    Book Description

    DEATH ASSURANCE

After signing a lucrative deal to remodel Bride’s Bed and Breakfast, island contractor Josie Pigeon thinks her summer is set. And with her upcoming nuptials to Sam Richardson, she’s definitely in the marriage mood–that is, until a series of unfortunate events befalls the construction site.

First, Josie’s wealthy employer hires his inexperienced, twenty-year-old grandson as architect of the project; soon after, the only male member on Josie’s crew is causing problems–romantic as well as professional; and then her insurance company is threatening to cancel coverage for her entire staff. To top it all off, there are rumors that the B&B is haunted, and mannequins are turning up behind the walls of the inn. They appear to be the exploits of a prankster–until a real corpse is found, revealing the sinister handiwork of a cold-blooded killer.

“Valerie Wolzien is a consummate crime writer. Her heroines sparkle as they sift through clues and stir up evidence in the darker, deadly side of suburbia.”

        Do you cherish privacy?

What would you sacrifice to keep your privacy safe? Who would you sacrifice to keep it? In the blink of an eye, in the ebb of a daydream we go to a place called Meeshick where our most private thoughts are revealed in the chamber of Baharan. Those responsible for safeguarding the chamber are called the Nestorian Knights. They are charged with protecting your thoughts and feelings so that no one else can get to them. But what would happen if they lost the key to the chamber where all your thoughts and feelings are kept? What would you do?

This is a story of Elise Witherspoon, a young girl trying to manage her hectic life at Covington High School and deal with her eccentric parents. What she doesn't know is that her parents are Nestorian Knights, the very same people charged with protecting our innermost feelings and secrets. Follow Elise as she learns of her heritage as a Nestorian Knight and struggles to accept the responsibility of protecting all of mankind's thoughts and feelings.

Subtitled "Cloudships Of Orion" - these ships harvest tritium & other
fusion-fuels from comets, nebulae & protostars - a fine and somewhat
        Benfordian backstory.

"Siduri's Net" is a newish cloudship, still paying back her
constructon loan. "Net" has a Gypsy sailmaster and Greek captain & pilot,
in a Slav-majority ship and culture. "Net"s parent-ship dumped most of
her non-Slavs into the new hull. A Russian-dominated planet is the sole
customer for both cloudships, and is maneuvering to take over the 'ships to
cut their fuel costs. Eastern-Europe political & ethnic tensions, translated to
a mid-future setting, is the most distinctive feature of the book, her best to
date. The sequel is "Maia's Veil" (Roc pb, 1995); I'm happy to report that
        "Net" is a self-contained story.

PS: "Maia's" is also good, if not quite up to the first. There is a 3rd book
out in the series, which I haven't yet read.

Also note that "PK McAllister" = Paula King = Paula Downing. I don't know why she has so many identities.

        Happy reading--

Read 1, you'll want to read the rest. Great Sci-fi series. The main character is of Gypsy descent, it was a real eye opener seeing life & space from a Gypsy point of view.

        3 out of 5 stars Siduri's Net - Family and Adventure.......2000-04-07

Siduri's Net (The Cloudships of Orion, Book #1) reminded me of C. J. Cherry's "Finity's End" in terms of family/ship relationships with a whole new industry thrown in - starfield mining. The perspective, however, is totally different for North American readers: Slavs, Czechs, Greeks, Gypsies (Roms), Russkis- trying to work together AND trying to maintain their own cultures. Then we learn the "science" of harvesting starfields and "cloudship sailing". Somehow, I kept waiting for the action; about half-way through I realized it wasn't the action that mattered but the people. This book finishes its storyline satisfactorily, leaves you wanting more cloudship adventures without leaving any obvious loose ends.

Really great book for my daughter who is a college student and does not know how to cook at all. It was a xmas gift for her and she has already made two dishes out of it and is very proud of herself.

4 out of 5 stars great basic recipes.......2006-11-20

I bought this book at a public book show put on by Scholastic outside a cafe where I sometimes eat lunch. I'm not unfamiliar with the kitchen and cooking, although I'm by no means a gourmet. But I've long been embarrassed by the fact that I just plain didn't know how to make a lot of "basic" items that a lot of cooks learn from experience. There were also a lot of gaps in my knowledge: for example, I knew what separated eggs were but I didn't know how to do it without making a gawdawful mess and imperfectly separated parts.

Enter this book. It's got a lot of good basic stuff, the kind that doesn't require expensive ingredients or unusual cooking implements. It's more than enough for good meal planning and many of the recipes are useful for the fairly competent cook who just wants something quick and cheap, but still tasty. The format of the recipes is also very easy to follow: ingredients are listed in the order of appearance and there are notes that explain timing issues ("while you are waiting for this to happen, do that.") There are also useful sidebars about various cooking-related issues; including, to continue my example above, one about methods for separating eggs.

Those looking for more adventure in the kitchen are probably going to be sorely let down, and mentions of microwaves are few and far between. But for someone looking for the basics in order to facilitate good meals and meal planning with good time management, this is an excellent choice...even if the title is a little bit embarrassing.

5 out of 5 stars Good for any beginner.......2006-09-06

For a person who normally burns food and can't get things right, this is definitely the book for you. I've had great success with all the recipes I've done so far and couldn't say more about it. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who is new to cooking and doesn't want to deal with any elaborate, complicated ingredients. I recommend the book so much I think I may end up buying my brother a copy so that he can use in college :)

        Book Description

Behold the mutt, not only the most popular “breed” in America—comprising 60 percent of the dogs owned by this nation of dog lovers—but also one of the hottest. A lively magnum opus of mutts, The Underdog marries appreciation and practical care in an unexpected book, illustrated throughout with soulful work from artists and photographers like Bruce Weber, Mary Ellen Mark, Robert Risko, Marisa Acocella, and Danny Gregory. Learn mutt history and lore and meet famous mutts, past and present. Celebrate cinematic and literary mutts. Discover the “Mutt Family Tree”—profiles and photos of 75 classic mutt types, from the Rottie mix to the “Heinz 57” (your guess is as good as anyone’s). Plus how mutts differ from their purebred cousins (they tend to live longer, for one thing) and how to be the very best mutt parent you can be, with a comprehensive nuts-and-bolts primer beginning with how to choose your mutt. An appendix connects mutt owners to a universe of products and services, from the only dog seat belt worth buying to the ritziest doggie day care facilities.

As fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi said, “A mutt is couture—it’s the only one like it in the world, made especially for you.”

5 out of 5 stars Celebrate the Mutt!.......2007-04-09

The Underdog is a delightful read especially for all of us who find our special dogs of mysterious ancestry and take them into our homes and our hearts!

5 out of 5 stars Great read full of useful info and lots of hilarious dog pictures!.......2007-02-02

This book is a must for dog lovers. It's full of information about adoption (the ethical choice for bringing a dog into your life as opposed to puppy mill dogs from the pet shop) and tells you exactly how to do it, where to go, what you need, and how to handle the new dog once he is brought home. It really is THE step by step book on the shelter adoption process.

The celebration of mutts in this book is infectious. The pictures are hilarious and one can't help but laugh while learning all kinds of interesting trivia about these lovable mutts.

The author does a terrific job of helping you figure out what kind of mutt is sharing your life. Extremely well researched, this book is a great read because you can pick it up anywhere and enjoy.

A wonderful gift book for dog lovers and for people who are thinking of sharing their life with the greatest friends on the planet! Timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Sets the record straight on many mutt myths.......2006-08-02

What a fun book! Szabo does a great job organizing her book into fun-to-read segments interspersed with news articles, editorials, and pictures of cutie-pie pups. I thought I knew almost everything about mutts after adopting them (through a shelter and off the street) and after spending significant time at our local humane society. Nope -- Szabo taught me the cons of "no-kill" shelters and changed my personal definition of what constitutes a "Mutt." Furthermore, she brings to light several little-known, important facts about the "designer" dogs (such as the doodles).

This book is also a wonderful guide for anyone considering adopting a mutt, pure breed, or "designer" dog.

Remember: Spay and Neuter your pets! There is no reason you should have an intact animal unless you are a certified breeder.

5 out of 5 stars The Underdog: A Celebration of Mutts.......2006-07-10

What a wonderful book on dogs who have mixed lineage. I have a wonderful mutt and what the book says about having the good qualities of the breeds is very right. At times, though the qualities that aren't so great come up. The book is very well written and is a must for anyone who has ever had a loveable mutt. Those who have never had a "mixed breed" should think about it. There are many at the local shelters to be adopted.
You who are thinking of getting a dog this is a must read.
Those of you who are buying the book.....Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful and entertaining book!.......2006-01-10

Finally mutts get the respect that they deserve! A wonderful book packed with both useful and fun information. Be sure to check out the "Mutt Family Tree" section. I have three mutts and always enjoy trying to figure out "the mystery of the mix".

5 out of 5 stars Going, Going Great!.......1999-12-09

My husband got Going, Going Gone out of the library and read it, I read it, my Dad read it, we all liked it. This book catalogs many of those things our moms, dads and grandparents used or did in daily life that are vanishing through changes in society or technology: carbon paper, rotary phone, garter belts, or mending socks for example. The book describes the things that lead to the phasing out of the old products and methods. The photocopier killed carbon paper for example. The only down side I can see is that the book is too short. My Dad thought it was written from a slightly feminist point of view, but I didn't really notice it. I am writing this review before buying 2 copies for Christmas presents.

3 out of 5 stars 50 short essays on obsolete elements of American life.......1997-04-17

The authors provide two to three page essays with a touch of nostalgiaon fifty specific elements of American life in years gone by. Subjects range from the highly tangible (drive-in movies, manual typewriters) to activities (hitchhiking, bridge parties) to abstract social norms (formal dating, parietal rules on college campuses). The strength of the book may well lie in its myriad of photographs that complement each essay extraordinarily well. The topics covered reinforce the fact that the authors are female (feminine hygiene products, white gloves, and mending, to name a few), and the reader will no doubt frequently ask himself or herself "why didn't they include this idea?&quot

I've been a sewer for years and have just begun quilting. I've purchased several "how to" and pattern books by different authors in order to get a feel for the quilting and design process. Judy's book is THE BEST. It is very readable and all instructions are clearly written. Her tips on cutting and sewing pieces THAT FIT TOGETHER are easy and logical and make the piecing process foolproof. Her approach truly does empower a quilter. Hats off!

The text in Judy Martin's Creative Pattern book is extremely well written and is very easy to understand. Every quilter should read the 7 Secrets of Sewing Success in this book. Each of the 12 patterns have several variations showing details of the fabric, color and quilting. This book is one that you will use often as it has everything you want in a quilt book.

While the construction methods given are old-fashioned, this book is full of marvleous examples and ideas for creating your own Seminole Patchwork designs. Beverly Rush gives easy-to-understand instructions, plenty of background material, and a super foundation for taking this technique in many different directions. The photos of her work are very inspiring - I bought it because of the inside back cover illustrations, but now it's my favorite book on the subject. Definitely a must-have for anyone interested in the topic.

          3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed..........2005-04-30

I was hoping to find a quilting book with good projects for a beginner quilter. The projects are cute and appear to be easy. After attempting a couple of projects, I realized that there are holes in the directions, and assumptions that the person doing the project will "just know" what to do to fill in the gaps. The pictures aren't actually a guide, as you can't tell what's being done in them. I guess I'll just have to keep looking for a book that is actually good for a beginner!

5 out of 5 stars Truly an awesome quilting book!.......2003-04-24

I was looking for a good all-around book on quilting, that had basic tips and guidelines as well as a variety of projects. This book most definitely fits the bill!

It contains detailed sections on historical background, fabrics, techniques, tips, and has lots of full-color photographs that are very clear and easy to follow (not to mention gorgeously done).

The projects included are beautiful and unique, not your regular log cabin/flying geese quilt block fare. There are a number of different quilting styles explored that create some truly stunning items: clothing, home decorating, accessories, toys, linens, and more.

Many of the fun items are perfect for gift-giving (if you can bear to give them away and not keep them for yourself!). The book delves into the use of lots of other fabrics for quilting from silks to batiks, even PVC, so it's not just your granny's 100% cotton calicos any more!

I guarantee that just flipping through the book you'll find at least five projects that you'll want to get started with.

Best of all, it approaches all the projects with a very simple yet casual attitude, demystifying what appear to be impossible techniques and fabric usage, making "advanced" quilting accessible to crafters of all skill levels.

The book itself is not all that large, it's a smaller format overall and the pages are very sturdy and thick high-quality paper. However, despite its size, the sheer amount of information packed within it is truly enough to get anyone started or keep anyone interested. I like the size as it's easy to take with me and it fits well in the hand.

I own a lot of quilting books, some of them the size of a coffee-table book, and I have to say that this book is the one I constantly go back to, to look up information, get quick instructions on "how do I do this again?", find a project for a rainy day (or weekend, or week), or sometimes just to page through and wish I had an unlimited fabric budget.

If you get this book you will not be disappointed!

                      Book Description

Desire by Design is a celebration and analysis of the possibilities offered by emerging new technologies to cut across conventional disciplinary boundaries and to challenge received ideas about gender, identity, the body, subjectivism and space. The book brings together original writings and images from varied fields and practices which together develop a wide perspective on three key areas: designing bodies, territories of information, and spatial perceptions. Contributions by critics, designers and theorists are presented alongside images by artists working in the UK, North America and Europe.

5 out of 5 stars Anthology of Cyberfeminist Art and Theory.......2000-05-29

Sixteen essays bring together digital media artists, software and graphic designers, feminist theorists and historians of space, architecture and science, with cyberfeminists (see especially essay by "Technowhores"), to consider multiple issues concerned with "women and design." Contributors critically and creatively celebrate and interrogate cybertechnologies, and consider how these (material, conceptual and virtual) processes and practices challenge (and reify) contemporary ideas of gender, the body, nature, identity, space, diaspora, and difference.

                      Book Description

Although the traditional Sioux nation was in its last days when Luther Standing Bear was born in the 1860s, he was raised in the ancestral manner to be a successful hunter and warrior and a respectful and productive member of Sioux society. Known as Plenty Kill, young Standing Bear belonged to the Western Sioux tribe that inhabited present-day North and South Dakota. In My Indian Boyhood he describes the home life and education of Indian children. Like other boys, he played with toy bows and arrows in the tipi before learning to make and use them and became schooled in the ways of animals and in the properties of plants and herbs. His life would be very different from that of his ancestors, but he was not denied the excitement of killing his first buffalo before leaving to attend the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A valuable insight into Lakota lifeways........2004-04-11

Being written for young people, Standing Bear's account of his Lakota childhood is necessarily sanitized and romanticized. Its focus is on the domestic life of his people. Mention is often made of the courage of the warriors but there is no description of any military action. An incident is related of an enemy warrior stumbling into the village. We are told that he was well treated and quickly released. It is hard to believe that that was typical treatment of an enemy. Similarly, the more adult themes of courtship and sexuality are largely ignored. What we are left with is a treasure trove of homely detail: how cooking was accomplished in the absence of metal pots, how the boys caught turtles in the creek, what games they played. This is the very warp and weft of everyday life that gets left out of the broad-sweep histories that concentrate on great battles and famous lives.

Standing Bear may not always be totally reliable, any more than any other commentator - for example, his account of leather tanning, which was strictly women's work, did not quite ring true for me. (Not that I have ever tanned a buffalo hide - I just doubt it can be done in quite the way he describes). All the same this remains an essential work, packed full as it is of fascinating detail, for anyone interested in understanding the lifestyle of the Sioux, and is a perfect gift for a youngster who expresses an interest in American Indians.
