The last time I read a book by Steven Saylor was "Venus Throw" in the mid 1990's. Saylor's books are easy to read and very entertaining.
Writing about ancient Egypt is always fascinating, and even more when Cleopatra and Julius Caesar are part of the plot. Saylor describes Cleopatra in such a convincing way that it would make any man straight.
Gordianus the Finder, the main character, is especially charismatic. The story is told by the same character, always in the first person, so the book takes a personal, intimate tone from the beginning to the end. The plot intensifies when Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy throw a dinner party to honor Caesar. Caesar's judgment takes place in the midst of the festivities and still entangled in this irresistible love triangle!
Leave it to Saylor to make an indirect reference to Harmodias and Aristogiton. I think he's one of the few authors who make reference to all the famous male couples in history.
(I think he mentioned Alexander and Hephaistion in another book, but can't remember which one).
The beginning of chapter XXXI is a good example of Saylor style. Gordianus complaints to Cleopatra about the stench of the Nile River:
"There's nothing beautiful about the Nile. It's fetid, smelly, dark and dank! The Nile brings death!"
And Cleopatra replies:
"Yet it brings life! Some men make the same complaints about the sacred delta between a woman's legs. And yet, from that place comes new life. Silly men, turning up your noses at the slippery fluids and strong odors of fertility!
You'd rather play with your hard, shiny swords and spears, and watch the blood spurt from each other's wounds!"
I laughed when I read that passage. Sexuality expressed so bluntly and so subtle at the same time.
Finally, I would like to say that it Saylor is an exceptional writer, and I am looking forward to read "Roma."
Saylor's best in the Roma Sub Rosa series!.......2006-11-06
Having read most of Saylor's novels in this series, and being a die-hard romantic, I was left biting my nails after finishing "A Mist of Prophecies," and needed to find out what happens to Gordianus the Finder's dearly beloved wife, and will she find in Egypt the life-saving cure she is seeking ... or I shall be aflicted with agita for years to come. So,I was glad to get this one into my eager little hands.
Without further ado, and getting into long descriptions of the plot since others here have already done so, let me only blare my opinion to all and sundry:
The Judgment of Ceasar is Steven Saylot's BEST novel in the Roma Subrosa Series!
Engaging and Thoughtful "Roman des Romans".......2006-06-28
I very much liked Steven Saylor's writing - the initial chapter
describing an encounter with a storm at sea off Alexandria
gripped me, and provoked my own visual images, much more
effectively than most such descriptive writing does in
adulthood. There are a number of books, indeed series,
that put detective stories in a Roman setting, and the
overall standard is quite strong. This one however is
a bit ahead of the pack in terms of unquestionable, although
not slavishly used, scholarly background, and emotional insight.
I will immediately look for other titles by the same author,
who was unknown to me before this book. For those who have
seen the excellent HBO series "Rome", you will wonder if the
writers on that series had read this book - although I am
suggesting inspiration not plagiarism, and I am not sure
the date of publication would have made it possible for
there to be any cross-fertilization. However the book
does focus on the same period as Rome Series 1, and the
same struggle between Pompey and Caesar as a plot driver.
The long and winding road.......2006-05-04
Together with his characters, Saylor has developped, and remarkably so. Clearly, his style has become very fluent, almost easy, particularly when compared to the elaborate academic prose marking the first ones.
There is little mystery by now, if there ever was much of it in the series, which is fair enough. The author decides how to write the novel after all. I like him being engaged in the matter of bringing antiquity to a wide audience.
In this last novel, I found two matters most disturbing: Gordianus has now almost taken over the role of a court joker. It is too far fetched that he would be able to meet that many prominent figures at such ease and candour. Had he indeed spoken as he is pictured as having done e.g. to the Egyptian royals, I sincerely doubt he would have survived for very long. I don't really think they would have bothered to listen. Moreover, I have great difficulties in seeing a Roman pater familias as such an idealised, very "US-American WASP head of family" (used in a non-derogatory sense here). Ever forgiving, fully accepting unruly slaves, and adultery, and renouncing his disowning Meto all appear as highly anachronistic notions. I have to agree with Ilse Frederiksen, it is so 1950s.
Still, since the historical novel almost is anachronistic by definition, I shouldn't blame Saylor too much, perhaps.
From my point of view, it's just tedious, though.
Cleopatra, Caesar and Gordianus: a fun threesome.......2006-04-10
'The Judgment of Caesar' is the latest of many historical novels by Steven Saylor involving his ancient Roman sleuth, Gordianus. By now we know Gordianus quite well, and now we are entertained by having Gordianus caught up in mischief, mayhem and murder in ancient Alexandria. Emperor Caesar also has issues with a sibling rivalry between Cleopatra and her younger brother. Caesar ultimately decides which of the siblings would actually rule Eygpt. While we all know the outcome I found the entire story to be very engaging. Saylor does a great job weaving in Gordianus, thus seamlessly blending in fiction into the non-fiction.
My only complaint with the story is the "cutesiness" of Gordianus and his family. Earlier Saylor novels portrayed the family as individuals with backbone. However they now have gone spineless and syrupy sweet. I suggest Saylor goes back to his old ways.
Bottom line: a fast, fun and educational read. Recommended.

I suppose you'd have to have a certain sense of humor when reading this book (as with any of the other Wuntvor books). It's hilarious, it's intentioanlly cliche, and it's just so much fun to read. I wish it weren't out of print, or else I'd buy this for all my fun loving friends! =o)

A social history snapshot that just happens to be a cookbook.......2007-02-13
After almost 100 years, the Titanic disaster continues to fascinate historians and the general public. The snapshot of Edwardian culture is nowhere more apparent than the famous "last meal" that Sunday. Thanks to menus kept by survivors as mementos, and some indepth research, Mr. Archbold has written up the dishes served in all three classes as recipes that, theoretically at least, anyone can serve.
In the early 20th century, the exploits of the super-wealthy (facilitated by the laissez-faire attitude of the gov'ts of the time, and lack of income tax) were followed as closely as celebrities today. One aspect of this conspicuous consumption was the ability to afford truly staggering meals. The meals themselves evolved from the attitude that someone who is well-off will be somewhat portly, as least for males, and the large meals typically served by farm families.
The Titanic, catering to the tastes of the times, as any smart hospitality service would, reflected this in their menus. Meals of up nine courses are not unusual, at least for the first class passengers, consisting of a richness "that today's four-star restaurants would have trouble duplicating" in the author's words. Given today's eating habits, the author recommends that one serve only a selection of the historic menu as these dishes require extensive preparation. Since no extant wine list for that last night exists, the author suggests some modern equivalents for what possibly was served-keeping in mind the tastes of the day, and vintages-primarily French in 1912.
In addition to the meals, the author gives a quick overview of that last evening, with snapshots of the personalities on the ship. He ties these two threads together in an appendix where he gives some ideas of throwing a Titanic dinner party.
It's often ignored, but food is an integral part of any social history. This book gives one the chance to be a "historical-reenactor"-while enjoying some amazing food.
Gorgeous coffee table book, not great recipe book.......2007-02-06
Beautiful photographs and interesting research on the Titanic's food service; definitely worth the purchase price just to read and look at. I would have liked, however, more info on where their recipes came from, what research they did to figure out the recipes (they admit that they just guessed on some of them), and notes on what worked and what didn't when they tried cooking. And, most importantly, the book lacks photos of the finished dishes, so if you don't know what aspic should look like, you're out of luck.
Excellent Recipes and Dining Guide.......2007-02-02
We ordered this book prior to hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner Party with a "Titanic" theme. We read this book from cover to cover and used it as a guide for the party. We had a great time. Guests wore Edwardian Era clothing, the table was set according to the instructions in the book, and, the recipes turned out great. We modified the First Class Menu to eliminate a few courses. If you want to attempt a dinner party of this type, this book is an absolute must! Well worth the price.

This is one of the BEST books on the Titanic. If you want to have a party to remember, get this book and follow it for your dinner plans. There are great stories, pictures, recipes and more wonderful information about the "ship of dreams". This book was used as a basis for our own Titanc party and it was one of the biggest successes we ever attempted for a large group of 25. People are still talking about what fun they had becoming a passenger and reading about their characters. Buy this book and create your own Titanic Party! This is a great book for someone who has or is going to have a companion (as opposed to show dogs). Tells you everything you need to know in an incredibly readable style, tons of color and black and white pictures of shelties, and full of useful information. There's an interesting section comparing the British and US standards for the breed (the author is British). If someone is looking for more information on Shelties this is the book to get. The only unreadable section is the part covering important North American bloodlines, which is written by someone else, and immediately bogs down in breeder-speak. The best sheltie book I've read so far.

I've found this book to be very comprehensive, it has alot of good information on genetics, colour inheritance, especially the merle gene (which I've been able to do little research on outside this book) I think it's definitely worth the money.

background information on the sheltie, updated from his
original 1974 book. If you are interested in the history
of the sheltie, or love stats, etc. you might enjoy this

I found this to be a good starter book for someone interested in purchasing a Sheltie, or a new owner of a Sheltie. There is good general dog information here, such as housing and supply requirements, general dog care and training, and nutrition. It also describes illnesses and diseases to which Shelties are prone,a brief breed history, and contains color photos. However, I was disappointed that it did not contain more specific breed information, such as examples of the different coat colors, or discuss typical behavior problems such as nuisance barking. This book is a good value, and a good place to start and good general reference, but I would suggest the book "Sheltie Talk", or searching some of the Sheltie web sites available if you are seeking more specific information on this breed.

This is not as thorough a guide on the specific breed, neither to the one really looking at getting into showing, breeding, etc.
However, we found it a great little book to start with, and I think many others contemplating or getting a sheltie (we got two) will find this to be a valuable little resource.

The author of this book tells a lot about this breed and where it came from. It tells how to groom your dog, train it, feed it, what kinds of toys and other important things are the best quality, and a lot more. This book also, tells you everything you want to know before buying a sheltie. A lot of people ask themselfs questions like, "Should I buy a female or a male?", or "Should I buy a puppy or an adult?", well this book will help you answering these questions for sure. I think this book is really worth the money it costs, that's why I gave it 5 stars.

I bought this book along with another (A Happy Healthy Pet Shetland Sheepdog) and found the latter to be much more Sheltie focused with better pictures and more breed specific information.

A very thin book which does give you the basics about shelties, but much of the book seems devoted to general dog care, instead of more detailed sheltie-specific information. If you want a really good basic breed book go for The Complete Shetland Sheepdog by Margaret Norman. It's more expensive, but worth it (more photos, more readable, more detail about every aspect of the breed).

Great Book- but it's missing something!.......2000-07-14
I am just getting back into collecting Madame Alexander dolls. I have been collecting Barbie for the last 10 years and had a MA collection which I sold about 2 years ago. I think this is a great book with an extensive list of dolls. The only thing keeping it from getting 5 Stars is that there are not that many style numbers. For instance, there are so many Spain & Mexico dolls, I can't really tell which I have, by looking at this book. Maybe the next book, he'll list style numbers. Otherwise, I think it's great.

Patrice Gaines-an amazing woman who has gone through almost everything you could think of. Laughing in the Dark is an amazing autobiography. I would recommend this book to anyone that is going through trouble in life; this book is could give them a better understanding of what they are going through because people can't see what is happening to themselves, but when they see another person going through they can understand it better. Not only do I recommend it to those with troubled lives but anyone that likes to read what is going on in the world with someone besides themselves. This book is amazing and I could read it over and over again and not get sick of it. So read it.

"Laughing in the Dark" is the Black female side of Nathan McCall's "Makes Me Wanna Holler." Both works share the stories of young African people growing up with harsh realities and obstalces. Both books are about "how I overcame," and what it takes to endure the hardships of life.
Ms. Gaines's book though is rare, for we don't have nearly enough coming-of-age books by African women. The focus is mainly on the plight of African men.
Though "Laughing in the Dark" is somewhat depressing, it serves to remind us of those Black women who are not "waiting to exhale" and can't get their groove on because they don't have the privileges to do so. They must find strength in themselves where there might not be very much strength.
I hope more books like Gaines will be written. I'm sure there are many more sistahs out there with similiar stories to tell.

Another great piece of work about a woman overcoming the hardships of life and low self esteem. I would recommend this to anyone trying to understand 'why me' in order for them to see that they are not alone, things aren't as bad as they seem, and that change is coming.
