The Deep Blue Alibi is the sequel to Solomon vs. Lord. In the first book readers met Victoria Lord, an uptight by the book kind of lawyer, who through a series of hilarious twists and bizarre turns finds herself partnered with Steve Solomon, another lawyer who plays by his own rules, to defend a murder case. As the team have almost no evidence, they have to be rather creative in their defence.

In this book, Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord are preparing for another very difficult murder case. In this case, there seems to be more potential murder suspects and too many leaps of faith for the team's comfort. Worse yet, one of these potential suspects is one of Victoria's old flames.

I absolutely loved Solomon vs. Lord. The book was interwoven with various sub-stories and subplots; the characters were clever with amazing chemistry; and the ridiculous events surrounding the actual murder trial were hilarious because they were so realistic. I didn't really expect that the sequel could stand up to my high expectations after the first book yet I actually think I enjoyed The Deep Blue Alibi more that the original book. I think that in already knowing the characters, the depth of their sarcasm, wit, and ability to always get them into strange situations added even greater depth and enjoyment to the story. It's also kind of nice to see that happily ever after never quite looks like what you expected.

Almost, but not quite as good as the first book. But it would be hard to compete with the first one because everything is new and exciting and we are getting to know the characters, etc. But this 2nd story is filled with hilarious lines, and maintains an excellent plot with suspense and emotion.

He's not going to win any literary prizes with these, but I hope he's making a nice living. Each is a fun read. Funny is hard.

If the facts don't fit the law- bend the facts.......2007-06-03

This novel has been compared to John Grisham and Carl Hiaasen, but actually doesn't quite meet the standard of either of the two gentlemen. Truth be told, it ends a lot better than Grisham's latest novels, but the legal part of the story is a pale comparison, and although humor is used extensively, it lacks the edge of Hiaasen and is somewhat repetitive.

The legal team of Solomon (Steve) and Lord (Victoria) are all at sea when a runaway powerboat almost runs them over. It turns out that one of the occupants has a spear sticking out of his chest, and the other is a family friend of Victoria's and their next client. The case takes an environmental twist, not because of the greenbacks blowing across the lobster strewn beach, but due to their client's ambitious plan to build a floating casino on top of a coral reef.

There are several people with a vested interest in getting the casino built, and even more who think the plan should be scuttled and sunk, but the stakes get even higher when someone tries to scare the antiheroes off the case. Red herrings swim through the pages when secrets from the past are unearthed, old flames still carry torches, and meetings are conducted at an exclusive club for the rich and toned, but the biggest obstacle the duo face is their inability to get along.

That's it in a nutshell, ignoring the product placements for Manolo Blahnik, Speedo and the music of Jimmy Buffett. The plot is stretched to breaking point, and you get the impression that hidden within this 467 page novel is a 200 page novella struggling to make a name for itself. Overblown, yet not without its flashes of brilliance, this one is at the heavy end of light reading.

priest has been consistant with its filling of excitment and suspense. i, personally, am not a big reader, i dont read many books at all and one day i bought priest vol. 1 and was hooked. it brings up questions which people have always wanted to ask, but keep silent, but aswell as giving an amazing plot, the drawings and constant action keeps the readers wanting more and expecting nothing but the greatest. with priest vol 15 that is just what happened. although not amazingly action packed, it did supply the reader with enough information to get them caught back up with the story, and it ended by getting the readers ready for possibly min-woo-hyung's best novel of priest yet. this story is gripping and thrilling, and i would suggest anyone who is into western action, with a religious touch, to pick up this graphic novel and give it a try.

well if you're looking for volume 14 you probably already know this is a good manga... oh well. this is a very unique manga, in the story & the art. the cover art is always amazing & inside the book it is just as striking. 'priest' doesn't have tones everywhere for shading; the creator said in an interview in one of the books that toned mangas all look somewhat alike & he wanted something different. i'd say he succeeded in that.

From the opening page, we have it that nothing matches this tale's dreadfulness, uncanny ugliness, and horror. Now, for the people reading it around the beginning of the 20th century (when it was published), this might have held true, but for a reader of the present day, this tale isn't going to strike them as being in the least scary. Basically, the only elements of the story that can be construed as even remotely scary are the presence of two ghosts, who just seem to be wandering around looking for something.

Now, while this tale falls woefully short in instilling fear in its reader, it nonetheless remains a very entertaining read, because the mystery that unfolds in this short tale isn't derived from the scariness it is meant to produce; the tale's mystery is just as mysterious in the absence of fear as it would be if it were presence.

The mystery concerns a governess who has recently taken on employment at an isolated country estate. Her two charges are a boy and a girl, Miles, and Flora, who are both graced with overwhelming physical beauty, intellectually quite adept, and impeccably well behaved. In short, they seem to be ideal children. Miles has actually been dismissed from his school for unspecified reasons, but the governess chalks this up to unfair treatment given all his redeeming virtues. So, all is well until one day she encounters a ghost on her daily walk about the premises.

This encounter starts a chain of events lead to the governess adopting a Sherlock Holmes persona and baptizing Mrs. Goose, the housekeeper, into the role of her Watson. In the course of her investigation, she encounters another ghost, learns what both ghost are after, and who they are, and begins to question whether Miles and Flora's displayed perfection is just a façade to mask their sinister nature. The key to solving the mystery turns on with what caused Miles's dismissal from school and the identity of the two ghosts.

In this brief work, James has crafted a rather well paced mystery that is told with descriptively rich language and with elaborate and fluid prose. In other words, it was quite a pleasure to read.

Dissapointed and Confused!.......2007-09-13

Huh??? I've just finished reading this story and feel as if I've wasted 3 months of my life! Normally, I enjoy this particular genre, Victorian and Gothic settings, etc. Not this time. I'm still left with two questions. First of all, were the "ghosts" real or a figment of the narrator's imagination? Secondly, I was dying to find out what the young boy had done to cause his expulsion from school. Also, the narratives were drawn out way too long! After the first ten pages, I was bored to tears! I'll give James one more chance before I cast him aside for good!

I was under the impression this was going to be a rare find of a thriller. Instead, I found it painfully boring, laborious, and way too chatty. I certainly could have gotten the point in ten pages or less. Save yourself the effort and avoid this one.

It's a hard read because there is no happy ending. Read it not from the paranoid governess' point of view, but from that of her defenseless charges and you have the story of what happens to too many kids these days. With their parents too self-absorbed to care about protecting, or even just raising, them, these kids are figuratively left -- like those in the story -- on their own, while the P.C. police is given full charge of their upbringing. Those who survive do so by absorbing the self-destructive thinking, which society and the schools demand of them. Those who resist, suffer the consequences because, like the self-righteous governess, the P.C. police is incapable of examining its own culpability in any harm which results from their actions.

Not worth the hype.......2007-07-01

This is the second Henry James book I have read (the 1st being Washington Square) and in both cases, I have not been very impressed. Henry James had great ideas for stories, but he really did not execute them well. Now, I really like literature from this time period, but James stifles his narrative with so much unnecessary language that one gets lost and the suspense of the story falls flat.

I did not find this story in the least chilling and was often frustrated with James' style. Others might find James a good read, but not I.

Colin Forbes demonstrates to us once again that he is a master of suspense. If you buy this book you will not put it down until you're finished with it. He keeps the plot moving at thirty miles per hour and never lets up. So keep your eye on the tramp.

Fantastic recipes, puzzling errors.......2003-12-17

First and foremost, I highly recommend this book. I just ordered a copy of it for my mother. The recipes may take a lot of time, but they aren't tricky. The results are delightful. I've only made half a dozen things but all have turned out very well.

I agree with other reviewers that there are puzzling discrepancies. One recipe called for "9 ounces of pecan halves (about 3/4 cup)." By the time I had weighed 9 oz of pecan halves, I had about 7/4 cups. So trust yourself, some, when things don't seem "right".

But don't let that stop you from using this cookbook! Fantastic stuff.

I bought this book recently when I saw her at a cooking demostration. I have made quite a few items already and they have all turned out great and the people I have given them to keep asking for more.

I felt the presentation of this book was great and there are a lot of unique recipies. I did try to make the blueberry shortbread and had a problem with it. The consistancy was just not there. After reading someone's else's review here on Amazon, I see I was not the only one who had a problem and perhaps there was something left out of the recipie?
I also tried the cake on the front cover which everyone did love, but I have to say that it made way more cake batter than the pan size and even though I didn't use it all it overflowed all over the oven. I would say that this cookbook may be for someone with a little more experience than a beginner who is not used to anticipating or judging when things don't look quite right! The choc. cake and topping was a big hit though regardless of the big mess in my stove!!

i love the pictures. love the trio suggestions. her instructions are detailed and clear. i love that the baking supplies necessary are noted in the margin of the recipe so one doesn't need to go searching in the middle of a recipe. most of my desserts came out superb.
however, i also found a mistake - the twinkle twinkies don't quite puff up enough to fill a 9x13 pan. they were flat so i used a 9x9 pan instead. anyway, it was a great idea and tasted fine but the ingredient list needs to be rechecked.

This book relates basic dog care information in a fairly well written format. I also purchased the boxer training book from the same author thinking there would be some help not offered there. If you have already purchased a boxer, then I would skip this title and only get the training book. Much of the information is redundant between the books except the deciding if you really want a boxer part.

Getting a Boxer? Get this Book!.......2005-08-11

I bought this book when I first adopted my deaf, white boxer. This book passed my first test - the author doesn't say that deaf boxers or white boxers should be killed. It's also a great introduction to boxers. There is information on boxer history, picking out your boxer, bringing him home, health and starting training. It's not a complete guide to everything, but is a wonderful introduction to the boxer dog. It gave me a better idea of questions to ask the vet and training questions to pursue.

Arabella Boxer's Herb and Spice Handbook is a valuable reference and a distinctive cookbook. Both of these aspects are easily overshadowed, though, by this book's picture-perfect, miniaturized, coffee-table presentation. (This volume is, in fact, a somewhat abridged combination of two other Boxer books, The Spice Handbook and The Herb Handbook.) In her introduction, Boxer explains that spices were used variously as medicines, incense, dyes, and cosmetics before being relegated mainly to culinary applications. The recipes show how conservatively we use herbs and spices in comparison to past eras, when a salad included comfrey and burnet along with easily a dozen other greens and herbs. And now, outside of some ethnic dishes, we almost never use cinnamon in savory recipes, reserving it almost exclusively for desserts.

The first section of this book is a directory with entries for 43 herbs and 38 spices. Each includes the plant's Latin name and information on its history, cultivation, culinary and medicinal uses, as well as color photos. One discovers, for instance, that scallions are merely the immature stage of various kinds of onions and that eating them stimulates digestion and helps ward off colds and flu. Of the 100 recipes provided, most dishes are as enticingly simple as barely hard-cooked eggs served on a bed of spinach and swathed in a creamy pureed-watercress sauce that is also good with poached fish and chicken. A few choices are decidedly sophisticated, including an intriguing pheasant braised with lemon grass, juniper berries, ginger, chervil, and garlic. As a British food writer, Boxer is noticeably less conservative in using dairy products and fat than many Americans tend to be. This is a great volume, for the reasons the other reviewers have sited. I just didn't care for her style because it seems too amateurish. It was not something I would want to imitate.

great resource for creating stencilled trompe l'oeil.......2002-04-09

This is a terrific resource for getting you started on trompe l'oeil stencilling. The book has MANY photographs and drawings to illustrate technique and finished objects and, after several introductory chapters that focus on the use of stencils and paint effects, is organized into a series of projects. Within the context of these seven specific projects the author describes various techniques, such as using a multi-overlay stencil, shading, stippling, creating woodgrain, pitfalls to avoid, freeform stencilling, etc. Each project is accompanied by a pattern that can be enlarged on a photocopier and then used to make the stencils you'll need to complete the project. The projects described are a rose border, teddy bear, keys, grapevine, shelf with crockery, umbrella plant and marble fruit bowl.

It is a book u would like to own. Contains step by step stencling instructions & very good illustrations too. Painting instructions like overlaying & many beautiful designs have been provided in the back of the book. THis book has also covered the 3D stenciling with attractive designs & innovative ideas. U can just paint every where u want to.

Tromp Loeil using stencils.......2000-05-16

WOW! This book packed so much in for so little. It is perfect for any one intrested in Tromp L'oeil and feels they can't draw or paint freehand. If you can draw this will expand your library in a positive way. There are over 150 pictures all step by step lots of stencils to cut out most have overlays wich make the picture look handpainted, since the overlays eliminate the bridges. A lot of fun will be had with this book

I thought the book had good ideas with adequate instructions - especially for someone who wears a ponytail almost everday. I feel inspired to start doing my hair more often. The illustrations could have been a little better, but I was mostly satisfied with this book. I'm going to order one for a friend.

Deeply Comforting.......2002-02-02

I used to have a great deal of trouble sleeping. It was a mixture of insomnia (due to a great deal of worry) and fear of going to sleep (due to inevitable nightmares). Thank God(dess) that I came across this audio interview with Alice Walker. There is nothing more soothing to a frightenned child in the night than the sounds of a voice of a loving mother.
This tape includes an interview as well as poems that Walker recites with an occasional backdrop of Bluegrass/Folksy music. She discusses with genuine concern issues such as the creative writing process, religion, the repulsive act of Female Genital Mutilation (which she has researched and written about elsewhere), anger and rage, remorse, reunion, animals, racism, meditation, silence, personal identity, and many other topics.
This interview took place in Walker's home in Northern California and you can sense the utter peace, silence, and a very deep spiritual focus surrounding her dwelling. Her presence (from just hearing her voice) is deeply mysterious with a quiet power.
It is probable that only die-hard Walker fans will search this tape out. This is really a shame. But, I suppose (as Patti Smith once said) those who seek feel the glow.

The voice of an angel of fire.......2002-01-27

I loved Alice's writing early on, but when I heard this audiotape, I was mesmerized by her soft, breathy lovely voice. It was then I got a sense of the fullness and width of the lady's heart, social conscience, love, and grounded spirituality. This is a lady of courage and integrity. A wonderful introduction to the author.
