Best-selling author Michael Connelly, whose character-driven literary mysteries have earned him a wide following, breaks from the gate in the over-crowded field of legal thrillers and leaves every other contender from Grisham to Turow in the dust with this tightly plotted, brilliantly paced, impossible-to-put-down novel.

Criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller's father was a legendary lawyer whose clients included gangster Mickey Cohen (in a nice twist, Cohen's gun, given to Dad then bequeathed to his son, plays a key role in the plot). But Dad also passed on an important piece of advice that's especially relevant when Mickey takes the case of a wealthy Los Angeles realtor accused of attempted murder: "The scariest client a lawyer will ever have is an innocent client. Because if you [screw] up and he goes to prison, it'll scar you for life."

Louis Roulet, Mickey's "franchise client" (so-called becaue he's able and willing to pay whatever his defense costs) seems to be the one his father warned him against, as well as being a few rungs higher on the socio-economic ladder than the drug dealers, homeboys, and motorcycle thugs who comprise Mickey's regular case load. But as the holes in Roulet's story tear Mickey's theory of the case to shreds, his thoughts turn more to Jesus Menendez, a former client convicted of a similar crime who's now languishing in San Quentin. Connelly tellingly delineates the code of legal ethics Mickey lives by: "It didn't matter...whether the defendant 'did it' or not. What mattered was the evidence against him--the proof--and if and how it could be neutralized. My job was to bury the proof, to color the proof a shade of gray. Gray was the color of reasonable doubt." But by the time his client goes to trial, Mickey's feeling a few very reasonable doubts of his own.

While Mickey's courtroom pyrotechnics dazzle, his behind-the-scenes machinations and manipulations are even more incendiary in this taut, gripping novel, which showcases all of Connelly's literary gifts. There's not an excess sentence or padded paragraph in it--what there is, happily, is a character who, like Harry Bosch, deserves a franchise series of his own. --Jane Adams

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2007-09-18

This book was EXCELLENT. It kept me interested from beginning to end; you will not want to put it down. All the characters played excellent roles in the book; you know exactly what their purpose is for without any confusion. This is my 1st Michael Connelly book, and I am so impressed that I will continue to read more of his books. The twist, suspense, everything keeps you wanting to read more.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Legal Thriller.......2007-08-22

This was my first Michael Connelly book to read and I was very impressed. The first half of the book starts out a little slow building the facts of the case, but the second half of the book is where all the twists are. The book definitely gives you insight into criminal defense strategy and how the "system" works.

Definitely an entertaining read. I would highly recommend this book. I reserve 5 stars for only the most outstanding books.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still pretty good.......2007-08-03

I've enjoyed Michael Connelly since he wrote the early Harry Bosch stuff, Black Echo and Black Ice and so forth. I especially like some of the later Bosch books, and The Poet and Blood Work are among my favorite detective novels of the last 20 years or so. Sometimes I think his off-Bosch stuff only sort of works (Void Moon was only OK, Chasing the dime more mediocre) but generally I'm happy with one of his books. The Lincoln Lawyer falls into this category, not as bad as Chasing the Dime, probably about on the level of Void Moon and maybe a bit above it.

So the main character here is a bit different, and so is the plot. In this case we have Mickey Haller, a somewhat sleazy lawyer (what they used to call an ambulance chaser). He bought four Lincoln town cars so he could get the fleet rate, and uses them until they have 60,000 miles on them, then sells them to a friend. He has a driver, a former client who's working off his fee by driving for Haller, and his "case manager" is an ex-wife. The other ex is a prosecutor.

So we start the book and he's called to defend a Beverly Hills real estate salesman who's something of a playboy, and who's been accused of attempted rape. Haller is desperate for the case, thinking that it will be a "franchise", a case that goes on for a long time and will result in large fees for him. When things go wrong and someone close to Haller is killed in the course of the investigation, he has to figure a lawyer's way out of the predicament he's gotten himself into. The result is amusing, to say the least.

As I said, I enjoy Michael Connelly a lot, and while this isn't a Bosch book, it's pretty good, and fun. I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Brand new model Perry Mason, factory equipped with a/c, ex-wives and angst.......2007-06-21

I have just skimmed through the previous 250(!) Amazon reviews. The great majority of them are extremely well-disposed toward this book--as am I--and most more than adequately set out both the main characters and the mainspring of the plot. I see no reason to repeat any of that in this 251st kick at the can.

It did, however, strike me as worth observing that as this is a book about a lawyer and as many of its scenes take place in a courtroom, the reviewers have made references to and comparisons with the works of contemporary literary legal eagles, such as John Grisham. No reviewer, so far as I noticed, seems to have hit on what appears to me to be a far more obvious model.

Throughout the book, author Michael Connelly follows normal current practice by allowing us to know the thoughts, plans, schemes, frustrations and short-comings of his lawyer hero, Mickey Haller. If, however, a reader subtracts Connelly's internalized dialogue and commentary from the book--thus cutting its length by half and increasing its narrative speed exponentially, "The Lincoln Lawyer" is transformed into a latter day Perry Mason novel. The very same core characters are there, albeit under different names: a dazzling, if sometimes taciturn master of courtroom wizardry; an adoring secretary/assistant, Mason's Della Street; an adversarial police investigator, Mason's Lieutenant Tragg; an on-call private detective, whose name in the Mason books eludes me for the moment; and most especially, a foredoomed but ever-game DA, Mason's Hamilton Burger. The relationships of the characters in Connelly's tale are virtually identical with those of Perry Mason's merry band.

Erle Stanley Gardner was utterly indifferent to such narrative go-slow zones as back-stories or internalized agonizing. He told us nothing about Mason's personal life, save that there was SOMETHING going on between him and Della Street and that for some reason he could not or would not formalize the relationship. We never heard of Mason's doubts or of his insecurities, nor were we shown his lapses from probity or other failings. Gardner quite intentionally showed us no more than Perry Mason's game face.

Here, in Michael Connelly's book, his lawyer's game face is so similar to Mason's that he might have bought it at the sale of the old-time mouthpiece's estate.

Now, before someone rises up to pounce, I admit that there are certainly differences between the books about the two lawyers. Connelly's characters, for example, pointedly lack the near-immunity from physical harm possessed by the continuing denizens of the Mason stories. Nevertheless, I maintain that the overall similarities are far greater than the differences.

I look forward to future battles between Connelly's updated, Mason-like defense attorney, Haller, and that ADA whose nose he figuratively bloodied in this book. (And maybe next time, Haller will even be able to convince a villain to confess on the witness stand!)

Four stars.

I always love a good thriller, mystery, lawyer "story" where the end really does surprise me. I thought this was a great read and I would also pick up more Haller stories.

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book........2000-06-28

Be careful as you read to avoid associations with Roger Zelazny's Amber Chronicles, with which it shares many elements: multiple universes, a larger-than-life family full of political intrigue, powerful magic, first-person viewpoint. But unlike Zelazny's Corwin, Willey's hero is young, inexperienced, and uncertain of his place in the Grand Scheme of Things. He makes mistakes, steps on toes, and -- most endearing -- loves his mother.

Before you conclude that this all milquetoast and romance, I should point out the rollocking adventure, powerful magic, and especially the sense of mystery that pervades the book.

Hopefully, this will come back into print. It's one of my favorites, and I hate to think of what will happen when my well-thumbed copy disintergrates.

    5 out of 5 stars A Well Rounded Book.......2000-02-22

Often fantasy books are full of fighting and blood, with very little character development. This book had some excellent scenes of conflict, but it also made you see the characters as people with needs, hopes, and ulterior motives. Even the hero is not always wonderful. Instead he ends up being one of the most likeable, human, and noble individuals I have ever encountered between the pages of a book. This might just be my favorite book of all time.

      Book Description

Even light-years from the Klingon Empire, the Day of Honor remains an occasion of great importance. And sometimes honor is found in the most unexpected places...

B'Elanna Torres has never cared for the Day of Honor. Ashamed of her Klingon heritage, she regards the holiday as an unwanted reminder of all she has struggled to repress. Besides, something awful always seems to happen to her then.

Her bad luck seems to be running true to form when she and Harry Kim are captured by alien slavers. Imprisoned by the enigmatic Risatti, force to mine for deadly radioactive ore, Torres will need all of her strength and cunning to survive -- and her honor as well.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Quite good........2004-08-18

An excellent look into the character of B'Elanna Torres and her conflicting emotions regarding her half-Klingon nature. The characters other than B'Elanna were handled well also, and the plot, while not in itself memorable, was competently handled and was a good vehicle for the character study. The writing, as usual for Mr. Friedman, was smooth and unobtrusive.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek Voyager: Her Klinon Soul(Day of Honor No.3).......2002-11-19

This book is my favorite Voyager book. It is action packed and full of suspence, with every turn of the page there is a nother twist thrown at you! This book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last page! The author did a super job. I highly recomend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Gagh it ain't..........2002-04-24

This book has it's entertaining moments - mostly, they're confined to the 1st and 2nd chapter, where B'Elanna has to endure the Day of Honor good wishes of her colleagues.

What disappoints about this book is how poor the characterisations are - they feel off. Janeway definitely comes across as a bit inept and rather silly, Tom Paris comes in at the start and end (this is pre their relationship days I guess) although B'Elanna is about 60% there in terms of her portrayal. What's missing is the spark, that extra juice that makes Torres such a cool character.

The plot is okay only and the Day of Honour feels more like a calender coincidence than a real plot driver or revealing of any true character. B'Elanna's discomfort about Day of Honour is confined to how her previous DOH seem to have been like bad luck days for her.

For a better effort at B'Elanna having a bad day, the Voyager Episode 'Juggernaut' works.

5 out of 5 stars This is why I love B'Elanna........2002-03-12

While I agree that this book was probably not the soul searching story it was proclaimed to be, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The interaction between B'Elanna and Harry was wonderful all the way through. Their friendship has always been one of my favorite aspects of the show, and I think it was never given the attention it deserved. That's not the case in this book. They behave as the close friends they seemed destined to be after Caretaker.

I also really enjoyed the way Torres was portrayed in this book. She was courageous, formidable, and still very feminine. Those are the qualities that drew me to her in the first place. (Compounded by Roxann Dawson's outstanding acting.)

Perhaps it should have been a stand alone book, and not part of the Day of Honor series, but it was well written and memorable regardless. If you like B'Elanna Torres, you'll enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars This Book is a Misnomer.......2000-06-09

When I bought this book, I was looking forward to a tale focusing on B'Elanna Torres and an explanation of her conflicted emotions and past. I was disappointed. The first few chapters discussed the Day of Honor, but once they land on the planet it is forgotten and the story becomes a typical episode of the show! In fact, the show handled Day of Honor better in its episode dedicated to the topic! There were scenes that stood out in my mind. Torres holding her own and earning the respect of her fellow prisoners then leading them on a grand escape was worth the buy and well-written. I also liked seeing Torres and Kim together. Their friendship is rarely explored in these books. The plot was interesting and the characters had potential. I think this book is good, but it should stand on its own and not be part of the Day of Honor series.

Kafka believes in "hot ovens, short roasting times, and rare meat," so most recipes in this cookbook start with "heat oven to 500x F." The result is food with profound flavors that is sensible, even primal, yet has the flair you'd expect from an opinionated pro. Despite controversy over her recipe for roast turkey, this book so impressed her peers that they voted it a Julia Child Cookbook Award in 1995. Herbivores rejoice: There are over 100 mouth-watering recipes for vegetables and some fruits, too, along with those for roasted meats, poultry and fish.

            Book Description

            When you're hungry, roast.
When you're in a rush, roast.
            When you're in doubt, roast.
            When you're entertaining, roast.

Crank up the oven and throw in a chicken; roasting is simply the easiest and best way to concentrate and deepen flavor, to seal in succulence, and make robust, crusty, and sweet all kinds of meats, birds, fish, fruits, and vegetables. Roasting offers more flavor on its own than any other cooking technique. Everything you need for a lifetime of happy roasting can be found here in the pages of Barbara Kafka's ground-breaking new book. Even baby goat, a suckling pig, and loin of buffalo make it into this bible of roasting.

Roasting is absolutely essential, whether you're planning to roast a potato or leg of lamb, a turkey or a tomato, a pepper or a red snapper. Barbara's fussless high-temperature method caramelizes the surface of meat, the skin of birds or fish, or the outside of vegetables, transforming them into such savory sweet dishes as Roast Chicken with Pomegranate Glaze and Fresh Mint, aromatic Garlic Roast Pork Loin, moist and sweet Roasted Striped Bass with Fennel, and Whole Roasted Peaches with Ginger Syrup.

Nearly one hundred stellar recipes for roasted vegetables attest to the fact that Barbara Kafka's new book is not for meat eaters alone. The recipes for roasted vegetables begin where other books leave off. Try the Roasted Sliced Fennel Bulb and the Roasted Chinese Eggplant with Balsamic Marinade, the Roasted Portobello Mushrooms with Garlic Marinade, and more.

Roasting is packed with indispensable tips, techniques, and innovative cooking ideas. There are great recipes for marinades, salsas, vinaigrettes, and stuffings. You'll also find an inspiring assortment of simple but original recipes for sauces that will lift your everyday roasts into perfect party fare. You'll discover, too, the many joys of "companion roasting," learning when to add the carrots or the onions so they don't over- or undercook, and guaranteeing everything comes out at the same time.

Never a believer in unnecessary work, Barbara Kafka is a cook's best friend. Barbara never follows; she blazes new trails, challenging the sacred rules of roasting by never trussing a chicken or basting a turkey. She proves you can actually walk away from your oven and enjoy your food and your guests. It's all so quick and easy, most dishes don't need to go into the oven until your guests walk in the door.

Often the best part of the roast is the leftovers, and Roasting is overflowing with possibilities. In Barbara's knowing hands leftover onions become a smoky-flavored Roasted Onion Soup with Cannellini Beans; last night's roasted cod and boiled potatoes are transformed into a scrumptious Best Cod Hash; a deeply flavored Roast Duck Pasta Sauce is a rich reward to the cook for having made last night's duck dinner. Nearly one hundred recipes for leftovers show you how to build them into new meals of soups, salads, pasta sauces, hashes, fritters, fish cakes, and more.

Replete with all the tables, timing charts, and the encyclopedic wisdom that are hallmarks of every Barbara Kafka book, Roasting: A Simple Art is a dream of a cookbook, one that will soon bear the soils, stains, and well-worn pages of constant and creative use.

            3 out of 5 stars You had better have a self-cleaning oven.......2006-08-20

Don't buy this book unless you have a self-cleaning oven. The recipes are good, the method produces juicy rare meat, and I've always liked Kafka's opinionated palate. But unless you enjoy cleaning your oven wait until you hire a maid or have a self-cleaning method to rid yourself of the cooked on spatters from this method of roasting. I had a new clean oven, good thermostat, and followed her methods to the letter. I produced juicy meat with crisp skin (chicken) in record time. But the entire oven needs cleaning after each roast. Not fun. If your grill will crank up to 500 and hold that heat for an hour you might be able to make these recipes. Otherwise think twice if you have an ordinary oven. The pan sizes given for various roasts also seem pretty small and tend to drip the fat all over the oven floor.

5 out of 5 stars Besides the oven............2006-02-02

Great book. For roasting we use our large fireplace insert, during the winter months only, of course. It works great as the inside temp must be something akin to 500 degrees!? With energy prices so high why not use it if you have it. Works great for baking also, but you have to experiment and you have to have a large fireplace insert. Get the fire going good. Let a bed of coals develop. Use a small grate to elevate the cooking pan. Your great great grandma probably cooked like this!
We also have a Traeger smoker which automatically feeds pellets of the chosen wood into a firebox. It has a thermometer and can maintain a set temp up to about 460 in the winter months. You do NOT use this inside the house. Roasted or baked with a hint of smoke flavor....yum! Heck, we even do "take and bake" or homemade pizza on this guy using a pizza stone!
Anyway, this is a useful book. Remember, cooking is as much art as science and be creative!

4 out of 5 stars Changing the Way we Roast.......2005-09-22

Perhaps once in a decade there is a book which changes the way we think about cooking. Julia Child's introduction to French cooking did this in the 1960's and started culinary revolution in the United States that still rages. This book's influence may not be quite so profound, but it will forever change the way we think about roasting meats and vegetables. Or at least it ought to do so.

Kafka's implicit thesis is that it is the browning of meat and vegetables that imbues each with the rich 'meaty' flavor we love dearly. Most recipes for roasted meats fail to get the surface temperature high enough to cause browning. This means that almost every recipe for roasting chunks of meat at 350 F cheats both chef and diner. The solution to the problem is to crank up the temperature.

In my own oven, following Kafka's instructions will inevitably set off six smoke detectors, fog the house in thick smoke, and dispatch the local fire company. This is not how I wish to spend my mealtimes; for there is never enough food in the oven to feed them all. So I have adapted one or two recipes from this book. And in any month I will treat myself several times to a perfectly roasted chicken using one of these. (Click on my profile to reach the website that will soon have my favorite poultry recipes adapted from this book.)

Do not be put off by the fire alarm problems. Buy the book and try cooking at 425F or 450F instead of 500F. Make sure the bottom of the pan onto which the drippings fall is kept moist by covering it with vegetables of one kind or another during the entirety of the cooking process and that these same vegetables or a rack holds the meat out of the liquid. Do all these things and roasting will become a painless, economical and delicious way to prepare a meal. You will never look back.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable helper in the kitchen.......2004-12-17

I am a self-taught cook and have learned mostly from reading cookbooks and being a quick study of my mistakes. Until I first checked this out of the library, I was never truly comfortable roasting meat. I loved this book so much that I renewed it until the library wouldn't let me renew it any longer. So I bought one on Amazon marketplace and 2 years later I still find it invaluable. Who knew you could have a perfectly, golden roasted chicken in less than an hour? And the recipe for Roast Duck--wow is that great! I'd roasted duck only once before and the amount of fat was so overwhelming I never tried it again until I got this book. We're happy duck eaters now! I love the recipes and ideas for how to handle leftover roasts.

Once I became comfortable with her high heat method of roasting, I've been able to transfer those skills to my gas grill and roast food, previously roasting was never done in the summer. Please note, the book does NOT have grilling instructions, but if you are comfortable cooking on a grill; if your grill has a thermometer so you know it's temperature; and you have common sense, you will be able to figure it out.

I've learned so much and really increased my skills and knowledge base. I recommend it to everyone!

            3 out of 5 stars Roasting - A pleasure best shared............2003-10-07

There is nothing that compares to the simple visceral joy of a lovely roasting. Whether sharing with friends or colleagues there's nothing I like better, which is why I was so excited upon buying this book.

The variety and scale of techniques instructed in this book is really staggering and I feel far more competent in this simple art. I feel genuinely empowered to roast these days and it's all thanks to this book. The Double Stuffed Grosvenor Chicken is so good, it's criminal!!

              Book Description

Every year, millions of dogs are abandoned—at animal shelters, racetracks, or on the side of the road. Many of these animals end their days without ever knowing a caring human hand, but some are fortunate enough to be found and given a second chance. And these dogs, often rescued from death’s door, seem to have even more than the usual canine capacity for love and loyalty. Found Dogs is full of wonderful photos and words by people who have adopted dogs in myriad ways. Celebrities from Peter Mayle, Jamie Lee Curtis, Al Gore, and Bobby Short to everyday heroes who have found dogs--from purebreds to scruffy mix-breeds--that have become service dogs, protectors, and friends, offering solace, aid, companionship, and inspiration.

Found Dogs is a moving tribute to the power of love between people and dogs--how that love has transformed dogs who were lost, and the people who were lucky enough to find them.

I loved this book so much.I recently adopted a dog after many years of only pedigree versions. I will always save a life and adopt from now on! My other 3 dogs with papers aren't so sure of this decision!

As a dog lover and a current owner of 4 dogs (2 of whom were rescues) I applaud each and every pet owner in this book and I thank Elise Lufkin for putting these stories together so that they may be enjoyed by the people who rescue any animal or is thinking about rescuing. The joy and love these pets bring into a home is unbelievable.

As the mama of an adopted stray dog from the ASPCA I am very interested in saved cats and dogs,(I have also taken in a stray cat). To me rescued animals are the best pets. The books that I have read are all happy books, there may be a lot of saddness in them, but for the most part they have a happy ending.
Amazon is full of books on cats and dogs, the selection can't be beat!

4 out of 5 stars Found Dogs hits the mark.......2007-01-25

Whereas many tales of homeless pets end with less than stellar results, this book and its companion book, Second Chances: More tales of Found Dogs, concentrates on the happy endings of many pets who found loving homes. The book is beautifully done with pictures illustrating the joy of having adopted a loving pet.

What a heartwarming book! Beautiful pictures and wonderful stories!! This book would be great for anyone and everyone.

                        Book Description

Life in Today's world is set at a frenzied pace. Everything has to be done faster and better than before and there is little time to sit back and enjoy the frivolous things in life. However, there are some places that still put value on simple pleasures such as enjoying a sunset or having a pleasant conversation with a neighbor. In a remote area of South Carolina known as St. Helena Island there is a community that had lasted for over one humdred and fifty years and is just as popular today as it was when it first began.

Pierre McGowan describes the friendly confines of St. Helena in The Gullah Mailman. Beginning with a detailed description of the island's history and physical topography, McGowan then launches into the biographical account of his father Sam McGowan's life. Sam left a promising social life in Charleston to become a mail carrier at this isolated community predominately inhabited by five thousand Gullah-speaking African-Americans. Over the years, Sam would become a trusted and respected friend to all the island's residents and their stories become his story in the impressive memoir.

Like his father pierre has also spent most of his life in St.Helena. His love for the community is evident in the special care he takes when describing the landscapes and the individual stories of the people that held such an invaluable place in his father's heart. The Gullah Mailman is a refreshing look at a life almost forgotten in today's hectic society and a reminder of the importance of community and family.

Having grown up in the Bahamas, and then later visiting the Sea Islands off the coasts of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, I marvelled at the similarity of the spoken dialect. The intact African culture on Daufuskie and St. Helena was amazing to witness, given its proximity to the U.S. mainland via Beaufort, S.C. I have since made many friends in the area, and have watched as the local Gullah coalition has worked hard to maintain the purity and non-commercialism of their legacy.

Having said that, though, I don't honestly think that we'll have to worry about 'Gullah Mailman' being worked into the annals of classic Gullah literature. The book is so amateurishly bad that it begs gut-wrenching laughter. Non-linguist white people should not be encouraged to bastardize dialects under the guise of being quaint. [Disclaimer: I am a white person.] I could not stop laughing at his abysmal breakdown of the dialect, and had a hard time believing that the locals to whom he directed this farcical take on their language could keep a straight face either.

All in all, I'd stick with 'Legacy of Ibo Landing.'

Once you start reading this delightful book, you won't be able to put it down. Few have had the opportunity to experience life on the sea islands the way that Pierre McGowan and his father, Sam McGowan did during the period of the 30's through the 60's. Although there were certainly difficult times in many ways, both socially and economically, this book is a pleasant escape and will leave you smiling and chuckling. Great for those wishing to learn more about the sea islands and the people of the islands.
