Book Description

Everyone knew Len Dreyer, a handyman for hire in the Park near Niniltna, Alaska, but no one knew anything else about him. Even Kate Shugak, who was planning to ask him to help build a small second cabin on her property, knew him. But she, the Park's unofficial P.I., seems to have known less about him than anyone. When Len Dreyer's body is discovered, frozen solid, in the path of a receding glacier with a hole from a shotgun blast in his chest, no one even noticed that he was missing for months. Alaska State Trooper Jim Chopin asks Kate to help him dig into Dreyer's background, in the hope of finding some motive for his murder. She takes the case, mindful of the need for gainful employment as she copes with her responsibility for Johnny, the teenage boy in her care and a constant reminder of his father, her dead lover. Little does she imagine that by trying to provide for him she just might put him right in the path of danger.

3 out of 5 stars The s(t)eamy side of Alaska.......2007-03-02

Because I'm planning to visit Alaska this summer, I've been immersing myself in tour guides, literature, and videos about our northernmost state. This is the first book written by Alaskan native Dana Stabenow that I have read. I had hoped to pick up on some local color in the pages of this book. The color I picked up on was mostly blue as I found myself learning more about Kate Shugak's love life than about Alaskan landscapes.

While I admit to having a narrow view on the author's writing style, this being the only book of hers I have read, I found her focus to be much more on her characters than on setting. Place seemed to be only incidental to the story, a glacier nothing more than a convenient place to stash a corpse. Alas for Alaska, Ms. Stabenow is no Tony Hillerman.

Frankly, I prefer fiction in which setting plays a more prominent role. I was also disappointed in the ending. I will probably not be reading any more books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars A Winner!.......2007-01-05

Top-notch author and another winning story. Alaska is featured and described with accuracy and affection. Just one of the many stories in this land of mystery and challenges.

5 out of 5 stars A Grave Denied.......2007-01-05

Absolutely loved it. Love the characters and the wonderful insites into the land and the people. Dana Stabenow is a wonderful author.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Stabenow.......2005-09-21

Kate Shugak carries on in the Park. Another great book.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Alaskan murder-mystery.......2005-01-18

Dana Stabenow's A Grave Denied proves to be a highly entertaining and intriguing murder mystery novel. The author who lives in Alaska, gives the story a great Alaskan flavor as her story unfold about a man who everyone knows but didn't know, was found murdered with a shotgun blast into his chest. Stabenow's heroine, Kate Shugak seek out this mystery while dodging some blows herself.

Since this book is part of the Kate Shugak series, the characters in the book were already established and set-up was pretty easy. The author moves the story well at a good pace and its a definite page turner. The book is a quick read. Well written, prose is good and mystery keep you going until the very end.

Overall, a pretty good murder mystery novel with a great Alaskan flavor.

(Trivial Stuff: If Kate Shugak really wanted to rebuilt her library, she would definitely go to Title Wave Used Books instead of Twice Told Used Bookstore. Also, initial suspects are house in Anchorage Jail instead of Cook Inlet Pre-Trial Facility.)

1 out of 5 stars How was this published?.......2004-02-17

Perhaps I bought a beta version of this novel (After all, the cover fell off before I started reading, and the teaser page breaks off mid-sentence). That would explain the preponderance of rookie mistakes in a veteran writer's novel.

This book is phenomenally bad. It is weak writing like this which gives science fiction a bad image. The worst is Philip Jose Farmer has written many good books and stories. Where did he go wrong?

To begin, the story centers on a form of psychology that uses Farmer's World of Tiers series to resolve personality problems in teenagers (This is apparently based on an actual test study). But Farmer's first misstep is in letting his characters slavishly praise his literary genius--over and over. Second, the dialogue is unbelievable. When father and son are arguing, they take time to list as many nasty names as they can come up with (e.g. "you drunken bum, hopeless welfare case, parasite, loafer, loser"). This doesn't display anger. It displays bizarre and casual forethought. Third, while the pocket universes are a fascinating concept the description is awkwardly done. Too many things in Anathema, the first of several worlds explored by Orc, smell and taste "like rotten potatoes," and having Orc rhapsodise (aka explain to the reader) that the kamanbur are a genetically engineered mix of dog, monkey, spider, and termite should be unnecessary.

Then there is the overall confusing sensation of whether or not _Red Orc's Rage_ is in fact supposed to be the long-awaited WOT book that every character seems to wonder about while seething irony. It is very disconcerting to read about Farmer writing about a character thinking about Farmer himself. As with much of this book, it could be clever, but it hasn't quite gotten there.

A great addition to the world of tiers.Philp jose farmer is truly one of the best.I could almost see the things he was describing. An oringal book!

For a book called 'Knock Out the Fat', it is amazing how many recipes are included that have high amounts of fat and calories. Do not buy this book for low fat recipes. Buy it for recipes to use on indoor grill.

I am enjoying using the recipes and tips about grilling. The recipes are easy to prepare and can be cooked on any type of grill whether indoor or outdoor.

There is an excellent variety of all kinds of meat, poultry and fish recipes, also vegetarian because sometimes I just feel like making something different.

I am so glad I bought this book.

                                  5 out of 5 stars surprizingly excellent!.......2003-04-14

I bought this after I bought the grill. Having tried the recipes that came with the george foreman grill and finding them excellent, I decided to invest in a whole george forman cookbook.

The marinades are excellent! Many have few ingredients and maximum taste. While they are helpful if you have the grill they are excellent even if you don't. Marinades are a wonderful way to grill, in general. Some of them lend themselves even to panfrying, depending on the cut of meat or poulty. While you cant use bone-in meats in the GF grill, you can use these recipes with bone-in cuts and use an alternate cooking method (grilling, broiling or baking for chicken).

This was a big surprize! At first I thought it was going to gimick-y and just a cookbook capitalizing on the GF name. But it is a *study* cookbook in its own right. excellent.

4 out of 5 stars A TASTY ONE FROM GEORGE.......2002-12-29

With this book, George Foreman demonstrated that his strong hands, which are famous for delivering painful punches, are capable of delivering delicious dishes. Cherie Calbom was his 'corner-man' in this fat-fight.
This cookbook is very practical in outlook: employing a step-by-step method. It explained the fundamental routines of tabling low-fat grills (and barbecue). It has a well-balanced approach: providing good tuition on both recipes and their healthiest mode of preparation.
The book will bring fun to your kitchen, and smile on your table. However, if you are interested in continuous experiments, its 176 pages may not be enough as to fulfill all your grilling desires. Support it with a more extensive cookbook for the best result.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A horse's horseman.......2007-01-04

This is Colonel Podhajsky's story of his life, told in context of his relationships with his horses. Sometimes people tend to think that some of the currently popular "natural horsemandship" principles are either new, or apply only to western riding. However, Colonel Podhajsky talks in terms of true partnership and understanding with your horse from the perspective of classical European Dressage, and of course pre-dates the current popular "methods." Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Pat and Linda Parelli, and feel that they, and others who are popular today, have done a lot to improve the lot of horses. They have also found a way to help the rest of us learn how to achieve the sort of relationships with our horses that Colonel Podhajsky describes in this book. This book is the story of a true master in every sense of the word. Don't miss it!!

This inspirational book is truly a classic, as are all of Podhajsky's writings. A timeless, enlightening book which should be read not only by dressage enthusiasts, but by all who are interested in the partnership between horse and rider.

Confused by all the hoopla around the "Natural Horsemanship" gurus these days? Find out what is the real thing by reading Alois Podhajsky's "My Horses, My Teachers." In fact, this book could be a sourcebook in Human Relationship, or Self-Help categories as well as any equine category. AP writes passionately about his relationships with his own gurus, the many horses who were lucky enough to cross paths with this kind, gentle, patient master of horsemanship. Reading this book one feels as if these stories are being told face to face with this beacon of horsemasters, sitting in his living room on comfortable couches. This is a must read for ANY horse enthusiast!

This is a intriguing book. An insight into to the man who managed to keep the Spanish Riding School going during World War II and convinve Patton to save the breeder stock at the end of the war. He speaks of the horses that he has riden and trained and what they have taught him! I have enjoyed the book, but some may find it a bit too intellectual. Those who ride, love horses or are interested in the behavior of horses will find this an most intersting and entertaining read!

5 out of 5 stars The Power to Move...with Collection, of course!.......2005-06-15

I really enjoyed this book, from the perspective of an avid reader and a horseman. The points about the different horses were wonderfully thought out. There wasn't much stuffing - what he said was of use. I found myself saying, "oh yes! That's just what Darque does! I must try this method!" or "OH! This is the REAL Alois Podhajsky!"
So many authors who write a some what autobiographical book like this are prone to pride...in a case such as this, rightful pride...a pride in accomplishment. I don't think one mention of himself over the horses or others who helped to forward his career (in bad and good ways) ever occurred. Even when speaking...uh, writing...about his experience in London with Neapolitano Africa, he does not once tell what he did, the little things he could have done to reward that audience with a spectacular performance, one that was announced to be the best ride of that year's Olympics. And not one mention of himself.... There is a memory in my head that this form of honesty, not humbleness, is GREATNESS.

                                      Read for yourself.

There is treat upon treat, lavished with praise by a lot of contemporary artists, who share many readers’ delight in what Walotsky has accomplished over the years. Those funky posters from the 1960s...Many reproductions here from a long career, spanning many book covers, magazine appearances, some real fine treats.”—True Review.

                                                        Book Description

Frederick Douglass, born a slave, educated himself, escaped, and made himself one of the greatest leaders in American history. His brilliant anti-slavery speeches were so fiercely intelligent, and so startlingly eloquent, that many people didn't believe he had been a slave. To prove them wrong, Douglass decided to write his own story. His autobiographical narratives stunned the world, and have shocked, moved, and inspired readers ever since. Here, complete for the first time in one authoritative volume, are the three powerful and gripping stories, now recognized as classics of American writing. Fascinating firsthand accounts of slavery and abolitionism, John Brown and Abraham Lincoln, Civil War, Reconstruction, and the emerging struggle for civil rights, they are above all the inspiring story of a self-made American: a slave who became adviser to the President, minister to Haiti, and the most influential black American of the nineteenth century.

Frederick Douglass (1818?-1895) was the greatest African American leader of the Nineteenth Century. He was born a slave on the Eastern Shore in Maryland and grew up on plantations on the Eastern Shore with several years in Baltimore. He was a physically powerful, highly intelligent, and spirited youth and developed quickly a hatred of the slave system. As a slave, he taught himself to read and write, and learned the art of public speaking from the church and from a book of orations popular at the time that feel into his hands. He escaped from slavery at the age of 20 and moved to New Bedford,Massachusetts. He became part of the Abolitionist Movement and achieved fame as a public speaker. He became a newspaper editor and writer. During the Civil War, he assisted in the recuritment of black troops. He met President Lincoln on several occasions and became a great admirer. In later years, Douglass was aligned with the conservative "stalwart" wing of the Republican party and continued to speak out for the rights of African-Americans, to oppose (somewhat belatedly) the end of Reconstruction, and to work for the life of the spirit and the mind.

Frederick Douglass wrote three autobiographies which are given in this volume. The first, shortest, and best was written in 1845, seven years after Douglass had escaped from slavery. It tells in graphic and unforgettable terms the story of Douglass' life as a slave, the growth of the spirit of freedom in himself. and the early part of his life as a free man in New Bedford.

The second autobiography was written in 1855. It repeats much of the earlier story and describes Douglass's visit to Great Britain. A higlight of this volume is the Appendix in which Douglass gives the reader excerpts from several of his speeches, including his perhaps most famous speech "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July."

Douglass wrote his third autobiography in 1888 and edited it substantially in 1893. It describes Douglass's relationship with Abraham Lincoln and John Brown. I also enjoyed the section of the book in which Douglass describes his trip to England, Italy, and Egypt near the end of his life. It is highly intelligent, perceptive and reflective travel writing. There are also excerpts in this final autobiography from Douglass's speeches and letters.

The most striking incident in all three volumes is Douglass's story of how he stood up for himself and became in his own eyes a man of dignity and courage. Douglass had been sent for a year to live with a small farmer named Covey who had a reputation for breaking the sprit of strong-willed slaves. Covey whipped Douglass unmercifully for the first six months. Then, after a whipping which left Douglass scared and weak for several days (he ran back to his old master who ordered him back to Covey) Douglass fought back. Covey attempted to whip Douglass and Douglass resisted. The two men fought hand-to-hand for hours. Douglass could not assume the offensive in the fight (it was enough to resist at all) but more than held his ground and had the better of it. Covey at last walked off and never whipped Douglass again. This incident is strikingly told in each autobiography and marks the moment when Douglass showed he could stand up for himself and not have the spirit of a slave. It is inspiring and it grounded his actions for the rest of his life.

There is much in these books that transcends the resistance against American slavery, utterly important as that is. We have, as I have tried to explain, in this book the voice of personal freedom and self-determination which is something every person must learn and undestand for him or herself in deciding how to live. In addition,I get the impression that as Douglass aged he became increasingly committed to the life of the mind and the spirit. This is apparent from his writing and from his interest in travel, in European high culture, art, literature, and music. Douglass learned the meaning for freedom. He tried to devote himself to matters of the spirit in addition to his lifelong quest to improve the lot of the former slave. I think there is still a great deal to be learned here.

Douglass had much to say about the nature of American freedom and democracy. He loved and had faith in them, in spite of the horrible stain of slavery. Here is a wonderful observation from the third autobiography in which Douglass' describes his activities during the Presidential campaign of 1888.

"I left the discussion of the tariff to my young friend Morris, while I spoke for justice and humanity....I took it to be the vital and animating principle of the Republican party. I found the people more courageous than their party leaders. What the leaders were afraid to teach, the people were brave enough and glad enough to learn. I held that the soul of the nation was in this question, and that the gain of all the gold in the world would not compensate for the loss of the nation's soul. National honor is the soul of the nation, and when this is lost all is lost. ... As with an individual, so too with a nation, there is a time when it may properly be asked "What doth it profit to gain the whole world and therby lose one's soul?"

There is a spirit and a wisdom in Douglass that still has much to teach.

As a man of the Nineteenth Century, Douglass tells us little in his autobiographies of his personal life. Upon his escape from slavery, Douglass married a free, uneducated black woman. Upon her death, Douglass married a white woman, which (as we see briefly in the book) caused shock among American whites and blacks alike. We also see little of Douglass' relationship to his children. The reader who would like to learn more about Douglass' personal life needs to read a biography, such as William McFeeley's "Frederick Douglass" (1891)

Douglass' autobiographies are are precious work of American literature and a testimony to the free human spirit.

5 out of 5 stars one of the founding American novels.......2000-05-30

Once you read Douglass's narrative, you will be surprised that Douglass learned enough to be able to write the first narrative written by an uneducated slave. This is one of the most moving narratives you can read -- I challenge any reader to read this and not understand the irony of the white people supressing black people's accomplishments for hundreds of years. The story of Fredrick Douglas in inspiring on many different levels. Once you read it, any reader will understand why this is mandatory reading in any American literature course. It is impossible to understand life after the Civil War without reading this moving, touching novel about how a slave learned how to read and write. Douglass's autobiography is a great literary achievement which should be savored by all who read it both as a historical and literary document.

In spite of the hardships of slavery, Frederick Douglass continued his fight for freedom. His dynamic oratory and leadership helped him to move barriers for all people. This self educated man rose to great prominence to serve as a testament to the world that if you have courage, persistence and faith in God, you can achieve anything that you set your mind to. He knew the power of education and the spoken and written word, which is manifested in his creating the NorthStar newspaper to communicate to others. Of course you have to have mortal men who believe in you and your abilities.

I believe that Mr. Gates captures this strength, this conviction and the essence of Mr. Douglass' spirit and his commitment to make a better life for himself and others like him. His dynamic use of the language allows you to feel conviction and essence of Mr. Douglass' concern. It was like listening to Mr. Douglass speak to me through those pages.

I found this book very intriguing and educational. It has something for the world to learn from.

Thanks to Mr. Gates and others for bringing this great American (World) hero to the forefront. We need to know and share in the histor and spiriti of this great man. By the way I was named after Frederick Douglass. I strive to be like him as much as I can. I am still working on my oratory!

Frederick Douglass is a role model for all mankind. He showed us how we can do anything we want in life if we are persistant and have the right attitude. Having nothing in life, not even a chance to become educated, he used every situation as an advantage for himself. He remained positive in adverse situations, had a good work ethic and is a person all races should take lessons from and succeed
