4 out of 5 stars Beware of English Twins in Hedge Mazes.......2007-04-11

As I began reading this book I almost immediately found that I was totally confused. Lori and Bill, the main characters from the first book were nowhere to be seen and in their place I found an almost completely different set of characters. The only holdovers that I could find were Aunt Dimity of course, the delightful Pym sisters and Emma Porter. Emma had only a minor role in the first book but in this entry she was one of the main characters along with Derek Harris a recently widowed father of two delightful children. After doing a little research I found that this book, like the first one is introducing characters that will be central to the series later on but I had to figure this out on my own for there were no indications whatsoever within the book as to what was going on.

The author has chosen a grand English estate for the setting of this book as she introduces her second set of characters and a lovely setting it is. Emma Porter is an American who as an avid gardener is touring English gardens and while roaming around a hedge maze she runs into the Pym sisters who seem to be there at the behest of Aunt Dimity. The good sisters decide that Emma is the perfect person to renovate part of the gardens at Penford Hall, the home of their friend Duke Grayson Alexander. From there the story takes off as Derek Harris and his children are also at the Hall while Derek repairs a stained glass window that is a central part of the history and legend of Penford Hall.

As in the first book no one dies in this entry although there seems to have been a very mysterious death at Penford Hall a few years earlier. That death plays a central part in the mysterious plot of this book but that is not the only mystery present so when one mystery is solved there are plenty more to take its place. Amazingly the author is able to juggle all of these mysteries in such a way so as not to confuse the reader any more than necessary and in the end everything is as usual all tied up in a neat little package. A good cozy mystery should never leave its readers hanging after all.

As in the first book this story is very well written, fun and engaging. So much so in fact that I found myself unable at times to put the book down even though the hour had grown very late. The characters are well thought out, believable and quite memorable and the setting is so well described that I could almost smell the fragrant gardens and feel the rich soil in my hands. All in all this is a very good book but I am going to have to deduct at least one star for the confusing way that this book approaches the fact that it is introducing a whole new set of characters without any warning whatsoever. I'm not sure how I would have accomplished this task differently but I just wasn't satisfied with the way that this author did it.

1 out of 5 stars Good until the end........2006-10-27

I started to read this book with avid interest. I was really touched by young Peter's memory of his mother, and I loved the story behind the stained glass window. Some of the characters are a trifle wacky, but I put up with that until the end, when the answers to everything come out. Suddenly all the characters begin acting silly and nasty over nothing! Frumpy Emma bullies and yells at her host, and Kate Cole develops a sharp tongue towards not only the Duke but her mother as well. Kate must've been starting her period and Emma going through the change. And the Duke is SO meek towards these nasty women! Maybe Atherton wanted to cut through the over-sweet atmosphere of the book with this disagreement, but it just didn't make sense to me. It ruined the whole book for me. I am glad now that Nancy Atherton sticks to Lori Shepherd. At least her anger at something or someone makes some sense. Read Aunt Dimity And the Next of Kin to see what I mean. The Duke SHOULD have thrown Emma out!

4 out of 5 stars Another great Dimity book.......2006-02-01

The Aunt Dimity series is made up of great, light reads that are really fun. No heavy thinking here; just an enjoyable, lighthearted book. As I was reading this one, though, I kept expecting Lori to appear, but she didn't. I really think this book should go before Aunt Dimity's Death, not after. At any rate, it was still a very enjoyable read, and I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Charming Feminine Gothic Is Delightful Addition to Series.......2005-01-04

Although this is the second in the charming Aunt Dimity series, it is chronologically the first in the ongoing story of one enchanting English woman who changes lives for the better.

This time we meet homely American computer nerd Emma Porter. She has just been dumped by her longtime beau for a glamorous younger woman. Rather than cancel their planned trip to view the gardens of England, she decides to make the journey solo. An avid gardener herself, she feels this is just the balm her troubled ego needs. She gets far more than she bargained for when a pair of elderly sisters send her to view fabulous gardens owned by a Duke. Before hse has barely set foot on the soil, she finds herself designing the Duke's chapel gardens, preparing for a once-a-century fete, reconnecting a handsome handyman with his two young children, solving the murder of a rock star, and leading the Duke to wed the woman he has desired for years. Meanwhile, Aunt Dimity keeps her finger in the pie and all live happily ever after, or so we surmise.

If you like your mysteries light with a good-natured ghost and love in the air, you'll enjoy this one.

4 out of 5 stars A hint of romance and a dash of the paranormal........2004-06-01

Heroine: plump

CompuTech executive Emma Porter, a dumped frump abandoned by her lover of 15 years for a blonde sylph 20 years her junior, is anxious to leave New England for Old England and a long, relaxing vacation among the finest gardens of the world.

Once there, a series of odd coincidences lands the amateur gardener at Cornwall's infamous Penford Hall, where his grace, Grayson Alexander, insists she is the one meant to restore his grandmother's favorite flowerbeds. While there she meets the duke's old friend Derek Harris, widowed earl's son and father of two precocious young children, who was hired by Grayson to renovate the manor and ferret out a missing antique lamp in the process. Derek expresses concern to Emma that his old friend's estate is in terribly fine shape considering that his grace had been left in penury by the late duke. In fact, the Hall and its nearby village appear to have undergone extensive expensive renovations in the very recent past.

But where did the money come from? Was it possible Grayson was dealing in illicit funds? And did it have anything to do with Lex Rex, the punk rocker who met a tragic ending on the duke's yacht, and who turned out to have been penniless himself at the time of his death?

Perhaps only Grayson's super-model cousin Susannah knows the answer, but she's not talking--at least not since an "accident" in the ruins of a nearby castle left her unconscious.

What worked for me:

An avid gardener myself, I'm always keen to read a story that involves flowers.

The mystery kept me turning the pages, as did the sweet romance blossoming between Derek and Emma.

I haven't tried it so can't vouch for it, but the strawberry tart recipe certainly sounds scrumptious.

Size-wise Emma is full-figured, plump in her own eyes but deliciously curvy in her hero's. In fact, the men in the book seemed to prefer the charms of "hippy" women to that of the willowy super-model-in-residence.

What didn't work for me:

I thought the writing quality fell off a smidge in the middle of the book.

This is the second novel, albeit a prequel, in the Aunt Dimity series, yet she only appeared briefly in the story. In fact, "Aunt Dimity and the Duke" seemed more like "Emma Porter and the Duke's Friend".

Overall:

A good read for fans of British cozies who like a gardening theme, a hint of romance, and a dash of the paranormal in their stories.

If you liked "Aunt Dimity and the Duke" you might also enjoy "Thornyhold" or "The Dancing Floor".

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly delightful tale.......2007-01-05

This is the second in the series by Nancy Atherton and by far it is my favorite. It is a delightful combination of mystery, romance and comedy. I especially like it because of the over-arching philosophy that if you 'go confidently in the direction of your dreams', marvelous, miraculous things happen.

This is a detailed look at the current and historical set up of the chantry of the Tremere clan in the Vampire role-playing game. I went into this thinking that there would be a ton of stuff on the magic that they use... I was wrong. Most of this book is dedicated to the structure (literally and figuratively) of the chantry. If you are REALLY into the Tremere then go ahead and get this. If you dont want a guide to someones house then dont bother.

I gave it 3 stars becuase the information that they have is good, but I didnt think that the information was all that important...

The Star Wars Gamemaster Screen is a shield that allows gamemasters to hide their notes, maps, and charts from players. This new screen comes packed with eight panels of the most useful tables and charts from the Star Wars Roleplaying Game rulebook. Designed for easy access and comprehensive utility, this screen will allow gamemasters to have the most important information right at their fingertips at all times.

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2003-01-18

Being a brand new GM, and a pretty new gamer (been doing it for less than a year), I felt it beneficial to get a screen for my first campaign.

This is a decent screen, has lots of charts that we prefer not to memorize (cover and concealment, in particular), and is lacking others (starship combat especially). Pretty much all this has already been mentioned in other reviews.

The reason it only gets three stars from me is that I am using the Expanded and Revised Rule Book, so some of the charts are outdated. Fortunately, after a few minutes of pencil marking the screen, I had it fully updated, so it wasn't a big deal. But, be aware before you buy it. If you have the Revised Core Rulebook, be sure to crosscheck before you just accept the screen. Of course, as a GM it's up to you if you prefer the Revised rules...

4 out of 5 stars Just about everything a GM needs.......2001-05-05

It seems as though every game out there has developed a GM"s screen. I can still remember the oooold AD&D screens: back then, there was a player's screen and a DM's screen, and my personal DM had taped the two together into a huge shield that covered almost half of our card-table gaming area.

Those days, it seems are long gone. Modern games (especially the D20 system) require less and less charts, graphs and tables to run. The "new-wave" games are slick, streamlined, and make sure that very little of the storytelling experience is slowed down by chunky rules and the flipping of pages. Thusly, there are fewer instances where a GM needs to glance at charts.

Nonetheless, it is indeed helpful to have a screen to secure the GM's "secret notes" from the all-prying eyes of her greedy players. In this respect, the Star Wars screen is alright, but not "awesome".

It, like the game itself, is very similar to the D&D screen. In fact, most of the charts are SW versions of D&D charts. For instance, the Fundamental Actions in Combat chart is the exact same chart as on the D&D screen, but instead of the column that lists "5-foot step?" (allowed), it reads: "2-meter step?" (allowed), with "yes" or "no" listed for each action.

The SW screen also lacked any of the important Force- and Starship- tables. I was dissapointed to find that Vitality-point costs and starship size modifiers were not present on this screen (luckily I typed up the tables myself a few weeks before I purchased the screen).

The main saving grace for my four-star rating was the presence of the "Multiple Ranged Attacks" table, taken straight from the Combat section of the rulebook. This, I have found, I have used more than any of the other charts on the screen. The artwork on the "players side" captures the feel of Star Wars, with a non-disjointed picture that combines the front and back covers of the rulebook (you can actually see Anakin and Darth's faces colliding together) as well as several pictures of the example PC's from Invasion of Theed and the Rulebook.

In conclusion, I'd have to say that the screen is not a bad screen, it's just not an excellent screen. Using the D&D version didn't slow down play at all, if you simply convert the movement distances from standard to metric in your mind. The Multiple actions chart is by far the most useful, but just in case, keep your rulebook close at hand for starship- and force- related actions. Nonetheless, lets face it, it looks cool to have the right screen for your game, anyway.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but unnecessary........2001-03-04

So it's no secret that having a GM screen is important both for hiding your die rolls and having quick reference information on the other side. I you GM frequently, you should probably have one of these.

I, however, have simply taken a folder and photocopied the information I know I frequently refer to from the Core Rulebook. I've even drawn a cool scene on the outer side. The screen I've made works better for me than the screen from Wizards does.

However, the GM screen doesn't exactly cost a fortune. If you'd rather buy one than go through the work to make one, I wouldn't call it unwise.

                              Book Description

When Gourmet magazine debuted in the 1940s, America’s wineries were still reeling from the lingering effects of Prohibition and the loss of wines from war-torn Europe. But for every closed door, there was an open bottle: The bleak postwar years were actually a prelude to today’s unprecedented and widespread appreciation for the grape. New York Times bestselling author Ruth Reichl reread sixty-five years of wine articles in Gourmet to select the best for History in a Glass. The result is a rollicking tale of great meals, great walks, and wonderful drinks as Americans discover the pleasures of wine.
These marvelous essays were written by men and women who were not only on hand to witness wine’s boom but, in many cases, helped to foster the environment that made it thrive. The early days after World War II provided a great opportunity for James Beard and Frank Schoonmaker to reacquaint oenophiles with the joys of European wines. Through tireless dispatches from the Continent, they inspired American vintners to produce world-class wines on their own rich soil.
In subsequent pieces, an impressive, surprisingly diverse roster of writers revel in the sensual and emotional pleasures of wine: the legendary Gerald Asher reflects on the many faces of Chianti; Hillaire Belloc dispenses bits of wisdom by the glass to his niece on her wedding day; the science fiction titan Ray Bradbury rhapsodizes about the earthy pleasures of dandelion wine; Kate Colman explores the moral quandary surrounding a friend’s unintentionally generous gift of a rare Bordeaux; Hugh Johnson reports on Hungarian varieties during the height of Cold War tensions in the early 1970s; even Gourmet’s current spirits editor, James Rodewald, reminisces on the first time he fell in love–with a bottle of Pinot Noir.
With an Introduction by Ruth Reichl, and covering more than six decades of epicurean delights, History in a Glass is an astonishing celebration of all things good and grape.

Animal Healing and Vibrational Medicine by Sage Holloway,

If you have ever wondered what you can do for your sick pet, besides the usual trip to the vet, this book, a resource and reference guide for over 1,000 remedies, has some answers. It's obvious Sage Holloway has a deep respect and love for creatures. As she says, animals serve us provide for us, rescue us, feed us, and are our companions, yet cannot seek healing for themselves. We, their caretakers, must learn to do that. Since animals aren't as complicated with their emotional baggage as we are, that's a relatively easy thing to do. Vibrational medicine is a gentle way to revive their energies.
Holloway stresses the proper use of aromatic oils, the importance of using pure oils rather than the synthetic ones. A Vibrational Remedies Cross-Reference lists various types of remedies good for abuse, abandonment, cage stress, car sickness, depression and dozens of other conditions. A list of flower essence qualities, what they can do for your pet, is quite interesting, I could use a few of them myself!
As if this is not enough, there are charts on animal chakras, how to use dowsing, the five Chinese Elements, The Doctrine of Signatures. The Appendix has a resource list of companies that produce vibrational remedies, suggested music for your pets, and a list of essences carried by various companies. Sage has done a beautiful and thorough job of putting this book together. I strongly recommend Animal Healing and Vibrational Medicine if you have any kind of animal.

4 out of 5 stars Must have gun books for the hardware fan.......2005-08-07

Gene Gangarosa is one of the comparatively few gun writers with the integrity to call it like he sees it. You will not see Gene rating guns based on how "cool" they may be perceived to be by others. Thus this book reviews guns based on their quality, features, and performance, regardless of who made them. Gangarosa is well qualified to write on this topic, and although all reviews of anything that anyone writes is subjective, including this one, you will find an even-handedness in this book, as well as the companion volume, The Complete Guide to Compact Handguns which is also available on Amazon or from Stoeger Gun Books, the publisher.

First of all, these trade-size paperback books cover defensive handguns. Competition, hunting and plinking guns are not what these books are about. Service Handguns covers revolvers and pistols in the 4" to 5" size, guns which are normally carried in a belt holster. The companion Compact Handguns volume covers shorter and smaller version of defensive handguns. The books are organized into four basic sections, classic revolvers, classic semi-automatic pistols, modern revolvers, and modern pistols. The sheer number of models reviewed is staggering. Guns are all photographed in B&W, and fired for function and accuracy. With gun companies that make multiple versions of the same basic model a representative one or two might be fired, but all are discussed.

I rate these two books a four rather than five just because nothing is perfect. I do have some minor complaints. I would have liked to have seen expanded coverage of the biggest selling handguns such as Glock, Smith & Wesson, and SIG. But it is hard to fault an author for covering all makes equally. Second, function and accuracy varies among individual examples of the same exact model handgun. I would like to have seen that emphasized. Gangarosa is no doubt well aware of this fact, but an unsophisticated reader might get the wrong impression, right or wrong, basing judgments on examples of one. I don't want to hammer this one, as this is a minor complaint in the grand scheme of the book. Finally, I have found one or two minor inaccuracies, which are going to creep into any book. One example that comes to mind is in the section on classic revolvers. In reviewing the Ruger Security-six Gangarosa mentions the Speed-six and calls it slightly smaller. In fact the Speed-six is exactly the same size as the Security-six, using the same exact frame. The only differences in these two guns are that the Sec-six used a square butt grip frame and has adjustable sights while the Speed-six has a round-butt grip frame and fixed sights. Again, these inaccuracies are rare and minor. At the moment I can't even think of another example.

These books are now several years old, and given the dynamism of the handgun world of late, they are going to be slightly out of date. However I don't see that as a drawback. You read gun magazines to get the latest info on new releases, while you buy books as solid reference volumes which you'll refer to again and again. That is the type of books we have here.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, very comprehensive.......2003-08-25

This book appeals to two groups of people: the nastalgic, who want to read about the pistols of yesterday, and the people who want to know about the latest plastic sidearms. It covers all well known revolvers (Smith and Wesson, Colt, Tarus, etc) and semi-automatics (Colt, Beretta, Glock, Sig, Browning Hi-power, etc), plus numerous less-expensive copies of said guns. It also covers less known guns, like the Nagant, Tunulov, and Broomhandle. The only downside to this book is that some guns (like the Browning) are reviewed several times in the different sections, making it a pain to quickly access information.

4 out of 5 stars A great reference source that does it all.......2003-02-14

This is one of the best reference works out there for information about service handguns. It is a great combination of both factual data about subjective, expert opinion about a very large selection of standard handguns. The author gives the history of the weapon, the technical data, and shooting impressions. This is one of the few resources that give all three. The photographs are very good (not glossy but still very good), and the writing is clear and concise without being dry. The information is well organized with an excellent index. Finally, the author includes "classic" service handguns no longer in production as well as current models. Every gun I have been interested in has been in this book. I have read it from cover to cover just for pleasure reading. It is that good. If you are interested in firearms, I highly recommend it. The only downside is that it only comes in paperback, and I had to buy a second copy because I wore out my first one!

4 out of 5 stars A very good reference book for every handgun shopper.......1998-08-26

Gangarosa's book is a good source of information for those who seek reference material on standard-issue service hanguns (Glocks, Sigs and etc.) as well as more exotic, yet highly functional handguns (Astra, FEG and etc.). Complete with very good pictures, the book provides fairly detailed explanations of a very wide variety of handguns. This is definitely a must for those who are interested in handguns other than (or in addition to) the garden-variety found in local sports stores.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasing addition to the sense of Design.......2001-04-24

A very comprehensive book full of pictures of everything it covers. All aspects of design are covered from floors, walls, colors, furniture, accessories .. etc. All rooms of a house are featured and very detailed explanations are with each picture. Many new ideas that are actually feasable. A beautiful book for anyone who is planning a new house or just renovating an existing one (like me). I Particularly liked the mix of colors and the various ideas for the floors. This is a excellent addition to my decor library.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and filled with ideas.......1999-04-06

Looking through this book will take the film from your eyes. The rooms often have wildly disparate pieces or structural elements juxtaposed, yet on page after page the results are elegant, clean and fresh. I found the book especially good at suggesting innovative storage and space solutions -- see the bright white classic colonial kitchen with columns, by Mark Epstein on page 112, or the modern kitchen, all warmth, light, and soft curves, by Leopoldo Rosati on 116. (Speaking of storage solutions, don't miss Rosati's stunningly sensible take on how to show off your wine, 118.) "Eclectic Interiors" is full of unusual, eclectic ideas -- Livingston has a terrific eye.

4 out of 5 stars Vicarious Time Travel .......2006-03-11

I enjoyed the book. It was riveting. Chester Himes lived a very rich and challenging life. I have come to believe that we are defined by our relationships. It is very clear to me that his relationships as an adult were definitely affected by his dysfunctional home. He was certainly a man of courage and action who took risks and suffered the consequences of failure and celebrated the fruits of success. His vivid descriptions of events and people made me feel as If I had travelled back in time and to each new faraway place that fate took him.

5 out of 5 stars The Calculus of Fear and Loathing.......2003-02-14

I remember my father telling me how he kept "colored" workers out of the factory in Cleveland where he worked: He gave them a very low workbench so that they would have to bend down to operate the machinery and so suffer excruciating back pain until they quit.

Now turn that around and BE that worker. Feel the mounting frustration, the fear and loathing. Not once, not a dozen times, not seven times seventy times. But every waking moment of every day.

What Chester Himes does in this first volume of his autobiography is to make you, the reader, feel that frustration. You can see how it worked its way into Chester Himes's work, his relationships, even between the pores of his skin. It explodes into self-destructiveness when he is arrested and convicted for armed robbery, serving a seven and a half year sentence in the Ohio Penitentiary. When he could take it no more, he escapes to Europe. He spends time in France, England, and Spain and finds some few places where he could be a man without arousing strong antipathy.

The early scenes in the United States have a frenetic quality about them, as Himes is always on the move. "And although I did not it at that time, I was never to stop moving, always one jump ahead of disaster, always a hair's breadth away from destitution; until I can truthfully say there has been nothing in my life but change." (p. 293)

The second half of the book deals with his relationship with a white women named Alva whom he had met on the boat ride over to Europe. From Paris, they move to Arcachon, and then to London -- where the prejudice is so thick you could cut it with a knife -- and from thence to Mallorca and finally back again to Arcachon and Paris. All this takes place before the success of his Harlem detective novels with Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson.

"The American black is a new race of man ...," he writes on p. 285. "And for those hackneyed, diehard, outdated, slaverytime racists to keep thinking of him as a primitive is an insult to the intelligence. In fact, intelligence isn't required to know the black is a new man -- complex, intriguing, and not particularly likeable. I find it very difficult to like American blacks myself...."

There is something rough-hewn and brutally honest about Himes that I've always liked. I could not stop thinking, however, that it was he who ran into my father in Cleveland and got the low workbench.
