ASIN: 0380755475 Release Date: 2004-10-26 |
Book Description
Top ten New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance's classic tale of suspense featuring Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont and his desperate race to track down a twisted killer.
Japanese businessman Tadeo Kurobashi had many passions, including computers, poetry, money, and Samurai lore. So his suicide method of choice would naturally be the ancient art of seppuku – what the uninitiated call ⧡ra–kiri.⟂ut despite the bloody Samurai sword Kurobashi clutches tightly in his lifeless hand, Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont senses the dead software magnate played a less active role in his own demise. Because glaring errors have been made in the time–honoured Asian death ritual – which has Beau looking for someone with a less traditional passion䥯r cold–blooded homicide.

Easy reading...a good story........2006-03-30
I've read a number of books in this series.......2005-12-22
Another great Beau story........2003-08-04
Sometimes Divorced from Reality.......2000-10-18
This story is about the murder of a Japanese businessman. It goes into Japanese-American culture including the samurai traditions, modern computer businesses, as well as anti-Japanese racism. However, the unbelievability of parts of the story, such as the part described below, leads me not to take any of the discussion seriously.
The back cover and the inside front page hook us with a suspenseful scenario. They tell us that the investigators found the Japanese victim dead on the floor, an apparent suicide. Except that "an error in the ancient ritual pointed to ... murder." This makes us want to read more. However, I think that the author, J. A. Jance, took the intriguing scenario and wrapped at least the opening to the story around it, because the resolution was patently absurd.
As the reader, we expect a scene of ritual suicide, set up all proper except for one tiny error seen only by the detective. However, a Japanese American investigator pronounces the scene as "totally wrong" for ritual suicide. Among other things, the victim's head was still attached to the body. Nevertheless, the (Caucasian) medical examiner persists with his theory of suicide, sarcastically shouting down every point of error.
So instead of a subtle clue noticed only by a careful, intelligent observer, we have a bullheaded incompetent who refuses to heed someone who knows what he is talking about. Unfortunately, the author and the narrator do not recognize the incompetence.
But this is nothing compared with what follows few days later. The narrator learns from the crime lab that the killing wasn't suicide after all. The victim had been bludgeoned on the head, yet for some reason, none the investigators (including the narrator, Detective Beaumont himself) saw it at the crime scene. "We couldn't see it until after we moved the body." Yeah, right.
The narrator makes a snide remark every couple of paragraphs, and at the end of every chapter. An occasional snide remark is okay, perhaps even necessary. But I got tired of them quickly.
There were several places where I kept remarking (sarcastically), "Great deduction, Watson." Those were points where the narrator carefully and observantly deduced the obvious.
I am reminded of a another novel I read years ago, telling the story of a mystery writer whose latest novel was rejected for going way too far afield of believability. In the novel, the writer went underground herself to see what things were like. Maybe Jance should try something of the sort, although her writing in this novel was not nearly as bad as that of the fictional writer.
Past and present collide in Seattle-area mystery story.......1998-04-18

8 CDs. Approximately 8.1 hours. Computers, poetry, and Samurai lore were successful businessman Tadeo Kurobashi's passions. So it stood to reason that the ancient "art" of harakiri would be his suicide method of choice. But Detective Beaumont wasn't certain that the dead software magnate had any choice in the matter -- despite the bloody Samurai sword Kurobashi clutched in his lifeless hand. Especially since an error in the time-honored death ritual indicated cold-blooded homicide ... of a most traditional sort.

Book Description
"The Demon shall be mighty, but not indestructible: He shall be killed by no man and by no born female. No metal of the earth shall harm him..." Prince Tolian of Lorm is the kingdom's greatest warrior and proud heir to the throne. His world is turned upside-down when he learns of the Druidic Prophecy which foretells the coming of a powerful Demon and the end of the world. There is only one hope: Tolian must allow himself to be transformed into a woman in order to become the Champion - the only being capable of defeating the Demon. Tolian reluctantly agrees as the Demon enters the world and begins his nightmarish conquest. Now Tolian must come to terms with her new femininity, gain control of her magical powers, find the fabled Moonsword, battle a host of monsters, and confront the Demon before it's too late. Not your average faerie-tale to be sure.Customer Reviews:

Feminine Mysteries.......2004-04-07
This book has several interesting motifs with one of them being gender identity. Prince Tolian reluctantly agrees to become a woman to save the world. Prince Tolian considers suicide rather than face the humility of being a woman. How can he face his father, the king? The prince struggles with the belief that women are inferior. As a man, Prince Tobian is given a love potion and falls madly in love with a Druid maiden. Still in love and now a woman further contributes to his melancholic state.
Prince Tolian realizes that to defeat the Demon, develop her magic and to lead her troops in battle, it is necessary to come to terms with being a woman. Success depends on a positive mental outlook. The author, Dianna Hignutt draws upon her personal experiences to handle these complicated gender identity issues.
The story is fast paced and the author's writing style makes for an easy to read.
Moonsword is Dianna's first book and this reviewer is looking forward to her next book.

Mind Out of Time (Five Star Science Fiction/Fantasy)

Book Description
His Warlock and Wizard in Rhyme series have sold hundreds of thousands of copies around the world. Now Five Star is proud to bring together the best of Christopher Stasheff's short fiction -- including a brand new novella featuring Angus McAran. Stories include The Warlock's Grandfather, Coronach of the Bell, Pride and Puppetry and many more.Customer Reviews:
More Than a Warlock.......2003-03-21
"The Warlock's Grandfather" is an odd story of either madness or canniness. After a long life of dedication to the family business, Count Rory begins to live in a dream world of his own making. This humiliates some of his children and their spouses, but elates two of his grandchildren.
"Coronach of the Bell" is a sad tale warning of the dangers of intervention in an ecology with insufficient knowledge. At the same time, it is a tale of forgiveness.
The earliest story, "The Martyrdom of St. Vidicon of Cathode", is a tale of Murphy's Law as manifested in technology. A backstory of the Warlock series, this tale might be seen as a farce to non-technical readers, but it is a tribute to human perseverance to anyone who has had to deal with electronic equipment. It may be contrived, but there is more than a smidgen of truth in it. High tech has its own version of praying in the foxholes.
"Pride and Puppetry" is obviously about prejudice, but also about loyalty and justice. When is it appropriate to allow your liege lord to be humiliated?
"Gordon's Quest" is a story of redemption through martyrdom. Unlike St. Vidicon, Gordon is seeking death to achieve paradise. Sound familiar? Of course, the author doesn't write just a journey toward death, but throws in a few exploitive gods that use Gordon to put down another god who has been coopted by the Taiping revolution.
"Who Ghost There?" is a romantic tale of a little girl, Anthea, with negligent parents who finds parental love from the family ghost. It seems Sir Roderick cannot rest until he recovers his head, so he has been consoling and protecting lonely children for centuries. Just to enlivened the plot, there are two suitors for Anthea's hand, a pair of the last Faerie in England, and a foreign spirit who manifests as a ball of fire.
The latest story, "Mind Out of Time", is also a backstory of the Warlock series. Angus McAran is deformed in body, but brilliant of mind. After graduating with a electrical engineering degree with a minor in physics, he became an inventor for a large corporation for a six figure salary and a well equipped laboratory. The company paid him a good amount for each patent issued, but then retained the royalties. While the money was minor matter, the lack ownership of the patents still irked him. Then, one day he found himself faced with a man -- actually a Neanderthal -- from his future (and other times) who advised him to invent a time machine and free himself from the tyranny of being a salaryman.
These stories display the humor and characterization often found in the author's various series, but also show a greater degree of versatility than found in the series work. While this collection brings all his stories into print, one may hope that the author will produce a few more in the near future.
Recommended for Stasheff fans and anyone who enjoys humor and a bit of wisdom in SF and fantasy settings.
strong collection, especially the titled novella.......2003-02-04
Each of the shorter tales is well written with strong characters while supporting the Stasheff cosmos underlying supposition that misfits struggle to find a group or a loved one to belong to and reciprocally belongs to the antihero too. Mr. Stasheff expands on his theme in a two-page introduction to this anthology that his supporters will want to read. Fans of the Wizard universe will gain much delight with these six entertaining tales starring humanity's outcasts.
However, this book belongs to the title novella, MIND OUT OF TIME. Though born with a deformed body, Angus McArcan is brilliant having secured many patents for the company that employs him. When co-worker Yorick talks about a Neanderthal skull found in Michigan, Angus decides to astral time travel to find out if Neanderthals ever made it to North America. He lands in the body of Alaspar, a Neanderthal living in what will one day be Michigan. Angus learns from Alaspar that he will invent a time machine, be the founder of GRIPE (Guardians of the Rights of Individuals, especially patent holders) and will develop a sense of future. When he returns to the present, he meets Yorick again who is also a time traveler sent to save him from those who don't want GRIPE to succeed. This is a whimsical time travel tale starring an unusual but likable hero.

A real page turner! Exceptional writing........2003-04-28
I normally do not like to read any book written in dialect. In fact, I will quite often go out of my way NOT to read them. I find they tend to slow down the read for me because I mentally try to sound out the dialect as I read. Very distracting.
But Wendy has done a superb job with Minty, and she managed to pull me in right at the start.
I think Harriet Tubman has been an inspiration to nearly everyone, regardless of race, because of her courageous actions once she decided "this is what I have to do!" and I am no exception. To see her story through the eyes of her youth is very enlightening...and heart-breaking.
Well written and well researched. A great read.
Unforgettable.......2003-04-01
The reader anguishes with Harriet every time her master whips her. We pull for her to return to her family every time she is "hired out" to other slave owners. We rejoice with her when God answers her simple yet profound prayers. And we are challenged when a young girl asks God for the courage it takes to run for freedom.
I knew very little about Harriet Tubman before reading Lawton's book. Now I'll never forget her.

Harriet Tubman: The Life and the Life Stories (Wisconsin Studies in Autobiography)
Jean M. Humez Manufacturer: University of Wisconsin Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0299191206 |
Book Description
Harriet Tubman’s name is known world-wide and her exploits as a self-liberated Underground Railroad heroine are celebrated in children’s literature, film, and history books, yet no major biography of Tubman has appeared since 1943. Jean M. Humez’s comprehensive Harriet Tubman is both an important biographical overview based on extensive new research and a complete collection of the stories Tubman told about her life—a virtual autobiography culled by Humez from rare early publications and manuscript sources. This book will become a landmark resource for scholars, historians, and general readers interested in slavery, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, and African American women.Customer Reviews:
As close to an "autobiography" as we can get!.......2004-02-13
This book begins with a traditional biography, presenting the bare bones of Tubman's life. The section called "Stories and Sayings" puts meat on those bones, breathing life into someone who has nearly been lost to us in legend. It's a fascinating concept, and I think it works.
Equally amazing is the Documents section, reflecting 10 years of research and which will be required reading for any future Tubman scholars because, as Humez herself says, "...my retelling of her life story cannot be definitive." Highly recommended.

What a great way to learn U.S. history!.......2004-02-12
This book is a treasure. Eminently readable, impossible to put down, totally absorbing, this book will satisfy meticulous scholars and the general public. What a great way to learn U.S. history! Great quotes, critical appraisal of the work of earlier historians, new documentation, wonderfully illuminating photographs. A feast for the curious mind and eye.
I have always wanted to know more about Harriet Tubman and as soon as I heard this book was out I dived into it. Harriet Tubman's life has been the subject of several biographers in the past, but in this work Humez convincingly argues that Harriet Tubman, who could not read or write, was able to produce a "self-authored life story" by carefully choosing the writers she collaborated with and exercising control about what stories to tell and how to tell them. This results in a fascinating and kaleidoscopic interpretation of Harriet Tubman's life, as seen through different authors and through Harriet Tubman herself.
In the first section, "The Life," I learned about the salient facts of Harriet Tubman's life: her years as a slave in Maryland, seeing two of her sisters sold and carried away in a chain-gang, her successful escape from slavery in 1849, when she was probably 29 years old, her contacts with the anti-slavery movement in the North, the mutual admiration of Harriet Tubman and John Brown who referred to her using the masculine pronoum ("Harriet Tubman hooked on his whole team at once. He is the most of a man, naturally, that I ever met with"). It is also about the clandestine trips she made to Maryland to rescue her extended family and others, her military and nursing work during the civil war and her settling in Auburn, New York, in poverty, taking care of old and sick people of color and children-- the John Brown Hall project, as she called it.
Interesting quotes from her dictated letters reveal details that throw light on her views on other issues, such as women's rights. For instance, in telling about the successful Combahee River raid in South Carolina, in which she worked with Col. James Montgomery and a band of 300 black soldiers, she states after her dress was shred that "...I made up my mind then I would never wear a long dress on another expedition of the kind, but would have a bloomer as soon as I could get it..."
It is in the second part, "The Life Stories," that Humez makes the case that Harriet Tubman's gifts as a story-teller, singer, and performer and her reputation as an African-American celebrity ensured that her experiences as a slave and her deep spirituality would be preserved. Here, through a discussion on the politics of research, the dynamics between a researcher and her/his subject, and the cultural and social context that influences much of those dynamics, I felt Harriet Tubman's presence and resourcefulness vividly, towering above those who tried to capture her complex story and interpret her life according to their values and the racial views of their culture.
The third part, "Stories and Sayings," offers a hypothetical version of Tubman's "autobiography" culled from every individual life history story Humez was able to locate from the earlier works. While all the stories and sayings are revealing and offer significant insights my favorite part was the "Stories of Clever Exploits and Tricks," probably because I always wondered how she actually carried out her rescue missions. In this section the intelligence, courage, and humor of Harriet Tubman shines through, like in the story "Avoiding Capture by Pretending to Read." It says: " At another time when she heard men talking about her, she pretended to read a book which she carried. One man remarked. `This can't be the woman. The one we want can't read or write.' Harriet devoutly hoped this book was right side up" (Tatlock, 1939a).
The final section, "Documents" is a gift of primary source materials for future researchers and anybody interested in pursuing an in-depth study of Harriet Tubman's life.
Read this book. See for yourself how illuminating the past and looking at history with a fresh eye can instill hope. This book is yes, about Harriet Tubman, but more fundamentally, it is a book about courage, dignity, persistence, and solidarity in incredibly harsh circumstances. What a gift for us all in these troubled times.
Harriet Tubman's memory and legacy are cherished.......2004-02-09
