Strong Supernatural Fiction.......2007-09-23

The first novel in Saintcrow's Dante Valentine series is equal to any in the modern urban fantasy genre. Equal to Jim Butcher (Dresden Files) and Rachel Caine (The Hollows). Better than the rest.

Dante is a smart, competent, tough, girl with an interesting supernatural power of being a Necromance. She speaks with the dead, but as a side-job collects bounties on supernatural criminals. Her action scenes are pithy, and I especially like how Dante will think something sarcastic, and then say it, not really caring about the consequences.

Plotwise, the novel went fast. The romantic overtones influenced the plot, but remained minor points, not hijacking the pace at all. Setting was acceptable, though I thought Saintcrow better described a walk in Hell than the political landscape of her future society. I wasn't sure how large or what form of government the Hegemony was.

The characters Dante ends up running with are each memorable in their own way. Two big plusses were 1.) wasn't a single vampire in the novel, and 2.) novel is set in more than one city. I highly recommend this work if you like modern supernatural stories.

Super Reader.......2007-08-31

For a book that looks like it is supposed to be a romance type novel, it is actually pretty light on the mushy stuff, so much so that is is almost absent. More towards the early Hamilton or Harrison books, and fairly straight urban fantasy.

The main character is a Necromance. This does mean what it suggests. She is a very low rent necromancer. She carries a sword. Your average powerful wizard type doesn't need to bother.

The plot could be straight out of Hellblazer. Lucifer wants something done, the demons are trying to play each other over a mystic object and a breeding scheme for power.

She is hired to get in the middle, and ends up working with a demon partner.

Catching book.......2007-08-27

Definitely liked the book, but I have to admit it was a bit hard to read. There were many references to things I didn't understand, which was a bit boring at times since I kept on losing interest in the book. I liked Dante, her her personal development, and I definitely liked the supporting characters, but the romance she later developed with the demon was a little odd.

Overall, it was an entertaining read. Will I read the next book? Most likely.

Dark and Original.......2007-08-10

Necromancer Dante Valentine makes a deal with the devil. Dante must hunt down and kill a rogue demon. In exchange, Lucifer will let Dante live. It's not much of a choice. But when Dante realizes that the rogue demon was the one who murdered her friend years ago, she becomes all the more eager to hunt down the killer. With a lesser demon tagging along for protection, Dante will be getting into more than she bargained for.

Dante Valentine is a headstrong, independent, and powerful necromancer, able to raise the dead. When trouble comes her way, she faces it head on. And only grudgingly accepts help from others. She's a complex character who sometimes seems to have a death wish, but also feels deeply for those she cares about.

Working for the Devil is a very dark and gritty urban fantasy, with plenty of action and suspense. Danger lurks around every corner, as everyone seems to want Dante dead. Saintcrow has created a unique futuristic society blending magic and advanced technology. With more heartache than romance, the story is a cross between a crime novel and an early Anita Blake book.

I'm looking forward to the next installment, Dead Man Rising, to see what's next for Dante and to get another glimpse into Saintcrow's original world.

Very good paranormal adventure.......2007-08-02

There is one thing that I find quite annoying about this book. Its not the authors fault as the Christian Theologians had messed up the titles and classification of the various critters in hell by the mid 1600s and Milton and the romantics made it worse. Among other things Lucifer means light bearer or more appropriately one who enlightens (in the Eastern sense). Lucifer was a title applied to Christ (maqybe Milton was taking a snide aside at the church).

On with the review.

The author has created an interesting world with some futuristic touches and has done a good job of it. (As a physicist I have trouble swallowing anti gravity [as gravity is a curvature of space/time caused by concentrations of mass] but hey its a fantasy).

The characters are well drawn but only two are really compelling. The plot is pretty linear with a little humor as the villains hide out. With a better plot I would have rated it considerably higher. But its still a real good read.

Volume 6 of this impressive series continues the fantastic story of Gin's life as a penguin. The stories are:

Chapter 1 is a telling of a story when Gin was still human and how he and an enemy teamed when dealing with a nasty professor.

Chapter 2 is a Valentine's Day story

Chapter 3 introduces Ko, an underaged pervert, to the continuing story.

Chapter 4 goes further into Ko's "pervyness".

Chapters 5 & 6 sees Gin getting involved in the life of a weathergirl.

Chapter 7 sees Gin and Mike being sought by people who wish to sell them to a pet shop.

Chapter 8 has Gin getting into the mating season mood.

Chapter 9 see Gins gettig abused by Minako's father while trying to get Grilled Cod-roe Rice Balls.

Good stuff.

Interesting collection.......2000-03-28

A collection of short stories and essays (and even a poem) on the possibility of using a solar-sail as a mean of inter-planatary travel. Written by masters like Niven, Clark, Brin & Anderson, this book cannot be bad. The stories are interesting, and the book is not too long that the premise begins to become annoying. Maybe the theme is a bit forced at some points. All in all, one of many other good sci-fi collections.

I found this book to be very helpful. I recently recieved a slow cooker as a gift from my niece and had no clue how to use it. After reading this book I felt very confidant and gave it a try. To my surprise, the whole family loved the meals that I cooked from this book. The book gives you both the traditional way to cook the meals and the slow cooker way.I now cook with this book at least once or twice a week--what an easy way to get a delicious meal on the table without having to hover over the stove! The stew was great, as was the roast pork with apples, sweet potatoes and plantains(a new family favorite). Can't wait to try the cranberry brisket and the lemon chicken.

i searched and searched for a slow cooker/crock pot cookbook and finally found this one. not only does it have good recipes, it mainly has instructions/tips, etc. about how to use your cooker and how to get the most from it. i only wish it had recipes for my size cooker/3 and 1/2 qt. instead of the 6. but, i can usually adjust down the ingredients. this is the perfect cookbook for me since i am a dummie when it comes to cooking. lol!

I liked the fact that this book explains so much about slow-cooker cooking, in addition to the yummy-sounding recipes. I haven't tried any yet, though, so I can't comment on the recipes themselves...

Buy this book BEFORE you buy the slow cooker.......2006-02-15

I'm going to jump the gun and review this book before I've cooked any of the recipes. I haven't bought the slow cooker yet. I mainly chose this book to educate myself on what to look for when shopping for a slow cooker. I've never owned one before and I didn't want to buy one and then realize which features I should have looked for. How many appliances have I bought that I wish I hadn't, only because I didn't know enough about how the appliance functions. Not going to make that mistake again so this time I'm starting with the cookbook first. I think it's going to pay for itself even if I don't like the recipes (which I'm sure I will once I try them). Information contained in this book still applies to slow cookers sold today, I've been shopping for them this week. What has changed is that the quality of slow cookers has declined, reviews show you that, all the more reason to purchase this book to help you sort out the wheat from the chaff.

Looking at the recipes in this book I see that they call for a 4qt or a 6qt slow cooker and the instructions are given in hours on either a Low or High setting. Now that I've seen what a slow cooker recipe looks like I know that a cooker with a dial that has these settings is going to make it easier to follow the recipe. I also know that there is a difference between cookers that use a wrap around heating element and a bottom only heating element. The book warns you about the pitfalls of owning a slow cooker with a bottom only heating element. It also talks about the insert, how some models allow the insert to be placed directly on your stovetop but this means you do not have a true slow cooker. Lots of informative advice I am so glad I am aware of now. Makes shopping for a slow cooker less daunting.

Great Cookbook.......2005-12-06

I love this cookbook. It gives the reader all sorts of helpful information on cooking with a slow cooker, along with many excellent recipes. Much better than some of the fancier slow cooker cookbooks, with recipes that take too much time. After all, I bought my slow cooker to SAVE time!

The Guide To Owning A Great Dane.......2006-02-04

The book had some really great glossy pictures. I did not think the book was very informative it sort of touched on different subjects but nothing in depth it was VERY basic. It did not help me on my decision on whether or not to add a Great Dane to my family. I am considering getting a Great Dane and this book was not helpful at all except to show me some very nice pictures of some gorgeous dogs and puppies. It was a nice read but not very helpful or informative.

Great! An informative and interesting read for the average prerson who is looking into the breed. The high gloss pages and many photos in the book were beautiful. It is a high quality book for the price. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in the great dane.

Enlightening, but not terribly practical.......2001-12-13

Some really neat ideas here, but most don't seem very simple to execute. I wanted some ideas for punching up my pre-made lampshades or maybe creating simple fabric lampshades, but the projects in this book are a bit more convoluted. There are some inspiring lamps and shades, but to make some of them require special materials and skills that would involve more time and effort than I'm willing to spend.

UNEVEN...BUT OVERALL, A VERY PLEASANT READ..........2004-08-07

When I decided to pick up this book and read it for a second time this spring, Ralph Wiley was still alive. I felt it was my duty as a fan of his sociological books (especially "Why Black People Tend to Shout") to write a review here -- and I also felt compelled to see if I missed anything from the first time I read it way back in 1997. Today (minutes before writing this review) I learned that Mr. Wiley has passed on, and while I do believe everything happens for a reason, I still feel it is a shame that Mr. Wiley didn't have more time to share his views with people like me who loved to read and listen.

I don't think this book was as consistent as the first one, however some chapters were incredibly engaging. Of particular note was the incredible amount of foresight it must have taken for Wiley to devote an entire chapter to Cathy Hughes of Washington, D.C., who would go on launch Radio One, the largest Black-owned radio company in the nation *and* TV One, a joint venture with Comcast cable that serves as an adult-alternative to the younger-skewed BET. I read with great interest how Wiley so skillfully illustrated her story (along with her son Alfred Liggins who is the no. 2 executive at both companies). Again, I cannot stress enough how "right on" Ralph was to highlight Ms. Hughes so early on in her career. He was probably the first major writer to do so.

I also enjoyed his musings on the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill controversy, the "Strange Fruit" chapter (which to me was a throwback to his earlier book), his whole take on the Spike Lee/Denzel Washington/Malcolm X project (probably my favorite chapter), and his essay on Magic Johnson. "What Black People Haven't Done Yet," and "Do All Black People Know Each Other" also captured the thought-provoking incisiveness that made "Tend to Shout" such a can't-miss work of literature, and his final chapter spoke to me in ways it didn't the first time around.

My three-star rating is actually a 3 and 1/2 star rating. There were some chapters that I ended up skimming through because for some reason or another, I wasn't drawn in. But the entries I mentioned were more than enough incentive for me to finish this book. Again, I can't help but feel truly dissapointed that I will now never meet Mr. Wiley, or be able to read anything new from his end in the years to come. But one thing I am happy to say is this: he inspired me to pick up a pen and attempt to write something of my own back in 1997, and now in 2004 I am even more compelled to make that vision a reality.

Like Wiley, I have a passion for entertainment - his passion was sports. My passion is music. Both sports and music can be analyzed and chronicled through a sociological lens, and I plan to excercise my right to express myself the way Mr. Wiley did so well. I highly recommend his first sociological work "Why Black People Tend to Shout" for a look into his thoughts on race relations in the '80s. I didn't even know who Willie Horton was until I read that book. I'd like to thank Mr. Wiley for writing so passionately (and so humorously at times too!), and my roommate from 1995's Washington Journalism Conference for hipping me to his first book way back when. Thanks.
