In 1972, the town of DeClare, Oklahoma, was consumed by the terrifying murder of Gaylene Harjo and the disappearance of her baby, Nicky Jack. When the child's pajama bottoms were found on the banks of Willow Creek, everyone feared Nicky Jack was dead, although his body was never found. Nearly thirty years later, Nicky Jack mysteriously returns to DeClare. His sudden reappearance will stun the people of DeClare and stir up long-buried emotions and memories. But what Nicky Jack discovers among the people who remember the night he vanished is far more than he, or anyone, bargains for. Piece by piece emerges a story of dashed hopes, desperate love, and a shocking act with repercussions that will cry out for justice...and redemption.
Full of the authentic heartland characters that Billie Letts writes about so beautifully, SHOOT THE MOON is a hypnotic tale filled with suspense and emotional truth. It further establishes Billie Letts as an American writer to be reckoned withâan original storyteller whose words go straight to our heart.
Customer Reviews:
Billie Letts is captivating!.......2007-09-09
Billie Letts creates a wonderful story in Shoot the Moon. She holds you captive until the very end with her twists and turns in the plot. Her characters are so intriguing. I highly recommend this book.
Review from Texas.......2007-07-16
I don't know where Billie Letts gets all these characters. This is a good book and one that keeps you turning the pages. The story line was good and I love the twists and turns that keep you guessing. I gave it 4 stars because there are so many characters that it is sometimes difficult to keep up with all of them. However the main charcters are like people you know. I would recommend this for a good read.
A departure and new direction for Billie Letts.......2007-04-23
I've read several of Ms Letts' novels and have loved each and every one of them. Her characters were a tad on the eccentric side and her writing made me care about all of them.
Her newest novel, though, is somewhat different. In the first place, though it doesn't quite fall in the genre, it could easily be termed a mystery - something I wasn't prepared for when I picked up this book. In the second place, at least one, possibly two, of the characters in "Shoot the Moon" is a definite SOB - O Boy Daniels, the local sheriff; and Arthur McFadden, his half-brother and owner of the local radio station.
The plot in and of itself is nothing to write home about. Mark Albright, a Hollywood veterinarian, discovers after his parents deaths that he was adopted and manages to trace his roots back to DeClare, Oklahoma. He travels to DeClare to find out about his biological parents and winds up in the middle of a small-town drama. Turns out his mother was killed when he was a baby, and until he showed up the town thought he was dead too.
The rest of the book concerns Mark's search for himself (as Mark Albright and as Nicky Jack Harjo, the name he was born with), for his parents, and for the killer of his mother. Along the way we meet and get to know several interesting characters, on both sides of the moral fence - the aforementioned sheriff and radio station owner; Teeve Harjo, owner of the local mom-and-pop store and her pregnant daughter Ivy; and Hap Duchamp, local lawyer and Matt Donaldson, the local fire chief - the unlikeliest couple, gay or straight, that you will ever run across.
The only fault I can find with this story is that Letts didn't give full descriptions of her characters until the story was well under way. It took me a while to realize that Mark and his biological mother were Native Americans, which turns out to be central to the plot. But once that confusion was cleared up it turns out that "Shoot the Moon" is a wonderful small-town mystery by someone who, it seems, could write another one if she wanted to.
Certainly not the best by Billie Letts.......2006-10-11
While I couldn't seem to put the book down, I believe it was mainly to see if it all turned out the way I predicted. It did. I couldn't pin down the "who done it" but thought it was someone connected to O Boy. I loved "Where the Heart Is" and truly expected more from this author. The book read like a bad Lifetime movie.
(Really 3.5 stars) Under the moon, in a week..........2006-08-22
This was a great after-work, getaway book. The story line was unique and interesting to me (Veterinarian, my father; adopted, me).
Dr. Mark Albright, Hollywood Veterinarian complete with fancy car and uptight clothing, mourns the loss of his parents and soon discovers he has a 'past' that he can not remember. He was adopted at 10 months old, never being told, and he begins his search with the only piece of information he has... His original birth cert. listing Gaylene Hjaro as his birthmother.
Dr. Albright soon discovers he is really Nicky Jack Hjaro, who was thought dead at 10 mnths old after his mothers (sort of unresolved) murder 30 years before.
We meet some interesting folks along the way, but most charachters are not fully developed. The relationship between Mark (NickyJack) and Ivy, and even Ivy's mother would have been unforgettable if Mrs. Letts had dug a little deeper.
All in all.... Good plot, quick read, entertaining mini-twists.
3.5 stars. Would recommend for it's content and simpleness (every once in a while one just needs a little quirky, nonsensical romance with a twist, that may be read in a few days!), not for it's lasting ability.

There's so much death and gloom in the thriller world these days that a book daring to offer a relatively happy ending deserves special notice. It's not that nobody dies in former Federal Bureau of Narcotics agent Joseph T. Klempner's antic, upbeat new thriller--it's just that they're almost all bad guys. Aside from the fact that he's out of work, a recent widower, and the father of a 6-year-old daughter with mysterious, recurrent headaches, New York accountant Michael Goodman leads a charmed life. The spare tire on the car he rents while on a futile job hunt in Florida just happens to hold enough high-grade heroin to jump start anyone's life. When various law enforcement agencies ignore his attempts to turn it in, Goodman decides to unload it himself. Joseph Klempner's former employer probably won't find the dueling posses of bumbling drug agents as funny as other readers, but you can't please everybody. Klempner's last thriller, the bleaker but equally inventive Felony Murder, is available in paperback.
Customer Reviews:
hack fiction.......2001-06-11
Shoot the Moon is perhaps the worst novel I have ever read. It concerns a hapless Everyman who gets in over his head when he discovers a load of pure smack in the spare of his rental car. What follows is even less original. The central premise is this: will this Everyman ("Goodman"...!), who is driven to drug-dealing to pay for his daughter's medical bills (at least it's not a sick-mother-in-need-of-surgery), successfully unload his product on the mean streets of New York? Despite the author's alleged background as a narcotics agent, there isn't a single character or line of dialogue that rings true here. But most annoying is the design of our "hero", a pathetic milquetoast who spends more time with the stray cat he shelters than with his so-called "Angel", his sickly 6-year old daughter who's been dumped with an uncaring Grandma just a few short blocks away. The transliterated "street-jive" of the token hustlers and junkies is ridiculous, not to mention bigoted and insulting. Then there's the myriad of other stock-types who pop-up, then disappear just as quickly. Worst of all, the book is filled with typos and other errors -- a testament to the disinterest which St. Martin's editors and printers have shown toward their own product.
OK for the airplane or beach.......1999-07-24
Nice airplane or beach reading, this book is that sort of "witty" crime story featuring "characters" in both the underworld and law enforcement who all stumble their way through a big drug deal, providing lots of slang and "insider" info as they do. Like Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiassen, it's good fun, could make a good movie, but nothing that's going to stick with you. Actually Klempner does a pretty good job juggling the hero and his sidekicks with the NYCPD trying to take him down, the Bronx gangsters who are trying to rip him off, the Cuban gangsters trying to get even, and the mafia he's trying to deal with... In its zest to make everything work out and have all the lose ends tied up, the plot relies a little too much on police bumbling, and a crucial ally who betrays her past, but other than that it's fine.
Clever story premise. Interesting main character. Good read........1999-06-09
This book was fun. Great story that grabs you early on. Sympathetic main character that is an "everyman" one can easily identify with. Well-written. Author seems to have a knowledge of police procedures without needlessly "showing-off" that knowledge - information is only described as necessary for the story. Police are probably depicted as dumber than they are, but hey, what do I know? Maybe this *is* close to mark -- if so, we should be worried. Nice depiction of a father-daughter relationship that you dont always see in novels of this kind.
From Booklist , August 19, 1997.......1998-10-06
Following on the heels of his well-received first novel, Felony Murder (1995), Klempner has scored another success. Michael Goodman is an out-of-work accountant, trying to single-handedly support a seriously ill daughter after the death of his wife. On a journey from New York to Fort Lauderdale for a disastrous job interview, he discovers millions of dollars worth of drugs in the trunk of his rental car. Being a basically honest guy, he tries to turn them over to the police, but they keep rebuffing him. With mounting medical bills in mind, he succumbs to temptation and takes the drugs home. He is not any better selling the drugs than he was in his interview, and he rapidly falls under the scrutiny of multiple law-enforcement and criminal organizations. All of them see him as their chance for a big score. Klempner's style is both engaging and humorous, and he maintains a skillful level of suspense throughout the story. Big fun. Kirkus Reviews.......1998-10-06
From Kirkus Reviews , June 15, 1997 Think it would be fun to be sitting on top of something worth a cool $5 million? Not when the something is primo heroin....Readers who root for the good guys will enjoy the special challenge posed by Goodman, too nice to do time for dealing (so he can't be caught) but too principled to make a killing from selling heroin (so he can't get away).-- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
In this 9th volume of the Justice League of America Archives, the league was slowly starting to change with the sixties, with the Black Canary as a focus.
Denny O'Neil, single-handedly, nearly destroys the JLA.......2006-06-30
Denny O'Neil wrote the clunkiest dialogue ever. His po-faced attempts at giving the Justice League inner conflict all ring hollow and forced. His attempts at "relevance," something a comic book inherently is NOT, fall completely flat. The only thing that saves this archive edition is the charm of Dick Dillin's art, which even Denny O'Neil couldn't ruin.
Its Dillin Time as we go from 12 to 15 Cents.......2005-01-17
Its the Dick (one of the most under appreciated silver age artists) Dillin's time at bat.
Dick made his debut in the previous volume but now he must carry the whole show. For my money few people could carry on the adventures of earth greatest heroes better than Mr. Dillin. He can do the quiet scenes, he can do the action scenes and he can keep all the costumes straight. For my money he draws one of the most beautiful renditions of Black Canary, bar none.
This is a period of change for the Justice League of America. The innocence of the 1960's was giving way to the activism of the late 60's and early 70's. The writers of DC were trying to grapple with becoming socially relevant and were feeling Marvel Comics nipping at their heels.
Issues such as pollution and tolerance are starting to be shown. Wonder Woman had been de-powered and turned into a Mrs. Peal (of the Avengers) clone (ironically by former JLA artist Sekowsky). Who would will the estrogen gap? None other than the Black Canary making her way from earth 2 to earth 1 after suffering a major tragedy.
Times were changing even further. The League shed its human mascot Carl Snapper as he was tricked into betraying them in issue #77 by the world's most average man.
The biggest zinger to me oddly enough was this is the time that the price rose from 12 to 15 cents signaling the beginning of the end for the silver age of comics.
While none of these stories are up there with the "big" epics of the past it still is an enjoyable stroll in which you will discover many under appreciated stories
Read and enjoy.

I'll be brief. Ing must be convinced that this book deserves to be updated and put back in print. He deals with short and long-term survival, what to expect and plan for, and even gives helpful tips that can be put to use on anything from a camping trip to a worst-case scenario.

Yummy addition to your cookbook catalog.......2003-07-06
Having seen a profile of the restaurant and its owner on national t.v. some time ago, I was eager to visit this place and taste what everyone was raving about. Now that we've taken that maiden trip, are we glad we did! The recipes in the book include every kind of yummy breakfast treat you can imagine. (The coconut and chocolate chip Peter Paul Pancakes are my fave!) If you have the time and patience to fuss over breakfast and don't just want to grab an apple and cup of coffee as you race out the door, this is a great way to enjoy Breakfast as a main meal of the day, and treat your family to something special too. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. The author (who is also the restaurant owner)has a friendly and easy to read style and it makes the cookbook more than just a step by step instructional. If you are ever in New York City, stop by this place on the Upper East Side and see for yourself why Carrie Levin has earned such a great reputation in her business.

Wonderful Book! Can't Do Without it!.......2007-06-17
This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the Bernese Mountain Dog or BMD. I love everything about this book. It's hardcover, the pages are smooth and shiny, and there are TONS of color photos. Not to mention, the information that this author churns out in this book is indispensable. Possibly the best book on Berners that are out there right now.
Must have for Berner owners.......2007-05-30
If you enjoy the BMD breed, this book is a must have. The photos capture the beauty and personality of the Berner much beter than other books that I have seen about the breed.
Enchanting, thoroughly absorbing book on the "King of Dogs".......2006-05-16
This book sets the standard of "compleatness" on the Bernese Mountain Dog. It is way beyond that of just a typical guidebook. Bernd Guenther has left, proverbially, no stone unturned here. The author's breadth of research, resources, insights, and details are on a level of the highest competence as to be priceless; this kind of preliminary (for the new and even seasoned owner) information cannot be overestimated.
But it's more than just an information book for breeders and owners; you are made to completely inhabit the world of this legendary, mythological breed. Guenther takes you on a delightful life-guide of several Berners, noting distinct personality traits, whimsical anecdotes, and a good deal of sharp-viewed observations. Without ever being heavy-handed, Guenther takes the reader onto a serious study of the breed. As he makes clear, this is an extraordinary dog, one that needs like considerations. No prospective Berner owner should be without this book, as the author has the kind of sagacity and knowledge that was gleaned as a true lover and connoisseur of not just his own dogs, but for the breed in general. Indeed, some of the information is not to be taken lightly, especially genetic problems, and some tough sacrifices one must potentially make. And - this is a good thing - the book will either make you say a firm "yes" or "no" when considering bringing a Berner into your life. On the one hand, this beautiful, loyal, human-like dog may have you on the phone tomorrow looking for one; on the other, the responsibilities can be made to seem overwhelming - be prepared to GIVE UP your life BB (Before Berner) as you have known it! You cannot get any dog as if you would a piece of furniture, but with Berners, there are absolutely no options: the dog has to be a total part of your family, your life. Guenther makes clear as to what adoption of a Berner entails. Freedom will be limited. Berners are not for jet travelers or workaholics. After reading Guenther's precise requirements, a prospective owner will be made to realize the exacting responsibilities involved. Berners are frighteningly intuitive creatures, and to compromise the existence of them would be sheer misery for them.
Crowning this achievement are the astonishing photos; they will literally make you gasp. Some will bring tears to your eyes. You will see why this breed is the King of Dogs: their physical magnificence is almost unreal. Perhaps the most fascinating set are of one dog, captured from the time of near birth, from every few months, and then to yearly intervals, to near the end of its life.
This is more than just a book: it is an incredible generosity of spirit. Don't even THINK of bringing a Bernese Mountain Dog into your home without it.
So much more than just a simple coffeetable book.......2004-06-06
The Bernese Mountain Dog: A Dog Of Destiny by Bernd Guenter (a member of the Dog Writers Association of America and the World Dog Press Association) is so much more than just a simple coffeetable book of wonderful photographs showcasing a specialized canine breed. The superbly presented and "user friendly" text commences with an introduction and history of the breed, then addresses the "Bernese Mountain Dog Standard". Then their are entire chapters devoted to puppyhood, the adolescent Berner, the adult Berner, showing the Berne (European Style), breeding the Berner, and health issues (including veterinarian selection, vaccinations, deworming, experternal parasites, and specific health problems affecting the breed). Enhanced with appendices for Breed Standards; Useful Addresses; Bibliography; and List of Abbreviations, The Bernese Mountain Dog is comprehensive, exceptionally well written, superbly illustrated throughout, and a "must" addition for the reading list and reference shelf for anyone who's canine companion is the Bernese mountain dog.
A MUST book for Bernese Mountain Dog Lovers.......2004-05-18
Every photograph in Bernd's book is literally a work of art. The detail in the photographs and the background scenery just takes your breath away. I especially love the photographs in "The Berner Circle of Life" on pages 134 through 141. Bernd chronicles the life of a newborn berner through his senior years. He has posed the Berner in the same stance from ages 5 weeks through 9 years. It is fascinating to see the progression from a young puppy, to a gangly teenager, to a full grown adult male who is absolutely gorgeous!!
It is not just the photographs that make this book a "must have" for every Berner person and for those who are seeking information about Berners; the text is also excellent. Bernd Guenter is from Germany and his command of the English language is absolutely amazing!! This fantastic book is full of great
information about the breed - you can tell that Bernd has lived with Berners and has been around Berners and their people for many years and from many countries. He is able to take his knowledge of Berners and turn it into a most informative and delightful book that is easy to read.
You will find yourself shaking your head in agreement, laughing at the antics of the Berners, gaining a lot of knowledge about Berners and staying up late at night to finish just one more chapter. It a book that you will treasure forever.
THANK YOU, BERND, for writing and photographing such a lovely coffee table book about our Berners!!!!!!

Book Description
The Screaming Body gives a full and authoritative account of Artaud's film projects and his conception of surrealist cinema. It examines his unique series of drawings of the fragmented human body, begun in the ward of a lunatic asylum and finished in a state of furious liberation. The book captures Artaud's ultimate experiment with the screaming body in the form of his censored recording To Have Done with the Judgement of God-an experiment which is unprecedented in the history of art.

Disappointing.......2004-08-22
This book is simply a journal article padded to book length.Moreover, there is really nothing new or interesting that cannot be learned from a rigorous reading of Artaud's published work. Barber should have published this in ArtForum and we readers could have saved our money. A profound disappointment.
Fascinating obsession this Artaud.......2001-11-19
There are many who consider Antonin Artaud a madman, yet there's no question that he revolutionized contemporary theater. Artaud was such a powerful, anarchic force that critics and fans alike are still trying to find the right place for him in cultural history.
Stephen Barber has just written his second book on this visionary: Artaud: The Screaming Body. It's not a major work on the artist, but it is one of the many (and much-needed) pieces of the Artaud puzzle. At present there is not an essential English-language book on Artaud. There are anthologies here and there, but not one big critical book on this fascinating figure. Perhaps it's an impossible task; Artaud influenced not only the theater, but also poetry, drawing, radio performances, and the cinema. He's worthy of many volumes.
Artaud started out as an actor and was involved in two key films in cinema history: Carl Dreyer's 1927 film classic, The Passion of Joan of Arc, and Abel Gance's 1927 masterpiece, Napoléon. Due to his stunning looks, he was on his way to becoming a major movie star, but Artaud decided to veer in another direction. He believed that performance was not a job, but rather a way of life. He felt the world was damned, and that there needed to be a new language to convey to the world that it had lost its ability to speak. Artaud was frustrated by the uselessness of contemporary gestures and language to express what he was thinking and feeling. In response, he single-handedly invented a new theater, which later became the foundation for the Theater of the Absurd and for the works of the Living Theater, as well as the springboard for Jean Genet, Eugène Ionesco, and Samuel Beckett. Artaud created a new form that ran screaming from a dependence on language and logical thought.
While his presence was hugely felt in the theater, Artaud believed it was the cinema that would prove to be the perfect medium for his theories. Between 1924 and 1935 Artaud wrote 15 film scenarios. Only one became a film: La Coquille et le Clergyman ("The Seashell and The Clergyman") (1927). The brilliant Germaine Dulac directed the film and, as legend has it, there was a major battle between her and Artaud. Dulac added her own thoughts to the screenplay; Artaud was especially annoyed when she suggested that the events of the film were all part of a dream, since he had wanted to blur the line between reality and dream. Something that's a dream is, after all, merely a dream.
Artaud: The Screaming Body is a good introduction to the world beyond Artaud's theater essays and theories. Barber focuses mostly on Artaud's work in the cinema, his influence on drawing, and his radio performances, which took place just before Artaud's death in 1948. What we need now is the ultimate, sweeping biography of Antonin Artaud. This small, well-written book offers only a peek at the man and his magnificent, disturbed visions.
Book Description
Bayard Rustin (1912–1987), the famed openly gay African American organizer, taught Martin Luther King Jr. strategies of nonviolence during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, thereby launching the birth of the civil rights movement in 1955. Widely acclaimed as a founding father of modern black protest, in 1963 Rustin reached his pinnacle of notoriety as organizer of the March on Washington. His open homosexuality, however, remained a point of contention among black church leaders, with controversy sometimes embroiling even King himself. Time on Two Crosses showcases the extraordinary career of this black gay civil rights pioneer. Spanning five decades, the book combines classic texts ranging in topic from Gandhi’s impact on African Americans, white supremacists in Congress, the antiwar movement, and the assassination of Malcolm X. Historical black-and-white photographs are included in this insider's account of the civil rights movement.

Important History.......2006-02-25
The editors, Devon Carbado and Donald Weise, have done the important work of bringing to us the writings of the central, but neglected, civil rights- and human rights- activist, Bayard Rustin. Their well-written Introduction does a superb job of properly placing Rustin within his times and sharing the story of this complex and important historical figure. The Rustin writings relating to his life as a gay man in America in the middle part of the 20th century are often as insightful as Rustin's writings on the movement. An important work.
The gay brotha speaks!.......2003-08-12
The person who organized the 1963 March on Washington for Civil Rights was a black gay man! Two eminent scholars, Carbado and Weise, who have done much to open space for black gay studies continue that tradition by compiling some of Bayard Rustin's most famous speeches. The book starts with a well-done biography of the leader. The next sections are speeches on a range of issues which show how thoroughly ahead of his time this brotha was.
Near the end of their biography section, the editors admit that much work has come out recently to highlight Rustin (two biographies, a documentary, etc.) Their contribution is that readers finally get to see what Rustin was thinking verbatim. Due to homophobia and Far Right domination, Rustin was often silenced and marginalized. However, he was a feisty figure who also wasn't afraid to butt heads with top dogs. Similarly, his ideas will both impress and disgust readers. This was one opinionated brotha! Still, I love the way this collection disproves many myths: that gay black men don't care about civil rights, that only heterosexuals made black civil rights happen, that James Baldwin was the only black gay man who can be recognized in the struggle, etc. Moreover, Rustin was on the forefront of issue far beyond just his race and sexuality. He spoke of feminism, international affairs, pacifism, labor rights, etc. In a way, it's almost limiting that the editors bring up only "two crosses" in the title of this book. Just like Frida Kahlo, Bayard Rustin juggled many balls and now modern readers get a chance to witness how excellently he did it. I think all progressives, regardless of their race or sexual orientation, will be blown away by this black, gay hero.

No Easy Topic - deftly handled! Highly Recommended.......2005-02-11
I admire the gumption of Morgan Reynolds Publishing. Each year, as other publishers gin out yet another book about some popular hero, Morgan Reynolds tackles the unsung heroes with grace and clarity. This new book about Bayard Rustin is a perfect example.
"Bayard who?" you're probably asking. Ah...my point exactly. Rustin - grandson of a former slave - was a talented musician, writer, and committed activist, organizer and advisor who worked closely with such luminaries as Martin Luther King Jr. and A. Philip Randolph. He is responsible for introducing Gandhi's principles of nonviolent protest to many in the Civil Rights Movement, and was a backbone of the historic 1963 March on Washington. At the President's request, he counseled Lyndon Johnson on how best to handle the aftermath of King's assassination in 1968. In the 1980's, he counseled Lech Walesa on the use of nonviolent resistance.
The reason you've probably never heard of him is because he was also gay. After being prosecuted for a homosexual encounter, he was deserted by many of the movement leaders. But he continued to work tirelessly and bravely behind the scenes, choosing obscurity for the sake of the movement.
Obviously, this is a complex topic for the young adult audience, but Miller respects their intelligence and handles his material deftly, without skirting the issues. The book includes a timeline, citations of sources, a bibliography, and related web sites. It is also lavishly illustrated, with archival photos and artwork on about every fourth page.
Highly recommended!

What a great find!.......2006-03-17
I stumbled across this book at a thrift sale. Having first heard of Bayard Rustin about three years ago by way of a documentary film, I quickly snatched up the book at the bargain price of twenty-five cents! What started as a casual perusal of the text at the sale turned into a focused absorption of the life of one of the least acknowledged civil and human rights activist in the country's history. I'm still amazed that throughout high school and college history classes, some of which designed to highlight the African American experience, I don't recall ever encountering acknowledgement of his work in the movement. Well this book is an excellent start to making Rustin's story accessible to a mass reading public. The book is written for readers of the middle school age but it's not dummied down in content. The large font makes for fast reading at the adult level and its easy on the eyes for seniors.
The book is organized in ten chapters and chronologically moves through Rustin's life and his involvement in various movements and organizations aimed at equality and freedom for the human race. Chapter titles are:
* Growing Up Quaker
* College and Communism
* Conscientious Objector
* Greater Militancy
* The Civil Rights Movement Begins
* The Southern Christian Leadership Conference
* To March or Not to March
* March Organizer
* The March on Washington
* International Organizer
Although an older publication, I think this is a powerful addition to the classroom. A little leg work may be able to turn up copies at a great discount. I certainly plan on telling all of the educators that I know about the book. Highly Recommended!
*ARCHITECT OF AN UNFORGETTABLE MARCH TOWARD CHANGE*.......2006-02-03
Here is a fine biography for "Ages 10 and up" - - the "UP" being any age. "Behind the Scenes of the Civil Rights Movement" is about Bayard Rustin, a behind-the-scenes guy who not only lived in exciting times, he was a pivotal figure in the U.S. civil rights movement for decades. He was known as a "genius for organization" & the MARCH ON WASHINGTON happened in large part because of his skills. The 1963 March was the largest gathering of people 'of like mind' who had ever demonstrated peacefully, AND successfully.
Bayard Rustin was a controversial young man, raised by Quaker grandparents who influenced his strong beliefs in nonviolence. Well-known author Jim Haskins describes Rustin's college days when he discovered he was a homosexual, and became interested in communism. Not much later a meeting with A. Philip Randolph (the famous organizer of black railroad porters) began a life-long influence on Rustin's thinking and direction. Bayard Rustin was a conscientious objector to war and chose to be imprisoned for those beliefs. After World War II he became involved and very influential regarding issues of protest marches and reconciliation.
He died at age 75, still actively working for justice and human rights. At his funeral one of his recorded spirituals was played, "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen". Bayard Rustin had a tenor voice which might have taken him successfully to a career as a musician but his compassion for people called him to a different road in life. Reviewer mcHaiku recommends this portrayal of an important worker toward change in American life; it is of particular value for young people to hear different views about 'service for the greater good' and about patriotism, and to weigh their own instincts against the pressures exerted by peers and the media.

Bayard Rustin: Non-Violent Activist.......2007-09-14
Daniel Levine's biography Bayard Rustin and the Civil Rights Movement portrays the life of the complex and unique Bayard Rustin. Born in Pennsylvania in 1912, Bayard grew up in an environment that would prepare him for a life campaigning for pacifism, civil rights, and human rights, interacting with people of various backgrounds in personal, professional, and political arenas.
Rustin was raised by his grandmother, an early member of the NAACP, who instilled Quaker pacifism in Bayard and also exposed him to prominent black figures. Rustin attended an integrated high school where he excelled, and began to resist racial discrimination and to inspire other students, black and white, to do so as well. He also formed friendships with Jewish classmates and empathized with them. Rustin developed as a brilliant, confident, compassionate man with the ability and charisma to accomplish great things as a pacifist and civil rights supporter.
Rustin is best known as the organizer behind the 1963 March on Washington at which Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech, but he began his pursuit of social justice long before that, and the causes he advocated also included peace, gay rights (Rustin was homosexual), and combating poverty. In World War II, Rustin became involved in the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), an anti-war group. As a FOR member, he befriended Jay Holmes Smith, a supporter of Gandhi in India, and from him developed a deep understanding of non-violent direct action (NVDA). As a conscientious objector, he was imprisoned for refusing to comply with the draft in any way. In prison, he began working to desegregate black and white prisoners, applying the principles of NVDA for the first time in the US to challenge racial discrimination.
With the end of the war, Rustin's attention began its shift from the pacifist movement to the civil rights movement. Notably, he helped organize the Journey for Reconciliation in 1947, which would serve as the model for the Freedom Rides in 1961. In the 1950's, Rustin became acquainted with Martin Luther King, Jr., whom he exposed to NVDA. Rustin inspired King to utilize NVDA as the most effective tool in the Civil Rights Movement. When King became the major figure of the movement, Rustin advised him. As the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum, Rustin and A. Phillip Randolph organized the March on Washington, the most momentous event of the movement.
Rustin sought not only to stage protests, but to effect change. This led him to his close involvement with the Democrats in the 1960's, as the Johnson administration achieved passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. Rustin would not renounce Johnson and therefore would not demand an immediate end to the Vietnam War, in a break from his pacifist past. Throughout his life, Rustin maintained close ties to the Jewish community and supported Israel's right to exist, eventually calling for US arms support for Israel. In his later years, Rustin worked for an end to American poverty and for human rights world wide, but he was no longer a pacifist. Still, until his death in 1987, Rustin remained committed to a vision of greater social justice.
In Bayard Rustin and the Civil Rights Movement, Levine portrays many contradictions of Rustin's eccentric personality. Yet, he does not reconcile these contradictions and does not sufficiently elaborate on how these eccentricities may have been detrimental to Rustin, other than to say that his homosexuality damaged his image and led him to resign from organizations more than once. He portrays a man who foolishly believes he is "omnicompetent" but then contradictorily says Rustin was "lacking self-importance." Also, Levine does not challenge Rustin's almost unequivocal support for Israel. Rustin's friends were mostly Jewish, which must have influenced his decision to call for arms support for Israel, rather than to campaign for the Palestinian refugees. Addressing such contradictions would have provided a fuller depiction of Bayard Rustin.
Overall, Levine's biography is an excellent introduction to Bayard Rustin, conveying many aspects of both his public and private life. Levine explains how and why Rustin was an effective leader as a man with clear objectives and logical actions. Bayard Rustin and the Civil Rights Movement highlights the life works of Rustin, and in doing so justifies Rustin as an important figure on his own, and not merely in relation to Martin Luther King, Jr., as he is often portrayed. While Levine is certainly a champion of Rustin's, he does not glorify him so much as to be unaware of Rustin's shortcomings, addressing Rustin's personal failures and the ineffectuality of some of his projects. In the end, these shortcomings are greatly overshadowed by Rustin's successes.
After reading Levine's biography, I have developed a great appreciation for Bayard Rustin as an ethical, rational, brilliant, and charismatic man. I hope to develop a greater knowledge of Rustin, to learn more about his organizations and to hear recordings of his speeches. Daniel Levine's work was an excellent book for an introduction to such a dynamic, fascinating, and important man.
