Book Description
Michael Connellys most famous character, Detective Harry Bosch, has been thrilling readers for a decade. Now available in one omnibus edition are the three books that brought him to life. First introduced in The Black Echo, Bosch hunts the brutal murderer of a Vietnam buddy. Then, in The Black Ice, a narcotics officers disappearance sends Bosch on a trail of murders leading from Hollywood Boulevard to Mexicos dusty back alleys. In The Concrete Blonde, Bosch must hunt down the Dollmaker, a macabre serial killer, before he strikes again. Together, these three novels are the perfect way to discover, or rediscover, one of our most fascinating and well-loved sleuths. A Darkness More Than Night, also featuring Harry Bosch, is a New York Times bestseller and a national bestseller. Connellys sales continue to rise. Since its January 2001 publication, A Darkness More Than Night has shipped more than 235,000 copies. The Black Echo won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Connelly has also won a Nero Wolfe prize, a Macavity Award, and an Anthony Award.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful writer.......2007-05-14
Michael Connelly is an incredible mystery writer. The plots are well-done, the characters believable. I would highly recommend any of the Harry Bosch mystery novels.
Great stories.......2007-05-12
Another hit by Michael Connelly. I love his Harry Bosch books, the depth of character, attention to detail and beautifully tailored plots make for a completely enjoyable read. This one is great because you get three complete Bosch books for the price of one. Of course, if you like to lie in bed and read the 3 in 1 format makes it really heavy to hold up, but it's worth the effort.
I'm a writer myself so I know how hard it is to turn out such consistently great tales. If you'd like to check out my book click on The Towers Of Greed and if you buy it please buy it from seller Whitebear54 since that's me, the author.

As a Connelly addict I have to say this is the place to begin...the beginning. One read and you too will be hooked.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully Dark Fairy Tale.......2001-09-26
"The Coachman Rat" begins like a Cinderella story, except it's told from the rat's point of view. He's turned into a coachman one night and given the name Robert so a young scullery maid (Amadea) can attend a prince's ball in style. He was given just that one night as a man, but it was enough to convince him he must remain human.
So, after the spell was broken, Robert went in search of the "godmother" to have her change him back. He doesn't find her until a very pivotal scene when Amadea is condemned as a witch for speaking to animals (Robert) and invoking demons (the "godmother"), and she and her husband (the prince) are killed by a mob in public. It's one of my favorite parts of the book and puts an interesting, realistic twist on the traditional Cinderella story.
Robert does get transformed back into human form, but he's tormented by his growing hatred for man and seeks revenge for Amadea's death by organizing an army of rats like the Pied Piper.
The story has no sex or graphic blood and gore, but I don't consider it a kid's book. I would recommend "The Coachman Rat" to anyone who likes darker fantasy / fairy tale stories with animal characters, particularly rats. It's very entertaining and will make you think afterwards. The ending is also appropriate considering the rat's stigma during the Middle Ages.
Imaginative, but very dark.......2000-11-14
This is a well written and highly imaginative tale of what happened to Cinderella's coachman after he was turned back into a rat. Unfortunately the story is dark almost to the point of becoming a horror book. If the truly dark, grim fairy tales appeal to you, you will love this book. I like mine a little lighter.
A Further Tale of the Coachman.......2000-02-06
The Coachman Rat goes past the fairy tale of Cinderella and shows in historical perspective what would probabably have happened to many of the major characters. Cinderella and her prince are set up as tyrants and consorts of witches, leading to overthrow and death. The story of the vengeful rats retaliation is also historically based and adds a great twist. Highly recommended for young adults and adults alike.

Outstanding Read!.......2004-02-07
I'm not too sure but I think this was my first AH book. What a wild ride, is history what you think it is? Talk about taking the red pill!
Parallel Universes & Quantum Mechanics.......2003-11-12
This is James Hogan's best book in my opinion. I will be short. It's about the theory that all possible outcomes of events occur based upon their probability. In doing so parallel universes form as a result! So we have worlds where WWII never happened and competing futures try and alter the past to form NEW future universes more ameniable to those losing their power in what they feel is an unfavorable future.
This book has time travelers going from 1976 America where President Kennedy sends them to go to the 1930s to try and alter the course of history to save mankind from the coming nuclear war with Nazi Europe. They can only go back so far because they only have a standard 1970s power facility and not the Fusion Power plants of the 21st century where the whole process was developed. From THAT 21st century meddlers from the future helped bring Hitler to power and cause the recession of the 1920s rise to the great depression. Hilter of course turns on his masters however.
Eventually these travelers from a version 1976 facing Nazi Europe fights to cut off the 1930 Nazi gate to the their 21st century patrons.
Great cameos for Edward Teller, Albert Einstien, and many other prominent politicians and scientists of the 1930s!
Great read!
A Fertile Plot.......2003-05-29
Yes, the characters may be a bit cardboardish. Yes, the writing might be a tad clunky. But Hogan makes up for all of his mechanical shortcomings by inundating the reader with massive amounts of plot -- and I loved every minute of it. It's been so long since I've read a purely plot-driven novel, and it was refreshing.
The main character of this novel is probably Ferracini, whom we most identify with since we experience most of the book with him. He's a special-ops kind of guy who doesn't understand everything but carries out the various missions to safeguard our world from Nazi Germany and Co. Winston Churchill would probably get second billing, and he's as colorful as ever.
There's a lot of science and history in this novel, but Hogan never under- or overexplains. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read. History buffs and scifi fans will both get something out of this novel.
Well-integrated history with lots of twists.......2003-04-09
I'm not a history buff and I know very little of pre-war British politics, but The Proteus Operation has planted a seed in me to learn more. Who can say SF is worthless? That being said, I believe Mr. Hogan has done an admirable job explaining WW2-era history (three separate timelines worth!) so that readers don't become too confused, nor does it bog down.
Time Travel is a favorite SF conceit and I love the idea of it; the power it enables those who are time travellers, but there are a lot of problems that our human minds based in this reality can't really resolve. One of the ways to rationalize time travel is with the alternate universes theory (which Hogan has used before in "Thrice Upon a Time" 1980). While this makes it easier to understand, it has its own problems. To Hogan's credit he has created lots of compelling solutions for these. I enjoyed the time travel mechanics very much and I liked the story and plot development.
The characters are a bit forgettable and the famous ones are too quaint, but the plot moves along well enough that it doesn't bring down the quality of your time spent with the book. My biggest gripe is that towards the end I lost my suspension of disbelief. There are many twists and turns in the story, which make it more and more exciting as it progresses, but the showdown near the end at Hammerhead just spoiled it for me with one big coincidence and too many convenient happenings.
I had to force my way through the final part of the book as my interest had completely waned. The good score of 4/5 stars is based on how much fun I had up until that point and how it has interested me in discovering more about this era in history.
Good, but..........2002-10-07
It's overly long, complex and confusing. But then, it was one of Hogan's earlier novels. He's gotten much, much better recently with _Bug Park_ and _Paths to Otherwhere._ He's got his hard science down, here, but his characters aren't the most realistic. He's no great stylist, either, but fortunately whatever flaws he has, he overcomes them with his energy and imagination. It's fun that the author put the late Isaac Asimov in this book, but not so fun that he didn't understand what JFK, FDR and Churchill really were. Contrary to the what the _very_ confused reviewer below thinks, this is not a book about libertarianism. His later ones are, though. Overall, this is a pretty good book, but not one of Hogan's best.

Customer Reviews:
Great cookbook!!.......2007-09-15
This cookbook is great. The recipes are good...simple, everyday ingredients and not hard to cook. I made 30 meals and so far they have all been good. I even pass on the 10 recipes I tried to some girlfriends and they all ordered the book. This book has simplified dinner time for me. As a full time student and working part time I don't have time to make dinner, but now we are eating home cooked meals 5 days a week!
Great Family Friendly Meals!!!.......2007-09-12
My friend and I traded 12 different meals using this cook book and we LOVE IT! They have all been hits! She cooked double batches of 6 recipes and I did the same and then we swapped. I highly reccommend this book for families who want home cooked meals the whole family can enjoy!! We did this before my 3rd kiddo was born and the meals have been a lifesaver!
Good recipes.......2007-08-31
I have not tried all the recipes, but the Chicken Black Bean Chili is remarkable. I did add 2 tablespoons Cumin to the original, but it os wonderful both ways. I recommend the book to all who cook ahead of time.

Best book of it's kind that I've found yet........2007-08-30
I've tried the Wilson & Lagerborg OAMC book, but that one wasn't what I was hoping for. While the recipes in that one are frugal, they're all too similar. I then tried a weekly cooking book by Theresa Albert, and that too was not what I was looking for. When I say a week, I mean seven days. When they say a week, they only mean five. Well I can plan that myself, thank you. Frustrated, I began checking out books from the library and of them all, this book is THE book. The tips alone are worth the purchase. There's a handy equivalents chart (ex: 1 whole chicken = 3-4 cups cubed meat), recipes for seasoning mixes (ex: spaghetti, onion soup, etc.), an easy planning method and plenty of recipes to choose from. The ingredients in the recipes have the standard amounts for a typical dinner, but just below that there are amounts to triple it, so you never need to do it yourself! The idea is to pick out ten meals, triple them and you have your monthly menu. I like that so much better. I currently have the library book, but I just ordered me a copy so that I can have my very own. I can't WAIT to get it!
Useless.......2007-08-15
Almost all of the meals in this book are unhealthy (too much fat and refined carbs, too little vegetables and lean meat). In truth I knew they would be so from a previous review, but I thought I would at least learn freezing technique, but the introductory section is very short and very disappointing. This book is mostly recipes and thus unsuitable for me.

An informative book.......2007-02-22
This is a very good book--the pictures are great and worth the price of the book themselves. The "curious Golden Retriever behaviours" are basically curious behaviours of ANY breed of dog, with one or two exceptions, but still it was a very interesting book and it helps you to understand why your dog does some of the (somewhat disgusting ) things it does.
Them loveable Goldens..........2007-01-26
I gave this book 5 stars due to two things: excellent, delightful pictures of golden retrievers in all sorts of places and the text
which must be read out loud to be appreciated. You won't get a vet's answer to these such questions as Why are Goldens always Napping?
Davis gives an answer that napping helps them avoid some potential while-awake danger and hey, people who nap a lot are a friendly lot and so are napping Goldens. No technical best-in-show tips here. But a fun,fun read and very pleasing photographs of those dogs who never really act like real dogs. And we love them.
Great Book!.......2007-01-11
I gave this book as a Christmas present, and the family that I gave it to has read it multiple times! They love it! They go around the house saying "Oh, it is a Golden thing" about all that their beloved "Mollie" the Golden Retriever does!

Very Helpful To Any Blue Ridge Collector.......2006-02-08
I found this very useful. I have seven different Blue Ridge Pottery books that I used to identify over 1000 pieces I owned. Now I have dispursed my collection and have no use for my books so I will sell them.
A must-have for serious collectors!.......2000-10-24
This book is a wonderful follow-up to their first book! The pictures are clear; as are the names, descriptions and prices. What more could you ask for to assist you in making knowledgeable decisions about Blue Ridge Pottery? We have used this book and their previous book to help us price new pieces for our collection and have found them both to be invaluable! This book is especially good at showing some of the harder-to-find Blue Ridge pieces! Another "must-have" for any serious collector!
Blue Ridge China Today.......2000-07-07
This book has been extremely helpful to me. I couldnt find half of the patterns in the other Blue Ridge book written by Betty and Bill Newbound. I buy and sell Blue Ridge so I am constantly looking for the names of patterns. Frances and John Ruffin are WONDERFUL people. When I cant find a pattern in their book, I email them with a picture and they tell me the pattern name. It cant get better than that! :))
The most organized & helpful summary of Blue Ridge china........1999-04-13
I have every book published on the subject of Blue Ridge china & Southern Potteries. This is the one that my friends and I use on a daily basis, rarely looking at the others. This book is the first one that we pick up and the one we find the easiest to use and the most beneficial. The authors show hundreds of samples of Blue Ridge in an organized fashion that offers assistance with pattern names, shapes and pricing. The authors obviously used their own collection as well as photos from the collections of others. They have shown Blue Ridge as it is found today (many times with defects). It is a tremendous help to me and I could not do without it! I highly recommend that anyone interested in Blue Ridge dinnerware or china pieces purchase this book. You will not be sorry.
very poor, to many errors, poorly organized.......1998-10-04
You would have thought that these authors with the resources at their disposal (collections they visited and chances to take picures of real good pieces)would not have used so many bad pictures. Teapots, candy boxes etc. with mismatched lids. Pattern names placed with wrong plates etc. Would not recommend this book!!!!!

A Tripmaker!.......2007-07-22
I just returned from Paris, and this book was invaluable. We were able to find great restaurants in every neighborhood we visited. Only one was a dud (I believe ownership must have changed.) The rest were wonderful, and learning about Stoher's Pastry alone was worth the price of the book! This was my fourth trip to Paris and we've never eaten so well. I highly recommend this book.
Food Finds in Paris.......2007-06-09
Gustafson's book can be helpful to most travelers. Besides listing interesting spots to eat on a budget, she includes in-depth info about French cuisine, dining customs, and manners, as well as decent maps. With all of the new airline weight restrictions,it would be even better if it was a smaller size.

Excellent, concise hotel info. I have used this book for several years and found it to be correct. Keep going back to one of her recommendations and never am disappointed. Good value for price of hotel is the key here.

Sandra's description of our hotel (Hotel Residence Monge) was exactly on the mark. Friends have used her books for other cities and found her views accurate also. I would not go to Europe again without first consulting Sandra!
A Useful and Enjoyable Book for Paris Lodging and Shopping.......2001-12-28
Paris is a challenging city when it comes to lodging. Hotels abound, but are they any good? And hotels are usually crowded, so if you don't like yours, you might be stuck. Fodor's is some help, but its reviews are short. This book spends the better part of a page on an average review, and some are longer. Prices are up to date and evaluations are accurate. The book is arranged by District, so once you know about where you'd like to be you can research in detail. I do wish, however, that she would mention hotels she didn't like that she saw, because there are many hotels one encounters while in Paris and it would be nice to know why she didn't pick the ones she didn't. A minor complaint, however. A good bonus is her inclusion of many more hotel web sites than Fodor's. And believe me, most of the decent hotels have sites with photos and info, as well as reservation capabilities. Be sure to follow her advice to use email or fax to confirm and get your confirmation in writing. She also addresses shopping and does a good job. We went to some places she like and were pleased.

Out of Date.......2003-03-25
We found several problems with the information in this book. Places that were recommended were no longer in business or not as described. Some of the information about reservations, lines, etc. were written for peak season travel so we did a lot of things to avoid lines that were not there. Interesting background and some good tips, but if you have time to prepare, I would recommend something more in-depth and written more recently.
Excellent, compact, detailed.......2000-03-31
I was looking for local travel information, and there was a treasurehouse of telephone numbers and Website listed here. This might not be for the spanking rich traveling with an unlimited budget, but for a budget minded traveler like me, I found the tips indispensable. The book is well bound, and like some other books that I clowsely examined, this one did not *seem* like it would fall apart into three unasked for sections in the middle of my trip. A nice map at the end is an added bonus. For little more than ten bucks, I found this hard to beat. If you only wanrt to carry one guide with you, and like me, you're a first time traveler to France, this should probably be the one. Excellent and highly recommended. END
great book to show you unexpected treasures.......2000-03-01
This book may be a little dated (1998 publication), and perhaps that's why I found it so useful, as I was traveling in early 1999. But one memory--one of my favorites of the city--was thanks to this book. We were looking for a place to eat and I suggested this West African place I had bookmarked. The guide described hearty dishes served family-style in a friendly neighborhood setting. We found our way through the winding Parisian streets and came upon a very unassuming storefront in a dark alley. My companions were hesitant but I insisted. What we found inside was exactly how Fodor's UpClose described it. The food was some of the best we had on our entire trip and cheap too. We were kids on a budget! And the book was right on with the rest of its content. I recommend this series and only hope a new edition is put out before my summer backpacking excursion! I give it only 4 stars because of the two-year-old edition.

Book Description
This is an epic story about race in America, the tragic legacy of colonialism, and the inhumanity of the prison system.
Customer Reviews:
A gripping true story, a must read!.......2007-04-09
Conversations with the Capeman is an absolutely stunning, beautifully written book about the life of convicted murderer Salvador Agron. Richard Jacoby weaves a brilliant and sensitive memoir of his real-life interviews and relationship with Agron. Jacoby paints a compelling, unbiased portrait of a tragic life; from Agron's youth as a member of a violent New York street gang to his conviction for a murder that he may not have committed, to life beyond prison. This impossible to put down book reads as if one is watching a motion picture. It involves all the elements of a modern-day epic; heartbreak, mystery, deception, love, friendship, redemption, and ultimate tragedy. This novel, of all the books I have read, has had the biggest impact on me...Simply amazing.
Riveting, heartbreaking and triumphant--an emotional masterpiece.......2005-09-21
Each page of this beautifully written book brings raw emotion to the surface. Richard Jacoby paints a vivid picture of the poverty stricken, abusive childhood that surer than any court sentenced Salvador Agron to a life of alienation and despair. Yet despite being the youngest person ever sent to New York State's electric chair, Agron possessed a spark of human spirit that would not die. It is Jacoby's great accomplishment that he lets Agron's story speak for itself as he takes us through the dark alleys of Puerto Rico, the doo-wop drenched streets of New York and the cold corridors of state prisons where despair is plentiful, yet hope lives. If you want to know why we should treat our kids better and why giving people in trouble a second chance is NOT some mushy-headed idea, read this extremely engaging book.
Powerful.......2004-08-26
This insightful, sensitively written book which brings to light Salvador Agron's life that was imprinted by race, sexual abuse and the condemnation of society gave me not only a new awareness of the criminal justice system, but of human redemption as well. Reading Conversations with the Capeman was a powerful eye-opening experience.
Blew me away.......2004-08-17
Conversations with the Capeman, the story on which the musical Westside Story is loosely based, blew me away. I literally read this 500+ page book in two days. I almost could not sleep for want of finishing it on the first day.
The life of Salvador Agron provides a window into humanity that society tends to overlook when confronted with a crime in light of the death penalty. Mr. Agron's life can be viewed as social commentary that makes this a very important look at our penal system but more importantly it renders him human.....not an evil animal. The loyalty that Salvador garnered from people he didn't even know was overwelming. This is the first book that ever brought me to tears to the point that I could barely see the words on the page while reading the last two chapters.
I subsequently bought Paul Simon's Songs from the Capeman and was pretty impressed by the way that he captures Salvadors life in music.
A Journey.......2000-12-06
In Conversations with the Capeman, Richard Jacoby brings to light with concise objectivity, and yet a fierce sense of empathetic compassion for his fellowman, the bizarre and wretched existence of Salvador Agron. Jacoby, through both letters and a personal observation of Agron during their twenty year relationship...takes his readers on a horrifying journey with the capeman. From the mean streets of New York's Spanish Harlem where he roamed 'till the age of sixteen as a mindless, illiterate young predator...throughout his twenty odd years where he experienced the entire cycle of hell in New York's prison system. From the initial empty minded rebel, to the well read psuedo-revolutionary, tutored by elders in Marx..Lenin..Mao..Franz Fanon, etc. ... to Jesus Christ for some sense of redemption, to homosexuality to fill the emptiness in a soul where nobody had ever truly lived. And finally, culminating in death shortly after his release from prison. Salvador Agron was never to know a serene existence. But as small miracles would have it, the dehumanization process was over, and somehow, I couldn't help but lay this book down with the feeling that the "Capemans" ultimate victim was, Salvador Agron.
