length of a book to explore. As one would expect from an author who has been writing and winning awards for as long as he has, the plot, characterizations, style, etc. are all first-rate. Find this book and you will be delighted.
Outstanding.......2000-08-31
One of the best things science fiction can offer is a fresh analysis of what it means to be human. This books delivers on that analysis -- in spades. Ordinarily, a review shouldn't provide a synopsis, but since one is not provided by Amazon.com, I'll provide a brief one
The setting is Earth, one thousand years in the future. The world is populated by human ("premen"), genetically perfected humans ("trumen"), genetically modified soldiers ("mumen") and gods. Many centuries prior, premen had created these other beings, who have now nearly displaced the premen. By order of earth's god, they are to be relocated to a distant and inhospitable world. Two children, a boy and a girl, struggle against their deportation and discover that they may have the key to fighting against the gods, if only they have enough time.
This book is more than just action and kaleidoscopic settings. It's about what it means to be human, what rewards and suffering struggle brings, and about friendship, loyalty and hope. Think of it as sci fi's equivelant to "The Shawshank Redemption." Highly, highly recommended.

Great vegan sweets collection.......2007-08-27
This is a wonderful cookbook filled with sweet treats for vegans and easy to follow recipe instructions. The only gripe that I have with this book is that most of the recipes use maple syrup in large quantities which is not economical for most of us.
Delicious.......2007-08-22
I've eaten the results of these recipes, served by Fran, herself. They are simply delicious. Knowing that they are healthy makes them all the more yummy.

Fool Your Taste Buds Easily.......2007-03-26
If you're new to vegan baking, you're likely to be intimidated by the process, and concerned that the results won't stand up to what you expect and get from your old standards.
Well, fear no more, as expert vegan baker Fran Costigan makes vegan baking easy and you can count on results that will fool your friends, family and loved ones because their taste buds not might not realize that you've given them vegan baked goods and other tasty treats.
Some of my favorite recipes are Mango Pineapple Mousse, Super Fudge Lowfat Brownies and Currant Scones, which I produced with terrific results.
There are wheat-free recipes that work wonders when you get those guests with specific needs, and everyone else will like them, too.
While the recipes are great, even better are the specific instructions and information on equipment, unusual ingredients, and secrets to baking great vegan cakes.
If dessert is on the menu, this is the go-to book on my bookshelf.

Best Book on Baking Ever!.......2007-02-16
I absolutely love this book. Everything in it comes out perfectly. The cranberry apple pie is simply the best pie I've ever had. The chocolate cake recipe is excellent as well.
Kids can lick the bowl... adults too! .......2007-02-14
For my son's 7th birthday he wanted chocolate cupcakes in school. As a mom who makes a living helping parents raise health children, I grabbed "More Great Good Dairy-Free Desserts Naturally" and made the Chocolate Cake...to live for. Only twist was I bought dinosaur molds and made very cool 3-d dinosaur "cupcakes." You should have seen the faces on the kids in his class when we handed these out -- and then lots of mmmm's and smiles after the first bite! I usually bring in frozen bananas for a healthy, dairy free birthday treat, and although those usually go over great, I know my son was so happy to have a cake option this year.
I have to say this book has turned me back into a cool mom in the eyes of my kids. They can't believe when I ask them if they want to bake something with chocolate as one of the ingredients (I'm usually the fruit smoothie, sorbet, fruit salad dessert maker-- all favorites in our home, but even I enjoy indulging in chocolate!).
Whether your family needs to eat dairy free, or you just prefer it as I do, this book is a must buy!

Book Description
Because our relationships with our animal companions are unlike human relationships, the death of a pet is like no other loss that we will experience. In this book, Betty J. Carmack draws on the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, her own experience, and interviews with dozens of pet lovers to guide the reader through the initial loss of a pet to the dawning of new hope and reassurance.
Customer Reviews:
Grieving the Death of a Pet.......2007-08-14
An excellent book to help with the grieving process. Wonderful real life examples of others who have experienced the same overwhelming pain and how they were able to deal with their loss. I would recommend this book for anyone who has lost a pet and is experiencing on-going depression.
The Gift of Betty Carmack and Her Book.......2006-07-15
I have been waiting for Betty Carmack's book all of my life. My feelings have never before been so validated. Throughout childhood, I have had numerous little creatures: hamsters, birds, dogs, turtles, and mice. Now after 45 years, I can finally grieve the loss of those precious creatures without anyone calling me foolish or overly sentimental. No one will ever again tell me that "little boy's don't cry." Little boys cry--right along with the rest of humanity--at the loss of one of these precious companions.
Betty Carmack's decision to let the "experts" be those who have actually grieved the loss of a pet gives her book more validity than if she had quoted from a thousand researchers. We hear the stories of these people and their companion animals through all the stages of grief. Pets are not just "nice things to have a around." They are the truest and most steadfast listeners to all of life's pains and joys. When they die, they leave a hole in our hearts. For some people, their cats or dogs or lizards are their closest companions. Such companions are never too tired to listen. No matter what we look like, whether bathed or not, shaven or not, they hear all that we are and hope to be, uncluttered by "unfinished business" in human relationships. True, they cannot take the place of another human being. Likewise, no human can ever offer the degree of unconditional love that animals, fish, and birds can.
"Grieving the Death of a Pet" is a triumph. It is a gift, given by an expert who was humble enough to let the very people she comforts be our comforters, the very people who know best what we feel and why. How can I thank someone for giving me back my feelings and childhood memories? Thank you, Betty Carmack. Thank you for the gift of your book and the gift of you.
Thank you Ms. Carmack! .......2006-04-25
This book is a touching and insightful look at how people grieve when their beloved pet passes on. Many overlook how pets have helped people get through tough times, and given unconditional love to their owners. I've seen dogs that help heal (in the sense that they give lots of attention and love) people with acute and/or chronic illnesses.
By the same token, many people grieve over the loss of their pets, particularly those who have been in the family household for over five years. Why else would children want to place their animals' remains in a special place in the backyard? Ms. Carmack not only shares people's heartfelt stories, but also gives good insight on just what is needed to get through those tough times. I gave this book to one friend who had lost a cat that he owned for twelve years, and he said that reading it really made a difference to him on that struggle.
To complain that this book doesn't fit a certain person's view on Christianity doesn't do the book justice. Just because pets aren't mentioned in Scripture doesn't mean they aren't important to people and healing. And to discount pets as instruments of God is very sad and lacking insight.
Thankfully, this book doesn't recommend spending thousands of dollars in pet cemeteries. BUT, that's up to the owner and none of other people's business, no?
Just a question .......2006-03-07
FOr the reviewer who does not beleive animals go to heaven. Well why not? Didnt God create animals as well? Why would He discriminate against the most innocent creatures on earth by not letting them into heaven. I just lost my cat whom I considered to be my child and I dearly hope that when I get to heaven that she is waiting there for me. It just shows how egotisitcal human beings can be. I hope others that lose a beloved pet do not share this persons view and look forward to reuniting with their special pet one day.
This Book Could Make You Feel Worse If You Are Grieving.......2005-01-21
My nine-year-old Great Dane just died, and I am devastated. My sister sent me this book because she said that she knew the author and she thought it might help me cope with the loss of my lovely girl.
I am about halfway through this book, and it is actually making me feel worse. The reason that it is making me feel worse is that included in this book are stories where the pet owners -- out of their sheer stupidity, ignorance, and irresponsibility -- actually caused the death of the pets that they should have been protecting.
One pet owner caused their German Shepherd to get heat stroke. Another couple put their friendly Rottweiler to sleep because he had bitten other dogs, and they were afraid he would bite a child. There are numerous other alternatives to euthanasia in circumstances such as those. Even the author caused the death of her first dog by actually pulling her dog overboard into a fast-moving river and then let go of him, causing him to drown. The author never should have jumped in the river herself let alone pull her dog in.
I just can't finish this book because I can't read any more stories where pet owners caused the death of their pets. I am very sensitive in that regard, and I think other animal lovers are the same way. I would never put any of my pets in harm's way like the author did. I know accidents do happen, but many of these people could have and should have been better informed and made better decisions concerning the safety of their pets. Many of these people set the stage for an accident by making a series of bad decisions. This just angers me at a time when I already feel sad.
Furthermore, this book has not told me anything that I did not know already. The author spends a great deal of time letting the reader know that it is okay to grieve over the loss of a pet. It wouldn't have even occurred to me that it wasn't all right to grieve the loss of a pet. You would have to be heartless not to do so.
If you are grieving the loss of a pet, seek comfort in your friends and family and find a different book to comfort you.

Book Description
Before Barack Obama, Colin Powell, and Martin Luther King, Jr., there was Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. -- the most celebrated and controversial black politician of his generation. An astute businessman known as "Mr. Civil Rights," he represented Harlem for twenty-four years in the House of Representatives. He was a man of the cloth and a civil rights leader, but Powell's reputation for flamboyance, arrogance, and womanizing made him his own worst enemy. In this towering and definitive biography, acclaimed journalist Wil Haygood paints a vivid portrait of one of black America's most memorable dignitaries.

Keep the Faith, Baby.......2006-05-01
Wow! For those who don't know about black history and its pioneers, this is for you. Adam Clayton Powell,Jr had laid such a significant path for the civil rights movement, desegregation of the military and public schools. He was in all essence,
"The Baddest Negro in Congress." It was reading this book that inspired me to seek more info to the point that I had arranged for his grandson, Dr.Adam Clayton Powell,IV, to come to my college and speak on the legacy of his grandfather, Adam Clayton Powell,Jr. He gave a wonderful presentation and truly edified those who didn't know much about this great American Hero.
American Biography at its best.......2005-11-07
A dust cover reference states that "King of the Cats" is one of the best biographies of an Americna Politicain to be published in recent years." I could not agree more.
"King of the Cats" sat on a shelf at my house for 10 years or so as one of those books I'll get to eventually. After reading an essay about Adam Clayton Powell, I decided to delve deeper and reached for the book. Two days later I had finished all 400 pages. I'm just sorry that I waited this long to read it.
Haygood not only tells the life of Powell, but he tells the life of America during the middle years of the 20th century. Readers in their 50's and 60's will remember many of the events. Haygood shows how Powell followed Oscar DePriest to congress with a flamboyant style that Washington was not ready for. His predecessors in the 20th century congress were quiet men, willing to work within the system. They were men who wanted to get along and get re-elected. With his solid base in Harlem and political independence, Powell did not have to worry about that. Quiet just wasn't his style.
His life style was something that would not be accepted now. Since Gary Hart, womanizing Congressman are not acceptable. In the 21st century a hard drinking, thrice married minister, who made rare appearances in Congress would not be acceptable. But in the 1950's and 1960's Powell was king and could do what he wanted.
The sad part is that this independence, this bravado is what brought him down. When sued for libel, he disregarded the courts. When he finally got to be a powerful chairman, he took a carte blanche attitude with federal money and job, all of which contributed to his down fall. Race was clearly a factor, in his demise, but as Haywood says a number of times, Powell was his own worse enemy.
With all his faults, however, Powell made a signicant mark on the history of congress and the nation. His law suit, challenging the right of congress to refuse to seat him, make legal history. LBJ's Great Society and War on Poverty could hardly have passed with out Powell. He got the first black man into the US Naval Academy. He opened doors for thousands of people with jobs and increases in the minimum wage. But how soon we as a society forget.
There is an old saying about knowing when to hold and when to fold and don't count your money while you're sitting at the table. Powell never learned that. Times changed - Harlem changed - new black leaders arose - but Powell didn't change. He thought that things would always go his way. Who was this lowly preacher from Atlanta - Martin Luther King - to challenge Powell, a member of Congress? Powell did not give credit or recognition to other black leaders. When he needed them, they looked the other way.
Haywood graphically describes Powell's final years as an isolated, broke and dying man on the Island of Bimini. I was close to tears.
Haywood is a remarkable writer who wrote about a remarkable man. This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of black leadership in America and the 1950's and 1960's.
History of African-American legislators.......2004-11-14
"King of Cats" was an extremely entertaining and enlightening historical record. I have always wondered why ACP Jr. was left out of public school social, political and civic text books. After reading Wil Haygood book, I think I know why. APC Jr. did'nt subscribe to a compromising "go with the flow" black political agenda.
The writing of Haygood sounds as if he personally walked with ACP Jr. for some 50+ years. I felt as if I was there in Harlem, in Washington and Abyssian. I laughed, I cried, I felt the victories and the disappointments. Great book. A must read for religious, black history or political scholars who want to know the truth on how to "level the playing field" for oppressed people.
King of the cads.......2001-10-09
Adam Clayton Powell is the type of politician that would have difficulty existing today. He was a liberal with radical tendencies. He spent little time in his district and much time philandering. He was involved in the passage of many pieces of legislation creating what conservatives today call "big government." An irony of Powell's career is that a true progressive could rack up accomplishments at a time when unreconstructed racists and Hoover-style conservatives also thrived, while today both sides are rare breeds (at least overtly).
The striking things about Powell are the sweep of some of the policies he was involved in shaping - minimum wage, civil rights legislation, funding for education, and his massive egoism. Haygood portrays Powell as a womanizer, an abuser of special privileges, and an all-around pleasure-monger. It isn't hard to link his appetites to his professional compassion. Powell loved to be loved, and he also recognized the source of his power - the untapped resource of poor and oppressed. Lyndon Johnson, the Kennedys and more recently, Bill Clinton all recognized this. These are men cut from similar cloth.
Haygood's account suggests that the world is a better place because of Powell and men like him. Still, I didn't like the man. As admirable as his public works were, his interpersonal relationships were such that I'm glad I wasn't around to get close to him. The book starts slowly, which doesn't help the cause, either. It plods along for a while before taking off, at which time the looming presence of Powell's downfall begins to color the height of his career as tragic.
I read this book after finishing a biography of another colorful member of Congress, TIP O'NEILL AND THE DEMOCRATIC CENTURY. Powell's life was more colorful, but the O'Neill book was more enjoyable. Nevertheless, KING OF THE CATS is a worthy effort.
An excellent book on an inspirational Black leader........1999-01-14
This book is a wonderful biography of one of our most inspirational and influential African-American leaders. I found this book to be an invaluable source for understanding the courageous challenges Adam Clayton Powell undertook to establish the civil and human rights of African-Americans. I am grateful that this book was written because Adam Clayton Powell was often misrepresented and ridiculed. This book gives examples of his personality, charisma and flair without minimizing his intellect and brave dedication. I regret deeply that my book has been lost and I cannot seem to find another one.

The voice of a dying man.......2005-11-15
Adam Clayton Powell Jr's autobiography is an extremely interesting read. However, for its true historical significance, it should be read in connection with one of the two biography's that came about about Powell in the early 1990's - KING OF THE CATS by Wil Haygood and/or the Political Biography by Charles V. Hamilton.
Powell's life story is amazing. Unfortunately, his contributions to the cause of civil rights has been loss in the media coverage that he brought upon himself, particularly his explusion from Congress. There are those who are quick to say that Powell's problems were a result of racial discrimination. Sure, there was some of that, but Powell brought a great deal upon himself. His flamboyant life style, his absences from congress, his lavish spending at tax papers expense all did serious damage to his image. Probably the most damaging was his refusal to deal with a law suit brought by one of his constituants who he referred to as a "bag lady" while appearing on a TV talk show. The TV station settled with the woman for $1700 and it went away. However, Powell stonewalled the case for years until he was ultimately charged with criminal contempt of court. The case had gone through dozens of court hearings, several trials and numerous judges. There were even offers from supporters to pay the woman and get rid of the case. But Powell refused. It got so bad that he could only go to his district on sunday. Otherwise, he would have been arrested. He admits that his handling of the case was a major mistake.
In an era when JFK's romantic engagments were kept secret and before the Gary Hart affairs, Powell was able to get away with a life style that was literally filled with wine, women and song. Even his position as a Baptist minister did not limit his life style, his affairs or his three marriages. He was a creature of the time in which he lived.
ADAM BY ADAM was written near the end of Powell's life. In reading Haygood's account of his final days, you see a man trying to hold on to the past. He is alone and sick and abandoned by his former friends. As a result, Powell's accounts of his many friends and relationships rang very hollow to me. His finances were shot, he had no place to go. He was very much alone.
Powell made significant contributions to American life and should not be forgotten. However, in reviewing his life, one wonders if following the old advise - you got to know when to fold and know when to hold - may have been wise. When Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders meet with LBJ, Powell was excluded. He had become damaged goods. At the March on Washington in 1963 he was not allowed to speak. For a man with his ego, it must have been terrible.
However, politicans create their own image. Powell was a loner who never listened to anyone. He had no close advisors. In many respects his life had a sad ending. But still his contribution to African American history should not be forgotten
Adam, Our Hero!!.......2002-04-07

This book offers a sympathetic and judicious portrait of Adam Clayton Powell (1908-1972), the flamboyant reverend and unapologetically arrogant yet morally principled champion of civil rights. This biography effectively chronicles Senator Powell's rise and fall.

The Dark Side of Adam Clayton Powell.......2005-12-03
Charles V. Hamilton calls his biography of Adam Clayton Powell, Jrs. THE POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY OF AN AMERICAN DILEMMA. The American dilemma that he refers to is Gunnar Myrdal's 1944 thesis. Myrdal concluded taht American society possess a strong belief in liberty, equality, respect for law and democracy but when it comes to blacks, those same values do not always apply. So the society says one thing and does another as it relates to blacks and other minorities. Hamilton argues that this "blatant contradiction in American society between the Creed and reality was constantly highlighted by white and black advocates of civil rights." In Adam Clayton Powell, Hamilton finds the personification of this dilemma. He asserts that Powell made that dilemma the main issue of his public life. As a result, Powell's constant attempts to raisse and challege America's dilemma is the theme that Hamilton uses to portray his subject.
For students of Powell who may have read Wil Haygood's KING OF THE CATS, Hamilton's portrayal is much different. As the title implies, Hamilton primarily sticks to the political side of Powell's career while Haygood presents a much more personal account of the preacher/congressman. While I came away from the Haygood work feeling attached and sympathetic of Powell, I came away from Hamilton's work realizing that Powell had an extremely dark side and that many of his problmes were self inflicted. In addiiton, for the serious students, Hamilton's footnotes are invaluable.
One of Hamilton's major arguments is that Powell endorsed Eisenhower in 1956 in the hopes of stopping further IRS and FBI investigations of his personal finances. He also makes it clear that Powell had access to the White House during the Eisenhower administration, something that he did not have with Truman. Of course, he had created his own persona non grata status with the Turman White House when he attempted to have his wife, Hazel Scott perform at the DAR hall in Washington. It seems that Powell was attempting to do another "Marian Anderson" event and failed. One can easily conclude that Powell enjoyed the access he had with Ike's staff and figured that Sstevenson was not going to win anyway, so Powell feathered his own nest. While he wanted the poublic to believe his endorsement was for the sake of Stevenson's poor stand on Civil Rights, it is more likely that Powell enjoyed and wanted to continue his access to power.
Hamilton relates how Powell threatened to expose Bayard Rustin and Martin Luther King for an alleged homosexual relationship in order to force them to call off a demonstration at the Republican National Convention in 1960. Powell knew full well the accusations were false but the blackmail served his purpose.
In 1966 Powell scuttled an attempt by James Farmer of CORE to establish a national literacy project. Hamilton argues that in return, Powell hoped to be given White House assistance in having his New York libel judgment reduced.
As does Haygood, and Powell himself in his autobiography ADAM BY ADAM, Hamilton demonstrates how Powell made one of the worse decisions of his life in ignoring the libel suit brought against him by a New York woman that he referred to as a "bag woman." The eventual legal repercussions from the law suit (Powell refused to even show up at the trial) along with Ppowell's flagrant disregard for his congressional duties, excessive spending of congressional funds and egotistical and sometimes hedonistic life style all conributed to his demise. And when he needed the support of other civil rights leaders, who who had been victims of his wrath while he ws in power, they where not there for him as his power wained.
As the sage progresess and Powell gets closer and closer to the time that Congress refuses to seat him, the reader realizes that when Powell pointed the finger of racism at his attackers, as the old saying goes, he was pointing four fingers back at himself.
Oscar DePriest was the first black person elected to Congress in the 20th Century. But Powell was really the first black congressman that African Americans nationwide identified with. He came to congress driving a Jaguar in 1944, wearing $500 suits and looking like a movie star. He became the voice of Black America in congress, especially in the area of desegregation of the military. But his Powell Amendment had its good sides and its bad. While it raised the issue of unequal treatment, it also resulted in the defeat of legislation that would have been beneficial to Black America.
Powell's final demise was no doubt self inflictd. In the final years of his career he midjudged the reapportionment process allowing for a change in his district. Times change and voters change and eventually his base of support eroded. His religious base eroded. With his life syle it seems hard to imagine that he could be identified with the church. Harlem residents realized tht they needed a congressman, not an aging symbol of the past fishing in Bimini. As Hamilton points out, if Powell had fought before for final election defeat as much as he did after the defeat in attempts to get recounts and court battles over the election, he probably would have won.
Adam Clayton Powell died in 1972. It took almost 20 years for historians to write serious biographies of his life. Hamilton's contribution is excellent and well worth the read, not only for the life of Adam Clayton Powell, but for a history of America during the 20th century.
Exploration of a fascinating figure........2000-08-04
Hamilton has done an extraordinary job with one of America's most enigmatic political figures. Representative Powell was a man hard to figure by anybody. A rascal, decried as a corrupt politician, loved by his constituents and vilified by much of the establishment.
Powell was one of the century's (I guess that is now "last century's") first and longest serving African American members of Congress. He was on the forefront of the campaign against lynching. He brought the moral imperative of the Freedom Rides and the lunch counter sitins going on in the South to the major urban areas of the North.
His position as a vociferous champion of civil rights (more than his indiscretions) led his colleagues in the House to try to oust him. When his constituents rejected this initiative and overwhelmingly returned him to Congress, he had to go the the Supreme Court for his right to continue service (even after being stripped of his seniority.
Great history, and great reading. A thoroughly engaging subject. Even as an out-of-print book it is well worth waiting for.

What is the POINT??.......2007-01-03
I have known Ralph for a long time. I have tried in earnest to read and understand what this "book" is all about.. It is a mish-mosh of contradictions!! What is the POINT? ONLY someone who has gone to graduate school would think it has anything to say. God only knows what Ralph is trying to say or convey!! This is a terrible read. Please buy this book and then you too will know what someone who has lost his moral compass writes and thinks is profound. Please buy it!!! and Good Luck!!!
The Conversion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.......2003-01-11
Ralph Clingan's book illuminates important dimensions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's conversion, which he attributed to the six months he attended Clayton Powell's Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. This is the most important theological work of the past fifty years. I based my Reformation Day Sermon on the book. It reads like a conversation, very readable, if compressed. I want to see more detailed treatments of some of Powell's sources than allowed in this small volume.
