Book Description
Sherlock Holmes once declared: “This world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply.” And when Dr. Mortimer asked if the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles was not of interest, Holmes said only: “To a collector of fairy-tales.” And yet Conan Doyle, fascinated by psychic phenomena his entire life, and author of many horror and supernatural stories, did give Holmes a few problems of the otherworldly sort, even if they ended in rational explanations.
Featuring an all-star cast of Doyle devotees that includes Caleb Carr and Daniel Stashower, hosts of Baker Street is the third collection of original mystery stories featuring the literary world’s greatest detective (Murder in Baker Street; Murder, My Dear Watson)—and these stories bring Holmes and Watson up against the supernatural. This latest installment in the New Tales of Sherlock Holmes series—edited by Martin H. Greenberg, one of crime fiction's most awarded editors and anthologists—brings the reader more adventures where the ultimate disbelieving detective tackles mysteries with a distinctly strange flavor, featuring crimes and situations that may possibly be not of this world.

"This agency stands ftat-footed......".......2006-08-01
First the objections:-
1. Sherlock Holmes has become the epitome of rational and logical thinking principally because he adhered to the statement ("No ghosts need apply") firmly and unflinchingly. Several stories show him deviating from this principle grossly.
2. The atmosphere of most of the stories were so stifling that I felt drowsy (extremely unlikely for Holmesian stories).
Now the praises:-
1. The authors try to open a few new portals to other dimensions in the Holmesian world.
2. "The Adventure of the Late Ourang Otang" was fabulous.
3. Most of the pastiches were well researched and good.
My conclusion: enjoy it.
All right but hardly edge of your seat stuff........2006-03-17
Any book that contains Sherlock Holmes and the supernatural has some conflicting issues to begin with. As Holmes clearly did not believe in 'ghosts' its hard to think of ways around this dilemna if you're the writer. This book assembles a veteran cast of Holmes writers, from Loren Estleman to Daniel Stashower plus some newcomers, namely H. Paul Jeffers, whom I've read before as a biographer, not a mystery writer. He does a good job in a classic mummy story. But most of this collection of stories are strangely inert; not much exciting ever happens. There is not a bad story among them, although Stashower's choice of a short story from Seldon's (of Hound of the Baskervilles) POV is curious at best but most of the stories are not very memorable. After you're done, that's that. It doesn't help that the best writer here, Caleb Carr, only does an essay but it is as scholarly and witty as all his other works. (If you like his style, be sure and check out The Italian Secretary, which is a Holmes ghost story that works!) The best stories here are Gillian Linscott's Adventure of the Late Orange Outang (a nice bit of the surreal here), Death in the East End by Colin Bruce, a truly spooky story, Scandal in Drury Lane by Carolyn Wheat and Bill Crider's Adventure of the St. Marylebone Ghoul, a rousing story of bodysnatchers - or is it? If your taste runs to a bit stronger helpings of suspense, just plain weirdness and craziness like space aliens in your Holmes stories doesn't bother you, you might want to check out the older Shadows Over Baker Street, a potent mix of Holmes in the Lovecraft universe. For traditionalists, this is the better collection.
The ghosts didn't apply.......2006-03-13
I had hoped this volume would be a combination of the best of Doyle - his Holmes stories and his horror stories. It fails to do justice to either. It's more like Ann Radcliffe writes a Holmes horror story, with everything neatly explained in the end. Only Loren Estelman's tale of Holmes and Watson facing a man claiming to be the devil really worked, Estelman left the ending in doubt as to what really took place. The essays at the end were nothing more than padding for an already slim volume.
Sherlock Holmes vs. the Supernatural - - Misfire........2006-03-03
GHOSTS IN BAKER STREET is the third installment in Martin Greenberg's "New Tales of Sherlock Holmes" series. Methinks Greenberg went to the well once too often.
The theme of this third volume centers on history's supreme rationalist tackling cases of a supernatural bent. I was skeptical of the idea but, like most Sherlock Holmes fans who are forever hoping some modern day author will recapture Doyle's lighting in a bottle, I plunked down my $16.95.
Unfortunately the stories in GHOSTS IN BAKER STREET fall pretty flat. Despite some attempts to create a properly spooky atmosphere, the stories are unaffecting. The only story that made an impact was "The Devil and Sherlock Holmes," the reason being that author Loren Estleman has "his" Holmes pay Watson a compliment in words that could have flowed from Conan Doyle's pen.
Like the previous two volumes, both of which I enjoyed to a great degree, this volume has several non-fiction essays on Holmes at the end of the book. Though some of these essays have been interesting, I would have much preferred that Greenberg included more stories.
All in all, an optional purchase.

In these twenty-one tales from two out-of-print classics, Fetish Fantastic and S/M Futures, some of today’s most unflinching erotic fantasists turn their futuristic visions to the extreme underground, transforming the modern fetishes of S/M, bondage, and eroticized power exchange into the templates for new sexual worlds. From the near future of S/M in cyberspace, to a future police state where the real power lies in manipulating authority, these tales are from the edge of both sexual and science fiction.

Book Description
Book 1 in The Asgard Trilogy
From acclaimed science fiction author Brian Stableford (Year Zero, Designer Genes: Tales from the Biotech Revolution) comes the first book in a staggering new trilogy featuring the most incredible backdrop of all - an entire planet. Asgard is a planet-sized artifact presently orbiting a star on the edge of the galaxy. It seems to consist of a series of concentric spheres, each of which was once host to several complex civilizations. Since its discovery by the Tetrax, scavengers from dozens of other species have accumulated in a hastily improvised city, busily scouring the outer layers for artifacts that might offer clues to the advanced technologies involved in the construction of Asgard. One of the few humans involved in this hectic search is Mike Rousseau. Michael must fend off predatory aliens, militant humans, and the rest of the races that are vying to be first into the hollow core of Asgard. But everything changes when he discovers that Asgard is still inhabited by another alien race - and who knows how they will react to the realization that there is an entire outside world above their heads?
Brian Stableford lives in the UK.
Customer Reviews:
Reminiscent of Larry Niven's RingWorld.......2006-09-22
Asgard is a multi-level Dyson sphere in which the main character, Mike Rousseau, finds himself inexorably drawn towards the center of the artifact as well as the center of an eons long battle between software entities. Mike remains a wise-cracking, Voltaire-quoting reluctant hero throughout, saving the day only when no one else remains to do it. Unlike Larry Niven's Ringworld series, the Asgard trilogy does not discuss the technological aspects of the artifact much.
The first in the series, Asgard's Secret, is impossible to put down, after a somewhat slow start, with lots of action and well-defined characters. There are brief and interesting philosophical discussions on topics like the anthropic principle and convergent evolution. There is also an amusing discussion of the chicken and egg conundrum. None of these philosophical discussions takes much time away from the action. As I neared the end, I was glad I had bought all 3 in advance since I wanted to keep reading Mike's adventures.
The second novel, Asgard's Conquerors was not quite as good. Why is it that trilogy writers often seem to run out of steam? The novel didn't really bring the fascist regime of the conquerors to life. They seemed very one-dimensional, unlike the main characters, all of whom carry over from the first book. Book 2 still has enough action to keep you reading past your bedtime.
The third, Asgard's Heart, unfortunately became repetitive instead of creative, without adding significantly to any of the earlier philosophical discussions. Further, a major portion of the novel swapped back and forth between chapters of good hard science fiction action and chapters with very fantastic battles in virtual reality. Much too much like the fantasy genre for my taste.
I'm rating them 5, 4, and 3 stars, respectively.
thrilling complex SF.......2004-10-24
Asgard is not a planet, but instead is a man made edifice consisting of a series of shells with spaces called levels between them. Each level contains habitats with their own ecosystem, but no one has found a way to traverse past level five. Levels one through five are for practical purposes dead and no portal to go beyond has been found though various species from across the galaxy have come here seeking the way in to the legendary treasure supposedly at level six and beyond.
Mike Rosseau has been on Asgard for more than twenty-five years seeking the access beyond the known levels. Mike's friend Saul has found the key to level six, but before he can mount an expedition he is killed and the newcomer Myrlin he was mentoring has vanished. Star Forces convince Mike to travel through the levels using Saul's book and glyphs as a guide. They seek the death of Myrlin, an android, who, if not stopped, could end human civilization.
Asgard is a fascinating place with worlds within worlds and by book's end the exciting story line has barely scratched the surface of the artifact sort of like a contained string theory. There is plenty action that in some ways will remind readers of Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brian Stableford shows why he is regarded as a grandmaster of science fiction with this terrific novel and it is no secret that more treks to uncover ASGARD'S SECRET will follow soon.

Instructions too brief.......2006-07-26
This book has great pictures but the instructions are almost too simple. For a beginning cook, it is hard to follow the brief instructions.
Solid, simple cookbook.......2006-02-19
This slim cookbook covers a lot of common Chinese-American dishes, including chicken salad, roast pork, hot and sour soup, moo shu pork, egg foo yung, broccoli beef, sweet and sour shrimp, fried egg rolls, and fried wontons. The recipes are generally quite easy to follow, and are all beautifully illustrated, so you know what the end result is supposed to look like.
If you want to learn to cook the dishes that many people are used to getting from Chinese restaurants, this cookbook can be a great place to start.
stupendous cook book.......2005-10-03
I have loved Chinese food for many years and have often wished I could recreate my favorite dishes at home. I've tried a few other cookbooks and those are currently sitting in my cupboard gathering dust. Some have good recipes but all require lots of ingredients and preparation time.
Chinese Cooking for Beginners on the other hand is fantastic. The recipes are easy to follow and can be made with only a few basic ingredients. The six dishes I've cooked so far were absolutely delicious. My wife jokes that she suddenly has a Chinese chef for a husband.
There are several dozen other cookbooks in the Wei-chuan cooking series. Based on how impressed I am with this book, I recently ordered several others.
So do your stomach a favor today and buy this book!
Excellent Chinese Cook Book.......2004-07-12
This is an excellent Chinese Cookbook for beginners. I have tried cooking many of the dishes; the instructions are easy to follow and the dishes turn out delicious. I am very happy I bought this book and will purchase more books from this series.
Also, I did not think the instructions in English and Chinese were confusing (by the way, I can only read English).

drawing all right, story can be improved.......2006-10-25
Read this book with my son. The author tried to write the story in a dramatic way, but the story is not very decent and the writing is weak. Will not read it again.
Bought this one because we liked The Runaway Rice Cake.......2006-02-23
We loved The Runaway Rice Cake but my duaghters and I were disappointed with The Story of Chopsticks. Even though we celebrated Chinese New Year with an orgy of Chinese fairy tales and assorted other books and DVD's appropriate for the holiday, the girls, 4 & 6, did not want to reread this book.
From a Happy Reading Mom.......2002-07-19
Another "hit" from Ying Chang Compestine! When I asked my eight year old what he liked best about The Story of Chopsticks, he proceeded to tell me the entire tale. Well, that's the best endorsement....is it not? As for me, anything that encourages thinking outside the box and reminds my young children to wash their hands before eating gets five stars from me!
30 minutes after reading it, u want to read it again.......2001-12-12
I was attracted to this book by the illustrations by Yongsheng Xuan, which are a folklike cross between classic paper cuttings and stained glass renderings. The story is Ying Chang Compestine's fantasy of how chop sticks (or Kuai-zi (KhWy-zzuh)) (quick sticks) were invented in imperial China over 3,000 years ago. In addition to the story, the reader gets instructions on how to use chopsticks and a recipe of rice pudding with mangoes, maple, cherries and pineapple. The story is interesting and it shows how the ingenuity of a child can be accepted by adults. It also shows how siblings can stand up for each other in the face of adult questioning, and how a family can commercialize an invention for future prosperity.

Book Description
Seventeen years ago, when she adopted a neglected, orphaned thirty-year-old parrot named Tiko, the internationally renowned ornithologist Joanna Burger entered one of the most complex relationships of her life. Sullen and hostile when he entered Dr. Burger’s home, Tiko gradually warmed up, courting her during mating season, nursing her vigilantly through a bout with Lyme disease, and for a while even fighting her husband for her attentions. In time theirs was a relationship of deep mutual trust.
The Parrot Who Owns Me is Joanna and Tiko’s story, as well as the story of the science of birds, and of parrots in particular. Woven into the narrative are insights and fascinating revelations from Dr. Burger’s work—not only about parrots, but also about what it means to be human.
Customer Reviews:
You don't have to have a parrot to love this book!.......2007-10-11
Very informative but easy to read. Not so dry and scientific that it will turn you off. Who knew parrots were so smart and had such specific personalities. You will fall in love with Tiko but, as the author mentions, beware taking on the ownership of such a demanding bird. I have a friend who owns a parrot and knows a great deal about them and she says the book explains so much to her about her little 'green feathered husband' as she calls him.
great, if you want to kill your parrot.......2007-05-04
This woman is misleading thousands of readers as to what's acceptable in terms of rearing a parrot. She very often endangers her bird, everything from feeding it a poor diet to letting it chew on furniture (most have stains and sealants that can be toxic). I also see a lot of people voting these bad reviews down, which is fine, but realize that just because she "loved" her bird doesn't mean she did the right things for him. She sure left her other parrots in a rut fast enough.
A love story.......2007-02-16
I purchased this book several years ago for my bird club. Everyone who has read it adores it. Being bird owners and lovers we can understand what this person has gone through with her beloved parrot. We know that many parrots empathize with their caretakers. We also know that birds will most likely bond with one person, and heaven help the other person if they get in the middle.
I don't know of one person who read this book that didn't get teary eyed when she was sick in bed and the parrot groomed her hair on the pillow. It's a close feeling when your bird sits on your shoulder and preens itself and you at the same time.
I need to read this book again....and again. It's lovely...get one and read it. You'll enjoy it.
Can you say Dysfunctional?.......2007-01-05
This woman is an ornithologist and "behavior expert" on parrots. Yet she indulges in the worst possible parrot husbandry. Letting the bird attack her husband when he's trying to be intimate in their bedroom? Letting the bird lunge at her family/friends when they try to open the fridge? Indulging in and encouraging mate behavior? No wonder I had never heard of her among the respected avian academic and behaviorist community (Barbara Heidenreich, Dr Susan Friedman, Steve Martin). Do yourself a favor and read one of their books, not this self-indulgent, narcissistic memoir where Dr Burger seems intent on showing the readers how exclusive her bond is with Tiko (even to her husbands' detriment), and how vitally important she is to the bird. I wonder if she'd even WANT this bird to live a balanced life and have close relationships with other people? (I think not). Frankly, I think she should do some behavioral studies on herself and her own self-serving motivations.
Parrot People Will Understand.......2006-11-14
This was a lovely book. As a "bird person" who is the companion of an Umbrella Cockatoo, I could really identify with Dr. Burger and what she was going through Tico and her other birds. I highly recommend this book for anyone who knows or has an interest in parrots.

Customer Reviews:
A touching, fascinating memoir -- read it!.......2002-08-18
"The Parrot Who Owns Me" is a delightful memoir that should appeal not only to bird lovers, but to the general public, as well. The author is a faculty member at Rutgers who has specialized in the study of gulls and parrots. As a scholar, she's written 14 books, but this one is different: It's a memoir, a story of the relationship between her and Tiko, who sounds like one great bird.
The memior follows her adoption of Tiko when he was in his 30s, after the two elderly ladies who owned him passed away. He became depressed and agressive, but slowly, Joanna and her husband brought him around. Ultimately, Tiko really bonded to her, quite literally falling in love with her and choosing her as his "partner."
The storytelling in this book is engaging. In between the long segments about Tiko's development, the author intersperses information about her worldwide scientific field research, some of which was inspired by Tiko, and this information sheds light on parrot behavior in general, as well as that of her beloved Tiko.
She also briefly discusses the parrots she'd owned prior to Tiko, and their stories are touching. I did, in fact, cry more than once as she reminisced about the birds who are no longer with her. That caught me off guard. It's a surprisingly touching story.
Note: I read the book in paperback form, but I imagine that it's just as enjoyable in downloaded form! My experiences with downloadable texts has been good thus far, and I likely would have downloaded this one had it been an option at the time.
In conclusion, then, I think this is an excellent book that has a strong appeal to it. I'm sure that's in part because I have two parrots, a cockatiel and a budgie, who own me -- but there's so much more to this story! I highly recommend it.

A must for the art quilter.......2003-06-07
This book is a classic study in taking the leap thinking outside the box (or pattern in this case) while creating quilts. Nancy's book shows how to use your environment to find and create design ideas.
Great book...really shows her influences.......2000-10-15
I think that this book is great for anyone who is interested in Nancy Crow's work...it primarily shows her 80's work but is still good for visuals...the back section shows her influences which will be inspiring for those looking to find something else other than quilts for an influence within their work...worth a peak.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

full of inaccurate information.......1999-04-09
This book was written for quick money I am sure. I read this book in the eighties it must be a re-release now. Speaking to Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, niether girl was interviewed. This book is all hear say and lies, even the names of the girls in photos are wrong, she identifies Cindy as Florence. Read Mary Wilsons two books or Cindys book that is being written now. Save your money!!!!

A WHITEWASH!.......2005-04-27
I bought this book hoping to get some additional insight into one of the finest musical groups to come out of American pop. Instead this is a book that avoids any of the tough issues of the development and life of this band, and seems to have been constructed of Motown press releases. In fact, this seems like a book that was commissioned by Motown itself. It's a pretty rosy and peachy picture that seems to avoid any of the drama and heartbreak over the ouster of Florence Ballard from the group in 1967, or the events that led to it, or the additional tensions from which now well-known stories have come. Get it right from the horse's mouth and take a look at Mary Wilson's DREAMGIRL AND SUPREME FAITH, for a much more accurate and heart-rending portrayal.
