For Steve Berry, it's a fortuitous coincidence that his third novel, a Vatican-centered conspiracy thriller titled The Third Secret, was published in the immediate aftermath of Pope Benedict XVI's anointment in Rome. While this exuberantly contrived yarn would likely have drawn an audience at any time, it benefits from coming before readers just after they've been primed with news reports about papal succession, the relative influence and legacy of pontiffs, and the increasing tug-of-war between Roman Catholic progressives and conservative traditionalists.

Set in the near future, Secret introduces Jakob Volkner--Pope Clement XV--a German "caretaker pope" who, nearing the age of 80, was elected as John Paul II's successor. But three years into his papacy, the thoughtful Clement has begun to quietly express skepticism about papal infallibility and the Church's restrictive dogma, and to make odd requests of his longtime secretary, Monsignor Colin Michener, an Irish-born but American-reared priest whose vows of celibacy have been tested--and found wanting. Clement has also made repeated visits to a guarded sanctum within the Vatican archives, where sacred and historic documents are stored. And he's dispatched Michener to Romania to locate an elderly cleric who, in the 1950s, translated three cryptic prophecies, purportedly offered by the Virgin Mary in 1917 to a trio of children in Fatima, Portugal. Those secrets have since been fully disclosed to the world. Or have they? That's the question facing Michener in the wake of Clement's shocking suicide, as he pursues a twisted trail of clues, crimes, and religious forecasts from Rome to Bosnia to Germany, accompanied by his former lover, journalist Katerina Lew. But making any additional secrets known to the world will put Michener in confrontation with doctrinal reactionaries, led by Cardinal Alberto Valendrea, the Vatican's Italian secretary of state, who's determined to follow Clement as the Vicar of Christ--even if that requires inventing a few new sins and flouting a 900-year-old prediction of doom for the next pope.

Attorney-author Berry, praised previously for The Amber Room and The Romanov Prophecy, enriches The Third Secret with glimpses behind the locked doors of a papal selection process and knowledge of centuries-old Catholic prognostications that, while employed judiciously in these pages, nonetheless suggest a prodigious amount of research. He's less successful with his casting. Valendrea is a wincingly unnuanced scoundrel, and Ms. Lew achieves scarce definition beyond being a raven-tressed temptress to powerful prelates. Thankfully, Berry does better by Michener, who finds himself at a crossroads, carrying on in Clement's name even as he searches for confirmation that his own life of devotion and service has been meaningful. Although the secrets "revealed" in this tale seem more controversial than plausible, and a potentially intriguing subplot about the excommunication of a maverick priest ends up as a throwaway device, The Third Secret builds to a conclusion that is as suspenseful and stunning as it is inevitable. Have faith. --J. Kingston Pierce

Book Description

Explosive in both its pace and its revelations, The Third Secret is a remarkable international thriller. Bestselling author Steve Berry tackles some of the most controversial ideas of our time in a breakneck journey through the history of the Church and the future of religion.

Fatima, Portugal, 1917: The Virgin Mary appears to three peasant children, sharing with them three secrets, two of which are soon revealed to the world. The third secret is sealed away in the Vatican, read only by popes, and not disclosed until the year 2000. When revealed, its quizzical tone and anticlimactic nature leave many faithful wondering if the Church has truly unveiled all of the Virgin Mary’s words–or if a message far more important has been left in the shadows.

Vatican City, present day: Papal secretary Father Colin Michener is concerned for the Pope. Night after restless night, Pope Clement XV enters the Vatican’s Riserva, the special archive open only to popes, where the Church’s most clandestine and controversial documents are stored. Though unsure of the details, Michener knows that the Pope’s distress stems from the revelations of Fatima.

Equally concerned, but not out of any sense of compassion, is Alberto Cardinal Valendrea, the Vatican’s Secretary of State,. Valendrea desperately covets the papacy, having narrowly lost out to Clement at the last conclave. Now the Pope’s interest in Fatima threatens to uncover a shocking ancient truth that Valendrea has kept to himself for many years.

When Pope Clement sends Michener to the Romanian highlands, then to a Bosnian holy site, in search of a priest–possibly one of the last people on Earth who knows Mary’s true message–a perilous set of events unfolds. Michener finds himself embroiled in murder, suspicion, suicide, deceit, and his forbidden passion for a beloved woman. In a desperate search for answers, he travels to Pope Clement’s birthplace in Germany, where he learns that the third secret of Fatima may dictate the very fate of the Church–a fate now lying in Michener’s own hands.

5 out of 5 stars Not Anti-Catholic, but Anti-Corruption.......2007-09-20

This book took me a long time to read, simply because I wanted to savor every sentence and exist in the world Steve Berry created for as long as possible.

Every part of the story worked, including the relationship--something I can usually do without. The central 'good guy' characters were courageous and principled. It was shocking, inspiring, and philosophical all in one.

Most impressive is that it highlights the beauty and importance of faith, while condemning corruption. The emphasis on truth, on challenging the rules created the heirarchy of the church to increase its own power and wealth, and asking instead what God really wants, was unlike anything I'd read in a fiction book before.

This is the best book I've read so far this year, and I've read a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Good, enjoyable read.......2007-09-16

This is the first Steve Berry book I have read and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has everything I want in a story - action, decent backstory but not so much that it slowed down the story. There were a couple of nice (if not predictable) twists and the story wrapped-up pretty well.

My only knock against this book was that some of the action/situations/occurances were WAY beyond the realm of Deus Ex Machina. However, excluding that, this was a fun read. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Sigh.......2007-09-11

I wish the Catholic bashing would stop; perhaps a way to do so would be a real 3rd secret. I finished this book just because I took it as total fantasy. If you put aside all the preconceptions about doctrine, Catholic history, etc., and are willing to just go for a ride without expecting the thing to make "Catholic sense," the book can actually be rather enjoying in its plot. Of course, the actual 3rd secret (which has been revealed by everyone reviewing the book here) is ludicrous, but entertaining if you can set aside everything else. So it's what you expect; a Steve Berry novel, which has its own universe. You should expect to get what you know you are buying from this author, nothing more.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Read.......2007-09-01

This is the second Steve Berry novel I have read, and this was certainly better than the Amber Room. The plot is intriguing and the story held my interest through the end of the novel.

The downside to this novel is that the Third Secret isn't all that shocking, and for the second straight novel, there's a five letter word to describe the personality of the lead female character. Is Berry a misogynist or was he going through a divorce while drafting these novels?

Also, the antagonists are almost cartoonish. How or why did these individuals become priests in the first place?

2 out of 5 stars Our Lady, the Progressivist.......2007-08-30

Who knew?

Who knew that what the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, really wanted to reveal to those simple shepherd children of Fatima, of La Salette, of Medjugorje, is that abortion is perfectly OK?--after all, she CHOSE to bear the son of God, thereby proving that the choice to abort or carry conceived children to term is what God really desires for women. Or, who knew that Our Lady really looks with favor on homosexual acts? These are some of the loopy revelations disclosed in this tawdry excuse for a religious thriller.

Apparently the silly season--as Fr. Richard John Neuhaus characterized that period following Vatican II which featured personages such as Matthew Fox, clown Masses, and balloon-festooned vestments--is yet with us. Despite the rout of the progressivist agenda with the pontificate of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI, some folks persist in acting as if the Catholic Church will any day now morph into a mirror image of liberal Episcopalianism.

If that's your wet dream, this is the book for you. Others will find its earnest iconoclasm initially mildly amusing but oddly anachronistic and, in the end, stupefying.

A thrilling adventure, mixed with conspiracies, intrigue, and romance; her trilogy unfolds a noble battle against unbeatable evil. I couldn't put them down! I read all 3 books in about 2 days... The story is clever and flows smoothly, the characters are complex and vivacious, and the author's message is beautiful and simple. Truly a tale that can apply to our world today. What an artist! I want more! :)

        5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed Tremendously!.......2006-03-30

Have read tons of fantasy and science fiction (Hobbs, Le Guin, Tolkien, Eddings, etc...) and these books are some of the best out there. A great blend of action entertainment and philosophical reverie. Loved the diverse characters. The ending leaves you wanting more. Looks like a new author - hope there is more coming! Z.M.

        5 out of 5 stars The 1st in a Timeless Series!.......2007-08-11

Simon Hawke's debut novel in his short-lived TimeWars series is top-notch entertainment from the first page to the last. What authors like Tolkien did for fantasy, Simon Hawke did for sci-fi time travel. If you've never read this series, well do yourself a favor and find them. Well worth the effort and money.

        Classic stuff!

4 out of 5 stars First in the Time Wars series.......2007-06-03

This is the first of Simon Hawke's "Time Wars" 12 books about a crack team from the "Temporal Intelligence Agency".

Kicks off a funny and well written series about a group of operatives who have to travel through time to prevent other time travellers causing damage to history.

Sometimes their opponents are rogue individual time terrorists: sometimes they come up against operatives from rival versions of history.

All 12 books in this series pay humorous homage to a great work of literature or set of historical events, or both. Most of these books go back to the time and events of a classic novel, in this case obviously, "Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott, and retell the events of that novel, usually with a humorous slant.

The books are best read in the correct sequence, as follows (I have put the name of the literary work and/or historical events associated with each book in brackets afterwards)

        1) The Ivanhoe Gambit (Ivanhoe)
        2) The Timekeeper Conspiracy (The Three Musketeers)
        3) The Pimpernel Plot (French Revolution & terror/Scarlet Pimpernel)
        4) The Zenda Vendetta (The Prisoner of Zenda)
        5) The Nautilus Sanction (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)
        6) The Kyber Connection (works of Rudyard Kipling/early life of Churchill)
        7) The Argonaut Affair (Jason and the Argonauts)
        8) The Dracula Caper (Sherlock Holmes meets Bram Stoker's Count Dracula)
        9) The Lilliput Legion (Gulliver's travels)
        10) The Hellfire Rebellion (American War of Independence/Hellfire Club)
        11) The Cleopatra Crisis (Caesar and Cleopatra)
        12) The Six-gun solution (Gunfight at the OK Corral.)

Not terribly serious but very good fun: I can recommend this series, and if you want to read it, start with this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Time Wars should go on..........2005-02-15

Simon Hawke's Time Wars series are absolutely fabulous books. I thoroughly recommend reading them. I don't know about the editions people are reporting typos in. I have the originals, and they have very few typos. I tried reading the Wizard series, but it doesn't compare to the Time Wars. Mr Hawke, won't you bring them back? You could write about Zorro, Edmund Dantes, Don Quixote, Alexander the Great, Attllla the Hun, and about a hundred others.
The Ivanhoe Gambit, The Dracula Caper, The Cleopatra Crisis, The Timekeeper Conspiracy and The Nautilus Sanction are among my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars LOTS OF FUN, LOTS OF TYPOS, BUT A GREAT READ!.......2000-07-26

I was very surprised by this book. I had never heard of the "Time Wars" series and bought it based on the recommendations I read on Amazon. I was not disappointed and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Yes, the text is rife with typos, but still I found it to be a great read and a lotta fun. If you're interested in fantasy, sci-fi, history, historical legend, and action all rolled into a fascinating (and original) time-travel story then you'll like this book. I deduct 1 star for all the typos though... they gotta put out a proofed edition.

5 out of 5 stars The Time Commandos Series in General.......2000-04-17

I have had the pleasure of reading this entire series of books, and truly enjoyed them all. What I enjoy the most about the books is the blending of history and scifi in such a seamless storyline, or the blending of two different stories into one storyline. The reserch and skill that this requires is wonderful. I would recommend these books to anyone. Hawke fans should also check out his Wizard series as well. Titles to look for are The Wizard of Whitechaple or The Wizard of Sunset Strip. These stories combine the Pendragon legend of King Arthur and Merlin set in the future. Merlin brings a new source of power to the world MAGIC. Try them, they are very entertaining.

The Tassajara Recipe Book is a great cookbook for families moving to a vegetarian diet(like mine). The recipes are delicious, simple to follow and use common ingredients available at the grocery store.

Edward Espe Brown's commentaries, descriptions and poems are thoughtful and full of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Every Single Recipe in this Book is Terrific!.......2003-10-17

Every single recipe in this book is amazing-- they are all wonderfully balanced and do not call for hard-to-find ingredients.

The collection features a good blend of exotic, gourmet, health, and American-traditional dishes (with a touch of flair, of course!) Check the index under sample pages for listings.

Instructions are straight-forward and easy to follow, however there are no pictures or diagrams to help (but for most people, the written instructions will be sufficient.) The book helps you develop a sense of intuition with cooking, sometimes the techniques are open-ended.

This is among the best and unique recipe books I have.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!!!.......2000-12-05

This is a wonderful collection of vegetarian recipes presented in an easy-to-follow format. I recently lived at Tassajara for several years, and spent much of that time on the kitchen crew. I am delighted that this new edition includes so many recipes that I forgot to copy down when I left! Vegetarian cooking in this country has graduated its early dependency on dairy and carbo-laden meals to an incredible variety of healthy and satisfying dishes. Ed's new edition keeps the best of the original Tassajara recipes and adds some of the latest community favorites to the mix. And the most important flavor of all, that of the Tassajara community, can still be savored in Ed's poems and anecdotes about Zen practice and daily living in the valley monastery which inspired this book and continues to inspire so many people today.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook by Gary A. Gallerstein [Hardcover] .......2005-10-05

This book was purchased for historical purposes only to see how far we have come in aviculture.

I caution any new pet bird owner looking for a owner's handbook on birds to buy a CURRENT book--this is very important. Spend the extra dollars for the most updated information. Many things have changed over the years.

5 out of 5 stars As the title indicates, this book is "complete". .......2005-05-06

As the title indicates, this book is "complete". Dr. Gallerstein starts off with a chapter to really make a person think about whether a pet bird would be right for you. If the answer to this is "yes", he then goes on to help you decide which bird you should be looking for - age, size, noise level, how to pick a healthy bird, etc.

He gives a brief description of several types of birds, indicating where they live in the wild, their size, noise level, age at maturity, activity level, playfulness, destructiveness, cuddliness, talking potential, biting potential and whether they are good for first-time bird owners. He also gives the potential life span for these birds.

Dr. Gallerstein then talks about bringing your new bird home. He gives some excellent examples of the "do's and the don'ts" to help a bird owner introduce a new bird into the household. He talks about what causes stress & how to reduce stress as well as the daily care and the weekly care required for this bird and a few time saving tips to help you out.

The chapter on proper caging & furnishings provides plenty of information to help you make a decision about what is required for birds ranging from finches, canaries & budgies to the macaws. There is even a shopping list provided so that you don't forget anything when you go to the pet supply store to pick out your bird's accessories.

The nutrition chapter covers information for new bird owners as well as experienced bird owners. Dr. Gallerstein explains what should be fed to your bird as well as why so you will have a good reason to start making changes in your bird's diet, if you haven't been following this advice. This chapter ends with some wonderful recipes.

At some point, you are going to have to hold your bird and the chapter on bird restraint explains how to do this for the various sized birds. Dr. Gallerstein then moves nicely into the chapter on grooming with detailed pictures to help with his descriptions.

Safety for your bird is important & information is provided regarding young children, other pets (including other birds) and household dangers. Everyone wants a well-behaved parrot and Dr. Gallerstein leads both new & experienced parrot owners through some very informative suggestions and ideas.

The chapter titled Avian Anatomy and Physiology has extremely interesting information including colour photographs of normal and not so normal parrot droppings.

Home Physicals and Veterinary Care are both chapters that provide information for experienced pet bird owners as well as the new bird owner and should really be read more than once to help you remember all the important information in it.

Another valuable chapter is titled Medical Emergencies and it starts off with a list indicating which emergencies are life threatening, which require veterinary attention within the day & which can wait until the next day for treatment. Each of the emergencies is then discussed in more detail throughout the chapter.

This is an excellent book for both new and experienced bird owners that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars We require this book.......2004-09-21

We give this book to all our adoptive candidates, and we test them on their knowledge before they take home a bird from The Gabriel Foundation. We order cases of this book! It is the most comprehensive bird book out there. There are more in depth books on behavior, species, medicine, etc, but if you are only getting one book **which you shouldn't do- there are many great parrot books and the more you know*** this is a fine choice. The list of safe woods is invaluable.

We rescue an average of 1000 birds a year and we owe a lot of our success to Robert Stroud. We use all his methods and we average about a 12 percent loss in our birds. He is our mentor and we have proven his methods work. The national rate for losses in wild birds is 33 percent we have averaged out to 12 percent. If you don't buy and then use Stroud's methods you will loose out.

5 out of 5 stars Practical knowlege for all bird fanciers.......2000-01-18

As a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine I have found this book of both practical and historical interest. It is still considered a standard work of the diagnosis and treatment of Avian diseases. A modern bird breeder would not be at fault in following Mr. Stroud's advice. While browsing the library of a retired colleague, I found what I believe to be a first edition of Stroudt's Digest. Can anyone tell me how to confirm this? The edition I have bears the copyright date of 1943, the dedication and forward are dated 1939. Was there a printing between 1939 and 1943?

5 out of 5 stars Not just for entertainment.......1999-01-02

Mr. Stroud spent, according to the publisher's notes, 54 years in solitary confinement--All of it devoted to the study of how to identify and cure the diseases of birds. This book although written many years ago, is still a comprehensive study of the diseases, injuries, ailments and conditions of birds. There are few vetinarians who have studied bird ailments so intensively, or can give such detailed and practical information on how to identify what is wrong with them. I suspect the modern state of avian medicine owes a great debt to the work of Mr. Stroud. The text is clear and even when technical, explains the condition, symptoms, cause or suspected causes and known or possible treatments in practical terms. Mr. Stroud's book was written when there were few avian veterinarians available to help bird breeders and owners. That problem persists to this day. The information provided covers the entire range, from the mundane to the exotic. I would not be surprized to learn that Mr. Stroud's techniques, discoveries and research are the backbone of all modern avian medicine and avian veterinary curriculum. The book also provides detailed vitamin requirement analysis and food sources as well as descriptions of vitamin deficiency ailments. It is amazing that so much information is packed into one book. I have seen nothing in any owner handbooks that I did not find in Mr. Stroud's book with more detail and clarity. As any bird owner who has had a sick bird knows, birds can progress from barely noticable illness to death while searching for a vet who knows anything about avian medicine at all. Mr. Stroud's book should be perused by all bird owners. And if one proceeds with caution regarding the suggested medications of Mr. Stroud which may be outdated or have better alternatives available in this modern day, this book can still provide health giving and life-saving information that one can apply while one is waiting for the vet to call back.

5 out of 5 stars Birdman of Alcatraz.......1998-09-07

This is the book written by the famous "Birdman of Alcatraz", a convicted 2-time murderer in Alcatraz who kept pet birds and treated their injurries. This is a large and elaborate book on bird diseases. It looks quite technical, but I am not a veterinarian and cannot offer any comments on its technical validity. The book is an absolute classic and a must-have for any collection of bird books. Stroud has been dead since 1963, so I see no reason to hesitate to buy the book just because the author was a murderer.

5 out of 5 stars Collector Plates Guide.......2002-02-26

This book is one of the few out there that is of any value in regards to Collector Plates. Although it doesn't always give you an indication on todays current price, it does tell you what the issue prices was, and gives a guideline as to whether the plate is now worth more than what was paid for it, the same, or less. I deal in Collector Plates personally and as a business, and I do use the book as a reference tool pretty often. I do recommend this book as a general guideline to those interested in collecting or selling plates.

This book is a great reference for plate collectors. Although an update is probably due, the book still offers information that holds in today's market. After pricing and selling some 200 collector plates, I have found the prices in the book to be "on the mark". Don't hesitate to add this to your resource collection.

                      Book Description

Kitchens are where we cook, clean, cry, talk, laugh, break things. Hugely symbolic--as well as practical--kitchens evoke thoughts of hearth and home, family and domesticity. No wonder that people today commonly spend more money refurbishing their kitchens than any other room in the house. To get at the heart of the meaning, design and purpose of the modern kitchen, Freeman interviewed dozens of homeowners. She follows them through the process of shopping and purchasing a new kitchen, and she discusses the importance of layout, color, shape, and texture. She explores the dominant role that women play in shaping the appearance of a new kitchen as well as considers the evolution of the modern kitchen in the context of the consumer age. The first history of the kitchen, this innovative book will appeal to anyone interested in design, sociology, gender studies, and cultural history.

                      Book Description

                      Film/Art

A compelling exploration of experimental video in Canada, one of the most exciting arenas for independent film and video.

Occasionally shocking, often funny, and above all genuinely experimental, this groundbreaking collection explores exciting developments in the field of Canadian video often overlooked in the United States. With critical essays on video theory and practice by senior and emerging media arts critics, theorists, and artists from the United States and Canada, Magnetic North offers an in-depth look at this vital art form.

Magnetic North includes early Canadian video art from the 1970s to the present, providing historical perspective and the basis for positioning this work in an international context. More than forty artists are represented, spanning divergent regions, eras, and genres that range from innovative documentary to conceptual art, from experimental narrative to performance video. This compendium not only illustrates an important exhibition of established and emerging Canadian video artists, but also provides new scholarship and criticism in the field of contemporary art practice.

Critical essays by Peggy Gale, Nicole Gingras, Bruce Jenkins, Victor Masayesva, and Chris Straayer create a rich context for the work and cover topics such as the history of Canadian video, voice and language, materiality and hybridity, indigenous aesthetics, and the body and performance. 2 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover.......2004-02-25

I first found this book at my college's library, and thought that it would be very entertaining and artistic. Having received it for Christmas and looked it over thoroughly, I am sorely disappointed. The book is nothing more than artsy camera shots and people who are wannabe artists. No doubt, Canadian Experimental Video is interesting, but the people writing the text for this book were writing it in an incredibly fartsy manner. Some of the excerpts from the videos are just garbage, and some don't make any sense. Not that art has to make sense, but it was fartsy. NO ONE BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video art resource.......2001-11-11

This a must-have for anyone interested in video art. Chock-full of colour video stills, featuring some of the major artists working in this medium over the past 25 years. Includes Zacharias Kunuk, Colin Campbell, Thirza Cuthand, Kate Craig, Lisa Steele, Robert Morin/Lorraine Dufour, Manon Labrecque, Cathy Sisler, and more. Good editorial introduction from Walker Arts Centre curator Jenny Lion and many fine essays and interviews, some in experimental format.

Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. are the most well known figures of the civil rights movement that emerged in Birmingham, Alabama, in the 1950s, but in Andrew M. Manis's well-documented book, the contributions of the fiery Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, founder of the Alabama Movement for Human Rights, finally come to light. Manis paints a portrait of a God-fearing (but otherwise fearless) preacher cut in the mold of rebel slave leader Nat Turner, whose lawsuits, sit-ins of train and bus stations, and defiant pulpit orations helped tear down segregation in the South. But the reverend always had a firm sense of community: "Shuttlesworth conducted his civil rights activities with his hands still tightly grasping the pastoral reins of his local church," Manis writes. "His concern for social justice was central to his 'care of souls' and prophetic proclamation." Manis also shows the reader the professional and personal costs of Shuttlesworth's activities, from the 1956 bombing of his home to the constant tension with more conservative religious leaders in a community that considered his activism dangerous. In the end, however, Shuttlesworth's deeds earned him the praise of Birmingham's citizens, the beneficiaries of his courageous campaigns for equality. A Fire You Can't Put Out is a blazing blueprint pointing the way for future generations of activists to continue the struggle. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of 1 of "The Big 3".......2007-01-05

As a student of the civil rights movement, this is a must read. The book explores the life and times of a great man who made it possible for Rev. King and others to make the changes that were made in Birmingham. Andrew Manis has written a great history book that covers not only Rev. Shuttlesworth's life but you get a sense of what people felt during this horrible time in U.S. history. You will see how Rev. Shuttlesworth had "set the table" so that Rev. King was able "serve the dinner" in Birmingham. Without Rev. Shuttleworth's persistence, President Kennedy would never be able to have said, Eugene Connor was the best thing that happened to the civil rights movement.

5 out of 5 stars Winner of the 2000 Lillian Smith Book Award.......2000-10-25

The story of Fred Shuttlesworth is a powerful, dramatic story that everyone interested in the black freedom movement should read. Manis' compelling portrayal captures the spirit and spirituality of a great unsung hero. The book has been honored by the Lillian Smith Book Award, the South's oldest literary prize, and deserves a wide reading.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful story of courage.......1999-10-30

A compelling portrait of a real unsung hero. Emerge Magazine says it well: "The greatest battles of the civil rights movement come alive in this biography of the man Martin Luther King Jr. called "one of the nation's most courage freedom fighters." Manis is to be congratulated for bringing us this powerful story.

                      5 out of 5 stars A book you can't put down.......1999-09-15

This is a real page turner of a biography--a book you can't put down. The contest between Fred Shuttlesworth and "Bull" Connor is classic, full of violence and poignancy. Manis has done the nation a service by putting his magnifying glass on Fred Shuttlesworth's heroics, and rightly explained them from the context of black religion. This book should be made into a movie!
