Book Description

A mysterious death in a Virginia farm town has the locals scratching their heads—while frisky feline Mrs. Murphy and her friends, fat-cat Pewter and corgi Tee Tucker, uncover clues as they curl their way around a cold-blooded killer.

This balmy summer in Crozet, Virginia, postmistress Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen has a lot to think about. Things have been pretty cozy between her and her ex-husband, Fair and her beloved old post office is in danger of being replaced with a modern building—and modern rules. Harry’s thoughtful contemplation is shattered the day she stumbles over a dead body near Potlicker Creek. Barry Monteith, the handsome local horse breeder, has been savagely murdered. A true ladies’ man, Barry was known to have left a string of broken hearts behind him. But could a spurned lover be responsible for his untimely demise?

The plot only thickens when an autopsy reveals that Barry was infected with rabies weeks before he was killed. As usual, Harry can’t resist doing a little digging—with Mrs. Murphy close by to warn of approaching danger. Harry makes a remarkable discovery in the creek—the class ring of Mary Pat Reines, a local woman who disappeared thirty years earlier along with her prized Thoroughbred stallion. Like Barry, Mary Pat was a successful horse breeder—and now all of Crozet is wondering if the two cases are linked. As the police struggle with the evidence, the pressure gets hotter than a June afternoon—especially when another person is found dead of less-than-natural causes. As usual, Mrs. Murphy and her crew are the first to sniff out the truth.

But if they don’t find a way to help Harry piece together the puzzle, she could become the killer’s next target—and even Mrs. Murphy’s slinkiest moves won’t be able to save her.

3 out of 5 stars Whisker of Evil.......2006-11-23

For fans of Rita Mae Brown this is a great book. It continues the adventures of Mrs. Murphy and her many animal friends. I think this book even adds some animals we haven't heard from before. There are changes in Harry's personal and professional life of great interest to Harry's fans. There is the usual mystery. I wouldn't start the series with this book; however. Readers will want a little more background and should start with a book that was published earlier.

2 out of 5 stars If you have to do a mundane chore.......2006-07-24

such as painting a room, or cleaning the kitchen, these books are entertaining as audio books. At the risk of sounding "snobbish" (which I am not) they are a cross between "Murder She Wrote" and Mr. Ed.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2006-03-08

This is one of two books Ive read in her series. I didnt know it was a series till recently. The other one I also saw as a movie and this one I heard on C.D. with my daughter. ( as well as reading them. )
I think Mrs. Brown and partner are fantastic when it comes to intruge. My daughter screams at me everytime we get into the car and I dont have the book playing. 9 disks go a long way and I think its great learning for a baby under one to be read to as much as possible.
There are so many factions to this book and so many things come "to light" as a tie in to the other book that Ive read so I didnt have a problem keeping up with it all even though the two books are so spaced apart ( 3 years by the book standards) and about 4 or 5 since I read the last one.
I plan to get them all now that I know Mrs. Murphy has her own series of books. My daughter and I will become greater fans together when we read/hear her books at bed time!

4 out of 5 stars This is an enjoyable entry in this wonderful series!.......2006-01-30

I have been reading the Mrs. Murphy series and really enjoying it. The best part about these books is the characters and by now I feel that I know everyone. Ms. Brown knows how to characterize. In this book Harry is facing life-changing decisions, but while she's going through her own personal epiphany, there are murders occurring again in Crozet. This particualar murderer appears to be particularly evil, and Harry and her friends have trouble trying to find a motive. There's also an old crime that appears to be connected to the new ones, and the murderer doesn't appear to be able to stop killing so they are really in a rush to find himr or her. The book moves along quickly, and I also found out some good information on horse breeding and on the transference and symptoms of rabies infection at the same time. Great fun!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Entry in the Series So Far.......2005-11-05

I really, really enjoyed this particular Mrs. Murphy mystery. As a horse person, I didn't find the detail about breeding and bloodlines to be tiresome. And the mystery itself was wonderfully wrought and believable. The relationships between the primary characters are developing nicely, too. Looking forward to continuing with the series.

      4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-01

In the wake of all the Batman anthologies, Bantam threw in a couple more with DC hero themes. Superman is not exactly a rocket science selection, when thinking of characters to use. There are pieces here, however, by Mark Waid, Dave Gibbons, Will Murray and Diane Duane.

Joey Cavalieri gives us the excellent "Mine Enemy Grows Older".

      Again, a collection worth having.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry collection of stories.......2004-05-27

Most of the stories in this book offers little or no insight into the character of Superman. In fact very few of the authors display more than a limited knowledge of the history of the Man of Steel. With the exception of "The Warrior of the final dawn" & "mine enemy grows colder", none of the stories here offer anything meaningful. Whats equally puzzling is the absence of several notoroius Superman villains such as Brainiac, Parasite, Bizarro, Intergang etc.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Grab Bag Of Superman Stories.......2003-05-23

This is a wonderful collection of misc. Superman stories. As a die hard Superman fan and a serious collector of superman comics, I am familiar with MANY Superman stories. These are definately very good ones. The best one is definately "Excerpt From The Diary Of Dr. Morris Funkelstein" by Mike Resnick. It tells the story of Clark Kent attempting to enlist in the military to fight the Nazis. If you are a fan of Superman stories these should be added to your collection.

      2 out of 5 stars A rather bland anthology.......2002-01-23

This anthology, edited by Martin Greenberg, showcases several tales told about Superman - arguably the most popular and well-known comic book character ever.

I picked up this anthology at a bookstore, but after finishing the book, I have some reservations about it. While several of the stories are nice, they're a bit too bland for my taste. Many of them are just sort of there; they're not really bad stories, all things considered, but there's nothing really special about them, nothing that sets them apart. They're just average, run-of-the-mill stories about Superman doing various good deeds. If you're a die-hard Superman fan, maybe that's enough. For me, it left me wanting a good deal more.

If you're a big Superman fan, and you simply MUST have anything written about the character....maybe this book is for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend against picking up this book. It's nothing horrible, it's just, unfortunately, quite average. And when there are other, better books out there written about the Superman character (such as Roger Stern's adaption of the "Death of Superman, or even certain comic book graphic novels / trade paperback such as the excellent Paul Dini / Alex Ross work "Superman: Peace on Earth" or the wonderful Jeph Loeb / Tim Sale miniseries, "A Superman for All Seasons"), I can't see justifying purchasing this particular anthology.

3 out of 5 stars Unique- with drawbacks........2007-03-01

I bought this book based on all the good reviews and was a little disappointed....almost every recipe calls for a food processor and not having one at the moment pretty much excluded alot of the recipes. Of the ones I did make my two pugs weren't crazy about them. It is O.K. but there are many more that are better out there...

        4 out of 5 stars Good Service.......2007-01-16

This is one of the best cookbooks for dogs. The recipes are very easy to follow and I also like how there are instructions for storing. You don't find that in alot of other books like these. My dogs love everything I've made so far and will be making some goodie treats this Christmas for my friends with pets. I would recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great info on horses but the title is misleading.......2007-04-18

This book was packed with great information on horse facilities but it was not the information I needed. I was looking for a book on managing a truly small horse property (mine is 4/5s of an acre) so I have to agree with those who comment that the "small acreages" in this book are not small at all, especially not to someone in Califonia. An acre here is considered "horse property" since most Californians owning much more land than that are probably millionaires (unless in the desert.) True, there was a plan or two that could work on an acre but the info I truly needed, info unique to such a small area, was not in this book. We Californians need advice on how to manage manure in a small area with neighbors on all sides and what about the turnout area, which obviously is not going to support the growth of any grasses. The barns and buildings in the book are way too large and extravagent for the average small horse property here. There are many problems unique to truly small horse properties but this book doesn't really address them.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book for a newby.......2007-02-18

This book goes over basically every detail that I can think of that would help to begin a horse farm or just having one horse. It covers everything from buying land, thinking about the neighbors to drainage and barns. Cherry covers it all in detail and it is very well explained. If you get one book on this topic this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one barn book, buy this one!.......2005-04-20

Even if you already have a barn orr board your horses somewhere, this is a great book to read. There is information about how horse behaviour affects taking care of them, and tons of information about stable management. There are many helpful charts comparing types of stall floorings, etc. In response to a previous reviewer's comment that there are not any plans for an acre of half acre of land, that is incorrect. There is a sample layout, where the pastures are, where the house is, where the barn is, for a a 1/2 acre piece of land, and one for a 1-acre pice of land on pages 72 and 73. There is tons of information on land, fencing, equipment, care, etc.

          5 out of 5 stars A wealth of Information.......2004-12-29

Since I have bought this book I have read it everytime I have a free minute. I have been working i the horse industry for many years now and am thinking of starting my own horse business. Although as I read the first half of the book I realise that I already know a lot of the information, there are still certain points that are new to me. It is an excellent resource of information for anybody thinking of starting a small horse business, and in particular to those people who have not worked extensively in the horse industry. For people who already have knowledge of the horse industry there is a wealth of information on the business side of running a farm and also for pitfalls to watch out for. This book has further inspired me to follow my dream of having my own horse business on my own land.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-02-24

I just received this book and I skimmed through it briefly, and I'm already thrilled that I bought it. It has excellent examples, charts comparing different things/cost/durability...

I'm planning on building my own barn in the next 5 years or so, and this book will help me tremendously!

          Highly Recommended!

I was very disappointed by the floor plans in this book. The designs were very traditional and the lots shown were gradually sloping rather than hillsides. None of the innovative designs of the last decade were even imitated. If you are looking for conventional designs, you may find this book of some value.

              3 out of 5 stars Hillside Homes: 208 Sloping-Lot & Multi-Level Designs.......2000-06-08

I was disappointed in the book because it did not include some designs of "Drive-Under" garage on the rear of the house. There were plenty of "garages-On-The-End" designs. I want a split level plan with ground-level entrance from the front to the top (ground)level and a driveway leading to the rear with a drive-under or garage with storage, etc and stairs leading to the top level. I would appreciate some suggestions if you know of a book that includes such. My email address is jbjact@juno.com. Home to be built on a 15 to 25 degree slope-to-the-rear terrain in Alabama.

This book had many home plans that would fit our needs. We have a child who is in a wheelchair and needed a ranch style house with almost everything on one level. At the same time we also have a teenage son who wants his own space, so having the option of a livable daylight basement was a plus. The only problem now is choosing which plan!

5 out of 5 stars Autobiography of Ohiyesa.......2002-02-04

If you have read the writings of Ohiyesa (Charles Alexander Eastman); I HIGHLY recommend this book to you.

It helped me understand the forces that shaped this man.

                      My favorite areas are

The assorted photos of his father "Many Lightnings", his wife, his son Ohiyesa at the age of 5.

Events that occured while he was attending school in the East, and the bigotry he encountered from "SOME" white people.

4 out of 5 stars From the deep woods to civilization.......2000-06-03

There are certainly not enough autobiographies of Native Americans, and few that can compare with Eastman's story and journey to find civilization. As Eastman follows Christianity and the White Man's Civilization, he finds himself realizing the paradox of the two worlds. Upon returning to a more civilized world, he gives a captivating look at how Jesus was an Indian and how different the White world and Native American world was during his life. A perfect self-enlightenment book.
