Lots of the reviews here give this one 3 or 4 stars. Perhaps it was the format, perhaps it was the end of the school year rush for me and the welcome respite this book provided. Perhaps I just liked it better. Nevertheless, it was a good thriller, despite the fact that problems with Elvis and Joe's case are telegraphed from miles away.
My audio version was read by a narrator who has done multiple tours as a reader for Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels. So, the listener is naturally drawn to make comparisons between Elvis Cole/Joe Pike/Lucy and Spenser/Hawk/Susan. Readers familiar with them both can see the analogies already. "Sunset Express" is probably the most Spenser-like of the Cole novels I've read or listened to so far. Lots of relationship discussion (for Cole anyway, a little less than average for Spenser).
I give this one a grade of A-
Decent.......2007-05-01
I'm a big Robert Crais fan but I think he can do better than this one. While it was an exciting read, it was not very original because it draws too many comparisons to the OJ Simpson case. For example, you have a very wealthy man with lots of connections who hires a dream team of a defense counsel to represent him after getting charged with murdering his wife.
Again, there were some good dialog and action scenes but the storyline was not very original.
Easy Entertaining Read.......2007-03-05
Elvis Cole is hired by a famous Hollywood lawyer to investigate a police officer who found evidence that led to the arrest of the lawyer's client. The client is a wealthy restaurant owner. As it turns out Elvis is being used by the lawyer. There's lots of things going on and Elvis eventually discovers the truth. His girlfiend Lucy comes for a vist and Joe Pike gets on board the investigation. This is not one of the better Robert Crais's novels but it easy to read and entertaining. ( B).
Mediocre.......2006-10-30
This book is fast reading although it took about 150 pages to get going. The author balances the intertwined stories very well yet appears to do little to make the characters that he has created seem real. They are cardbord cutouts with little substance to them. Although not great, it certainly does qualify as a fast and easy read even though much of the story is quite predictable.
Is evidence really evidence? (3.75 *s).......2006-05-28
Being a Crais first-timer, one is immediately struck by the similarities to Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series: set in LA, the main character, Elvis Cole, lives in a house on a hill on stilts where coyotes and hawks are observed and heard, the geography of LA is amply described, and romantic pursuits seem to be difficult for one reason or the other. Both Harry Bosch and Elvis Cole are good guys that are not fully appreciated, though Bosch operates within the LAPD and Cole is a PI.
SUNSET EXPRESS is essentially a story of what money can buy a defendant: an expensive team of lawyers that is quite capable of manipulating public opinion, if not actually creating evidence, to favor the client. Cole is hired by high-priced lawyer Jonathan Green to track down leads/tips that could lead to the exoneration of well-to-do entrepreneur Teddy Martin accused of murdering his wife. Cole becomes a bit of celebrity as his findings make the local news in orchestrated press briefings. But Cole's uneasiness ratchets up when his conclusions are distorted by the Green team.
The book is well-paced with a sound plot, though some contend that it is not Crais' strongest. The character development is rather minimal but Cole's attempt at forming a relationship with Louisiana lawyer Lucy Chenier is appealing and revealing. Recommended - will read others.

This is one of the excellent Role-playing books by Joe Dever. In it you must travel to a distant land because there is a disease being created that could wipe out all of Sommerlund, Durenor, and the Lastlands. Armed with the Sommerswerd, and a small vial with an antidote to the plague you must thwart the plan to destroy all of humanity.
Lone Wolf returns...as a Kai Grandmaster!.......2000-03-22
First of all, a great title! It is enough for even the occasional fantasy reader to stop and examine. On the whole, 'The Plague Lords of Ruel' was a great sequel to the Magnakai Quest (books 6-12). For even though the Darklords are defeated, Lone Wolf soon learns that the despised Cenerese Druids are up to their evil tricks again. They plan to unleash another plague! This is an interesting premise, as Joe is describing in more detail an ancient evil responsible for nearly destroying the Elder Magi centuries ago. As ever, the odds are stacked against Lone Wolf, and he must overcome all in his attempt to infiltrate the inhospitable land of Ruel, gain entry to the city of Mogaruith, and prevent such a catastrophe from occurring. A superb gamebook, one of the best in Lone Wolf Grandmaster. The monsters stretch the imagination, while a finale leaves you breathless. New rules are added to spice the continued adventures of Lone Wolf. Memorable, and fantastic!

This is by far one of the overall best of the Deathlands saga storylines. My only complaint? The characterization needs building upon. The comeback of the Trader is hinted at...but never fully explained clearly.
But insofar as awesome action/adventure reading - this one is top-of-the-line.

Jungle Adventure.......2000-08-23
I did not really enjoy this book. I love Sandra Marton and her stories usually, but this was an exception. I guess I didn't like it because of the jungle setting. To me, running from a wild tribe in search of a diamond is just not all that romantic and conducive to falling in love. The characters were good though, and they made up for the plot line, in my opinion. Slade is definitly a hunk, and Brionny was a typical female character for Marton, the kind that argues at every step with the guy. That got a little tiresome, as it usually does for me. But if you like the jungle advenure scene this book is for you. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me.

I bought this book for my daughter for xmas. She wants to be a pastry Chef (thanks to the food network). So far, she has made the carmel corn (absolutely fantastic), the homemade marshmallows (amazing)and carmel (gooey fun).
The only down side to this book is that there are NO pictures, NONE. Not demonstrating or showing the final product. We may need to purchase another book that has pictures.
Seemed interesting, but several recipes didn't work.......2006-12-07
I acknowledge that sugar work is tricky, but after using this book for a few recipes and then giving it away, I have to wonder how well the recipes were tested, or whether they could be described further. I've had much better luck with Nick Malgieri and Alton Brown candy recipes.
Amazing resource and how to guide.......2006-11-04
This book has really helped me learn so much about candy making. I have been making family recipes for chocolate candy for a few years now and finally decided to buy a book to learn more (my Grammy taught be but passed away last year and I still had so many questions). I now know why certain batches I made failed and why last year I got a weird color on my chocolate covered pretzels. I would probably not suggest this book for true beginners but if you are somebody like me who has little experience and no formal training this should truly be your ultimate guide book. I do wish there were pictures that is the only reason I did not give 5 stars. Thank you Bruce Weinstein!
inadequate instructions.......2004-03-20
I haven't tried all the recipes in this book, but I bought it because I was interested in techniques for making fondant and chocolate-covered candy. However the techniques are not well described and simply wrong - for example the method for chocolate tempering leaves out several steps. I only discovered this when I went to another cookbook to find out what I was doing wrong. Now I use this book for ideas, but other methods for technique. This book is not for novices. Very disappointed.

I bought this book because I had others in this series--love that ultimate ice cream and ultimate brownies--and I'm not disappointed. I'm not much of a candy maker, never made any in fact, but I've started with the simple things in here and it's been really fun. I love making these easy treats for my kids and friends. They've been a hit at church pot lucks! So despite what some people have said about this book, it's a great book for a great value--and I just love these guys on the morning show on Comcast!

I bought this book hoping for some basic advice about horses with vices. What I got was an interesting but altogether not very helpful collection of letters that addressed VERY specific problems. The answers did not include anything that really helped me as a rider either. All in all, it's a neat read but more of a borrow-from-the-library than a good buy.
Enjoyable but no new revelations.......2005-08-16
Unless you've totally missed the boat with natural horsemanship, you know that the key to doing anything with horses is having patience, a theme that is repeated over and over again in every section of this book. I needed help with a bucker, and Jessica's bucking info basically reiterated what I already know. Check saddle fit, and call in a professional trainer. If I had the money for a professional trainer, I wouldn't have bought her book.
Best Horse Advice Book I have EVER read!.......2004-07-01
I have been suscribed to Jessica's HorseSense online newsletter for some time, and as soon as I found out she was putting a book together I knew I had to have it. I recommend it to ANYONE who wants to know more about horse behavior. Jessica explains everything in an easy to read and easy to understand manner. She addresses almost every problem that horse owners and horse riders have and the advice is just plain great. I would love some day to be able to meet her to share my admiration of her knowledge.

This book is a must have for everyone who strives to be a better horsewoman/man. Jessica's perspective challenges us to look at things from the horse's prospective, to ask ourselves if we are communicating the right questions for the answers we get from our horses. Her advice is invaluable to me as I train my two 4 year olds. I refer to this book weekly and have read it cover to cover many times over. It seems that each time I read the questions and answers, I pick up something I missed the time before. Or maybe, the second or third reading, I am ready to Hear that part of the answer! More, Jessica! Keep writing!!

Although not all-inclusive, this book is an excellent guide for pyrex collectors. Because pyrex is so varied and has been produced for a long time, it is a wide category. This book does a great job of grouping, pricing and identifying what is out there in pyrex.

I tend to prefer more complex origami, but have been looking for some good books to help get my children more interested. This book works well for that.
While there are some very simple models in this book, most are not basic, just quick to fold.
The diagrams are very easy to follow and the page layout are attractive. The models themselves vary from clever, to cute and most are quite fun.
Definately a good book to have in a good origami library.

Pop master Jeff Koons offers up a glittery vision of a world distilled from media images and exploded onto canvas. The collage-like paintings in Koons's Easyfun-Ethereal series combine such bizarrely varied items as cold-cut sandwiches with smiley faces, women's manicured feet in fancy shoes, gooey pastries, and landscaped backdrops. Food and female sexual symbols figure prominently in this series of paintings, flying pieces of canned corn layered with floating red mouths and shiny eyelids. And while the erotic nature of food has a long history, e.g. tales of aphrodisiacs like oysters, there is something unnerving about the sexualization of Cheerios and melted American cheese. The book includes an essay by art critic Robert Rosenblum expounding on the references embedded in Koons's work. Rosenblum discusses pop imagery taken from childhood objects and art historical influences ranging from baroque and rococo to pop, abstract expressionism, and surrealism. The author has come up with several new formulas to help evaluate pitcher
performance. PAPA Park Adjusted Pitching Average, RPA Run Prevention Average, IPA Innings Pitched Average, ERM Earned Run Mean, MJP Most jovelike Pitcher. There are brief chapters discussing pitching for each season between 1901-2005. Good Stuff.

This book was bought for me as a Christmas present, and I love it.
First and foremost, it's a breakdown of the history of baseball's no-hitters and perfect games. From the late 1800s to present day, the book chronicles various great performances, and seemingly Herculean efforts of some of early baseball's workhorses.
Some of the content:
-The clutch work of Don Larsen's no-no in the World Series
-The domination of Rick Wise who hit two HRs during the game he pitched a no-no
-The sad and heart-warming story of Wilson Alvarez pitching his no-hitter one year - to the day - after losing his baby boy
-The inspiring Jim Abbot, who played in the majors with one hand, throwing his gem for the Yankees
-Johnny Vander Meer's amazing back-to-back no-hitters
-Even the unfortunate players like Harvey Haddix, who threw 12 perfect innings and lost the game
The book is outstanding, with huge, full-page color photos, history of the game, the impact of pitching and no-hitters, box scores from various no-hitters/perfect games, and assorted tidbits about most of the games.
What's great is the DVD that accompanies the book. There are cross generational interviews, going back to the old days and including some modern players. There are highlight reel catches and defensive gems that allowed some of the pitching performances to become no-hitters or perfect games. There are several appearances of the old, hideously designed, bright rainbow jerseys of the Astros, which, cause nausea, but seem to cause an equal amount of nostalgia related love.
What's more, the DVD includes a workout segment from Major League Baseball where they interview Nolan Ryan. And as an extra to the DVD, the ninth inning of six no-hitters is on the DVD (including Nomo's gem for the Red Sox and Gooden's perfection with the Yankees).
This book, and DVD, is a great buy for any baseball lover. You can't go wrong with this book if you are giving it to an avid sports fan who loves to read and watch sports shows.

Dr. Robert Cottrell's impeccably researched biography gives us insight into the evolution of an outstanding athlete, coach, manager, businessman, visionary, and co-founder of the Negro Leagues. In this book, we not only get a detailed look into the day-to-day life of a ballplayer (complete with box scores-balls, strikes, hits, walks, stolen bases, and outstanding plays). More importantly, we see the panorama of black ball (and white ball) in the early part of the 20th century as we barnstorm the country and Cuba with Rube and his various teams and teammates. This biography joins the pantheon of other works by Dr. Cottrell. In his earlier biographies of I.F. Stone, Nicholas Comfort, and Roger Baldwin, we saw sensitive yet balanced looks at strong-willed men in conflict with oppressive conservatism and prejudice in the areas of journalism, religion, and social injustice. Unlike other baseball books that rates players this one uses a system that is fair and unbiased. The Chapter comparing pitchers of today and years past shares many interesting details and facts. The Chapter rankings from 1-150 certainly give much more credence to who the best pitchers actually were. The biographies of the players are enlightening.
