    Book Description

1928. The book begins: Between the town of Innsbruck and the Monastery of Wilten a large open piece of level ground was covered with tents and flagpoles; wooden galleries had been erected, and a kind of arena staked out for jousting and other chivalrous sports. There was accommodation for thousands of spectators and all was ready for their comfort and amusement. But these tents had covered the level fields of Wilten for nearly two years, waiting for the great and magnificent wedding-feast which Heinrich, Duke of Carinthia, Count of Tyrol, and King of Bohemia wished to celebrate. The brothers of the Monastery saw to it that the wind did not damage the tents, that the tilting-ground was not overgrown, and that the galleries did not fall to pieces. But still the festival was postponed; the second matrimonial project seemed to be as great a failure as the first. The citizens of Innsbruck and the monks of Wilten sniggered; the mountains looked down with indifference. The housewives of Innsbruck strolled down the fine gay canvas alleys, their children played tag over the benches, and lovers used the tents as convenient hiding-places.

5 out of 5 stars History of a Premier Fantasist.......2001-10-25

Triskell Tales takes the reader through 22 years of chapbooks written, as gifts, for family and friends each year. The poems and stories vividly illustrate de Lint's development as an author. Even the very earliest pieces display a charm and simplicity that's simply delightful, without distracting from the quality of the later work. The writer's talented wife, MaryAnn Harris, has wonderfully illustrated this album of nostalgia and magic that is a MUST for all de Lint fans and readers of quality fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars A glimps at the evolution of a writer.......2001-01-05

The new book by Charles De Lint, Triskell Tales, is a facinating look at the writings of one author over the course of 22 years. Every year Charles De Lint creates a small chapbook as a Christmas gift for family and close friends. Each chapbook holds a story or two, drawings (many by the author's wife, Mary Ann Harris), and / or poems. Triskell Tales represents 22 years of those chapbooks plus several other works. My understanding is that Mr. De Lint was hesitant to publish this collection since the early works were, well, early. I am extremely happy that Mr. De Lint made the decision to publish this book as it is amazing and inspiring to watch his evolution as a writer. As a collector of Mr. De Lint's work, I was delighted to find stories I had never seen before (especially the tales of the three Plushketeers and Sam the Monkey). It was fun to meet familiar characters and to see how they have grown over the years (Cerin Songweaver and the Oak King's daughter). And it simply blows me away that the reading of a tale can touch me deeply enough to make me cry, again, years after my first reading (Mr. Truepenny's Book Emporium and Gallery). Mr De Lint speaks to his readers at a universal level about life, love, hope and faith. The message that gets through to me is that life and love are joyous and wondrous and meant to be enjoyed and appreciated. A must for the Charles De Lint fans and others who are willing to challenge the consensual reality of our world.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Terrible Terrible.......2003-07-16

This book was probably the least researched piece of literature ever written. The author obviously had never seen an episode of Farscape in his life. The characters were so out of character that I wouldn't know I was reading about Farscape without the help of the cover, which the book didn't deserve. He didn't even use any of the Farscape-isms that make farscape so popular. He used seconds instead of the Farscape term microts for an example. I give this book two thumbs way down. I am a die hard fan of the show and this book makes a mockery of it.

1 out of 5 stars Not well researched.......2003-07-16

The author of this book obviously had never seen the show before. He did not use any of the words or phrases that made Farscape the show it is. He used the "earthling" mode for time management i.e. "second" instead of "microt" or "hour" instead of "arn". I couldn't get into the story because the way the crew was portrayed was totally out of character. I was a die hard fan of the show and this book did it no justice.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but forgettable........2002-06-24

I actually liked this book in spite of only giving it two stars which might lead you to believe otherwise.

The characterizations were alright, not outstanding. And the story itself was intriguing, although ultimately I felt the pay-off for reading it through to the end wasn't memorable. For example, some stories leaving you thinking about them for days/weeks/months...even years after you read them, this isn't one of those stories.

If you're desparate for a Farscape fix though, you'd be better off buying this than "Dark Side of The Sun".

1 out of 5 stars Ship of [Disappointment].......2002-05-29

Another [disappointing] Farscape book. I'm a big fan of the series and this book was sooo disappointing. The characters are completely off and left me wondering if the author has actually seen an episode or if he just looked a picture of the characters. The plot is uninteresting... Don't waste your time. I threw my copy [away]--couldn't even stomach selling or giving it away. I give this one star because of the cool bookcover artwork.

                3 out of 5 stars A stellar effort..........2002-04-28

                ...if not a stellar result.

The plot is rather imaginative. I did find that the characters were a little too chummy to be happening only a few episodes after "Premiere"--Aeryn, in particular, was getting along too well. It would probably have been better served to be, say, shortly before "A Human Reaction".

Also, I found the usage of new tech to be somewhat iffy. The power gems I didn't have a problem with, except the name, but "the furze" and the DRD army of Rygel's were simply pointless.

Overall, worthy of the name Farscape, but it could be improved.

my very best childhood friend gave me this book last year as a present. i loved reading it. i had never "read" a cookbook before. The author did a brilliant job of blending recipe and words of experience together. It was a very lighthearted read and I found it enjoyable to read over and over. I keep a copy in my kitchen where I can utilize the recipes, which by the way are also very unique and practial.

I'd rather dine out than in, and I hate to cook, but I like Laurie Colwin's style of writing, so I bought this book. Even Ms. Colwin admitted that she bought cookbooks just to read them, but I'm sure she tried some of the recipes as well. She described, by name, several cookbooks she had on hand, most or all out of print, and it made me wish I could read them as well. To show how cleverly she turned a phrase, I was inspired to cook something and did! I tried a recipe for bread that, when she wrote it, had me almost tasting it. Alas, said bread did not turn out as hoped. I had someone else (an experienced cook) try it as well, and it was somewhat disappointing. No big deal. I'd rather read than cook, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Culinary Essays. Great Read for Foodies.......2004-07-24

'Home Cooking' by Laurie Colwin is the kind of book that really makes you wish you could become friends with the author. Unfortunately, the author is no longer with us, so there is a lot more than the usual barrier between celebrity and mere mortal between reader and writer.

The chapters in the book are essays composed of both culinary and autobiographical material, although the book is not a memoir a la Ruth Reichl's two books. It is also not culinary criticism or exposition in the style of John Thorne. It is most similar to the kind of essays written by Elizabeth David, one of the author's heroes, and M.F.K. Fisher.

The author has the advantage of most good writers in that she has lived in interesting circumstances providing fuel for her writing. One premise for much of her culinary advice is based on the fact that for several years, she lived in a very small Greenwich Village apartment with no oven, two hot plates, no sink and a tiny refrigerator, with literally enough room to hold no more than three people at a time. Amazingly, the author was able to actually entertain in this tiny space, using the bathtub and commode as a means of washing up the dishes.

Much of the culinary advice is quirky and some is actually a bit dated, as it predates the microplane and the cheap plastic mandoline. I suspect the author may have changed some of her opinions if these tools had been available. Colwin's advice about knives is also a little dated, as she swears by carbon steel blades rather than modern stainless steel. Since there is no evidence that she sharpened her own knives, I suspect a modern Santoku knife may have changed her opinion. Even so, the essays are a testament to cooking with only the bare minimum of equipment and space.

It is not surprising that Ms. Colwin's recipes never made the 'Best of' series, as they are quirky rather than true gourmet fare. While another of Ms. Colwin's heroes is Edna Lewis, the very influential writer on Southern cooking, Ms. Colwin's recipe for Southern Fried Chicken does not follow Ms. Lewis' lead on a number of things such as an overnight buttermilk marinade. He does, however, keep to the gospel of pan frying rather than deep-frying.

Ms. Colwin's writing provides much more food for the soul than it does food for the gut. Reading this book makes one wish that Karen Duffey would have channeled her not inconsiderable talent for the simple in her book 'A Slob in the Kitchen' into a style more like Ms. Colwin's very entertaining twists on culinary matters.

                Highly recommended reading for foodies.

                4 out of 5 stars good, but...........2004-05-17

Prior to her untimely death, Laurie Colwin's insightful novels developed something of a cult following, as did her good-humored food columns for Gourmet Magazine. This book, like its predecessor Home Cooking, is a result of her lifelong passion for wonderful food, often things one wouldn't immediately think of: beets, pears, black beans, chutney. More than a cookbook, it's like a conversation with a longtime neighbor--one who can reminisce all day about the great meals she's cooked and eaten; one who sees cooking as a wonderful adventure complete with a pot of Curried Broccoli Soup at the end of the rainbow. It's for reading in bed as well as in the kitchen.

                Book Description

More Home Cooking, like its predecessor, Home Cooking, is an expression of Laurie Colwin's lifelong passion for cuisine. In this delightful mix of recipes, advice, and anecdotes, she writes about often overlooked food items such as beets, pears, black beans, and chutney. With down-to-earth charm and wit, Colwin also discusses the many pleasures and problems of cooking at home in essays such as "Desserts That Quiver," "Turkey Angst," and "Catering on One Dollar a Head." As informative as it is entertaining, More Home Cooking is a delicious treat for anyone who loves to spend time in the kitchen.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful cook book, but don't try the recipes!.......2007-01-29

I heartily agree with those previous reviewers who enjoyed curling up with "More Home Cooking" (and its prequel, "Home Cooking"). However, I have one major and one minor quibble with the book.

I am more than ready to blame the minor quibble on an overzealous editor and not on Laurie Colwin. Either way, someone decided that all food terminology that could possibly be construed as non-English should be italicized. It's surprising how distracting this is. It's one thing to see a reference to "crème brulée," (this review form does not accept italics, so I'm putting the words in quotes instead) but quite another to see constant references to "kielbasa," "pita" bread, and, surprisingly, "salsa."

The second problem can, considering that this is a cookbook, only be considered major. That is the fact that every recipe I've tried, with the exception of one, has been a total failure. Colwin was obviously an intuitive cook who never made anything the same way twice, and assumed that her readers would just know how much of what kind of spice to put in the soup and how long to cook the beans. Consider, for instance, this typical recipe, offered in all seriousness, for "Cold Yogurt Soup": "The easiest soup in the world to make...No-fat yogurt, defatted chicken stock, skinned cucumbers, a pinch of cumin, and the juice of half a lemon. There are endless variations on this theme: the addition of cooked grated beets, a teaspoon of curry, a small clove of garlic. The blender does all the work for you. The soup is put in the fridge and forgotten until dinnertime, when it is garnished with chopped parsley, chopped dill, scallions, chives, or all of them."

That's it. It's hard to imagine anyone following these proportionless instructions and coming up with something edible, unless they are also the kind of instinctive cook who doesn't really need any recipes anyway.

So, I've made up my mind that from now on, I'll just read Laurie Colwin's mouthwatering descriptions and accept the fact that I'll never actually taste these dishes. For that purpose, I highly recommend her books.

(Oh, the one exception: the wonderful Nantucket Cranberry Pie comes out perfectly every time).

5 out of 5 stars great follow up to her fist book; "home cooking".......2006-09-03

another unique and interesting cookbook that is hidden inside a great read. I read this after her first book, Home Cooking, and I felt they complimented each other very well. As in the first book; the recipies are traditional but not really used anymore, sadly enough...easy enough to make, and practical in my opinion. A very very good book to curl up with.

5 out of 5 stars Literary Comfort Food. Highly Nutritious for the Soul.......2004-07-25

'More Home Cooking' by Laurie Colwin is the kind of book that really makes you wish you could become friends with the author. Unfortunately, the author is no longer with us and I believe this volume was published posthumously, so there is a lot more than the usual barrier between celebrity and mere mortal between reader and writer.

Like the first volume, 'Home Cooking', chapters in the book are essays composed of both culinary and autobiographical material, although the book is not a memoir a la Ruth Reichl's two books. It is also not culinary criticism or exposition in the style of John Thorne. It is most similar to the kind of essays written by M.F.K. Fisher and Elizabeth David, one of the author's heroes.

In one of her essays, Ms. Colwin puts her finger on a reason for the popularity of cookbooks and cooking shows in the face of what some people claim to be the disappearance of home cooking. Reading about cooking is simply very comforting and reassuring. I find that I may not learn a whole lot from a particular Ina Garten or Paula Deen or Sara Moulton show on the Food Network, but it is certainly reassuring to watch, if even for the fourteenth time, how Ina cooks salmon so she can have it at two different meals with her guests being none the wiser regarding the doubling up on the effort.

Ms. Colwin gained this insight by reading Elizabeth David's 'Italian Food' while under the influence of a particularly acute hangover. And, her admiration of David's style is well demonstrated in the way Ms. Colwin writes recipes. There is none of the formal list of ingredients at the top with neatly laid out prep instructions so one can do their mise en place in true French brigade fashion. This is straight from Elizabeth David's spare recipe writing style done at a time when home cooks knew a lot more about cooking than they do today, or that at least is the patter among the Cassandras of modern culinary journalism.

Fortunately, Ms. Colwin's writing is less about cooking technique than it is about how we do and should think about cooking and food. It is to culinary journalism much like the editorial pages are to political journalism.

Like all very good culinary journalism such as that done by Anthony Bourdain and Michael Ruhlman, this is stuff you can read and reread on rainy March afternoons. It is doubly good in that Ms. Colwin is speaking from a quarter she knows well, the slightly atypical American housewife.

Very highly recommended culinary reading. Recipes are more for inspiration than real life cooking, unless you just love to deconstruct Elizabeth David recipes.

5 out of 5 stars In the Kitchen with Laurie.......2004-06-24

It's been many years since I've actually indulged my love for cooking. My food preparation had long been limited to two choices: (1)add Lawry's seasoning salt and bake/fry/broil, and (2)fast food. Recently, I became reacquanited with my inner chef and became obsessed with cookbooks and books about food. I came across More Home Cooking during one of my recent trips to the local bookstore. I was intrigued by the tag, "A Writer Returns to the Kitchen." (I love good writing and I love good food.) The chapter titles sounded promising: Why I Love Cookbooks; The Case of the Mysterious Flatbread; How to Cook Like an American; Turkey Angst...Plus, the book had recipes! This was clearly a writer who had more than a passing interest in food; this was a true believer. So, what of this book? It's simply wonderful. It's not a book you rush through all at once, but rather one you can carry with you and savor in those brief windows of time throughout your day: during lunch break, while waiting in a line, in the car wash...Colwin's writing is so well-done it seems effortless and comes across as a conversation with an articulate friend who loves to talk about food. She's opinionated, good-humored, and honest in her essays about the merits of certain foods, the drawbacks of others, advice about food and living, and events from her own daily life. From her chapter entitled, In Search of Latvian Bread, regarding her attempt to replicate this bread: "The results were, to my mind, mixed. An Estonian came for supper and said it tasted exactly like the bread he had had in Moscow. I was not sure that this was a compliment. A dancer friend, also at dinner, tasted it and said he liked the other bread (miche from the greenmarket) better. My husband said that it was wonderful, but that I should have added rye flour. The Estonian said this bread would keep forever. I was not sure that this was a compliment." It's these little moments about her curiosity about food, her willingness to experiment, and her genuine fondness for food and the people it nourishes that make this book one you'll read through once and then pick up every now and again, just to enjoy a chapter or two once more. Incidentally, it wasn't until I was nearly finished with this book that I read the "About the Author" paragraph on the back cover. That's when I learned that Laurie Colwin had died in 1992; I felt a flicker of sadness. I would certainly have looked forward to future "conversations" with this engaging writer.

5 out of 5 stars Great food writing by Laurie Colwin (sigh, how we miss her).......2001-07-25

Laurie Colwin was a talented writer and had a real feel for the essential qualities of great food. Though not a chef or professional cook, she used her writing skills to delve into the mysteries of what makes good food great. And she did that with some of the funniest, sharpest, best writing since M.F.K. Fisher.

Alas, Laurie died in 1992, much too young, so you have to savor every scrap of writing she left us, in essays for Gourmet Magazine, and these, in her Home Cooking volumes. Colwin wrote some novels as well, but really, her food writing is what I appreciate the most.as

Colwin's writing is opinionated and passionate: she goes into raptures over things most 7 year olds (and quite a few adults) would gag over; succotash, beets, goat's milk yogurt. Yet her sense of what makes food essentially wonderful will have even the most confirmed vegetable-a-phobe at least thinking about trying her succotash recipe or maybe even looking at a raw beetroot with calm impartiality. In case you are certain you will still shun beets and lima beans, at least read her description of how to roast a duck. It's splendid.

But I rarely if ever see pet pages in the magazines. This book is beautiful. The pet layouts are fantastic and give me lots of motivation to get cropping.

                                Book Description

Feminists have argued that the Barbie doll perpetuates unrealistic standards of feminine beauty and undermines the credibility of women. Yet, for every mother who disapproves of Barbie, there is a young daughter who adores her. Barbie has enjoyed a prosperous and important history in Western culture, but she is simply the most high-profile of a series of iconic dolls produced in the past 150 years. For the first time, this history is explored to reveal how intimately connected dolls have been to fashion and culture, from their early history right up to the present day. The prominence of haute couture in popular culture suggests that the link between fashion marketing and dolls should be an obvious one. Yet to date this connection has not been adequately interrogated. Peers' original and shrewd analysis fills a major gap in cultural studies by examining the doll's associations with concepts of femininity and fashionability.

Not only is this a very complete reference for someone interested in exploring all the options in flooring, but it has merit as an overall design reference as well. To assume this is just about floors is a mistake, there is much to be gleaned in overall design as well. It is an excellent reference. Beautifully photographed and full of innovative ideas and very thorough consideration of all aspects of floors from design to materials to installation.

                                                Book Description

In this exemplary work of scholarly synthesis the author traces the course of events from the emergence of Martin Luther King, Jr. as a national black spokesman during the Montgomery bus boycott to his radical critique of American society and foreign policy during the last years of his life. He also provides the first in-depth analysis of King's famous Letter from Birmingham Jail - a manifesto of the American civil rights movement and an eloquent defence of non-violent protest.
