Book Description
The year is 1954. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, have come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this remote and barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane bears relentlessly down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades -- with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. But then neither is Teddy Daniels.
Customer Reviews:
Shutter Island will make you shudder!.......2007-09-19
I just finished reading this book for my book club selection and I have to say, I couldn't put it down. It both intrigued and amazed me. Mr. Lehane has done a powerful job of showing us how two US Marshalls go to Shutter Island off the coast of Boston to look for an alleged escaped patient from this asylum for the crimminally insane. Teddy, one of the marshalls is running from horror in his own life, only to find the doctors here are performing experimental and horrendous surgery on the "patients." But, what will grip the readers is the unexpected and quite shocking ending to this book. It definitely is a keeper.
Love Lehane; hate this book.......2007-08-18
Lehane's detective novels are the very best in the genre among current writers. But this book is too gimmicky. You will be disappointed by the ending if you don't see it coming. You will be disappointed by the ending if you do see it coming.
But if you must read this book, read it BEFORE you read his excellent detective novels. I read those first, and this book has left a bad taste in my mouth for several years. That taste can only be washed out by another Gennaro / Kenzie novel. Well, Lehane, I'm waiting.
Phychological Thriller.......2007-08-13
If "Shutter Island" hadn't been a book club selection I wouldn't have finished the book and missed the climax to a plodding beginning. John D. MacDonald did a hurricane in "Condominium" with greater impact on the psychic. Mr. Lehane's vivid prose trudges along at precise pace which gives the reader no relief, no break in the anticlimactic action until you wonder if his fingers stumbled over the keyboard.
The opening with Dr. Sheehan's efforts to record an event 39 years in the past sets the tone of unimportance, cowardliness and evil intent on the part of the authorities to maintain a private "experimental" facility with funding from federal sources. The treatment of the "criminally insane" is a dark period in the annals of psychiatry, but the reader knows from the moment Teddy surrenders his gun he will never leave the island alive. Hence there is no mystery or suspense, just a cataloging of episodes to reach the last page.
Nash Black, author of "Sins of the Fathers" and "Qualifying Laps."
Tremendous Disappointment.......2007-08-01
I bought this book because I saw it on a list of great thrillers. That was a lie. This book was not at all involving. It was full of unbelievable situations and there was not real development. I always keep books but this one I abandoned. No more Dennis Lehane for me.
One Flew Over the DaVinci Code.......2007-07-28
Ok, first I think that Dennis Lehane is the best writer of crime fiction ever. Books like Darkness Take My Hand and Gone, Baby, Gone are standards by which all others should be judged. What I previously admired about Lehane is his unflinching look at base brutality. Mystic River marked the change for him...and not a good one. His Gennaro/Kenzie series, remember, was written in first person...and he works with that better than anyone. The third person simply doesn't work for Lehane; his writing has become stilted, generic and predictable. This is an awful book. It was a struggle to complete it, really. I do not have the energy to list the 10 books it is similar to and worse than, but suffice to say that if anyone knows this theme, it has been done to death (throw in a few "codes" and it becomes deplorable). Now, I understand why he is trying to break away from the series cliche of the Gennaro/Kenzie books, but he so remarkably kept those books fresh, while using the same characters, it was beauty to behold. Maybe just returning to first-person narrative will restore the edginess for which he known.

Book Description
Summer, 1954.
U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels has come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Along with his partner, Chuck Aule, he sets out to find an escaped patient, a murderess named Rachel Solando, as a hurricane bears down upon them.
But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe's radical approach to psychiatry; an approach that may include drug experimentation, hideous surgical trials, and lethal countermoves in the shadow war against Soviet brainwashing...Or is there another, more personal reason why he has come there?
As the investigation deepens, the questions only mount. The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island.
Because someone is trying to drive them insane ...
Customer Reviews:
Ignore the jacket blurb -- it's actually good.......2004-06-26
I can't believe I picked up this book. The jacket notes make it look like just another inmates-taking-over-the-asylum story, or some kind of Stephen King knockoff. Good gracious! Someone's trying to drive our hero insane in the insane asylum! Give me a break. I picked up the abridged CD at the library anyway, because I've listened to just about all their others. That's a problem with living in a small town and traveling a lot.
But it was good. I really enjoyed it. The story was enjoyable, good adventure, smooth story. Protagonist isn't just a dumb action figure, and is actually a pretty complex and likeable guy. The fellow reading on the CD has the right voice, gives good life to the characters. Even the abridged story was pretty seamless, something that doesn't happen enough. When the slips and twists start coming, you notice them as slips and twists instead of as annoying gaps in the story. That's not easy to do in a shortened novel.
Can't say too much about the story itself without either sounding like the nerd who wrote the marketing copy or ruining the story. Recommend listening hard to the seeming throwaway short narrative at the very beginning. After that, just go along for the ride.
Just read the thing. It's a fun one. -- RG

Fantastic........2007-08-27
This is the best book I've ever read. I finished it in a day because I couldn't put it down. I own the hardcover and when I finished it I bought all of Dennis Lehane's other books and was equally impressed. This guy has talent.
Shocking.......2007-06-14
I have never been as surprised (not even close) at an ending as I was with this book. Fast, witty, and smooth. I have read all of Lehanes books and this was by far the most surprising.
Book Worm.......2007-05-30
I absolutely loved this novel. It was unlike anything I have ever read before. It had twists galore. I thought I knew what direction the story was going in and whammo I was wrong again. The ending was such a huge surprise. The prose were excellent. There was some humor amid a really serious subject, the criminally insane imprisoned on Shutter Island.. A REALLY good read. Finished it in two days.

Customer Reviews:
Three dimensional and realistic story about facing and conquering fears.......2005-09-24
BRIGHT LIGHTS FOR BELLA, the third volume in the Star Sisterz series, features Bella DeLuca, a 14-year-old high school freshman trying to figure out who she is. Not a brain like her younger sister and not an athlete like her older brother, Bella hates feeling in the middle and uninteresting. When a poster announces auditions for the upcoming production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Bella decides to take a chance and try out. Best case scenario: she'll get to act with her older brother's friend Seth and convince him that she's not a little girl anymore.
But Bella is not prepared for all the things that could go wrong, such as her best friend Rani getting mad at her because trying out for the play means she can't do brain bowl like they planned, or the fact that her role of Titania includes flying across the stage in a harness. Bella is so afraid of heights that she hasn't done her laundry for a week because she doesn't want to climb a step-ladder and get the detergent down from the top shelf. How is she ever going to get into a harness and fly high above the audience in the play?
When Bella receives a mysterious message advising her to tell a friend her secret fear, it takes her a while but she finally figures it out. But can she reach out to Rani, who's still mad at her, and ask for help conquering her fear of heights? Or is Bella doomed to be a friendless member of the audience?
Once again, the Star Sisterz sets just the right tone for a series book. The characters, particularly Bella and Rani, are believable and the conflicts are difficulties that every young teen faces. Bella takes realistic steps to solve her problem, and it's likely that the decisions she makes could inspire readers to face and conquer their own fears.
Bella lives in a three-dimensional world that includes siblings, parents, teachers and friends. Her father in particular is a vivid and intriguing character, and Bella's relationship with him is heartwarming. One of the things I like best about the Star Sisterz series is its recognition that everyone has problems, and that even minor problems can loom large and insurmountable if you don't know how to solve them. In BRIGHT LIGHTS FOR BELLA, author Lana Perez takes care to show that problems can be broken down into smaller pieces and solved one step at a time. This is an important lesson for preteens and teens to learn --- and something many adults could use a refresher course on.

This science fiction novel predicts what will happen when America's astronauts discover an advanced civilization on a distant planet. What does our government do about it? (Your tax dollars at work!)
Customer Reviews:
A well written story!!.......2003-01-22
I feel this book described the errors of mankind and just being human. What would humans of earth do if they happen to find other humans on another planet. This book displays a scenario of what might actually happen. Robert B Boardman is a good writer. He pulled off a good story of economics, politics and especially greed, in which, I feel is happening in our society today. I think he hit the nail right on the head with what our current government is acutually doing. I would of gave this book a five but it lack a little bit of "Umpff", other than that this book is entertaining
Great Read for Freedom Minded.......2000-03-06
This is a very entertaining book. The underlying theme is similar to James Hogan's Voyage to Yesteryear (another very good book) or Eric Frank Russell' And Then there Were None.
It is a case of a world that has evolved without the force and fraud that necessarily accompanies the imposition of the state on society. The the do gooders arrive and decide that they must "help" these poor deluded free happy souls with the trappings of the state: subsidized transportation, voting, taxes, police thugs, and so on.
If you are frustrated with the shriveling of freedom in the face of our own do gooder fascists here on earth, you'll enjoy this read.

The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook: Homemade Goodies for Man's Best Friend .......2007-09-28
There are lots of easy, healthy, fun to make dog treats with things you already have in your cabinets. It was worth buying and I am very happy to have it on my bookshelf.
A little ruff!!!!.......2007-07-18
this book has a good selection of recipes but they are complicated and use ingredients like dried milk powder etc... the handy hints are good but some of the ingredients put me off making them.
Good book...Not exactly what I was looking for.......2007-07-13
This book uses a lot of "pre-made" ingredients (dog kibble, cereal, pancake mix) in the recipes, if that is what you are looking for than this is the book for you.
Drooling Doggie.......2007-05-15
My dog has just loved what I've made so far. The only fault with the book is having to do conversions (being from Oz)and finding the equivilent of the prepared bicuit bases, but I have and now we are on our way.
Some of Harley's mates also liked what I made! And yes he did sit next to me and drool!

New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling.......2007-07-22
WOW!!! what a book up to date info and so exact .
excellent techniches and stape by stape on how to.
you feel like you are in the show ring and when you put the book down you want to put the show lead on your dog to practice...very helpfull and inspirering.
Have the basics but ready for the next steps?.......2007-07-20
Starting my second show dog's career, after blundering my way through with my first one, Peter Green and Mario Migliorini gave me excellent tips and strategies to make the handler pay more attention to his/her job. I love the section on stacking - wonderful photos to show the sublties that beginners don't see. An excellent book for someone with the basic knowledge already down who wants to take their showing to the next level.
Not what I was Looking for.......2007-06-06
This book would be helpful for anyone beginning showing dogs. They really needn't know anything. If you already know what a show is, how to enter and have been in the ring before, you're probably not going to get much out of this. I have a few books on showing that far outwiegh this one. It's basic, simple and for complete novices only...It is written well, and is easy to understand. If this is to be your first book on dog showing, then it will provide you with enough info to get you started. I preferred, The Winning Edge: Show Ring Secrets (Howell Reference Books) and Tricks of the Trade: From Best Intentions to Best in Show, Revised Edition
Very well done!.......2007-02-21
Great book for the learning dog handler. Combine it with a book like "Eye For a Dog" and you are on your way to understanding America's second longest running sport (next to horse racing).
New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling by Peter Green.......2006-12-08
Wonderful read with plenty of good tips that I'm sure would benefit anyone wanting to improve their dog handling.

Product Description
Turning walls of a city into a giant sized painting is an idea that has been kicking around in history for a long, long time. This book documents mural art in both rural and urban Minnesota. These mural have been created by professional artists as well as sign painters and neighborhood amateurs who paint a wall as a group activity. After a recap of the history of mural painting Moira Harris maps out where each of the murals are with the photographic display. Brief biographies are included for the muralists that were known. The United State Information Agency selected Museum of the Streets to be a part of the "Visual Arts USA Exhibit" (1987), representing the best in American Publishing, and was exhibited in 50 countries throughout the world.
