Book Description

Nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, Miller's Kill, New York is about as safe as it gets. That's why Episcopal minister Clare Fergusson is shocked when the July Fourth weekend brings a rash of vicious assaults to the scenic town. Even Clare's good friend, police chief Russ Van Alstyne, is shaken by the brutality of the crimes-especially when it appears that the victims were chosen because they are gay. But when a third assault of an out-of-town developer ends in murder, Clare and Russ wonder if the recent crime wave is connected to the victim's controversial plan to open an upscale spa in Miller's Kill. But not all things in the tiny town are what they seem-and soon, Clare and Russ are left to fight their unspoken attraction to one another even as they uncover a labyrinthine conspiracy that threatens to turn deadly for them both....

4 out of 5 stars A Landed Interest Can Land You in Trouble.......2007-07-24

Sophomore novels usually suffer from a let-down, either the author has been pushed to produce a second novel in too-short a time or they themselves want to produce so as to keep the readers interested. Drawing on the military experiences of both main characters (Fergusson and Van Alstyne) and her own childhood as as 'army brat' Spencer-Fleming (SF) weaves a tale of ecological deceit and gay-bashing.

When is a hate crime not a hate crime? When it is committed to throw off suspicion from some other criminal activity. After many years, the Landry property is finally going to be developed into a modern 'destination' spa. The development will mean jobs and increased tourism for the town of Miller's Kill. But at what cost?

What begins as an episode (actually two) of random gay bashing proceeds to lead to a murder mystery. In between Rev.Clare and Police Chief Russ are trying to sort out their feelings for each other while maintaining their professional distance. SF does a masterful jobs of reminding us of what the 'true' work of Rev.Clare represents, with her performing marriages and 'mass' while questioning the the workings of Gd and her vestry. Russ is busy trying to keep a lid on the town during the Fourth of July weekend.

There is a marvelous ending with Clare and Russ making an helicopter rescue and then surviving a crash. Only some poor dialog by a character near the end weakens a strong story. Why is it poor? How many people involved in a crime and at their wits end, will spend their final time on earth explaining why they did what they did to the police (during a shoot -out)?

5 out of 5 stars Love and Small Town Politics.......2007-05-21

The main characters' developing relationship is set against an action-packed backdrop of small town politics.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing!.......2007-03-20

I loved the first book in this series, but was deeply disappointed with the second one. I am hoping that the third through fifth, which I have yet to read, return to the debut novel's strengths.

First, there was WAY too much action in this book. I am not opposed to some action, but this book read like a Rambo screenplay. I imagine the average reader of this series is looking for a thoughtful but lively mystery focused on an Episcopal priest and a cop, not some improbable, explosion-packed jungle adventure book.

What's instead compelling are the small town details, the main characters' growing attraction to one another, the details of being a cop or a priest, better characterization of the minor characters.

This book needed to have a good editor to cut 75% of the action and add in a lot more details and character growth. Why don't we see Russ's wife? Clare's parents or friends from her past? The interesting details of her priesthood? Why aren't Russ's colleagues fleshed out better?

Spencer-Fleming needs to take a lesson from Lillian Jackson Braun's Cat Who series. Braun develops her town characters well enough that they flow from book to book and are part of the delight of the series. Planes exploding and passions exploding will only take a writer and a series so far!

1 out of 5 stars Sick of the liberal "moralizing".......2006-11-18

The first book I read in this series was actually the 3rd book in the series. I loved it and went looking for the first two. I enjoyed the first book but I could barely make myself finish this one.

It's more of a liberal preaching her politics through the main character with a mystery thrown in than anything else. I got so sick of it I started skimming the book just to find out who done it.

It was so predictable. Every liberal is a good guy and all conservatives are closed minded and bigoted (unless the "enlightened" Clare wins them over to her side). I hope the author goes back to writing mysteries and keeps her politics out of it. Or this will be the last book by her I read.

4 out of 5 stars Intricate and enjoyable fast-paced read.......2006-09-27

"Fountain" starts with an attack on a gay physician and keeps the pace going from there.

The town is in an uproar because PCBs are found at the proposed site of a high dollar resort. Economic advocates want the jobs and tourism the resort will bring. Liberal 'tree huggers' want the resort plans shelved.

Unfortunately, this controversy pits Police Chief Russell Van Alstyne against his 70-ish Mom, Margy. When she lands in jail, it's no surprise to anyone that her son was the one arresting her!

A second attack on a gay man, this one a video store owner, has the Chief now pitted against the story's other protagonist, Anglican Priest Reverand Clare Fergusson.

And if that wasn't enough--the Chief and the Reverand are in love. One big complication is that the chief has a 'beautiful wife of 25 years'. This second novel shows the chink in the chief's marriage. Linda doesn't show much interest in police work--and Russ' Mom doesn't like Linda, either.

Things are definitely going to be interesting when I read the third book--and have no doubt I will!

Clark Ashton Smith was a prodigy, who wrote Arabian Nights novels in his mid-teens and was heralded as a major voice in American poetry by the time he was nineteen. In one frantic burst in the middle 1930s, he wrote nearly a hundred strange, wondrous, and grotesque stories, most of which were published in Weird Tales, Strange Tales, Wonder Stories, and other pulps, but he was by no means a conventional pulp writer. A direct heir to Edgar Allan Poe and to the late Romantics and Decadents, a translator of Baudelaire, Smith wrote in baroque, jeweled prose of distant times and remote planets, of baleful magics and reanimated corpses, lost lovers, eldritch gods, and inexorable fate. He is also a writer whose works refuse to die, even after nearly a century. Think of him as the sorcerer-poet, alone in his eyrie in the dry California hills, dreaming his strange dreams and creating his unique worlds-of Zothique, the Earth's haunted last conti- nent at the end of time, Hyperborea, a prehistoric land, Posei- donis, the last foundering isle of Atlantis, and Averoigne, an unhistoried province of medieval France, thick with vampires. Think of the visions his stories conjure up as sendings, written in strange runes, transported from the sorcerer's lair by indescribable genii or winged spirits. His stories are altogether unlike anyone else's and quite wonderful, among the treasures of fantastic literature. This fine collection of Clark Ashton Smith's work reprints eight of his classic fantasies, including two set in Hyperborea.

3 out of 5 stars somewhat disappointing collection.......2005-05-27

hopefully, this isn't the best of clark ashton smith's work. this collection of 8 tales is disappointing overall. technically speaking, smith's effortless command of the language and attention to detail is impressive, but plot is often a weak point. what works in his favor is that smith does seem capable of being equally at ease with three categories of imaginative fiction horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. these tales might appeal to fans of h.p. lovecraft, but in truth, while interesting in an eerie, gothic way, smith's work is less intriguing and lacks the depth of that of his famous friend. it seems likely that this isn't really a sample of his best work, but more of a random overview of his output. i haven't given up on smith, yet i'm hoping that smith has other, better tales to justify his reputation as a talented creator of weird fiction..

4 out of 5 stars Nice Variety of Tales.......2005-03-25

Smith offers a splendid bouquet of tales here in this very fine edition by Wildside Press. Their new releases of Smith's strange and alluring prose are nicely bound, and all feature fantastic cover art that beg the viewer to buy and open these treasure troves of pure fantasy. Highly recommended, as is the previous release of "The Double Shadow", so I really look forward to "The White Sybil" this Summer.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect starter.......2005-01-31

Clark Ashton Smith was man with an unlimited imagination. His flowery tales of the fantastic and weird stand out as shining star for his time.

This book only scratches the surface of his vast collection of works, but it does offer a very diverse selection of his style.

For those who are familiar with Smith and his written works, this book will feel somewhat short and lacking.
On the other hand, If you are new to the work of CAS and would like to get a taste of his style without cleaning out your wallet in the process, then this book is for you.

It is the perfect CAS starter.

Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Service on a lark, but despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper. In boot camp he will learn how to become a soldier, but when he graduates and war comes (as it always does for soldiers), he will learn why he is a soldier. Many consider this Hugo Award winner to be Robert Heinlein's finest work, and with good reason. Forget the battle scenes and high-tech weapons (though this novel has them)--this is Heinlein at the top of his game talking people and politics.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Paying for the Right to Vote.......2007-09-18

When Heinlein first penned this work in response to a call by some politicians to unilaterally disarm the United States, I doubt if he thought it would become one of his best known and most controversial works, a work which continues to have steady sales and whose influence on the science-fiction field has been enormous.

It's a simple story, one of the growth of Juan Rico from boy to man, as he enlists in the military of the future, and learns just what duty and responsibility mean, what his own capabilities are, and just what he wants out of life.

What is controversial about this book is the philosophy that suffuses it, is in fact the heart of this book, as Heinlein posits a future where, in order to vote or hold political office, you must prove your willingness to support and defend the society through either military service or service in one of the non-combatant auxiliary services. As part and parcel of this idea, no one can be refused entry into these services, even if blind or paralyzed, so political franchise is available to anyone who so desires (as opposed to some of the limitations that have been put on the voting franchise by various states at various times - and remember that this book was written in 1959, long before the Voting Rights Act of 1965). Heinlein further posits that such a society, even though the people who hold office were no better, smarter, or otherwise more qualified than our current leaders, would be a more stable society than our current one because their authority is balanced by their proven sense of responsibility and duty towards that society, a point that is certainly debatable, but in the absence of any real-world society so structured, must remain a conjecture.

Right alongside this idea are statements that rights must be earned (a critical failure of our current society is the inculcated belief that people have these rights just because they exist - that they are `owed' things without having to make any effort of their own), that correct moral attitudes are not inherent but must be taught (and a lack of corporal punishment in the early developing years does not help in this education), that war is a political statement whose level of violence must be geared towards what the political goal is, that the dictum that `violence never solves anything' is hogwash, that communism is based on faulty premises, and a whole host of other such ideas.

Now quite a few people have labeled this book as `fascist' because of this military service requirement, when it is no such thing (just look up the definition of fascist). Heinlein does glorify the military to some degree, but he also shows (often by counter-example) just how screwed up the military can be. And far from robotic adherence to commands, he clearly indicates that military people should question orders they think are suspect (at the right time and place - not while the bullets are whizzing over your head). There is a well-established court system, that like ours is pretty much insulated from political influence, and a political election process that is far away from any fascist government organization.

His depiction of boot camp and later military operations is excellent, comparable to similar descriptions in things like Leon Uris' Battle Cry. Rico is very well portrayed, a man that is very easy to empathize with and understand his thought processes. The plot seems to ramble a bit, as the story is not really about the Bug war, but about Rico's development. Once you understand this, it is very logical, coherent, and often exciting. The philosophy is presented with anecdotes, analogies, and concrete examples that make it easy to understand and far from being just `dry lecture', though perhaps that is the only real flaw with this book, as there is perhaps just too much of this `telling', rather than `showing'. But in general this is extremely readable, with Heinlein's typical unforced, near-folksy prose and clear thought processes.

This book has been, at various times, on the recommended reading list of all of our military service academies. I would go further, and recommend that this book be added to the list of `required reading' that our high school students are subject to. Whether you agree with ideas of this book or not, at the very least this book will make you think, and that's not a bad thing for students to learn how to do.

            --Reviewed by Patrick Shepherd (hyperpat)

            4 out of 5 stars My Idea of a Sci-Fi Novel.......2007-09-08

Just so there is full disclosure...I read this book years ago, so some of my recollection of the events in the book are hazy at best. However, I rate this as one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi books because of the action-adventure throughout the novel. Besides being a good adventure novel, it brings interesting philosophical questions to the table: Who should dictate rights and privileges? In the novel, in order to vote and get citizenship rights, one must serve a stint in the military. This creates a government of people who have served in the military and have first-hand experiance on defending human rights. This system, however, creates a government that is revolting to people who are students of the American Constitution. I feel this is Heinlein's intent.

Many people have commented on the brutality of the Boot Camp sections of the book. Well, boot camp is brutal. It has to be. Granted, Heinlein seems to enjoy making it seem almost a saditic exercise, but it is with the point of showing what it takes to become a citizen.

Overall, I recommend this book to anybody, whether you like science-fiction or not, because of the questions it raises about what it means to be a citizen, and a human.

As a side note, I also recommendthe movie, only if to see how not to make an adaptation.

5 out of 5 stars More than Sci Fi.......2007-09-08

This novel does an excellent job of stating and offering solutions for the decline of todays great civilization. Heinlein uses the life of Rico in order to display to us the folly of many present ideas of rights, discipline and knowledge. If we apply these ideas we just might be able to turn around the place our society is heading. This novel is for anyone who would like to understand the nature of tight knit military units, and for anyone who would like a refreshing read. Heinlein was definitely ahead of his times.

1 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down.... Because I wanted to know if it gets better!.......2007-09-07

I wasted two days on this book!

The first day I read a few pages and put it down. I was thinking, "OK he can't be serious, he is not naive is he?" And then to give the book a second chance I read it entirely the second day and no, it don't get better!

            The Good:

1- I liked the idea that people have a responsibility to society at large. That is a good one.

            The Bad:

1- Don't question your leaders. NO! Question the baztards! I don't know how someone who can believe that people are naturally self interested, like the author believes, can also believe in follow the saintly leader bull crap!

2- Spanking stops crime. BULL CRAP, the crime rates were worse in the 1920s than today and they did not only spank, they beat the hell outta their kids! Corporal Punishment Stops crime. BULL CRAP, IT CREATES HARDER CRIMINALS! Corporal punishment don't work, people will only support a law if they can see it is in their self interest. Making someone frightened, angry, or hateful does not show that a law is in their self interest!

3- It just is, there is no point to the story. The ending? There is no conclusive ending, it is crap! The story just lags on and on, and believe me I was reading this book all the way through trying to find some entertaining and redeeming qualities.

4- Lets quote Das Kapital and then come up with inane conclusions from two sentences of it. I have read Das Kapital, can someone else show me how someone being a s--ty cook disproves the book and merits of Communism? I mean really the part he was quoting was describing a capitalistic mechanic anyways! So if that part he "disproves" disproves the merits of communism, I guess it also disproves the merits of Capitalism as well! (Capitalism you can see he supports in the book: He supports the use private contractors logistical involvement in military affairs, so don't say he is anti-capitalist and anti-communist, cause he ain't!)

5- He says his main character was part of a debate club, but guess what? There ain't any debating in this book! It is just one one-sided throughout the book, basically the book can be summed up by the Ex-Cincinnati Reds Owner Marge Schott "Hitler was good in the beginning, but went too far."

            The Ugly!

1- This is one case where I can say, I liked the Movies better than the book and guess what? I hated the movies! Though part two with the fully naked chick was soft on the eyes.

1 out of 5 stars Supports beating people (abuse) to "teach" them better.......2007-09-03

I liked the movie, so I decided to read the book. It was far different. I found that Heinlein was a very nasty person who writes in a mean, nasty, boring style. When I got to the part where he advocated beating soldiers during training, I had enough. Japanese soldiers in WW2 were beaten a lot in their training, and they were by far the most vicious, sadistic soldiers in WW2, committing many atrocities, rapes, and murders of innocent people and babies. I think Heinlein was an idiot and won't be reading any more of his books.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Recipes from a Great Teacher.......2006-03-27

I have been very disappointed in many raw foods recipe books over the years. Too many of them are obsessed with dehydrators and complex recipes that make me want to avoid raw food diets.

Sunfood Cuisine is a great book that not only gives great recipes but gives excellent formulas for how to quickly develop your own.

There are some recipes that require dehydration which is annoying, but for the most part, the recipes are fabulous, creative and delicious.

              The breakdown is (generally speaking)

The most interesting result of my purchasing and using this book and RECIPES FOR LIFE by Rhonda Malkmus is my dear husband's refusal to eat that stupid raw stuff that it was not good and it did not fill him up, etc.

After one week of making entirely raw food meals, he told me with a thrill that he loves eating this way (the kids are becoming fond of it as well) and that he really is not enjoying cooked food as much anymore.

That, is nothing short of a miracle!

We are on our third week using these books and the family is still happy and looking forward to mealtime. The raw pie that I made was what I did in response to the demand for pancakes and syrup (whole grain and maple syrup) this past weekend.

I was not sure if they would mutiny or not, but I was shocked when my family who usually polishes off a full bunch of pancakes was very full and satisfied just from one raw pie as I made using the formula given in SUNFOOD CUISINE.

Clean up is a lot easier too.

So far I am thrilled with this book and it truly has opened up the world of raw foods in a way that I finally am able to use it in our family more than just a few days and then want to give up again.

              4 out of 5 stars Raw & Juicy.......2002-04-21

I have been waiting for this book for nearly two years. I now have the book and have been trying out some of the recipes. It's great to have someone talk about how to make the best raw soups, salads and others. Fred includes guides to create your own recipes. A very good book, well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Cockatiels, A complete pet owners mannual.......2007-01-17

All i can say is GREAT. I have never owned a bird and this is what i needed to find all the info about buying, raising, and caring for the new member of the family. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good, informative and practical guide about Cockatiels.......2005-08-05

I just read the only review for this book....come on, it's not that bad at all. Risa Teitler has written some of the finest books on taming and training pet birds. This book is informative and has lots of practical information in it that covers all aspects of taking care of these unique birds. The book is 92 pages long, and the section on breeding starts on page 76 and goes to the end of the book, so that is a lot of breeding information for a beginner, but it says right there in the text that "...breeding birds are not usually tame to their owners once they begin rearing a family....if possible, keep a single pet and buy other cockatiels for breeding." So, forewarned is forearmed in this case. This fact is true of many other pet birds as well. At least she was honest about it.
And, of course the pictures are great, I mean who doesn't think that cockatiels are cute? I have given this book 4 stars because I thought it was a decent read and most people would like it.

1 out of 5 stars Insufficient focus and detail........2000-05-25

Absolutely without a doubt the best thing about Teitler's `Taming and Training Cockatiels' is the wonderful color photographs, but aren't most color photographs of cockatiels charming? Decent photographs are insufficient criteria to distinguish a book on birds. The book is written in a boring style that reads like, `look, here are my pets, aren't they great?' The book lacks focus and unsuccessfully attempts to cover too much material. There are promising introductory sections intended for readers that have never owned a bird before where instructions on making `first contact' without terrorizing the cockatiel are given. However, just a few pages later there is a large section on breeding birds. Surely it's unwise for a novice who wants a tame, loveable pet bird to delve into breeding at the same time? If the author had focused on one area, such as a guidebook for the new bird owner while avoided irrelevant distractions, I might have been able to suggest this book.

This book was wonderful! The photos are so inspirational and it gives you quick and easy ideas for setting up a winter garden. This book is truly motivational in getting you out in the yard at a time of year that you aren't likely to do so. This book is perfect for the beginning gardener who wants to know the In's and Out's of seasonal gardening. It may be a little elementary for those of you who are not so "green" to your garden, but it will still offer some beautiful, inexpensive ideas.

This is a great gardening book to own. It has two handy charts, "working winter diary" which lists seasonal tasks and "winter-flowering guide" which lists 4 - 8 names of winter annuals, bulbs, perennials, climbers (!) and shrubs and their growing zones. It has many color illustrations with descriptions and a good Table of Contents and Index. A few of the flowers mentioned are not illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Satisfying Fable Ever Told.......2004-02-14

This book written by Moacyr Scliar can be hard to find. I happened to come across it by accident when browsing books at the bookstore. The moderately popular book, "Max and the Cats", attracted me but it appeared too short for me. I wanted something more substantial to read. So, I searched for other books and this one was the other novel available. All other novels by Scliar are out-of-print. You can however get his other books probably through another library if your library does not own it.

It would be unfair to go beyond the description of the novel. So, I will start with the main character, Guedali Tartakowsky, who is a centaur born into a normal Jewish family. Amazingly, his family tries everything so that he fits into their small community. There are clashes with other people as Guedali wants to escape the safety of his family to meet others. It may seem a little mystical and ridiculous. But, Guedali is not so unlike everyone else who must find himself by living on his own. Many of the qualities in Guedali shows how much more human than us. He may have hooves but his emotions and longing to be accepted and thoughts about growing up normal.

Our reaction to deformities resonates strongly in today's society. If we could change things like remove a large mold, then would it significantly change our life for the better? In most cases, the answer is yes and who knows if the mold was malignant. But, what if it is not so bad and everyone around doesn't mind it. Would you risk changing it for other people who feel uncomfortable? That may be a complete simplification of Guedali's problem but you see where I am going...

So many issues are addressed about knowing yourself. What makes you happy? How do you deal with matters of your identity as a Jew? Who are really your friends or enemies? How does society deal with such deformities? Do other people with this deformity handle daily situations? Scliar deals with all of these issues with a good balance between humor and seriousness. This version is a good translation and no real problems in reading this English print.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-09-09

I read Scliar's columns in the newspapers regularly, but this was the first of his novels that I read. Scliar has recently been accepted to the ABL (Brazilian Academy of Literature) and while reading about him I came across several people's opinions on this book saying it was one of his best work. I can't really compare it to any other book he wrote, however I can say that this story kept me interested from beginning to end. The interesting thing is how the character tries so hard to fit into society, in spite of his "handicap" which cannot be easily hidden. I kept thinking about how I would react if I were in his situation, with the same "problem". When you think that nothing else will happen, there's a nice twist in the end. This is a great book. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A magical masterpiece of Brazilian literature.......2001-05-01

"The Centaur in the Garden" is a superb novel by Brazilian writer Moacyr Scliar. The text has been translated from Portuguese into English by Margaret A. Neves. This brilliant fantasy describes the life of Guedali Tartakovsky, who is born to a Russian Jewish family that has emigrated to Brazil. The family is shocked when, at the baby's birth, they discover that he is a centaur: a being who is human from the waist up, but who possesses a horse's four-legged body below.

The novel's hero thus enters the world marked as an outsider. As his life unfolds, we see his quest to educate himself, to embrace his Jewish identity, to experience sex, to find love, and ultimately to determine his place in the world. Along the way are many stunning surprises--for both Guedali and the reader.

"Centaur" seems to me to exemplify the concept of "magical realism." The book deftly blends elements of fantasy, science fiction, and social satire. Scliar explores many types of relationship: between European and Native American, Jew and Gentile, man and woman, parent and child. This is a deeply moving, truly brilliant novel by one of the most extraordinary voices in Latin American literature.

5 out of 5 stars We, brazilians, have indeed great writers.......2000-07-20

The story is about a person who is born as a centaur. It may seem foolish and nonsense, but it isn't. The book deals with the problems any "human being" half hoarse would sufer. Telling you more of the story would take the enjoyment out.

It is great: the reader will imidiatively see that he is a centaur himself. How? The society demands us to be padronized, identical with each other, but we just can't and shouldn't! We are different, no matter how we try being as our neighbor, in other words, each of us are centaurs in same way. We must have our diferencies (unfortunetlty, some people want to be the same as the "majority", the so called "normal people"). That's the meaning of the book.

(You americans should try reading books from authors of my country. Then you'll find out how rich and great our literature is.)

5 out of 5 stars Simply put: amazing!.......1999-12-12

What a book. That's one of those books that keep you turning the pages rapidly, until you get to the end. But then you just have to take another look at the first pages, and before you know it you are in the middle of a second round. The main character tells his story retrospectively, starting from the night a winged horse flew over his parents house at the time of his birth - a Jewish Centaur somewhere in Brazil. His parents are terrified at first, but afterwards he is grown as a regular... well, centaur. It's no use even trying to tell anything of this strange, fascinating book. Two things, however, are certain: this is a book that you will be thinking about for a long, long time, and this is NOT a children's book. Read it. If I can't convince you... well, imagine yourself living your life without knowing that "One hundred years of solitude" existed. What a loss.

                                                        Book Description

This book is an investigation into the sphere of production and use of two related bilingual magical handbooks found as part of a larger collection of magical and alchemical manuscripts around 1828 in the hills surrounding Luxor, Egypt. Both handbooks, dating to the Roman period, contain an assortment of recipes for magical rites in the Demotic and Greek language. The library which comprises these two handbooks is nowadays better known as the Theban Magical Library.

The book traces the social and cultural milieu of the composers, compilers and users of the extant spells through a combination of philology, sociolinguistics and cultural analysis. To anybody working on Greco-Roman Egypt, ancient magic, and bilingualism this study is of significant importance.

Readership: All those interested in ancient magic, social and cultural history of Greco-Roman Egypt, bilingualism, intellectual history, as well as Egyptologists, classicists, historians of religion.

                                                            Book Description

Lose the Guilt, Love Your Instincts

If the latest “breakthrough” child-development theory, parenting technique, or child-appropriate diet makes you worry or groan (or just want to lie down for a nap), it’s time to make way for Momfidence! Paula Spencer, parenting expert and mother of four, provides refreshing, down-to-earth proof that most of the business of raising confident, healthy children involves nothing more complicated that trusting your instincts, using common sense, and above all, hanging on to your humor.

                                                            Momfidence! is:

•Using “perfect” only to describe such wonders as a ripe peach, a cloudless day at the beach, or a husband who does diapers and dinner. . . It has no application whatsoever in describing motherhood.

•Recognizing that there are appropriate times and places for lying, yelling, threatening, bribing, and saying “I told you so”

•Sending yourself to time-out—preferably with chocolate and/or your spouse

•Being completely amnesiac about the day’s exasperating transgressions when you peek in your children’s bedrooms at night and watch them sleep

Based on her popular Woman’s Day and Parenting columns, Momfidence! explains how obsessing less and winging it more can keep you sane—and your kids healthy and happy. It’s a hilarious look at “perfect motherhood” that cuts parents a long-overdue break by reminding us that we’re not the amateurs here—we’re all experts, too.

I bought this book for all four of my sisters-in-law, I loved it so much. There are so many sources of guilt for today's mom: am I doing what's best for my children, am I involved enough, am I keeping up with other moms and what they are doing? Paula Spencer's answer is, don't worry about what other people think you should be doing. Do what works for your kids, and what works for you. Life was much simpler when we were growing up. Why does child rearing have to be so complicated now? Let the kids play. Let their imaginations lead how they spend their time. Spend less time carting kids around, to and from various activities, and just be a family. At home. With free time.

Did Paula live inside my head as she wrote this? THE BEST CHILD-RELATED BOOK I HAVE READ...and I've read a lot. I have ten-month old son and a whole lot of anxiety about being a good mom to him. This book healed my anxious soul. I don't know how else to put it. A MUST-READ.

5 out of 5 stars Parenting books from A- Z.......2007-05-02

Okay... so here's how I see it. As a mother of five, I have prided myself on my seeminly endless efforts to become the "greatest mom ever"
If you were to look at my parenting section in my books shelf it would look something like this:
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING, WHAT TO EAT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING, WHAT TO EXPECT THE TODDLER YEARS,BABYWISE 1 AND 2, SO YOU WANT TO RAISE A BOY, LOVE AND LOGIC MAGIC FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD,THE STRONG WILLED CHILD, THE EXPLOSIVE CHILD, SIBLINGS WITHOUT RIVALRY, LOVE AND LOGIC-WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD LEAVES YOU SPEECHLESS, HOW TO BEHAVE SO YOU'RE CHILDREN WILL TOO, SUPERNANNY... AND FINALLY MOMFIDENCE. (plus about ten others stuffed in between.)
Do you see the pattern here? It wasn't until Momfidence that it finally all made sense. We make being a parent way too hard! The author's tell it like it is style of writing is so refreshing and funny. It's an easy read that any woman can relate too. Although I think it is funnier for a woman who has born and reared children.

This book was a breath of fresh air! It is a laugh-out-loud, fun book to read -- I found myself recounting many parts of the book to friends and family. We Moms can be so hard on ourselves sometimes, and this book was a great reminder that if we just relax and enjoy our kids they will turn out just fine! It's also a great confidence booster to realize that you're not alone -- the craziness involved with raising kids is something EVERY parent goes through.

I could relate to just about every chapter. I love how Paula makes the guilt ...just go away! I only wish I had gotten this before the birth of my first son (I now have 2 boys!)so that I could have had someone on my shoulder like Paula telling me I didn't need to be Super Mom - it's true - an Oreo won't kill you! Gain your Momfidence - get this book and pass it on to any Mom or Mom-To-Be that you know!

                                                              Book Description

Born to a Jewish father and black mother who divorce before she is two, Oreo grows up in Philadelphia with her maternal grandparents while her mother tours with a theatrical troupe. Soon after puberty, Oreo heads for New York with a pack on her back to search for her father; but in the big city she discovers that there are dozens of Sam Schwartzes in the phone book, and Oreo's mission turns into a wickedly humorous picaresque quest. The ambitious and playful narrative challenges accepted notions of race, ethnicity, culture, and even the novelistic form itself.

Kids get bombarded at every angle with the message that junk food is fun, kid-friendly, and harmless. Now it's educational? I would run, not walk, from any book like this. If you want your kid to count food, at least pick something nutritious. There's no need to line Nabisco's pockets at the expense of your children's health. They'll get the junk food message everywhere else--let's at least try to keep it out our children's books.

Oreo cookies for adults who can make their own decisions about eating heavily processed foods loaded with sugar and trans-fats is one thing, but for kids? There is enuf pressure in the world for kids to eat terrible things for them... the junk food industry should stay out of kids books.

The words are simple and concise so they can hold his attention, the illustrations are so beautiful and so detailed, you can even see the real design on the Oreo cookies! Colours and textures are painstakingly and lovingly rendered, and an easy metered rhyme beats out the perfect tune for a read-along. The cover says it all: "The perfect book for the parent with major challenges but little time or energy to read a bigger book." Martha Kate Downey has written a wonderful book that reads quickly and is infused with humor -- which is exactly what is needed. Her advice is light-hearted, yet serious, and is presented in an off-beat and refreshing visual format at times. As a tired, stressed out parent, it helped me to take some deep breaths and regain some perspective.

Martha Kate Downey, the mother of a child who has been given a laundry list of neurological diagnoses, has written a soothing, gentle and helpful volume for parents and caregivers who are just learning about and adjusting to life with a special needs child. The book's focus is on special needs kids who have been diagnosed with neurological or autistic spectrum disorders such as Asperger Syndrome, HFA or Tourette Syndrome, but certainly not exclusive to that cluster of differences (or "flavors" as Downey would say). While not a scholarly or research-oriented work, those who are struggling to help a special needs child and communicate with teachers, doctors, counselors, social workers, etc., will find Downey's work full of practical, take-a-deep-breath advice from someone who has been through the process from discovery to diagnoses to problem solving. Even a parent who has been coping with a child's special needs diagnosis for several years will find valuable reminders about the importance of taking care of his or her own needs, as well as strategies for coping with the changing needs of a growing, special needs child. As comforting and satisfying as an Oreo cookie (or two) on a bad day!

Memoirs of an OREO: A Social History explores—through the eyes and experience of the author—the meaning of this label, “OREO,” and its correlation to the mood and vitality of social change in the U.S. during most of the 20th century.

This story, however, is not a lament. It is a very unique and illuminating story personal story linked to a steadily evolving social climate as the author grew up in the family of a Methodist Minister, experienced World War II both in Europe and in the Pacific, and led a professional life as an educator and counselor. In an entertaining way these memoirs portray his upbringing, which was protective and shielding and at the same time enriching with regard to influences of the dominant culture. And it tells how his life experiences gave him diverse perspectives and insights—which were sometimes at odds with the black mainstream—on social, political, economic, racial and cultural relationships. His profound associations with Black and multiracial church congregations, for example, made him sensitive to the strengths and weaknesses of both – and aware of their contributions to the best and the worst of society’s conditions. Through his intriguing stories and delightful anecdotes he examines the idiosyncratic needs of individuals and groups as they create and/or resist social change.

He writes, “As I explore the causes and effects of racism in this way, this story, Memoirs of an OREO: A Social History, will hopefully be a very positive message for every reader. My purpose is to assure the probability that the unparalleled power and wealth of our society will be shared for the benefit of everyone.”
