By any standard, Inspector Chen Cao is a novelty in the world of police procedurals. A published poet and translator of American and English mystery novels, he has been assigned by the Chinese government, under Deng Xiaoping's cadre policy, to a "productive" job with the Special Cases Bureau of the Shanghai Police Department.
Shanghai in the mid-1990s is a city caught between reverence for the past and fascination with a tantalizing, market-driven present. When the body of a young "national model worker," revered for her adherence to the principles of the Communist Party, turns up in a canal, Chen is thrown into the midst of these opposing forces. As he struggles to unravel the hidden threads of this paragon's life, he finds himself challenging the very political forces that have guided his life since birth. With party-line-spouting superiors above him and detectives who resent his quick promotion beneath him, Chen finds himself wondering whether justice is a concept at all meaningful in late-20th-century China.
Death of a Red Heroine is a book hovering uneasily between the spheres of fiction and fact, creativity and didacticism. For much of the novel, author Qiu Xiaolong seems more intent on driving home the actions and consequences of the Cultural Revolution and its aftermath than on the slowly unfolding plot. Tedious repetitions of the fates, under Mao, of "educated youths" joust with both the actions of the detectives and Chen's "poetic" ruminations, which, unfortunately, are infected by precisely the stiffness and arbitrariness Qiu is at pains to decry in his historical passages. The moving couplets Chen favors are potentially fascinating insights into the interaction between ancient and modern China, but instead of provoking the reader into reflection, Qiu offers reductive explanations of each and every poem.
The moments when Qiu concentrates on invoking atmosphere are both illuminating and rewarding: Detective Yu's wife's pride and pleasure in having brought home a dozen crabs at "state price" are movingly well crafted, all the more so because Qiu seems almost unaware of what he is doing. Rather than lecturing on the economic dilemmas of the modern worker, he lets Peiqin's simple happiness speak for itself. In the last quarter of the book, Qiu seems to find his stride, though his writing style remains undeniably awkward. Here Chen expands and relaxes, and with him, the novel. Qiu's debut, though anything but polished, holds the promise of better things to come. --Kelly Flynn

More than Just a Compelling Mystery Novel.......2007-09-06
"Mainland China," "compelling detective story," and "Chinese mystery writer" are not word combiations that one would expect to see often together in print, but Qiu Xiaolong's compelling DEATH OF A RED HEROINE justifies their joint appearance at least this once. Born in Shanghai but living in the U.S. since 1989, Mr. Qiu (pronounced "cho," rhymes with Joe) is now a professor of Chinese literature at Washington University in St. Louis. While he pens his stories in English, his heart is clearly in Shanghai, so much so that this most Western of mainland Chinese cities virtually becomes a character in his book.
Qiu's story revolves around a young woman's body found stuffed into a black plastic bag in a small canal about 20 miles outside of Shanghai. The discovery is phoned into the Shanghai Police Bureau, where the call is taken by Detective Yu Guangming of the Homicide Divisions special (as in politically sensitive) case squad. Detective Yu's superior, the up-and-coming Inspector Chen Cao (as much a poet and Tang Dynasty poetry enthusiast as he is a detective) ultimately decides that he and Yu will pursue the case in its early stages until they see how it develops. As it turns out, theirs is the perfect place for the case to be assigned - the body is discovered to be that of Guan Hongying, a sales clerk at the Shanghai Number One Department store and nationally known as one of the Communist Party's select group of "model workers."
By far the bulk of the story concerns Chen's and Yu's efforts to peer into Guan Hongying's intensely private life and find a reason for her murder. The arc of the novel follows predictable mystery novel lines - discovery, autopsy, identification, more discovery, witnesses, suspects, more discovery, motives, applied leverage, proof, and resolution. Yet while traversing this path, author Qiu sheds fascinating light on numerous aspects of modern life in mainland China. His story opens a door onto the workings of the Communist Party and its founding cadres (and their children). As well, he ushers readers into the whirlwinds of societal and even physical change swarming through Shanghai, contrasting the disappearing lifestyles and personalities of old Shanghai with that of the new city exhibited in Pudong and along the teeming shopping districts of Nanjing and Huihai Roads. To his even greater credit, Qiu takes us into his detectives' homes and daily lives, particularly that of Yu Guangming and his family.
Much like Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko (GORKY PARK, WOLVES EAT DOGS, STALIN'S GHOST), Qiu's Inspector Chen is intelligent and intuitive without being flashy. Outwardly, both Renko and Chen appear to their compatriots as dogged loners, unbending and resolute in their determination to solve the case and bring "the truth" to light, whatever the personal and political cost to themselves and their careers. Both authors have created charming, Columbo-like heroes whose foibles, talents, and persistence make them remarkably sympathetic to the reader.
DEATH OF A RED HEROINE is a thoroughly entertaining story that secondarily serves as an outstanding window into the life and culture of mainland China. Having lived in Suzhou, China off and on for several years and visited nearby Shanghai many times, I can attest that Mr. Qiu's characterizations of Chinese life and the sense of atmosphere he creates in his writing are spot on. This book is enjoyable both as a mystery novel and as an armchair tourist's look into mainland Chinese life.
China.......2007-08-23
This is an outstanding book which weaves the commercialization of the PRCand a murder mystery Ch into the continuing dominance of the People's party leadership.
A New Star.......2007-08-02
Qiu Xiaolong is one of the most exciting writers working today. He takes an immensely fertile environment -- the corruption, cronyism, and rapid change of present-day China and puts into it an ethical cop who is also a poet and a translator of American mystery novels. Chen is one of the great new characters in detective fiction: complex, conflicted, stubborn, absolutely committed to doing his job the best he can, despite the immense pressures on him to keep the blame away from the rich and influential, where it most often belongs. All the books are brilliantly plotted, fast-paced, packed with vivid characters, and full of fascinating ethical dilemmas. You can't go wrong with any of them. As someone who writes about Asia himself, I recommend every single one of the Inspector Chen novels. They'll take you into a different world, and in the company of a remarkable character.
A good read.......2007-05-02
Having just read this book (May, 2007) I'm a bit late to the party. I bought a copy speculating that it might be a good series (or at least not the typical mystery that I usually read) and I was very, very pleased.
Set in the critical early years of the transition of China from communit to free market, this is as much a review of Chinese society of the time as it is a detective novel. The characters are likable, the plot sound, and the setting leaves you wondering how anything could get done in a fluid political and social setting as Shanghai resides. But rest assured Inspector Chen delivers, finds the bad guy, and can still look at himself in the mirror when it is all done.
All accomplished pretty much without hidden codes, high speed chases, blazing gunfights, or some sex kitten extravaganza.
It satisfied me enough to buy "A Loyal Character Dancer" (second in the series) and I'm enjoying it as well.
So if you need a change of pace from your cozy or hard-boiled mystery reading, Qiu Xiaolong takes you to a totally foreign setting (for an American) for a very satisfactory tale of crime.
Interesting.......2007-03-16
It's a bit overwritten but it's much more than a simple who-done-it. It captures the strange limbo that China was in between the control of the old guard of Chairman Mao and the freer time begun by Deng Xiaopeng. The characterizations are strong. And Shanghai is described with visceral accuracy. I'm looking forward to reading another Chief Inspector Chen mystery.

"When something terrifically terrible happens to you, I think your brain doesn't get it, for quite a while. You go on trying to see the world the way it was, even when common sense should tell you that everything has changed forever."
Semirah Garson is certain that nothing could ever be more horrific than what she has just lived through: a plane crash in the middle of the ocean followed by the shocking discovery that she and the other survivors are stranded on an apparently deserted island with no Target or Taco Bell in sight. But she's wrong. Because no matter how hard it is for Semi, Arnie, and Miranda to bear the sun, snakes, and fading hope of rescue, it's nothing compared to what Dr. Franklin has in store for them. It's his private island they've had the misfortune to land on. And it's his private hell they'll have to endure. Dr. Franklin is too old to test his theories of animal gene therapy on himself. He needs resilient teenage bodies that have already proven they can handle great trauma. Semi's always wondered what it might be like to breathe underwater. She just never imagined she'd know firsthand....
Veteran science fiction author Ann Halam has taken the framework of H.G. Wells's classic evolution parable The Island of Dr. Moreau and crafted an exquisitely wrought 21st-century update that plays on all our modern fears of test-tube clones and misguided medical ethics. Haunting, bold, and heartily recommended. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
Semi, Miranda, and Arnie are part of a group of 50 British Young Conservationists on their way to a wildlife conservation station deep in the rain forests of Ecuador. After a terrifying mid-air disaster and subsequent crash, these three are the sole survivors, stranded together on a deserted tropical island. Or so they think. Semi, Miranda, and Arnie stumble into the hands of Dr. Franklin, a mad scientist who’s been waiting for them, eager to use them as specimens for his experiments in genetic engineering.

Customer Reviews:
Very Intense.......2007-09-16
This book was an extremely intense story, and in the end, I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. While the plot is admittedly very much like The Island of Dr. Moreau, this version is pretty muc a modern version of the classic novel, and, in my opinion, has more intensity than its older counterpart. Tweens and Teens can relate more to the characters, while not in the way that they are stranded on an island, but simply in the way that they talk and behave. If your sons or daughters enjoy such books as these, ones that are frightening, suspenseful and intense, then they should enjoy this one. I know I did.
Dr. Franklin's Island.......2007-05-18
Fifty teenage conservationists have been enrolled in a camp in Ecuador for scientific studies. Shy and awkward Semi struggles to mingle with her fellow campers, but when their flight from Britain crashes into the ocean, Semi must befriend two others, Miranda and Arnie, in order to escape the stormy waters and swim towards the coastline ahead. Once the three reached the island they gathered themselves and confirmed that the plane had exploded as they were swimming away, still with the hope that they were not the only survivors. Much to their disappointment their fellow campers and counselors were killed the night of the crash and for weeks the three castaways must fend for themselves on a tropical island without any way to contact the outside world. Soon Semi, Miranda and Arnie are captured by a party of mad scientists determined to turn all three into numerous animals. Together, though in the worst circumstances, Semi, Miranda and Arnie find a way to hold eachother close through the transformations, the terror of unknown needles and medications, many close escapes and their final heroic one. Dr. Franklin's Island, by Ann Halam, is an inventive science fiction novel that keeps you reading until the end. Its action and suspense begs you to read on and keeps your attention through the entire journey.
Dr. Franklin's Island is written in Semi's point of view. It is written as a sort of diary. I enjoy reading this sort of writing style where you can only know one person's thoughts and feelings, for it leaves you guessing. You can also see the difference in personality of Semi change and develop by the end of the story.
In this particular adventure, the three main characters try to escape the science research center numerous times, but do not manage to leave the island until the very end. They attempt twice though do not make it far enough. This element of suspense adds to the book's mystery and intrigues the reader.
The three characters Semi, Miranda and Arnie have an untrusting relationship in the beginning of their adventure on the island. But as the story moves on, their relationship and dependence on one another blossoms. The author brilliantly develops the characters throughout their adventure and each friendship is strengthened. Arnie, in the end, earns the trust of his fellow companions and together they flee the island as trusting friends.
Written by Ann Halam, Dr. Franklin's Island illustrates a heroic survival story of three castaways on a threatening island where their darkest nightmares come true. This science fiction read, for any science fiction readers out there, is probably best appreciated with middle schoolers and up.

"Nothing could save us: but we didn't have to die screaming.".......2007-05-18
The plane crashes, then it explodes, killing forty-seven out of the fifty British Young Conservationists passengers, as well as everyone else. The three sole survivors, Young Conservatives themselves, are near-sighted Semi, brave Miranda, and obnoxious Arnie, make their way to a seemingly deserted island. There they just try to survive until a search plane finds them, build a shelter, scavenge supplies from the crashed plane, look for food. Arnie disappears with his makeshift raft after eleven days. Miranda and Semi just assume that he has left them for the ocean. After forty or so days, they discover a hidden city of sorts hidden deep in the island. There they met Dr. Franklin and his assistant Dr. Skinner, two mad scientist who insist that they are to be their next guinea pigs in their genetic experiment. After their escape attempt is foiled, they are put in straightjackets and have no say in their future. Miranda and Semi get turned into animals, Miranda becomes a bird bigger than a golden eagle and Semi a large manta ray. They have each have a microchip in their brains that allows them to contact each other, but they slowly begin to lose themselves. Dr. Skinner finally snaps at the thought of the psychological games that Dr. Franklin plans to do to the poor girls minds. He sneaks Semi some antidote, but Miranda's will have to be injected threw a syringe and Skinner doesn't have the time to do that without being caught. Finally, Semi changes back into her normal self and rescues Miranda and Arnie, who had never ran off but actually had been captured, and their antidotes. With the help of Dr. Skinner they make their way back to true civilization and their families. This book was very descriptive and had believable characters, but it also had lots of boring, slow parts to it. I would recommend it to any teen who enjoys sci-fi novels but isn't looking for something fast-paced.
Semi, the narrator, is constantly talking about how she feels about certain things. It leads to a really descriptive novel. She talks about the dead bodies that she sees around the plane crash; the movie host chaperone who is missing a leg, the corpse of a girl, that at first sight seems that she is waving her arm, she has no hand, only a bloody stump. But really, it is just the waves moving her arm. When the effects of the operation begin to show up, first in Miranda then much later in Semi, is another very descriptive part of this book. Semi skillfully told all the details of this section, and it wasn't the slightest macabre. Miranda's chest bone grows and protrudes threw her skin, and all of her teeth fall out. Semi's first sign of the transformation is three bruises on her neck that later become her gills. Each of Semi's observations and thoughts about it stay true to her personality.
Each of the characters in this book have one or two characteristics that stand out above the rest. For Semi, it is that she is very shy. Waiting to board the plane, she doesn't talk to anyone. She sits and hides in a corner with a book. Miranda is very outgoing and brave. She sits next to Semi in the plane, and when it crashes, it is Miranda who tells Semi and Arnie to swim away from the plane. It's Miranda who keeps everybody's spirits from falling, their never really happy, but Miranda keeps them from wallowing in despair. Semi constantly says things about how Miranda has saved her life again, and how she is completely trusting Miranda and putting her life in her hands. But these realistic characters doesn't keep the book from having chapters where nothing at all happens.
These boring parts usually happened after a very exciting part in the book. After the plane explosion the story is just that they scavenged for food and built a tent. That seemingly small section took forever to cover. After the operation, it gets really boring. The girls are locked into a windowless suit and have fashion shows for each other. The longest boring part is after they are changed into the animals. All Semi does is lay around in her pool, enjoying the sun. This makes an otherwise exciting book almost dull.
Dr. Franklin's Island by Ann Halam is the story of two girls trapped on a island that have genetic experiments preformed on them. It is very detailed and has realistic characters galore. You get a crystal clear image the predicament of these girls, which anyone can relate to. However, it is sorta slow-paced at times. Dr. Franklin's Island is a book I would recommend to any teen sci-fi lover who doesn't mind a book that is slow-paced at times.

From a Kid's Point of View.......2007-04-06
I highly recommend this book. After the first couple of pages, I got totally sucked into the plot. The plane crash, the interesting animals,--all of that made me feel like I was actually part of the book. Ann Halam describes all of Semirah's problems and feelings so well that I was able to totally relate to what Semirach was going through. Although the plot drags on a little in the middle of the book, the rest of the book is awesome. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down!
Dr. Franklins Island.......2006-10-27
This book was good, but its not my favorite book ever. It was surprising at some points in the story but sometimes boring. In the beginning of the book it got interesting because you wanted to know more about the plane crash that Semi, Arnie and Miranda got into. They were the only 3 that survived. I would recommend this book to basically anyone, but I don't know how they'd feel about it. Some people may have other opinions than me but thats what I thought of this book.

great book, not what I was expecting.......2006-07-11
So far, all the recipes I have tried have been fabulous, Ms. Longbotham has put together another winner for me! I do also have her Luscious Lemon Desserts book, which is great, but I found some recipes from that book to be duplicated in this one. I was also expecting a bit more. This book is filled with great sounding recipes, but few within each category (such as vegetables, meats, desserts, etc.) so I was left wanting more. I guess that just shows how tempting all the recipes sound! I would have given this five stars but for the duplicates I came across and would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a love of lemon. We also loved the Lemon Fettuccine and have been fans of the Lemon Curd since we bought the dessert book!

Crazy for Lemon.......2002-08-15
I simply love this book. It is clear that the author spent a lot of time researching and getting lots of good information for us home cooks. I never dreamed there were so many ways to use this inexpensive citrus fruit. Lori's recipes using the zest, peel, fruit, juice have opened my eyes to the many flavorful possibilities that abound. I will never waste any part of lemons again! It was so smart to include ways to add lemon to favorite recipes I already use. I also found her recipes creative and easy to follow. Best of all, they work. So far, my favorite Lemon Zest recipes are delectable Creamy Lemon Fettuccine (few ingredients and delicious), Steamed Sea Bass with Ginger, Lemon, and Scallions (not fattening but flavorful), and scrumptious Lemon Pound Cake ( lemony and moist.)

Customer Reviews:
VERY SMALL PRINT.......2003-02-07
My newest passion is machine embroidery and so on the recommendation of Bella Online I purchased the book. By the beautiful samples it appears to be filled with great information, if I could only read it with ease. The print is unusally small and the small project descriptions are practically unreadable, so it has been a slow read with the use of a magnifying glass. The margins are wide so wonder why the printer chose such a tiny print. Lest you think it is my eyes, I have a huge library of quilting and sewing books and have never encountered this
problem before. The three stars are because of the print size. What a shame because I'm really intrigued by the photos.
Practical, Simple and Fun!.......2000-10-19
I read and review a lot of things as the Embroidery host for BellaOnline and this is one of the best books on Machine Embroidery I have come accross.
I found it easy to follow, with projects matched to the lessons and experience required in the lesson.
This book is a great book to have whether you are a beginner machine embroiderer or an advanced one.
Learn to use your sewing machine creatively - this book teaches you that you do not have to have a specialised "embroidery machine" to do beautiful machine embroidery.
Creative Machine Embroidery by Gail Harker.......2000-08-02
There have been many books written on machine embroidery but this one tops them all. Gail has gone into much needed detail to show How To Do and her style is easy to follow. I have taken classes from Gail and she is an excellent teacher. This book follows along the same lines. Inovative techniques make the end results worth it. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
This second volume, out of three, contains the chapters 216 up to 320 of the alltogether 372 chapters. Based on the Dār al-yaqaza al-`arabiyya (1966-1967) and on the manuscript of the Library of Alger, this translation has taken into account the work accomplished by Michel Chodkiewicz (Éditions du Seuil, 1982) and by A. Khurshīd (Alif Ëditions, 1996). It deals with mystic comments on Qur'anic verses and prophetic translations inspired by Ibn `Arabi's work. This volume also contains long comments on the Futuḥāt. Chapter 248 deals with the synthesis of Shaykh al-Akbar's view on the world, which helps to get an idea of this rather well organised vision, which is however often hard to understand.

Book Description
This first of three volumes comprising `Abd al Qâdir's work contains 215 of the 372 original chapters. Based on the Dār al-yaqaza al-`arabiyya (1966-1967) and on the manuscript of the Library of Alger, this translation addresses the work done so far by Michel Chodkiewicz and by A. Khurshīd. It deals with mystic comments on Qur'anic verses and prophetic translations inspired by Ibn `Arabi's work. It serves as a useful introduction to Futuḥāt and Fusus.

Book Description
What is it like to be a black person in America today? The voices of middle class African Americans captured in this book will surprise those who think the era of racial discrimination is past. The Many Costs of Racism is a vivid account of the mental, physical health, and economic effects of everyday racism for Black Americans--and of racism's high costs for all Americans. The Many Costs of Racism is a vivid and startling account of the mental and physical health effects of racism. Drawing on well documented studies, it vividly portrays the damage done to individuals, families, and communities by stress from workplace discrimination. It shows the strong connection between discrimination and health problems, describing these as costs above and beyond the economic trials of discrimination. The book is an ideal text, accessible to students in sociology, law, psychology, and medicine. Visit our website for sample chapters!
