Customer Reviews:
Another terrific Russell Quant mystery.......2007-10-03
This was the third of the Russell Quant mysteries I read. The second one was "Tapas on the Ramblas", which took place on a cruise ship, and as I had just finished a Mediterranean cruise, it was very easy to put myself into the story. Each of the books was a new adventure and this one was another new and exciting adventure. I actually feel like I know personally a lot of the characters, especially Russell. And I've learned so much about a part of Canada that I knew nothing about. When I finished this one I couldn't wait to get on to the next one.The writing is so good.
A Great & Original Mystery Series.......2007-08-23
I was pleasantly suprised by the first book in the Russell Quant mystery series. An intersesting unstereotypical Gay PI as the main character, original plotting w/ plenty of twists & refreshing, interesting locales & characters. I was soon hooked & upon finishing immediately ordered the rest of the books in the series. Highly recomended.
Great debut from Bidulka.......2006-11-14
To make it short, I'll just go through the parts I liked and those I didn't.
Good: The Saskatoon setting, through which I became aquainted with an entire city I would never have though twice about. Had to pull out the big guns (atlas) to see where it was. Being surprised at every metion of Canada being home made me realize that I read way too many USA-centric books. The book is well-written. The amount of introspection came just to the line before snooze fest. The characters are interesting and engaging, although some more than the narrator. The ending more than makes up for the simplistic climax. Russell Quant's little world is a comfortable place to be. If you like a mystery with minimal violence, good style, and a character-driven plot, this is for you.
Bad: The first two big twists, so to speak, were so easy to guess it was almost painful. Being ahead of the detective is frustrating. The author abandoned suspects and, at the end, you know it's going to be one of two people.
The book takes on almost a literature feel to it. It is labled mystery/gay literature. A nice little hybrid. I found it enjoyable and would read more titles in this series.
A Tasty Treat!.......2006-06-14
I have to start by saying I think that Tony Bidulka is handsome and charming. But do I let that prejudice my opinion of his books?
Fortunately, that's not a problem, because Amuse Bouche is just as charming as Tony himself is. It's evocative and well-written; it made me want to jump on a plane and head right for France, where his first big case takes rookie private eye Russell Quant.
The mystery is intriguing, and I love that Russell keeps a file he calls "red herrings," which are there to tantalize and mislead the reader as well, yet are cleverly wrapped up by the end of the book.
I highly recommend Amuse Bouche!
Yummmmmmm.......2006-05-30
Amuse Bouche are little tastes served at the beginning of the meal - but this thriller by Canadian author Anthony Bidulka is a full and hearty meal that will leave you wanting more. Meet Russell Quant and his very real and human cast of friends and foes - someone for eveyone.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource for the Tolkien fan!.......2003-12-16
George Beahm's new book takes a long overdue look at the world of JRR Tolkien: not the world of Middle Earth itself, but rather the extraordinary industry which has grown up around the writer's creation. Upon perusing this book the Tolkien fan, both expert and novice, will find a wealth of information regarding just how much is available to them. Beahm provides clear and concise reviews of all manner of Tolkien books, art, games, DVDs, collectibles and merchandise; and provides details of various rare editions which the true fan may want to track down.
All this is backed up with in-depth interviews with the best of the Tolkien artists, including Michael Whelan, Tim Kirk and Colleen Doran. Indeed, Doran provides a host of new drawings especially for this book - and magnificent they are too!
For the Tolkien fan wondering where to go next, this book is a must.
An enduringly popular literary saga.......2003-12-13
The Essential J.R.R. Tolkien Sourcebook by George Beahm is a superbly presented, fan-centered guide to the fantasy world of Middle Earth, a magical land originally envisioned by celebrated author J.R.R. Tolkien in his famous trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" and his other thematically related writings. Featuring information about Lord of the Rings merchandise and collectibles, books about Tolkien, computer software, Tolkien-themed websites, and other online Tolkien related resources, The Essential J.R.R. Tolkien Sourcebook is highly recommended (indeed, an essential reference) for anyone seriously interested in learning more about the fan-culture surrounding this epic and enduringly popular literary saga.
A Must-Have for Tolkien Fans.......2003-12-07
George Beahm's love for Tolkien's work shines through every page of The Essential J.R.R. Tolkien Sourcebook.
Beahm starts with the Lord of the Rings books themselves and their various editions, from "the most elegant edition" to "the cleverest packaging." From there he branches out to chronicle related works by Tolkien and about Tolkien and LotR, and of course he examines the visual adaptations. He is both reverent and critical. He has harsh words, for instance, for the "full-screen" version of The Fellowship of the Ring, which is "severely cropped to fit the conventional television screen," and warns that the binding of one lavish edition "will not hold up after repeated readings." Audio adaptations, printed products, book- and movie-related collectibles, ring replicas, games and miniatures, websites...these and more fall under Beahm's Sauron-like all-seeing eye.
Then there's Chapter 11, my favorite, that delves into Tolkien-inspired art. Illustrations by Colleen Doran, Tim Kirk, David Wenzel, Steve Hickman, and Donato Giancola enhance an informative chapter on Tolkien artists from the Hildebrandts to Michael Whelan. Doran contributes a number of lovely and delicate full-page illustrations to the book and also provides spot art and illustrated chapter headings, elegant touches that give evidence to Beahm's genuine love for the subject matter.
For fans of Middle Earth, George Beahm's The Essential J.R.R. Tolkien Sourcebook is just that...essential.

A very good end for a great series(or it's not the end?).......2000-07-05
Khichaka and Anana are absolutely unique:a goddess so human,a human so godlike. The pocket universe idea is wonderful, provided it's not used for making the heroes wander pointlessly from one zany universe to another. And the solution is so bizarre,so farmerish, one would say,but very humane.I only think that the petty wars between the immortal supergods who made the World of Tiers made me wonder about the desirability of immortality. And what happened to Wolff and Chryseis,by the way?

License to Grill follows the Thrill of the Grill, the award winning cookbook Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby wrote in 1990 that was a breakthrough in making cooking over a fire a gourmet kind of thing. License to Grill stands fully on its own as an updated manifesto. It provides all you need to know about equipment, fire building, what to cook, and how to do it. In this, their fifth collaboration, the flippant, expert, creative team of Schlesinger and Willoughby have a grand time. Their recipes, shouting with flavor and simple to prepare, draw you into the fun. The book starts with soups and salads, then carries on to beef, poultry, and lots of seafood and veggie dishes. Sections on Hobo Packs (cooked in foil), skewer recipes, and desserts are appealing. The chapter on barbecuing and smoke roasting is outstanding. Would that the type was easier to read, but that's the only fault to be found with this zesty book.

Go to Canada.......2006-07-12
This isn't a review, but a tip for those that wanted to get the book "Grilled to Perfection" by the host of Licence to Grill, Rob Rainford. Go to: www.amazon.ca This is amazons' Canadian website. That's what I did. Will post a review on here when I get it. Happy grilling:)
Well rounded grilling guide.......2006-05-09
This is an excellent book to get, when you want to go to the next level of grilling. Reading it is a hoot, you can almost hear him talking his way through the book. What I really like is that this book is not just about grilling, but also includes lots of complimentary dishes that go well with it. Check out the last page for the pie, you will see what I mean. Still trying to balance out the timing on how to run two grills, but I'll get it down. Best part I really like is the added commentary on what dishes to serve together, great choices!!
Not by Robert Rainford!.......2006-02-19
I was looking for a cookbook by Robert Rainford the chef and host of the show License to Grill. Typing in his name pulled up this book. Me, silly person, did not pay attention to the other name listed. I figured Christopher Schlesinger was a co-author. Duh! Anyway, if you're looking for a book by Robert Rainford this is not it. Boy was my husband disappointed!
Send it to a friend!.......2003-05-31
Great for purests - charcoal only. I've tried almost everything in the book and everyone that visits the grill on the patio raves about the dishes! I've passed this book along to others with the same results.
Excellent All-Around Grilling Reference.......2001-05-22
This book really lets you take grilling beyond burgers, dogs and steaks -- even if you have limited experience. The recipes are easy to follow, and the course combinations allow preparation of complete meals that work well together. Every time I have referred to this book, I have found at least one (and usually more than one) recipe that was right on target. It is limited on color photos, but I have not found this to be a problem since the text is quite descriptive and well-written. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
A single city woman meets Mr. Right-he has amber eyes and a wily heart. There's only one catch . . . he has four legs and a tail.
Relatively indifferent to the natural world, allergic to dogs, and happily independent, writer Louise Bernikow never had a pet and knew nothing about caring for one. But one day while running along Manhattan's Hudson River, she came across an abandoned boxer. He had a gimpy leg and a dim past, but Bernikow instantly, bewilderingly, did the one thing her mother always warned her not to do-she brought the strange male home.
Here is the comical and offbeat story of their first year together. Libro, as she comes to call him (for "book," in Spanish), introduces her to the curious world of dog runs and dog people, and to a local dive where the bartender pulls pints from the tap and dog biscuits from the drawer. Bernikow, in turn, introduces Libro to the eccentric neighbors and to life as a media hound. When they meet a handsome man and his equally handsome dachshund,
life takes an unexpected turn for both of them.
Wonderfully written and captivating to the last, this is a remarkable tale of companionship.

Kicking the Dog.......2007-10-04
I love dog books. I bought this one on the basis of a quick glance at a few of the sentences. The writing looked clean, unsentimental. I don't require much in a good dog story.
My mate, my dog, and I went away to a cabin for a few days and I looked forward to indulging in this book. There, blithely reading along, doing my best to ignore the author's self-centered narrative, waiting for the part where the dog redeems her and she finds herself and becomes less Manhattan-shallow, suddenly she makes a confession that makes me ill. She comes home one day to find the dog in the bathroom, where she sends him when he is bad. Apparently, he knows he's done something wrong. She goes into her office where she finds her datebook chewed to shreds. Furious, she storms back to the bathroom and kicks the dog, "hard."
Ugh. Even thinking of it now it's like I've been kicked in the stomach. How can you kick a *dog*? How, especially, can you kick a dog that you've already seen cower from past abuse?
It's great that she confessed, and I hope she never did it again. But I didn't stick around to find out.
I tried. I tried to pick up the book I thought I was going to be reading and keep on. But it made me sick, and finally, I realized I couldn't keep reading a book written by a woman who abused an abused dog. I don't care if it was just once. If you kick a dog who already knows it's done something wrong, a dog that has already cowered from past abuse, there's something wrong with you and you should not be owning dogs, much less writing about them.
If you want to read a good dog book, there are plenty of others. Pick one of those instead.
His face caught my eye.......2006-09-24
Loved this book, being a new yorker myself and currently on boxer number 3, (no not all at the same time) I could totally relate to this delightful story. I saw his face on the cover while browsing in the bookstore, snapped it up and couldn't put it down. When I'm on the upper west side, I actually find myself looking for him, or at least hoping to bang into him. My little brown angel would probably like it too! Very nice read.
Single female meets mysterious male.......2004-03-18
A non-dog type woman, Louise Bernikow, jogs through Central Park one unassuming day and comes upon a crowd complete with police cars. Normally Louise jogs past such things but some mysterious force drew her to investigate. Through these events, she winds up caring for a dog that has been mistreated and left tied to the tree.
As the book unfolds, the dog from the "wrong side of the tracks" turns out to be a refined gentleman who keeps revealing clues about his past. This "gentledog", Libro, aids the lady author in healing from past and present relationships with boyfriends. Libro helps Louise move beyond her comfort zone - way beyond - try new things, and venture into new relationships with people from all walks of life.
The book starts well and unfortunately slows down in the middle. The end was a disappointment because clues about the dog's past become very intriguing and it is not explored further. Overall, this book helped in understanding someone who is not from the Midwest, who is a non-dog person in a big city, and who has not a clue in handling dogs. It does provide insight in the difficulties of having a dog in the city. Who would have thought of walking a dog down four flights of stairs just for him to use the restroom!
Despite the differences of raising a dog in a city versus a rural or suburban area, the common ground with dogs is the impact they have on humans. If we let them, they do change our lives for the better.
Stunning example of inter-species love at second sight.......2003-07-01
What an amazingly lovely story, almost like a fairy-tail (excuse the pun) about a sophisticated city lady, who meets and falls in love with a pooch who changes her take on life. She has finally found the unconditional love we don't usually find in our fellow humans. Another stunning example of inter-species communication. Sexy single lady meets Benji. Highly recommended for pet owners, future pet owners, and those who don't know what they're missing!

This book is the most beautiful and informative book I have ever seen on the subject on antique lace. I am a second generation antique textile collector, and this book is truly the best I have ever seen on antique linens and lace.

Book Description
Vibrant, soft, cozy tams are great small projects for busy knitters, and perfect gifts for recipients of all ages. Starting with the basics, knitwear designer Mary Rowe gives instructions for tams of all sizes, using a variety of standard yarns and an array of captivating patterns; she then explains how to create original designs.
Customer Reviews:
Knitted Tams .......2007-05-18
This is a great book for knitting Tams. Mary Rowe describes in detail how to design a tam that is just right for you. All parts of the tam are explained including problem areas and what to avoid.
I appreciate books that give the hows and whys which allow me work with my ideas. The author does provide basic tam instruction and then sorts out all the tools necessary for building your own unique tam.
I will say the book would be most useful to some who has had some experience knitting. Although, I do believe an intrepid beginning knitter would be successful.
Good education on the basics of tam construction.......2006-03-16
This book gets high marks for taking the time to explain the basic construction of the tam. From there it goes on to discuss how various parts of the tam can be modified for different effects. The knitter begins to understand the 'why' of things much more quickly with this approach. I was able to follow the concepts easily and make several tams without any prior experience with circular or pointed needles. I did not give 5 stars however because there are several major errors in the modified instructions for larger gauge yarns. These are frustrating if the instructions are followed blindly although it becomes obvious pretty quickly where the mistakes lie (e.g. factor of 2 off in a calculation, repeat asterisk in the wrong place). I recommend going over all calculations for the larger gauge yarns thoroughly. These really need to be corrected in a later edition.
Hats are Hard! (A review for fellow-knitters).......2005-04-13
This review is in part an answer and a rebuttal to karen a lothrop's one-star review (see below).
Mary Rowe has produced a book full of history, a bit of anthropology, knitting, and lots of tam o'shanters! Within this specialization, wonderful information is given covering all aspects of knitting one of these articles, from the materials required, to the shape and construction of the item, to the stitch patterns available and their adaptability to tams. Any confident intermediate knitter will benefit greatly from this work.
That said, certain issues ARE assumed. This is most certainly NOT a book on how to knit, nor even a book on how to knit hats. It is a book on how to knit tams, TAMS! In order to knit an essentially flat, circular piece, some familiarity with both circular needles and double-pointed needles is necessary, for example.
A circular needle loses its usefulness when the circumference of the knitting becomes too small for the needle. Given the variance of yarn weight, needle size, and individual knitting tension (gauge) in the world, it is impossible for the author to anticipate every situation and guess when this point will be reached. A specific criticism of Ms Lathrop's is "she doesn't tell you when to switch from circular to double pointed". She then lists Elizabeth Zimmermann as an example of a knitting author whom she prefers. Mrs Zimmermann's own instruction on this matter, however, is simply, "Naturally you will have had the wit to change to the four needles when the circular needle became unmanageable." (KNITTING WITHOUT TEARS, by Elizabeth Zimmermann, ©1971) In other words, when you can't stand it anymore, change! In Britain, where double-pointed needles that are over ten inches long are more readily available than in America, the entire tam is knitted with them, dispensing with the circulars altogether.
Buying a crafting book is a tricky business. Both the skill level addressed and the subject matter covered vary greatly, and the nature of the patterns and instructions given (if any) will correspond to this variance. The general tone of Ms Lothrop's review suggests disappointment that this book did not help her.
Ms Lothrop has my every sympathy. It is frustrating and disheartening to search for a specific reference work, only to find that you don't understand it (or that it doesn't apply). Nevertheless, every book has its intended audience. It is unfair to blame the book if you discover that you are not part of that audience. (For example, I found a knitting book on scarves and shawls that was criticized by a user for being about scarves and shawls. In other words, the user wished that it had some other garments as well.)
Perhaps what is really needed is a more reliable way of assessing a book's appropriateness to one's needs before purchase.
She's no Elizabeth Zimmermann.......2001-09-11
This book is dedicated to Elizabeth Zimmerman the knitting Guru.Thats about the only thing that gives this book credibility. Her directions for the basic tam start out okay but she doesn't tell you when to switch from circular to double pointed.then she tells you to decrease using one less stitch but from then on your on your own until the very end.I finished my Tam with no enthusiasm to try another.I anxiously await the arrival of knitting without tears by Elizabeth Zimmermann she lived a long life but I wish she was still around,I knit again because of her inspiration .I buy books to learn how and for guidance.I guess Mary forgot what its like to not know how to make something.Buy knitting without tears unless your experienced
Why knit a tam o'shanter if you aren't a Scot?.......2001-02-14
Because not only are these hats cute and flattering on nearly anybody, but they are terrific projects on which to learn color knitting technique. This book teaches you to make the traditional Fair Isle tam and has some lovely, flower-like patterns to knit. It's fun just to look at this book, but even more fun to make the hats. The moment you take the hat off the dinner plate where you are blocking it into a flat, circular shape, and put it on your head is one you won't want to miss as a knitter.
Tams are knit circularly, and use both circular needles and double point needles. A series of decreases shapes the hat. They use traditional Fair Isle patterns like OXO's or peeries (small designs of short repeating patterns.) If you choose one of the many delightful shades of Shetland yarn available in 3 oz skeins, you can make a minor masterpiece of shading, color and pattern.
If you intend to embark on a fair isle sweater, or just love the look of Fair Isle but want a quicker project, this book is just invaluable.

Book Description
Willie Doherty (born 1959), a native of Derry, Northern Ireland, is an artist of international standing. He uses photography, video, and sound installations to explore the fallibility of human memory and our collective need to engage with the stories and images that represent our experiences.
Many of Willie Doherty's photographs suggest a strong potential for narrative development. The viewer, however, is compelled to move beyond the surface of the picture to examine its social, political, psychological, and economic dimensions. Much of his work is open-ended or contingent and questions the truth-telling aspects of visual representation. This midcareer retrospective is the most comprehensive book yet published on this artist.

Book Description
In Laying It on the Line: Notes of a Team Player, Howard Griffith shares his motivational story of how sheer determination made him a National Football League star and Super Bowl champion. From his days as a troubled youngster in his dangerous southside Chicago neighborhood to his years as John Elway's and Terrell Davis' teammate with the two-time world-champion Denver Broncos, Griffith tells the reader how "beating the odds" became much more than a cliche to him. "If you learn to expect the barriers and anticipate the bumps and bruises along the way, " says Griffith, "you pad and protect yourself, and prepare the way towards personal success. Becoming a team player is absolutely crucial to your ultimate success." Laying It on the Line will help the readers reach their goals, too.
Customer Reviews:
An inspiring story from a high class football player........2001-07-01
This is a book for anyone with dreams, or for someone who just wants to be a better person.
Howard Griffith is a first-class football player. In my honest opinion, Howard is the most underrated football player in the NFL. Year in and year out he is busting his butt for guys like Terrell Davis and Mike Anderson, and not complaining about it. This man made Terrell Davis. And hopefully he will get his pro-bowl before its all over.
Enough about him as a football player, on with the book. In this book, Howard talks about his life and the trials he has been through. This is a story of a man who never lost sight of his goals. While he has had a tough life, he never gave up, and always does his best to help his team - even if that means taking blocking assignments and never getting the ball. "Laying It On The Line, Notes Of A Team Player" teaches people to better themselves... ...to better the world. With his actions speak louder than words attitude, he teaches independance, how to be a person free from following others and just being the best person you can possibly be. He teaches about responsibility and maturity, and taking life seriously.
Reading this book was a turning point in my life. Before i read it, I was, simply stated, and punk kid. This book taught me the importance in doing your very best at everything you do and how important things like you education are to you. He shows you how you can be indepent but still conform, not to stick out. After reading this, It opened my mind really. Before hand I was quick to judge just about anyone that didn't believe exactly how I felt. Now I think empathatically, and am not so quick to judge. I know it's irrelavant, but its amazing what certain situation you can be put in can change you life around in a totally different manor.
Props to Howard Griffith with this truly inspiring story. This is a perfect book for anyone with dreams, and that is willing to work. Howard Griffith's book deserves every 5 stars I gave it, maybe more (if I could). Simply stated, this book can change you life.
Phenomenal.......2001-02-18
This self-proclaimed bookworm ranks this book as one of her all-time favorites. To those who aren't necessarily interested in football, to those who don't understand football, and for those who don't even know what football is, believe me when I say, you will undoubtedly connect with some, if not all of this autobiography. Indulge yourself in this down-to-earth, eye-opening, and often comedic drama that chronicles the ups and downs of life, as it relates to Griffith's chosen career of football. I see this book as more of the spiritual journey of a young man's life, explained through the metaphor of football. It could easily be a training development manual for any business consisting of more than one person - it's all about teamwork and the success, respect, honor and glory that can be achieved if all involved are confident and secure with their individual roles and truly understand the concept of "team." If you need to be "pumped up" and inspired about anything you're trying to accomplish in your life right now, I suggest you purchase this book - it just may be the medicine you need.
The best motivational book that I 've read thus far!.......2001-02-14
This a truly remarkable account of Griffith's story and the obstacles that he's faced to get where he is today(the best fullback in the NFL). There were so many points in his life that he could have given up--but he didn't. Don't think that it's your "typically" sports book--it's not! This book is for anyone that aspires to fulfill their dream. I highly recommend this book. Kudos to Griffith!!!
NFL's Finest!.......2000-10-25
As a professional book reviewer and avid reader, all I can say is: It's about time that a story like Griffith's gets some "air-time." LAYING IT ON THE LINE is uplifting and inspiring, while dispeling many of the myths about players in the NFL. It highlights the positive aspects of professional sports and reveals important ways in which team sports can develop one's mental and physical "game." Griffith is a living example of what it means to be a true champion, on and off the field. This book's a winner!
