Book Description

To the dismay of her high society mother Cissy, Dallas heiress Andy Kendricks wants no part of the Junior League life -- opting instead for a job as a website designer and a passel of unpedigreed pals. Now her good friend Molly O'Brien is in bad trouble, accused of killing her boss at the local restaurant "Jugs." Though no proper deb would ever set foot in such a sleazy dive, Andy's soon slipping into skintight hot pants and a stuffed triple-D bra to gain employment there and somehow help clear Molly's name. But Andy's undercover lark is soon bringing her into too-close contact with all manner of dangerous adversaries -- including a shady TV preacher, a fanatical Mothers Against Porn activist ... and a killer who is none too keen on meddling rich girls.

3 out of 5 stars An Ok Book..........2007-03-14

I wanted to like this book, but found it to be a little boring. The author writes too much dialogue going on in the main character's head. Boring. Andrea continually asks herself the same questions over and over again. I find myself skipping ahead to the real dialogue...and not just the stuff in her head. I also don't like weak characters who can't say no... that's very frustrating!

5 out of 5 stars Get Debut!.......2006-04-07

The first book in the Debutante Dropout Mystery series is a fun, lighthearted look into the often hilarious life of "Andy" Kendricks. A dropout of the high society lifestyle, Andy decides to live her life her own way. She becomes a website designer, and avoids contact with her previous society friends and lifestyle (all to the chagrin of her mother). When a good friend, Molly, from the past seeks Andy's help clearing her name from a murder charge, Andy jumps right in. Knowing she needs to get inside information about the victim, Andy decides to become a waitress at a version of Hooters. Stuffing her bra and stuffing herself into hot pants, Andy goes undercover to discover who amongst his many enemies killed Molly's boss.

I loved the first entry into the series. Andy does a lot of goofy things, and doesn't spend too much time griping about her mistakes like a lot of characters in the genre. Andy's mother is hilarious, and has been pointed out in previous reviews, deserves more time in future installments. I look forward to more laugh-out-loud fun with this great series! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Almost like Bridget Jones meeting Miss Marple.......2006-01-16

I liked the fast-pace of the story, and McBride does a great job of meshing a mystery with chick lit. Which is nice, because one doesn't always want to read about post-menapausal little old ladies solving crimes.

So, as far as a beach read -- sign me up. It's really fun. Not a literary read. Not an Agatha Christie. But an entertaining read. I am looking forward to the rest of the series...if there's one thing I'd say on the other side, it's that I'm hoping there will be a little more mystery to the future Andy stories.

4 out of 5 stars The Debutante Debut of the Season.......2005-09-27

Andrea "Andy" Kendricks has never felt comfortable in the high society life her mother had planned for her. Even before she blew off her own debutante ball, she had become best friends with Molly, the "scholarship girl" at Andy's exclusive high school.

Close during high school and the beginning of college, Molly and Andy lost touch over the years. Until one morning when Molly calls Andy from the police station. Molly's boss has been murdered and Molly is the police's only suspect. Not that it's too much of a wild conclusion since she was seen leaving the scene of the crime and her fingerprints are the only ones on the murder weapon.

With the police not looking at anyone else, Andy decides to go undercover at the restaurant to find the real killer. Poking around, she begins to find out that no one liked the victim. In fact, the list of possible suspects includes anyone who ever met the man. Andy's sure that Molly is innocent. But can she find the right piece of information to convince the police they have the wrong person behind bars?

The book starts off with a bang that draws the reader in quickly. Unfortunately, the plot is a little uneven, slowing down in the middle. Even so, the writing is so engaging and the characters so endearing it's hard to put the book down. The final third is a race to the finish.

As I said, the characters are also endearing right from the start. Andy and Molly's friendship seems so real even after the time apart, you root for things to work out. Cissy, Andy's mother, is shown to have a much bigger heart then Andy would lead the reader to believe. She's a great character and her scenes were laugh out loud funny. She should have had more page time.

Even though the plot got lost a time or two, this is still an entertaining read for anyone looking for a light book. The characters have worked their way into my heart, and I will drop in on them again soon.

4 out of 5 stars Great "Girly" Mystery!.......2005-09-16

As a fan of the "Chick Lit" mystery's - this is ranked pretty high up there...

Very good, fast read with interesting characters and scenery.

4 out of 5 stars Oh, What A Tangled Web We Weave!.......2006-06-10

In the 2nd Debutante Dropout mystery, Andy Kendricks finds herself in a difficult situation. She is designing a website for Marilee Mabry's new TV show, The Sweet Life. Normally, Andy prefers to work for non-profit groups, and tends to shy away from the elite crowd to which she was born. Andy is talked into the job by her mother, Cissy Kendricks, the only close friend of the diva talk show host.

And things have been going a little awry for Marilee lately. Nobody seems to like the tantrum prone star, and incidents are happening with increasing frequently on set. A brown recluse spider bites a staff member, a microphone falls on another, and her daughter is poisoned. Is someone trying to kill Marilee or trying to ruin her new show? Could it be the boy toy that both Marilee and her daughter, Kendall, are involved with? Or is it the ex-husband who left Marilee before she became rich and famous? Or is it one of the numerous staff members that Marilee has run off or ticked off?

Once again Andy jumps into the mystery and tries to help. When a murder occurs, Andy feels she knows exactly who is to blame. But finding the suspect becomes a bit trickier. Does she have the right person in mind? Will she help the police locate the correct suspect before anyone else becomes a victim?

This series is one of my current favorites. I think Andy is a highly entertaining character. Not having endless amounts of money myself, it is sometimes difficult for me to relate to her chosen lifestyle of living way below her means. I do admire it, however, and feel that it makes the character much more believable. (I would, however, suggest that she get a vehicle with good air conditioning. Why suffer?)

Just a note on this series. The murder does not happen right away in the book. The author spends time developing the characters before killing them off. So, if you like a mystery that has the death occur quickly, you may be a little disappointed. However, the mysteries are good, and the characters strong. This book is a great addition to the series, and I look forward to upcoming books.

The first book in the series is called "Blue Blood". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars It makes you think..............2002-08-26

This was a very good book that makes you think about how your actions affect other people. It also makes you realize that things are not always the way they seem & people react for reasons that are not always obvious.

This book was well written & keeps you reading to find you what happens next. It can make you laugh as well as cry.

5 out of 5 stars Bike racing, family and hard times make this story ..........2002-07-20

This book reaches into the heart of the American family. It shows that little is what it seems when looking from the outside in. What you think is clear to you, may sometimes be only your view and the sacrifices made by those around you not seen. Everyone can relate to what they believe is unfair treatment by family or those we love. This book shows you how to reach inside your heart and see the other side of the picture, heal the wounds within your heart and seek out a better understanding of others.

We only have hope and faith to guide us through tough times and even though it may feel that you are not lucky, if you have the love of your family and peace in your heart, the healing of your sadness within you can be lessened.

This book will make you think about your own life, your past decisions and give you a sense of direction with how you handle the challenges in your future. If Heaven is as beautiful as shown in this book, then we all should look forward to our visit there.

It shows that no one is perfect, but can still reach the gates. It will make you feel good and cry, but in the end you will remember the lesson within.

    STUDENT REVIEW

The novel Help! I'm Trapped in Obedience School Again was fantastic. Todd Strasser put funny and enthusiastic parts all through the story.

In this novel, the characters were believable. You could almost experience their problems. My favorite must be Foo Foo because she is really, really funny. She jumps all over Lance. The author did a good job on this character with describing the dog and her personality. She is a lovesick, fluffy mop.

In the novel, the author did keep your attention. One of the ways he did this is all the problems popping up one after another. My favorite one is when Jake's in Lance's body.

The main charecters are Lance, Josh, Alex, Andy, and Jessica. The plot in the begging Lance was a hyper puppy. And Jessica and Alex's parents declair that Lance had to go to obedience school. Then Andy, Alex, Josh, and Lance were on a walk. And they deside to go to Mr. Driksons house. Andy and Lance Switch places. This book was unintresting one to me. There were many intersing charecters though. The one I was mainly into was Lance. He is a spectacular charecter.I highly disliked that the book keep draging on and on about the same thing. If you are going to read the other books by this auther then you should read this book. But in my point of view I would not tell someone to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Help! I'm Trapped In Obedience school.......2005-02-04

I highly recommend this book to 4th and 5th grade students. I give this book ****(4) stars and this is why!
Did you ever switch bodies with a dog ? Or have you ever met anyone who has ever switched bodies with something else ? Well guess what? I am about to tell you a story!
This book tells the story of a boy named Jake and his dog who chews on everything.
Jake also has a friend Andy who does not like school. Andy wishes that he was a dog
and did not have to go to school. One day, the boys and the dog Lance went for a walk. They walked to their science teacher's house, Mr. Dirksen's , Jake said there was a machine to switch bodies. The boys did not beleive him and wanted to go see the machine. The boys snuck to the garage and started playing with the machine.
You can guess what happened next!
Josh hits the button by mistake and it turns on, switching Lance and Andy's bodies. Lance is in Andy's body and Andy in Lances body. You have to read this book to find out what kinds of things will happen next.
I highly recommend this book to kids 10 or older, especially if they love animals and funny stories. This book made me laugh but at the same time I also learned to stay away from things that do not belng to me!

I love this book. I'll just say a short summary. Ok, maybe It's not that short, but anyway: Jake is really worring about the fact that Lance, his dog, may either be sent to obideince school, or off to a farm where he'll be sleeping with flea invested mutts and fighting over slabs of meat. But then, he shows his friends the body Switch machine, and his friend Andy gets hit. You can probobly geuss what happens next, so, I rest my case.

Help! Iým trapped in obedience school
      By Carson

I read, help! Iým trapped in obedience school. Itýs written by Todd strasser, and the genre is fiction. He also wrote all the other, help Iým trapped iný books (he wrote the whole series). The plot is that, a boy named Andy, switches bodies with Jakeýs dog, lance (Jake is the main character), and the things they go through at home, school and on the streets.
Andy is gross because he shoots spitballs through his nose. Heýs stubborn because he doesnýt want to turn back into a human because as a dog he gets to be lazy and not wash.
This book is funny because Jake keeps trying to talk to Andy. This makes every one stare at him (they donýt know that Andy is in lance) that happens on page 48, in obedience school.
Jake and Josh some times walk over to Andyýs house, I walk over to my friendýs houses all the time. Jake has a pet and so do i. Jake has a dog, I have reptiles.
Jake is a good kid (heýs not a troublemaker) because he doesnýt give people answers in school, and he doesnýt like it when his friends make fun of his sister. Heýs persistent because he keeps trying to get Andy into his own body even after Andy doesnýt want to, and heýs been made fool of, he even makes up excuses to get Andy into his old body.
Then as soon as Jessica (Jakeýs older sister) says "its time to get groomed" then suddenly Andy doesnýt want to be a dog any more. After that they sneak into Dirksons (dirkson is the science professor) garage so they could use the d.i.t.s. To switch Andy back toýwell Andy. Thereýs only one problemý well you have to find out for your self.

      Can you guess what happened?

        Book Description

This cookbook is a proven classic and a good introduction to vegetarian cooking. Talented cooks from The Farm, a vegetarian community in Tennessee, present a great collection of recipes based on the noble soybean. These tasty, nutritious and economical meals are cholesterol, egg and dairy-free.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars hippie goodness.......2007-09-04

There are two main categories of vegan food, I think -- well, surely there are more, but there's two common in western pop culture. There's the vegan food you like to eat with your non-vegetarian friends, to change their minds: veggie burgers that look like meat, salad dressings where you'd never suspect the cream was tofu, and classy, restaurant-ready fare that seems so 'normal' your friends say things like "I guess the days of lentil loaf and bean sprouts are over!" And then there's this stuff.

And this is the truly good stuff. The people on The Farm, I don't know how they did it... a great mail-order business, Ina May's pioneering work in midwifery (Ina May's Guide to Childbirth), and a cookbook that helped push forward the vegan movement way back in 1975. These people had a huge cultural effect for one little hippy commune. Anyway, on to the food:

If you read the New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook from cover to cover (which, unlike most cookbooks, you can) you'll learn how to:
        - prepare beans
        - make TVP meatballs
        - make tortillas, bake bread, pizza dough
        - sprout seeds
        - make knishes
        - make gluten
        - prepare soymilk
        - skim yuba from cooking soymilk
        - make tempeh from scratch (fascinating; looks very difficult)

The food prep instructions and recipes in the New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook make up a vegan 101 I wouldn't have been willing to read and absorb until fairly recently. It'll be popular with you if you're (1) already health-minded, (2) value non-processed foods enough to do the work, (3) organized food-wise, and willing to do things like leave the beans to soak the night before. There are some quick recipes, but if you're more of a ten-minute cook I'd recommend instead you get How It All Vegan! or (even simpler) the Soy, Not Oi! cook-zine.

Recipes in the Farm book include Soysage, Tofu Onion Quiche, Gluten Roast, Tempeh Sauerbraten, Millet And Peas, Granola and many other hippie classics plus lots of other great soups, spreads, main dishes, desserts, breads, and a small section about pregnancy and having kids as a vegan.

I just made their macaroni and 'cheese' made with nutritional yeast (Nutritional Yeast, Shaker (Red Star), 5 oz._; a product I've never used much of before but which features in this book prominently. It was much, much better than the OK (but more convenient) boxed stuff Roads End Organics sells: Road's End Organics Dairy-Free Pasta Shells & Chreese, Cheddar Style, 6.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 12). I was glad the recipe worked out because I'd been kind of daunted by nutritional yeast for awhile.

After the utility of this book I think I most appreciate the earnestness. Lentil loaf is good. Do not be ashamed! The Farm cooks also understand you don't want to support the corporate food giants, get your B12 from a pill or fortified anything, or buy a soy product you can't describe the manufacture of. If How It All Vegan is high school, the Farm Cookbook is college. The photograps of commune cooks stirring the baked beans in their mumus are also great.

One more point -- if you were to wholeheartedly adopt these recipes and food lifestyle as the book lays out, you would save a lot of money. (You can tell the Farm folks cooked for economy when they warn you to watch out for added mercury if you buy your soybeans at an animal-feed supply store.) The way most vegans and vegetarians in the west eat today doesn't represent much in the way of savings, because our processed foods, even if they're made of cheap ingredients, cost quite a bit. (Think of Yves slices, or commercial fake parmesan.) These people made awesome food at home from the cheapest, most straightforward and whole foods available. That's cool. Thank you hippies.

4 out of 5 stars New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook.......2007-08-16

A good book to add to the shelf. Needs some updating to reflect the vast variety of vegan items now available in supermarkets.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for vegetarians in nonveggie conscious areas.......2007-08-11

This book is great. I am currently living in an area where there is neither a health food store or any great variety in the grocery store. I have found this book a life saver and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Most items can be found at the regular grocery store and those that are not readily available there can be found easily online. I can not give this book enough praise. It is easy to read and follow and gives you a great place to begin experimenting on your own.

5 out of 5 stars the vegan joy of cooking.......2007-06-19

This cookbook provides all the basic needed to make your own tofu, vital gluten, and tempeh.I consider this a foundation to vegan cooking. This is a must have cookbook for those who want to save money and eat healthy vegan fare.

        5 out of 5 stars Judging A book By It's Cover.......2007-01-20

If you judged my copy of this book by it's cover, you would know that it's one of the great ones. My cover is loose, torn in spots, and the pages are full of splotches and blotches. And this is my second copy of the book! I am about to order my third. This has a lot of basic, helpful, and pretty good recipes. When my kids were small, this book was my vegan cooking bible. I made tofu, soysage, yogurt, and soymilk all the time, and my kids loved the eggless eggnog and ice cream very much. My oldest son asked me to make this eggnog again after not having had it for some 13 years. He remembered the taste and flavor, and that it was very good. He doesn't like all the dairy varieties people have made him over the years, and this was the one he remembered, and wanted. The instructions that come with the recipes in this book are very thorough, and even a very unsure cook can have excellent results. I have a lot of cookbooks by "Farmers" and all are quite good. This remains a favorite despite the passage of 20 some years since I first discovered it. The pictures and illustrations are wonderfully evocative of a different time and place. We have severe allergies, and I have yet to find a commercial soymilk as good as the stuff I used to make every week. Louise Hagler also has two very good tofu cookbooks that I like, and Dorothy Bates has written many cookbooks. This one is a true classic, and deservedly so. It's quirky and sweet, and holds a special place in my affections.

Want to do something with your puppy or dog that makes use of their natural talent? You'll want to do tracking and Carolyn has made it easy for you to try it out! She tells you what you'll need for equipment, how to draw a track diagram, and how to keep a diary and why. She addresses when to start with your puppy and how your pup can have a title before it's a year old. Don't have a puppy but still want to try? No problem she covers that too! Get hooked on tracking!

Carolyn was a guest member in February 2006 on CSDogBookReview (YahooGroups). After reading her book and listening to her discusions I've started tracking with my two four year old dogs. They're loving it!

            Thanks Carolyn!

This was a easy-to-follow guide for me to start training my puppy to track, and her methods are working well on my 5 year old dog as well. I would without hesitation recommend this book for anyone considering starting their puppy or dog in tracking.

                              Book Description

Winner of the Society for Arabian Studies Grant in 2003. This study examines a view '`from outside' of the three terminals: Makran, Muscat and Zanzibar which is a partial one in the history of the western Indian Ocean. Such themes are, however, essential when viewed against the background of Anglo-French rivalry in the Gulf and Indian Ocean during the first half of the nineteenth century, and are central to numerous debates. The methodological perspective, therefore, whilst concerned with oriental figures and events, is still largely based on sources in western languages precisely because it concentrates on the relations between Saʾ îd bin Sulṭân Âl Bû Saʾ îdî (r. 1806-1856), the Arab-Omani sovereign of Muscat and Zanzibar, and Europe, and on Baluch presence in Oman and in East Africa.

                                Book Description

This book marks the publication of the first major biography of the fascinating, heroic and revolutionary life of Bertha Pappenheim (1859-1936). Bertha Pappenheim became a legend twice: first, in Vienna, under the pseudonym "Anna O.", when she cured herself of hysterical symptoms by telling fairy tales which she termed "the talking cure", upon which Sigmund Freud based his theory of psychoanalysis. She became an historical legend again, in Germany, as the founder of the first Jewish feminist movement. Through her iconoclastic literary writings, social work, spiritual and social activism for Jewish orphans, abandoned wives, prostitutes, unwed mothers, and girls sold into white slavery, Bertha Pappenheim became one of the most famous Jewish women in Europe at the turn of the last century.

                                Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The Enigma of confused feminist history.......2004-05-29

The case of Anna O., the founding case of psychoanalysis, is an endless source of fascination to each new generation of readers. As the work of Ellenberger and Hirschmuller showed, the "prototypal case of cathartic cure" was neither cathartic nor a cure. Both Freud and Breur in writing up the case as a success engaged in deception to an extent that would be regarded as scientific misconduct today.

Historical revision of the case has resulted in dozens of attempts to review the story in the light of modern thinking, many of them highly worthwhle exercises in diagnosis or historianship. In the process, we are learning something more of the neglected and highly interesting life of the real person behind the case, Bertha Pappenheim, who went on to be a pioneer social worker, children's writer, religious figure and intellectual.

Unfortunately, readers who are hoping for a dispassionate and intriguing voyage into the life of Ms Pappenheim are going to be disappointed by this book, which teeters between a romantically confused sophomoric thesis and a plaintive attempt at public writing therapy. Anyone who doubts this need only read the emetic acknowlegement, going on for many pages, before the actual text commences. After that, it is a steady path downhill.

The author appears to have no capacity for independent thought and constantly picks from such dubious sources as "feminist French lacanians" to justify her insistent lament that Anna O. was yet another victimised Victorian female who somehow managed to create psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, social work and goodness knows what else. About the only consistent conclusion that can be drawn from this nursery school thinking is that if feminist historians are going to produce work that is critical, deep and intellectually honest, this is not the way to go about it.

There are good books on Anna O. and Bertha Pappenheim, for example by Ellenberger and Hirschmuller, and more should follow. This self-indulgent work of second-rate scholarship and third-rate history is not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars One great book........2001-08-30

This well-researched and engaging biography broadens the awarenesses of psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, historians of Europe in the past century and of Jewish history, and feminists. Knowing Anna O.'s enormously influential life trajectory sends a message of which we need continual reminders: someone can suffer from severe mental illness in one phase of his/her life and emerge from the experience strong and heroic, making powerfully contructive contributions.
And read Gail Hornstein's "To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World:The Life of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann" - they complement each other beautifully.
