Book Description

Top ten New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance's classic tale of suspense featuring Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont and his desperate race to track down a twisted killer.

Japanese businessman Tadeo Kurobashi had many passions, including computers, poetry, money, and Samurai lore. So his suicide method of choice would naturally be the ancient art of seppuku – what the uninitiated call ⧡ra–kiri.⟂ut despite the bloody Samurai sword Kurobashi clutches tightly in his lifeless hand, Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont senses the dead software magnate played a less active role in his own demise. Because glaring errors have been made in the time–honoured Asian death ritual – which has Beau looking for someone with a less traditional passion䥯r cold–blooded homicide.

4 out of 5 stars Easy reading...a good story........2006-03-30

I am a fan of J. A. Jance's Joanne Brady series and was first introduced to Det. Beaumont in Partner's In Crime; however, I first read the majority of the Brady series. Dismissed With Prejudice is only the second book in the Beaumont series that I have read. It was a good, quick and light read. Good beach or airport material as it is easy to put down and come back to.

4 out of 5 stars I've read a number of books in this series.......2005-12-22

And I think this is one of the better ones. However, I had this feeling that the author was never completely in control of the plot, and the ending didn't come neatly together the way it does in the best mysteries. The motive seemed grossly inadequate -- even murderers usually have an understandable reason.

The plot involves a Japanese businessman who is on the verge of bankruptcy who is found dead -- apparently a ritual suicide. A Japanese crime scene person doesn't think it looks right for that, and the family insists the man (Tadeo) would never do that no matter how bad things were. J.P. Beaumont, the tough Seattle detective assigned to the case (who habitually bucks his incompetent bosses), takes their word for it and treats it like a murder. Shortly after the murder, two individuals connected to Tadeo are viciously attacked, and Beaumont finds himself trying to find the motive for both crimes and to discover who did this.

There is a side plot involving Beaumont's growing realization that he may have a drinking problem.

This was a book I definitely enjoyed getting back to, that moved along quickly. Somehow when I got to the ending, however, I was disappointed as I expected more sense to emerge than did. Somehow the last couple of chapters seemed kind of flung together. I also think more careful background research would have improved this book. I had the distinct impression that more was needed vis-a-vis the Japanese connection.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Beau story........2003-08-04

Another great Beau story, so buy them all and read about the life and times of JP Beaumont.
You will see why I have fallen for this man.

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes Divorced from Reality.......2000-10-18

The title of this story has about as much to do with the contents of the book as would "Integrated from Zero to Infinity." This book is one of a series about detective Beaumont, all with similar legal phrases for titles. I've only read this one book.

This story is about the murder of a Japanese businessman. It goes into Japanese-American culture including the samurai traditions, modern computer businesses, as well as anti-Japanese racism. However, the unbelievability of parts of the story, such as the part described below, leads me not to take any of the discussion seriously.

The back cover and the inside front page hook us with a suspenseful scenario. They tell us that the investigators found the Japanese victim dead on the floor, an apparent suicide. Except that "an error in the ancient ritual pointed to ... murder." This makes us want to read more. However, I think that the author, J. A. Jance, took the intriguing scenario and wrapped at least the opening to the story around it, because the resolution was patently absurd.

As the reader, we expect a scene of ritual suicide, set up all proper except for one tiny error seen only by the detective. However, a Japanese American investigator pronounces the scene as "totally wrong" for ritual suicide. Among other things, the victim's head was still attached to the body. Nevertheless, the (Caucasian) medical examiner persists with his theory of suicide, sarcastically shouting down every point of error.

So instead of a subtle clue noticed only by a careful, intelligent observer, we have a bullheaded incompetent who refuses to heed someone who knows what he is talking about. Unfortunately, the author and the narrator do not recognize the incompetence.

But this is nothing compared with what follows few days later. The narrator learns from the crime lab that the killing wasn't suicide after all. The victim had been bludgeoned on the head, yet for some reason, none the investigators (including the narrator, Detective Beaumont himself) saw it at the crime scene. "We couldn't see it until after we moved the body." Yeah, right.

The narrator makes a snide remark every couple of paragraphs, and at the end of every chapter. An occasional snide remark is okay, perhaps even necessary. But I got tired of them quickly.

There were several places where I kept remarking (sarcastically), "Great deduction, Watson." Those were points where the narrator carefully and observantly deduced the obvious.

I am reminded of a another novel I read years ago, telling the story of a mystery writer whose latest novel was rejected for going way too far afield of believability. In the novel, the writer went underground herself to see what things were like. Maybe Jance should try something of the sort, although her writing in this novel was not nearly as bad as that of the fictional writer.

4 out of 5 stars Past and present collide in Seattle-area mystery story.......1998-04-18

When Tadeo Kurobashi, a respectable Japanese-American businessman, appears in these pages, he is already a corpse. However, the reader gradually learns more about him from the perspective of his loyal friends, sworn enemy, reclusive and mysterious wife, and estranged daughter. Did he commit suicide (hara-kiri) because of impending bankruptcy or was he murdered? Seattle police detective J.P. Beaumont undertakes to find out and to solve intertwining mysteries as well. The story ranges geographically from Seattle to Spokane with a bit of Chicago Mafia mixed in. The past enters in with snippets about occupied Japan after World War II and the detention camps for Japanese-Americans during the war. All-in-all, an engrossing mystery with believable characters. Think I'll try other mysteries by this author and about the J.P. Beaumont character.

8 CDs. Approximately 8.1 hours. Computers, poetry, and Samurai lore were successful businessman Tadeo Kurobashi's passions. So it stood to reason that the ancient "art" of harakiri would be his suicide method of choice. But Detective Beaumont wasn't certain that the dead software magnate had any choice in the matter -- despite the bloody Samurai sword Kurobashi clutched in his lifeless hand. Especially since an error in the time-honored death ritual indicated cold-blooded homicide ... of a most traditional sort.

"The Demon shall be mighty, but not indestructible: He shall be killed by no man and by no born female. No metal of the earth shall harm him..." Prince Tolian of Lorm is the kingdom's greatest warrior and proud heir to the throne. His world is turned upside-down when he learns of the Druidic Prophecy which foretells the coming of a powerful Demon and the end of the world. There is only one hope: Tolian must allow himself to be transformed into a woman in order to become the Champion - the only being capable of defeating the Demon. Tolian reluctantly agrees as the Demon enters the world and begins his nightmarish conquest. Now Tolian must come to terms with her new femininity, gain control of her magical powers, find the fabled Moonsword, battle a host of monsters, and confront the Demon before it's too late. Not your average faerie-tale to be sure.

5 out of 5 stars This book is out of print.......2006-04-19

Hi gang! Diana Hignutt here. I thought that I should clear up a few things about this novel. This edition is out of print. The rights have been returned to me. I suppose it's possible that there are yet a few copies in warehouses somewhere, but there shouldn't be many. Also, as of right now, there is no other edition of this 2004 Spectrum Award nominated novel planned or scheduled. My deal with Behler Publications fell through, and I'm busy looking for a new agent and a new publisher for this book. If and when anything changes about the status of Moonsword, I'll edit this review to let you know about it. Also, I should point out that my novel Empress of Clouds is a stand alone sequel to Moonsword (meaning that you don't have to read Moonsword to follow the story) and is available through Amazon. Anyway, thanks for your interest in this product. My very best to you. Diana Hignutt

1 out of 5 stars No Royalties for Author.......2005-12-15

          Coming from Diana Hignutt herself:

"I'll expand on this soon, but I ask you NOT to buy my novel, Moonsword published by PublishAmerica. Moonspell, coming from Behler in 2006 is the only authorized edition of this book.
All authors should beware of PublishAmerica, a Marland based POD, neo-vanity press that masquarades as a traditional publisher. I would have saved myself much grief, time and money had I been more wary earlier in my career. However, a scam agent led me into the clutches of PA (PublishAmerica). They claimed to be a real traditional publisher and made considerable promises regarding editing, marketing and royalty payments that were not true. I'll expand on this when I have more time. I urge all authors to avoid them like the plague.

In the meantime, rest assured that my first novel will be reborn in a new revised, re-edited edition coming from Behler Publication in early 2006 under the new title Moonspell, The Moonsword Trilogy, Book 1."

This is the PublishAmerica book, and will give the author no royalties, which is an awful thing for someone who has worked so hard. Whether you like the book or not, if you plan on buying it, don't buy it from here!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, I tried...but this book just didn't happen for me........2004-07-15

I really thought this would be a good book. I tried to like it, I really did, but I just had to put it down in utter disappointment.

          5 out of 5 stars Feminine Mysteries.......2004-04-07

According to Druid prophecy, "a Demon will arise who shall destroy the world." "The Demon shall be mighty, but not indestructible". "He shall be killed by no man, and by none born female and by no one who is delivered in birth by a living woman". Prince Tolian, a warrior prince and heir to the throne is the only one who potentially meets these qualifications since he was untimely ripped from his dead mother's womb.

This book has several interesting motifs with one of them being gender identity. Prince Tolian reluctantly agrees to become a woman to save the world. Prince Tolian considers suicide rather than face the humility of being a woman. How can he face his father, the king? The prince struggles with the belief that women are inferior. As a man, Prince Tobian is given a love potion and falls madly in love with a Druid maiden. Still in love and now a woman further contributes to his melancholic state.

Prince Tolian realizes that to defeat the Demon, develop her magic and to lead her troops in battle, it is necessary to come to terms with being a woman. Success depends on a positive mental outlook. The author, Dianna Hignutt draws upon her personal experiences to handle these complicated gender identity issues.

The story is fast paced and the author's writing style makes for an easy to read.

Moonsword is Dianna's first book and this reviewer is looking forward to her next book.

5 out of 5 stars I have to be honest here..........2004-03-17

I haven't read this book. I find it fascinating though because the author, Diana Hignutt used to be a man. She was on a local radio show today, and used to be named Tim. She is still married to her wife. Interesting that the book concerns a hero that has to change gender to succeed.

I plan on reading it soon.

          5 out of 5 stars More Than a Warlock.......2003-03-21

Mind Out of Time is a collection of stories covering a span from 1981 to 2003. They cover a variety of SF and fantasy themes.

"The Warlock's Grandfather" is an odd story of either madness or canniness. After a long life of dedication to the family business, Count Rory begins to live in a dream world of his own making. This humiliates some of his children and their spouses, but elates two of his grandchildren.

"Coronach of the Bell" is a sad tale warning of the dangers of intervention in an ecology with insufficient knowledge. At the same time, it is a tale of forgiveness.

The earliest story, "The Martyrdom of St. Vidicon of Cathode", is a tale of Murphy's Law as manifested in technology. A backstory of the Warlock series, this tale might be seen as a farce to non-technical readers, but it is a tribute to human perseverance to anyone who has had to deal with electronic equipment. It may be contrived, but there is more than a smidgen of truth in it. High tech has its own version of praying in the foxholes.

"Pride and Puppetry" is obviously about prejudice, but also about loyalty and justice. When is it appropriate to allow your liege lord to be humiliated?

"Gordon's Quest" is a story of redemption through martyrdom. Unlike St. Vidicon, Gordon is seeking death to achieve paradise. Sound familiar? Of course, the author doesn't write just a journey toward death, but throws in a few exploitive gods that use Gordon to put down another god who has been coopted by the Taiping revolution.

"Who Ghost There?" is a romantic tale of a little girl, Anthea, with negligent parents who finds parental love from the family ghost. It seems Sir Roderick cannot rest until he recovers his head, so he has been consoling and protecting lonely children for centuries. Just to enlivened the plot, there are two suitors for Anthea's hand, a pair of the last Faerie in England, and a foreign spirit who manifests as a ball of fire.

The latest story, "Mind Out of Time", is also a backstory of the Warlock series. Angus McAran is deformed in body, but brilliant of mind. After graduating with a electrical engineering degree with a minor in physics, he became an inventor for a large corporation for a six figure salary and a well equipped laboratory. The company paid him a good amount for each patent issued, but then retained the royalties. While the money was minor matter, the lack ownership of the patents still irked him. Then, one day he found himself faced with a man -- actually a Neanderthal -- from his future (and other times) who advised him to invent a time machine and free himself from the tyranny of being a salaryman.

These stories display the humor and characterization often found in the author's various series, but also show a greater degree of versatility than found in the series work. While this collection brings all his stories into print, one may hope that the author will produce a few more in the near future.

Recommended for Stasheff fans and anyone who enjoys humor and a bit of wisdom in SF and fantasy settings.

5 out of 5 stars strong collection, especially the titled novella.......2003-02-04

This collection from the author of The Warlock In Spite of Himself and subsequent mythos consists of six sensational short stories and a long terrific time travel tale "MIND OUT OF TIME" that expands the Christopher Stasheff cosmos to the merriment of his followers.

Each of the shorter tales is well written with strong characters while supporting the Stasheff cosmos underlying supposition that misfits struggle to find a group or a loved one to belong to and reciprocally belongs to the antihero too. Mr. Stasheff expands on his theme in a two-page introduction to this anthology that his supporters will want to read. Fans of the Wizard universe will gain much delight with these six entertaining tales starring humanity's outcasts.

However, this book belongs to the title novella, MIND OUT OF TIME. Though born with a deformed body, Angus McArcan is brilliant having secured many patents for the company that employs him. When co-worker Yorick talks about a Neanderthal skull found in Michigan, Angus decides to astral time travel to find out if Neanderthals ever made it to North America. He lands in the body of Alaspar, a Neanderthal living in what will one day be Michigan. Angus learns from Alaspar that he will invent a time machine, be the founder of GRIPE (Guardians of the Rights of Individuals, especially patent holders) and will develop a sense of future. When he returns to the present, he meets Yorick again who is also a time traveler sent to save him from those who don't want GRIPE to succeed. This is a whimsical time travel tale starring an unusual but likable hero.

                      Book Description

The Grit, located in the quintessential boho town of Athens, Georgia, is known far and wide as the touring musicians' restaurant of choice. This classic cookbook features 150 of The Grit's most requested recipes, including 20 new recipes to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this famous establishment. True to its Southern roots, this hip vegetarian eatery combines soul-food sensibility with meatless cuisine, and while there are plenty of Italian, Indian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern favorites to satisfy the well-traveled vegetarian, the heart of this cuisine maintains the down-home, soul-food feeling of simple foods and classic combinations that are guaranteed to please.

The publishers ought to be giving me a commission as I have turned so many people on to this cookbook! Seriously, it has fantastic recipes, including the best pancakes I have ever made....the nutritional yeast gravy and the golden bowl are to die for...the stews with Guinness beer rock....the cilantro and pesto quesadillas are always a hit....yum......

This is one of the best cookbooks I've ever bought. I am eager to make a trip to athens to eat at the actual restaurant. Great gift for your vegetarian or non-vegetarian friend.

The Grit is an amazing restaurant to eat at and the cookbook lets me make that same awesome food at home. The food is also fairly easy to make which is a bonus!

When will it come? I would love to have this book & I ordered it so long ago from Amazon (maybe May?). I still have yet to receive it as I keep getting emails saying it will be 4 more weeks or 1 more month and will I accept the delay. I am not sure if Amazon ever plans to get this book. I was warned by my husband that they do this in order to get your business & not order from others. I keep accepting the delay, hoping it will cause them to get the book and meanwhile I'm seeking it out on other sites.

I have owned this book for around 3 years now, and this is by far my most used cookbook. I think one of the most difficult things to perfect as a vegan is baking; cakes never come out like "the real deal", and always hit your stomach like a heavy brick. I was so excited when I was able to replicated the three-tiered, moist, fluffy cakes I had been able to enjoy all through my undergrad in Athens. I often refer back to the book to think of ways to alter my own recipes.

This is a must have book for any vegetarian or vegan for the simple fact that these recipes are used daily in a hugely popular restaurant, and thus have been tested an incredible number of times. If you have guests coming over, regardless of diet, you are guaranteed to create a satisfying meal everyone will enjoy.

I was not very impressed with this book. Most of the tricks were just too silly and required a few people to do. Maybe they would work better for someone with small dogs and kids.

I love this book and thought it was great. There are all sorts of things you can do with your dog. For example it gives you instructions on how to make jumps, a tunnel and other things.

Unless you want your dog to be food possessive/agressive, ill-mannered, and riddled with ANXIETY, this is not a book for you. Having studied the mind and behavior of our canine companions for 22 years, I find this book to be a VERY POOR CHOICE and (at times) bordering on dangerous.

5 out of 5 stars Not for those too serious to have fun with their dogs.......2005-04-12

If you're looking for a very serious book and have absolutely no sense of humor, look for some other book. But if you're looking to have fun with your pooch, look no further. Coile writes some great books and Beyond Fetch is a great book for someone wanting to do fun activites with their dog.

Some of these games are downright silly. Mind games, backyard games, and party games -- what did you expect? Vacations, outdoor adventures, and organized sports are all covered as well. Coile also covers dog toys and the best ways to relax with your pooch.

Have fun, enjoy yourself, and have a howling good time!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun activities.......2003-12-11

This book has all sorts of fun ideas and my dogs love to try the new games in it. It also has lots of resources if you want to find out more. I have an old dog and a young dog and it has something for both of them. (The reveiwer who complained about some of the actvities for her dog must of not read the introduction where it said that not every activity was suggested for every dog...) This book has made my puppy easier to live with because he is never bored. And it helps keep my old dog entertained even though she can't do much exercise.

                      Book Description

Johann Loetz Witwe, the most productive art glass manufacturer in Bohemia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, owed its success to the sophisticated stained glass work it created in historic designs. With artistic claims reinforced by intensive contacts with the Viennese art scene, L tz built up an extensive and diversified product line, to international renown.

In the complex and confusing world of vintage art glass where attribution of unsigned examples is often difficult, the adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" applies. In that regard this volume delivers the goods. This book is filled with examples, the vast majority in color, of Loetz art glass. Many are listed with the name of the form designer, the artist or decorator, and whether or not the example is signed or unsigned. Included is a history of the company, exhibition chronology, and its relationship with artists such as those associated with the Wiener Werkstatte. There's a good section on factory marks and signatures, a section on artist biographies, and even a couple of graphically represented pages on "How to Make Iridescent Glass."

I am thrilled to have this wonderfully illustrated book in my Library. It is beyond description, if one tries to portray this history of Loetz Glass in words alone. I found suspected Loetz vases here that I, happily, own, and the authors left nothing to be desired in this publication....for the Loetz owner ~ it is a must have, indeed! Thank you, Amazon, for selling it at half the price of one offered on EBAY! UPS brought a jewell today! Now, hopefully, more Loetz will be on the way!

3 out of 5 stars A Partial Review of Loetz Glass.......2004-05-02

I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the glass that has become my collecting passion. At over $50, I expected this to be a very complete book that would cover the different decors and styles of glass made by Loetz. However, after a very brief description of the early decors such Papillon, I found the vast majority of this book to focus on the Phanomen decor, with very little information on other decors, especially the earlier ones. The reference pages in the back of the book were very helpful (giving the date, genre and colors for a particular shaped vase), but again, most of these were Phanomen and most of the glass I have seen that I know to be documented Loetz are not even mentioned.
In general, I am glad I bought this book - the pictures are gorgeous - but wish there was more information on other decors and vase forms created by Loetz.

All Hillman books are big carving aids. Patterns are b & w, & there are color photos in front & back. Get yourself a 2nd, color book of bird photos to help if painting realistically is your goal. No seagulls here - a surprise to me.

This is the first book of this type for shore bird decoys that I have seen. Other books generally deal with floating decoys and shore birds as secondary. Photos are great. Nice book.

I think for the first time carver these books are the best to follow you through with the patterns the size of the wood and shape of the bird and what ever.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly a book of patterns.......1999-06-28

If you are looking for an inexpensive book of just patterns, this will meet your needs. However the carving instructions are minimalist and there are no painting instructions. There is one color picture of each bird included.

As soon as we saw Virginian Bob Swain's shorebird sculptures, we knew you'd want

to try making one. Here's how Bob goes about carving and painting a dowitcher, a common wading bird related to the sandpiper.

                                      1. Professional color photography of the finished product taken after we've finished building the project ourselves in the WOOD(r) magazine shop. You can even zoom in on the screen to see those little details.
                                      2. For a clear idea of how our projects go together, we provide an exploded-view drawing with helpful details. All drawings are done professionally by our own staff off woodworkers/illustrators.

                                        Book Description

This source collection brings for the first time records from foreign archives concerning the Dutch commanderies of the Order of the Hospital of St. John or of Malta and their place within the Order's international organization. The book presents bulls and letters from and to the Grandmaster and the Prior of Germany; a 14th-century rent-roll of St. Catherine's Convent at Utrecht; visitations and inquiries 1373-1732; and a list of pamphlets concerning the regaining of the Order's confiscated property in the Dutch Republic. All sources are given in their original language: Latin, French, Italian, German or Dutch. Because of the long period (14th-18th centuries) and the broad variety of subjects they are important for researchers of political as well as economic history from medieval to early modern times.

They run the risk of offending other commentators who may consider Grant's views to be less than politically correct. This volume brings together some of the more memorable pieces from Grant's work published since 1982.

                                                Book Description

Harriet Tubman is born a slave on a Maryland plantation in the 1800s. She trusts in God, but her faith is tested at every turn. Should she obey her masters or listen to her conscience? This story from Harriet's childhood is a record of courage. Even more, it's the story of God's faithfulness as He prepares her for her adult calling to lead more than 300 people out of slavery through the Underground Railroad.

This was an excellent book. I found it most fascinating about Harriet Tubman. She was truly a great woman, far above her age and time. Great reading for anyone who is learning more about the underground railroad!!

5 out of 5 stars Harriet Tubman from a different perspective.......2003-08-29

I don't remember seeing or reading a book on Harriet Tubman as a child. Wendy Lawton's account of Harriet Tubman's childhood life was very realistic to me. I could visualize the deplorable conditions of the slave quarters as well as the less than nice slave owners. The book is easy reading and peeked my interest right from the start. Well worth the reading.

5 out of 5 stars More than another childrens book.......2003-08-16

This is a wonderful piece of children's prose, by dynamic author and sculptor Wendy Lawton. As a teacher, it would be advantageous to include this as supplementary reading for your students, but also as an avid bibliophile, it is a great read like for everyone. Lawton has captured the reader in an engrossing and mesmerizing tale. Well written, superbly detailed, factual without being compromising, engaging to the child yet still approachable, this work truly is paramount. I cannot express in words just how much children can learn and will be edified by this book. It sparks lively class discussion, piques childrens curiosity and is a great introduction to adolescent literature. I compare this prose to Anne of Green Gables and also Little Women. I highly recommend it without reservation for all! Destined to be a classic! Great work Wendy Lawton!

5 out of 5 stars A real page turner! Exceptional writing........2003-04-28

This is a very engrossing book and one I could not put down until I finished it.

I normally do not like to read any book written in dialect. In fact, I will quite often go out of my way NOT to read them. I find they tend to slow down the read for me because I mentally try to sound out the dialect as I read. Very distracting.

But Wendy has done a superb job with Minty, and she managed to pull me in right at the start.

I think Harriet Tubman has been an inspiration to nearly everyone, regardless of race, because of her courageous actions once she decided "this is what I have to do!" and I am no exception. To see her story through the eyes of her youth is very enlightening...and heart-breaking.

Well written and well researched. A great read.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2003-04-01

Lawton does an outstanding job of putting the reader right in the "Quarter" house for slaves on a plantation in Maryland with the young Harriet Tubman, her family and close friends.

The reader anguishes with Harriet every time her master whips her. We pull for her to return to her family every time she is "hired out" to other slave owners. We rejoice with her when God answers her simple yet profound prayers. And we are challenged when a young girl asks God for the courage it takes to run for freedom.

I knew very little about Harriet Tubman before reading Lawton's book. Now I'll never forget her.

Harriet Tubman’s name is known world-wide and her exploits as a self-liberated Underground Railroad heroine are celebrated in children’s literature, film, and history books, yet no major biography of Tubman has appeared since 1943. Jean M. Humez’s comprehensive Harriet Tubman is both an important biographical overview based on extensive new research and a complete collection of the stories Tubman told about her life—a virtual autobiography culled by Humez from rare early publications and manuscript sources. This book will become a landmark resource for scholars, historians, and general readers interested in slavery, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, and African American women.
Born in slavery in Maryland in or around 1820, Tubman drew upon deep spiritual resources and covert antislavery networks when she escaped to the north in 1849. Vowing to liberate her entire family, she made repeated trips south during the 1850s and successfully guided dozens of fugitives to freedom. During the Civil War she was recruited to act as spy and scout with the Union Army. After the war she settled in Auburn, New York, where she worked to support an extended family and in her later years founded a home for the indigent aged. Celebrated by her primarily white antislavery associates in a variety of private and public documents from the 1850s through the 1870s, she was rediscovered as a race heroine by woman suffragists and the African American women’s club movement in the early twentieth century. Her story was used as a key symbolic resource in education, institutional fundraising, and debates about the meaning of "race" throughout the twentieth century.
Humez includes an extended discussion of Tubman’s work as a public performer of her own life history during the nearly sixty years she lived in the north. Drawing upon historiographical and literary discussion of the complex hybrid authorship of slave narrative literature, Humez analyzes the interactive dynamic between Tubman and her interviewers. Humez illustrates how Tubman, though unable to write, made major unrecognized contributions to the shaping of her own heroic myth by early biographers like Sarah Bradford. Selections of key documents illustrate how Tubman appeared to her contemporaries, and a comprehensive list of primary sources represents an important resource for scholars.

5 out of 5 stars As close to an "autobiography" as we can get!.......2004-02-13

Several years back I was watching a documentary on Harriet Tubman in which one of her relatives was interviewed. I suddenly realized I had never thought of Tubman as a real person, with actual living relatives! Her legend looms so much larger than life that she hovers somewhere in the realm of Paul Bunyan.

This book begins with a traditional biography, presenting the bare bones of Tubman's life. The section called "Stories and Sayings" puts meat on those bones, breathing life into someone who has nearly been lost to us in legend. It's a fascinating concept, and I think it works.

Equally amazing is the Documents section, reflecting 10 years of research and which will be required reading for any future Tubman scholars because, as Humez herself says, "...my retelling of her life story cannot be definitive." Highly recommended.

Harriet Tubman: The Life and the Life Stories, by Jean M. Humez

This book is a treasure. Eminently readable, impossible to put down, totally absorbing, this book will satisfy meticulous scholars and the general public. What a great way to learn U.S. history! Great quotes, critical appraisal of the work of earlier historians, new documentation, wonderfully illuminating photographs. A feast for the curious mind and eye.
I have always wanted to know more about Harriet Tubman and as soon as I heard this book was out I dived into it. Harriet Tubman's life has been the subject of several biographers in the past, but in this work Humez convincingly argues that Harriet Tubman, who could not read or write, was able to produce a "self-authored life story" by carefully choosing the writers she collaborated with and exercising control about what stories to tell and how to tell them. This results in a fascinating and kaleidoscopic interpretation of Harriet Tubman's life, as seen through different authors and through Harriet Tubman herself.
In the first section, "The Life," I learned about the salient facts of Harriet Tubman's life: her years as a slave in Maryland, seeing two of her sisters sold and carried away in a chain-gang, her successful escape from slavery in 1849, when she was probably 29 years old, her contacts with the anti-slavery movement in the North, the mutual admiration of Harriet Tubman and John Brown who referred to her using the masculine pronoum ("Harriet Tubman hooked on his whole team at once. He is the most of a man, naturally, that I ever met with"). It is also about the clandestine trips she made to Maryland to rescue her extended family and others, her military and nursing work during the civil war and her settling in Auburn, New York, in poverty, taking care of old and sick people of color and children-- the John Brown Hall project, as she called it.
Interesting quotes from her dictated letters reveal details that throw light on her views on other issues, such as women's rights. For instance, in telling about the successful Combahee River raid in South Carolina, in which she worked with Col. James Montgomery and a band of 300 black soldiers, she states after her dress was shred that "...I made up my mind then I would never wear a long dress on another expedition of the kind, but would have a bloomer as soon as I could get it..."
It is in the second part, "The Life Stories," that Humez makes the case that Harriet Tubman's gifts as a story-teller, singer, and performer and her reputation as an African-American celebrity ensured that her experiences as a slave and her deep spirituality would be preserved. Here, through a discussion on the politics of research, the dynamics between a researcher and her/his subject, and the cultural and social context that influences much of those dynamics, I felt Harriet Tubman's presence and resourcefulness vividly, towering above those who tried to capture her complex story and interpret her life according to their values and the racial views of their culture.
The third part, "Stories and Sayings," offers a hypothetical version of Tubman's "autobiography" culled from every individual life history story Humez was able to locate from the earlier works. While all the stories and sayings are revealing and offer significant insights my favorite part was the "Stories of Clever Exploits and Tricks," probably because I always wondered how she actually carried out her rescue missions. In this section the intelligence, courage, and humor of Harriet Tubman shines through, like in the story "Avoiding Capture by Pretending to Read." It says: " At another time when she heard men talking about her, she pretended to read a book which she carried. One man remarked. `This can't be the woman. The one we want can't read or write.' Harriet devoutly hoped this book was right side up" (Tatlock, 1939a).
The final section, "Documents" is a gift of primary source materials for future researchers and anybody interested in pursuing an in-depth study of Harriet Tubman's life.
Read this book. See for yourself how illuminating the past and looking at history with a fresh eye can instill hope. This book is yes, about Harriet Tubman, but more fundamentally, it is a book about courage, dignity, persistence, and solidarity in incredibly harsh circumstances. What a gift for us all in these troubled times.

5 out of 5 stars Harriet Tubman's memory and legacy are cherished.......2004-02-09
