When a writer dies, how do we reconstruct the events of his life? In this book Vassilikos invents a new narrative style, the story is told by a biographer as he researches the life of a dead author, Glafkos Thrassakis. Throughout the work there are snippets from Thrassakis's writings and other writings the biographer chooses, this novel is the product of the fictional biographer. Such as the following from Ronsard: "Greece bore me, France buried me. Normandy will keep me here to rot. O, proud fate that oppresses all men, and makes a Greek die in Constant."(6) The biographer informs us that this investigation can never end, "since such an inquiry ends only with the researcher's death".(9) In a recent newspaper article I learned that a long forgotten interview of Walt Whitman's with a local college newspaper was recently rediscovered by a college student, long after his death we are still re-discovering Whitman articles, hidden in obscure places. The biographer presents his info as he receives it and alters his views as he finds new evidence. He states first that Glafkos was devoured by cannibals(4) but as his research progresses, he finds more of his writings and better evidence, we find that the cannibal story is false and his demise was different(283-284). The novel is refreshing since the narrative style is totally new. "This then was life? To wake and work just to go to sleep again because you had worked?"(326) Words like that, that describe the lives of millions and what it means to work, show the gift of the author in keenly observing the world and putting this world to ink. Τhis work is a product of true literature, with characters that are fake but act real, with insights, wit and humour that defy time and stand out in this translation across cultures, from Greek speaking to English speaking.

This book does not really conclude since the narrator cannot stop writing, and Vassilikos considers the work a sort of fictional biography of his own life. This book was first published in Greek in three volumes in 1974, 1975 and 1979. An allegedly definitive edition was published in 1989 by Gnosis, only for seven years to have another revised definitive edition published by Livanis, only to have a 60 page insert bound and appended to the book since the author could not help himself. When the English translator meet with Vassilikos he decided to cut the 200 page Roman Notebooks section from the English edition, perhaps it could be translated as a sequel.(vii-viii) Truly this endeavor can only end when someone dies, not the fictional narrator, but Vassilikos himself. May he live, since I feel I do not know nearly enough about Thrassakis.

I am very gratified to find another five star review for this marvelous book. A friend lent me a copy of "Z" a number of years ago and I've been wondering if another book by Vassilikos would make it over to the United States. Vassilikos is one of Greece's premier authors, alive and writing. Out of the doric temples folks! Greece has a thriving literary scene that I am thrilled to see moving into the U.S market. "The Few Things I Know..." is a stirring and remarkably funny novel. The translation is lucid and often quite poetic. I too recommend this to anyone who is interested in international fiction.

A Masterpiece.......2002-12-13

I loved Vassilikos's novel "Z" and I was eager to read this new work. It was everything I hoped for, and more. Although I know far less than I should about the historical background against which Vassilikos is writing, the book was engaging, witty, and ultimately profoundly moving. There is so much material here, and it is so varied and so rich, that by the time you finish you feel as if you have been a fan of the fictional writer Thrassakis all your life. This book comes highly recommended for anyone interested in top international fiction.

That just made my heart skip a beat, as I truly knew that the character that I have grown to love in the past 700 pages or so, has begun to develop into a real human being.

Duane has a real knack of bringing characters to life, giving them personalities that make them just jump out of the page and into your imagination. It's like they're real people.

"Storm" is an excellent installment to the Harbinger trilogy. In it, we meet new characters and see the reoccurence of many old ones, as well as a nice way to show first contact with an alien species that communicates, shall we say, "strangely" at best.

My only gripe is that there are a few sections where Connor spends too much time milling over ideas and thoughts in his head... a bit more action would make the book sizzle!

I would recommend it to anyone who likes good SF, especially the Star Drive setting in particular.

The second of this series satisfies.......1999-04-20

Although not truly inspiring, the book remains consistant with the first one where our hero attempts saving another group of aliens against the malicious company.

Also of interest, we find out more about the mysterious ghost ships, and exactly what the luck stone is.

I had to keep putting the book down after 50 pages or so to get a break from it. Otherwise, this one definitely is a keeper for star drive fans.

This book is intended to be a "period piece." It's not today's sci fi (exactly) - look at the title, look at the cover. Just great stories and great fun!

A little old-fashioned.......1998-06-05

This is a book for thirty year old (or more) people (like myself) : when you read these stories you think that you are watching again one of that old remakes, like "The Bubble". There is action, there is suspense, but there is a lack of novelty. It is like a cookie, it is nice, but you already know the taste.

Feast for the Eyes.......2007-08-28

What a feast for the eyes! I loved the photography and her lavish table settings. I, too, entertain a lot and use themes to guide my table settings and my menus - so I loved all the ideas that she shares. She plans each "event" around the seasons - utilizing the flowers, food and color palette of spring, summer, winter or fall. I use this book as I do cookbooks - as an inspiration for whatever ocassion is on tap - paging through for anything that jumps out at me.

I thought the shots of the flowers were particularly bold and graphic - encouraging the readers to use fresh flowers as a centerpiece or accent whenever possible.

I have been a huge fan for many years and recently visited Weatherstone (her home in Connecticut) when she had a wonderful tag sale this past June. She was there (in that magnificent setting)signing books and was as gracious and beautiful as ever. Her line of gift wrap is gorgeous - encouraging us all to take the extra time to make even the package look spectacular. For those of you who don't know - she has a wonderful quarterly newsletter available through her website www.CarolyneRoehm.com. It is packed full of sumptuous details and ideas to stimulate all your decorating and entertaining senses.

This book is absolutely amazing. Although I do not have all the resources as Ms. Roehm, the recipes are supurb, while the suggestions and ideas are easily adaptable to the smaller scale and your personal environment. If you are looking for a resource on interior design, think again...this is an entertaining guide. There are also lots of helpful hints regarding color usage and flower selection. This book is my new entertaining Bible! Step aside, Martha!

Nice recipes ..........2003-02-25

I've only made a few of the recipes so far, but they turned out very nicely. In particular, the lemon-dill pasta will become a staple of mine from here on out.

My only complaint is that not all recipes for the suggested menus are included.

This is a concise, illustrated guide to cat breeding, written by an experienced DVM. I got this as a gift for someone interested, and she loved it. I may try cat breeding eventually, and I appreciate all worthy information, especially books, that I encounter.

This book is very informative and helpful. It really gave me alot of ideas about how to breed my cats. Being a new breeder of Ragdolls, it really opened my eyes to what I was doing wrong. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that has never had experience with breeding. The only thing I found to be not included in the book, was the different breeds.

Excellent source for the novice breeder. Tells you in clear terms when to seek professional help. Explanations of medical situations done in clear,easily understood terms. Offers a very real view of the joys as well as some of the dangers of breeding pure bred cats. Helpful information on behavior of the queen, stud and new born kittens. Hazel Harrision has created a wonderful art instruction book that delivers more than I realized it would. Drawing, watercolour, oil & acrylic and pastel - just some of the sub areas of this book. It really will teach you somethng. I thought I was kind of an artist and after going through this book I found how much I did not know. I really needed this book.

I highly recommend this book as a gift to any budding artist in your life. No matter on little or how much they know - this book will be of value. It really is one great teaching tool. It is like taking a class on art.

When Frederick Douglass died in 1895, writes Linda O. McMurry, Ida B. Wells "was his logical heir apparent; they had collaborated closely on several projects. She was better known than W.E.B. DuBois and more ideologically compatible with Douglass than Booker T. Washington"--but it was considered too belittling to black "manhood" to have a woman leading African American politics.

Wells first rose to prominence when she wrote about her lawsuit against a railroad company that had kicked her out of a first-class seat. Throughout the 1890s, she crusaded vigorously against the rise of lynching as a tactic used by whites to intimidate the newly freed black populace. She also worked closely with the suffragist movement, but broke with white feminists who preferred to downplay or ignore ethnic dimensions to social justice. In the generation that followed Frederick Douglass, no African American was more prominent, or more outspoken, than Ida B. Wells. Seriously considered as a rival to W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington for race leadership, Wells' career began amidst controversy when she sued a Tennessee railroad company for ousting her from a first class car, a legal battle which launched her lifelong commitment to journalism and activism. In the 1890s, Wells focused her eloquence on the horrors of lynching, exposing it as a widespread form of racial terrorism. Backing strong words with strong actions, she lectured in the States and abroad, arranged legal representation for black prisoners, hired investigators, founded anti-lynching leagues, sought recourse from Congress, and more. And one of the ten most impressive people I've ever read about, period. I can't say too much about how awed I am of the life of Ida B. Wells. Had I been her contemporary I would have worn out my knees trying to propose to her until she married me. McMurry's book shows how this woman has been short changed by history due to her uncompromising belief in African American equal rights and self-respect. She and people like another African American who doesn't get his due, Monroe Trotter, have been marginalized merely because in their day they demanded the same degree of self-respect and political and educational rights that Caucasians of every stripe took for granted. They were considered "radical" and "militant" for not compromising the way virtually all other African American leaders did during their era. Their marginalization goes a long way in explaining why the African American persona has never featured the degree of chutzpah and daring it has needed for us to advance farther than we have. Instead, all of us have been too heavily influenced by leaders promoted over Wells-Barnett and Trotter, who instilled caution within us as a people, virtually as second nature. Not even W.E.B. Du Bois conducted himself with the degree of pride and fortitude that people like Wells-Barnett and Trotter did. McMurry's book deserves a place on all reading lists in American history classes so that everyone can truly understand the troubling forces that made this country what it is today, and the manner in which people like Wells-Barnett were purposely silenced as part of a plan to keep African Americans oppressed.

This book is interesting and easy to read, but hard to take. Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a complex person: incredibly smart, brave and strong, but at the same time, prickly and ultra sensative.The book also puts America's current racial and gender problems into perspective, showing us that we haven't come very far from the late 19th century's attitudes toward and treatment of African-Americans and women. This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about a great American or wants to face and learn more about America's shameful history. That said, the author's style makes it easy to read. Amazingly enough for a scholarly biography, I would often find myself reading late into the night because I couldn't put it down.

A worthy treatise about a magnificent American.......1999-06-30

McMurray's biography of Ida B. Wells-Barnett is a rare triumph. Wells-Barnett was a courageous American whose valor is depicted in full color. All too frequently, when there is a discussion of the impact of race, there is a mistaken assumption that black males comprise the affected population. Similarly, when gender is raised as an issue, the false assumption is that white women are the only ones to be affected. Wells-Barnett was an American woman of African descent who fought the societally-mandated strictures of race and sex until her death. I am emboldened by her deeds since too many of the same strictures still exist. I applaud McMurray for her scholarship in this biography's portrayal of the life of Wells-Barnett. This book is definitely recommended.

An excellent history not only of Wells, but of the times........1999-05-17

I came away from this book with new respect for Wells, and her courage. I was overwhelmed with sadness after reading some of the details of the lynchings and the effect on the survivors. The book contains an excellent analysis of the real reason for many lynchings:economic competition.
