Book Description
The hideously disfigured body of Lucius Licinius was found in the atrium. The only clues are a blood-soaked cloak, and, carved into the stone at the corpse's feet, the word Sparta....For Gordianus the Finder, summoned from Rome to a luxury resort on the Bay of Naples, the case is agonizing. The overseer of Marcus Crassus's estate has been murdered, apparently by two slaves bent on joining Spartacus's revolt. The wealthy, powerful Crassus vows to honor an ancient law and kill his ninety-nine remaining slaves in retaliation. From the brutal stench of a slave galley to the limpid, sea-glazed beauty of Baiae and the sulphurous pits of the Sybil at Cumae, Giordanus draws closer to the terrifying truth. Enmeshed in a world of desperate slaves and duplicitous masters, extravagant feasts and sordid secrets, he must risk all he loves, including his life, to stop a senseless slaughter-and save the very future of Rome itself.AUTHORBIO: STEVEN SAYLOR is the author of eight books in the Roma Sub Rosa featuring Gordianus the Finder, most recently Roman Blood. He divides his time between homes in Austin, Texas, and Berkeley, California.
Customer Reviews:
The Second Book in the Roma Sub Rosa series.......2006-12-18
Steven Saylor's fascination with Ancient Rome began in his childhood. A history graduate and former newspaper and magazine editor, he lives in Berkeley, California. His series of books about Ancient Rome and featuring Gordianus the Finder are extremely popular both here in England and also in America. Anyone who is a fan of Lindsey Davis will love these books too.
Gordianus the Finder, the investigator of crimes, a man whose skill and integrity have made him much sought after by some of the most important men in Rome. Men who may need a secret to be kept, men who need to know that when Gordianus is working for them he will be discreet and not susceptible to bribery.
Marcus Crassus is the wealthiest man in Rome. Apart from all his property and businesses in Rome he has a fine villa in the Gulf of Puteoli. When his estate manager is found murdered it seems pretty obvious to the great man that the deed was done by two of his missing slaves. A renegade gladiator called Spartacus is mounting a rebellion and two of Crassus's slaves are missing, probably run off to join the Slave Revolt.
Crassus vows that unless the missing slaves are found within 5 days he will massacre his remaining slave. It falls to Gordianus to find out the truth of the matter and in a place riddled with intrigue and secrets Gordianus realises that all is not as it seems and the deeper he delves the more danger he is bringing upon himself.
Gordianus the Finder is back!.......2006-10-12
This second entry in the Gordianus the Finder series is another strong one, although not quite as excellent as Roman Blood was. In this book, Grodianus and his adopted son Eco are summoned in the middle of the night to help a citizen who lived on the seashore, so they take a fast boat to Baiae where a hideous slaughter of slaves is going to occur in three days unless Gordianus can unmask the real killer of the Baiae prominent citizen. The book is definitely graphic, and depicts life as it was in Italy in 72 B.C. The setting is actually ten years later than when we last saw Gordianus in Roman Blood, but he is still as wonderful as ever. He still stops at nothing to get at the truth of things, no matter who it hurts or affects. This is truly fascinating storytelling, and Saylor makes Ancient Rome come alive.
Another strong entry in the series.......2006-04-26
I have enjoyed several of Saylor's previous novels centered around Gordianus the Finder. Each of the novels is essentially a criminal procedural set in Rome in the century before the birth of Christ. The protagonist is a detective for hire, Gordianus the Finder (delicious name). Usually employed by a Roman personality whose name has carried through the ages to our day, Gordianus steadily unravels the facts as each of the novels builds towards a relatively satisfying conclusion. The challenges faced and facts to be uncovered are set up competently, but the true pleasure in the reading is the skill with which the author places them in a historical universe that rings true, and in the manner in which that universe impacts the situation.
In this novel, Gordianus is roused in the middle of the night by a mysterious stranger with a military air who bids him to come perform a service outside of Rome for a monumental sum. Our protagonist, ever stuck in a middle class purgatory when it comes to his expenses versus his income, and piqued by curiosity, accepts, and from there the story moves forward steadily.
Part of the pleasure of the novel is the multi-layered mystery - who hired him, what happened, why what happened is of such consequence, and so on. The actual doer of the deed is much less important than the impact and consequences of that deed, and Saylor sets up his storyline with aplomb along these lines. Thus, much as I'd like to further reveal the plot, it would be cheating the reader of the review to do so, and so I'll refrain.
Further pleasure is derived from the verisimilitude of the lives of the Romans in those days - the food, the behavior, the social hierarchies, etc.. The story moves along steadily but without undo haste, and will appeal more to those who enjoy description and implication rather than speed of plot. If I have any real criticism, it is that, given that the identity of the evil doer is so secondary to the impact of his deeds, the author makes short shrift of the ultimate revelation, and in fact (as far as I could tell) there isn't much out there for the reader to proactively discern the antagonist, nor, frankly, to care much about the fact that it was the particular person named. While this is a valid criticism, it is clear that this was exactly the author's intent, which somewhat mitigates things.
An enjoyable period piece, rife with interesting insights on Roman society, and one of the author's better efforts.
Gordianus visits the seashore.......2006-02-15
This second entry in the ROMA SUB ROSA series opens as Gordianus is woken in the middle of the night by a mysterious summons to an undisclosed location to solve a crime and save scores of innocent people. Despite the apprehensions of his slave (and lover) Bethesda, Gordianus and his adopted son Eco, are soon on their way. Gordianus of course quickly surmises their destination as Baiae, a wealthy town on the present day Bay of Naples.
Once he arrives he discovers that the crime is, as he had surmised, murder and murder of a wealthy man. The chief suspects are two missing slaves which is why scores of lives are in danger. According to ancient Roman law if a master is killed by a slave all the slaves in the household, in this case 99, are deemed dangerous and sentenced to death. This law is not often enforced but in the present day (72 BC), there is a slave revolt, led by Spartacus, in progress that is threatening the Empire. Is it just fear of the slaves joining the rebellion that is causing this harsh measure to be used or is it something else?
Gordianus and Eco are quickly immersed in the victim's household and find that there are many things that are not quite what they seem. The trail to solve the crime leads the two to the Sybil, into the sea and to the very Gates of Hades. Old scandals and illicit love affairs are uncovered. Ultimately Gordianus of course triumphs but not without many interesting twists and turns along the way.
As with ROMAN BLOOD, Saylor immerses the reader into the world of ancient Rome. The reader is made to see how uncertain live in the ancient world was, for example, Gordianus travels just a short way from his home but to his family he may as well have fallen off the face of the earth. We also see into the lives of the slaves, from the quasi equal status of Bethesda to the brutal existence of the galley slaves. Even among the upper classes live is very much a matter of chance and must be conducted within very proscribed limits. This series of novels breaths live into Roman life in a more effective manner than a score of serious scholarly works could.
The mystery is compeling, well plotted with the clues fairly laid out for the reader to follow. The only problem I had with this one is that some of the characters were rather sketchily drawn and there were so many characters and subplots that it was challenging to keep everything straight.
My HBO Rome withdrawal.......2005-11-26
Wanting to be transported back to Rome, I found this author through Amazon reviewers and I was not disappointed. While this is a few years earlier than the series, and a few miles south of Rome, it did the trick.
The mystery held my attention, but, the characters and the decriptions of the various settings make the book.
I will read more Saylor.
PS - one month later. I've read more Saylor. This one stands out for its perspective on slavery in ancient Rome and the very wealthy Crassus and his life style. For more on the justice system and the Clodii Family read "The Venus Throw". "Rubicon" gives a plausible description of Rome right after of Caesar's crossing and Pompey's flight from Italy.
It appears that each Saylor mystery weaves a good story around people or themes of Rome.

Filled with richly drawn characters and unforgettable intrigues, Katherine Kurtz's Deryni novels inspired some of her most devoted fans to write their own Deryni tales-and Kurtz has collected eight of her favorites in this exciting anthology. Deryni Tales is a heartfelt tribute to the world she created-from the devoted fans who have made it their own.
Customer Reviews:
excellent fan fiction edited by the creator of the series.......2003-08-09
I was initially hesitant to read this collection of Deryni short stories. The Deryni series is one of my all time favorites, but Deryni Tales is fan fiction. I don't normally read fan fiction, but it appears that with Katherine Kurtz herself editing the collection, these stories are now part of the Deryni canon. This was important to me as I did not want to read anything that did not officially fit into the Deryni canon.
I'm glad that I did read these stories. While nothing major happens (as far as affecting any of Kurtz's storylines or characters), but it does shed some light on events throughout the Deryni history. Surprisingly enough, some of these stories are just as good as anything Katherine Kurtz might have written. Some she claims to wish that she had written them. There are several stories that I thought were simply excellent: "Lovers of Shadows", "A Midsummer's Questing", "Arilan the Talmud Student", "The Green Tower", and "Dhugal at Court". Okay, I see that this is more than a couple stories. I'm not sure there is really a weak link in this collection. The only disappointment for me was that there was only one story set in the era of Joram and Evaine (A Midsummer's Questing"). Hopefully there will be future volumes of Deryni Tales that will further illuminate the world that Katherine Kurtz has created. If the fan fiction she publishes is this good, I will gladly accept more while I wait for Kurtz to publish another novel of her own. Highly recommended for fans of the Deryni.
Liber Amoris.......2003-03-13
Normally, I tend to avoid fan fiction, so it was with some trepidation that I bought this novel. However, a fan of the series I couldn't stay away. It far exceeded my expectations!
Everyone seems to focus on the stories "Arilan the Talmud Student" and "Lover of Shadows"--for me the best though is "A Midsummer's Questing." Spoiler-free, let me say that teh author shows a deep understanding of the psedo-Catholic doctrine extant in Ms. Kurtz's work and also of the true meaning behind the Love of God.
All the stories are excellent examples of fan fiction. The reason for 4 stars is that a few just don't have the same spark as Kurtz's novels. They're not bad, just lacking something intangible.
Deryni Tales from the Deryni Archives.......2003-01-02
A fine collection of some of the best offerings from the Deryni Fan community. These tales, originally published in the Magazine _Deryni Archives_, have now been polished and re-worked into a fine fan anthology. Ms. Kurtz also presents a new short tale of her own in this volume.
Among this collection are some wonderful tales from author's I sincerely hope to see in print again soon. Lohr Miller's _Lover to Shadows_, a piece about Charissa's private life, is worth the price alone. Frankly I cannot praise this piece too highly.
Arilan the Talmud Student, addresses the subject of Jews in Gwynedd. A thought provoking and well written tale.
I could go on and on, but simply put there is not a tale in this volume not worth reading. If only to see how the universe is envisioned, or perhaps more aptly put, expanded upon by a group of very fine writers.
I can but hope that one day a Volume II will be published.
Good, not remarkable or great.......2002-08-15
This collection of fan fiction from the Deryni universe is enjoyable, but not especially gripping. The one exception to this is, as other writers have noticed, John Mohr's story, "Lover of Shadows." That is a beautifully-crafted interesting and marvelous story. I hope he writes some more. It is a pleasure to encounter familiar characters again, such as Joram, Evaine, Rhys, Richenda, Dhugal and so on, and get some more information about them.
This collection also cleared up something for me, in that Ms. Kurtz explains that she tries to write her female characters closer to the way medieval woman actually lived. Her choice, of course, but, I have to say, if I wanted to read about the way women lived, I would read history, not fantasy. I also notice, interestingly, that she does not follow our medieval history by producing great female abbesses or theologians. Surely, the Church of Gwynedd could produce a Hildegard of Bingen, a Hilda of Whitby or a Catherine of Siena? Again, her choice, but I have to say one of the reasons I only get the Deryni books from the library instead of buying them is that the only women who actually hold real power are either misguided or evil, and that her most sympathetic and interesting characters are invariably male.
Fan Fiction at its Best!.......2002-07-05
In Deryni Tales, Katherine Kurtz has pulled together 8 of the best fan-written stories dealing with her Deryni universe. The stories are not only well worth reading, but showcaes the talent and devotion of these Deryni fans. There is also a story by Kurtz herself in the volume, reason alone for having the book, but all of the stories are more than worthwhile reads. If you have read the Deryni series and enjoyed it, you owe it to yourself to read these additional Tales.

disappointing.......1999-12-14
This book was a big disappointment to me because I really love the Scarlet Pimpernel. I also think that time travel is really cool, so I decided to give this book a try. There was very little about Percy or the Scarlet Pimpernel in it. The story focused on the intrigue within the time operatives. It also had alot of sci-fi talk about the workings of time travel. If you like that in a story than by all means this would be the book for you; but if you're interested in the history I wouldn't recommend it. I also found a good deal of swearing, which was not needed, in the book.
One of the best volumes in the Time Wars series!.......1999-06-03
"Scarlet Pimpernel?" Sounded like a pretty sissified . . . um . . . whatever it was--before I read this title from Hawke. Just like every other book in the rest of the Time Wars series, this volume either introduced me to a number of historical or legendary figures from history, or let me see them from a new and exciting perspective. Check it out!
Love, Adeventure, and Time Travel!.......1999-05-01
If you've ever read or seen The Scarlet Pipernel, you know this story. Percy Blakeney pretends to be a fop, but really he is the famous Scarlet Perpernel, who rescues French Aristocrats from the horrors of the Revolution.
In Simon Hawke's version Finn Delaney has to take the Scarlett Pipernel's place. Copmlications arrise when he falls in love with Lady Blakeney and she with him. She starts asking if Percy ever had a cousin who looked just like him. Not only does Finn have to keep the fact that he is the Pipernel a secret, but she is even beginning to suspect the truth that the is not her husband!
Simon Hawke does a wonderful job of taking classic stories and making them fresh. I reccomend the whole series, but this is my second favorite, after Zenda Vendetta.

Simple, alphabetized list of foods, illnesses and remedies. Not very detailed, but rather like a pocket-book reference point.
a valuable resource.......2006-04-12
This has been a book that I can always depend on when I need a reference. The information is similiar to that I have received from nurses and doctors. It is just so handy to have it right at my fingertips. Several of my friends have asked to borrow this book, and I'm always apprehensive until it is returned to me.
Easy and informative source.......1999-04-22
This book is fabulous. It presents an easy to use, wide ranging amount of information, and presents it in a way that makes you excited to cook and eat all these good things! With recipes, information of good vitamin sources etc, it has remained one of my most important nutritional reference books for years.
Book Description
A good bit fits your horse's mouth and facititates a productive "riding dialogue" between you and your horse. But there are so many types and styles of bits available that making a selection can be a daunting task, particularly if you don't know what to look for. Jessica Jahiel demystifies the bit-selection process by emphasizing that the best bit is the mildest one suitable for the horse and the job. She then discusses conformation of the horse's head and mouth, how a bit works, bit types and materials, quality, price, and accessories. She explains how to position a bit in a horse's mouth and the best way to handle the bit when riding. With proper bit selection and the "good hands" that come with experience, you will soon find that communication with your horse-and, thus your ride-is vastly improved.
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps appropriate for beginning riders.......2006-03-28
This is a very basic introduction to bits and their function. The book never adequately addresses the subject and comes far short of the title. I believe that all except the most novice of horse enthusiasts will already be familiar with the vast majority of the material presented.
If you have absolutely no knowledge of the subject and you're looking for a very brief overview, this is the book for you.
"The Complete Book of Bits and Bitting" provides a much more thorough coverage of the subject although it is perhaps a bit too thorough for the novice rider.
a little bit about bits.......2006-02-27
general info. is good, but being ignorant about bits i was hoping for more in depth information.

Rugby as chess.......2007-08-09
With 38 years of rugby experience & a fairly extensive print reference collection, I rate this insightful work from Jim Greenwood as tops. Anyone who can view the strategic considerations in a rugby match as similar to the thought processes needed in a chess match will find delight here, Greenwood's earlier work Total Rugby is likewise, though more in a technical skills manner. Think Rugby brings the mental aspects of the game to the forefront. Physical prowess is valuable, but experience & conscious decision making can make all the difference. Opportunities are limited in any match and knowing how to capture the most & waste the least is what you want for your side. This book can take you there!
THINK Rugby.......2007-07-09
I'm only part way through this book, but so far it's been great. I have a hard time slowing the game down in my head during play and analyzing what's going on. This book has helped me to relax a bit, take my time, and think about what the other team is doing and what I should be doing to beat them. Overall, great book. Can't wait to finish it now.
Awsome Resource.......2006-06-20
Thing Rugby is am amazing book for any coach, player or even fan of rugby. It will help you develop as a player or coach. This is a resource no team should be without. One of it's primary focus's is to help you learn to think and play as a team, from the coach down to the reserves. Definitely a must read for any Rugby Enthusiast.
Very deep- expands your mental strength of the game........1999-04-18
Mr. Greenwood went into great detail about the Tactical Decision Making that goes on during a match. Not only does this book expand a players thinking capability on the pitch, but many of the methods of thinking can be used off the pitch. Do not buy to help out your physical game, but your mental game.

Book Description
The life and work of Andy Warhol are interconnected in a manner unlike any other artist. One of the preeminent depicters of the society of the spectacle, Warhol became a spectacle unto himself, hobnobbing with celebrities and creating an ongoing hipster scene around his image. As his work has continues to grow in popularity, and critical positions on him proliferate, the depth and ambiguity of his oeuvre becomes clearer, and scholars and audiences alike now see Warhol for the prophetic visionary he was. Andy Warhol and His World presents an amazing selection of Warhol's work from throughout his career--from his early Brillo boxes and silkscreens of auto accidents and electric chairs, to his ''portraits'' of Elvis, Marilyn, Liz, Mao, and Queen Elizabeth II, to film stills and self-portraits--as well as extensive essays on Warhol and the world he reflected and created. What emerges is an artist who addressed death and mortality as much as he did commodity fetishism and celebrity.

The East European Gypsies: Regime Change, Marginality, and Ethnopolitics
ASIN: 0299176703 |
Book Description
Historian Gilad Margalit eloquently fills a tragic gap in the historical record with this sweeping examination of the plight of Gypsies in Germany before, during, and since the era of the Third Reich.
Germany and Its Gypsies reveals the painful record of the official treatment of the German Gypsies, a people whose future, in the shadow of Auschwitz, remains uncertain. Margalit follows the story from the heightened racism of the nineteenth century to the National Socialist genocidal policies that resulted in the murder of most German Gypsies, from the shifting attitudes in the two Germanys in 1945 through reunification and up to the present day.
Drawing upon a rich variety of sources, Margalit considers the pivotal historic events, legal arguments, debates, and changing attitudes toward the status of the German Gypsies and shines a vitally important light upon the issue of ethnic groups and their victimization in society. The result is a powerful and unforgettable testament.

An important, neglected publication on Roma in the Holocaust.......2004-04-12
This monumental collection, the result of pains-taking research, presents for the first time the complete facsimile records of the Roma (Gypsies) in the Zigeunerlager of Auschwitz-Birkenau. While readers should keep in mind that at least one, if not more, transports of Roma to the camp were gassed upon arrival and not officially entered in the registry, this multi-volume set still provides invaluable data on those Roma registered in the camp, including children born there. Such information includes the age, date of entry, date of death, name, gender, place of origin, and in some cases cause of death for a great many of the internees. Hence, we are provided with a wealth of data, ripe for statistical analysis, that unfortunately has yet to be incorporated into a study of the Ziguenerlager. This edition also includes primary source accounts of Romani survivors and Nazi camp officials, which paint a much better picture of the barbaric conditions existing in the camp than have been published elsewhere. There are also, pictures of some survivors and camp officials, architectural plans of the camp, and a cogent introduction by the director of the State Museum. Except for the facsimiles of the camp records, which of course are in German, the text is presented in three languages, English, German, and Polish, making this work easily accessible to scholars, students, and the public-at-large. I highly recommend this set be added to the collection of any college or university library.
