Book Description
Sitting Marsh, a World War II town threatened by invasion, is overdue for a celebration. But when a stranger appears at a wedding--and is stabbed--sleuth Lady Elizabeth is on the case, and there's no shortage of suspects.
Customer Reviews:
A good read.......2007-06-13
As usual, a nice "lite" read for a mystery but just the thing to have in one's purse or pocket to fill in time on a train, bus or where you have some moments free. If you are an Anglophile, then this will be just your cup of tea!
Excellent Series.......2006-03-23
For those who have enjoyed the excellent Pennyfoot Hotel series by Ms. Kingsbury, this series will prove delightful, moving from the Victorian era to the English countryside during World War II in a manor house setting.
Love this series.......2006-03-18
I enjoy these books very much.As I grew up in London during the war I find it brings back some good memories of how people were then.Kate Kingsbury has really caught the "flavour" of those times.
I can't wait to read her next one in this series.
Such an enjoyable escape.......2006-02-28
I have read all of Kate Kingsbury's WW2 series and find them so relaxing and full of the most wonderful escapist writing. This last one maintained the high standard and I look forward to the next
Another Delightful Mystery.......2006-02-01
Residents of the small town of Sitting Marsh in England are looking for a distraction from the worries of World War II and find it during the wedding of Priscilla Pierce and Captain Willy Carbunkle. The residents band together, even donating their own rations, to give Priscilla and Wally a perfect wedding. Unfortunately, the wedding celebration is marred by the stabbing death of a stranger who wasn't even invited to the wedding. When it turns out that the victim was the boyfriend of one of the bridesmaids and they had been seen arguing earlier, suspicion falls on her and her family. But Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton has solved a few mysteries in the past and isn't convinced the police have the right suspects and decides to investigate the murder herself.
This is yet another delightful entry in Kate Kingsbury's Manor House mystery series. The mystery was intriguing and well plotted and Kingsbury threw in a nifty red herring that had me convinced early on that I knew who the murdered was, but I was totally wrong. The historical background is interesting, especially the details of rationing and blackouts. The real strength in these books are the characters: Lady Elizabeth struggling with her duties as Lady of the Manor and her love for Major Earl Monroe (who is regrettably in the background for much of this book); her faithful servants Violet and Martin; the various village ladies; and, of course, Sadie and Polly, young girls looking for love in war torn England.
Unfortunately, this is the second to last book in the Manor House series. The series will be missed, but this gives Kingsbury a chance to tie together the many themes that have gone on through all the books, including the identity of the "three musketeers" and a resolution of Elizabeth's relationship with Earl.

Good stories all, but..........2006-03-08
I haven't read Weber's Harrington series to know, but other reviewers have said that the Weber contribution is from elsewhere. So are the other two - the Drake story comes from "Paying The Piper" (which is good in itself, but I don't need a separate chapter) and the Flint one is found as part of "The Dance of Time" (ditto on good but don't need 2). I was a bit disappointed that Amazon doesn't state that with better clarity.
A great military sci-fi anthology.......2005-01-20
If military sci-fi is your thing, or if you want to find out if you even like military sci-fi, then The Warmasters by David Webster, Eric Flint, and David Drake is the perfect book for you. The three authors are all masters at their craft and each has a different genre and style.
The first book in this compilation is Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington by David Weber. This book is basically the navy in space, and it describes the beginning of the famous admiral Honor Harrington while she is just a simple Midshipwoman of her first military voyage.
After this is Islands by Eric Flint. It takes place during an alternate version of Earth where the Roman Empire hasn't fallen and an ongoing war is in progress in the time period of about the Imperial Age. The wife of a famous officer serving under the great General Belisarius wants to see her husband, and she goes thru the war torn Roman Empire, becoming famous in her own way getting there.
Choosing Sides by David Drake is a more conventional military Sci-fi about Hammers Slammers, an elite mercenary regiment that uses specialized hover tanks. This book continues into more of a political war when the main character is blamed for his squad's misconduct.
Overall this book is a great value, and is definitely worth buying if you have any interest in military sci-fi. The three different genres are all very different types of stories and they all make a good read.
Really, really good military science fiction.......2004-02-18
Three novellas from three of the best military science fiction authors currently publishing stories! I'd give it four stars except for the fact that David Weber's story - about Honor Harrington's middy cruise was published somewhere else (my apologies for not being able to cite it directly, but I know that I've read the story already).
Quick review of each - David Weber's story was excellent. I've been an Honor fan for a number of years and this story doesn't disappoint. In all honesty, it doesn't add too much to Honor's character either, but it's still enjoyable. If nothing else, it's interesting to see Honor with some self-doubt and a lack of tactical genius (not that she's making mistakes left and right, but she's being trained by the Captain and Tactics Officer and they know things/tricks that she doesn't).
Eric Flint - Another series that I really love. I've read reviews that the Belisarius series is predictable with characters all possessing the same dry sense of humor, but it is just so much fun to read! This short story represents a bit of a departure, as we get a completely new character Calopodius's wife (Calopodius the young officer blinded in one of the most recent full lenght novels). No nerve-wracking moments in this story, but some really nice development of two characters. If you're the emotional type you may even find a tear in your eye during some of the story (not me of course, I'm saying if you were the emotional type you might!)
Finally, there's David Drake's short story from his Hammer's Slammers series. I actually don't read this series so I had very low expectations of this story and almost skipped it (but I was still on the plane with an hour left in my flight so..) Skipping it would have been a mistake. Another well written story with interesting albeit very different characters from the other two authors.
Overall, this is a great set of short stories and novellas. They're not integral to any of the on-going series's, but they are well written and well worth your time reading them.
Worth buying for military sci-fi fans.......2002-07-09
Even though David Weber's contribution is repeated from another anthology, Warmasters is worth buying for military sci-fi fans. The second story, set in the Belisaurius universe, is excellent, both for character development (Calopodius & his wife) and for adding a medical twist to the universe. The third story, about Hammer's Slammers, is also good. I read a library copy, but have purchased a copy for my personal collection.
A ..........2002-07-02
I greatly enjoy David Weber's books. I have hard cover copies of most of them. I do not understand why he thinks that we should buy another copy of Ms. Midshipman Harrington. I already have Changer of Worlds and the same story begins both books. Mr. Weber has been very successful and I have been a part of his success. This is very hard to take. Maybe I'll wait to read his next NEW book at the library.

Warmaster Ancients
Manufacturer: BL Publishing
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1844163318 |
Product Description
Warmaster Ancients is an exciting new tabletop wargame from Warhammer Historical in which players can recreate the largest and most spectacular battles of the ancient world. Take command of huge armies as you send hordes of Vikings into the frenzy of battle or commit whole Roman Legions to heroic victory or ignoble defeat! The game has been specially created to utilise the newest ranges of 10-12mm grand scale models to represent large and impressive armies for the first time. The game easily accommodates smaller 6mm armies, and an appendix is provided for players who wish to use larger models. This book contains all of the rules and information that players will need to field and fight their battles. The book also contains 25 army lists including the Egyptians of Rameses, Harolds Saxons, William the Conquerors Normans, Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians and many more!
Customer Reviews:
an excellent tabletop game.......2006-10-06
Warmaster Ancients is one of the best tabletop gaming systems for Ancients. It is derived from the fantasy Warmaster game by the same author.
Putting the focus on the general's abilities and not on the troops', WMA gives the player the chance to feel like a general of the ancient world: his decisions are what determines if his "men" win or lose.
The book is lavishly ilustrated with clear diagrams and scores of photos of professionally-painted 10mm miniatures.
A few words of warning: Warmaster requires a lot of troops and an adequate playing space so, if you don't have a large gaming table, you'll probably end up playing on the floor!
The rules are designed for 10mm models mounted on 4cm x 2 cm bases, but an appendix is also provided for players who already have models in other scales (I play with 20mm plastic models based for DBA and the rules work fine).
The game is reasonably fast (expect to close a battle in 2-3 hours) and a large fan base and Internet communities already exist.

Awsome!.......2005-12-03
Cadet Kirk was a really cool story. I never thought he would be by the rules since he probebly broke every rule in Starfleet as a captian or admiral. Also I never thought Spock would ever approve of something Kirk does espesually because they've only met up a few times and Kirk is younger than Spock. That's part of why I enjoyed this book and if you want to go back to the beginning this book is a good resource.
phenom!.......1997-11-14
The book was a great adventure which takes us back to where it all began. Three raw cadets attempting to work out their differences and triumph in the best traditon of Star Trek lore.
Kirk was a kid?.......1997-10-16
The first adventrue of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. This book was made for kids, but it does apeal to adults too. To see the beginnings of friendship and leadership by Kirk was good. Kirk was by book, and it was surprising. McCoy was witty and Spock was somewhat solid. The three of them trapped on a planet trying to thrawt a plan to kidnap a popular doctor. This book resembles novel Trek books quite well. I liked this book and I'm sure other adults will too.
Another great story by Carey!.......1997-03-14
It was a great charcter ddevelopment book. Not many people could imagine that Kirk used to be so by - the - book. After all he has broke every rule in Starfleet and has been demoted. Still, the story turned out nicely. And the way Kirk tricked Spock, that was genius. There was only one thing, if McCoy is an ensign now it would have been a year or more between books but Kirk is still a first year cadet. Did he flunk?
Another five star job by Todd C. Hamilton.

Great Ideas... Bad Proportions.......2007-05-10
I love this book for the meals it has inspired. With a few exceptions, the proportions are pretty strange in this book. Everything must be tasted and tested for consistency, texture, and flavor.
The photos are gorgeous, and with some tweaking all of the recipes I've tried have been absolutely mind-blowing!
Haven't been thrilled with the recipes.......2007-01-14
We have tried many recipes from this book, and haven't been pleased with any of them. They turn out OK, but I expected more complex flavors and better textures from Bobby Flay recipes. I know people who have eaten at his restaurant in New York and were very impressed, so obviously he isn't publishing his best recipes. I wouldn't buy another of his cookbooks.
Bold, Straigthforward Recipes.......2002-09-04
I've been a fan of Bobby Flay's cooking shows on TV for a few years. He makes cooking a way to have fun and socialize while not taking away from the true art of cooking. So, after eyeing this book on the shelves for a few months, my sweet wife ordered it for me online.
This book is a winner! In it you'll find many fresh applications of the wonderful flavors of the southwest. For the most part, the recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. It's amazing how far you can go with just a few basic ingredients (Chile, corn, onion, garlic, etc.) In addition to learning lots of specific recipes, Bobby also gives you a great feeling for how to improvise and come up with your own bold creations. I just cooked my first few recipes from the book (New Mexico BBQ Salmon, chipotle buttered roasted corn), and they came out great!
P.S. As an extra bonus, the book is filled with lots of beautiful color photos of the dishes. It's all very artistic.
Watch his television show instead.......2001-10-21
Catch Bobby's show for a month, visit his web site and print a few recipes and you'll have this book already. No need to purchase, nothing new or exciting in here just a few of his vinagrettes, sauces and spiced up main courses. This book was a waste of my money. I had hoped he'd discuss technique and not just cram the book full of recipes I'd already seen him create on the show.
Excellent!.......2001-06-07
The first cookbook by Chef Bobby Flay. Here is an wonderful book that shows what an excellent Southwestern-style chef he is.
This book contains explanations to some of his ingredients, as well as techniques to use, when using an ingredient, for example, using yellow tomatoes versus red tomatoes. He, also, adds resources where you can find some of his hard-to-find ingredients. This is a definite plus, as a lot of the chiles are hard-to-find in my area, but so worth the effort, because once you assemble the recipe, it is SO delicious! You just can't believe it.
I tried a few of these recipes on my husband, who has a distinct taste that is hard to please, to say the least, and he has loved each recipe I have made from this book. Favorites of ours are the Pan Seared New York Steak with Chipotle Butter, Caesar Salad with Red Chile Croutons and the Peach & Blueberry Cobbler!
In addition to writing cookbooks, Bobby Flay hosts three television shows on the Food Network: "Food Nation with Bobby Flay", "Hot Off the Grill with Bobby Flay" and "Grillin' and Chillin'".
"Food Nation" is a tour of the United States in the least likely spots, where Bobby Flay explores the cuisine of that area. Spots visited have been the Pennsylvania Dutch country, Kentucky, Nashville and Boston.
"Hot Off the Grill" shows Bobby Flay assemble meals with some volunteers that may be like the more average at-home cook, showing me, how easy these dishes really are to prepare.
"Grillin' and Chillin'" has only been on during barbecue season (that I have noticed), but shows Bobby Flay with Jack McDavid, a real southern cook. Together they barbecue huge spreads all on the grill!
Bobby Flay also has his own line of spice and condiments. A wide assortment from dry rubs, drink mixes, infused oils and spice blends. These are available to purchase at his "Mesa Grill" web site: www.mesagrill.com
Also, he owns and works at two restaurants in New York City: "Mesa Grill" (Southwestern cuisine) and "Bolo" (Contemporary Spanish cuisine).
I thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook and would highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
Only an Introduction..........2004-03-06
All About Agility is tastefully written book which is exactly as the title says... all about agility! This book covers the basics, like the origin and history of agility, along with the organizations, titles, and rules. It focuses on AKC, UKC, and USDAA mainly, but mentions NADAC in passing.
After a history lesson and the rules of engagement, the author goes on to a section on teaching the individual obstacles. I was a little disappointed in the "bare-bones" guide, but like I said it is a great introduction to the sport. She thoroughly covers each obstacle, how to teach it, and how to solve problems you may encounter. She tends to present only her method and not mention other possibilities (as in the weaves or teeter) but her methods are safe and effective so it isn't too much of a concern.
Good Points for this book:
· "Training Tips from the Pros" section is really helpful, especially for the beginner
· Includes a guide to events and your first trial
· Also introduces a few other ideas for fun with fido, such as flyball and therapy work
· Has a VERY complete listing of organizations, agility equipment suppliers, agility/flyball clubs, and therapy dog associations in the US and Canada
Flaws/negative comments:
· In general, a little surfacy. There is no talk of training for excellence and drilling. It's very "just-for-fun" oriented
· NO sequence work is introduced. That would be fine if there was a sequel, but there isn't!
· No course diagrams, proofing diagrams, or handling/body cue examples.
· Really needs an instructor's guidance to achieve any training
This book is not the best, but by far not the worst! It is a great introduction for those who are thinking about agility as a "fun thing to do" or a new hobby. It clearly outlines the basics for those with absolutely no experience and is an encouragement to join a class and learn more! It is sure to hook some new agility fanatics!
Gotta read this book if you are thinking about doing agility.......2000-02-28
This book is wonderfull for people just getting started in the sport of agility. It covers everything you need to know like the different organizations, training, and basicaly everything you need to know before realy thinking about doing agility with Beau. This book is great,it answered all of my questions and I'm sure it'll answer all of yours.
Excallent Book Its REally good!.......2000-01-27
This book will help you find agility clubs in your state, tell you all the equipment that is used. It is a book for begginers not very much for older experenced people.
This book is excellent!! A must have for Agility lovers!.......1999-07-31
This book is perfect for those who are interested in learning more about Agility. It includes information that pretains to people just getting into the sport as well as tips for those who are already involved. It's detailed descriptions make it easy to follow even if one doesn't know the inside lingo. The exercises and training techniques worked wonders on my dog and I'm sure it will help you too!
Nice introduction to the sport, but not much more........1998-08-28
This is a nice book for someone looking to get into agility. Lots of good photos, and information on the obstacles, the various organizations, etc. Good information on preparing to go to your first show. Not much here for the experienced competitor.

Customer Reviews:
The People of the Mother Road.......2001-06-30
Robinson describes people who live or work on Route 66 and people who are 66 enthusiasts in one way or another. His book answers a question being asked in this 75th anniversary year of the Mother Road: What's so special about Route 66?
The author allows people to answer for themselves and from their own experience as truck drivers, state troopers, gas station attendants, artists, photographers, motel and restaurant owners, writers, gift shop operators, and even collectors of memorabilia. There is an excellent chapter on Route 66 museums, attesting to the appreciation of local communities of their 66 heritage. The photography is excellent.
The book takes a very different approach in presenting Route 66; it is about the old highway but through the perspective of people who can still be found along the way and who express well what Route 66 was and still is. The author writes well, but it is clear that through the many interviews conducted for his book he also listens well. A great variety of Route 66 lives are presented, and Robinson's "people book" is a valuable addition to the growing body of literature on the Mother Road.
The most people-oriented history of Route 66 I've read.......2001-06-14
In this book, the author manages to bring a fresh light to a subject many lovers of Americana and automobilia feel they already know by heart.
Besides being a naturally talented writer (this is his first book) and photographer, Robinson shows he has a great gift for getting to the core of his subject matter and sharing it with the rest of us. Rather than filling his pages with dry recounts of Route 66's various alignments and long lessons on '30s-era cartography, he gives us stories that in many cases leave you wanting more, such as the itinerant farmer who had to take a job at a diner in New Mexico -- and wound up owning the business for the rest of his life.
Every tale in the book comes from extensive interviews Robinson conducted while traveling the remaining sections of the highway.
The book's primary theme woven through the various first-hand recounts is the collectibility of Route 66 -- and not just the ubiquitous highway sign that's come to symbolize the Mother Road for so many people around the world. The highlighted collections run the gamut from pieces of the "hard road" itself to one man's lifelong obsession with Route 66-related postcards; from bundles of barbed wire to a yard full of neon signage.
Because I love traveling through the Midwest and West, anything written about Route 66 gets my attention. "Route 66: Lives on the Road," however, should even appeal to readers whose interests aren't so specifically focused on that famous highway.

Book Description
Art can illuminate and enrich our lives in many ways. It can excite, provoke, intrigue, and inspire. Home Sweet Home demonstrates some of the possibilities of discovering art by transforming the physical space of a home and inspiring the imagination on a daily basis. While the title relates to the domestic nature of the Peter Fay's collection, it also takes us into the psychological and expressive realms of what "art" and "home" might mean. What distinguishes Fay as a collector is his inveterate risk-taking, his particular vision for opening up dialogues between well-known artists and others who are at the beginning of their adventures in art-making.

Book Description
Eliza Potter's 1859 autobiography expresses her indignation, abolitionist sentiments, fiery temper, and sheer joy of life as she reveals the private selves of the white women whose heads she "combed." As an insider on the margins, her identity provides a unique vantage point for her story and that of the elites of nineteenth-century Cincinnati society.

Book Description
According to nineteenth-century racial uplift ideology, African American women served their race best as reformers and activists, or as "doers of the word." In Belabored Professions, Xiomara Santamarina examines the autobiographies of four women who diverged from that ideal and defended the legitimacy of their self-supporting wage labor.
Santamarina focuses on The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, Eliza Potter's A Hairdresser's Experience in High Life, Harriet Wilson's Our Nig, and Elizabeth Keckley's Behind the Scenes. She argues that beyond black reformers' calls for abolitionist work, these former slaves and freeborn black women wrote about their own overlooked or disparaged work as socially and culturally valuable to the nation. They promoted the status of wage labor as a mark of self-reliance and civic virtue when many viewed African American working women as "drudges." As Santamarina demonstrates, these texts offer modern readers new perspectives on the emergence of the vital African American autobiographical tradition, dramatizing the degree to which black working women participated in and shaped American rhetorics of labor, race, and femininity.
