As readers of Janet Evanovich's two previous books about funny, feisty, family-tied bounty hunter Stephanie Plum already know, she operates in "the burg"--a "comfy residential chunk of Trenton, New Jersey, where houses and minds are proud to be narrow and hearts are generously wide open." On this turf, Plum fights for justice and fashion points--this time in pursuit of a beloved neighborhood candystore owner who seems to be moonlighting as an anti-drug vigilante. Evanovich now lives in New Hampshire, but authentic affection for Trenton energizes her prose. Plums in paperback include One for the Money and Two for the Dough.

Stephanie Plum series.......2007-09-02
I love the Stephanie Plum series of novels. I really hate reading so I purchase them both in audio for me and paperback for houseguests and friends. I'm drawn in with the excitment and adventure of the story that Janet seems to capture in every novel. It has twists, turns, Lula, mystery, wonder, and of course two very "HOT" men! Who wouldn't want a mix of both men. :} I would recommend the "Plum" series, her "Full" series, as well as her earlier novels of mixed titles. They're all great fun and keep you as a reader at the edge of your seat waiting to see if a cars going to get blown up, who's died this week, who attends the pot roast dinner, who she sleeps with next, what will burn down next, and will she get her man (love or bounty). I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I look forward to #14 in the "Plum" series, the next "Full" novel, and the new novel Janet recently wrote with a new author being released this October. Thank you!
Not really impressed.......2007-08-14
After enjoying the first two Stephanie Plum stories, I eagerly jumped into this one. It did not meet expectations. It was just not believable. Stephanie continues to make the kinds of mistakes that you would think she would learn from by now. And while I was able to laugh at the irreverence of the earlier books, I agree with others who said this book was a bit TOO crude. I am undecided as to whether to move onto the 4th.
Grandma Mazur ... I'd like you to meet Lula!.......2007-08-09
It was a slow day in the bounty hunting business and the best that Stephanie could do was an FTA. "Uncle Mo" Bedemier, well-loved owner of the local ice cream parlour, was a "failure to appear" on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Stephanie didn't like the idea of having to chase down one of the burg's most respected citizens and the local populace, thinking the charge bogus and ill-advised in any event, certainly weren't tripping over themselves to give Stephanie a lending hand finding her man. But business is business and Stephanie is Stephanie. She leaped into the deep end of the pool and soon found herself up to her neck in murdered drug dealers, vigilantes, bible-thumping snake-charming country preachers and the porn industry. Plenty of room for fun and games in this little story!
But from the first moment a grateful reading audience read Stephanie Plum's exploits in her debut novel "One for the Money", the plot never has been the thing. "Three to Get Deadly" doesn't change a thing about that. Character development, slapstick comedy, earthy blue-collar New York dialogue and sticky wickets that would do "The Perils of Pauline" proud are what has rocketed this series to the top of the best-selling lists. No doubt about it. Janet Evanovich continues her string of successes and laugh-out-loud hilarity reigns supreme from first page to last.
Did you like Grandma Mazur in the first two books of the series? Then you'll die for Lula, former juiced hooker, newly minted office assistant and bounty hunter in training under Stephanie's dubious tutelage. She's "f"-ing amazing - funny, frolicsome, free-wheeling, full-figured, feisty, fired-up, frantic, in your face and fabulous! She's got a salty mouth and an attitude that any self-respecting trucker would be might proud of! What a piece of work.
Highly recommended.

Probbably the best of the series.......2007-08-09
Three to Get Deadly is probably the most well constructed book of the Stephanie Plum series. It's hilarious and full of colourful characters. You will love it. I recommend it for anyone over the age of 16.
Too outlandish.......2007-05-25
I thought her first novel had a few interesting twists and, despite the excessive crudeness, was entertaining. The second book seemed to get a bit too trashy. I thought I would give her one more chance in case she turned the corner. I was disappointed and will move on to another author.
In an effort to keep people amused and laughing, she opts for shock value via crude language and raunchy characters instead of creativity and true wit. Furthermore, Three to Get Deadly crosses the line in too many ways. First, she downplays pedophilia. Next, she makes a pervert likeable and almost makes you feel sorry for him. She leads you into wanting to forgive the guy when his actions are deplorable. Plus she seems to justify vigilantism and trashes God and a church. I could list a few dozen other objectionable points - not just morally, but also from the perspective of entertainment and writing skill.
I think she started off with a good plot and an interesting idea in her first book and built some interesting characters. However, she overused phrases, (if I read "damned skippy" one more time I was going to throw the book across the room) used crudeness and trashy language to keep things going instead of using literary skill, and her content and characters went down hill. Why does every new character have to be so outlandish? Because it is easier to choose shock than to think through interesting character build up.
Save your money and read something of value.

Wow, just like really good restaurant food at home.......2007-09-22
I have been looking for a cookbook or collection of recipies that would give me an authentic restaurant taste. Athough I have enjoyed recipies from Indian homecooking they didn't satisfy my restaurant craving. This book gives easy to follow recipies that yeild excellent results. MMM I've tried most of the recipies out of this book and have been surprised and delighted that they taste just like my favorite restaurant version. My only warnings: Use ghee instead of vegetable oil and note that imperial cups used in the book are different than US cups. If you have been dissapointed by other cookbooks, you will be pleasantly surprised by this one. Try the chicken sagwala yummy could't get enough.
The food wasn't so good.......2007-07-09
It wasn't terrible but it wasn't very good either. These recipes require tweaking, but are good foundations.
Not so great.......2007-07-08
I found this book to be nothing special. There is not magic secret in this book. It is not worth the money.
The best Curry book in the world - ever!.......2007-01-20
We all enjoy a good curry, which is almost impossible to find here in Las Vegas, so making your own is the only way. Friends recommended this book and my wife has made many curries, and they have all been extremely tasty and authentic. The book explains how to make a good curry in a simple and straightforward manner and lets you in on the secret of how all the restaurants produce such good results in the UK.
A little book with a lot of punch.......2007-01-17
Want to cook dishes as served by your favourite Indian restaurant down the road? Ever wondered why your curries didn't match what you bought at the local curry house? Always wondered what their secret was? Then this book is for you.
Kris tells us the secrets behind the most popular indian dishes, as served in commercial indian restaurants. This book does not teach authentic indian home cooking, but rather authentic "western" indian restaurant cooking. (While this has diverged from what is eaten by those in India, it is now regarded as a cuisine in itself). Tips and tricks include making up generic curry sauces and masalas in bulk, freezing them and then using them to prepare a range of different dishes. These tricks are used by commercial restaurants where individual care and attention for each different dish is just not practical.
I liked this book because it delivers exactly what it claims. The curries are indeed like those you will get in many indian restaurants. What I didn't like was the lack of any pictures. Also, if you are in anyway inclined to cook authentic home cooked indian food, this is not the book for you.
4 stars.

Great!.......2006-12-18
This book is great and very informative. A must have for any corn snake enthusiasts!
corn snake manual.......2005-10-24
a very well thought out book for beginers as it tells you all you need to know about keeping your snake healthy and well and to enjoy your snake
Very Specific for somebody who is slightly familiar w/ snakes.......2005-09-15
My family is in the market for a "Corn." We are actually looking to purchase one from the author of the book. It is very descriptive and detailed. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because we've never owned a snake and I think a check-list on what is recommended to buy before your snake arrives should've been included, along with how often to clean the aquarium and exactly how to clean it (just scoop out individual messes, or the whole she-bang). Anyway. It's excellent and informative and highly recommended!
Great resource for corn owners.......2004-05-14
I recently bought my first pet Corn, and picked this guide up as a reference for my new baby snake. This book is considered the bible of corn snake ownership, and for good reason. It's massively thorough, covering every topic a new snake owner needs to know about, as well as some other interesting stuff. I particularly enjoyed the section on genetics and the history of the different morphs.
My only nitpick is that the authors state a lot of their personal opinions about the value of different colors and patterns as if they're universal--they actually call dark colors "ugly" at one point, whereas I find them the most appealing. It would be better if they could remain objective, and simply present the facts.
Very Handy to Have Around!.......2004-01-24
I Bought this book the day I got my corn snake, Sayuri. It has been very handy to have around:) Most of the information can be found online for free, but it's very convenient to have all in one place at a moments notice. When I got my snakes (I also have a milk snake) they were living with no heat or light source in their own filth, and scummy nyquil caps used for "water bowls." I figured that even though I'm a beginner, I couldn't do any worse. My snakes now have CLEAN cages, CLEAN water dishes large enough for them to soak in, proper lighting and under cage heat sources, fresh clean substrate, and they are very active and (I assume) happy ^_^

Awfully vague.......2005-11-28
I bought this book with the hopes that two specific areas would be addressed. The first area was suitable substrate for snake habitats and husbandry in general. There was virtually no discussion about this topic, other than a brief mention that Europeans like to make elaborate habitats whereas Americans typically go simple. The book does address hide boxes, lighting, heating and water needs, but I really wanted to know what materials made for the best substrate. How often does it need to be cleaned/replaced? How should you go about cleaning a replaceable substrate like calcium sand, etc. Sanitation to me is one of the most important aspects of raising a confined animal and there is no discussion of it whatsoever. Secondly, I wanted to understand the feeding process a little better. After failing to induce a young Texas Rat Snake to feed in recent weeks, I wanted to be sure I understood the fine points of feeding. This book talks about different ways to induce feeding, but it doesn't offer any signs or symptoms to look for when one must consider the last resort of force feeding. Will the herp look gaunt? Will it show any other physical signs indicating starvation is fast approaching? How long is too long to go without eating? It further mentions that sometimes snakes don't eat during the winter months even in captivity. So now I'm really at a loss. This book is a very general guide best suited probably for someone who is sitting on the fence as to whether or not to own a rat snake and has yet to decide what type one is interested in purchasing. If you have already made the decision to raise a rat snake, especially if it will be your first snake, this book is not for you. Something much more specific with regards to the two topics above will be required; otherwise, you are jeopardizing the well being of the animal at worst and at best relying on your own instincts to provide a healthy environment for the snake.
Good Book.......2005-05-23
I learned a lot from this book. Alaso I tired some of the sugestions.
Not bad...........2001-09-03
I acually bought this book for the pictures, theres some real nice ones. The info is basic and great for a person wishing to learn more about them. But for someone like my self who has been keeping ratsnakes for 15 years, its a great picture book.
Cool, interesting, and very informative book........1999-05-30
This book has every bit of information pet owners are looking for. There are great colour photos, and each page has a detailed scetch. If you are studying the history of corn or rat snakes, or you just plain like snakes, this book is right for you

Yes, I think I can (Now)!.......2000-04-27
This book has a tremendous amount of information and encouragement for the quilter who has even thought about taking their skills into the marketplace. There are step-by-step instructions, interviews with commercial quilters, and lots of ideas for where and how to use your skills to start and maintain a business based on quilting. I had always wondered if I could make a go of it as a quilter for hire, and after reading this book I am indeed ready to go down the road to making a living from quilting which just happens to include my favorite past time of sewing. I will definitely be including this book on my bookshelf for reference in the days, weeks, months, and years to come!

Coyote Satan Amerika documents the infamous work of an artist who has collaborated with Burroughs, Giger, and other countercultural icons. A legally ordained priest in the Church of Satan and self-described redeemer of the swastika and desecrator of the American flag, Leyba assaults every notion of propriety and good taste in plumbing the depths of American culture. Includes essays by H. R. Giger, William S. Burroughs, Charles Gatewood, Poppy Z. Brite, and others.

Speaks loud and clear!.......2002-12-21
I didn't know what to to expect. What I got was something at once exhilirating (the written part) and disturbingly beautiful (the paintings and photos). You can't look at these pictures and not cringe at some while at the same time appreciating the painstaking (pardon the expression), and obviously loving work that went into them. The manifesto is a good read for anyone interested in Lavey's Satanism as well as revealing the artists' stance against and rejection of the consumer culture. An Apache, Satanist, and a radical artist rolled into one, the Reverand is certainly not for the squeamish.
A Close Friend and a Satanic Genius.......2001-12-16
This is a man who started creating his books with (...) raw, unapologetic rage, and a whole (...) load of creative genius. I personally have met with the author of this book, Rev. Steven Johnson Leyba and have attended his exhibitions. In no way can one easily sum up the power behind this man's words and ideas. Unspeakable? Maybe. Bold and intense? Definitely. Satanic? You bet (...).
This is a definite must read for any cynical, misanthropic, and/or Satanic individual.
As a foot note: I believed in, and was moved so much by, this man's writings that I collaborated with Rev. Steven Johnson Leyba to produce background music for his passage "I Don't Believe", contained on page 37 of this book (...)
Extremely thought provoking.......2001-08-26
This is a wonderfully wicked book. Incredibly offensive, the way I like it. Reverend Leyba is a premiere Satanic Artist. Why haven't you bought it?

In 1789 the French colony of Saint Domingue was the most profitable real estate in the world. These profits came at a price: while its sugar plantations supplied two-thirds of France's overseas trade, they also stimulated the greatest individual market for the slave trade. The slaves were brutally treated and died in great numbers, prompting a never-ending influx of new slaves.
The French Revolution sent waves all the way across the Atlantic, dividing the colony's white population in 1791. The elites remained royalist, while the bourgeoisie embraced the revolutionary ideals. The slaves seized the moment and in the confusion rebelled en masse against their owners. The Haitian Slave Revolt had begun. When it ended in 1803, Saint Domingue had become Haiti, the first independent nation in the Caribbean.
C.L.R. James tells the story of the revolt and the events leading up to it in his masterpiece, The Black Jacobins. James's personal beliefs infuse his narrative: in his preface to a 1962 edition of the book, he asserts that , when written in 1938, it was "intended to stimulate the coming emancipation of Africa." James writes passionately about the horrific lives of the slaves and of the man who rose up and led them--a semiliterate slave named François-Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture. As James notes, however, "Toussaint did not make the revolution. It was the revolution that made Toussaint."
With its appendix, "From Toussaint L'Ouverture to Fidel Castro," The Black Jacobins provides an excellent window into the Haitian Revolution and the worldwide repercussions it caused. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
A classic and impassioned account of the first revolution in the Third World.
This powerful, intensely dramatic book is the definitive account of the Haitian Revolution of 1794-1803, a revolution that began in the wake of the Bastille but became the model for the Third World liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of master toward slave was commonplace and ingeniously refined. And it is the story of a barely literate slave named Toussaint L'Ouverture, who led the black people of San Domingo in a successful struggle against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces and in the process helped form the first independent nation in the Caribbean.

Too much Marx.......2007-06-03
'The Black Jacobins', by C.L.R. James, is so sodden with Marxist cant as to be nearly useless. He can't get the story straight through all the verbiage. A far better account of Toussaint is found in Richard Gillespie's book, Papa Toussaint.
The other problem with James' book is he almost completely ignores military engagements. One can read the entire book and almost never learn of the War of the Knives. Given Toussaint's obvious military genius, this is a serious weakness. Again, Gillespie has the correct balance.
I've written a book set in modern Haiti, though it is fictional. It's entitled Naked in Haiti: A sexy morality tale about tourists, prostitutes & politicians. It's about politics & sex tourism, but mostly it is meant as entertainment.
Caribbean person's review of Black Jacobins.......2007-02-09
My interest the book was kindled by Michener's reference to it in his book 'THe Caribbean' which I only read recently.
When I would see black people holding high office in the US army I would see it as evidence of the enlightened attitude of the American society. I now know that that 'enlightenment' wast the result of a lesson taught by Haitians since the 1790's.
An excellent work which should be read by all especially Caribbean blacks!
TOUSSAINT AND THE BLACK LIBERATION STRUGGLE .......2007-01-24
The French Revolution, as all great revolutions, had effects on world politics and the struggle of other peoples whom awoken to political life in the afterglow of that event. The fight for freedom in French Santo Domingo (now Haiti, the name that I will use to avoid confusion hereafter) led by Toussaint to a point just short of independence is a prime example of that effect. Without the revolution in the metropolis it is very unlikely that at that time the struggle in Haiti could have been successful. The history of the times was replete with unsuccessful slave rebellions. Why it was successful in Haiti and how that success was accomplished, mainly under the leadership of Toussaint in its decisive phases, is the subject of the eccentric Marxist, later Pan-Africanist historian C.L.R. James. Although originally written in 1938 Black Jacobin is still the best biography of Toussaint in English.
The freedom struggle in Haiti, a tropical island well suited to intensive agricultural development for the new international market in those goods necessary for the embryonic industrial system, was above all the struggle for the abolition of slavery. The fight against that servile condition that even many revolutionaries, white and black, and former revolutionaries of the time broke their teeth on. Today that freedom struggle, successful in its way in the Haiti of the early 19th century, remains a shining example of the only really successful fight against slavery by the slaves. So it pays to pay particular attention to the fight.
The forces which pushed the French Revolution forward in the metropolis had their its own set of priorities, among them the fight to move the population from a condition of subjugation to a monarch to citizens of a democracy. I have noted elsewhere how important that changed social status was to the historical and psychological development of modern humankind. Nevertheless that same psychology applies to the struggle in Haiti although even more so under conditions of chattel slavery. Thus, the events in French had their reflection in the colonies particularly in Haiti. One can observe in France the changes in attitude and policy from the early revolutionary days when all classes were good fellows and true through the rise of the leftist Robespierre regime based on the plebian masses, its eventually overthrow and establishment of the Directory and then the various manifestations of the regimes of Napoleon. That regime and its treacherous colonial policy attempting was a very far drop down hill from the early heady days when even moderate revolutionaries were in both places prepared to go quite far to eliminate slavery in Haiti.
There is something of a truism in the statement that great revolutions throw up personalities fit for the times. Certainly revolutions shake up the traditional order of things and let some who might have stayed dormant rise to the occasion. That is the case with Toussaint. For most of his life he was a middle level functionary on his master's estate respected by not slated for greatness. Early on, as the struggle against slavery heated up among the black slaves he exhibited the military, social, political diplomatic and other skills that would eventual thrust him into the leadership of the liberation struggle, This is really saying something special about the man because in the context of that Haitian revolution with the initial disputes between British Spanish and French interests and then the conflicting interests on the island itself between white, black and mulatto would have driven a lesser man around the bend. That it did not do so and that in his errors that which at times were grievous, especially around his seemingly obsessive commitment to maintain the French connection, does not take away from the grandeur of the experience. A cursory look at the latter developments on the island and the seemingly never ending series of tin pot despots who in their turn devastated the island only brings out Toussaint's fascinating role, warts and all, in the earlier liberation struggle in broader relief.
Hermetic Scholarship.......2007-01-23
I've read a number of books on the Caribbean and was taught about the Haitian revolution in school. The latter cursorily in comparison to James's work. His analysis of race and class are concurrent as the Haitian dymanics necessitate such. One of the most salient things was the bizarreness of the social arrangements in Haiti: Great Whites, Small Whites, Mulattoes (even more stratification in this class) and Africans. Maybe the events that transpired were ineluctable. Here are these variant races and classes in the midst of an African revolution with a French Revolution correlate and interface. This political climate produced some of the most intelligent, heroic and proficient men in History: Toussaint, Dessalines, Moise, Petion and Christophe. James's work is flawless and timeless.
Good but too much marxism.......2006-12-29
This is an older account of how San Domingo became Haiti and the rode to freedom from slavery. Be warned it carries a Marxist slant throughout the whole book but once you ignore that then the story is very compelling. It is one of the best accounts of what happened on San Domingo and you get a sense for how the French Revolution influenced what was happening the Caribbean. If you are just starting out on Caribbean history this is the perfect book to start with. It shows how the cultural identity began to take shape and what happened to the French Caribbean possessions.

Book Description
This richly detailed portrait of Pierre Toussaint, who was born into slavery, became one of the most admired men of his time, and is now a candidate for canonization, reveals both the journey of an extraordinary man and a fascinating glimpse into nineteenth-century America.
Pierre Toussaint was born in Saint Domingue (now known as Haiti) in 1781. The child of a slave on a plantation owned by the Bérards, a prosperous French family, he was raised as a devout Catholic. When a slave uprising forced the Bérards to flee the island in 1797, Toussaint came to New York City as the family’s servant. As a black man and as a Catholic, Toussaint found that his new home held dangers of its own: Slaves were brutalized by their owners, free blacks were beaten on the streets, and anti-Catholic sentiment was rampant. But New York also offered him new opportunities. When Toussaint’s talents as a hairstylist—along with his charming, refined manners—made him a favorite of the women in New York’s upper-class families, he began earning a substantial income. He was given his freedom in 1807, married in 1811, and devoted his life to helping former slaves, supporting the Church, and taking care of the poor and oppressed, all while helping to raise funds for the city’s first cathedral.
In the first biography of Toussaint written for a mainstream audience, Arthur Jones charts a life buffeted and scarred by poverty, prejudice, and political upheavals, and shows how Toussaint’s faith, independence of mind, and sense of personal dignity served as lifelong sources of strength. Drawing on letters from Toussaint’s friends and admirers, black and white alike, as well as a wealth of historical sources, he brings to life a man who, by defying the strictures of a racist society became an example not only for other black people, but for oppressed and maligned immigrants of all backgrounds.

A must-read book.......2000-07-13
Ellen Tarry gives us a well-researched, detailed, yet flowing account of the life of the humble Pierre Toussaint. Ellen takes us on the journey with Pierre from being a slave in his native Haiti, to his journey to New York with the family that owned him, his career as a caring and concerned hairdresser to the elite of New York, his charitable efforts with the orphans and French Revolution victims, purchasing slaves' freedom, his caring for the dying and sick during the August plagues, and the list goes on.... Pierre Toussaint is now undergoing the canonization process for sainthood in the Catholic Church. It would certainly be a fitting crown for this humble man of great faith, humility, hope and charity. Ellen Tarry writes of this in a flowing non-boring descriptive manner. The book is also an excellent source of the history of the 1777-1853 period when he lived, not only New York history, but France and Haiti. It would be appropriate for people of all ages. Pierre Toussaint was a great inspiration and example for us all to follow.
