              4 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES.......2003-09-24

I loved this series! first of all to the nay sayers blah on you! it may be a historical rip off of cortez but thats what makes it great! second! each side has both good and bad "guys" but isn't that how real life is? I thought the story was great and the series was better than most of the dragon lance and forgotten realms books i have read, this was one of the last ones i read and now am hunting down the series to buy.

              1 out of 5 stars yes.. bad!.......2002-04-22

It's just as bad as the first book. The child skewering occurs in almost the same place (pagewise) as in the first book to show you that the good guys are actually quite bad. But never fear. They are actually the good guys because the bad guys enjoy and acknowledge their evil deeds. Confusing? This is the second book in a trilogy and trust me. Save your money and time. There are plenty of good Forgotten Realms novels out there. Don't go for this historical rip-off that can't clearly define who the bad and good guys are. They're all bad. So is the trilogy.

Gollancz's Science Fiction Collector's series, which offers the finest classics of the genre, now presents a thought-provoking and multiple award-nominated novel by acclaimed author John Varley.
After the effortless capture of Earth by vastly superior aliens, humanity is forced to fight for existence on the Moon and other lumps of airless rock. The invention of the
Hotline--a constant stream of data from a star in the constellation Ophiuchus--facilitates survival and enables the development of amazing new technologies.
Then, after 400 years, humanity's unknown helpers send a bill for their services...and suddenly everything is threatened once again.

The Ophiuchi Hotline was John Varley's first novel, and it received nominations for both the Hugo and Nebula awards; he later won both for his book Persistence of Vision.

It is nice to know this book is in reprint. Having been fasinated with the idea of cloning since I was child and having been a firm believer in it since reading this book at the tender age of 16 (along with RAH's 'Friday') I am glad to know this book is available to a new generation of Science Ficion readers. Yes, he does set up the Jovians as a sort of 'god', but I believe, based on mans history, if we had the chance we would 'over run' another planet, therefore setting ourselves up as some type of 'god'

5 out of 5 stars Bold explosion of ideas.......2004-03-17

The only other book I've read by Varley is the relatively recent Steel Beach, which I enjoyed quite a bit, especially the opening line, which I still remember fondly to this day (if you've read the book you'll know what I'm talking about, if not, crack the book open in a bookstore and you'll see what I mean). The blueprint for a lot of the stuff in that novel can be found here, at least when it comes to Varley's worldview and his interpretation of SF. He does a clever thing in this novel and puts forward a situation that has already happened long in the book's past, so that while it informs the character's present actions, the reader wasn't really there for it, it's part of history. Here, the premise is that humanity has been kicked off Earth by the super-powerful Invaders, who apparently get along real well with dolphins and whatever lives inside Jupiter. Humanity, with nowhere left to go, spreads throughout the solar system and tries to make do with the fact that the homeworld is off limits. Over the years they've been getting all their information from something called the Hotline, a laser beam of information from an unknown source that they can only translate partially, but what they can figure out has made life interesting for everyone. In this novel, the presentation is just as important as the plot and Varley pulls out all the stops to depict his wild future history, of a human culture adapted to the stars, where sex changes and physical changes are completely ordinary . . . for all the wacky stuff, he manages to make it feel real, not an easy thing to do. The plot has to do with a man named Tweed trying to figure out how to get rid of the Invaders . . . to that end he gathers various people who have been kicked out of society and tries to use them . . . sometimes cloning them when things go slightly awry. The issues of cloning and genetics are consistently impressive and well thought out, almost surreal in a sense, especially when it focuses on the slightly rebellious main character Lilo, who keeps getting cloned more often than she'd like. Meanwhile just to make things more complicated, the Hotline seems to have sent along a phone bill, and no one is quite sure what that's supposed to mean. This is a lot of story for such a slim book and Varley manages to pull it off with a lot of skill, although the ending is still rather abrupt and the plot seems to lose focus toward the end. It can also be said that the idea of humanity playing third fiddle to just about everyone is sort of depressing and certainly not the most uplifting concept, but hey, life is like that sometimes. Not everything comes up roses all the time. His people soldier on anyway, determined to live their lives, even if in the cosmic scheme of things it's utterly pointless. Not a crowd pleasing premise, but the images and ideas he puts forward are amazing, his future is just as fully realized and complex as the real world and you won't regret any of the time you invest in both finding this book (I think it's still out of print, but far from rare) and reading it.

                4 out of 5 stars A science fiction classic.......2004-01-31

John Varley for many reasons is one of the best science fiction writers of his generation and The Ophiuchi Hotline is his first major work. Unlike many writers who do setting specific books (e.g. series) Varley makes no pretense about evolving his worlds or simply writing books in worlds that are very similar to each other. This is best exemplified in the later books Steel Beach and The Golden Globe, which relate to each other closely, while The Ophiuchi Hotline shares many of the same settings and ideas.

The Ophiuchi Hotline shows off Varley's talent for writing a different kind of science fiction with a different sort of styling. If you have a used book store in your area, that is probably the best route, though this laster reprint is nice also and one edition or the the should be on your bookshelf.

                5 out of 5 stars Remarkable science fiction...remarkable book.......2003-04-03

The O Hotline is probably Varley's best single work. The Gaea trilogy is amazing in its own right, but it is, essentially, fantasy. The O Hotline is science fiction and it is done very very well.

Varley's most recent works (Golden Globe, Steel Beach) have been disappointments to me, particularly compared to this, the trilogy and his short fiction anathologies. I originally spent years looking for a copy of the O Hotline, finding it in a used bookstore. It captivated me. I didn't want it to end and when it did, I thought it clipped off a little too quickly.

Having said that, its easily a five star and it is the science fiction novel that all others will be judged against. Simply, is it as good as the O Hotline? If not, then it is a four star.

3 out of 5 stars Not so hot.......2002-10-21

I have a problem with alien invasion books like this. It based on the belief that there are aliens so are so advanced over us that to them we are just like bugs. The problem is that aliens like these are not advanced over us; they are as far below us as we are above bugs. If they were _really_ advanced they would be more moral than and not engage in all the destruction the human race is so fond of. Why aliens would behave as they do is this novel--kicking the human race off of Earth, and the few who do remain are degraded to about 10,000 BC--is something that really requires stretching the imagination. Varley _is_ an imaginative
writer--that much I'll give him. But the rest of this novel...

Response to book in a moment, but I need to vent for a second. : )

First off, I think John Varley is quite under-apprecieated as an author. I think his Gaean Trilogy is one of the best saga's ever written. (but hey, I LOVED farmer's riverworld series as well) -- maybe I just have an affinity for detailed fiction.

Reguardless, I was on my Gaean trilogy rebound when I picked up Ophiuchi Hotline. I needed some sort of quick pick me up, and boy was this it! The story is classic Varley style; heavy on genetic fancy. We delve into a futuristic solar system where humans have been forced off of earth by obscure jovians and a laser beam of mysterious extra-solar origin carrying an encrypted data-stream is pointed in the general direction of us, offering volumes of biological and technological marvels. Such a windfall of technology brings humans to a level that allows for: sex-change on demand, clones with copied minds, black hole power and plants that grow meat, etc. Then a twist; a garbeled message comes down the hotline, something that seems like a bill of service, and an un-intelligible threat.

It's page length is suprising, as I got much more story out of it then many books five times Ophiuchi Hotline's length..

In short, this is a wonderful story that I think anyone who injoys S/F would love...

The popularity of espresso, coffee at its purest and most intense, has grown exponentially in the past decade. In this revised edition of his book on the ultimate coffee, Kenneth Davids provides a lucid, engaging examination of espresso's lore, legend, and culture. A finalist for the James Beard Award upon its original publication, Espresso is the perfect introduction to the world of specialty coffee.

4 out of 5 stars Espresso - Crema of Coffee.......2007-08-13

Great book about espresso. One may wonder how a small cup half full of a black fluid with a little bit of froth on the top should be the sole subject of a whole book. After reading it is clear that espresso is more than just coffee. The book has the complete history of how espresso was invented, the history of the machines and every thing you need to know to get a good cup with the magic crema. It also describes the complete process about the bean's travel from the tree to the cup including treatment of the raw beans, roasting, grinding and brewing. It will also advise you on how to select your own equipment and that is where it is a little to limited. Kenneth Davids knows probably everything which is worth knowing about the subject but I missed some guidance to select a machine if you want to go further and invest into semi professional or professional brewing hardware.

3 out of 5 stars An Overall Decent Cup of Coffee.......2006-07-04

I found this book to have some valuable information, especially in regards to historical background on origins of the espresso machine. I must say that it did seem to be a bit outdated at times. I know the last published date was 2001, however, it felt like most of it was from the original 1993 edition. I live in Seattle now so even comments made back in 2001 are already outdated. The organization of the book is a little awkward at first and you will find some redundancy in content throughout the book (in particular information about types of machines).

If you are looking for a book heavy in skills that will help to make you a better barista, whether profession or even skilled amateur at home, you will find some good tips in this book. However, I would instead highly recommend David Schomer's book Espresso Coffee: Professional Techniques, which is regarded by many as the barista bible.

3 out of 5 stars Good information on espresso.......2002-05-16

Kenneth Davids writes a lot of information on history and the art of making espresso coffee. The only thing that really bothered me was his method of writing. At times it was very clear, then it dropped off when it became more interesting, almost like "running out of room." The section on machines and equipment was fairly good, but it didn't give more details on each type of machine.

The source section was very limited on where to buy machines or coffee. Could have been better at rating coffee and machines.
The book was a little hard to read with very small type, and the monotone brown color of the illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate Coffee? Yes. Ultimate Book? I don't think so..........2001-10-26

Ken Davids writes with his usual engaging style and authority in terms of "cuisine de caffeine" [this is, after all, one of three of his coffee guides.] The style of the book itself, however, makes this a sometimes less than coherent read. Numerous sidebars [or, espresso breaks] weave their way throughout the volume, causing the reader to page forward and back through the text in an attempt to follow the thread of the conversation.

There's good stuff here -- and frankly I wish every barista wannabe behind the counter would be required to read it. If only somebody would revoke the publisher's stylistic license....

5 out of 5 stars Espresso: Ultimate Coffee.......2001-08-08

Pretty much tells history of coffee. Provides in depth information on how to buy Espresso blends (various characteristics). Also explains the history of how Espresso was developed along with the machines that make it the joy it is. The author has a subtle humor which makes the book fun to read while teaching you about Coffee.

Biologist and author, John Tullock, shares the secrets of his more than 20 years experience in marine aquarium keeping. He shows that by mastering a few simple techniques, and paying attention to the ecology of the aquarium's inhabitants, even a novice can create a beautiful coral reef in miniature. The book's emphasis is on proper design and careful selection of saltwater species, rather than reliance on costly equipment. Paperback / 80 Pages / 6 1/2 x 7 7/8 / 1998

Wonderful book as an "introduction" to the world of starting and maintaining a salt water aquarium. It is excellent in giving anyone who is think of starting a tank the basics of set-up and more importantly, what to expect as the tank matures. My 75 gallon tank is now 4 months old and has done great right from the start in large part due to the knowledge I gained from this book.

                              4 out of 5 stars Very good beginner's guide.......2003-10-03

Strengths: Good beginners' guide, including a 30 gallon tank setup, start-to-finish. Reasonable "fish compatibility" guide.
Weaknesses: Brief; the description of fishes/invertebrates for stocking your tank is pretty short. The salinity calculation is more complex than it needs to be, and lighting advice is dated.

John Tullock advocates a setup with lots of live rock, and with a protein skimmer. This is the preferred saltwater setup nowadays, as it sets up a mini-environment for your fish. He closes the book with a walk-through of a 30 gallon "mini-reef" setup, including curing live rock yourself (if you don't live where a local fish store stocks pre-cured live rock), which also includes fish recommendations.

                              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-03-12

Once I started reading this book I couldn't stop until I was done. I have fairly good experience keeping a fresh water tank but I never had a marine one, or for that matter I never read anything about it. This was my first book on the subject and I found it to have
all necessary information to get me familiar with what is required to start a marine tank and how involved is the process of maintaining it. The step-by-step guide on who to setup a mini-reef tank is also very helpful. I also liked the explanation of different filtration systems (Berlin, Smithsonian, Monaco).
The book has more text than photos so it might appear a little bit overwhelming. But that is good because the text gives good information and is well written. Not that this book doesn't have any pictures, it does have good ones, but there are some pages that are just text.
All in all I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about starting a marine aquarium. This book will tell you if that is something you can commit to or not. And if you choose to do it, this book would definitely be valuable as a reference.

2 out of 5 stars Not a First Guide Book.......2001-10-28

I purchased this book as a "first exposure" to keeping a saltwater fish and reef tank.
It presented a bit wordy for someone unfamiliar to saltwater--and that turned me off right away. There didn't seem enough information to really get started, but too much for a beginner, if that makes sense. His other book "Natural Reef Aquariums: Simplified Approaches to Creating Living Saltwater Microcosms" (while it did have a very long introduction story) was much better in this respect (it had a Step-by-Step Starter Reef section that I think would have belonged in this book instead.) While "Your First Marine Aquarium" may look like a typical beginners book that you might take home with a tank and equipment, I don't think it covers enough slowly, basically, and simply to serve in this capacity.
Let me interject here that it is full of good pictures and has some useful reference tables.
After reading both of these books, I still don't understand the exact mechanism or technique of feeding either corals or marine fish--something I think is very basic and always simply covered in freshwater literature. If I had picked it up and looked this book over in the store, I would have put it back and bought his other book "Natural Reef Aquariums..." instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great and Simple Book.......2001-04-08

Fantastic book. It keeps things very easy and helps people like me in doing the migration from freshwater to saltwater. This is the exact book to start.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Collectors of Kitchen Items..........2000-05-06

This book is the kind that "hooks" collectors. Having recently purchased most of the kitchen collectible books readily available on the market, I was pleasantly surprised at the scope of this book and the excellent photography, along with pricing guidelines. While this book does not offer specific dating of items, an introduction suffices to lead you elsewhere for extensive research, gives you enough of a broad overview to get you started, and provides insight into the very real difficulties of accurate dating. Given the wide range of items I haven't found elsewhere, I was happy to accept what it had to offer: photos and information about everything from aluminum bowls to wire whips, from the 1920's to the 1950's. This book proves you don't have to aspire to owning a $150 Griswold cast iron pot from the 1800's to love old kitchen equipment and all that it represents!

3 out of 5 stars Great if you like potato mashers.......2000-03-30

This book has great color photos, but I found it to be less than "complete" as the title implies -- UNLESS you are collecting potato mashers! Page after page after page of potato mashers. It tries to cover too many areas and leaves me unsatisfied in most of them. And frankly, general types of potato mashers have the relatively same value -- I could have used more cake tins, crock bowls, etc. and many fewer mashers, it seemed like enormous overkill.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Heartwarming!.......2003-10-15

This book is full of great ideas, some more practical than others. Most of the chapters focus on making your home a welcoming place to guests, but there are also chapters on creating a welcoming home to the people who live there every day. I've had the book for a year, and though I can't say I've followed every idea and suggestion, I find them inspiring. Anytime I sit down with this book, even for 5 minutes, I'm always in a better mood. Very uplifting, loving, inspiring.

                                                    Book Description

Once people were instinctively tuned to the beautiful. In those distant days before the advent of the motor car and the washing machine, the electric toothbrush and the wheel, craftsmen and musicians, masons and poets, painters and dancers simply did not know how to make an ugly thing; they could not close their hearts to the light of heaven. For them--countless numbers of them--beauty was as necessary as the air they breathed. It gave dignity and meaning to drab and impoverished lives and inspired great (but often brutal) civilizations in which people lived creative and useful lives. Beauty is the nourishment of the soul. It is something that gives us dignity as a species. John Lane calls us to awaken to the possibilities of a culture that recognizes the importance of beauty and to acknowledge that we are only fully human when in contact with the beautiful.

This elegant memoir by Randall Robinson, political activist and founder/president of TransAfrica--an organization that lobbies for African and Caribbean interests that was instrumental in defeating Apartheid in South Africa--details the triumphant life of a warrior dedicated to fighting racism and shows us by his brilliant example how to carry on the fight. You can almost hear Robinson's booming, southern baritone in his forceful prose when he writes about segregation in his native Richmond, Virginia, his experiences at African American Virginia Union University and Harvard Law School, and his near-death from a 27-day fast to protest the government's anti-Haitian immigration policies. Robinson conveys a profound sense following the 1989 AIDS-related death of his brother, ABC News anchor Max Robinson: "In that final year we drew closer as a family, saying to each other the important things, leaving aside the extraneous." On the subject of race, Robinson leaves us with this warning: "Our nation's white leaders have elected, consciously or unconsciously, to ignore the deepening national racial crisis.... Better we face the painful problem now than the conflagration looming ahead." --Eugene Holley, Jr.

                                                    Book Description

Randall Robinson's Defending The Spirit is a personal account of his rise from poverty in the segregated south to a position as one of the most distinguished and outspoken political activists of our time. In 1977, Robinson founded TransAfrica, the first organization to lobby for the interests of African and Caribbean peoples. TransAfrica was instrumental in the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in South Africa and the reinstatement of President Aristide in Haiti. Robinson's thoughtful and provocative memoir paints a vivid picture of racism in the hallowed halls of Harvard, where he went to law school, as well as the corridors of power in Washington, D.C. He also recounts in fascinating detail his trips to troubled African and Caribbean nations; more than anyone else, he has raised awareness of the problems in those countries. Defending The Spirit also gives a devastating commentary on America's foreign policy endeavors in African and Caribbean nations, and an impassioned call to African-Americans for new leadership and activism to fight racism all over the world.

Dr. Randall Robinson is a valued member in the African American community, he selflessly placed his life on the line many times for the empowerment of his people, not just for African Americans but for Africans (Black people) throughout the Diaspora, this book outlines a few of those occasions. South Africa owes a debt to him an a few other African American congressmen for taking a stand and making a profound difference.

Without a doubt, had it not been for the efforts of Randall Robinson et al, I would not be surprised if South Africa would still be suffering from the ills of Apartheid today.

I'm extremely proud that I had the opportunity to buy the book, I'm extremely proud that I had the opportunity to read the book, and I'm extremely proud that his inspirational message of Black empowerment is still with me today (I quoted it just this week).

Why are all white folks racist or at the least have that one family member who is a "go to the grave" bigot ? Is it a mental illness that they(whitey) are all born with as Dr.Alvin Pouissant has suggested ?

Max Robinson was a joke as a newscaster and a disgrace as a person. His brother has kept his legacy intact.
