I've loved just about everything Greg has written. Turning Angel was another interesting and emotionally charged book by an amazingly talented author. Super characters. I think Greg is one of the best thriller writers today.

This Book Defines "Pageturner".......2007-10-03

First, Turning Angel is a real page turner, but suprisingly to me, it also has a lot of content outside of murder and mayhem. The author makes some really incisive observations about life in the South. So, why four stars rather than five ? I found the protagionist's getting away from one of the bad guys near the end of the book kind of hard to swallow.
Otherwise, great read.

Outstanding, Vivid, Page-turner.......2007-08-06

Iles blends his well-researched sense of place with a complex but highly believable plot. His characters are strong and ring true. His topic may make some uncomfortable but then, if we are not sometimes uncomfortable with what's happening in every-day life these days, we are not understanding what's happening in today's world. This may be fiction, but it provokes thought and perhaps has some worthwhile observations as well.

Usually, I don't care for first person, present tense narration, but I truly loved this book and really didn't want the story to end.

This book is mildly interesting. Its slow in certain areas and I haven't found a character that I really care about. I'll continue reading, but only during the ride to work on the Metro.

Jinian was seen in The True Game, in the third book, but only through the eyes of Peter, the son of the shapershifter Mavin.

This volume begins the second of the three trilogies that compose Sheri Tepper's epic tale of the Land of the True Game. This time we will see the tale through the eyes of Jinian of Stoneflight Demesne. Of course, we have met Jinian before. But know only what Peter discovered in the short period when he met Jinian and came to care for her. Now we come to find out that Jinian has great depths of her own. This is our introduction to her history and will bring us up-to-date, so that we are ready to join the young couple and their friends on a journey past the borders of the lands of the gamesmen.

Jinian, raised as an unwelcome child in a Talented family finds that her best and only friends are seven 'sisters' who undertake her care and education when her mother and brother give Jinian nothing but cause to fear. Murzy, Tess Tinder-my-hand, Margaret Foxmitten, Betts Battereye, Cat Candleshy, and Sarah Shadowsox. With Jinian, they make seven. From them the young girl learns the elements of Wyze-art, true magic in a world where most magic is really just the powers of the various talents that developed when humans fled to this world.

Jinian is caught in a game not of her own making, between Porvius Bloster, a Tragamoor lost in a dream, and her not so brotherly brother, Mendost the Armiger. Barely making her escape, Jinian comes to Chimmerdong forest, which will need her help when she is ready to give it. There she also meets the Flitchhawk, the Oracle, and countless others, both foe and friend. Jinian will come to attend Vorbold's House in Xammer, avoid yet another game played against her until finally she comes to take her place among the Wyze-ards. And finally, she will meet Peter for the second time and open a completely new chapter of adventures.

I hope I have managed to give the reader the impression of a complex story full of imaginative diversions. What I have yet to do is confess that Jinian is a truly marvelous character. She approaches her life with bright intensity and determination, and manages to maintain a certain whimsical philosophy. Whether she is casting spells or talking to bunwits, Jinian is an engaging narrator. In a genuinely tricksie world Jinian is a touchstone of common sense, outwitting her opponents and charming her friends.

If anything, I like this second series even better than Tepper's first. Peter has his own magic, but Tepper goes an extra mile in developing Jinian and the characters she meets. In this story both the game world and the real world meet head on, and I think the Armigers, Tragamoors, and Basilisks come out the worst for wear.

Consistent quality from the Land of the True Game.......2001-05-09

One of my greatest regrets was not buying this book in the 1980's when it was generally on sale. Years later, I've finally acquired it, and I am not disappointed.

Set in the Land of the True Game, it continues where the "True Game" trilogy left off. A fantastic and original read, I simply can't understand why these books were withdrawn from print.

Sheri S Tepper is consistently excellent with a wonderful imagination, and the plot keeps you interested throughout. I would recommend this to anyone, but make sure you can lay your hands on all 3 of the trilogy (Jinian Footseer, Dervish Daughter and Jinian Star-Eye) first!

Trickiness returns.......2000-01-31

Read the first in the trilogy of Jinian, Wizard, and her early life prior to her northward journey Silkhands and Peter to meet King Kelver. Another enjoyable tale, building upon the trilogies of Peter and of Mavin; this time reintroducing some of the trickiness and interconnectedness that make these stories so good.

_Harp_ is lovely, enchanting, sad, and very well-written. While surely not at humorous as Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles, it has very good dialog and characterization. I liked it largely because I am a harpist myself (the hero is a minstrel), so if you like music I'm sure you'll like this book. I read it twice without pause between :)

While "Harp" wasn't hard to read, it wasn't a breathtaking book, either. I've read Wrede's Enchanted Forest series, so I was looking for that same humor and lighthearted fun. Maybe it's impossible to achieve that in an adult's fantasy novel? Nontheless, the commonplaceness of the book was a dissapointment to me.

Wonderful idea, but not pulled off.......2001-08-13

This is the sort of fantasy story I adore -- the magical harp, the conflicting desires of the people who play it or wish to, a world with a varied population of races, castles, forests, secrets.... But it isn't quite pulled off. This is the first book I've read by Wrede -- could it be the first she wrote in her imagined world of Lyra? The book seems eager to squeeze the history of vast eras into capsule backstory here and there where, if the author had already been mid-series, it might have been better to leave a bit of mystery and work it out in the next book. Also, the suggestion that the human culture has been static for a couple thousand years is troubling, since everyone we see in this story is lively, full of ideas and ambitions. (For example, in 2000 civilized years, no one has ever thought of establishing a regular postal service? With this many little realms either actually or potentially at war over the years, no one's alchemist is busy figuring out gunpowder?) And the author's voice does not yet seem comfortably settled in this world -- or I should say, voices. It drove me nuts how some characters behave and speak as if they were Arthurian, some as if they were contemporary Americans, and a couple others as if they were 18th century British or French nobility. (And it made me particularly nuts that the story's Duke of Minathlan was lifted -- lock, stock, and elegant sneer -- from Georgette Heyer's Duke of Avon. There are even parts of Heyer's lines in his speeches.) On the whole, the world of Lyra as it appears in this book is interesting enough for me to want to make a return visit, but the book itself sort of annoyed me as much as it pleased me. A magical white harp that may be death or life to play! A music on which turns the fate of kingdoms! That's the stuff of a fantasy classic, but this book isn't it.

This book was very interesting and well-written, but it lacked any humor whatsoever, which is usually Wrede's forte. However, the plot was very creative, suspenseful, etc. I liked this book and recomend it to all fantasy lovers, that is if you can read anything without a lot of good jokes.

A wonderful (sad) story!.......1999-07-10

I love the Lyra novels and especially this one. The Harp of Imach Thyssel is really great, but sometimes I got confused keeping track of all the people who trying to get the harp. I also wish they had told more about the history of the harp, and not just the its current situation. I got really attached to the three main characters by the end of the book. If only all the rest of the Lyra books weren't out of print! I'm dying to read Caught in Crystal but I can't find it anywhere!

With there not being out the in pet stores on how to care for your hermies, this book is very helpful for the novice owner or even for a brush up for someone more experienced. I like to try and read as much as I can. It explains the background of the species as well as how to care for them properly. Thru that, it shows that they are NOT just a disposable pet to live in a little plastic container w/ a 1/4 inch of sand :-( hopefully someday that philosophy will change. They are so interesting and can live a very long time if taken care of properly. It is only a lot of work if you do not have the time.

This book is so good. But it makes me sad cuz when you read about the friendship, you know it's real. They were together ALL THE TIME from when they were kids. So really, it's a story about these friends who are like sisters. The group has broken up. And the writer talks about how they are like the Supremes. But I hope they are different from the Supremes cuz they should get back together. The original group will always be my favorite although I give mad props to all Destiny's Child members. Destiny's Child is the best girl group ever but it would be better with the original members!!!!!

I am a teacher in an endless quest for good literature for my students. I have found a winner in Yes, Yes, Yes: The Unauthorized Biography of Destiny's Child. It is a very fun, upbeat and moving manuscript about the top R&B girl group that hails from Houston, Texas.

The biography tells the story of four founding members of Destiny's Child and their nine years together. Author Kelly Kenyatta does a wonderful job of placing herself in that of a young adult to masterfully tell the story in a voice they can hear; she does it simply, yet with sophistication. Ms. Kenyatta takes the reader on a journey from the very first days of Destiny's Child as 9- and 10-year-olds to their time on T.V.'s "Star Search" to the death of their first manager, their beloved friend and mentor, to new management. The biography includes stories about the group's work with key people in the recording industry. Yes, Yes, Yes is star-studded, exciting and fast-paced the way we imagine the entertainment world to be.

But the story is emotional and distressing at times. In the end, the group has finally made two hit albums and is at the pinnacle of its success. Changes happen and Destiny's Child is never the same again. The book takes a look at how the members work through adversity. It is about trials of friendship and family. It is about shows of great intestinal fortitude. Importantly, it is the story of hope for the future of some talented young people striving to achieve -- the founding members and new players as well.
