Book Description

Now that Priscilla Halburton-Smythe has agreed to marry him, Police Sergeant Hamish Macbeth can't imagine a more perfect life. There's not much crime in his remote Scottish village of Lochdubh, nothing much at all to do but fish, drink coffee, and slouch around. And now to spend time with lovely Priscilla. But his days aren't as tranquil as his dreams. For one thing, Priscilla's renovation schemes are driving him out of his cottage. Not to mention her ambitious plans for his career as a policeman away from Lochdubh. This might be a good time to find out why Peter Hynd's arrival in nearby Drim was causing so much trouble. An attractive, unmarried man with an independent income would always attract attention in such a small place. But this time Hynd's arrival seems to have caused bitter rivalry among the women of Drim. Hamish finds their petty fights amusing and a clever excuse to avoid Priscilla and her schemes for a new electric stove (to replace his beloved woodburning appliance), a posh new bathroom, and virtuous nutrition. Amusing, that is, until death threats, physical abuse, and murder make statistical history in one of Scotland's most picture postcard-perfect towns.

5 out of 5 stars Hamish Tests His Limits.......2007-03-04

Don't read this book yet if you haven't read any others in the series. At least go back to Death of a Glutton and follow that with Death of a Travelling Man before taking on Death of a Charming Man. But if you can go to the beginning, Death of a Gossip, that would be best.

At the end of Death of a Travelling Man a false rumor spreads that Hamish and Priscilla Halburton-Smythe are engaged. Faced with everyone believing so, Hamish and Priscilla agreed to a sort-of engagement . . . just to see how things go. Hamish is wildly happy, and Priscilla is pleasantly open to the experience.

At the start of Death of Charming Man, Priscilla's well-organized ways are driving Hamish a bit batty as a new electric cooker is installed to replace his old wood-burning stove at the police station. Matters are made worse by Superintendent Daviot's wife who is out searching for homes that Hamish and Priscilla can buy in Strathbane. Hamish wants to stay in Lochdubh and live in the police station with Priscilla (without the cooker).

Wanting relief from all this, Hamish heads on Drim (a dreary place on his beat) to meet the new English arrival, a gorgeous young man named Peter Hynd who knows how to turn on the charm. There's something about Hynd that bothers Hamish. Those concerns grow when Hynd begins flirting with all of the middle-aged women in Drim who turn a bit batty themselves over the attention. Hamish is less pleased when Hynd invites Priscilla for dinner and later makes trouble over wanting to buy her scarf.

Matters are made worse in the Hamish-Priscilla relationship when the receptionist at the Tommel Castle Hotel decides to thrust herself on Hamish and create a scandal. Finally, Hamish warms Priscilla up a bit when police business intrudes.

When Peter Hynd leaves Drim, the men cheer and the women weep before going back to the old ways. Hamish is suspicious that there's foul play involved but cannot prove anything. An apparently accidental death follows that makes Hamish even more suspicious. But he's alone in his concerns. Feeling abandoned, Hamish takes his vacation to sleuth on his own. Before the book ends, Hamish finds that he's met his match in more than one way in this entertaining mystery.

Hamish Macbeth fans will find this to be one of the top books in the series. The development of the Hamish-Priscilla relationships is very find. The portrayal of the Peter Hynd character is well done. The villagers in Drim become interesting as well. The mystery is a challenging one, and most people probably won't get it until M.C. Beaton drops two clues to get you on the right track. The ending is full of interesting humor in which M.C. Beaton makes fun of her typical Hamish Macbeth endings.

Savor this one. It's very fine.

4 out of 5 stars Doris Bodmer (Visa ending 34154).......2006-03-14

As with all MC Beaton's Hamish Macbeth stories, it is is the nature descriptions which are so particularly charming. You think you are in the Scottish Highlands with the constant change of weather and the few remarkably lovely days, the stern mountains and the Loch which can be silvery smooth or roaring with fierce waves. All this surrounds Hamish, the lovable and astute detective who wants to live nowhere else but in Lochdubh. I want to take my next vacation in the Highlands (hope I won't get murdered.) Keep writing Mrs. Beaton we love your books.

4 out of 5 stars A Crucial Book in this Series.......2003-12-11

This book is a crucial book in the series because of what happens in Hamish's personal and professional life as a result of his uncovering this mystery. Hamish is sleuthing on his own in the small neighbouring village of Drim. He's the only one that thinks that murder most foul has been committed there. He puts his professional life on the line to first of all prove that murder was done, and then to show who actually committed it. Hamish is his usual laconic, endearing self. No wonder that the books of Hamish Macbeth have started a cult of followers over here across the pond from where MC Beaton and her fictional characters live. As in other books there is a sense of despair but a true sense of warmth as well. Her books in this series in particular are prime examples of black comedy. And her characterizations are absolutely wonderful with each outing.

4 out of 5 stars Death of a Charming Man.......2003-08-03

"Death of a Charming Man" is the 10th Hamish Macbeth mystery by M.C. Beaton. Hamish is now engaged to the lovely Priscilla Halburton-Smythe. Priscilla is making changes to make Hamish more respectable, and it is cramping his style. Hamish travels to the small village of Drim which is in his territory to check out a very handsome and rich Englishman, Peter Hynd, who has moved there. The middle-aged women of Drim are all going to the hairdresser and taking aerobics classes in order to impress Mr. Hynd. He is even sleeping with some of the women, most of whom are married. Suddenly he disappears from Drim, and sells his house. Hamish senses that something is wrong and believes that Peter Hynd may be dead, and possibly murdered, perhaps by a jealous husband from the village. To get away from Lochdubh and Priscilla, he vacations in Drim to try to find out exactly what happened to Peter Hynd. This was not my favorite Hamish Macbeth novel, but it is an important one in the personal life of Hamish, and is a good read.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This is yet another try at telling the story of when Superman and Captain Marvel met, because pre-Crisis these guys lived on their own separate worlds in separate universes. An excuse to make a pretty team up and have some crazy evil scientist types as bad guys, in Luthor and Sivana, and to highlight Captain Marvel's strength vs magic, and Superman's experience in giving him a hand.

        5 out of 5 stars Surprised..........2007-07-05

I am surprised at the tepid ratings from some of the other reviewers. I really enjoyed this story and the art grew on me as well. The story was best when exploring the characters of Superman, Billy Batson and Sivana. In particular Sivana is well realized. He actually comes across as an old amoral narcissist, proud of his accomplishments and mildly irritated that he runs the 4th largest conglomerate in the world and Lex Luthor has the 3rd. He is seriously and realistically portrayed.

I also liked the way the nature of magic and "people of magic" are used to highlight the clearly immoral nature of using a 10 year old boy to further even the most laudable goal. Superman is appalled and confronts Shazam very directly. Unfortunately this will likely be underutilized as a story element, and Superman rather blithely accepts blandishments from the old sorcerer and moves on. I consider this the only real flaw in the story.

The action is utterly incidental. The threats, like most threats to Superman and to a lesser degree Captain Marvel are hardly worth mentioning. Combat is a story device to get the two together and let them compare...um...notes.

I would heartily recommend the book.

3 out of 5 stars When Legends Meet.......2006-10-20

Two of comicdom's most legendary characters are none other than Superman and Captain Marvel, more popularly known as Shazam.

To the unfamiliar, at first glance the two heroes seem almost indistinguishable from one another with Captain Marvel wearing the spiffier costume while Superman possesses the more iconic insignia.

Superman/Shazam: First Thunder chronicles a contemporary interpretation of the first meeting between the World's Mightiest Mortal and the Man of Steel.

And though not the best-drawn story featuring these characters that have both been around since the early days of comic books, this graphic novel provides a bit of insight into the differences between the two.

For example, from a dialogue between these foremost costumed adventurers, the reader learns that while Superman might have superior senses, Captain Marvel is more immune to the effects of magic.

It is doubtful Superman/Shazam will be remembered as a graphic novel classic. However, fans will nevertheless get a kick out of seeing these legends team up.

4 out of 5 stars Man of Steel, Meet the Earth's Mightiest Mortal.......2006-09-11

A simple but nicely told retcon of how Superman first met Captain Marvel, fighting big ugly monsters, cultists, giant robots, etc.

I may get flamed for this, but it's better than the Justice League Unlimited episode "The Clash", in which Superman uncharacteristically acted like a callous d***weed towards Cap for an honest mistake; the overall ep was basically just an excuse to have Superman and Captain Marvel duke out, which has been a popular feature in the comics.

"First Thunder" is not exactly a Hugo Award winner, but it's briskly paced and worth a look for seeing Supes befriend Marvel, watching them chit-chat back and forth about their powers, where they've been, what they can do, all that good stuff. There's some poignant moments thrown in with the humor and violence as well, with Superman making a passionate speech against the Wizard who gave little Billy Batson his powers in the first place about how a little kid shouldn't have to carry the weight of being a superhero, with the last few panels alluding that Superman will become a mentor to Captain Marvel.

All in all, a nice little diversion.

1 out of 5 stars The writer doesn't "get" Captain Marvel.......2006-06-28

This comic book is utter garbage, condescending to the reader, and an insult to all fans of Captain Marvel. In its laughable attempts at somehow making a superhero story "realistic" (a contradiction in terms--superhero stories are inherently immature and fantastic in nature), it destroys any chance there was of telling a good story about the meeting of two iconics superheroes from the Golden Age. Avoid at all costs.

Robert Charles Wilson's time has come. His first novel from Tor, Darwinia, was a finalist for science fiction's Hugo award, and a #1 Locus bestseller in paperback. His next novel, Bios, is a critical and commercial success. Now Wilson's brilliant short science fiction is available in book form for the first time.Beginning with "The Perseids," winner of Canada's national SF award, this collection showcases Wilson's suppleness and strength: bravura ideas, scientific rigor, and living, breathing human beings facing choices that matter. Also included among the several stories herein are the acclaimed Hugo Award finalist "Divided by Infinity" and three new stories written specifically for this collection. AUTHORBIO: ROBERT CHARLES WILSON lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Very strange.......2002-09-01

This book is more horror than science fiction. It's very strange, very dark, and very disturbing. I can't call any of the stories "optimistic." I can call them nightmares that have made their way into print. I have never read anything like this. The author is very imaginative. But I wonder, what kind of a mind can write stories like this?

          4 out of 5 stars Interesting anthology.......2001-06-24

This is a fascinating science fiction anthology that centers on a small bookstore, Finders, as if that place is the vortex of the universe. Each story is well written and connects back to the bookstore, some more so than others. Three tales are new though if readers are like this reviewer they were unaware that the author had written any short stories so all the tales are new. As with his novels, Robert Charles Wilson has written an exciting book that showcase why this writer is one of the centers of the genre as short science fiction is rarely as good.

5 out of 5 stars Archons and Demiurges Populating Northern Lights of Toronto.......2001-02-07

Robert Charles Wilson's fictions are always a great pleasure to read: populated by heartbroken, sometimes courageous, sometimes tragic characters caught in the galactic spinning wheels not of their design, depicted in elegant, spare and caustically witty prose, and addressing heavy metaphysical questions without losing sight of human-scale sufferings and losses. I sort of regard him as Graham Greene of contemporary science fiction, a healthy antidote to all the postmodern ironies and self-congratulatory razzle-dazzle that infect fictions of every genre these days. His first collection of short stories is, if anything, sparer and tougher than his epic novels like MYSTERIUM or DARWINA. Without employing unnecessary pyrotechnics (although he does kill off all life on earth in "Infinity Divided by Infinity") or dangling his attitude in front of our noses, Wilson draws us into the realm of horrors and wonders both cosmic (like Lovecraft minus the baroque intimations of "unspeakable") and personal. Potentially dreary subjects like alien abduction ("The Observer") and mineral-based life form ("Pearl Baby") are reworked into strange and unexpected touching meditations on the nature of mystery and the human ambivalence toward it. On the other hand, the collection's intimate scope might turn off fans of BIOS and DARWINIA, the stories being firmly rooted in the physical and emotional geography of Toronto. Some may also feel that science is not "hard" enough; others may object to the author's somewhat strenuous effort to construct a "shared world" around the stories that seem to have very little in common. I for one am quite satisfied, and am eagerly looking forward to his second collection.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best I've read.......2000-10-11

I'm a BIG fan of Robert Charles Wilson books, and ordered this collection of short stories with great anticipation. After finishing the book, however, I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed. A couple of the stories are what I'd call good, the rest left me hoping that the next story would be better. RCW's stand alone novels are excellent and I'd recommend them to anyone, but I can't say that I'd recommend this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant short (long!) stories.......2000-08-17

Robert Charles Wilson has long been one of my favourite authors both in long fiction and short. As a Canadian, I've been able to see his wonderful short fiction as it appeared in various Canadian venues, such as the _Northern Frights_ and the _Tesseracts_ series of anthologies. Now they are collected here and they are fabulous. Wilson writes with heart and soul and a staggering intellect that is never show-offy. His fiction is a joy to read. My favorite of the stories is the title one, "The Perseids," which quite rightly won Canada's top sci-fi prize, the Aurora. For readers who know Wilson's work, his short fiction is much more in the vein of his Hugo nominated _Darwinia_ rather than in that of the more recent _Bios_. I recommend this book highly and hope it is only the first of many collections from RCW.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Dinner Experience.......2006-12-29

I am an experienced cook and was eager to try a recipie from this book that I received as a Christmans gift. I prepared the "Savory Garlic Chicken Stew" exactly as directed on page 92.

What a terrible and tasteless dish. It was more of a soup than a stew, there was no taste of garlic, and even the chicken was bad. It made its way to the disposal!

I hope other recipes in the book are better...but I will probably use the book to start my New Year's eve fire. At least it would be good for something.

4 out of 5 stars Good beginner slow cooker recipes.......2006-11-02

This is a good all-purpose cookbook to get you started enjoying your slow cooker. To address some of the criticisms:

Yes, some of the recipies are mild. But I think that's a strength because it allows me to adjust the spices and seasonings to fit my family's preferences and easily make a dish my own.

No, slow cooking does not have to be over-cooked mush. Like any appliance, there is some trial and error in learning what temperatures and cooking times maximize your cooker's performance. I plug my slow cooker into an electrical outlet timer (since mine hasn't digital controls) to assure that it doesn't cook too long. This also allows me to start cooking mid-day when I'm away at work. It should go without saying that this kind of delayed cooking is not appropriate for eggs or raw meat due to food safety concerns.

Baking recipes are best suited for very large, cafeteria-style slow cookers. Slow cookers do an excellent job baking, but I wouldn't adise it beyond a fun experiment or if your oven was out of commission.

Give it a try - I've enjoyed this cookbook and found it a good foundational resource for slow cooking.

4 out of 5 stars Not a "Dummy" or an "Idiot" -- I Just Needed a New Cookbook.......2006-10-29

I researched the available newer slow cooker cookbooks for a week or two before going to a "brick & mortar" chain bookstore this weekend to buy one. I've used a Crock-Pot for over 20 years, but just recently upgraded to a larger oval slow cooker, and needed a more recent cookbook with recipes which could be made in a larger slow cooker without adjusting ingredient quantities. I browsed through all of the slow cooker cookbooks at the bookstore, and ended up buying this one. Why?
            1) Price -- This is one of the least expensive of the full-size-with-lots-of-recipes slow cooker cookbooks.
            2) Recipe Format -- Very clear & easy to read layout, with important information like slow cooker size and attention required in boldface type on the same corner of every page.
            3) Recipe Variety -- 300 recipes (usually 1 per page), and in many categories which I hadn't thought of in connection with crockpot cooking before. (I think I will still bake bread in my bread machine and cookies in my oven, though.)
Have not actually cooked anything from this yet, which is why it hasn't earned a fifth star from me (so far). "Bland/church supper"-type recipes (as mentioned in some of the other reviews) aren't a turnoff for me, as I don't mind going beyond the recipe to adjust seasonings, and I do actually bring hot dishes to church potlucks occasionally. Looking forward to trying some of these recipes out.

            4 out of 5 stars Finally--good slow cooker food.......2004-10-18

I love the concept of a slow cooker. I love the idea of being able to dump some ingredients in, leave it all day, and come back to a tender, delicious meal. But somehow it almost never seems to work out that way.

We've tried all sorts of slow cooker recipes over the years; almost every one comes out tasting very bland. Or the flavors get jammed together and you lose the subtlety and richness you'd get out of a "normal" recipe. Or the recipe author solved the lack of flavor by finding a strong ingredient or two and pouring them on, producing a dish with a very unbalanced taste. Finally we stumbled across "The Everything Slow Cooker Cookbook," and we found recipes we actually liked.

The book provides an unusual variety of recipes, for a slow cooker cookbook at least. There isn't as much as a regular cookbook, but then most slow cooker recipes out there are variations on stew or pot roast, so I'll take what I can get. There's a serious limit on what you can do with this kind of cooking appliance so you can't really expect the variety of a generic cookbook.

The author provides information on how slow cookers affect the flavors of things like spices and aromatic vegetables (this makes it much easier to adjust recipes to your taste). She also gives information on converting regular recipes to the slow cooker. These pieces of information alone make this book valuable.

She also has a good sense of flavor, in my opinion. I've always thought I *should* like baked beans, based on the ingredients, but I couldn't find a version that appealed to me. I've made the two versions from this cookbook and they were both delightful! We've made other things as well, including soups and a rice pudding, and all of them came out quite well. My only issue with them is that some of them didn't store well at all, which can be a pain when you're making an entire crock-pot's worth of food. Also, the author sometimes drastically underestimates the number of servings, I think (but better that than over-estimating...).

For the life of me I can't figure out why the author converted things like cookie recipes to the slow cooker, but oh well. These recipes don't take up that much space. Other than the storage issues we've really enjoyed this cookbook. The flavors are very good, the recipes are straightforward, the information is comprehensive, and the variety and number of recipes is extensive. If you want the convenience of a slow cooker but don't like typical slow cooker recipes, this is a very good cookbook to try.

            1 out of 5 stars Horrid recipes!!.......2004-02-21

I'm a great cook, but I got a slow cooker thinking it'll help me on days when I don't have time to fuss with too much cooking, and so I got this book as well (without reading the other reviews).
I've tried one of the recipes; it's horrid, plain tasting and not at all appetizing looking either. I'm afraid to try the other recipes from this book and wasting the ingredients. I actually get better tasting & free recipes online for my slow cooker now.

2 out of 5 stars Good for Those Thinking of Purchasing a Cav.......2003-04-21

I found a lot of interesting information in this book, but it seemed to be more about dogs in general than the specific breed. In fact, the second half of the book has pictures of other breeds. Overall, I think this book is a nice introduction to the breed but not very informative for those who already are well acquainted with the breed.

            5 out of 5 stars I'M SMARTER NOW............2001-11-02

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. I DO KNOW A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THIS BREED AND FOUND IT ONE I COULD RECOMMEND TO NEW PUPPY OWNERS AS REQUIRED READING. THE AUTHOR WAS INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING. THE DOGS ILLUSTRATED WERE LOVELY. I AM IN LOVE WITH THE DOG ON THE COVER.....HE IS A REAL "KEEPER."
I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE DISCUSSION ON A RAW DIET AND MANY OTHER TOPICS NOT USUALLY COVERED IN AN INTRODUCTORY BOOK.

2 out of 5 stars Switched Dogs in the Middle.......2000-05-29

The first half of the book is devoted to material about CKCS, the remainder on training, habits shows other dogs. It is a little disconcerting when you buy a book about a specific dog, and end up reading about the training of other canines.

            5 out of 5 stars A Reader/Cavalier Owner from San Diego, California.......2000-05-28

This wonderfully written book, contains all the information on could possibly want on this marvelous little dog. Since, all breed differ somewhat, it's very helpful to have details on the behavior, health as well as details of all facets of this dog. This book will be a reference for years to come.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-05-13

I am a new machine knitter and was amazed at the possibilities. Machine knitting has apparently taken a downturn with many manufacturers discontinuing products as needle knitting is gaining recent popularity. If only people saw this book first, they would never want to try to use needles! I can't wait to try many of the techniques illustrated in this book!

              5 out of 5 stars Knitter's Bonanza!.......2000-09-27

I obtained this book after I had been machine-knitting for about 2-3 years, and have found it an inexhaustible treasure-trove of techniques, tips and patterns. I refer to it over and over. It's worth 10x its price. Whether you are a brand-new machine-knitter, or a seasoned one, this book will never collect dust on your shelf----you might even find yourself needing to buy a new one!

              2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-02-04

I was very disappointed in this book. I have been machine knitting for about 18 years and most of the stitches included in this book I learnt to do quite early on. This is probably a book better suited to a beginner who may not have any other source for learning these stitches. I also found the majority of the stitches outdated. They were big in the 1980's when everything was big, bulky and oversized. Only some of the stitches would suit todays fashions. I wouldn't reccomend it but others might like the stitches in this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best MK book in my library.......2000-01-31

This book is absolutely great! It explaines different techniques with easy to follow instructions accompanied by photographs. This book is "hands on" and has helped me many a times to conquer some of the techniques that I would have otherwise never had the courage to use. Even on techniques I already (thought I) knew it gave me useful hints and tips and an insight into how to do it easier and better. Do you know the feeling when "the penny drops"? This is what is was like following the instructions of this book. It is the most used MK book in my library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Machine Knitting Handbook.......1999-05-13

As a new Machine Knitter I have been in search of books which will help me to learn this hobby/craft. I borrowed this book first from the library and renewed it 2 times because I find it to be the best to be found. I need to return the library book soon and I don't want to be without it for a day so I am ordering it hopefully in time. I would recommend it to anyone who machine knits. By the way, there is a companion video which is also excellent. That will be my next purchase.

                  4 out of 5 stars Super Suite.......2006-02-14

This is a really fun book, loads and loads of adorable ideas for preadolescent and postadolescent girls (of all ages!). It was fun to read, look at, and it was also fun to do the projects. Go Mark!!

5 out of 5 stars Super Suite is Super Sweet.......2005-09-10

I actually disagree with some of the reviews. I don't want to buy a book and copy everything project for project in the book. I like taking different ideas from different rooms and making it my own. This book showed me tons of projects to make and ways to make my room look amazing. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone interested in teen decor.

                  2 out of 5 stars Vague..............2005-04-25

This book is very vague. I liked some points of it but it barely gives any explanation at all. Sure, it shows you how to do most of the things in there, but it doesn't tell you how to convert those ideas into larger rooms. I, personally, have a larger room than most of the rooms in this book. I don't know how this got published, but I guess it did. Also, it doesn't even have any help at picking what's right for you. I've heard of some books having quizzes in the front but this book has nothing. Zero. It does have one good point though- it shows how to actually make the things they show you. That's the only good thing though. Ugh.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas!.......2004-10-25

I was a little hesitant when buying this book, since it seemed like there were a lot of ultra-girly things (there IS a ton of pink!) But I was really pleased when I started flipping through the pages. Even though there are ideas that aren't my style, with a little creativity anyone can adapt Mark's outlook to fit their own taste. For example: I was inspired by his "Desert Caravan" room, however, I couldn't live with orange. I took the basic design of the wall treatmant and applied it to my bedroom, substituting 3 beautiful shades of turquoise for the orange. It looks so much better now, and I can't believe I actually pulled it off!

Other people might take one look at the book and return it to its shelf - they may think the rooms are too extravagant or over-the-top for their taste. But just because Mark gave these girls' rooms complete makeovers doesn't mean you have to invest tons of money and effort recreating the entire room! Picking out a couple accents and/or concepts can breathe new life into an old space. And there ARE many cheap and simple ways to do that.

So if you're like me, you might have to work at convincing your mom or dad to let you brighten up your bedroom, but it'll be well worth it. A lot of ideas are all about refurnishing - reusing old pieces to create a brand-new look. Even if you're not creative, this book can give you tons of ideas on where to start.

The reason why I gave Super Suite 4 stars instead of 5 is because it won't cater to everyone's tastes, but that is a very difficult thing to do. But whether your style is wild, girly, funky, romantic, elegant, or modern..... you'll like at least one thing in this book!

5 out of 5 stars Wow wow wow!.......2004-07-18

Just got Super Suite for my birthday and I love it. There are so many ideas in this book, it was hard to decide where to start. I noticed some of the other reviews and they are wrong. This is the only good book out there for teen decor. Most books I have seen are boring BORING. This one was really fun and colorful and inspirational. I would tell any teenager to get this book for sure.

                    Book Description

Color is a wonderful tool that transforms everything it touches, affecting us in ways that we do not fully appreciate. The bedroom is often the last room to be decorated, and yet it is the one room where people can really express themselves. In the six makeover styles presented, color is not only enjoyed in paint but also in other elements such as fabric and wallpaper.

                          Book Description

How did the United States become not only the leading contemporary art scene in the world, but also the leading market for art? The answer has to do not only with the talents of American artists or even the size of the American economy, but also--and especially--the skills and entrepreneurship of American art dealers. Their story has not been told...until now. Landscape with Figures is the first history of art dealing in the United States, following the profession from eighteenth-century portrait and picture salesmen in the colonies to the high-profile, jet-set gallery owners of today. Providing anecdotal and carefully researched biographies of the prominent dealers from more than two centuries of trade, author Malcolm Goldstein shows how magnanimous personalities and social networking helped to shape the way Americans have bought and valued art. These dealers range from Michael Paff, whose enthusiasm often overshadowed his expertise but nonetheless helped him sell faux Old Master paintngs to major collectors in the early nineteenth century; to the imperious Joseph Duveen, dealer to magnates like Henry Clay Frick; to visionary Leo Castelli, who helped to usher in a revolution in modern art during the 1960s by showing such avant-garde artists as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol. Goldstein also shows that the American art trade, while male-dominated, has been galvanized by female dealers, including the inimitable Edith Gregor Halpert, Peggy Guggenheim, and Mary Boone. Their fascinating stories unfold in the context of world art history, the rise of major art institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, and the growing zeal of art collectors who would eventually pay millions for individual works of art. Unprecedented and critical to understanding today's art world, Landscape with Figures is a must for artists, art history students, and art lovers.
