Book Description
Fifth in the Kurt Wallander series.
In an African convent, four nuns and a unidentified fifth woman are brutally murdered--the death of the unknown woman covered up by the local police. A year later in Sweden, Inspector Kurt Wallander is baffled and appalled by two murders. Holger Eriksson, a retired car dealer and bird watcher, is impaled on sharpened bamboo poles in a ditch behind his secluded home, and the body of a missing florist is discovered--strangled and tied to a tree. The only clues Wallander has to go on are a skull, a diary, and a photo of three men. What ensues is a case that will test Wallander’s strength and patience, because in order to discover the reason behind these murders, he will also need to uncover the elusive connection between these deaths and the earlier unsolved murder in Africa of the fifth woman.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing thriller.......2007-05-09
Well, I love thrillers, so my opinion is far from unbiased ...
I liked this one, as many of Mankell's, because the mystery and suspense is blended with real life and totally human characters. Good, solid, interesting, clever.
"Though this be madness.......2007-02-21
yet there is method in 't."
Hamlet: Act II, Scene 2.
Four nuns have been found brutally murdered in a convent in an unnamed North African country. A fifth woman has also been murdered. Although news of the murders is suppressed and the fifth woman is never publicly identified a policewoman with a conscience forwards letters found in her possession to her daughter in Sweden. Soon thereafter a series of seemingly unconnected and brutal murders grip the small, Southern-Swedish city of Ystad. The murders are well planned and executed. They seem designed to inflict as much pain as possible. Detective Inspect Kurt Wallander is tasked with identifying the killer or killers and the motive behind the killing. If Wallander cannot discover a motive he must at least learn enough about the killer's method to stop him or her before more people lay dead in strange surrounding. That is the plot of Henning Mankell's "The Fifth Woman".
"The Fifth Woman" is the sixth book in Mankell's Kurt Wallander series. This series is often compared to the Martin Beck detective mysteries authored by the husband and wife team of Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall. Wallander, like Beck, is a police detective in Sweden. Unlike Beck, whose beat was Stockholm, Wallander works in the small southern-Swedish city of Ystad. The Wallander series takes place in the 1990s while the Beck series took place in the 1960s and 1970s. Although I tend to prefer the Beck series, the Wallander books are entertaining page-turners. Mankell stays well within the `police procedural' formula and has not tried to reinvent the genre. However, he has done a good job, through the first books in the series, of developing the character of Mankell and his supporting cast of characters. Wallander is no Sherlock Holmes and gets results more by perspiration than inspiration. He is also a fully drawn character. We see him dealing with the break-up of a marriage, an estranged daughter, and a father who is developing senile dementia. The supporting characters, particularly his fellow detectives, are also well drawn.
As the plot in "The Fifth Woman" plays itself out Mankell does a good job of showing the grunt work that goes into a murder investigation. Mankell also does a good job portraying the relationship of Wallander with his fellow police officers and with his family, especially his aged and failing father. Wallander is shown as a flawed man, a man with a temper and someone who can be more than a bit stubborn. However, I found myself drawn to the character as much for his flaws as for his detective skills.
The Fifth Woman is, in my opinion, one of the better books in the Wallander series and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone interested in a good police story, especially one set in a location outside the United States. Recommended. L. Fleisig
Loved The Fifth Woman.......2007-01-01
I bought this book after reading a positive NYT book review; it was the first Kurt Wallander mystery I had read by Henning Mankel. I live in the Northeast, and in our bleak midwinter here, I sometimes enjoy reading a smart police procedural set in an even darker and colder locale. Mankell is a smart existential writer; I enjoyed this as much as the best P.D. James novels. It was necessary to read with full attention but the reward was significant. After finishing this novel, I ordered two of Mankell's other Wallander mysteries. For those of you who love quality procedurals with highly developed and sympathetic protagonists, this is a natural. Enjoy.
No CSI Technology Found Here.......2006-11-11
While watching CSI the other night I said to my wife, "These programs aren't police procedurals, they are science fiction". Well if you want to get back with the detectives that are out there wearing out shoe leather you might try this novel. Throughout the book people meet their deaths in some pretty strange ways, but the cops in the lower part of Sweden are right on it. They put in long hours taking time out to grab a pizza, hamburger or hot dog (yes, the author says Swedish police officers eat that stuff). So what happens? Does throwing half the department onto the case mean rapid progress toward capturing the killer? Well as the last line of Chapter 20 on page 214 says, "They had nothing to go on. Absolutely nothing." I mean come on, the CSI guys solve these things in 1 hour using all the advanced technology. These cops do use cell phones, and have computers although we are never told what they use them for. Finally on page 277 they begin to have a slight glimmer of what they are looking for.
This is a good, fun book. We watch the detectives scurry all over Sweden chasing down leads. The clues are few indeed. So busy are our investigators that none of them even have time for any of the romances found in most police novels, although when Inspector Wallander's father dies he does take the morning off to attend the funeral.
This is an easy to read, well written novel for those of us who enjoy taking a break from the pseudo-scientific crime programs now inundating television.
Too much like life?.......2006-08-24
Art is an imitation of life, or something of the sort. But art needs to concentrate life, to direct and intensify our attention. That this Wallender novel surely does not do. The author is intelligent enough to know the risk he is taking: to make us endure the dead ends, the non-sequiturs, the repetitious emotional and professional mistakes in fictional police work that also dog our daily lives. So, as one reader accurately noted, we have gotten almost nowhere by page 250...what the reader does not note is that we have almost 100 pages to go...much of it the same plodding. No wonder the Inspector is depressed. Mr. Mankell and a young editor need to talk.
That said, as readers have noted, larger issues of the direction of society, the mortality that perhaps faces policemen more often than the rest of us, etc. make the trip less tedeious. Still, the Dogs of Riga, weighing in at somewhat less than half the length of 5th Woman (and in bigger print) is perhaps as much of a reader's short life as she should give to this cloudy city.

Book Description
The Catwoman is on her fifth life. She has survived witch hunts, ignorance, and poverty. And now, she seeks refuge amidst the company of fifty cats on her own private oasis, a mirage. But when a stranger named Angelo enters her isolated world, Kat is forced to face her fear. Sweetly and subtly, he courts and coaxes her back into the real world, convincing her to become a teacher of history. And Kat, ready to embrace this new struggle, falls hopelessly in love with life, with teaching, and with Angelo.
But when tragedy strikes and the prejudice that sparked the witch hunts of her past resurfaces, what will become of the woman who is "too well-liked by cats?"

We all need a few more lives.......2007-07-30
I thought this was an awesome book; a fresh tale that moves quickly to the point. I would recommend this book to my non-cat-lover friends. I enjoyed it very much.
Would love more.......2007-02-05
This really is a wonderful book. I have loaned it to about ten people (men and women) so far and have had to buy three copies; a couple of them begged to keep their copy. Many people told me it was one of their favorite books, and this group has done a lot of reading for decades! I have tried to get some information about Kathleen Dexter and any other books she has written, but I cannot find anything. All I can do is hope that she will publish again.
Fabulous Reading!.......2005-08-18
What fun reading this novel was! Within such a fanciful setting, the characters are so wonderfully realistic. All my emotions were engaged in the unfolding of this story - I smiled, I laughed, I got annoyed and felt sad. The descriptions are so vivid that I could swear I know where the mesa is located and I KNOW I've met some of the people. I only wish that I had had someone like Kat for my history teacher.
"fifth life of the cat woman" is a great read for pure enjoyment and also for the thinly-veiled moral. This book was lent to me by a friend, but I've bought my own copy - it's on loan to another friend right now!
Strangely beautiful.......2005-07-26
Not sure how to categorize this book...it is unlike anything I've ever read. I don't usually enjoy stories with a supernatural twist but I LOVED this book. Dexter's writing is exquisite and the story is compelling. I found myself actually considering the possibility that someone could be part cat/part human! This is one of those books you're sad to finish.
Exquisite.......2005-05-20
I picked up the book as an impulse buy, adrift on a remnants table in a local bookshop. I liked the sound of the blurb but I had no idea what to expect. My God, what a find! I have rarely, and certainly not recently before this, been so enthralled by any book. I cannot find the words to recommend it highly enough - it made me laugh with its wickedly accurate portrayal of cats and cry with its equally wickedly accurate portrayal of people. This author has a rare gift. I don't know if she's written anything else but I intend to find out - and to grab every precious word of it if she has. Unbelievable. Exquisite. Spellbinding. An exciting, suspenseful story with a good message........2000-06-02
This was an excellant book. It has characters you can relate too, and a very suspenseful climax. It's a good story of overcoming prejudices and enduring trials and hard times. It's about a young girl named Kathleen from northern Ireland, who attends a church youth conferance in southern Ireland. Kathleen is scared and distrustful of the people there, but she slowly overcomes those feelings as she gets to know a young man named Eamonn Kelly. The book continues as Kathleen's relationship with Eamonn develops, despite her father's anger. The story goes on with Kathleen suffering through some terrible hardships because of her father, and her struggles to remain strong and forgive him. It's a good story about love, forgiveness and staying strong through trials. It definitely kept me riveted until the end.

Book Description
A showcase of more than a decade of Dragonlance artwork.
This book features artwork from Dragonlance novels, games, calendars, and other materials created over the past ten years. With pieces from artists such as Brom, Matt Stawicki, Mark Zug, Todd Lockwood, Larry Elmore, and more, this collection features some of the best fantasy art published over the last decade.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating book.......2005-08-18
Compared to other artbooks, this one seems to be printed on lesser (less quality) paper. The pages are black, which is not very usual, thus rather fascinating or unusual.
As for the artworks, I believe that too much space is wasted on the newer artists works, although the elder ones already have books that showcase their art. Some decline in art nicety is even apperent in my opinion...
Rather nice buy though, and I recommend it to anyone who has the money to purchase such a piece of beautiful book.
Dragonlance art creators.......2005-08-10
All fans of Dragonlance "must" read this artbook for further info on the art creators!
this book is awesome!.......2002-10-23
This book contains several absolutely gorgeous pictures... not that any of them are anything less than stunning. Any fan of Dragonlance, or even just fantasy art would love to leaf through this book-lots of fond memories. It also contains bios on the artists, and some feedback on the art; nothing overly extensive, just a few notes from the creator to augment the ideal of the pictures.
However, the real point of this book is that the art is outstanding. It won't improve your knowledge of the fantasy series... but it will give you a lovely collection of its art, and some minor history of its development. It will also give you the proper book titles so you can find those few books that you managed to miss in your searches for more excellent side stories.
Even the "Spectre of the Black Rose" cover picture is included (twice actually) that creepy picture of Soth being my personal favorite. Even Art director Ryan Sansaver said it "Kicks [butt] !"
So I highly recommend it. Buy it! Share it with your friends!

Catch as cat can.......2001-03-04
The Doctor takes Ace back to Perivale, where she wants to catch up with her old mates. But none of them seem to be around, they and others have just vanished, and there have also been deaths amongst the domestic pets. There is something preying on Perivale...
The novelisation of the last regular Doctor Who TV serial, the story is somewhat ironically themed around the concept of the survival of the fittest, and what that can mean to different people. Bringing Ace back home, especially in light of the two preceding TV serials ('Ghost Light' and 'The Curse of Fenric'), seemed a logical step and the story, focusses on her response to a changed home town in comparison with the Doctor's perspective (if you like, an internal and external view of the problem).
While it seems to start off on a small scale, the story grows as the initial oddities prove to be minor manifestations of bigger issues, and the Doctor and Ace find themselves embroiled in a conflict that not only impacts upon Perivale's safety, but places them both under considerable threat - and I'm not just talking mortal peril here, if things go the wrong way they could end up quite different people.
A little overshadowed by the "end of an era" feel, this book is however well written and worth adding to your collection. And you can take heart in the truth of its name: despite cancellation as a TV serial by the BBC, Doctor Who continues going strong to this day. Sometimes survival depends on the ability to change!

conventional recipes with flax added.......2007-05-02
If you're looking for extremely healthy conscious recipes, this isn't the book you want. Most recipes are pretty standard fare, with, as one reviewer noted, "1/4 cup ground flax added". There is a LOT of info on flax health facts and general flax "how to's", including suggestions for how to incorporate flax into your favorite recipes.
For those who are looking for recipes that the "average" American family will actually eat that have a little extra nutrition, this will probably work for you. Personally, I prefer the baked or raw recipes because I found that in sauces the flax adds a slight slimy texture. There are recipes for muffins and other breakfast items, smoothies, bread, power bars, appetizers, entrees and desserts. Ingredients are simple and easy to obtain, directions are easy to follow, nutrition facts are clearly documented. Recipes could be healthier, but the book is still useful.
Wonderful, informative book.......2007-02-16
I loved this book for the great information about flax and the way it is presented, in an easy to understand manner. I don't usually like books like this but I read it from cover to cover. I have also made many of the recipes and they are easy to follow plus each recipe has Weight Watchers points per serving which is an added bonus!
Well written, useful, with alot of variety.......2006-09-06
I was impressed with this book's variety of recipes and cooking ideas. Although I haven't done many recipes, just reading about the foods that can be made with flax seed have led me to be more creative in using flax seed in recipes (like salads and oatmeal). My family likes the bread recipes of this book the most. Most importantly, it's a small jump from reading this book to acting on it the information you learn inside.
Good information, a few decent recipes.......2004-04-08
First, there's some really good information on flaxseeds in this book and that's why I'm giving it four stars. Some of the muffin recipes sound good to me, but that's about it for the cookbook portion. Pancake syrup and light corn syrup are common ingredients used in baked goods. Most of the smoothie recipes call for ice cream or frozen yogurt (sounds like a milk shake to me). As for the rest of the recipes - just add 1/4 cup ground flaxseed to whatever you cook.
Not for health conscious vegetarians.......2004-03-13
I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, organic grains, fruits and vegetables are a priority. The recipes in this book include the following items: canned fruit in syrup, JIF peanut butter, Rice Krispies, caramel topping, white flour, white sugar, chocolate chips, raspberry preserves, sweetened condensed milk, frozen white bread dough, not to even mention the chicken, bacon, and other meats. Does Elaine Magee think that by adding 1/3 cup of ground flaxseed she can "undo" all the junk???
I would rate is "minus 10 star", if that option were available. (of course, no one remembers subjunctive mode anymore)
Book Description
With their prominent jowls and furrowed brows, French Bulldogs may look a little like Winston Churchill. But when a Frenchie raises his broad, sweet face for a kiss, you know you've never seen a more appealing sight.
Frenchie lovers will quickly testify to the undying loyalty of this little dog with big bat ears and a most curious expression. With the wisdom of an old soul in his eyes-and his endearing, satisfied snore-this playful and sometimes stubborn little pooch has a big heart and a personality all his own.
A clown always ready for tricks, the French Bulldog laughs with his whole body and is a big part of his human family. Frenchie Kisses captures the spirit of this one-of-a-kind breed.

Recommended for the photos.......2007-08-18
Beautiful photos marred by intrusive gratuitous captions.I gave my copy to my 18 month-old neighbour who loves our dogs and will enjoy both the pictures and the drippy text.Could still be a museum gift shop book, but in the toddler section.
Frenchie Kisses is a '10' for French Bulldog lovers!.......2006-08-19
I saw this book at PetSmart and fell in love with the photographs and captions, and was thrilled to find it on Amazon. Amanda Jones captured the essence of the dogs she photographed very well, and managed to match appropriate celebrity quotes about dogs as well as provide random humorous captions for the featured shots. I have this book on our coffee table, because we enjoy paging through it often. We have a Frenchie and have found these dogs have particularly hilarious personalities - Amanda Jones has done a great job in capturing the heart of French Bulldogs in this book. It's a 'must have' for owners and lovers of this breed.
smiles and kisses.......2006-03-03
A great book for "easy reading" and enjoyable times. Brings a smile to your face without even trying. To know the BRENCHIE BREED is to know this book.
Frenchie Kisses.......2005-07-20
As a Frenchie owner, breeder and show person for more than 30 years, I love the breed. The photos in this book are endearing to any Frenchie fancier.
Perfection.......2005-06-11
I'm a bookseller at Barnes & Noble, and this book has made the rounds among the cashiers, hiding out behind the desk! There's something very Zen about these photographs, about the dogs themselves, and the captions are very funny and endearing. Why am I writing a review for Amazon when I work for Barnes & Noble?? Because this is a beautiful and captivating book, a funny book, and if you're not already a dog lover, this book will make you one. This one made it into my personal collection.
Customer Reviews:
Check it out before you buy!.......2000-04-03
I agree wholeheartedly with the other review of this book. However, I have faith that it one day will be valuable tool for me. For now, it sits on my shelf.
Not recommended for the novice glass collector.......1999-03-31
Unless you are familiar with the Fostoria line, this is not the book for you. As a collector who is just acquainting herself with glass, the arrival of this book is met with great disappointment.
Most pieces are unmarked, so a good reference to the patterns and color shades is valuable. Of the 240 pages, only 48 contain color pictures. The majority of the patterns are represented by black and white catalog clippings and silouette line drawings. Some patterns have no visual representation at all.
There is also a small section dedicated to reproductions with the warning that no value can be given to reproduced items. However, there are no tips on how to spot a reproduction.
Perhaps those already familiar with the patterns would find this a valuable tool, as the listings of pieces in each pattern appear to be complete and the patterns are sensibly listed in alphabetical order.
Customer Reviews:
A truly GREAT book by a truly great teacher........2005-03-03
I purchased this book when it first came out. I made a pillow top using the instructions in the book. It turned out beautifully. I am an intermediate quilter. Her ideas and instructions are wonderful. If you do not have this book in your quilt book collection, add it when ever you find it. Her second book, "Mariner's Compass Quilts: New Directions" is just as good and includes some paper piecing instructions and patterns. However, if at all possible, find a copy of the "An American Quilt Classic" book.

Book Description
Since the 1960s, many artists have incorporated ecological concerns into their work, an endeavor that has required new strategies in art-making. To explore recent American manifestations of these interests, the David and Alfred Smart Museum commissioned new projects from artists Mark Dion, Peter Fend, and Dan Peterman, each focusing on interrelationships between particular organisms--human beings-and a specific group of sites--a museum building, a river landscape, and a university campus. The results, exhibited at the Smart Museum during the summer of 2000, evoke the varied scales, from the microscopic to the global, at which human actions affect the environment. This catalog documents each of the artists' projects through an array of images and words: Smart Museum Associate Curator Stephanie Smith provides an introduction and brief overviews of the three projects, each of the artists contribute statements, and photographers Susan Anderson and Tom van Eynde document--in over 100 images--the processes and projects that comprise the exhibition.

Book Description
The principle that no child should be left behind is now codified in the laws of the United States, but Jefferson Wiggins grew up in a different United States, under a very different set of laws. From the night the Ku Klux Klan came to hang his father to the afternoon he received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his life's work, Jeff's memoir is a story of human triumph over adversity, a story of individuals who can and do make a difference in the lives of others. Most of all, his memoir reminds us of the extraordinary stories that often lie below the surface of seemingly ordinary lives. No reader can help but be moved to tears by this compelling, inspirational work.

Another Generation Almost Forgotten: A Review.......2003-09-15
This is a tale, elegant in its simplicity, that has the capacity to speak to every American about the core issues of what it truly means to be an American.
Jefferson Wiggins escaped from the horrors of the Ku Klux Klan and the pervasive poverty of rural Alabama to forge an extraordinary life as a decorated Army officer and noted educator.
Dr. Wiggins has endured experiences that others can only point to in history books. What sets this book apart is its ability to directly engage the reader on an emotional level. It is more than inspirational. It is meaningful.
It is meaningful for us to be reminded that hope is the beacon that lights the eternal path. And that young Jeff Wiggins overcame poverty, discrimination and ignorance only with the emotional and practical support of the human "angels" in his life.
Do I have a criticism? The book is too short. At less than 240 pages there aren't enough pages to turn quickly. I would have wanted to learn more about Jeff's experiences in Korea, for example, and known sommething more about Jeff the person, his friendships, habits, even his foibles during his Army and university days. I guess I will have to wait for a sequel.
A Generation Almost Forgotten is about a cause we can never forget, especially in today's troubled world. Every human being has the inalienable right to live up to his or her potential. That's Jeff's story and ours, as well.
