Book Description

With his Frederick Troy series, John Lawton has been compared to such top historical espionage writers as John le Carré and Len Deighton. Now, in this prequel to Black Out, Lawton transports readers to 1941 London during the German Blitz, brilliantly re-creating the era of ration tickets, air raids, and bomb shelters.

Wolfgang Stahl, an American spy operating undercover as an SS officer, has fled Germany with Hitler's secret blueprints for the invasion of Russia. As American, British, and German operatives race through war-torn London in search of the spy, bodies begin to pile up and the question arises: Are Stahl and his American contact being played by one of their own? In this game of spy vs. spy, only Sergeant Troy of Scotland Yard will be shrewd enough to uncover the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric thriller set in the London of 1941.......2005-07-22

This is my first read of the "Inspector Troy" series which I gather has many fans.

The time is 1941. An Austrian close to SS factotum Reinhard Heydrich is a spy for the Americans and about to be uncovered. Hurriedly, he fakes his death in an air raid and runs. To where, we don't yet know.

Calvin Cormack, a U.S. Army intelligence officer in Zurich is told to go to London. In London, Cormack, the son of a Congressman who is against American involvement in Europe, is teamed with Walter Stilton, a seemingly plodding Special Branch Inspector.

Stahl, the fugitive Austrian, is in England: so Cormack believes.

The search by Stilton and Cormack begins and the bodies start dropping soon enough. Cormack is drawn into the family life of Stilton and Lawton weaves a plot that beautifully brings in English life, American politics and the family of Freddie Troy. Troy is a homicide detective for Scotland Yard.

Lawton does a nice job of sketching out his characters. Interestingly, Troy plays an almost secondary role, although he is the ultimate hero of the book. The novel does move along nicely, but it is so laden with detail that it does seem to slow down from time to time.

Overall, Lawton does a wonderful job of creating the atmosphere of 1941 London. The characters are all believable, the story more complex on a personal level than most mysteries and the plot doesn't have any disturbing jumps. Overall, a very entertaining read.

3 out of 5 stars Good on atmosphere, but the characters & plot didn't grab me.......2005-01-06

I haven't read any of the other Inspector Troy novels; I picked up this one because the jacket's reviews were attractive. I realize now that the review excerpts focused on what I liked about the book (its terrific recreation of a time & place) and were silent on what didn't grab me (the characters & plot).

It's almost worth reading just for the "feel." This is what it must've been like to sit around the kitchen table of a middle-class London policeman in Spring of 1941.

But while the novel is literate and well-written, there's something distancing about it. I found Troy the less interesting and less sharply delineated of the two major characters (Troy and an American soldier, Cal Cormack), and Lawton spends much more time on Cormack. The spy / murder-mystery plot plays out without much momentum; better are the glimpses of the internal politics of the police force and diplomatic services.

I expect I'd like Bluffing Mr. Churchill much more if I already had some investment in the continuing characters. I doubt I'll hunt out the other books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Lawton Is Now on My "A" List.......2004-10-28

I began this series out of sequence with "Old Flames", a very clever 1950s spy thriller. This novel picks up Inspector Troy's career at an earlier stage, during WW II, but before the action of "Black Out". Though Troy doesn't get center stage, this is still an excellent story, with its fascinating picture of early 1940s London and the last few months before its two biggest players, the US and USSR, entered the war.

Recommended, in spite of a couple of others here thinking that a prior UK publication is grounds to knock a perfectly good novel.

2 out of 5 stars Vastly inferior to the earlier Inspector Troy books.......2004-08-04

I liked Black Out and Old Flames, but this book just isn't worth the money. John Lawton ought to give me a free coupon to his next book--it HAS to be better.

Poor plot, very little time with Inspector Troy, and everybody and every situation is one-dimensional.

Re-read the earlier books and wait for your library to order this one.

        Book Description

A book of choice for the lover of mystical tales and mysteries, this series of related short stories is a work in which fiction and fact combine to give insights to spiritual paths and fantastical events. Mr. K. Nakamura is a fictionalized dealer in artwork and antiquities in Kyoto, well-schooled in the legendry and lore of his country. He has the shrewdness of a successful businessman combined with a magical air. Each story presents a situation in which there is no clear demarcation between the commonplace and the supernatural, where strange happenings and powers appear to be taken for granted.

          Book Description

This is an omnibus of two early novels in L.E. Modesitts Ecolitan Matter series, The Ecolitan Operation and The Ecologic Secession. The series deals with the conflict between the old and corrupt interstellar Empire, and the Ecolitan Institute of the planet Accord. The Institute ostensibly a training academy in ecology, is in reality a progressive force reminsicent of Isaac Asimovs Foundation. Both novels were initially published as mass market originals and are now out of print. The two books form a complete story arc.

          5 out of 5 stars A Hero Gone Rogue.......2004-06-09

Empire & Ecolitan (2001) is an omnibus edition of the first and second novels in The Ecolitan Matter series according to the internal chronology. It includes The Ecolitan Operation and The Ecologic Secession.

The United Confederation of Independent Worlds -- otherwise known as the Empire -- is an hegemony of over 190 worlds plus their colonies and other dependencies. The capital of the Empire is at New Augusta on Terra, although many support functions are based off-planet, particularly on Alphane.

The Emperor is the titular head of the United Confederation, but most power resides in the Senate. The Empire nominally includes about fifty semi-autonomous planets on the fringes. The largest principality in this region is the Conglomerate of Fuard, which is aggressively flaunting its military might.

The Empire has long ago ceased to work for the welfare of its member planets, but instead has strived for maintenance of the status quo and perpetuation of the institutions of the Empire itself. The dependent worlds have been hit the hardest with increased taxes and conscripted troops. Armed rebellions have occurred sporadically throughout the colonies.

In The Ecolitan Operation (1989), Major Jimjoy Earle Wright III is a Special Operative for the Imperial Space Service who manages to successfully complete the most difficult missions, but who displeases his superiors with the intemperate violence of his methods. They would prefer something more subtle, but Jimjoy does whatever must be done to achieve the objective. In his current mission, he causes a fusion plant explosion to kill off the Halstani High Command, but has a collateral kill count of over fifty thousand bystanders. His case officer sends him next to Accord to report on the Ecolitan Institute, but the Empire has a lethal surprise waiting for him on the planet.

In The Ecologic Seccession (1990), Jimjoy is now Ecolitan Professor James Joyson Whaler II, Senior Fellow of the Institute. The Empire believes that he is dead and hopefully they will continue to do so. Jimjoy has created a new department within the Institute -- Applied Ecologic Management -- which is actually the new Special Operations branch. It is clear to Jimjoy and to the Ecolitan Prime that the Empire will soon be imposing more stringent controls on Accord and that the planet must rebel to keep its liberty. As a first step, Jimjoy single-handedly destroys the System Control station at Haversol.

These novels are mostly about the ethics of violence, personal and social. All ethics are contingent upon survival; i.e., survival of yourself or your descendants or your group is a prime concern. However, certain methods of survival are wrong, for they destroy they very things you wish to preserve. These novels explore the ethical limits of defense of a society -- that is, a large group of people -- which is threatened by external forces. What types and degrees of violence are legitimate under those circumstances? Are civilians legitimate targets of violence and, if so, under what conditions? The author raises some interesting questions, but more importantly, he points out the uncertainties surrounding all such issues.

Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of political intrigue and special operations with a touch of romance.

5 out of 5 stars Great book: interesting characters and plot........2001-07-03

This book was originally published as a duology (The Ecologic Operation and The Ecologic Secession...search under these titles for more reviews), but the transition between the two books is seamless so reprinting as a single book works well.

This book keeps you turning the pages with interesting characters, great action scenes, and a nicely tuned plot. If you are an avid book reader you will find similarities in style and plot to a number of other great series such as Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, Piers Anthony's Bio of a Space Tyrant, and Chris Brunch's Matador.

You might also want to check out The Ecologic Envoy which takes place 400 years after this book.

He is ambushed by Imperial agents before he can even check into a hotel.

Jimjoy recognizes the agent who gets away and decides to accept an invitation from the Institute to stay in their facilities. He had wanted to get a feel for the planet before approaching the Institute, but the security aspects seem more important after the attempted assassination. The Ecolitan Prime himself greets Jimjoy when he arrives at the Institute and assures him that he has complete freedom of access to the computers, buildings and classes.

Rumors precede him and he is the subject of many speculations. The Institute provides him a daily itinerary of classes and events which he might want to attend and he is soon impressed by their expertise in genetics and other subjects as well as the accessibility of works that are proscribed in the Empire. He soon becomes a regular participant in the unarmed combat classes.

When Jimjoy is ready to return to the Empire, he enlists the aid of Ecolitan Thelina Andruz to bypass the traps which are surely awaiting him. After returning, he prepares a little insurance before reporting back to his case officer. After a stormy debrief, Jimjoy is hustled off-planet to the hotspot on the New Kansaw on another impossible mission.

In this story, Jimjoy is almost terminated with extreme prejudice by his own organization in several instances in addition to the normal risks of his occupation. Despite a strong sense of loyalty, he begins to understand that there is no place for him in the Empire. He starts to become obsessed by the need to get back to the Institute on Accord, where he has found the only acceptance in his stormy life.

Jimjoy has other reasons to return to Accord, including Ecolitan Thelina. He believes that he loves her, although she confuses and angers him. Nonetheless, Jimjoy is stubborn and perseveres in his pursuit of the lady despite all reproofs.

Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of special operations with a touch of offbeat romance.

          5 out of 5 stars Lessons on Courage,Character,Clear thinking........2001-01-30

What else can I say? I too have a dog-eared old copy that I re-read. It's like an operating manual of tenacity, logic and ultimate ethics for the human spirit...maintaining a perceptive interface with the ignorant machinations of so-called humanity.

The Hero's name,"Major Jim-Joy Earl Wright, Secret Agent of the Empire" gave me to believe that this was just another shoot 'em up space opera. Not so! A clever, technically plausible, mind-bending tale that is hard to put down. You might keep your copy around for reference purposes too; and keep your scotch tape handy because your copy may get a lot of wear.

3 out of 5 stars Columbo meets James Bond.......2000-07-21

What's the attraction for this book? My copy is thumbeared and worn, and I still read it at least twice a year, and I have a first edition from 1989. The attraction is simple. It and it's sequel, The Ecologic Secession are straight forward action books on level and highly charged emotional scences on other levels. I introduced my wife to Sci Fi with the "Secession" because it's a love story and a space opera wrapped up in one. But you can't really enjoy the Secession with out reading this book. For those who have never had the pleasure, enjoy!

I bought this book along with another BBQing book and I have several other cook books. I found this one very easy to pick up and read through. It has good tip, and re-enforces tips on the sides of the page. Great recipes and just enough background stories and info to make it an entertaining book to read.

I am just starting out in real BBQ and I am grabbing this book over others for ideas and recipes. I would say this is great book for beginner and intermediate smoker/BBQ enthusiast

2 out of 5 stars May not be what you think.......2006-07-04

This book does not really deal with the process of low and slow barbecuing in any great detail: For that I was very disappointed.

The whole topic is covered in the first twelve or so pages of Chapter One. The emphasis is placed on charcoal or propane as seen on pages 19 thru 22 and which the author calls "Grilling Techniques at a Glance." However, in a true barbecue text, I don't want to see any mention of cooking temps above 250 degrees, or searing, or "chamber temperatures of 500 to 700 degrees."

He does make mention of low and slow in his "Master Barbecue Chart" (which is a good quick reference) on page 28. The twenty pages from 16-36 are all you get about how to smoke, and all the tips, secrets, equipment, etc. That's 20 pages out of 207 total.

The remainder of the book consists of a chapter on "How Barbecue Changed My life" and the rest is recipes. While the recipes at first perusal look good, I would have titled the book "Lots of Recipes and a Few Pages of Pretty Standard Tips But No Real Secrets."

            5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2006-04-08

I bought this book at Williams-Sonoma last summer, and it has been a terrific buy. The book includes both "real" slow-cook Barbecue recipies, as well as recipies that work very well on the gas grill. I have made many of the grilling recipies (his "cheater ribs" and the southwest chicken wings have won me great praise), and have just purchase a Weber SMC to try the real barbecue recipies. I even bought a copy for a friend.

            This is a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Good book written by a person who is definitely dedicated to BBQ.......2005-10-27

To say that Ron Shewchuk has been bitten but the BBQ bug is a gross understatement. He has worked hard to gain a tremendous knowledge base which is evident in his book. There is lots of advise on preparation as well as some really fine recipes. The book is well written and is a definite credit to my reference materials.

            5 out of 5 stars I work with dogs.......2002-08-28

I love beagles and this is a terrific book. Beagles are my favorite dogs. They are the reason I'm involved in the animal rights movement. Beagles are a special dog, and David and Hazel know what they're talking about. God bless them both.

            5 out of 5 stars BEAGLES -- THEY'RE CHAMPIONSHIP DOGS TO ME.......2000-10-31

This book is an excellent manual of beagle care from breeding to health care to show preparation. The photographs are superb and the authors have really done their homework in presenting the information. The book is written in a plain, clear style that will not only sustain the readers' interest, but will also help keep readers informed about the care and temperament of this wonderful breed.

As the owner of a beagle, I am so glad this book exists. For people who are "prospective beagle owners," I would highly suggest that they do get a beagle and see what wonderful companions and loving pets beagles really are.

            5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-02-01

This is a great book for anyone who has a new beagle or who is thinking about getting a beagle. Everything you need or want to know is right here. I definitely reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for every kind of owner.......2000-01-13

As a prospective Beagle owner with many questions. I found this book the most informative of all I have bought and read. For every question that I had, it had the answer. It covers everything from selecting and houstraining, to training and showing. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to raise a Beagle

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for new, prospective, or experienced beaglers.......1999-01-26

This may be the handiest guide to beagle (or other dog) ownership I have enountered. Having been a breeder of Champion Beagles, as well as an instructor in Obedience and Conformation showing for some 12 years, I have read most available books on beagles, puppy selection, training, and care. If I had any literary talent, this book is the way I'd like to express my thoughts. It is complete, thorough, and well stated. It is not so complex as to lose a novice owner, and is not so simple to make the subject dry. Thank you, Hazel and David Arnold. We liked the pictures, too!!

              Book Description

Lorenzo de'Medici was a passionate collector of objects from antiquity and the post-antiquity period as well as an important patron of the arts in fifteenth century Florence. His activities as a collector are documented in a group of 173 previously unknown letters included in this volume. As revealed in these letters, Lorenzo had a preference for small objects: coins, hardstone vases, and gems. This book reveals how such objects were studied, displayed, selected and valued by de'Medici and other collectors during this period.

                  1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected........2007-05-12

This book was a dissapointment for me. I don't have an unlimited budget for store design and most of the businesses featured in this book clearly did. There are a few exceptions to this in the book, but if you're a small business looking for ideas to freshen up your store, I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not relavent for most businesses.......2007-02-25

This book is basically just a picture book of expensive stores most of us can't afford to shop in (the ones with 2 pairs of shoes on one entire wall, and 3 items on fancy hangers on the other wall). Most of the displays are designed so specifically around the products so it's difficult to even use the pictures as inspitration for different types of merchandise.

We got much more inspiration from the book "Store Presentation & Design" by Vsiual Reference Publications.

                    Book Description

The new generation of shops and retail fashion environments must use every competitive edge to capture new buyers-from street level to shelf level. Shopping epicenters, brand flagship stores, and so-called guerrilla stores-all the environments in which we shop-are often charged by their architecture. This book looks back over 30 years of architecture that served to brand such fashion houses and designers as Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Elio Fiorucci, and Rei Kawakubo, expressing each individual's particular identity through his store's architecture. These retail environments are built on innovation, surprise, flexibility, mutability, pliability, and prestige-while also offering the legitimacy that sophisticated architecture has always brought to commerce and enterprise. The collaboration between fashion and architecture is a relationship that continues to fascinate both professionals and fashion customers alike.

Store windows no.10 is like the bag of Marry Popins: every time I thumbed the pages, looking for new, non-conventional ideas to a new store window I need to do - I found few of them. No need to be an excellent English reader, the pictures speak for themselfs.

                                        Book Description

The Department of Defense has an identified need to update the practice, policy, and law applied to Joint Officer Management and Joint Professional Military Education. As a lead-in to this study, the 2005 Joint Officer Management Census survey polled officers serving in billets. The authors examine the extent to which officers believe their jobs provide them with joint experience or require joint education or experience and examine how respondents' answers differ across organizations.

                                                Book Description

This work is an in-depth analysis of the full breadth of Sojourner Truth's public discourse that places it in its proper historical context and explores the use of humor and narratives as primary rhetorical strategies used by this illiterate ex-slave to create a powerful public persona. The book provides a comprehensive survey of the life of Sojourner Truth, and includes a unique and authoritative compilation of primary rhetorical documents, such as speeches, songs, and public letters. This is the only major work to date that analyzes the breadth of Sojourner Truth's public discourse. The volume includes a complete and authoritative compilation of her extant rhetoric, including several versions of the same speech, reports of her speaking appearances, public letters published by Truth in newspapers, and songs written and performed by her as part of her public lectures. Three chapters address the rhetorical dimensions of Truth's public persona. First, an historical survey contextualizes her life and speaking from slave to reformer, placing into perspective the variety of experiences that comprised her background. Second, an analysis of Truth's use of humor focuses upon how she employed the strategies of superiority and incongruity in her refutation of opponents and the establishment of her own credibility. Third, a critique of Truth's use of narratives in her discourse reveals how both her speeches and songs rely upon three fundamental stories for their persuasive impact: her slave life and religious conversion, her use of the black jeremiad to portray race differences, and her tales of woman's strength and moral conviction. The volume concludes with a consideration of Truth's status as a "folk legend" and how she wished to be remembered.
